I agree with Sherman.
DH is definitely a “rest sanctuary” for Posada.
Dunn doesn’t fit.
hmmm…I bet nobody guessed that line up
I was reading the Tampa Yankees program last night and the nicest thing they had to say about Montero’s future is the face that he is a nice trade piece. I was a bit shocked at them writing that in the program, but I guess there is no doubting how they feel about him.
“Texas just took a hit in their infield and in their line-up. Ian Kinsler goes on the DL with a groin strain”
———————————–
sad news. Texas has become one of my favorite teams this year. Namely, any team which can beat down the Angels
a promotion for grandy?
This is a different line up
DH is definitely a “rest sanctuary” for Posada.
–
You can rest Posada and still have a full time DH. Who DHs the other 4 days a week Posada isn’t DH?
Newsflash !!!….Toronto, Oakland, Detroit AND the Angels are NOT making the playoffs this year unless they make some HUGE upgrades and the teams in front of them simply fall on their faces. But of course, each of these teams will do next to nothing to help the hated Yankees, so we can essentially forget about a number of trade options with any of them.
There are no winners in today’s Guess the Line Up.
Isn’t Minute Maid Park terrible for LH pitchers?
Anyone confirm this?
You can rest Posada and still have a full time DH. Who DHs the other 4 days a week Posada isn’t DH?
=======================
That’s not exactly a fulltime DH and what about resting Jeter and Arod at DH?
They might actually have a problem if NJ comes back.
Sounds like the Yankees planted that story to Sherman to get the Nats attention.
I love how they are “worried about Dunn’s transition” yet are still interested if the price goes down! lol Can’t have it both ways! lol
Lots of posturing at this point and its still early in terms of prices on some of these guys. For guys that will get traded, the price will go down in the next 48 hours.
My guess? The Yankees are fully engaged on Dunn and will be until the Nats either trade him or keep him.
It looks like its going to be either going big or not going at all for the Yankees at the deadline.
As it should be with this team, IMO.
“But of course, each of these teams will do next to nothing to help the hated Yankees, so we can essentially forget about a number of trade options with any of them”
———————————————–
Detroit is in the middle of it. But on to your point…
it works for me (and we keep our prospects)
Now that Dunn is out, we can turn our attention to more realistic options like Greinke, Soria, DeJesus, and Billy Butler.

dejesus no longer an option…
Vinny, unless Texas brings in somebody from the farm, other teams will hold them up for help. My guess is that their cheapest option would be Willie Bloomquist, who would make a pretty good utility player for NYYs.
Who is the equivalent of Joe Saunders on the yankees – Sergio Mitre? Ivan Nova? Couldn’t the yankees have given the dbags (yes i spelt it like that) 3 joe saunders’s for the crap they took back for dan haren

Heard this: The reason why the Yankees have never traded Kei Igawa is because it would cost them a major chunk of luxury tax.

GB: yes. I expect you’re right. Hopefully, Texas can hold them off despite the Kinsler loss, and the Angels pick-up of Haren
how long can Igawa stay in the monors?
Anthony Gose, the prospect traded twice so far today, is listed a ’speedy center fielder.’
My question is: How speedy can you be when you’ve already been caught stealing 27 times this season?:

Saunders is better than Mitre and Nova.
He won 33 games in 2008-09.
Off year this year but, he’s a legit ML starting pitcher. Not great but, much better than Mitre and Nova.

Wonder why Joe would move Swisher out of the 2 hole? It seems like he has done very well there and has had the most of his abs there. Why mess with someone doing well? Not over reacting to it, just wonder why mess with a good thing. Plus love Gardner in the 9 hole.
Thanks Face.
I thought I remembered hearing that, but I can’t remember the last time I watched a game being played there.
And JA Happ is susceptiple to the long ball. He gave up 20 dingers last year in 160 innings.
That sounds like a pretty terrible combination of factors to me.
Is Igawa still alive?

He is not on the 40 man so doesn’t count against luxury.

Just for the sake of discussion.

