Quiet, rainy day in Cleveland

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 28, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Amazing how quiet things are around the Yankees these days. It’s July 28, and aside from a handful of rumors and speculation sprinkled here and there, there’s just not much going on unless it’s well behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, rain has stopped falling in Cleveland. The tarp is coming off the field and sky seems to be deciding between showers and sunshine. The sun just took the lead.

Chad-what’s this about you being a serviceable bullpen catcher? :)

Where the Rangers go in the playoffs will do nothing to increase their value to a possible buyer.

You don?t count on annual revenues from post-season receipts when you are factoring in the value of a franchise.

Their bottom line, debts and all, aren?t going to be erased with a post-season berth.
    ———————————–

Yeah but the point is if I’m Arte Moreno, Hal Steinbrenner, or any other owner with a team in the playoff hunt I’m irate about MLB allowing the Rangers to add players when I’m the one paying for them.

This goes beyond revenue sharing supplementing a team’s income, the rest of baseball is fully covering their payroll.

And Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels are operating like a spoiled kid with his dad’s credit card.

  3. Tyler July 28th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

I know facing Lee in a 5 game series would be tough but what did the Yanks get CC for? I?m sure on Rangers blogs they are nervous about facing the big lefty. Sabathia will step up to the plate and go pitch for pitch with Lee. Y ou can gurantee it. ?It would be much different if the game 1 starter for the Yanks was a guy like Wang. Then Lee would make me nervous. CC is just as clutch and will get the job done.

  4. Tyler July 28th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

    Nick-

Tim Beckham could still become a superstar but I am so happy that the Rays did not add Posey. Adding him to that young stable would have been absolutely deadly.

I would love to see a well done documentary on the week in and week out routines that Yankees players/coaches/staff go through while on a road trip or on a homestand.

  6. Chad Jennings July 28th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

It’s true. I caught a bullpen this morning.

Looks like Bryan Hoch will be the starting pitcher for our media game against Boston next month, so I went to park here in Cleveland to catch for him this morning. We’ll probably do the same in Tampa. When he gets his curveball over for strikes, Hochy can pitch a little bit. I feel good about it.

  7. jpb173 July 28th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

    Copied from the last thread:

Does anyone know what Jorge Posada’s status is for tonight’s game? In addition to all of the other problems he’s had the last 2 years, he now has a knee problem. His body really does appear to be breaking down. I don’t think it will hurt the Yankees too much this season (especially if they can lock up a playoff spot fairly early…but I think the Yankees may have to carry 3 catchers next season (Posada, cevelli and either Montero or Romine).

Its a good thing that someone in the organization had the foresight to draft/sign multiple catchers a few years ago. I suspect that the Yankees feel better about the future at catcher for them than the Red Sox do about the future of that position in Boston.

  8. YankeeBlue222 July 28th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Any chance Bryan Hoch can take Park’s spot on the roster? ;)

  9. Chip July 28th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

    Chad,

A few of us have talked about what Texas is doing; I wonder if you’ve got any feeling about how executives around the game feel about a team that is bankrupt continuing to spend money to bring in players and MLB allowing them to do so?

  10. Rumors R Us July 28th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Chad – Go on with your bad self :)

I heard a rumor that you may be headed to the Globe in exchange for Chad Finn. Is that true? A Chad for a Chad?

  11. Bronx Jeers July 28th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Sounds like you may be bullpen catcher/pitching coach.

    Keep it going Chad.

It may be just the media game but we still want you to smoke em!

  12. Cashman needs to go July 28th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Does anyone know what Jorge Posada’s status is for tonight’s game?

Old with a chance of brain farts.

Speaking of Posada, what do the yankees do in the winter of 2011 if posada comes to them and mentions his desire to play 1 maybe 2 more years and he’d be “happy” to take “only” 7 million dollars per year? Do you clog up a spot on the 25 man roster and 7 mill per year on the payroll with a 40 year old DH that will be prone to the DL and really can’t catch anymore. Or do you bite the bullet and give him his years and money because of what he’s meant to the NYY throughout his career?

