Rodriguez helped off the field in batting practice

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 07, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Very odd scene here during batting practice. It seems Alex Rodriguez was hit in the leg by a batted ball.

I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary until Rodriguez went behind the screen behind second base and was checked by the Yankees training staff. The guys in the outfield gathered around him while BP continued. He was on the ground while the staff checked on him, then they walked him off the field.

No clue what his status might be. It all just happened.

NYPost_Kernan The concern in Girardi’s face was evident A-Rod was doing his usually fielding work when everyone in the cage screamed: “Look out” Too late

  7. SJ44 August 7th, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Its not Berkman’s fault. Its a freak accident.

Believe it or not, they do happen.

so the guy hitting .100 just took out the guy leading the team in rbis? not really what this “offense” needed.

  12. Carl August 7th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

A-Rod to come out of the dugout like Willis reed. Hit 4 homers.

    Messing up the popups…

Javy didn’t mess up the popup. Cervelli called him off and dropped it. The pitcher has to yield to any other fielder, otherwise you get collisions with your pitcher, which is obviously bad. I think you know this…

I think it was a much easier play for the pitcher and Cervelli should not have called him off.

  26. Captain Clutch August 7th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I hope Arod is ok. The only place Pena should be taking ground balls is in AAA.

I love these three quotes from that Frank Piliere writeup on Brackman:

“The sooner he realizes that hitters are looking most helpless against his fastball than any of his other pitches the better off he’ll be.”

“From his height, he gets an enormous late drop on his curveball, and when he’s locating he can be close to unhittable.”

“His changeup grades out a solid-average 5 on the 2-8 scouting scale, and couple that with his plus fastball and curve and you have a complete three-pitch pitcher.”

Very, very encouraging stuff, especially considering Piliere’s track record when it comes to scouting Brackman.

How unfortunately ironic in light of what I was just talking about. I won’t say I told you so, hopefully it’s nothing serious. But if it is Peña is our only option.

That has nothing to do with age. No irony involved.

Do you think calling fans on a blog with an opinion insane is appropriate? My point was that Cashman/Hal did not plan adequately for this kind of eventuality. It doesn’t matter how A-Rod gets hurt, what matters is that Peña is the only option.

  37. SJ44 August 7th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

    Not according to Girardi….

On the popup, its called a “last resort play”.

Javy has to take charge of that because its the easier play for him.

If he doesn’t, he has to get out of the way and not be close to Cervelli.

It was Cervelli’s error but, Javy messed up the play according to Girardi.

Girardi is right on this one. Its how they drill that play in ST.

If the pitcher gets that close to the play, he has to take charge and make the catch.

That’s why its called the “last resort play”.

  56. Yankee Trader August 7th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Excerpt from River Avenue Blues on Cervelli:

The botched pop-up last night was his seventh error of the season, and only Jason Kendall, with 300 more innings, has a higher error totals. The Yanks’ catchers now lead the AL with 13 errors on the year. He has allowed two passed balls while pitchers have thrown 22 wild pitches with him behind the dish. He’s also thrown out only seven of 44 would-be basestealers, and while much of that rests with the Yanks’ pitchers’ inability to hold runners on, Cervelli’s arm just hasn’t been as strong or as accurate as billed. That 16 percent rate is worst among all AL catchers with at least 300 innings caught. He’s fidgety behind the plate, and often lets his enthusiasm get in the way of framing pitchers and receiving the ball. Last night, he jumped up on a few pitches and may have cost the Yanks’ hurlers some called strikes.

terrible news indeed, does that mean we can skip him the rest of year and bring up Ivan Nova?

  60. CR9 August 7th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

They say that every starter occasionally faces this issue, so it’s not that big a deal. But it explains yesterdays performance

  61. GreenBeret7 August 7th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

  62. ac1 August 7th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

i agree. the way i figure it, nova cannot be worse than what we have often received from javy and/or aj this year.

  63. Yankee Trader August 7th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

My arm would be dead too if I had to throw 60 pitches in the 1st 2 innings last night.

  64. hardwired7 August 7th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Luckily, Cervelli’s just keeping the seat warm.

I think we can safely say there has never been a team in the history of the game w/depth @C like the Yankees have right now.

That’s why its called the “last resort play”.

About the only possible criticism of Javy on that play imo is that he didn’t “get out of the way enough”. But the ball still hit Cervelli right in the glove, and there was no contact. If I’m the pitcher and another fielder calls for the ball, I get out of the way, period. I don’t agree with Girardi because I don’t think there is any “taking charge” on a fielding play by a pitcher. If the catcher calls it I’d rather see my pitcher get out of the way and have the ball dropped than their possibly being a collision.

  68. Silvermine Slugger August 7th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

One catcher has to learn to hit, the other has to learn to catch.

  69. BumKnee August 7th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Green Beret–any report from you on the sound of Berkman’s bat? Did he buy one from Bautista? You continue to be a hopeless clown.

  70. Cashmoney August 7th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

The White Sox lead the Twins by 2? games.

”What you see is what you get,” Guillen said of Vazquez. ”Javy is going to be Javy. I just want him to be aggressive, throw the ball over the plate and knock somebody on their [butt]. That’s a big three games for us.

”You have to be mean. Go out there and show them we show up to play, show up to kick your guys’ [butts]. And believe me, that will take care of itself.”
    ——————————————————————————————
    Javy’s response

”I’m not looking to have to change minds if people feel that way,” Vazquez said. “I won’t be paying attention to that. If I do well or if I don’t, I’ll still go home at the end of my career and be the same person.”

btw, Javy bombed all his starts after Guillen’s challenge.
