Pettitte at 75 percent in sim game

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 13, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Andy Pettitte threw his sim game today in Tampa, but he felt like he was only able to push off 75 percent.

“He probably needs a little more rest, that’s all,” Joe Girardi said.

Pettitte was able to throw the full 50-pitch session, but he was not 100 percent. He will not begin a rehab assignment as early as expected. He will instead throw another simulated game before possibly pitching in a game. Girardi indicated it’s possible Pettitte will need only one more sim game before rehabbing.

    Just taking all precautions. Relax

  2. Giuseppe Franco August 13th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

    Well, that sucks.

  3. Warning Track Power August 13th, 2010 at 6:23 pm

    not surprised by the news.
factor his age=recovery time will take longer.

  4. Bret The Hitman August 13th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Moseley is fine while we beat up on soft opponents.

  5. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I don’t think age has anything to do with groin injury recovery. They have to be careful with any pitcher with such an injury due to the nature of pushing off a pitching mound.

The only this does is delay his comeback by a week or so and allow the Yankees to bring him back without having to cut one player off the roster before September 1st.

  6. stuckey99 August 13th, 2010 at 6:27 pm

If this pays dividends in Oct, I’m fine with it.

  7. Sweet Swinging Cano August 13th, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Yanks gotta be cautious. They need this guy bad.

  8. Warning Track Power August 13th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

you really believe age is not a factor in his recovery time?
    i beg to differ.

having andy back at 100% will be a great addition to the team.
nothing the team or andy can do at this point but give the groin more time to heal.

MTU, glad you enjoyed it. Here are two more from Billy Cody.

Boy, that’s not good news at all………..Hopefully he’ll come back ok, but there’s no guarantee that he will.

  11. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Swish must really be in bad shape if he’s sitting tonight……I’m surprised more of the players aren’t exhausted given the heat they’ve been playing in

Pettitte threw 50 pitch sim game but still feels something with groin. Rehab start next wk postponed. No new timetable. 8 minutes ago

  13. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

You can beg to differ all you want, but not every injury recovery setback is due to age.

  14. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 6:41 pm

“Swish must really be in bad shape if he’s sitting tonight……I’m surprised more of the players aren’t exhausted given the heat they’ve been playing in”

Not necessarily, they’re in a middle of a long stretch of games without a day off so Girarid has a hot batter with Kearns and giving one of his regulars a day off in the hot August heat.

  15. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:46 pm

I think it’s foolish to discount Texas from the Lee sweepstakes. For all we know, he may absolutely love it there……..and as to the heat, while I would hate to play there, maybe he loves it. Maybe he’s made best friends – maybe he’s found Arlington or thereabouts to be extremely livable. As long as the Rangers have the rights to him, they have the advantage. As to the Yankees being willing to give up Montero, I sincerely doubt Lee has any clue who Montero is and why it was seen as a big deal that they offered him to Seattle.

  16. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Now this 2nd update is bad news; I’m not holding my breath as to Andy’s return – it’s clearly not anytime soon.

  17. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Oops, nevermind – it’s basically what Chad said.

    Craw, that’s true……..

  18. Sweet Swinging Cano August 13th, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Hopefully he just needs more rest. If he has to be out till September so be it. Yankees need him for october.

All this means with Andy is the doctors/trainers were just about correct in their time line, no biggie at all…

You don’t think Derek Braunecker knows who Jesus Montero is or how valuable Montero is?

  22. MTU August 13th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

It good thing Lee isn’t represented by Boras. He would have a field day with this.

    *************************************************************************
unless the K.C. weather changes, count 6 consecutive games played in the extreme heat.
Swisher is only the first of a few regulars that will get a day off.
i won’t count Tex into that mix because he missed two games in texas.

ARod will probably get a day, Jeter should get a day and maybe Cano??

  24. GreenBeret7 August 13th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

MTU, he’s always been a great stage performer…much like as great as their sounds were, Jerry Lee Lewis and Gordon Lightfoot were even better on stage.

No better showman than “The Killer”.

  25. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

CB, I have no idea; why would Lee’s agent care about Montero?

  26. SJ44 August 13th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Texas has no chance in the derby. He’s not signing with Texas.

EVERYBODY in baseball knows who Jesus Montero is….especially agents.

  27. Nick in SF August 13th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

“this very blog freaked out when reports were coming in that Sabathia loved the West Coast and might not be willing to pitch in the cold North East.”

    Not everyone!

  28. BIG AL August 13th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I don’t think it makes a difference that Lee is with Texas now. He wants to be an FA, because he realizes this will be his last big pay day, and his future depends on going with the best offer, and where he’ll feel comfortable.

