Next stop, Tampa

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 30, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s no fun calling the hotel’s front desk at 2 a.m. to ask for a 4 a.m. wake up call. It’s less fun when that wake-up call actually comes.

The beat writers’ exodus from Cleveland has begun. Thankfully, the Cleveland airport had a restaurant that was already open at 5 a.m. I went with French toast, and I’ll probably regret it when I’m 30,000 feet over Georgia.

The Yankees, of course, got out of town a few hours after the game. Next stop is Tampa for a three-game set against the second-place Rays.

“We’re going to have to play at a very high level,” Joe Girardi said. “It’s going to take a lot of games to win this division. We’re basically where we were two weeks ago, but the bottom line is, we’re winning games, we’re winning series, and that’s what we need to worry about.”

Good morning Chad. Ugh, it’s going to be a long day for you guys. Have a safe trip. I know what you mean about french toast; I love it, but I’m always sorry I’ve eaten it.

Not looking forward to the cowbells this weekend. But it should be a good series. Last night after the game, YES posted the numbers relating to how the Yankees and Rays have played each other thus far. The numbers were sooooooooo close. And, oddly, the pitching numbers weren’t stellar, especially considering the quality of the starting pitching on both teams. What I didn’t realize was that after these 3 games, they play each other 10 more times.

Would love for the Yankees to take 2 of the 3, obviously. But one win will keep them in first place, albeit tenuously.

  2. JoeyA July 30th, 2010 at 6:36 am

It really is amazing what these 2 teams are doing. They are obviously, by far, the 2 best teams in baseball.

Just goes to show you can have two totally different paths lead to the same success. The Yankees are the money spending, home run hitting juggernauts of baseball and are battling a $60M payroll, small ball Rays team for the AL East.

This is why baseball is great.

  3. Doreen July 30th, 2010 at 6:40 am

Looking at the standings this morning.

    Yankees Road record: 31-20.

    Rays Home record: 30-20.

    Yankees Home Record: 34-18

    Rays Road Record: 33-18.

Totally opposite – like a mirror view. :)

  4. Doreen July 30th, 2010 at 6:49 am

No, I was wrong. After these three games, they play 7 more times. I could have sworn I heard John Flaherty say they play each other 10 more times after these three games. They go back to Tampa in mid-September for 3 and then play them 4 at home the following week.

    good morning Chad
    have a good flight

    Doreen
what game are your parents attending?

  6. Yankee Trader July 30th, 2010 at 7:26 am

Good morning all. Is this Joe Maddon trying to get inside A-Rods head to have him try and swing for the fences against his pitching staff, getting him out of his current rhythm?

  7. Erin July 30th, 2010 at 7:31 am

Chad-sounds like you’re in for a LONG day. Hopefully you’ll be able to sleep on the plane.

  8. Fran the original July 30th, 2010 at 7:35 am

    Safe travels Chad.

Looking forward to this weekend series. Hope the Yankees can take 2 of 3. And want to see Alex’s 600 HR.

  9. Asd July 30th, 2010 at 7:35 am

Oy, Chad. You are going to be dead tired tonight. I do not envy you right now. Oh, wait, you get to travel everywhere with the Yankees. Yes, I still envy you.

  10. blake July 30th, 2010 at 7:35 am

    Have a safe flight Chad.

Last nights win was pretty big because now the Yankees only need one win (obviously more would be good) to leave Tampa still in first place.

Should be a fun series and I think the pitching matchups could favor the Yanks. Hopefully Alex gets the homer this weekend but to echo what Patrick said last night, it really doesn’t matter…he’s driving in runs and producing for this team. For a “down year” he certainly is having a pretty good year.

  11. PacoDooley July 30th, 2010 at 7:36 am

Thankfully, it’s already afternoon here (UK), but I know that 4am feeling when travelling – not pleasant.

This is a HUGE series I think, even with the 7 remaining. The fact that they can leave out of first place or with a 5 game lead means it can produce a huge swing. Obviously they can leave in a similar position they are now in, but psychologically it is a big difference between being in second place of 5 games out in first.