—————————-
i was playing videogames with him, last weekend
I wonder how cocky Yanks would be if Posada went down and Cervelli became the fulltime catcher for the playoffs.
Wonder if the Thames /Miranda DH would be viable then…
Re: Igawa, if the Yankees were to trade him, they would have to pick most, if not all of his remaining salary because no team would take on that money for Igawa.
That means, the money Yankees pay on the deal is taxed on a 40% rate.
Its a weird byproduct of the luxury tax rules and it puts Igawa in “Minor League Jail” for the rest of this year and next year.
It would actually cost the Yankees around 2 million to trade him and they don’t want to pay that kind of tax to deal the all-time winningest pitcher in Scranton history.
Can’t we love Gardner wherever he bats?
Wonder how c*cky Yanks would be if Posada went down for the playoffs.
Need for a Dh would dramatically increase.

Or perhaps they are saving Posada for the Rays series which is the more important series.
He will probably play all three games in that series whether he’s DH’ing or catching.
Makes more sense to have him fresh for that series than playing tonight.
Its the prudent way of managing and older team.
Jorge Posada is not going to DH in the playoffs if the Yankees make it there. He’s going to catch.
The Yankees are not going into the playoffs with Juan Miranda or Marcus Thames as their DH.
Dunn is a very sensible target.
If Posada were to go down for the season or playoffs esp, the need for a DH would be dramatically increased. Cervelli fulltime in the playoffs is scary.

Is it me, or does that sound X-rated?
swisher is protecting cano tonight, grandy given a shot in the 2 hole cause he’s on fire…may be a trial run.
MTU,
I wouldn’t trade for Dunn alone. I would expand the deal to include Matt Capps.. If I couldn’t do that, then I would pass on the deal because Dunn is strictly a rental. I would want to have a player back from this transaction that will be with the team next year. That’s where Capps comes in. Plus, I think Capps can help them this year.
As far as Dunn is concerned, he helps the Yankees two ways. By whatever he contributes this year and the draft pick the Yankees garner when he departs.
I would offer Nova, McAllister and Adams and stay on that until the last minute.
If the Nats have a better offer, you tell them to come back to the Yankees before the trigger.
Then, you make a call. Do you add Noesi or Chamberlain to the mix if it would get the deal done.
That’s a tough call and it all depends on what the other offers the Nats have in order to decide what it would take to get both players.
I don’t mind picking up Dunn as long as we don’t pay through the nose for him.
i can’t believe oswalt ended up 1 win short of the astros team record… unfortunate for him.
I guess the Rangers just traded for Cantu:
Ken_Rosenthal #Marlins’ return for Cantu will be Double A RHP Evan Reed & Double A RHP Omar Poveda, who is on DL recovering from TJ surgery. #Rangers #MLB
Wow-I don’t think I ever would have guessed that lineup! LOL
Come to think of it, I’m not surprised Posada has the night off-the Tampa series is a lot more important than this game.
I think Girardi’s lineup tonight makes more than zero sense.
Batting Swisher 6th tonight is a function of Posada sitting. The theory is that the switch-hitting Swisher is the best bat to put behind Cano, rather than bump up lefty Granderson.
It’s not a punishment for Swisher, it’s a temporary vote of confidence for him and for Granderson.
stuckey – hah, that is dirty. wish i had done it on purpose… or realized that cano is still between him and alex :p
If NYYs need a left handed power bat that can play all four corners, they can bring Chad Tracy to the 40 man roster and bring him to NY. He’s been mashing everything and playing the infield corners as well as DHing.
CNTG – i laughed. snarkiness failed.

didn’t know Dunn was a FA, at end of the year.
in that case, Nova, Noesi, McCallister, Laird should all be made available.
The Marlins are also paying all of Cantu’s remaining salary in that deal.
Its the only way MLB would have approved the trade.

It’s incredible how good the shows are. I first saw him a few times at MSG 1989–and one time in rehearsal at the Lyceum Theatre–then in ‘93.
I then saw him live at Fenway last year (I’m convinced he put the hex back on) and I could not believe it. He sounded better than he did 20 years ago.
If you can see him this year, it’s well worth it. He’s really blanced the setlist with Beatles and Wings (five songs from 1974’s excellent Band on the Run), plus he’s opening with Venus & Mars/Rockshow, which he opend with back during the ‘76 Wings Over America tour.
Sorry to geek out here, but it’s always nice when love of the Yanks and Macca intersect.