  13. Captain Clutch July 28th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Pineiro was scratched for the Angels game today against the Sox so Scott Shields is starting. Interesting starter….lol

  14. CountryClub July 28th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Unless Montero and/or Romine flame out, Posada’s last yr with the team is probaly next yr.

  15. Andrew July 28th, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Scot Shields did throw something like 200 pitches in a game he started once back in high school or college. I know this because McCarver says it literally every time the Angels are on Fox & Shields pitches

  16. jpb173 July 28th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

    ———————————————————————————————————

I think they Yankees paid Jorge well in the last contract that he got in before 2008. They don’t need to go out of their way to reward him any further. Posada’s been a great Yankee but his only value to them is as a catcher. He doesn’t seem to want to DH (and doesn’t do well when he tries to DH) and he can’t transition to another position. I think that Jorge’s career in New York will be over after the 2011 season.

  17. Yank 97 July 28th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

lol… Scott Shields is starting against Boston at the last minute?

Sox are licking their chops… Soscia couldn’t have chosen a worse pitcher.

  18. Nick in SF July 28th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

    A thousand slow deaths!
    Blue blistering barnicles!
    I made haiku foul

  19. CR9 July 28th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

lol @ the Angels. No Piniero at the last minute because of a “left oblique strain” while warming up. That’s code for Scioscia wanting the Red Sox killee Shields starting! Already a man on 2nd with 0 out. This ought to be a fun game.

  20. Cashman needs to go July 28th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

So CountryClub what you’re saying to posada is “thanks for your time with the NYY but we’re going a different route” and will allow him to sign with the Royals or Mariners or whomever will need a veteran catcher to teach some youngster the ropes?

  21. Captain Clutch July 28th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Pineiro has a left oblique strain. Good timing getting Haren especially when you give up garbage to get him.

  22. ZMAN July 28th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

If the Sox win… they would have gone 6-4 on this West Coast trip… not bad at all considering the circumstances.

Of course, they got a ton of breaks this Angels series, but they took advantage of it.

  23. jpb173 July 28th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Pineiro has a left oblique strain. Good timing getting Haren especially when you give up garbage to get him.

    —————————————————————————————————–

I don’t know about that. They might have been able to get Haren cheaper in the offseason. The reality is that the Angels are not going to make the playoffs this season and probably would have been better off waiting for the offseason to make a trade.

  24. Wave Your Hat July 28th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

    Is what’s good enough
    For the Babe also
    Good too for Jorge?

  25. CR9 July 28th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

And Ortiz arguing yet another called strike. Has Ortiz ever seen a called strike, in his opinion?

  26. Rumors R Us July 28th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Chan Ho Park to the Cardinals for a player to be named later. Deal to be done shortly.

  27. Cashman needs to go July 28th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

JPB173 i tend to agree with you, you can’t be tying up even a few million dollars on posada in 2012 if he’s going to sit out every other game with a nagging injury. I just figured with the way the yankees treat their heroes they give in to posada and keep him on, but they did kind of cut the lifeline with bernie, so i guess if they feel posada is done they may do the same with him. It would be strange to see him in a different uniform though, if it ever gets to that.

  28. stuart a July 28th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

jorge is done after next year unless you believe in 40 yr old catchers contributing…

if the yanks did not over pay for him he should be done this year…..

jorge is slowing down on all fronts….

  29. Captain Clutch July 28th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

“They might have been able to get Haren cheaper in the offseason.”
    ————

Cheaper?? They gave up a 5th starter and 19 year old “prospect”. I don’t think it gets cheaper than that….

  30. Mgumpher July 28th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Ortiz is probably just practicing his remarks about the PEDs he took, not arguing strikes, he would never do that… either.

  31. Warning Track Power July 28th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Chan Ho Park to the Cardinals for a player to be named later. Deal to be done shortly.

    ***********************************************************************

    I would welcome that trade.
At this point I trust Albie a lot more than I trust Park to get outs.

  32. Mgumpher July 28th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I doubt Jorge will be back after this contract runs out. At least as a catcher, or any other position player. Maybe as a coach or advisor, but I would think that Jorge knows he’s about wiped out as a catcher.