Their schedule starts to tighten after those 8 games against the weak Central Division teams. So it makes a big difference which trajectory they are on after this weekend…

  12. upstate kate July 30th, 2010 at 7:39 am

First of all, Alex is going for 600, which while it is a nice round number, doesn’t mean anything in the HR standings. It doesn’t mean he will move past anyone. Second, Maddon must not watch sports center, they have at least one segment on Alex’s quest for 600 every day. And third, how sure are we that Thome never took anything? I don’t see that fans will be more excited if/when Thome gets close.

  13. upstate kate July 30th, 2010 at 7:42 am

sorry, I should have said my comments were in response to the article that Yankee Trader posted!

  14. Doreen July 30th, 2010 at 7:47 am

    upstate kate -

My parents are going to Sunday’s game. It’s interesting that last night they said all three games were sold out; when my mom got the tickets about 2 weeks ago, she said there were a lot of seats available.

    Madden’s comments: Whatever! :)

  15. Bronx Jeers July 30th, 2010 at 7:51 am

I do hope Thome makes it. It won’t happen this year but he’s done a real good job in limited duty.

I really wanted him in pinstripes this year. I think the fans would have adored him.

  16. Tar July 30th, 2010 at 7:51 am

    Good morning everyone.

Blake did you happen to read the Joe Posnaski post on Coach Smith? If not here it is.

    http://joeposnanski.com/JoeBlo.....#more-3728

  17. upstate kate July 30th, 2010 at 7:53 am

and as a further comment about Alex’s quest, I am sure that helped sell seats for the Indians…I got a laugh out of the fans crowding around the OF seats everytime Alex was at bat.

  18. Northy July 30th, 2010 at 7:56 am

I once remember Posada was asked what changes he would implement if he were to suceed Bud Selig.

The first thing Posada suggested was that by rule, the rubber game of a series should always be a daygame when the awayteam starts a new series the next day…

Travelling in the middle of the night is the not so fun part of being a ballplayer.

  19. upstate kate July 30th, 2010 at 7:59 am

    Bronx Jeers
my sister is a die hard sox fan, and Thome has been a notable sox killer. She has sent me one sentance emails saying “I hate that Jim Thome” and I would know he got them again. After seeing a Kim Jones interview, I told my sister that Thome seemed like a really nice guy, and she had to reluctantly admit that was probably true, but she still doesn’t like him.

  20. upstate kate July 30th, 2010 at 8:02 am

    Northy
it seems like most getaway games are day games, unless the Yankees are involved. Does the home team decide whether it is a day or night game? It seems like they are just trying to maximize their profits while the Yankees are in town.

  21. blake July 30th, 2010 at 8:02 am

    Tar,
I hadn’t read it…just did. Thanks for that. He really is an amazing guy. I’m currently reading Roy’s book…its pretty remarkable how he came up…many of the places he discusses from his childhood are very familiar to me which makes it even more interesting.

  22. Bronx Jeers July 30th, 2010 at 8:08 am

    Northy,

Yeah I don’t know why teams just don’t fly out late the next morning. CLE-TPA is only a bit over 2 hours. Why not leave at 11:00am? It’s not like the Yankees are going to have to switch planes in Atlanta or something.

I should be the assistant to the traveling secretary. Is there a more prestigious job in sports? I think not.

  23. Chuck58 July 30th, 2010 at 8:09 am

I will laugh my pants off if Alex hits #600 as an inside-the-park HR ;-)

  24. Bronx Jeers July 30th, 2010 at 8:13 am

    upstate kate,

I think Thome’s regarded as one of the nicest guy’s in MLB. A gentle giant.

  27. Betsy July 30th, 2010 at 8:13 am

It’s ridiculous that the Yankees had to play last night when the Rays got to play during the day………yeah, the Tigers were leaving, so that played a part, but the Yankees were leaving, too, so why didn’t the Indians get to play a day game?

  28. Betsy July 30th, 2010 at 8:14 am

People (you, Mark Feinsand) should stop complaining that the Yankees are only 2 games up – as if that’s a bad thing. When the 2nd best team in baseball is in your division, and it’s not by default – they are a terrific team – what else should be expected?

