Sabathia pitches, Granderson hits, Yankees win
It got dicey in the end, but there was more good than bad in tonight’s 4-3 Yankees win in Kansas City. CC Sabathia nearly pitched his first complete game since April 22, the Yankees picked up a half game in the American League East and Curtis Granderson’s new hitting mechanics had an impressive debut. Granderson went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and his first extra-base hit against a lefty since June 1. Derek Jeter, Nick Swisher and Austin Kearns also had multiple hits, with Kearns going deep.

D-Rob saved Girardi from having to answer a lot of heated questions tonight
The game just ended 2 seconds ago…………wow
I’ve been following along as best I could from a secret, remote location.
Now I can hide out a happy man.
I have a ton of confidence in DRob.
Drob’s 2nd pitch, he was cheated. He was welcomed accordingly by the HP umpire. Scumbag umpires cheated CC all night long, but give the Royals pitchers strikes that were inside. GOtta love bias!
So do I at this point, but if the reason why Joe took CC out is because of a matchup, he’s insane
I think it had to be the pitch count, otherwise Girardi is unfit for this (or any) job.
Girardi blunders his way forward again?
110 pitches? I don’t like to push CC either – but 110 is not a lot, not with 2 outs in the 9th.
Cliff Lee has been the best pitcher in the game and last night in the heat he started to wither before getting through 7 innings. In turn his bull pen couldn’t hold a two run lead.
In similar conditions of heat and humidity CC is able to get this team into the 9nth inning on a night where Mo is unavailable requiring the bull pen to only get one out.
CC is just great.
Chad is lucky that the Yanks didn’t blow the game in the 9th he would have to rewrite this post that was probably written an hour ago lol
Aug 12, 2009: 71-43. +96 run differential.
Aug 12, 2010: 71-43. +139 run differential.
It’s really hot, Betsy.
Bloomquist was 2-3 off CC tonight and is a career .320 hitter against CC
That was probably Joe’s logic.
Is it that hot in KC?
“Aug 12, 2009: 71-43. +96 run differential.
Aug 12, 2010: 71-43. +139 run differential.”
That’s pretty remarkable.
This team has much better pitching than the 2009 club had. Much better.
I guess KC can be brutal at this time of year………….Melk Man, if that was Joe’s logic, then that’s awfully scary.
Good thing no one pulled a Papelbum in the 9th inning
And if CC allows Bloomquist to get on, Joe is getting killed for leaving him in there with 110+ pitches in 95 degree heat, rather than letting Robertson try and get 3 outs with a fresh inning.
He can’t win either way. Just be thankful it worked out (as basically 90% of his moves do. When is the last BP move or intentional walk or anything that backfired?)
I didn’t know that the Rangers pitching coach was also the WB Mason pitch-man
CC was running out of gas. It was hot and he pitched a hell of a game. You don’t leave a tired pitcher in to lose a game like that.
Robertson needs his high socks! That’s my favorite thing about him. Besides his good relief work.
“He can’t win either way.”
Can that really be fairly said about any manager that can usually rely on the greatest closer in the history of the world?
93 degrees feels like 104 degrees at 10 pm is more than pretty hot.
That’s the beauty of baseball. There is no taking a knee, or running a four corners, you have to get that last man out.
Girardi knows what he is doing. He knows his players better than any of us.
Robertson needs his high socks! That’s my favorite thing about him. Besides his good relief work.
———————————————————————————————————————
I like CC’s enormous pants. They just look like fun.
His pitchin’s alright too.
I am still kinda of stun that the Dodgers lost that game in Phillies. Joe Torre has had some pretty bad walk off losses this year.
Gnight everyone. Nice solid win tonight. CC shows again why he makes the big bucks.
The story of the night might be Granderson though and the fact the the changes paid such a quick return. He had a really good game. Will it continue and has he found something here? Hopefully, but tonight certainly can’t hurt his confidence. It would make a pretty big impact on this offense if he started to hit like we all thought he could.
Ledger_Yankees
