So far, a quiet morning
Still nothing official from the Yankees regarding the Lance Berkman trade, but Mark Melancon says it’s his understanding that he’s now with the Astros.
There are roughly five hours to go until the trade deadline, and the morning has been fairly quiet except for a few mentions here and there that the Yankees are out on guys like Octavio Dotel and Ted Lilly.
If last night’s Austin Kearns trade taught us anything it’s this: The players the Yankees have been linked to don’t always matter. Brian Cashman brought up Kearns name to Joe Girardi early on Friday and had the deal done with in a few hours.

I wonder how much waiting has to do with concealing team plans until the last minute in order to reduce the time rival teams require to plan out well orchestrated retaliation moves.
yea, stupid 24 hr deadline, after he approved the deal. makes no sense

Aw, rats. My bad. I was looking in the wrong spot. I took a double take when I saw that too because I didn’t think he had been out that long.
Oh well, it appears Aceves will be moved to the 60-day DL then. That would be my guess.
Tonight is big. Lets see if Javy gets run support.
Joelsherman1 #Yankees view Kearns as ML avg defender. Not great, but worlds better than Thames, whose roster spot could be in peril
I’m sure Cash will get something done today and it will come completely out of the blue…….
“I took a double take when I saw that too because I didn’t think he had been out that long.”
—————————-
Maybe you should have taken a triple take
Joelsherman1 #Yankees thought Low-A prospect Paredes included in Berkman deal might never get defense in infield and have to be shifted to OF
Poor Thames.
Thames can’t even catch a ball without making it an adventure………he’s worth having on the team and he’s a good guy, but he’s no OF
Oh no Cashman got fleeced again.
Paredes and Melancon for Berkman!
The CBA requires 24 hours from the time the trade is submitted to the Commissioner’s office to decline or accept. He has the full 24 hours to change his mind. That’s what the mlbpa bargained into the CBA. That should make it official around 4:00 PM EST
Thames makes Damon look like carl crawford.
it seems that guys coming off no hitters/perfect games struggle in their next outings…hopefully the case w/ Garza

Good morning –
I woke up this AM and saw the news. I would think Marcus Thames’ roster spot is now in jeopardy. I wonder if he gets cut, or is part of another deal. Seems like a good quality person, too bad to see him go.
I also think that Berkman makes Juan Miranda an unneeded part. Again, the question becomes does he get traded, sent down and maybe taken off the 40-man, or DFA’d.
And the last question – is Cash done dealing? Is something in the works for a relief pitcher?
Doreen-
Let me be among the chorus of voices in wishing you a great trip.
People need to stop worrying about Kearn’s defense. The same ones that are complaining are the same ones that thought Hinske and Nady were just fine in last year’s outfield.
whitesox tried to trade for manny
Thames is a good stick to have. I wish him well if he indeed is the one to be cut.
I thought Kearns was a CF. How bad can his defense be if he plays CF?
Joe- I don’t think Cash is done dealing. The relief market is a bit tricky right now though.
Is anyone else worried that the Red Sox have been uncharacteristically quiet thus far?
Nope i’m not worried. They have catching up to do.

No, just you and the other Red Sox whiners.
Couldn’t care less what the Red Sox do or don’t do.

kate, that’s what I was saying to a friend last night! I certainly hope that’s the case tonight.

.The Cardinals’ rotation with Jake Westbrook is nothing less than exceptional; he’s a perfect fit as a No. 4 starter.#trades

They do have a terrific rotation…
Berkman is probably going to play tonight. Good news.
LGY – I hope you’re kidding. Granted, Berkman is not near as good as he once was, but those two guys weren’t going to help the Yankees. As much as I wanted Melancon to succeed, it wasn’t happening. In fact, he seemed to be regressing this year. Whether it’s because of his herky-jerky delivery, or what, it just wasn’t happening even at AAA. Disappointing, but in two years, he just didn’t seem to progress.
I’ll be on the road, driving home, so if you want to respond I won’t be seeing it for an hour or so.
Later.
CR9,
Nope.
The RedSox have virtually no trade chips and definitely not enough to land a player that we ourselves can’t add with our own superior prospects.
They have too much ground to make up and not enough ammunition to fill all their holes.
I would be scared of the Cardinals if they made it to the world series vs the Yankees.
Interesting situation with the cardinals. Looking at a possible trade of Ryan Ludwick to San Diego. Maybe they flip the players and others to Washington for Adam Dunn.
KenDavidoff Exec who knows #Nationals well insists, “They won’t mind taking the picks (on Dunn). Unless they get blown away, no trade.”
Putting Dunn in that lineup with Pujols and Holliday.. Yikes!
I just want to make it to the WS……………and we’ll see about the Cards; they did nothing in the playoffs last year.
“I thought Kearns was a CF. How bad can his defense be if he plays CF?”
He’s a corner outfield. Right around average. Much better than Thames.
I hear ya Betsy.
Where would Dunn play the field in St. Louis?

