Garza vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 7:10 p.m. / YES Network
UMPIRES: HP Scott Barry, 1B Bill Welke, 2B Mike DiMuro, 3B Tim Welke
WEATHER: Same as the weather in your living room.
FROM THE BEGINNING: With Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns on the team, the Yankees now have nine players who were drafted in the first round (Berkman, Kearns, Hughes, Jeter, Moseley, Rodriguez, Swisher, Sabathia and Teixeira). Joba Chamberlain was a supplemental first-round pick.
NO-NO NO PROBLEM: Matt Garza threw a no hitter in his previous start. The last time the Yankees faced a starting pitcher coming off a no-no was 1991 when they won against Wilson Alvarez. They had eight hits off Alvarez and won on a Roberto Kelly walked off single. That’s coming from Elias.
HEARTY AND HUSTLEY: Gritty, gutty Brett Gardner has been named the yankees winner of the MLB Players Alumni Associated Heart and Hustle Award. The award honors a players who “demonstrate passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and tradition of the game.” An overall winner will be chosen from the 30 individual team award winners.
UPDATE, 7:32 p.m.: Double. Single. Sac fly. Those were the first three batters Javier Vazquez faced, and they were enough for a 1-0 Rays lead in the first inning.
UPDATE, 8:10 p.m.: Brett Gardner clearly thought he could make that catch, instead his dive turned a double into a triple with one out here in the third inning.
Meanwhile, the game is tied because of a sac fly in the second. Sorry for the lack of updates. Just a little too much to write right now.
UPDATE, 8:12 p.m.: RBI single by Crawford brings the run home and gives the Rays a 2-1 lead.
UPDATE, 8:45 p.m.: Garza just sent the side down in order in the fifth. So far, Robinson Cano has two doubles, and that’s it for the Yankees. Garza has absolutely shut them down. Vazquez has pitched well, but the 2-1 lead remains.
UPDATE, 8:55 p.m.: Double. Sac bunt. Sac fly. It’s only one more run, a two-run lead seems massive considering the way Matt Garza is pitching. Rays are up 3-1 heading into the sixth.
UPDATE, 9:00 p.m.: For whatever reason, I like the word clobbered and try to use it only when it absolutely applies. Mark Teixeira just clobbered that ball to right field for a two-run homer that has tied the game at 3. Whatever word you like — crushed, smoked, destroyed — feel free to use it. Teixeira hit that ball very, very hard.
UPDATE, 9:15 p.m.: Not sure whether TV showed this or not, but Javier Vazquez came off the mound positively screaming at himself after giving up a solo home run to Matt Joyce. Obviously things would be a lot different right now if Joyce weren’t with this team. Rays are up 4-3.
UPDATE, 9:25 p.m.: Swisher’s 20th homer of the season has tied the game at 4. Safe to say he was pretty excited about it.
UPDATE, 9:34 p.m.: No chance Vazquez was going to face John Jaso again. Here comes Boone Logan. By the way, the Rays played the song Hey Joe while Girardi walked to the mound. Well done.

Repost
True story.
When I was in college (Purdue University), a bunch of buddies/classmates decided to round up a crew to go see the Cubs at Wrigley Field back in May of 1998.
I was supposed to go to the game that day but I backed out at the last minute because the weather was rotten and it simply appeared like it was going to be a miserable day to be at the ballpark.
Turns out, Kerry Wood pitched that day and struck out 20 Astros. Those guys never had a chance. The lone hit he gave up was a swinging bunt.
Wood had some of the nastiest stuff I had ever seen. Fastball touched 100 MPH and threw two ridiculous offspeed pitches (sweeping slider and curve ball).
Little did I know that I would miss one of the most dominating performances in MLB history.
And I’ve been kicking myself ever since.
Wood used to be one helluva talent. It’s a shame the injury bug bit him so many times.
GF, I missed out on a Yankees/Orioles game earlier this season because I also didn’t want to deal with the potential bad weather – but I didn’t miss out on a 20 K performance. Ouch – sorry about that!
Can Lance Berkman hit AL pitchers? I doubt it.
FYI: ‘whiskey’ is not the same thing as ‘Scotch’.
The only one so far who hasn’t struggled since pitching his no-hitter was Halladay. Here’s hoping that Garza is one to go with the norm…
UGH

FYI: ‘whiskey’ is not the same thing as ‘Scotch’.
___________
But many people refer to it as the same. I’m thinking Garza with his billy goat look is one such person.
Jeter starts the game the way it usually starts on the road. 1 pitch, 1 out.
nice AB capt.
I wish there was a way to listen to the announcers but mute the minor league cow bells.
good at by berkman
“But many people refer to it as the same.”
Those people are wrong. In fact, if it is being spelled properly as ‘whiskey’, then it is not Scotch whisky (spelled without the ‘e’).
Scotch is a type of whisk(e)y, but it is not the same as Irish whiskey, Bourbon, Rye, etc.
If Garza bought his teammates engraved bottles of a good single malt, I would be very impressed indeed.
first flyout in the new team.

