There was no Yankee Stadium game last season because the Yankees front office was upset at the writers for taking so many knocks at the new stadium.

Make sure to brush back Pete Abe…

Verducci is a good baseball writer despite that book he wrote with Torre.

  11. blake August 6th, 2010 at 9:56 am

I liked Axisa’s answer on Cano vs Pedroia but I’m not sure its even as close as he makes it out anymore.

Cano has vastly improved his defense over the last couple years and while Pedroia has been the better defender over their careers I’m not sure he is better anymore. Cano can make plays that other 2nd basemen just can’t because of his arm strength and the concentration issues seem to be a thing of the past. Also Cano’s upside as a hitter is much higher than Pedroia’s because of his power and that’s starting to show. Injury risk also has to factor in as well. Last year, I would have said they are even or maybe even give a slight nod toward Pedroia….going forward I think Cano is the better player by a good bit. Right now I think Utley is Cano’s only peer at 2B and that may not even be true pretty soon.

  12. GreenBeret7 August 6th, 2010 at 9:57 am

What good is Matthews to a baseball team? Unless He’s a switch whiner, there is no whine/snark position available when Verducci plays both positions.

  13. Stultus Magnus August 6th, 2010 at 9:57 am

Good, Joel Sherman isn’t in the line-up. He’d kill team spirit with his gloom-and-doom attitude…

Hey, at least Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman aren’t playing. Bill Madden too

Did anyone see the blown call in the Marlins-Phillies game last night that cost the Marlins a walk-off win? I just read about it but didn’t see a replay. Sounds like another terrible call by the third-base umpire.

Lets think how huge that Vasquez trade may turn out to be. Not only has Javy been really solid since the first month, now another guy they got in that trade (Boone Logan) is really emerging as a viable bullpen option. Melky has been awful in Atlanta, Gardner has been great in NY…..not bad…

  18. Tyler August 6th, 2010 at 10:05 am

Wallace 0-4 with 4 K’s. Then we all go to ESPN NY and make fun of him. Break!

  19. Yankee Trader August 6th, 2010 at 10:07 am

    Chad and Sam-

Expecting a lot from you guys today, especially Chad, since you’re in Cano’s usual spot in the lineup!

    JM-
I saw the replay and the discussion. The ball bounced fair some 15 feet in front of the bag, the umpire thought it crossed the bag foul, but he wasn’t in position to see the ball bounce fair some 10 feet behind the bag. Another reason for using an official[not another ump] up in the TV booth to relay the correct call down to the lead umpire.

  20. Carl August 6th, 2010 at 10:07 am

A-Rod will be on with Michael Kay and Francesa today. Can’t wait.

  21. Andrew August 6th, 2010 at 10:08 am

Mike Dunn also keeps walking people in Atlanta’s bullpen, I think his WHIP is around 2 (even if it’s a small sample size). It’s funny they exchanged a power-throwing lefty with horrible control (Dunn) for a power-throwing lefty with better control and are reaping the benefits now, thanks to Logan actually finding the zone consistently.

  23. Nick in SF August 6th, 2010 at 10:11 am

I didn’t read any of this Cano vs Pedroia stuff, but I suspect Cano will lead the Yankees to several championships, while Pedroia will end up with his one solitary ring (which he will probably end up carrying to the heart of Mount Doom and throwing into its fiery cauldron).
    Advantage: Robbie.

  24. Yankee Trader August 6th, 2010 at 10:13 am

    From George King-

What a nasty rumor. He must have meant the Yankees have interest in Carlos “the good” Guillen and not Jose.

Having acquired Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns this past weekend it would appear the Yankees wouldn’t have room for Jose Guillen.

Nevertheless, the Yankees aren’t shutting the door on acquiring the much-traveled 34-year-old outfielder who was designated for assignment yesterday by the Royals. They have 10 days to deal Guillen or release him.

Two weeks ago a Yankees official said there was no interest in Guillen, who told teammates at Yankee Stadium that he was close to becoming a Yankee. Now, the Yankees will track Guillen, who is expected to clear waivers since he is owed roughly $3.9 million for the remainder of this season.

What are you talking about? He’s batting .267 2 points below his career average and any Yankee fan knows that Melky’s worth to a team cannot be judged by his numbers alone. He’s help resuscitate a franchise on life support to a leading contender for the national league pennant.

