Deal done: Oswalt to Philadelphia

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 29, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The third front-line starter swirling through trade rumors has finally been traded. Ken Rosenthal reports that the deal is done sending Roy Oswalt to the Phillies for J.A. Happ and two minor leaguers.

Now that Oswalt, Dan Haren and Cliff Lee are off the market, the rotation options seem limited to second-tier guys like Ted Lilly. Unless the Yankees are extremely concerned about Andy Pettitte’s groin or Phil Hughes workload, I don’t see why that sort of addition would interest Brian Cashman, but what do I know? I guess anything makes sense at the right price.

Thats like a really bad trade, but not even the worst trade made in the last week. Whats wrong with GMs

    Davidoff:

If Oswalt really wanted out “only if it helps the Astros” or whatever, wouldn’t he turn down this trade?

  3. CountryClub July 29th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Rosenthal says that the Yanks have moved on from Dunn. At least for now.

  4. ET July 29th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

    Awful trade

No Aumont? Dominic Brown? Ken Singleton? And the Astros pay almost all of his salary for this year?

Basically the same trade as the Haren one… centered around a mediocre, back of the rotation lefty, except the Angels might be sending better secondary guys and had to pay the full salary.

Why would any team trade for Ken Singleton? He’s more than 60 years old.

  16. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Matsui would be the perfect fit…unless they are counting on NJ coming back from whatever crippling injury he had.

  17. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

    Matsui or Damon, of course…

  18. Chambliss July 29th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Why did the Phillies trade Lee in the first place?

Call me nuts, but I would like to see crazy Kyle back in pinstripes. I think that Girardi and Eiland did a nice job with him, and my guess is that K.C. would part with him for mediocre prospects if the dollars were right.

  19. Bronx Jeers July 29th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

    And I like Singelton too.

But I would trade him for Kaat in a heartbeat.

  20. Bret The Hitman July 29th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

If you’re the Royals and desperate for financial relief like the Astros and D-backs, you’re at those returns for Haren and Oswalt, thinking you should probably not look to move Greinke.

  21. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

It’s obvious Cash is not parting with anything of value so a middle reliever at the last minute is all we might get.

  22. stuckey99 July 29th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

    “Matsui or Damon, of course…”

2009 called, she says it’s over. You’re just looking clingy and desperate now.

  23. Wave Your Hat July 29th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

No Matsui, but Damon wouldn’t be bad if the Tigers throw in the towel.

  25. mikey487 July 29th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

What I wouldn’t love is the press conference when he says “NY is the place I always wanted to be”

  26. Bret The Hitman July 29th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

edit: You’re looking at those returns for Haren and Oswalt

  27. Captain Clutch July 29th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

I don’t understand why the Astros are including so much money. In these deals you usually hear the better the prospects are the more money that will be included but these don’t seem like big time prospects. Happ isn’t unless the other 2 guys are. $15m isn’t that much money for Oswalt if the Phillies want him they should pay that. Now they only have to pay him $5m next year? That’s crazy, the Astros are stupid to send all of that money.

  28. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:37 pm

We can’t play musical DH in the playoffs.

  31. stuckey99 July 29th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Not a fan of going backwards, from a clubhouse dynamic standpoint.

Damon likely had a leadership role in the clubhouse and that vacuum has been filled this year and the team dynamic is now unique.

Damon (or even Matsui) coming back would create awkwardness if those players want/try to assume their previous roles.

I’d rather bring in a new blood to to create a new postseason dynamic, rather than trying to recapture an old one.

I don’t like the chances of that working out.

  32. sunny615 July 29th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

No on Matsui. His better days are in the past. Damon is a maybe, but the Tigers are still in it and will be until September.

It does look like the Yanks will be standing pat this summer. If there are any moves, they’ll probably be small meager ones, much in the vain of 09’s Hairston Jr or Hinske. In ‘10 tho, it may be more likely that it’ll be a bullpen guy.

