I’ll call it out until it happens……SWEEP !
I can’t wait to see that 1st AB by Johnny vs Javy.
Flashbacks?
who will get more hits this series, AJax or Curtis….
Scherzer has been pitching well, but if the offense adjusts their approach of putting the ball in play within the first 2 pitches of ABs and actually works the count against him, they could be successful. He throws a lot of pitches and can hand out free passes, so they may be able to get him out of the game by the 5th or 6th inning if they make him work.
Would be nice if Vazquez could turn it around from his last few starts, winning the first game will be a big plus especially since the CC/Verlander game can go either way (but should be extremely entertaining, hopefully).

Part joking, part sarcasm and a little bit of realism mixed in too.
On any day, any pitcher can shut down any team.
The guys I listed are pretty good hitters and did get shut down by Bullington on the day he faced them.
I have a hard time believing that the guys who make $40-60ks per at bat were happy with the results in the first 4 innings and packed it in for the day.
====================================
My point was that nothing fazed Damatsui.
Of course these guys weren’t happy, my question is where is the leadership on the team?
Both of them were great leaders, Jeter loved Matsui as a ballplayer and a man, a no-nonsense guy.
Damon had ice water in his veins.
Their influence is missed as much as their bats, maybe more.

When I first went to the link, I expected a short take, but it was really, really in depth. That piece has been a work in progress for a while, I suspect, so I fear we can take no credit for giving him the idea.

Off-topic. I was just going through our vacation pictures, and we had gone to the LA vs. Padres game (the one where the catcher got hurt) and I was snapping photos during SD batting practice and a big guy came out and I think it was Dave Winfield. The size and body type made me think it was him immediately, but the one picture I have of his face, I’m not sure. I can’t think of anyone else it could be, since he was a Padre and since just about everyone was coming up to him and shaking his hand and there aren’t too many guys built like Dave Winfield. Maybe it’s just that his face is a little fuller? What do you think?

Morning, rodg. all is well here, although it appears that I now have some jack ass that thinks he’s clever by posting my name. I just sent emails and this clown will be gone.
Other than that, it’s been a little of a downer with the yanks struggling and not clicking on all cylanders. How are things your way?
—————————————————-
Impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery. Or, something like that.
Things are pretty good here. Had a good trip to KC to watch the Yanks. I got ARod’s autograph on
———————————————————————————————————————-
Rodg, that sounds like a trip well worth the time. I’ve seen bad games before, but, never had a bad time going to see them. Great timing on the Rodriguez homers and scoring on the autograph.
Sorry about the passing of Old Blue, but, that’s a long life and a lot of rabbits tracked. Maybe a few cats scared off too.
yup, that is dave winfield

Nothing better than winning tickets to something. My daughter won 4 tickets to see Tim McGraw front row center this past spring.
Talking about tickets, finally SWB is coming to Columbus. Going to see them Weds and Friday for sure Tuesday up in the air and Thursday taking my youngest daughter to her move in to become a Toledo Rocket. The night before she leaves she wants to spend it with her old man at the ball game.
Mick, I get the love affair with Matsui/Damon. Personally, Matsui is one of my all time favorite Yankees. The guy was just pure class on and off the field. That being said, I never saw either guy as a team leader. They certainly had intangible qualities you need to create good chemistry, but I never thought of either player as a leader. That job, to me anyway, falls on guys like Mo, Posada, Jeter, and Girardi. I do wish we had been able to keep one or the other, but it just didn’t work out that way and we’ve got to use the players we have.