  29. Rishi July 30th, 2010 at 8:16 am

the home team gets to decide when they want to play the games (unless they are nationally televised) So, if there are no rules in place and you finally have the Yankees in town – you keep all games at a time when you can sell more tickets…this has been happening A LOT in recent years. I would say, percentage-wise, the vast majority of Yankee day games have been at home.

  30. Bret The Hitman July 30th, 2010 at 8:18 am

    Good morning :)

I hope everyone is feeling perky this morning and excited about the day.

As some of you regulars know, I started an Anti-twitter movement on Twitter mocking the rumor mongers of the baseball trade season.

The mission was always to energize Yankees fans and demoralize those of the opponent by suggesting lopsided trades that favor the Yankees to the level of absurdity.

These trades are purposefully and playfully outlandish. They’re designed to be obviously false…but apparently some fans don’t get the joke.

Here’s some of my hate mail on Twitter.

Thought it might brighten your day.

Betsy, the night game was all about the Benjamins….
the “right” thing to do on getaway day is the ol’ Businessman’s Special, 1 PM start.
[I would think that's an unwritten rule, but unwritten rules between owners don't fly.]
Cleveland made more money with a 7 PM start, and there it is.

  32. Betsy July 30th, 2010 at 8:20 am

Rishi, that makes sense………but it stinks.

As to this series, Hughes and Davis are about the same. Javy and Garza? It depends if Garza is back to his old self; if he is, he has the edge. CC obviously has the edge on Shields..but still, he had the edge on Tomlin. He’s not been that sharp lately, so who knows?

  33. SAS July 30th, 2010 at 8:20 am

Good morning everyone. Chad if you are not in flight now, I wish you a good one.

My son complains all the time that the Yankees always have to play night games before they travel, and that it isn’t fair. I agree. I don’t think they can leave the morning after the game for weather reasons.

Hopefully, the guys have learned how to relax and sleep on these flights.

Last night’s game was something else. I thought Mosely did a great job, and when the Yankees bats came alive it was exciting for a while….until it started to go on and on and on.

    “Good morning everyone.

Blake did you happen to read the Joe Posnaski post on Coach Smith? If not here it is”

    Tar:

Nice piece. Little sad that things aren’t going well for him now, but what a legacy. I was a big ACC fan, growing up in VA. Actually was a U of Maryland fan, which meant considerable disappointment at Smith’s hands over the years.

Only thing I couldn’t stand about his work was the 4 corners offense. Just brutal to watch. I remember back in ’79 he STARTED a game against Duke in the four corners. Heels took two shots the entire 1st half and were down 7-0 at the break. Smith played it straight in the 2nd half, but Duke won 47-40. Then he played them straight again in the ’79 ACC tourney title game and UNC won that. Never understood why he did the four corners thing that night.

  52. Nat July 30th, 2010 at 8:34 am

Alex is so considerate to hold off on hitting the HR until he made it to the Yankees second home for a Yankees fan to catch. He’s so sweet. :)

  53. Betsy July 30th, 2010 at 8:36 am

Chuck, it was for the game-time comments!

“**Why is it the Yankees refuse to see Robertson as that guy?”

I think they kind of do by default now. He’s pitched quite well. After a pretty miserable start to the season, he’s allowed runs in only 3 of his last 27 appearances (going back to May 8) accumulating a 2.22 ERA over 28 and 1/3 innings.

Only problem with him is he still walks too many guys. Over that 28 1/3, he’s walked 15 batters while also allowing 25 hits. That’s amounted to a .345 OBP against over that time. And that’s while he’s pitching well. He’s got a pretty good knack for keeping the guys he puts on from scoring. But in 13 of those 27 appearances, he’s allowed at least two baserunners. I’d imagine it’s difficult for a manager to be entirely comfortable with that aspect of Robertson’s game.

MTU-thanks for the link! Far Side is always a good way to start the day.

I’m raising a conspiracy theorist!

My son wanted to know if I thought MLB could have done anything to the “special” baseballs Alex is using to slow down him hitting 600.

I guess I need to keep my feelings about Bud and MLB management to myself more.