There are no rumors on this oother than the Ludwick to San Diego but it makes sense.
Joe,
I was very much kidding. I could not care less about losing Paredes and Melancon.
Thanks, everyone.
I am taking my time packing. My least favorite part of a vacation.
well, everyone else’s lack of worry has put my mind at ease.
If they traded Ludwick then presumably the of. But someone just speculated this. Doubt it happens.
Dunn would play RF I’m assuming in St. Louis….he’s goin to the Braves though.
Dunn would play RF I would guess in St. Louis…..
Dunn doesn’t really fit their OF, does he?
They have Holliday, Rasmus and Shumaker right?
I’m glad the Yankees got Berkman and not Dunn. Dunn may be better offensively at the moment, but would have cost alot more.
Schumaker mostly plays the infield.
Too bad we missed out on Peralta he would have been a nice upgrade over El Nino, at least with the stick.
He hit 2 homers in his debut after being traded.
Yeah Peralta really is bad on d though. Well he was at shortstop. Not sure about 3b.
Ok plus Schumaker stinks this year.
I still don’t see Dunn playing RF.
I thought he plays LF.
Quite a shame if we couldn’t beat the Rays even though Niemann and Price are not pitching.
“They have Holliday, Rasmus and Shumaker right?”
Pretty sure they’d find room on their bench………..for Schumaker.
Yankees will beat the rays tonight.
Sweet, winning the division is going to be tough in and of itself, so that’s why I’m not even thinking about NL teams.
Dunn as an OF’er is a joke. He stinks out there. Footspeed of a Gaint Sloth.
early GTLU excretion:
Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Tex 1B
Arod 3B
Cano 2B
Posada C
Berkman DH
Granderson CF
Gardner LF
Now THAT’S a mo-fo’in lineup.
Brett,
He doesn’t play anywhere well in the outfield but they have a pretty descent 1B and Holliday plays LF so RF is the only spot for him if they hypothetically made a deal….trading Ludwick is rather curious if they don’t have something else lined up.
Ludwick wasn’t exactly Dave winfield in the outfield. That’s a ground ball pitching staff and they aren’t exactly a team of Gold Glovers anyway. Not only that, but, they are a right handed heavy hitting tean. 2 left handed bats in the starting 8 and one of those is skip shumaker.
Betsy, that is true. The al east is just brutal to play in. Hopefully the Yanks come out of this weekend still in first place.
What’s the skinny with Chamberlain ? (being factious)
Is he back in favor after 2 scoreless innings ?
Apparently he made an adjustment with his foot on the rubber resulting in finishing his pitches better and better consistency with his landing foot.
Joba needs to show more. But last night was a good step.
Get me Theriot and Leo Nunez and we’re done.
I know. Isn’t gonna happen. I can dream can’t I ?
Shumaker shifted to 2nd base last year. Randy Winn has been playing in the outfield. The other option is giving the full time job to Jon Jay, a rookie.
Love to have Nunez. Teams are asking for the moon for these relievers.
“Is he back in favor after 2 scoreless innings ?”
Wouldn’t assume anything off of one appearance. He’s flashed similar brilliance at times this season. Kind of a Burnett among relief pitchers this year. Some brilliance mixed with some not so brilliant. Consistently inconsistent.
Joba pitched great yesterday. 2 clean innings right? Even though we were losing it was still a key spot. Holding a game late with just a one run difference.
Florida supposedly isn’t selling now. Apparently they too are seeking bullpen help.
Love to have Nunez. Teams are asking for the moon for these relievers

Sometimes ya’ gotta’ bite the bullet and give up something in order to get something. This might be one of those times.
Regarding the Westbrook trade: 10:53am: A third team might be involved in the deal, reports MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince.
Sweet-
And the Sun, and the Stars. Oh well.
“Even though we were losing it was still a key spot. Holding a game late with just a one run difference.”
That was big. He put forth a great effort yesterday.
Looks like Ludwick could be part of a 3 teamer involving Westbrook, the Pads and prospects.
That can build Joba’s confidence as well.
Can I least have an offensive upgrade to Pena ?
Why aren’t the Yankees trying to get Andy Marte to bolster the bullpen haha?
Sherman says Rays inquired about Manny but it went nowhere.
Cash.
Give me a reliever from out of the blue.
Someone nobody is thinking of.
I know you are operating in full stealth mode now.
Surprise us.
San Diego with a good deadline.
Haven’t followed the Pads.
What did they do?
Sherman says Pads fell out of 3 way talks.
I live in St. Louis. I honestly would not be overly scared of the Cards in the World Series….
Well they didn’t do anything spectacular, but if they do get ludwick a couple of nice bats they added.
Guess not though.
Heyman reports Manny to ChiSox possibility.
3 hours and 47 minutes to go and everyone can start breathing….or, crying.
Manny back in the al, is that some sort of practical joke?

Can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned.

Good. Let them have the headaches.
That’s hysterical. Manny Ramirez and Ozzie. Whoa ! prepare for WWIII.
What a hoot.
2 lunatics head to head.

The White Sox are a team that doesn’t scare me in the least.
Rosenthal says ChiSox to make one more run at Manny today but Heyman says Dodgers want big prospects in return.
Kenny, the gambler, will he do it?
We’ll see…
Kenny Williams sure is a card.
I’ll give him that.
The whitesox should trade for Zambrano too. Manny, Zambrano and Ozzie in the same clubhouse hahaha
Sherman just corrected himself. Padres still in it for Ludwick. Good for San Diego. They have a beautiful ballpark in a gorgeous downtown area on San Diego Bay. Baseball is alive and well there.
I can’t wait to see the first time Ozzie calls out Manny for dogging it.
Sixty five Phony MRI’s later Ozzie and Williams realize they have made a terrible mistake.
You can’t write funnier material.
I hope they do it just so I can split my gut laughing.
Watch the Rays go get Dunn now

How are you and family doing today, Kate? Hope all is well and the Yanks pull off two wins this weekend and 3 of 4 from Boston.