  33. Cashman needs to go July 28th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Great news – Desmond Jennings, the Rays phenom outfielder has just signed with the devil himself, Scott Boras. So that means no team friendly deal so the Rays can save themselves a few million. Finally we can start seeing teams other than the yankees having to pay a premium to keep their star players.

  34. jpb173 July 28th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

The yankees usually are able to keep some of their guys from joining another team by giving them jobs in the organization or inviting them to camp as a special instructor. I suspect thats what they’ll do with Jorge.

Yes. But I really think Jorge will retire like Bernie did. He’ll piss and moan about it, but i dont see him going to another team. Now listen, if he’s willing to come back for 2 mil…that may be a different story. But I have a feeling the injury plagued yr he’s had in 2010 and what you would think would also be an injury plagued 2011, will convince him that it’s time to hang them up.

Jorge is currently sporting a slash line of .269/.378/.493/.871, third best on the Yanks.

I wouldn’t be so quick to see him off.

  46. CR9 July 28th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

lol @ Scot Red Sox Shields. What are you looking at Scioscia with that dumbfounded look. Your team is a bunch of losers, and you’re not facing the interlocking NY

  47. Yankee Trader July 28th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Only heard that Street was released from the hospital last night, and was resting at home with an abdominal contusion. Are you interested in trading for him? Rockies are on the ledge-not sure if they’re buyers or sellers.

  48. ET July 28th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Shields doing what he does best… giving up HRs to the Sox. Already 2 so far and we’re only 5 outs into the game.

The Sox sweeping them would hurt in the standings, but it would be nice to see those losers from Anaheim fall even further back of playoff contention. Just have to hope the Sox don’t get hot now that their pitching is healthy.

  49. YankFanCA July 28th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Shields getting crushed. Would behoove the Yankees to break out and actually get a few hits and runs tonight.

  50. rconn23 July 28th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

The Angels aren’t winning anything this year. Hard to win with Alberto Callapso as your No. 3 hitter.

  51. CR9 July 28th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

lol @ ET. Shields is the Brian Roberts of the Angels. Without Shields on the roster in last year’s playoffs, they finally beat boston and finally lost to us. Another theory for why the angels lose to the sox is that shields is the cancer (bad luck) of the angels against them.

  52. Yankee Trader July 28th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Maybe if the Angels lose a few more they’ll put Dan Haren back on the trading block before Saturday!!!

  53. CR9 July 28th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

48 pitches through 1 2/3 innings. lol with darnell mcdonald, eric patterson, hermida and bill hall in the lineup.

  54. G. Love July 28th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

Relax people. We’re up on the Red Sox by 8 games in the loss column.

The sun will still rise if they win today and we lose tonight.

  55. Mgumpher July 28th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

YT, I doubt Street would be back in time for the deadline, which makes it harder. I think the Rockies are on the fence for what to try this year. The market isn’t well developed either, and the few pieces out there seem to be valued way too high for most teams, unless they are named the Rangers.

Street wouldn’t be a bad pick up, but he might still be out a while. Hard to tell how much damage that hit did, even if it didn’t need surgery to repair things.

Hey give the Angels a break this is the 1st time in what 10 years that they actually have to compete to make the play offs. It’s been really easy to just show up on October 1st and enter the play offs.

  60. Cashman needs to go July 28th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

I’ve always wondered as well how the Mike Napoli’s, Reid Brignac’s and just about every other scrub in baseball can become Babe Ruth or Cy Young against the Yankees and turn back into pumpkins when they face everyone else. But then I look at the yankees W/L record and think that some players that play really bad against the yankees (can’t think of one now except Vincente Padilla) must be playing like Babe Ruth or Cy Young against other teams or the yankees wouldn’t have the best record in baseball otherwise.

So my guess is these things even out for the most part.

    Lineup during the playoffs:
    Jeter SS

I’d watch what you say. I’d love to be able to bury the Sox too. However, there is still plenty of time left in the season.

Say they’re 5 GB on Sept. 1, their rotation is firing on all cylinders and everyone gets healthy, they could easily get hot and win this division.

  67. SJ44 July 28th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

If they are five out on September 1, they aren’t winning the division.

The obsession some have with the Red Sox on here is never going to end but, GF is right.

Worrying about them right now is a waste of time.