LOL
When was the last time Jeter got a hit on the first pitch? It’s been awhile.
Nice AB “Big Puma”!
Throw a strike there Javy.
Oh, God. Tino’s in the booth again tonight. God knows I love Tino, but he just doesn’t have an announcer’s voice.
my money is Javy don’t make it out 4th today. zero confidence on in that guy in a big game. Zero.
Obviously not a good beginning….
Oh man, these Rays are annoying!
Those people are wrong. In fact, if it is being spelled properly as ‘whiskey’, then it is not Scotch whisky (spelled without the ‘e’).
__________
Kind of hard to tell the “e” is in or not when you say it though.
I tend to doubt that Kim was getting that information in a written message. lol
those rays are a really good team
get into trouble right out of gate
There goes 1 run. Not as bad as it could have been though.
This would be a good game for Javy to finally pitrch well in a big game. Not a good start, obviously.
He’s got to give the team at least a chance.
Gardner and Berkman would’ve been nice to see at 1 and 2. But Jeter won’t let that happen.
another close call that goes against us. he probably was safe, but the call could have gone in our favor.
The answer: no ‘e’ but no Scotch either.

drill one of those annoying rays
I think Gardner is every bit as fast, if not faster than Crawford, yet Gardner uses his speed far too sparingly. Few infield hits, too few stolen bases.
JobaTips
Rather drill Red Sox than a Ray. Where’s the pleasure in drilling any Ray?
I hope Javy settles down after this and finds his good stuff.
Was there an update on the person hit with the bat last night?
Eh. Royal Crown doesn’t do it for me, but I would guess they wouldn’t be drinking it anyway.
@rconn, Javy’s fastball simply won’t fool anyone, He has to be extremely fine with his off speed stuff… we see. it’s tough to pitch that way.
seemed like Berkman happy to be in pinstripes; just think he doesn’t want to embarras himself
Loser Jim Leyland left in Perry after 1 2/3 innings to give up a leadoff baserunner in the 9th. I wish Leyland would have mismanaged the bullpen against us.
I think Gardner is every bit as fast, if not faster than Crawford, yet Gardner uses his speed far too sparingly. Few infield hits, too few stolen bases.
–
Gardner has 7 less stolen bases than an accomplished, veteran basestealer who has had 5 seasons to perfect his craft.
Gardner has 2 more infield hits than Crawford.
I’m back – haven’t blogged on here since last season! missed it
Makers Mark spells it whisky.
Brackman perfect through the first two innings for Trenton. 1 k.
Montero lead off double to the right center fielder wall.
Mesa a 3 run HR for Tampa # 14 tenth since June I believe.
If the Red Sox could actually drive runners in at a better rate, they’d be phenomenal. They have a knack for getting leadoff runners on, it’s amazing. Today, 7 of 9 leadoff runners on but only 2 runs thus far.
I would love to hear a conversation between Tino and Shannon Sharpe.
Crawford has more power than Gardner
single is fine, a-rod
my money is Javy don’t make it out 4th today. zero confidence on in that guy in a big game. Zero.
————————–
I’ll take that bet.
Get this homerun over with- please!
Do you remember moose in 2008?? well i think javy has a litle bit more stuff right now so i think he can succeed he just have to locate very well