The Marlins game? Worst call of the year by Bob Davidson.

Not only was the call bad, the replays showed he wasn’t even looking at the ball!

He then stubbornly refused to ask for help and said he got the call “right” after the game.

Horrible job all around by one of the worst umpires in the game.

  36. blake August 6th, 2010 at 10:23 am

Yea that call in the Marlins game was terrible. You can sometimes excuse human error in making the wrong call. What you can’t excuse is if the umpire is in the wrong position or in this case looking in the wrong place. They outlined what happened last night on MLB tonight. The ump gave up on the play before it hit the ground and assumed it was going foul….The human error part is going to happen….but the out of position and “mental mistakes” by the umpires happen far too often these days.

  37. Andrew August 6th, 2010 at 10:24 am

The clip of Bob Davidson is completely cringe-worthy and is just an indictment of a guy who I loathe and dread when he’s assigned to Yankees games. He is like the antithesis of Jim Joyce, who at least seems like a decent guy in-game (not like Davidson who always shows up managers + players who disagree with him on calls and is great for an ejection or more in his games/series), and seems completely incapable of showing some humility/self-criticism when it’s clear he got the call wrong.

Joyce is a great example for other umps when dealing with awful calls, but the key would be to remove the effect their poor decision-making has on games. But then again, Bud Selig is still in charge so replay will stay just a sham for the rest of the season I assume.

  44. CB August 6th, 2010 at 10:31 am

There was some discussion of Bob Ryan’s story today about the yankees. Forget “team check-book.” Here was the best part of the column:

One guy you can’t mess with is second baseman Robinson Cano, who, a late dip notwithstanding (1 for 14 this month), has had an MVP-type season. No one would dare argue the premise that he has been New York’s best player. A switch-hitting second baseman with an impressive .945 OPS who can also flash some fancy leather — what’s not to like?

I would personally go as far as saying that Robinson Cano is the best switch hitter the yankees have had since the Mick.

And that’s why Bob Ryan’s opinion matters – it’s his expertise. Because he’s willing to go that extra mile to do the hard work needed to figure out what everyone else has missed all these years – cano’s switch hitting.

Cano might as well be a switch hitter then way he hits lefties but still a pretty lazy effort by Ryan. The Yanks get credit for a lot of switch hitters it seems…a guy on MLBnetwork the other night thought Montero was one as well.

  54. Jim August 6th, 2010 at 10:58 am

blake did you think Melky was good last year? Most people do not consider him a very good player. I think of him as a very effective role player that has a knack for contributing key plays to winning games that mostly go unnoticed and do not show up in the box score. The player that comes to the plate willing to give himself up to move a runner is more important in a big game against a superior pitcher a lot of times than a superstar hitter.

  55. Doreen August 6th, 2010 at 10:59 am

    GB7 -

I saw you posted last night about the Dodgers’ catcher Martin. We were there Tuesday night and saw the play at the plate. We were sitting near 3 guys (I would say older guys, but I think they were my age or around that), and they and my husband (along with just about everyone within earshot) bemoaned the fact that Martin should have slid into home. At the time it would have just meant he would have scored, but my husband noticed the play ended up awkwardly and was not surprised at all that he was injured. So the bad decision (no slide) cost him a run AND his season, and possibly his career. Wow. That’s a real shame. It’s also amazing that he, has he said “manned up” (eye roll) to catch the rest of the game. Gotta question that decision, too.

  60. I Like Inge August 6th, 2010 at 11:05 am

Ryan’s comment on Jeter’s range was a littly lazy too. His defense has been fine this year. Overall the Yankees play very good defense.

  61. GreenBeret7 August 6th, 2010 at 11:06 am

Doreen, that was as ugly an ending that I’ve seen in years. About as bad as Robin Ventura and Bill Buckner. If Martin plays next year, I’d be shocked. It’s almost certain that it won;t be as a catcher. Talk about bad luck..after trading one of the top young catchers in baseball for a 36 year old journeyman 3rd baseman. Shades of the late 80s Yankees. How about trading Romine for Broxton (before they destroy his arm)?