There, I said it.
This is my sole (non)-trade gripe entry for the 2010 season.
And I did fret over the strikeouts but man, the Yanks can actually afford strikeouts this season. I believe they’re 26th out of 30.
Dunn just hit his 24th home run.
Ominous tones play in my head…Dunn dunn dunn dunn…..Dunnnnn!
Rangers get Cantu, somewhat mitigating the loss of Kinsler’s bat.
Spending other peoples’ $$$ is fun.
phil – the optimal lineup is grandersons speed in the 2hole i think… with swish stretching the lineup with his plate discipline
There are too many teams chasing Dunn for a Nova/McCallister/Adams deal to get done (no pun intended), IMO. I think it will take more than that, especially if Capps is in it.
I like Dunn, but the problem is his Thames-like outfield defense. I was thinking he could play the OF in the WS in an NL park, but after thinking about it I’m not so sure.
If he doesn’t play the OF, then his usefulness is limited if Posada and ARod are DH’ing 3 or 4 times a week.
The Yanks would be getting him for the AL portion of the post-season, and the 2 or 3 games of the WS in the AL park.
That helps, but it creates a gap between what he is worth to the Yanks and what he is worth to other teams who could play him at 1B or full time DH.
For that, I can’t see Nova/McCallister/Adams/Joba even if that would do it.
So my crystal ball says he’s not headed to the Yanks.

Those three are expendable.
Don’t know much about Capps one way or another.

I had the same privilege, of not having to see the Sox. Plus, the standings on the Green Monster listed the Yanks as 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston. That was the beginning of the end.
Pretty difficult to do much with just 44 at bats like Tracy was getting. With regular at bats, he’ll at least hit better than what Miranda has done.
The Rangers aren’t spending any money in the Cantu deal.
The Marlins are paying the remainder of his salary for the rest of this season.
Not that many teams are in on Dunn right now.
If the Yankees, Rays and White Sox drop out, its down to the Giants and their farm system is a bit short right now at the upper levels.
Its going to be interesting to see what the Nats do with Dunn.
There is still a chance they sign him to a three year extension. Which, truth be told, is what Dunn wants.

Things could surely change, but Swish has really performed in that spot and him being a SH allows Joe to keep the 1-7 the same everyday as long as Jorge is healthy. IMO you can’t hit Grandy in the 2 spot against lefties.
I am with you GF. Always loved the Stones.
I really doubt that Cash would give up a lot for Dunn since he is a free agent after this season and they don’t really need him. I agree if he came with a relief pitcher then it would make more sense depending on what they wanted. The Yanks have a lot of pitchers that will never be in the rotation so it would make sense to include some of those.

Cantu’s a Ranger
Kinsler on the DL
Astros flipped one of the prospects they got for Oswalt to Toronto for Brett Wallace
and reportedly the Yankees are out of it with regards to Adam Dunn.
cmon Al hit 600 tonight!
Wave,
That’s pretty much what I said yesterday. The Yanks are likely to make the playoffs with or without Dunn so I’m not giving up a whole lot for 2.5 playoff series….add Capps in there and its more interesting but then the price probably is higher as well.
The Jays must really like Gose. They just traded Brett Wallace to the Astros for him. Wallace has really good #’s in AAA.
“I prefer the Stones to the Beatles by a wide margin.”
I like both groups quite a bit, but if forced to choose between the two, the Beatles would win.
I’m not buying that the White Sox are out of the Dunn sweepstakes. Wouldn’t rule out the Rays either. Or the Rangers since they seem to be in on everyone. Or even the Braves, heck with Troy Glaus.