not bAd at all
That’s no engraved bottle. It’s an embroidered bag! They do that at the mall don’t they?
I don’t think that’s a very good bottle of booze either.
omg, Kay is such a fool
here we go!
I’m just glad Garza’s no hit streak is over.
Robby is about to go on a tear again.
Come on Nick.
Lets go Yankees…..
omg, Kay is such a fool
—————
Amen!
Is Makers Mark good enough for that affectation? It’s been years since I’ve sipped that one… if ever.
Here’s Shannon Sharpe with Pete Abe Twitter pal Jenn Sterger:
http://blogs.tampabay.com/phot.....sharpe.jpg
Nice double there Cano! Come on Yankee offense, put this guy in his place.
Drive those run in, Nick!
That was a great shot of Cano’s swing.
Mark dis Grace is just another Red Sox broadcaster for FOX. Just work for NESN, Mark dis Grace
And the Rays commentators are already complaining about balls and strikes.
that was ball 4
comeon, swish
Maker’s Mark is good. Though my preference is for a nice single malt… though there are quite a number in my list.
swish is too anxious calm down
big pitch
Alright Swish. Just guessing again, and taking strike 3 right down the middle! Woohoo
I guess that was a strike. Dang.
Come on Grandy, hurt this turkey.
can they score 1 run right here?
Not a productive out.
Garza wanted no part of throwing the FB to Swish. Great pitch
The Tigers suck.
How about that Phil Coke!
Coke loses the game in the 9th.. Sox win 5-4… Coke was flat I guess!
Alright, and the Red Sox walk off with a win! WooHoo! As the Tigers outfielders ran away from the ball in the outfield to let the winning run score from 1st!
Brackman another perfect inning.
Come on Curtis battle.
that one was really close!! he is got a big curve today damn!!
Detroit bites. A give away game.
Did Coke point?
For those of you being tortured by the TB announcers, the game is on MLB Network with the YES feed.
It doesn’t matter if the Sox won because they still can’t beat the Yankees and Rays. They are a non factor at this point. Though I do like seeing them lose.
Now you remember why we traded Coke.
good job curtis
not bad, good ab
GREAT AT BAT FROM GRANDY, way to go
Good at bat Curtis, good job.
Two out hit for the Cerv, come on Gazoo.
Tie! Grandy didn’t do too bad, and it brought Garza’s pitch count up.
I don’t think I’ve ever had it but I believe it’s supposed to be the best of Kentucky.
I follow the line from Swingers…”any Glen.. will do.” I dislike Johnnie Walker
wow no blooper to go to the gap for a bases clearing double. The sox got 2 bloop doubles that went all the way to the left center field wall in the 9th and just missed a wall ball pop up double with a great catch from Kelly.
Man, Tino sounds as if he is hopped up on Red Bull.
just hangs up there. no balls to the gaps. if that’s in the gap, it’s a double. but no such good luck for us. we have to earn our victories.
Someone should tell Coke to stop pointing up when it clearly isn’t a pop up.
so sick of seeing Cervelli and Pena ABs , it’s almost automatic outs.
Kerry Wood will wear No. 35 when he arrives.
My favorite malts come from Islay.
http://www.islaywhiskysociety.com/map.htm
“Someone should tell Coke to stop pointing up when it clearly isn?t a pop up.”
But that’s his signature move.
I always feel bad for the hometown crowd of a road game for us; they have to be embarrassed on how many people at game are Yanks fans
I dislike Johnnie Walker
_______
Agreed. And most Glen’s will do.
Montero with a line drive double off of the right center field wall.
Brackman is perfect through 3 innings, 1 strikeout
Jeremy-
Lol I was just talking with my dad about Coke’s pointing up last night. It used to crack me up when he let up a 500 foot bomb that he would point up and the outfielder wouldn’t even move.
Obviously, this is not a must-win game. But does this count as a big game?
Balfour injured wrestling with the pitching coach!
Ranks up there with punching a wall in stupidity factor.
What a surprise. The first inning and the usual pissers and moaners are whining. Typical.
Kay argues, using BA and HR data, that Swisher does better in the 2-hole as opposed to the 6-hole due to the the difference in the quality of the protection at each position.
Sounds good but the data doesn’t back it up.
2-hole – 226 PA, .909 OPS
6-hole – 93 PA, .771 OPS
7or 8-hole – 66 PA, .938 OPS
Or, do the 8th and 9th spots provide better protection than the 7th?
pat-
Balfour’s might be even more dumb lol. Punching a wall is obviously stupid but at least it’s usually because people are just so frustrated that they momentarily lose their temper and snap. It’s performance related. Wrestling your pitching coach in the middle of a pennant chase and hurting yourself… well I don’t even know lol
did not see it but no suprise phil coke blew it in the 9th. he should not seee any inning later then the 7th.. another guy who would wet the bed when it counts.
sux steal another one……
Great job Javy! Keep it going…
Just got back. Looks like Javy has settled down since that rough start. He looks like a totally different pitcher on the mound from April. His stuff might still not be as crisp as in the past but he looks confident and his approach has been great. He could be a great asset in September and October giving the Yanks a legit 4th starter.
Tyler
lol ! I know ! The guy points up at anything hit in the air.
Just read that Balfour story. HA! Maddon says “it was a flukey thing.” How about, it was a really stupid thing as well?
higlander 59 michael kay uses stats only when they support his predisposition.
to go thru all the effort you go thru to figure things out would take to much time from king kay.
michael kay assumes so much, he forgets guys get old, he makes decisions on small sample sizes he is like most fans in some way.
“so sick of seeing Cervelli and Pena ABs , it’s almost automatic outs.”
IMO opinion they both have had some big hits. Especially if you consider thier roles (or what should be thier roles) on this team. I will say Cervelli complaining about balls and strikes while he’s batting, has gotten on my nerves..
fault of jimmy boy leyland yet again. left in perry for too long to give up the Sox’s 7th leadoff base hit of the day. And then went to Coke. Do they have nobody better than Coke. No Zumaya, no Valverde for today. So that means that Coke is in their top 3 or 4 relievers. Yikes.
I would like to see swish, berkman and gardner batting in order. That’s at least 15 pitches the first time through.
Bad strike 3 call on Gardner
did gardner go around on that?
Smoak just sent to Triple AAA.
joba… lol
With all this talk of Scotch, I’m just going to have to kick back with a nice Glenlivet XXV.
Valverde probably won’t be available tomorrow either lol. That was a crazy inning last night. He threw almost 60 pitches! And at typical Jose Valverde pace. It was painful
Park will probably end up back with PHI.
Who is going to wear a Puma costume for Berkman’s first home game? I vote Betsy….
alright Jack Z! You’re a genius! Smook (misspelling intentional) to AAA! HAHA That loser will never make it in the bigs!
i h@te 2 and 0 pops up, just give away at bats
Lance Berkman.
LOL.
IMO opinion they both have had some big hits. Especially if you consider thier roles (or what should be thier roles) on this team. I will say Cervelli complaining about balls and strikes while he’s batting, has gotten on my nerves..
——————————————————-
Cervelli had some really ‘big’ hits April, May? in July , his OPS is about 530. Pena, wel, Pena is not much of a hitter, i think it’s a case of mirage with Pena, when he actually come through with an RBI one of ten opportunities, you are actually surprise he did , hence leaving more of indelible impressions.
anywho, those two are overexposed due to Posada’s inability to catch 2 days in a row and rest that are needed to Arod and others in the infield.
Berkman just looks like a hitter. Took 2 tough pitches for balls. It was a good pitch by Garza on 2-0 and Berkman just couldn’t get on top of it. The guy is a professional hitter though. You could have no idea who Lance Berkman was and just look at him and know he can hit.
Berkman looks like he’s golfing at the plate.
Note to Gardner…if you dive make sure you can actually catch it.
yanks are playing bad baseball.
can’t dive for that ball.
can’t afforded that.
Good effort by Gardner.
Close. Just wish he could have knocked it down but you gotta appreciate the effort of Gardner.
Berkman , even couple years ago is considered one the top 5 hitter in NL, he still got something left.
i hope Kearns doesn’t make Gardner lose playing time because Gardner is awesome and he earned his everyday starting spot this year. Give Granderson the days off…
California,
Your act is so old. Trolling this board as ER and California with same drivel for two years.
So boring.
rays are annoying
enoguh trade talk how about trying to win a game.
letting a scrub jaso kill them 2 nights in a row…
kay is a idiot… he decided berkman is the 2 hitter and kerry wood is the set up guy. i am not sold on wood at all, he wets the bed when it matters……….
Man I hate watching us play this team.
Turned a single into a triple.
I would just focus on Longoria personally. Don’t totally ignore Crawford but unless he steals 2nd and 3rd, if you can get Longoria and then Pena he won’t come all the way around. My personal take…
California,