  62. blake August 6th, 2010 at 11:07 am

    Jim,

I think you just answered your own question. He’s a role player/4th outfielder that’s about to reach arbitration. He’s not been good this year in Atlanta and they would likely love to make a move to be able to play him less.

  63. Bill D August 6th, 2010 at 11:07 am

“it’s not surprising, it is lazy and irrelevant. the season starts on april 1st, not may 18th”

True. Ryan could have gone back a month further. Since 4/19 the Yankees are 58-37 and Boston is 58-38. Can’t ignore those 1st two weeks though, when the Yankees jumped off at 9-3 while Boston stumbled out at 4-9.

    Let the trade chatter begin….

Kansas City ace Zack Greinke didn’t seem as caught up in “raves from outside the organization” relating to the Royals farm as the franchise might be on the whole. “The biggest problem is I have two more years on my contract. Are those guys supposed to make it up by the beginning of next year?” Tell him, yes, some are projected to reach the majors next year, and Greinke just shakes his head. … “It’s been six years with me, and most people (who are Royals fans) have been through a lot more than I have. But for me, it’s the third complete re-start/rebuilding phase.” Would he be happier elsewhere? “I like Kansas City,” Greinke said. “It’s a town that fits me pretty well. But I don’t know … at least put a team together that has a fighting chance (to win).”

  75. Melkmanisinhotlanta August 6th, 2010 at 11:24 am

All of this Melky bashing is very shocking to the system. Certainly all of the caterwauling was mute during his clutch walk off hits last year? He was a part of the energy that was brought back to the former tired corporate Yankee club house. We all need to bow our heads with respect to the memory of Melky Cabrerra as a NYY. Amen brother and may you go on to hit close to .300 in Hotlanta!

  77. blake August 6th, 2010 at 11:26 am

Not Melky bashing. Let me clarify. I like Melky and think he did some good things for the Yankees last year and was a contributor to their championship. That said, you don’t hesitate to trade him in the deal the Yankees made and he has regressed outside the protection of the Yankee lineup. Plus trading him allowed Gardner to emerge. He’s not hitting .300 and could very well be a bench player next season.

I haven’t seen the play, but Jason Smith was disturbed by it. Went on about it. The thing that bothered him is that he refused to ask for help on the play (archaic practice, even the NBA gets it right-there’s no protocol in overriding another official). But the worst thing was his comments after the game even after watching the replay.

Thanks for that great article, pat. Well worth the read. Some day, they might actually figure out a near exact equation for the number of homers that a player had with the help of PEDs. Something else that causes the home run spikes is the overall poor pitching. Every era has their share of stud pitchers, but, it’s the 2nd tier that’s gotten worse and the dependence on below average bullpens. Again, thank you for the article. I remain an 5%-10% boost is the most that it would help, and those percentages are most likely on the high side.

I was a Javy hater when we first picked him up. He has progressed and done well for a fifth starter, but I wouldn’t put him in a pressure packed playoff situation where he could implode ala 2004. Let him keep Cliff Lees spot in the rotation nice and warm.

You lose credibility points when there are myriads of choices to go with and you go with a figure skating reference.
Not only is that sexist, but its pretty rude too. Figure skating is a sport as well, man, just like baseball. I hope you were kidding, then I could say LOL

I think its funny how a relief appearance 6 years ago means Javy would automatically implode if given a playoff start. Playoffs start today….he’s one of the four I’m going with.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How do you translate Melky’s numbers into leading his team to a National League pennant? Compare his numbers to Gardner’s, then you’ll see why he was traded.

    Melky – Avg .267, OBP .329, SLG .377, OPS .706, SB 4

    Brett – Avg .290, OBP .388, SLG .392, OPS .780, SB 30

    Some comments about Mo…

The original post by Chad said "When rounded — like it will be in every statistical listing ever — Mariano Rivera now has a 1.00 career WHIP."

That is really an amazing stat! But, I want to add to it that the career WHIP is actually below 1.000. I think that's how I would emphasize it.

Also, in some ways even more incredible, is the fact that Mo's WHIP has been under 1.00 the last 3 years in a row, and 4 of the last 5… Seems like Mo ages like a fine wine.

Finally, his number of saves this year is "off" just a little bit. But that's not his fault. There just have not been enough save opportunities. Lots of the Yankees wins are by 4 or more runs.