Swisher; pulled from game because he looked exhausted b/c of heat the last 3 nights
Night, Blake!
I’m very happy for Granderson and I hope he has a good game tomorrow. I’m not sure the changes will completely kick in until next year, but for now it’s a good start.
Nancy Newman, not awkward at all.
The way I look at it is all wins are beautiful no matter how ugly.
RoboGrandy looked good in his debut appearance.
Good Nite people. See U in the morning.
Yeah, Joe said pitch count/heat, as some of us expected.
Poor Swish – I’m glad Joe got him out of there. It’s been a brutal summer in NY, so the Yanks just left their own steambox for Texas and KC, two more steamboxes.
This year’s pitching and last year’s offense would possibly result in a 120 win season.
Once again, Joe nearly overmanaged the team to a loss. Cubbies, please call soon.
K.C. is on a 5 game losing streak so they are hungry for a win, and the law of averages has to be in their favor.
Yanks gotta be ready tomorrow.
One more game off the schedule, and Boston is falling further behind.
Just be thankful we didn’t have Jonathan Broxton out there. I hate the Dodgers with the intensity of a thousand suns, but you gotta feel for the guy. Being the competitor that he is he has to feel awful.
“This never would have happened if we had Rivera.”
The common theme today on SoSH, and all the other Sox boards.
For over a decade and a half we’ve been blessed as Yankee fans.
If Mo was available, he “probably” would have started the 9th.
On all other fan boards, period………….
Broxton – Torre = a less worn out closer
Good win – but agreed on Granderson. Really liked the at bats he had. His hands are back further, more loaded and closer to launch position. Long closes his stance as well.
He looked like he was much quicker through the zone and more direct to the ball. Had some really nice swings. Chen isn’t very good but he is a lefty that throws a ton of junk and curtis had no problem seeing those pitches, staying back and exploding through the zone to square them up.
He also had much less movement. And it looked like that may have reduced the way he used to bob his head and allowed him to follow the ball better and track it out of the pitcher’s hands.
Just 4 plate appearances but he’s been so bad recently the differences were stark.
Going to be a lot of IVs tonight.
And Sox fans on SoSH are killing Francona for taking Lackey out and/or not going to Bard sooner.
No fanbase is ever happy with their manager. The grass is always greener….
If Bloomquist played every day, he’d be Marco Scutaro with speed. He’s a good, solid ball player.
On all other fan boards, period…………
——————–
so true
while I dread the day he announces his retirement, I know one thing for a fact: I will be in Cooperstown when his day comes.
“Going to be a lot of IVs tonight.”
A regular (Swish, Derek or Alex) at DH tomorrow would also be a good bet.
“No fanbase is ever happy with their manager. The grass is always greener….”
After enduring through the extremely overrated Joe Torre for too many post 2004 seasons, I am relatively happy with Girardi. That doesn’t mean I agree with every move. I actually understood what he did tonight.
But again, if you are lucky enough to manage with Mo as your closer, you have an incredible advantage.
NYYs need a couple of blowout wins over the next two games to rest the bullpen.
Ledger_Yankees
FYI Yanks’ radar gun had cc sitting at 95, touching 98 several times. I’m told stadium gun was 1-2 mph higher all night.
Ken Singleton and John Flattery said that on the field it was 106 degrees, They also said the humidity was very high. No wonder everyone was “gassed” as Girardi said

Agree.
I’m happy with Girardi. He may not be the best strategist, and may play it “by the book” too often, but Im more than satisfied.
A guy that wears the number “27″ or “28″, etc. on his back because he wants the weight of the goal to be put on himself and his team is a man after my own heart.
Not only that, he brought this team together as a family last year and made New York a fun place to play for the players – while also holding the team and players accountable.
Joe Torre was more concerned with his cliques and treating others like crap – most notably AROD
Well, that’s it for me, hopefully I will see you all tomorrow.
Adios!