lucky the clown mariner gm thought smoak had more up side then montero.!!!!!!!!!!!he will regret that move for only about the rest of his life.
newsflash even if montero cannot catch you figure seatlle would have heard of a guy names edgar martinez!!!!!!!!!!!!
if montero turns into edgar we will be ecstatic…….
Turned a single into a triple.”
No a double into a triple. With his speed Jaso more than likely scores on Crawford’s hit.
Turned a single into a triple.

No other LFer other than Crawford gets near that ball, that was a sure double.
Hey CHAD,
You forgot about Kerry Wood. Also a first round pick.
10/25 roster spots, a nice 40% first rounders… not bad.
Tyler, what’s up with puma?
i know this trivia question thanks to the blog. wilson alvarez.
Garza looks like he is auditioning Ben Hur 2 with da stache.
betsy-
one of berkman’s nicknames is the big puma. there were 4-5 guys in houston who used to dress up as pumas and stand in the left field bleachers and hold a sign that said little pumas….. i want you to carry on the tradition.
“I just can’t stand their cowbell toting bandwagon fans”
I was thinking last night: how many of those “Rays” fans in the seats were Yankee fans before the Rays started winning?
600???
Big Puma? LOL – no problem; there’s a store near me that sells puma outfits. I’ll be She-Puma
pulling the outside pitch. that was a great pich to take the other way away from the shift…
at least during this homerun wait…A-rod’s been getting on base, hits and RBI
well, at least we are working at Garza’s pitch count.
A-Rod will get it in his 100th at bat.
how are the yanks doing this year against stud pitching???do they pile on against the dregs only?
anyone have any stats?
thanks
cano is amazing
Looks like illegal beard hair on Garza.
It’s a little late, but that’s a bad job by Javy giving the lead back after we tied it up. He’s done a fine job since about early May, but I honestly don’t have any confidence in him against good teams.
Rob-
i went to yankees spring training in like ’06 when i had a baseball tournament in tampa and there were like 4 rays fans there at legends field. i had the pleasure of sitting next to the main cowbell guy who has fake gold teeth and a blue wig. needless to say it wasn’t a pleasant experience.
drive cano home!

I hear you…
betsy-
javy didn’t pitch that bad that inning. gardner diving, while it being a great hustle play and i like him doing it, and completely missing it probably cost him that run. jaso probably doesn’t score on Crawford’s basehit and then Longoria hits into a DP.
Tino’s nasal tone is like hear chalk scratching across the blackboard…muted…on with the incomparable John Sterling and Suzyn girl.
Betsy,
Wouldn’t it probably make sense to reserve judgment on his performance today until we see Javy’s final line?
He has only given up 2 runs.
“swish has not looked good tonight on the breaking ball”
I agree, but he has been all over the FB. A mistake by Garza on the FB and Swish will put it through the roof.
LGY,
very well put
if we can’t score off Garza, yanks’ strategy ought to be work the count and get that guy out in 6th inning.
Swisher, in his first AB, earned the honor of being the only guy Garza has struck out all season after falling behind 3-0.
Once Alex gets the weight of No. 600 off his back he’ll go on an RBI tear. His swing will become more relaxed.
No matter if we score or not that should be every game objective cash
Javy hasn’t been terrible, he already exceed my expectation in pitching to the fifth.
a good fast inning by Javy. Lets see some spunk by the bottom of the order though..

