I think it’s time for ARod to get Hot!
Who bats 3rd with no Tex?

I guess tonight I’d go with:

    Jeter-ss
    Swish-rf
    ARod-3b
    Cano-2b
    Thames-dh
    Kearns-lf
    Fat Elvis-1b
    Cervelli-c
    Gardner-cf

And they say you Maine boys aren’t very bright?
    ***************
That isn’t necessarily true. However, I was checking my hometown newspaper this morning and saw that some “bright” man (a former drug felon) was at a police station signing papers and they conducted a random search on him and found cocaine in his shoes! How dumb! LOL

  7. CB August 10th, 2010 at 11:32 am

Granderson has clearly disappointed. His production hasn’t been there.

That said, Curtis Granderson isn’t the single reason why the Yanks have struggled more against LH pitchers than RH pitchers. Is he a significant part of the problem? Yes.
but the problem is deeper than that.

Ultimately, this season the Alex, Jeter and the DH slot haven’t hit for as much power as they did last season. And Tex wasn’t that great even from the right hand side even in the beginning of the season. That’s the fundamental issue.

If Alex Rodriguez is going to hit for a sub-.500 slugging percentage and Derek Jeter is going to hit for a sub .400 slugging % this team is going to find it difficult against lefties.

    Congrats to Tex!

Need to win this game tonight…give it the good ole college try tomorrow, then take care of business in KC this weekend.

Re: Granderson. I think you can beleve that he can improve and have a better season next year and still understand that they have to do what’s best for the team now this year. That’s where I am I think. I still have hope for improvement with some swing changes and a second year in NY but I realize that if its not working this year then you have to try something else. Just doesn’t look like he’s seeing the ball…if its not thrown in his swing groove he seems to miss it by a mile. I’d stick with him awhile longer against righties for his defense if nothing else.

  15. YankeeBlue222 August 10th, 2010 at 11:38 am

I heard Teixeira and his wife were attempting to conceive a child in April/May so that it wouldn’t conflict with the season.

However, they were having a hard time. Something about Tex not being able to deliver in April.

Burnett needs to come up big tonight (I hope his back’s okay). He seems to be a good matchup against the Rangers. Last year he pitched a gem in Texas and struck out 12 in his home start against them. He has already faced them once this year and pitched 7 scoreless innings.

  22. Don Vito A. Bellamo August 10th, 2010 at 11:47 am

Taking both of these games in Texas will be huge for SO many reasons. Put the close loss to Boston completely in the rear view mirror, AJ is healthy and “good” tonight, actually BEATING Cliff Lee on the road, etc. Big opportunity here, I would love to see the Yankees rise to the challenge !

  23. pat August 10th, 2010 at 11:50 am

    From Biz of Baseball

“According to WADA president John Fahey, the agency?s criteria for banning a substance is whether it gives a competitive edge, is potentially injurious to health and is against the spirit of sport. In Fahey?s opinion, caffeine failed all three of those tests and he told The Age newspaper he intends to ask the agency?s medical committee to consider a new ban when it meets in September.”

Could you imagine a 162 game in 180 baseball season sans caffeine? I can’t walk the dog in the morning without caffeine.

  24. Andrew August 10th, 2010 at 11:55 am

If our offense continues to struggle (especially against LHP), any chance Montero is brought up after September 1st as a part-time DH?

  33. Yankee Trader August 10th, 2010 at 12:06 pm

    CB-

Kearns hits righties better, and Berkman is no better against lefties than Granderson.

Vazquez will need more than the usual 3 runs of support against Lee, and AJ hopefully can keep us into the game, because both of their pitchers have been consistently terrific.

  34. RayVT August 10th, 2010 at 12:06 pm

A few words about Grandy! Everyone knows the saying you are never as bad as one looks when they are losing (struggling) or as good as they look when winning (success) and this applies to Granderson! He is trying to think too much and hit at the same time & we all know what Yogi said about that! LOL!

I believe Grandy will get thru this and be a productive hitter starting in the next few days. I think he will start both games in CF in Texas and he will start to work it out. He is a talented player who has lost confidence and is probably trying to listen too much to the advice being given. He is too good of a talent to continue doing poorly. I believe he gets a hit in his 1st AB today and then starts a hot streak.