  33. Dylan July 29th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Yankees don’t really need anything. A relief pitcher and a bat off the bench would be nice, but its not a necessity. Remember, one of the starters will be moved into the bullpen during the playoffs.

“We can’t play musical DH in the playoffs.”

I’m fine with bringing in a bat (though I’d be fine with Thames/Miranda/Johnson, maybe Montero goes supernuts in August). I just don’t like going backwards to get one.

  37. ET July 29th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

“Damon (or even Matsui) coming back would create awkwardness if those players want/try to assume their previous roles. ”

Not really… no one has filled Damon’s specific leadership role yet (i.e. calling out struggling players in the media). So he could slide right back into that no problem

  38. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

More than likely a Thames/Curtis DH platoon could happen.
We always had a wildcard like a Ledee or Chad Curtis to spark things come playoff time.

  39. Captain Clutch July 29th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

The Yanks don’t have room for an everyday DH. They need to leave that open since Posada is always banged up and the other veteran’s need a day here and there. If the Tigers fall out of it I would definitely take Damon back but not Matsui. Matsui’s bat has really slowed down and he hasn’t hit for weeks at a time this season. But the Yanks really need a relief pitcher much more than a hitter.

  44. CountryClub July 29th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Calling players out in the media does nothing to help the struggling player. Some fans seem to get a big kick out of it, but the players learn from being talked to in private. They don’t pay attention more because someone says something to a reporter.

They either take the advice and try to get better, or they don’t. Making it public doesn’t tip the scales.

except that was when we really needed a bat. A very necessary pick-up by Cash.

we don’t need one now. The offense is fine. Yankee fans are spoiled. And at times dilusional

  46. SJ44 July 29th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Kansas City doesn’t need financial relief. They are one of the most profitable franchises in baseball.

Which is why they aren’t interested in moving Greinke or Soria unless a team just blows them away with an offer that makes it a great baseball trade for them.

Don’t believe that every small market team is in financial peril.

The Dodgers have more financial woes than the Royals at this point in time.

  47. GreenBeret7 July 29th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Texas just took a hit in their infield and in their line-up. Ian Kinsler goes on the DL with a groin strain.

  48. mick July 29th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Another possibility is catching Cervelli in the playoffs and letting Jorge DH, even though his #’s are down in that spot. Don’t think they will give Miranda the shot, maybe Thames vs lefties, Jorge rightys.

    How do they get revenue?

  51. CountryClub July 29th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

    From Sherman:

The Yankees have all but given up hope of landing Nationals slugger Adam Dunn, The Post has learned.

The Yankees consider the current asking price steep and would only deliver that kind of package for a game-changing necessity, such as Cliff Lee, not for someone they consider a luxury, such as Dunn.

Plus, the Yankees were worried about giving up significant prospects and not being sure about Dunn as a DH. Dunn has spent his entire career in the NL, so he has never DH’ed regularly and has said repeatedly he does not want to be exclusively a DH. That combination made the Yankees wonder if he would adapt to the job, especially when you add on a new league, a new city, and a level of expectation Dunn has never experienced with the Reds, Diamondbacks or Nationasl.

Similar worries also – coincidentally – moved the Yankees’ nearest AL East pursuer, the Rays, away from Dunn, as well.

Dunn is a well-below-average defender at either first base or the corner outfield, so the Yankees did not see using him in the field except for, perhaps, a spot start. In addition, the Yankees want to use the DH slot regularly down the stretch as a rest sanctuary for Jorge Posada, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira.

To work through all of their issues involving Dunn, the Yankees feel the asking price by the Nationals would have to drop. But they are not anticipating that happening between now and the deadline at 4 p.m. Saturday. Thus, the frontrunners for Dunn appear to remain the White Sox and Giants.

    bret,

The Royals have one of the most successful regional sports network in the country. They also draw well, have an above average local radio deal and solid sponsorship deals.

Add in the revenue sharing money they receive and they are a very profitable franchise.

  61. Apple byte July 29th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