Brackman through 5 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts
maybe not……
Have to love Phil Coke. Bases clearing double to a LH hitter. And then to top it off pointing to the sky on a double in the gap.
Tino sounds like a muppet
I live in Tampa. Therefore I have to listen to the Rays announcers, who are the absolute worst. There is not a close pitch going against the Rays that is not subject to debate. I am seriously considering moving to another state, just to get away from these clowns. Appreciate allowing me to vent.
Tyler, that’s his strength. They have to play him straight up everywhere.
Cash,
yup
sometimes the Yankees hitting…our lack thereof annoys me. So far Robbie the only one looking solid tonight…

Any chance the Yanks call Brackman up to do a little work in the ‘pen come September or do they just leave it alone and start him in AAA in April with the goal being him reaching the Bronx sometime in 2011 depending on performance?

You ever watch the Marlins TV announcers? I think they are a lot better than the Rays crew(minus Todd Kalas)
great. now we have to count on sabathia to avoid the sweep. and he’s coming off 2 so-so starts.
I see another horrible performance by the offense. I hope they wake up but its not likely with Tampa’s good bullpen.
Isn’t Jaso crowding to much the homeplate??
Nobody loves you when you’re down and out
I guess the last four innings don’t count for you, Rope?

Swish took too long to throw to 2nd base. The runner never should of got to 2nd base on that.

with the cream puffs Girardi’s got at the end of the lineup (Cervelli, Granderson) and the Rays pitching?
So long, sole possession of first place.
This is pretty much disgusting. Outside of his last start, Garza has been abysmal all year, and we have TWO %*@&ing hits off of him. There’s no excuse for the vaunted Yankee lineup to look this bad. Vazquez deserves better than this. I don’t understand why they flatout refuse to score runs when he pitches.
Swisher not having a good game – no way that should have been a double
wonder if the Yankees have a chance on getting Rafael Soriano after the season?
in Javy’s defense the Yankees coincidentally rarely give him the run support they give the other 4 starters
there is plenty of game left guys
Another pathetic showing by the offense. Hope they wake up but that’s unlikely, the Ray’s actually have a bullpen. Frustrating night again.

his ERA is 3.97 , how abysmal can he be?
I’d seriously doubt it, Tyler. The only way I could see the Yanks experimenting this year is if the Yanks pull out in front by a good amount of games late.
so far 2 games of bad baseball. swisher missed the first play of the game and hesitated on that throw. jaso is killing them…
when the yanks do not hit agaisnt good pitching they look old and slow.
gardner is not looking good tonight. he watched 2 perfect pitches for strike 3. not a good game and a half os far……
rays, pitching, d, and speed are killing us…Kay is not smart enough to understand yes the yanks offense is better then the rays but not significantly and that is a head scratcher because of the stats. but the rays steal a ton of bases and get a ton of doubles and triples………..speed can help clown………
the cardinals won the world series with a bunch of single hitters…….

captain time/ captain ground out time?
told u so!
How pathetic is it that the only two Devil Rays fans in existance decide to troll sports boards during the game?
Have a little faith…
what da ya know!!!?? go jete
Come on Berkman!!!
omg, weak flyout
the washed up Berkman with the foul out.
LOL PUMA time!
Very bad offensive showing against the team they need to win the most against. Looking forward to seeing Berkman and Wood give the team a needed lift, hopefully
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tex strikes back!
Berkman is fitting right in.
Tex !
Tex message!
tex message
TEX!!! Crushes it!!
TEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
way to pick up berkman WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Tex MsgED!
yeah Tex! just win one of these games and get out this stupid state in first place.
Yay!
Tex picks up Berkman… Go Tex!!!
Troll on that one, punks
TEX MESSAGE
well that is a nice change of pace…about time!!
Here it comes….
THANK YOU TEX!.. Arod follow!
really hope A-Rod gets this stupid HR out of the way soon, tainted or not. just get it over with.
But I thought the game was over? That is what I read here so it must be true.
k for a-rod
Berkman is going to be a bust. No bat speed. His salad days are over.
told u
…or not..
Anybody have an extra clutch hit they can lend A-Rod?
c’mon cano send another one to the bleachers
really hope that Kearns, Berkman, and Wood turn out better than Grandy, Park, and NJ.
A-Rod had to expand the zone because of that joke strike 2 call.
what is the yanks and the rays BA with RISP????
Anyone.
arod lunged at that ball. jeez get this over already. Texiera swings early in the count a lot…
Registration hasn’t scared the trolls away tonight.
How about giving Berkman more than 3 at bats with his new team, in a new league before writing him off? Lot of clowns on here tonight as usual
they are walking him
Crazy thinking. Maybe A-Rod should get tomorrow off.
Arod hovering around near the .260 avg now
Garza at 92 pitches…the pens will decide this game.
given Cashman’s track record this year – real skeptical of the NL scrubs he’s imported today.
Arod needs a day off. His at bats are getting worse and worse. Jumping out of his shoes to hit a homerun.
2AB’s and someone is washed up. Unreal.
Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go thru life.
in the .260′s
I’d rather see Alex get his HR at the Stadium. Meanwhile he can be a good contributor for a win tonight and tomorrow.
why would anyone count a game as lost that is 3-1 in the sixth. It is beyond me, unless they really take pleasure in the “I told you so”. It is beyond me why someone would take that pessimistic a view on their team???????
NH-
I guess 85 RBI are meaningless, huh?
3 and 2 was a nasty pitch, cano swung at 4 ball oh well
Frozen Rope,
No, not Matt. But “lol”, nice try. Please, tell me another one.
Cashmoney,
You know, for some reason, I thought his ERA over the season was a lot higher until the last few weeks. But I looked, and you’re right, I’m wrong. He was just had a handful of REALLY bad starts peppered in to a few solid ones, and I thought that suckery was over a much longer period than it was. I retract my previous statement about him being abysmal.