It’s a given, the Yankees will provide the most money, and he has friends on the Yankees, and he seemed eager to come to NY from the M’s.

Unless Hell freezes over, Lee will be a Yankee next year.

  29. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Warning, it’s a bit cooler in NY – sucks that the Yankees missed this part of the weather schedule.

My point is – why on earth would Lee give a second thought to Montero? Does he follow the minor leagues?

As long as Lee is on the Rangers, they have a shot………..no one knows what Cliff Lee is thinking.

CB, I have no idea; why would Lee’s agent care about Montero?
    —————————————————————————-
Any agent worth his weight surely knows that the NYY’s top prospect in over a decade, with a very special bat, youngest player in AAA has just been offered for his client.

  31. Giuseppe Franco August 13th, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Agents are out to make a lot of money. The good ones know who all the talented players are.

  32. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

I wouldn’t discount Texas, but where Lee pitches next year will depend on the size of the contract.

Also, let’s remember that Texas has no state income tax while NY has one of the highest and combined with the city income tax will be above 12% tax rate. Do the math and figure out how much of Lee’s 20+M a year contract is tax collector bound.

  33. SJ44 August 13th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

    Betsy,

Agents care because they are in the business of signing players. That’s how they make money.

For the record, Montero is tropes by the Levinson Brothers, who are Posada’s agents.

  34. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Ok, that’s fine, but I really do not see how this affects anything. I’m not going to pretend I know how Lee feels ….

  35. Giuseppe Franco August 13th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

It doesn’t make any difference if Texas has the rights to Lee right now. He’s going to be on the open market.

If they don’t have the cash he’s looking for, he’s not going to re-sign with them.

  36. GreenBeret7 August 13th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Good night to follow the young yankee pitching. Nova, DJ Mitchell and Betances are all pitching.

  37. BIG AL August 13th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

    Betsy -

The new owners of the rangers just put up millions more than they thought they’d have to in the auction. I don’t believe they’ll have that much money to spend on one player. The A-Rod contract is still fresh in the minds of the Rangers.

  40. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Don’t discount the new Texas owners as they have partners with deep pockets.

  41. CB August 13th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

“I have no idea; why would Lee’s agent care about Montero?”

    Betsy-

Montero was the single best prospect to come out of Latin America when the Yankee’s signed him. As a 16 year old he had 80 power. You don’t see why one of the top agents in the game might be interested in knowing who he was then and perhaps signing him as a client?

Since then Montero has become one of the 5 best prospect in baseball? You don’t think every agent needs to know who this kid is if only for things like future arbitration comps, free agency, etc?

That’s like saying the agent doesn’ need to understand the industry he’s working in.

Derek Braunecker is not only Lee’s agent he’s AJ Burnett’s agent. He knows what’s going on with the yankees in spring training. For example, who that catcher AJ may be throwing to. He’ll ask AJ what he thinks about the kid, etc.

Derek Braunecker is also Dustin Mosely’s agent. Mosely had a great year in AAA. He threw most of his starts to Jesus Montero. Montero has a poor defensive reputation. I’d guess Derek Braunecker might be interested in knowing if the catcher’s game calling ability might impact his client’s chances for doing well in AAA before Mosely signed with the yanks.

Those would be a few reasons why.

  42. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

SJ44, that’s fine – but Braunecker doesn’t represent Montero. My main point is I don’t see how the fact that the Yankees offered Montero for Lee affects anything. If Lee loves Texas, for whatever reason (and we have no idea what’s in his heart), then Texas has a very good chance to sign him. I’m not saying he will re-sign, but Texas is the only team that has that chance right now; they have a great chance to go deep into the playoffs and they also have excellent young players. That is not an unappealing situation.

  43. Betsy August 13th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

CB, ok……….that’s fine then. How that has anything to do with Lee possibly signing with the Yankees is beyond me, though.

  44. Crawdaddy August 13th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

It’s about the most money, nothing else matters right now.

  45. stuckey99 August 13th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

“He’s not going to do financially better in a closed market where only one team can bid on him compared to an open market where multiple teams can bid on him.”

    Alex Rodriquez says hello.

I believe your zealotry towards the literal definition of auction is leading you astray here.

You’re implying, but seemingly refuse to acknowledge directly, that an “auction” condition could drive Lee’s price up beyond any reasonable ceiling, as well as ignoring Texas, knowing their best shot is signing him before the season ends, could introduce an overwhelming offer out of the gate.

I believe in the history of contract negotiations, even those conducted in a potential auction condition, terms have been reached before bidding began.

You’re utterly discounting the possibility of Lee’s camp getting what they project he’s worth on the upper end, and making the decision not to go to auction.