No thanks, we’re allergic.
gb7 – precisely. it took a 2 hot months to get them back to .500, so when they stop playing over their heads, they fade away. even if their pitching was lights out i don’t think they are going to outpace the rangers by 8 games. their 422 runs scored is better than seattle, cleveland, and baltimore…

I wonder; if the Yankees are out on Dunn (which I don’t know that they are, but that’s what’s being reported) would they have any interest in Brad Hawpe…kind of an Adam Dunn-lite
And I’m not sure what the Marlins are thinking in the Cantu deal – I thought the reason they were dealing Cantu was to get his money off the books, now they’re trading him, paying his salary and taking back a prospect on the DL with major arm surgery.
unfortunely everything pure speculation.

I tend to agree – in the end I think this could be a Mike Bordick situation where they trade him and then end up re-signing him in the winter.
I’d feel better about Dunn if it were a whole season to adjust to the new league and being a DH….but I think there is a chance he would struggle during the time the Yanks are renting him…at least enough chance to not give what it’ll take to get him.
Cantu just made his 10th throwing error of the season to spoil Anibal Sanchez’s perfect game bid in the 5th and the Panda then got a clean single to ruin the no-hitter.

Some people in Buckeye country were paying tribute to his “vicious” hits and him being a “head hunter” without mentioning Stingly. I sent this email to STO and Bruce Drennen.
Bruce
I’m glad you mentioned Jack Tatum’s passing today and he was a hard hitting
safety for the Buckeyes and Raiders. But I did cringe a little when you used the
term “head hunter” and “vicious” when talking about him, while you failed to
mention that his head hunting and vicious hit paralyzed Darryl Stigley. Should
have been a little more respectful when praising Jack, while remembering Daryl.
Saying he was hard hitting would of been enough. Vicious and head hunter was a
little extreme.

I think the Yanks would do it at the rice price, I just think it’s unlikely that the final price will land within a range the Yanks are willing to pay.

the interesting part of the oswalt deal is… the phillies rotation is still sporting kendrick and blanton, and this didn’t fix that. they’ve picked up like 3 wins by replacing happ with oswalt by the end of the season, but that’s not gonna help them catch the braves. it’s a scary sight in a 5 game set to see halladay, oswalt, hamels… but they have to get there first.

Phil, that entire Oakland team were headhunters. They had bounties on knockouts. I never understood why, even after bragging about the intentional dirty hits, why Rozelle didn’t suspend Tatum. I just watched it again, and I found myself yelling “watch out”. Stingley never had a chance. Through those 20 or so years that he survived, Stingley never said a word about Tatum’s hit. A truly class act in the mold of Gayle Sayers and Walter Payton.

By the way – I am doing my best not to go on a tirade about how; regardless of what the so called experts may think about Montero’s catching ability, he needs to get the call up here to do the lion’s share of the catching for the remainder of the season.
Cervelli’s offense has completely regressed and Posada can’t catch two days in a row without missing time.
Best thing for the Yankees, if they’re not going to make a deal for a legit DH, is to keep Posada’s bat in the lineup as often as possible by DHing him.

Yeah tells me a few things:
Montero was in a massive slump to open the season
Cervelli was riding a very hot streak
The Yankees have been thinking more with their hearts than with their heads regarding Posada (or that they were worried about Jorge spouting off again about how he “isn’t ready to be a DH”)

He can get those for chump change. He’s a team player. a starting pitcher and a DH/corner outfielder. Move Hughes to the 8th inning when Pettitte comes back and get the parade permits ready.
Posada needs to be the dh. He obviously still can rake. He is 30 points above his career ops. He is just old and cant handle the catching like he used to.

I was trying to be a little nicer about it, but yeah, that’s about right.
The Yankees will not call up Montero to be the fulltime catcher now. But the reality is the Yankees won 5 world series with a catcher in Posada, who wasn’t a defensive beast. Montero is still a kid, so they should stick with him at catcher and plan to have him take over when the time comes.
Chip -
But in terms of his confidence and development?
I don’t think in NY it’s worth the risk.

Juan Miranda is not in the same class as Jesus Montero as a hitting prospect.
Besides, if Jorge needs two days off for every day he catches, how does that help the team?

Occam’s Razor says the Yanks don’t think Montero’s ready to catch in the majors yet.
Just let Montero mature and ripen on the farm. There are bats to be had.