let’s see if Javy can hold them down this inning, that’s i am asking.
in fairness to lance his first at bat was good last 2 , not so good, but tex picked him up
These are the two best teams in the MLB. Anybody who thinks these games will be a walkover hasn’t watched much baseball.

Yes, but this is the lowest i’ve seen him this late in the year.. He’s usually good for at least .290.
Yeah I said it before and I will say it again. I could see a Yankees- Rays ALCS this year.
The Yankees and the Rays are the best in baseball.
Who cares aboutbhis average if he drives in runs at this pace? Or HR for that matter?

300 or just under used to be a given for AROD
that is javy for a career 5 games over 500, all that talent(3 or 4 pitches).. he also gives up a ton of homers.
he is a guy that i think wets the bed, i will be glad when he is not in the rotation next year….

.254 to be exact, but I can’t count that considering he was coming back from hip surgery. He also finished at a .286 clip

Benoit was on the scrap heap before this year. They have had great results this year but I hardly think that they are automatic. the Yanks just have to stay patient and things iwll take care of themselves.
The ball Swish hit against Benoit still hasn’t landed.
The non-Cliff Lee trade looks worse and worse
And Smoak goes to the minors….
Javy is doing exactly what they got him for…eating innings, generally pitching well enough to keep his team in the game, winning a fair share. If he had Hughes’ run support, his record would be much better.
“34 years old and still comes up small in big situations….”
—————————–
I guess it was a small situation the past few months when he has been one of the team’s bests pitchers while AJ was abysmal and Hughes was mediocre.
The things said about Javy from Yankee fans are just so far gone from reality it is hard to believe sometimes.
Get over 2004. There is a long list of people more responsible for that collapse than Javy.
Going to be tough to come back
No Phil Cokes or Rocky Perry in their bullpen…
Man drives in 31 runs in one month and all you can say is (and I paraphrase) “yeah but he’s not hitting 300″ That is a comment that is shows someone searching for something negative to say. Some people can’t accept success.
That’s much better!

2 nights in a row for SWISH
Grandy and Grounder. ugg. The two are interchangeable this game.
Get over 2004. There is a long list of people more responsible for that collapse than Javy.
———————-
It’s comical people blame him for that. He came in with the bases loaded no outs. Yes Mussina got out of that in 2003 but what are the odds facing the top of a red hot Sox order. Torre got completely outmanaged by Francona that series. In my opinion that was the biggest factor along with guys like Arod going completely cold and the Sox catching fire as an entire unit.
The Sox were the better team in 2004. Look at the rotations. It’s actually amazing the Yanks even won 3 games that series. That’s what amazes me most looking at pitching matcups.. The Yanks threw Mussina, Lieber, Brown, and El Duque. Give me a break. Plus, Javy was hurt
Please bring in Qualls.
Can’t really blame Vazquez. He’s pitched well tonight, thrown some big games this year, standing nose to nose with King Felix. He just gives up HRs – that’s always been the book on him.
and wow cervelli needs to shut his trap.
How many homeruns have been hit by the Yankees since Alex’s 599th?
Tyler,
Also, Damon has crushed Javy in his career. The decision to bring him in that spot was just so stupid.
Torre set Javy up to fail.
Joba threw 2 innings yesterday hopefully he doesn’t have crap tonight.
Granderson is wearing and Cervelli peaked in May
Cervelli really needs to shut his trap and just swing the bat.
Way to go Swish…Berkman will still be the hero tonight.