Great pix of Wifield, Doreen. Hard to belive that he’s almost 60 years old, huh? Him and Guidry. As far as that article. I still think that we should take credit for the article. Give “the writer” a little credit for helping to flesh it out, though. He deserves something.
Thanks Pat. But would fans only realize and remember that.
On any day, any pitcher can shut down any team. They didn’t make it to the majors because they don’t know how to pitch. And there’s just no telling how much a decent pitching coach (or a first-place team) can motivate a pitcher.
Are you really still posting about Damon and Matsui? That horse has not completely turned to dust from being absolutely pounded to death for the past 7 or 8 months?! The offense had games like yesterday even with the apparently near-godly abilities of the gritty, grinding tough-nosed otherworldly veterans Damon and Matsui in the lineup. I see no point in still talking about them because they aren’t doing anything to help the Yankees in 2010.
“howe farr” is 1 clever moniker
Doreen
Looks like Winfield to me.
Burn’s 10th Inning is coming out this fall. Should be interesting.
This is a big series especially after yesterday’s disappointment.
The Yankee hitters did an awful job yesterday. They allowed that draft flop to dictate the pace of the game and didn’t force him to work hard at all.
As an aside, Scherzer is on my fantasy team and he is a two-start pitcher this week (big in head-to-head fantasy baseball) but I am sitting him because he’s pitching against the Yanks.
Loyal in every aspect!
Each guy contributes in their own way and that constitutes a team.
Take away parts and they need to be replaced.
Can you honestly say that what we picked up in the offseason is better than what we had last year?
Bob-the good ole days of Howe and Farr
I see no point in still talking about them because they aren’t doing anything to help the Yankees in 2010.

Then you don’t have to participate.

But one good day also doesn’t make a pitcher good- Lightning in a bottle so to speak.
My first pets-two gold fish I won at some church fair were-were named Dave and Winfield.
I won them in May and they died in October, coincidence?

Howe and Farr, man did they pitch on some horrendous Yankee teams.

Nice… Front row center is amazing.
A dumb usher at a Fleetwood Mac concert once misread my ticket and put me front row center. I was standing directly underneath Lindsey Buckingham for the first 2/3 of the show. Sadly, the mistake got discovered and we got booted, but still… awesome experience
Bob, that is why i try not to complain about the current yankees

This comment definitely ages you to be the same age as me. My rookie baseball card for little league lists Dave Winfield as my favorite player.
There’s absolutely no reason why the Yankees can’t take 3 of 4 in the Detroit series. Anything less calls for a gut check.
Detroit is 3 games under .500 and out of the Central Division race. They have a 19-36 road record.
Cliff Lee besting David Price tonight will be helpful.
Tough decision by Gardenhire to pull Kevin slowey yesterday after 7 innings of no-hit ball. He was at 105 pitches, so maybe he doesn’t get there. But, I would have let him go batter to batter in the 8th inning at least.
pat, that may be the case. Or maybe he’s a good pitcher who will now find his promise.
He was certainly good enough to shut down the Yankees.
I still think that someone who was the top draft pick might still have something to offer. It doesn’t matter how many teams someone has played for (someone pointed out earlier he’s been on 4 teams).
*************************
For the sake of argument, let’s stay with the lightning in a bottle theory. That happens. It happened. It’s not unheard of – except for some posters here who cannot accept anything but what they expect to happen.
SJ gets the Veruca Salt award. He just can’t let it go and accept that on any given day any pitcher can shut down another team! Cripes, get over it and move on!
I wish we never traded Al Leiter back then. What a mistake !
“As an aside, Scherzer is on my fantasy team and he is a two-start pitcher this week (big in head-to-head fantasy baseball) but I am sitting him because he’s pitching against the Yanks.”
I’ve got Scherzer and Vazquez on mine. I’m definitely going to go ahead and start Scherzer, who could have a good day while still losing. I’m actually a little iffy on starting Vazquez.

I take the non-response as a definitive “NO”
Yanks-Tigers tonight. Some good story lines. Damon and Jackson coming to Yankee stadium. Hopefully maybe get a little run going.
Lee vs Price tonight should be worth paying attention to. Come on Cliffy.
mick – I won’t have an opinion on whether this team is better or worse until we’re playing in the finals. If we win it all, I’ll say they were about even
JCPD-
I sent you an e-mail.
“Take away parts and they need to be replaced.”
Technically Swisher/Cano replaced Damon/Matsui in the line-up and they’re having pretty good years.
Gratitude has nothing to do with it.
I am appreciative of what they did during their time with the Yankees but Damon and Matsui’s moms had an easier time cutting the umbilical cord than some fans do.