    ………………………………………

Good thought as a postseason option but Girardi would have to make rotation adjustments in late September opposed to going with left-right-left-right as he likes doing.

  41. Your Name Here August 10th, 2010 at 12:14 pm

How come there was no discussion about the fan in the 7th inning?

Runners on second and third, no outs. Kearns up to bat. Kearns fouls a pitch off deep into the corner, fan reaches over and stops Kalish from catching the ball. Posada would have easily have scored on that fly ball. Instead… we all know what happened. HBP, K, K, K.

    Crowd cheered the fan too.

Tht’s probably one of the most ignorant statements I’ve read on here, and I’ve read a ton of them.

Montero just started hitting AAA pitching. What makes you think he can come up, as a part-time DH, and start hitting Major Leaue pitching? Seriously…

You people and your blind love for prospects. He was almost gone for Cliff Lee, y;know.

  53. YankFanCA August 10th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Yanks need to find a way to scratch out one of two in Texas. The pitching match-ups clearly favor Texas, so somehow either Burnett or Vazquez needs to come up big. Sad that neither one inspires any confidence at all.

  54. RayVT August 10th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Joe from Long Island August 10th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

I hope so too! Grandy looks as bad as Tex did in April & May. Unfortunately, Gardy looks equally bad against LHP lately. I think Granderson will get more opportunities to play thru the LHP than Gardner because Gardner is potentially more valuable as a PR. (Provided he decides to steal a base when he is brought ito a game.)

  55. MTU August 10th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

I heard mention somewhere, I think it was a post game show, that Cervelli was catching AJ and Javy…is this all the time? and why? Po would be the catcher during play offs.

    Swisher RF
    Cano 2B
    Rodriguez 3B
    Posada C
    Berkman DH
    Granderson CF
    Cervelli C
    Gardner LF

  65. G-C August 10th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Its time people laid off Granderson.

Not for anything, but he’s far from the biggest “problem” this team has right now. And I say “problem” because I think there are 29 other teams in the league that would love to have those issues bestowed upon them.

Alex Rodriguez is barely OPSing .800 anymore. He’s hitting .264/.336/.469. That is far further off his typical production than Granderson’s numbers, and he’s getting paid over 30 million dollars to put up that line.

I don’t like ragging on Arod, but his offensive performance this year is probably the single biggest concern I have on the team. He really has struggled all year and hasn’t shown anything that gives me a whole lot of confidence that he’s going to pick it up in a big way.

GB, if you had to do your own little preliminary top 10 prospect list for the upcoming offseason, what would it look like?

    1- Jesus Montero, C
    2- Dellin Betances, SP
    3- Gary Sanchez, C
    4- Andrew Brackman, SP
    5- Austin Romine, C
    6- Brandon Laird, 3B
    7- Jose Ramirez, SP
    8- Slade Heathcott, CF
    9- Eduardo Nunez, SS
    10- Graham Stoneburner, SP

    More stats: Posada – 7 E, Cervelli – 7 E, Montero – 5 E, Romine – 4 E.

Last one: Cervelli – 2 PB, Posada – 4 PB, Romine – 6 PB, Montero – 14 PB (85 games). Montero had 11 PB in 59 games last year.

The photos aren’t much but they are my way of saying thanks to everyone. I hope they bring pleasure.

They certainly made me wish I had done more traveling this summer to places beyond NJ.

In two weeks I’ll be back at school and for the first time I won’t really have ventured beyond the cozy comforts of the good ole’ Jersey Shore.

Glad things are improving for you and your family and hope they continue to get better and better.

GLove, I’m just accessing a computer now -( yay lunch breaks). No, I’m not worried long term about Granderson because I refuse to believe a player can just lose it like that. He’s struggling mightily – that does not mean he’s done. I’m worried for this year- yes, I will admit that – and the Yankees need to find a way around it. He’s going to hurt us – unfortunately. However, I hate the “If George were here” philosophy. First of all, he’s not. Second of all, I didn’t like – no, I HATED the way the Old George screamed and ranted and tried to motivate players. He was wrong to do that.

    RMS-

    Thanks for the warm wishes.

I have often wondered what people think of my posting photos on a baseball blog.

It was never my intention to annoy, or to distract from the conversation though that may have happened.

It was only to share my joy and love of the out of doors, and where I live.