lol I was thinking the same thing….seems like everyone has gone yard but him(cervelli/gardner also probably)
Grandy will be platooning a lot more with Kearns here now.
stuart a – Yanks are 6-6 in games started by AL pitchers with the 10 lowest ERA’s as of this morning. They scored an average of 5 runs a game in those starts.
The Rays gave Garza 3 leads and he blew all 3 of them.
Clearly he cannot be trusted in a big game and there is no way the Rays can hand him the ball in the playoffs.
well i think that in all fairness to Cervelli he got in a grove playing every single day when Posada was hurt. He has to get used to catching every 3 or 4 days instead of everyday. Same as Posada when he was just DHing
Cervelli is getting really frustrated because he can’t hit anymore and is striking out a lot. He is really overmatched the last couple of months.
Good game.
Too bad we will lose it.
These Rays are just relentless.
javy is back? mmm…..
it’s sad to see cisco is an automatic out right now
Javy better be on a short rope here.
surprised that he put Javy back out there. Will be nice if he gets through the 8th then Robinson and Mo can go…
I said before that Torre was more to blame for the ALCS failure than Javy. He should have been fired after that series. Also the lineup failed when they had so many chances to win the series.
LGY
Was that a joke?
You may be right, but don’t forget he pitched Game 7 2008 ALCS against the Red Sox!
Garza threw lotsa pitches for his no-no and is over 100 now. Burn him out and take our chances with the Rays pen. They can’t be lights out every game.

What do you mean “we” ? You love the Red Sox.
Cisco kid brings energy to the club and did a good job last year and early part of this year. But he is overexposed and never was much of a hitter in the minor. that’s that.
come on Javy, can’t walk their 9th place hitter.
Why should Cervelli be tired?
He just needs to stop arguing balls and strikes.

You have to wonder if either of these will happen this season:
Berkman gets his first hit as a Yankee and A-Rod hits another homerun.

Cervelli is a backup and being way over exposed.. This is who he really is. That’s what makes Montero’s bat so special.. If he could only get better defensively.

he already is a saviour by the fact that his acquisition got the useless Chan Ho Park off the team.
Bring back Garza we have a few more Hrs waiting for him…
Melky Mesa is having another really good night. 2-3 with a double (18) a homer (14)), 3 RBI (55), a walk and a stolen base (28). now hitting .261. The main thing is that he’s cut down on the strikeouts, though they are still too high. He’s also walking more.

yes, he was real good in spring training too, just couldn’t throw strikes his first time up which apparently has been the book on him. Yanks also have Royce Ring, also had a good spring and a solid season in AAA.
I hope that Girardi changes the lineup back to Swish batting 2nd. Swish is hitting much better than Berkman right now and there was no reason to change what has been working all season. Berkman should bat 6th or 7th and ease him into the lineup and if he starts hitting like crazy you can move him up. I think Girardi got too excited with a new toy.

mmm… if we can replace Robertson with Benoit… we be pretty much lights out.
Berkman is a quality individual and its hard to criticize him. Unfortunately, though, his career has hit the wall. Its the same as Jeter, Posada and, pretty soon, Arod.
fingers crossed for Robinson to be solid in this big spot
Tomorrows lineup should be:
Jeter
Swish
Tex
Arod
Cano
Berkman
Posada
Granderson
Gardner
How stupid is Harold Reynolds who suggested this lineup
Jeter
Granderson
Tex
Arod
Berkman
Posada
Cano
Swisher
Gardner
Anyone could of had Benoit. He is coming off of arm surgery and the Rays took a chance. I always liked his stuff when he was with Texas.
Give Berkman some time. He’s been on the same team his entire career and actually in the same state his entire life. Of course, there is going to an adjustment. People blaming Berkman are morons. It will take him a few games to adjust to the league, he’s never DH’d regularly before obviously so that’s an adjustment. Fitting into the clubhouse role. It will take time. But I firmly believe he’s going to be a key piece of the Yanks winning it all. He’s a professional hitter. .958 OPS career. Great hitter.

One down.
Sounds like YS
…cue PC Richards jingle….
does mariano throw the rising fastball anymore? i remember that was his pitch.
Hard to believe the contempt so many Yankee fans held Cano in only the year before last. So many yankee fans literally hated the guy and couldn’t get rid of him fast enough.
Now he’s arguably one of the 5 best players in baseball.
I can’t believe people are getting on Berkman for having a rough game………wait, yes I can believe it.
“Thanks GB i sure apreciqate it”
You infected him already.
Two down.