If the Yankees REALLY DO need to bring up a catcher for the stretch run it will be Cahd Moeller…not Montero.
Montero isn’t remotely ready to handle a major league pitching staff. The most important job a catcher has. Especially for a team trying to win a WS.
0% chance Montero catches meaningful games for the Yankees this year.
Miranda, not sure if he ever could be a full time player. He seems to have power. We just haven’t seen enough of him. It would be nice if he built up some trade value though.

If adversity is going to destroy his confidence and set back his development then he’ll never be able to hack it as a major leaguer.

Cantu just beat out a throw (it was a bad call) for an infield single in SF.
And now he’s on 3rd base!
Nolan Ryan must be livid.
Posada’s need to DH is why I think SJ is on to something, that the Yanks may not be looking at just Dunn, but Dunn + Capps.
Think about it from a value standpoint. Not only is Dunn a rental, but if Jorge needs to DH a significant amount of time – which is how it’s looking – it negates Dunn’s value, ’cause he sure ain’t playing the OF, not with who the Yanks can put out there. Therefore, to make the deal worthwhile, Capps for the pen would make the price paid worth it.
JMO.
There is no rush to bring him up. I have no doubts he could probably hit now though.

You’re probably right but he would have three great tutors to help him through that in Posada, Pena and Girardi.
And if not Montero then someone else, John Buck, Miguel Olivo, someone – the Yankees cannot keep up this nonsense with Posada. The man is physically unable to handle the position on a regular basis. How much more evidence of that do we need?
“Montero was in a massive slump to open the season”
And he’s still just a 20 year old kid who has hit well a for only HALF the season.
This would be a classic panic-rush job if there ever was one.
And to respond to what? A “problem” have dealt with just fine up until now…
How does that make sense?
Posada just has to swallow his pride. His bat is too important to the team.
” the Yankees cannot keep up this nonsense with Posada. The man is physically unable to handle the position on a regular basis. How much more evidence of that do we need?”
Yankees are 64-39.
How much more evidence do YOU need that the Yankees have handled Posada’s limitations perfectly well?
It doesn’t happen in NY that way.
It might. But in my mind, you don’t throw a rookie into a NY Yankees pennant race at a position of huge importance. Cabrera wasn’t a catcher. And he may hit, but he’s still learning his craft. You don’t think if he lets a few key passed balls go by it won’t affect his hitting?
64-36.

Boy, I don’t know how Posada is going to be the starting catcher next year; he can barely catch this year – and he’s getting old quickly in terms of his aches and pains.
Jayson Stark just ravaged Oswalt. Kay asked him what other teams felt about him and Stark said that while his stuff is still great – he’s had terrible body language and has been a terribly negative influence on his team, sucking the positivity from that clubhouse

Latest on Dunn:

Joelsherman1 #Giants are really only other team for which I am hearing any connection to Dunn

I don’t know how Jorge is going to be the regular catcher next year. The guy is getting old very quickly whatwith his aches and pains; he can’t catch most of the time – period.
Jayson Stark just killed Roy Oswalt on Kay’s show.. He said that while Roy still has great stuff, his body language has been awful and he’s basically sucked all the positivity from the clubhouse, being as negative as he’s been