Yesterday I mentioned how the Yanks signed their 30th rd pick for 265k. They just signed their 6th rounder for 300k. So the money they gave the 30th rounder tells you what they think of his potential.

Both pitchers have legit upside. The Yanks just continue to stockpile arms. Right now they have legit arms at every level of the farm. Good times.

  120. CountryClub August 6th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

A little bit more on Encinas (BTW, he won’t be 19 until December and he’s a Yankees fan)….

Bronx Baseball Daily had this blurb from Baseball America on draft day: Between showcase events last summer and fall and the spring season, Encinas boosted his stock significantly by improving his conditioning and mechanics. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, he now looks the part of the classic lanky and projectable high school righthander. His stuff didn’t significantly improve, but he can maintain it deep into starts now. Encinas delivers a fastball that sits comfortably in the 90-92 mph range, and he shows a nice feel for mixing in a crisp curveball and changeup, which is probably the best changeup among Southern California prepsters. With smooth mechanics and an advanced feel for pitching, Encinas does an excellent job of mixing pitches, speeds and locations, and altering pitch sequences from at-bat at-bat. The large flock of scouts who started following Encinas this spring–particularly in games against top prospects Angelo Gumbs and Austin Wilson–did not seem to faze him. He profiles as a mid-rotation starter, and a future bump in velocity could even improve that outlook. He’s committed to Loyola Marymount.

One thing that worries me is that the series which begins tonight is far more important to the Red Sox than it is the Yankees. Boston’s season is on the line and if they do poorly their plight may be hopeless by Monday night. For the Yankees this is just anopther series in along string of series that they want to do well in…but the Yankees aren’t desperate for this series.

Experience tells me that the team that NEEDS to win a series like this usually DOES SO instead of the team that merely would like to win it. That makes me nervous!!! Is anyone else concerned about that? Is there anything Joe Girardi can do about it?

On paper…yes. But you can expect them to come out as though their season is on the line (because it is). There is still a good bit of talent on that team (Ortiz, Lowell, Martinez, Beltre, Drew, etc) and their pitching staff is intact. I think they’re attitude will be to try to win the series to provide incentive so that Pedroia will come back quicker and so the front office will decide to make a deal for another bat.

I just don’t like battling against a cornered cat. Considering the way the Yankees played against Tampa Bay and Toronto I’m not excited about the momentum they are bringing into the series. I guess that I’m a worry-wort but I just don’t like they way things are set up for this series.

Bill, it certainly is true that their hitting is suspect at this stage. In order to climb back into the wildcard race they need to win a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 games…that is, indeed, tough to do when you go on the road. Not even sure Cashman would be willing to give Berkman the Nick Johnson deal next year, as they may need to keep the DH open for the likes of Montero, Posada and occasionally the old folks on the left side of the infield.

“I meant that picking him up for the stretch run was a gamble. Sort of like buying a stock that’s been beaten down and you think it’s going to bounce back”

Paying 50 cents on the dollar on this particular stock mitigates the gamble considerably.

  159. Bill D August 6th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Not arguing that this isn’t an important series. Guess I ‘m just saying the Red Sox are bringing a knife to a gunfight.

  160. Melkmanisinhotlanta August 6th, 2010 at 12:54 pm

“Paying 50 cents on the dollar on this particular stock mitigates the gamble considerably.”

It’s a shame that someone as good as Berksie used to be is now a rental. If Long can’t fix him, he will retire. Not a bad time to retire after #28 is put in the books.

  161. blake August 6th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

    Bill D,

Maybe, depends on how the Sox pitch and how the Yankees play. If both teams play their best then the Yanks should take 3 of 4 because they are better than the Sox but you just never really know. A split would be satisfactory, 3 of 4 would be great, and a sweep lowers the Sox into their coffin. I’ll predict 3 of 4.

  162. Bill D August 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

    Blake:

I’m thinking 3 of 4 too. Pitching as you suggest is the wild card. If the a couple of the Bosox throw gems, then they can win 2-3 games. If not, they are not likely able to keep pace with the Yankees bats.

  163. Jeremy August 6th, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I’m not saying that the Sox are done meaning eliminated. But the Sox are not going to make it to the playoffs with a strong Yankees and Rays team in the mix. That’s the point I’m trying to make. They will be out of this race pretty soon.