GB7-
Always heard Oliva was terrific up at the plate handling the lumber.
Never saw him play. But it’s tough to imagine another player with a swing that perfect.
Cano is unreal. He’s hitting like a MVP caliber corner outfielder and he plays 2b. What a weapon.
———————————————————————————————————————-
Dr. Joe from Long Island and Pat M., remember him. I’ll try to find a video clip on Oliva and put it on here. Incredible swing. His knees were almost as bad as Mantle’s. It killed his career. When he came up, he could do everything.
Mariano is such a great talent. We are going to truly miss him when he calls it a career.
ahhh bloop hit
Another broken bat bloop…
guess Robbie can’t do everything
Cano just missed that.
Damn, I thought Cano had that
Great win. These last two games have been a bit too postseason-esque for my liking, but better get used to it.
Mo!!!!
daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Yankeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee’s Wynnnnnnnnnn!
Bad loss, followed by great win!
YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
solid, solid win. Great job for the Yanks not giving up
maddon should left benoit in
We come home in first place

That’s the penalty that he has to pay. LMAO
What a great game!
YES!
Ray’s can’t take first now from this series.
Mo’s done it again!
I like that “california” guy. he really knows his baseball and is suuuch a great fan
Mo! nuff said.
Great job Mo!!! It was nice of him to make his weekly appearance. lol
congrats! hard fought game!
Wow, how 24 hrs can really change perspective in a season. Great win.. Great job Cano!
Last night was not a bad loss. Unfortunate, yes, but, not bad.
“I was lucky”
I love Cano. Gritty, gutty win tonight, folks.
Nice win. Last time CC pitched in Tampa he took a no no into the 8th. More of the same on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was BIG!!
Go Yankees
Cano has to talk to Alex.
Robbie has been doing so well this year. I wonder if Melky leaving has cut down on some party time for Robbie.
Rope-
How’s that prediction looking now?
Great win!!!!! Tomorrow we have a full nine hitters…Go Yanks!!!
there never will be another MO… great game , glad we won.
Oh, I definitely remember Tony Oliva. He was such a great hitter. He really was. Such a natural, beautiful swing. I hadn’t thought of him in a long time, but, yes, Robbie is similar in that regard. He was one of the first great hitters I can remember. That whole Minnesota team was a lumber company – Harmon Killebrew, Bobby Allison….
Jim Kaat broke in with them. Just a great, all-around team.
GREAT win – one of the best of the year given that we were possibly going to lose 2 straight to the Rays.
I guess the game wasn’t over in the fourth inning after all.
These are the two best teams in baseball.
The games are going to be tight.
If you can’t deal with it, find another hobby.
This is great baseball. It’s a shame some of you are incapable of enjoying it.
Cano just waved to both of the Rays fans at the game….

Absolutely right! when you play good teams you can’t expect to win every game. They bounced back well tonight against very good pitching.
The percentage of base hits off Mo that are fluky broken bat flares is remarkable. It’s literally sheer luck getting a hit off the guy.
But Mo is the greatest. Hasn’t worked too much recently. No problem. Overpowers the Rays.
The Yanks only needed to win 1 game this series. That’s it.
And they won the game that Javy Vazquez pitched. Games like tonight are why they traded for Javy. He came up with a very solid start and the power bats did the rest.
Pitching and power hitting. That’s been the basis for 27 world championships and this team has both of those ingredients.

Alex must lead the league in popups
—————————————————————–
Don’t know about OF pop ups, but he has 26th highest IF pop up rate (10.5%) among the 82 AL qualifiers. Tex is slightly worse (22nd; 11.1%).
CB,
Do you remember when everyone was screaming for Cashman to trade Cano for Kemp? Yeah that would of been great watching Kemp dog it every game.
if not for josh hamilton robbie the mvp, det won’t be in the race
NEW POST========>>>>>>>>>>>>
Perhaps some of you should have more confidence in the team with the best record in baseball?
Just a thought.
I am sure Long will get to work quickly with Berkman and his swing. Try to get him going….
I loved seeing the shattered bat, even though it lead to a hit.
CR9 July 31st, 2010 at 9:58 pm
This team leads the league in popups. Berkman welcomed himself nicely tonight with a few impotent popups!
———————————————————
Perhaps they have an inordinate amount of OF popus – I don’t know – but I do know that they actually have the second lowest IF popup rate in the league.
Derek Jeter has the lowest IF popup rate in the AL; he is always one of the best in this category.
we are so spoiled to have mo. simply the best

That ’60s Twins teams could mash with any team in history. add Don Mincher, Jimmy Hall in center field, Zoilo Versalles, Bernie Allen, Oliva, Earl Battey and then Carew.

Hopefully those same whiny fans will give learn some patience from the Cano example and think twice before calling for the Yankees to trade Joba…especially when he’s pitched so much better than most fans seem to appreciate.

I think Gardner is every bit as fast, if not faster than Crawford, yet Gardner uses his speed far too sparingly. Few infield hits, too few stolen bases.”
Gardner has more infield hits than Crawford outright and steals more than him (on a per at bat basis):
Gardner has 20 infield hits, with 30 stolen bases in 36 attempts (87% success rate) in 369 plate appearances (1 sb every 12 plate appearances)
Crawford has 18 infield hits 37 stolen bases in 46 attempts (80% success rate) in 421 plate apperances (1 sb every 11.4 appearances)
Basically, Gardner has more infield hits that Crawford (20 vs. 18, in fewer # of plate appearances), runs as about as frequently as Crawford (per plate appearance) and is more successful than Crawford when he runs (87% success vs. 80% success).