I then started my YMH tributes as well.

No one ever threw a blog grenade my way so I figured people either liked them (some said so), or tolerated them.

I love talking baseball, joking around, and sharing what I love.

I never meant to offend anyone in the process. I hope I added something good instead of taking away from other poeple’s passion.

    :)

  92. Betsy August 10th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Joe, I eat before I breathe – that’s how important it is to me,lol.

Tex was missing for 1/2 the year, Jeter has really struggled (except lately) and Alex has not had a great year. How is it again that Granderson is the problem? I also refuse to blame him because Gardner is struggling now; are his problems magnified? Yes, but that’s not his fault – that’s Gardners.

  93. Joe from Long Island August 10th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

MTU – you’re doing just great here. Much better than some of the dodos.

Got to run. Later, for the game.

  94. Pat M. August 10th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I still say Curtis Granderson will come around and pay of great dividneds come crunch time…….MTU, I’m late to the party, so whatever ripples that have entered your life, I do hope things improve soon……Keep the faith my friend, sometimes it’s all we have

I don’t see both Gardner and Granderson starting either of the next two games.
Gardner starts tonight, Granderson tomorrow night. Kearns will be in LF the next 2-3 games.
I also think Posada gets a full day off today with Thames the DH. I think Posada catches tomorrow with Thames back at DH. We are going to see lots of Thames and Kearns the next 3 days as we should without Tex’s bat in the lineup.

  96. MTU August 10th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

    Pat M.-

A voice of good cheer is never too late. Thanks.

And I hope you are right about Curtis. I’m sticking with him until he leaves me no choice. :)

  97. MTU August 10th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

    Joe/Erin/Kate-

I’m glad you enjoyed them. :)

  98. Bob August 10th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

if CJ Wilson throws a ton of change ups, curve balls, & junk, our offense will be 3 up 3 down. And then there’s soft tossin’ Cliff Lee next. Yikes.

  99. tk August 10th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Interesting note on the Granderson discussion: this year 33% of his plate appearances have been vs. LHP compared to 23% prior to 2010. Let’s hope Girardi changes course in his usage of Granderson…

  100. jacksquat August 10th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

    Granderson hasn’t just “lost it”.

    2007 – .913 ops
    2008 – .859 ops
    2009 – .780 ops
    2010 – .724 ops

He hasn’t just suddenly lost it, the trend over years is simply continuing. And his ops decline is far less dramatic than Arod’s:

    2009 – .934
    2010 – .805

    or Jeter:

    2009 – .871
    2010 – .733

A much bigger drop, and yes, *Jeter’s OPS is only .009 higher than Granderson’s*. And Granderson plays better defense at his position.

Yes, I would let Kearns start playing vs lefties, but I think the bashing of Granderson has become a bit excessive lately.

It seems some people won’t be happy until there is an All-Star at every position and every spot in the lineup. That’s not happening.

  101. Bronx Jeers August 10th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

I too will continue to ride the Granderson bandwagon train until it’s reached its last stop.

What else is there to do?

  102. MTU August 10th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

    Bronx-

Throw him under a bus ?

    Lynch him ?

Ask for our money back ?

    Reverse the trade ?

Turn him into an expensive utility player ?

Wait for Long to improve him ?

Just give up on him, and sink the money ?

Any of these would work for various people.

You know where I stand. :)

  103. West Coast Yankee Fan August 10th, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Granderson’s performance this year is no more of a surprise than Nick Johnson being on the DL all year. He strikes out too much and can’t hit lefties – this was/is a shock to whom? Brian Cashman made a bad couple of deals. That’s pretty clear at this point. Although I place some of that blame on Hal’s doorstep for the sudden budget constraints last winter.

  104. pat August 10th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

There were no budget constraints last winter. There was cost/value analysis.

  105. Bob August 10th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Many Yankee fans can’t believe Cashman deleted Damon, Matsui, and Melky from our offense. 3 players who produced and were clutch all year. Granderson and Nick had some red flags, and Cashman knew those 3 could consistently come through. I guess this was a function of the budget plan.

  106. raymagnetic August 10th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

“Although I place some of that blame on Hal’s doorstep for the sudden budget constraints last winter.”