You’re speaking ignorantly of you are arguing ANY offer Texas could extend WILL be topped, simply due to the offer being the first.

To utterly discount the possibility, when I think in an honest moment you’d acknowledge you don’t expect Lee’s price to rise much – if at all – above Sabathia’s, that Texas could attempt to give him the high-end of what I think many smart people can agree is the ceiling for a player with his resume, is a tad ridiculous.

  46. Doreen August 13th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

    Huh.

    I just finished dinner.

I was going to bring up that one needs to keep in mind what the Yankees were willing to “spend” in a trade for Cliff Lee when trying to guess what they will bid for him in the off-season — only the best hitting prospect they’ve had in years.

No one is discounting the Rangers. Certainly, I am not. But I think it is not an unreasonable position to take that if there is a bidding war, the Yankees will be in it, and are favorites to win such a bidding war. They are not in bankruptcy, for one.

Glad someone bought up Montero as an example of what the Yankees are willing to pay.

Whatever time Pettitte needs, he should take.

As to Girardi. We went to the a Giant game the other night at ATT against the Cubs. We sat in front of a 70-ish guy and his family who are season ticket holders at Wrigley. They want Girardi bad. They are spinning the Yankees non-offer of a contract extenstion as a “dis” to Girardi and think that it may give the Cubs an edge. I disagree, because I think Girardi (a) understands the Yankees policy (Jeter, Mo and Cashman himself did not get extensions); and (b) the chances of winning in Chicago as opposed to the chances of winning in NY??????

But at any rate, they really do WANT Girardi over in the windy city.

  47. CB August 13th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

“that’s fine, but I really do not see how this affects anything. I’m not going to pretend I know how Lee feels ….”

It has nothing to do with knowing what Lee feels.

Lee and his agent already know the Yankees were willing to give up an enormously valuable commodity for 3 months of Lee.

Montero’s monetary value to the yankees right now for the 6 cost contained years they’d have him could be around 50M.

It’s difficult to find recent cases of a prospect this good being traded.

So what it tells Lee and his agent is that the Yankees want him badly. It’s an index of demand for his services.

And it’s evidence that when Lee enters the market the Yankees will bid on him fiercely.

And btw – no one is “discounting” Texas. This straw man arguments seems to come up here alot. Can’t “discount” Texas for Lee, can’t “discount” the Sox for the division, etc.

But few if anyone ever truly “discounts” anything.

Saying something is unlikely is not discounting it. To equate the two is just rhetoric.

  48. Giuseppe Franco August 13th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Texas hasn’t been a perennial contender. It has always been the Angels in that division.

Maybe Texas will be a playoff contender for years to come. Who knows?

But Lee certainly knows this, the Yanks LOVE him. They have the most money and they are indeed perennial World Series contenders every year and have been since 1996.

And some of his best buddies are in the Yankee rotation.

You can never say anything is a guarantee, but Texas has to overcome some obstacles to sign Lee long term.

  49. Bret The Hitman August 13th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

    It’s quite simple.

If Texas offers Lee, CC Sabathia-money, Lee won’t ever enter free agency in the first place.

  50. Doreen August 13th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

And as far as taxes go, there are ways aroudn that — for one, you negotiate a salary taking taxes into account, and for two, you set up residency in a state that is more “forgiving.”

  51. JS August 13th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

    Betsy-

I’m not sure what you don’t understand? All that’s being said is that Braunecker knows how the Yankees operate. He knows that Cashman is protective of his top prospects. Everyone in the industry knows this.

He also knows that Cashman offered a top 5 prospect for Cliff Lee, which goes against his usual operating procedure. He must really love Lee. If Braunecker is doing his job well, he will most definitely use that as leverage in his negotations.

Now this isn’t a guarantee that Lee will sign with the Yanks, but you’ll be damn sure involved in the bidding for him.

  52. Doreen August 13th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    Bret -

No. It’s not that simple. If Texas offers Lee CC money, Lee’s agent goes to the Yankees and says, “So?” And the Yankees top it. Simple as that.

  53. SJ44 August 13th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

A lot of people know what’s on Lee’s mind.

The worst kept secret in baseball is where he will play next year.

  54. yankee21 August 13th, 2010 at 7:32 pm

What people often forget is it’s in TEX best interests to shout out their interest in LEE and how important they think he is to signing with them long-term. TEX will take advantage of every opportunity to communicate their interest and will go out of way to publicly court him.

This way when Lee decides to go TEX covers their bases and their fan base with hey we did everything we can do but it is impossible to compete with Yankee $$. Then TEX comes across as fully intent on building a winner just the chips didn’t fall their way.

TEX has nothing to lose by saying he is a priority so get used to it until November..