Next year is next year; the Yankees will have the off-season to figure out next year. I’m sure they’ll address Posada’s growing physical limitations.
I just don’t think it would be fair to put Montero in where Cervelli is. When Cervelli was called up, he was told all they cared about was his defense; his offense was icing on the cake and totally unexpected (and now virtually non-existent, too). But with Montero, you need him to hit to to have value PLUS you need him to handle the catching duties in a very stressful atmosphere. I think it’s asking too much.
Agreed Doreen.
i think it’s useless worrying about Montero at this point. Sure Posada gets banged up more often now than in the past, but he is not incapable of catching. he still has enough left to easily get the Yanks thru this season, along with Cervelli. Montero needs more time to develop and the Yankees know that. there’s no rush. Posada is not bound for the DL right now, and if they ever do need a 3rd catcher this season, it won’t be Montero. there’s no use in curbing his development when the Yankees are dominating with the best record in baseball. they’re fine.
Posada hurt his foot with a foul ball & has a cyst behind his knee that is painful to very painful. Neither of those are based on age! Posada will tough out the pain when it means something, but when he doesn’t have to play in major pain he won’t.
The Posada haters are lying in wait to lerch out and punish Jorge! It is really comical & pathetic. He is light years better than Cervelli even when Posada is hurt. Posada is the catcher for almost all meaningful games. The Yanks have the luxury of being able to rest Posada due to play so far this year. (Sure TB is close, but I bet Posada plays 2 if not all 3 games as a catcher.)
If Houston is willing to pick up some of Oswalt salary, what about making an offer for Berkman? Maybe they will be willing to do the same with Berkman. Switch hitting DH who is a FA next year.
Why are the Marlins paying Cantu’s contract? Geez………….I don’t want to hear that owners are complaining behind closed doors about this when they are the ones making trades with the Rangers.
Still – no on Dunn and/or Capps.
Wallace trade make Berkman a favorite to be moved. They play the same position. As a 5 and 10 guy Berkman can almost dictate where he is willing to go. He might only cost money and a second line prospect. It’s a decent gamble if he wants to come here.
MTU, nope have not heard back from Bodhi, but am sure I will shortly.
i would avoid Berkman. overweight, old, past his prime, not versatile. no thanks.
Doreen July 29th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
I agree with you & SJ about Montero not catching any meaningful games this year, but his bat may be in YS come Sept after AAA playofs.
Doreen, – I don’t even have a solution, except to say that I don’t want to see more of Cervelli. This could be a real problem for the Yankees; sure they have C depth, but that C isn’t close. Montero isn’t ready and Romine definitely isn’t
By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 4:00pm CST]
4:00pm: Though Cantu is on the field for the Marlins, the Rangers will acquire him, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter). The Marlins will pay $600K of Cantu’s salary.
Tejada to Padres.
Dunn-On the fence still. Berkman has played better in July, switch hitter. Might be worth a try to get him, especially if the Astros want to pick up some of his 5.4M contract and/or his 2011 2M buyout.

——————————–
They weathered the Posada stuff in large part because Francisco Cervelli played out of his mind. He has regressed big time lately.
I have no doubt that their lineup is still good enough without Posada to beat the Cleveland Indians or Kansas City Royals, but the best thing they can do is bring in another catcher so that Jorge can play as often as possible at DH. Let him catch 1 or 2 games a week to give Alex or someone else time at DH, but Jorge’s bat is too important for him to miss games everytime he catches.
Ray, I am not a Jorge hater………………not even close. The fact is, he doesn’t C the majority of the time and he’s been banged up. Reality is reality – I hope the Yankees (I’m sure they do) have a plan for next year because I don’t think Jorge/Frankie splitting time is going to work.
how anyone could complain about Cervelli is beyond me. he is a plus catcher defensively, good range and a good arm. works well with pitchers. and overall, how can you be unhappy with his offense? .260 average + 30 RBIs in less than 200 at bats? more than you could even expect. with all the power in the lineup around him, Cervelli’s numbers are fine from a great defensive catcher.
Betsy-
See my 5:54 post above. Cantu had a 6M contract and then is a FA. Marlins apparently picking up 600K of what’s left.
Posada has caught in 60% of his games played. With a competent backup that is just fine. He has played 20 games this month and DH’d in 7 of them.
Its very reasonable to expect him to do the same from now until next year.

You’re right about Posada, IMO, except I have to give the edge to Cervy on blocking the plate, handling wild pitches and throwing. Nobody knows how to handle AJ, not even AJ. But when it comes to clutch offense and those bloody intangibles, Sado is still one of the keys to the team.
Posada, like Jeter, Mo and Pettitte, is clearly entering the twilight and there’s nobody who can fill their shoes on the horizon. Time to cherish them while they are still around. It’s going to be a sad day when they retire.

he has a reputation as a plus catcher, but this year it hasn’t manifested. you can blame it on the pitching staff but he just hasn’t been that effective. Additionally, hitting .200 .283 .253 .536 from June 1 on. He has zero power.
Not a great backup when you consider how much playing time he is going to get. Its like Ramiro Pena. Great backup…when he plays a couple times a month. Not twice a week.