According to Cot’s the Yankees opening day payroll was 12 million more this year than it was last year

  107. raymagnetic August 10th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Ten years ago the Yankees payroll was 100 million dollars less than it was this year.

    Inflation is a mother. ;)

  108. Yank 97 August 10th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Long’s quote was spot on in the Post -

“He’s had a tough year until this point,” Long agreed. “But we are not going to give up. He works his tail off. There have been occasions in which I have said, ‘Here it comes,’ but the day-in, day-out consistency has not been there.”

He has one good game, then disappears for 10 days. He never builds on a good game. Cash knew he was taking a risk when he acquired him – he has a lot of moving parts and flaws… can’t hit lefties, doesn’t hit for average, doesn’t walk, isin’t a very good base stealer, and is streaky as heck. The power has disappeared as well – remember when he was supposed to abuse the RF pole and hit 35-40 HRs? All he is this year is a defensive player. His OPS has gone down every year since 07.

Yesterday should have been the last straw as far as playing him against lefties is concerned.

  109. West Coast Yankee Fan August 10th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

The Yankees are valued at almost $2 billion dollars. They spent $2.8 million on their entire bench this year. I understand budget constraints, but there isn’t much substantive difference between $210 million and $220 million for a team like the Yankees. The new stadium is a cash cow, along with YES, the stadium operations company they have with Jerry Jones, merchandise revenue, foreign revenue and much more.

    ========

I think age and talent were larger issues. Damon and Matsui were going to be relegated to DH roles, which neither wanted to take. Damon had a good offer on the table from the Yankees and decided to wait for a ‘better offer’. When it was clear he wasn’t going to take the offer, it was yanked. Then he got stuck in limbo. Matsui wanted to play LF as well, even with his shot knees.

On paper, I was all for the Granderson trade. Has it worked out yet? Obviously not, but I believe Granderson will turn it around (maybe not this year) and be a productive member of the team with + defense in CF. Gard/Grand/Swish is a much better outfield than Damon/Gard/Swish or Mats/Gard/Swish.

I always liked NJ and had concerns about the signing too, but was game to take the chance. It didn’t work out unfortunately.

Melky is what he is. An average fielder (at best) with a good arm, not a great hitter with some pop. Look at what he’s doing in ATL, in the NL, and you’ll see what he really is.

Contrary to what some fans think and want, budget is always a factor, even for the Yankees. So the idea that some have that they can “just go get” Lee and Crawford next year is ludicrous. Granderson is young and talented. He’s having a bad year. Look at Swish’s year with CWS. That was a bad year, too, but the Yanks had some faith and insight that he’d turn it around.

Limit Grandy’s ability to damage the club this year and hope that work in the off season gets him right.

    MTU,

I hate to ask but what happened to said family member? Just got a few bits and pieces here and there.

Hope all is well and he/she is on the road to recovery.

Baseball and football were both excellent distractions for me when I was down for quite awhile – 19 weeks in the hospital – from October to March.

  112. watercoolerdestroyer21 August 10th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Lineup I would like to see

    SS Jeter
    CF Gardner
    RF Swisher
    3B Arod
    2B Cano
    DH Thames
    1B Berkman
    LF Kearns
    C Cervelli

The lineup you’ll probably see (therefore my guess)

    SS Jeter
    RF Swisher
    3B Arod
    2B Cano
    DH Thames
    1B Berkman
    LF Kearns
    C Cervelli
    CF Gardner

    ********

I don’t think that is the issue. I think it’s that we gave up a top prospect and a serviceable LHP reliever for someone who makes twice as much money than his replacement (Melky) for the same (if not worse) production.

  115. MTU August 10th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

    GF-

    That’s no problem.

It was an immediate family member.

They were badly injured in a fall. Required surgical intervention.

The first few days were touch and go.

As of today it’s looks like they are just about out of danger and the long and dfficult road to recovery can start soon.

They face a lengthy and painful rehab but at least disaster has hopefully been averted.

I though of you at times because I remebered your struggles coming back from your problems.

This person faces similar challenges but is much older than you.

I am hoping for a complete or near complete recovery.

    Thanks for asking. :)

Two lefties in Texas, any chance that we can send Granderson back to help with the birth and have Tex play?

  117. scuzzles August 10th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Just great. We have our 2 bums pitching the next two games…