I’d give it to Jeter and sit Swisher, unless he comes to the park whistling and dancing.
Am I the only one upset that CC’s stats are worse? His ERA would have been 3.06 if he didn’t give up the runs in the 9th.
“I also don’t understand the fear others have for the Red Sox, whether they are 2 games back or 10 games back. ”
GF I couldn’t agree with you more. I guess people are entitled to be agog over a third-place team – but some of these are the same people who obssess over each and every game as if it is the end of the world. Putting those things together its hard to take the Sux adulation very seriously.
Again, I don’t always agree with SJ, but he really outlined the entire thing very nicely IMO. Realistically the Sux are not to be feared and are going nowhere. It doesn’t mean that they haven’t done a relatively credible job based on their situation. BFD. A lot of teams play over their heads when they have to circle the wagons due to injuries. It’s called stepping it up. The Sux don’t corner the market on that, nor do they own the rights to it.
I believe in giving credit where it’s due. I gave Betsy credit earlier (don’t know it you saw it Bets) for acknowledging excessive worry at times and consciously trying to rein it in. I also give Yanks fan in CA credit today for acknowledging that he had given the Sux bullpen too much credit.
If you watched the end of the Sux game, saw the Sux fall back to 7 behind the Yanks in the loss column, and are still thinking they are a team that will make a run at the postseason, all I can say is that you have a problem that you probably will just have to live with. I’m betting your take is the same season after season – and even though you end up being wrong, you still come back for more the next season. 2004* means a lot more to you than it needs to.
JMO
The other key thing regarding Girardi is that he manages the “rest versus rust” very well. Credit to SJ44 for “rest versus rust”
He is able to rest our aging players to keep them healthy.
As much as people kill Girardi for his moves, don’t they pretty much always work? What’s the last game that was blown because of his decisions? He takes a lot of risks, but they all seem to work.
” What’s the last game that was blown because of his decisions? ”
I can’t recall one particular game, but I thought he stuck with Joba in the 8th far too long.
Smoking hot night tonight, Mo isn’t available, and CC pitches to contact to go deep into the game.
The very definition of an “ace”.
If they can figure out a way to get out #9 hitters, life gets much easier.
Considering they have played three straight games in over 100 degree weather on the field, and didn’t get into KC until 3 am, this is a very nice win.
I will never forgive Torre for 2004!!!
Actually, 2003 was awful too…
No one mentioned how badly A Rod and Teixeira are overswinging. A lot of non competing from the three/four hitters in the last while. What happened to the Alex of last fall? Totally balanced and in control swings. Now, he’s lost at the plate. The talent is there, he just looks out of sync. Long distance calling, please.
Granderson much quicker through the zone with a pitcher topping out at 86 mph. Stay tuned.
Lucky them, they have 3 more in KC………..and coming home they won’t get a break from the heat, either.
Rich
I know people are quick to jump on Joba. But much of his struggles was due to bad luck, IMO. I remember one game in particular against the Red Sox earlier this year – the second of a 2 game set in which we blew a 5 run lead. Joba came in and gave up bloops and slowly hit balls that found their way through. He was getting ripped to shreds, but in actuality, little of it was his fault. The only fault I generally have with Joba is when he unnecessarily walks batters.
Have a good night!

===============================
honestly , the man did win 4 championships.
he was an excellent communicator and motivator. But not a great in game and bullpen MGR IMO.
I will never forget 96, when I witness the Yankees won their 1st championship for the 1st time.
This has been a brutal summer.
Last summer it rained everyday. This summer it is 90+ degrees everyday.
I meant 1st time for me
CR9
I don’t buy the bad luck argument, at least not as more than an at the margins explanation.
I think it’s about his inability to consistently repeat his mechanics. When they are good, he’s fine. When they aren’t, he’s not.
I don’t think there should be one 8th inning reliever, yet Girardi kept saying that Joba was his 8th inning guy through repeated big meltdowns.
Stop with the “bad luck” line. You make your own luck in this life.
I’ve never been a big fan of summer because I don’t like heat and humidity, but this is ridiculous. It’s actually nice tonight – if only it could stay like this.
“Stop with the “bad luck” line. You make your own luck in this life.”
Not according to BABIP
I think Girardi should be fired and one of the know it all idiots here should take his place after having his name drawn out of a hat. Just like the recent drawing here for autographed baseballs.
On another note, credit to those who didn’t agree that it was time to flush Curtis Granderson down the toilet! I believe it was Tar who said it was not too late for Curtis to figure it out.
I hope that these things will find a way to temper those posters who are quick to want to banish players who don’t meet their expectations. Tomorrow is a new day. And look what Granderson was able to do with the help of Kevin Long!
1. He’s ours
2. He’s definitely trying and not making excuses
3. His defense has helped us out this season
4. He’s ours
We need to circle the wagon for our players, not pick up bows and arrows and start firing blindly! Yankee players are our friends, not the enemy.

“Stop with the “bad luck” line. You make your own luck in this life.”
Not according to BABIP
—————————————————–
but isn’t the fundamental argument in BABIP is over a period of time , good luck (bloopers) or bad lucks (searing line drive caught) all evens out due randomization of chance., hence it ultimately says ‘kid if you want to stick around, need talents and make your own luck
Unless your in the Yankees dugout, talking with the players, and getting an insight as to how they are feeling, how can you sit in your home with the A/C on and judge what’s going on in that ballpark?
That heat and humidity was taking it’s tool, and had Joe left CC in, and we lost, then the comments would be going the other way.
A good win, Granderson looked like a little kid getting his first base hit. Good for Granderson, let’s hope he continues to build on this game, the team would be much stronger if he can.
Too many nail biters, makes you sweat even with the A/C blasting.
Long got Granderson’s swing connected. No more flyaway hands. Today only, a quick fix, stay tuned.
Cashmoney,
There were a ton of lean years for the Yankees, but I don’t know exactly how many times the Yankees won the World Series since my first memories, but it was a lot. When CBS owned the Yankees, it was really bad
TOLL – Not tool, dah!

——————————————-
95 was my first time I ever seen Yanks playing in the playoff. (subseq heartbroken) and elation in 96. I am well aware of the Yankees history, It does seem that after 65, Yanks experience quite the lull til 76 , similar to that of 80s i suppose but probably worse because 80s yanks were mostly competitive though never won.
SJ44,
I tend to scoff at things like “the Yankees can’t get #9 batters out”, but at some point it stops being a coincidence..
I’m still not convinced there’s anything significant there but it really is weird. I hope you’re right and Yankee pitchers learn how to get the Willie Bloomquists of the world out!
these men looked pleased w/the work they’ve done on Granderson:

(though I’m not quite sure how Lee Majors plays into it)
Everyone have a good night.
Just got back from the game – I’ll be at the next 3 also. For those who watched from their air conditioned abode, let me tell you – it was HOT out there. BTW, the house radar had CC constantly at 97, reaching 99, so that agrees with an earlier comment regarding the variance with the Yankee gun.
110 pitches from a 300 pound guy under stress from a tight game in that weather would make one very tired, I would think. Also, that last curve from DRob for the K was one great pitch!
BIG AL – I kind of like the nail biters. I wouldn’t want them every single night, but they are part of the challenge and enjoyment of a season.
FanSince1948 – I give you credit. Game or no game, that kind of heat and humidity would never work for me. Give me my A/C and the television and I am a happy camper.
Trish – I was sweating just sitting there. But as we all (I presume) know, being at the park is best – even with all the tech effects and multiple angle slo-mo replays that TV now gives. Having said that, I’m not sure that a night like tonight wouldn’t have been better spent in an A/C’ed home (and I had excellent seats).