That is tough. Noticed that previous to yesterday, Slowey’s last start was on 8/5. Obviously he was skipped for some reason. Wonder whether it was an injury/tired arm and Gardenhire was going to cap him at 100 or so no matter what?
Yup, I’m 30 years old. I liked Winfield because he hit a home run at the very first Yankee game I went to.
Thanks, guys. I thought it was him. GB7 – he sure does look great!
GB
Slowey had elbow issues prior to this start. I feel for him losing the opportunity and Gardenhire having to make the decision to pull him but it was a big picture decision and the right one IMO.
mick you are looking pretty classy here so far, keep digging I’m sure that will help make your point, perhaps come up with some other insults as well, that is always a plus.
The moves that were made in the offseason all made sense when compared to the flipside of caving to Damon’s demands and paying him for 2 years at a salary above the $8 mill he signed for. Granderson has been a disappointment but that move was not made knowing that he would struggle as much as he has. While he’s been a disappointment offensively he has still played stellar defense, something that would not have come with Damon at all, and he has contributed to wins, albeit much less than most people expected.
Johnson was a whiff, but when he was signed he was going to be an ideal #2 hitter in the lineup and would only require a 1 year deal, content to DH only. Matsui jumped at an offer from the Angels which also gave him a chance to play LF, and has experienced an extremely up and down season for them. Just because he’s been playing all year, signing him looks better than NJ, but looking back I supported that signing and it would have worked out really well if Johnson wasn’t made of glass. That said their offense is still as good as it was last year and I think while they looked real bad yesterday, they will not look real bad at crunch time, as hard as that may be to believe since the magical bats of last year are missing.
“I wish we never traded Al Leiter back then. What a mistake !”
The week of the Boss’s passing the MLB network was talking about the late 80s Yankees and how Mr. Steinbrenner traded away a lot of young talent. As they were talking Al Leiter walked behind them and waved to the camera.

MTU,
Nothing yet, but maybe the e-mail truck doesn’t get here until the afternoon like the regular one.
Can I say something ridiculous? I got 4 fish this year….fancy tropical fish, and of course named them Mo, Derek, Jorge, and Andy. Andy has been dead for about a month, and the rest are still alive. Scary. Andy died about 3 days before Pettitte pulled his groin. If Mo dies, I may go with him.
JCPD,
Your pictures are awesome. I paint a little and you and MTU have given me lots of great choices for the coming season. I don’t know how to save that link though. See I am a computer retard.
Thanks again

Hilarious ! Well, if we got anything out of Al it was that big game he pitched in Boston a handful of years ago when the Yankees needed another starter for that series.
Erica,
My birthday is in December also…the 9th.
30 wasn’t bad. My GF did, and still does, give me ‘Just for Men’ hair dye. I tell her the grey hair gives me a sense of gravitas. I’ve never used it.
Wasn’t aware of issues with Slowey’s elbow. He’s a good young pitcher, about the same type of pitcher as Matt Garza. They came up together through the system and were the Twins 1 and 2 in the 2005 draft. slowey has had some injuries, though.

LOL….
I had a good laugh last week about that. I was at a client and a woman here told me that sh eloves my hair color. I looked at her like she was insane and said “oh you mean my full of chlorine bleached and prematurely grey combination???” LOL
SAS,
Glad you liked them and glad you have lots of choices now. I guess you’ll just have to retype the address whenever you want to go back to it or you can e-mail me at Nikkel1011@aol.com and I’ll send it to you.
Can’t wait to see Damon tonight. I hope he gets a rousing cheer!
I miss the guy. Total gamer.
JCPD-
It was slow the last time too. I just did a resend.
Give Damon and Jackson a big cheer and strike ‘em out four times each, along with Cabrera and Boesch.
GoldGlove, you make sure you feed and care for those fish every day. Every. Day.
Erica, Yeah, my students are always shocked when I tell them my age. They equate grey hair with being old. Oddly enough, whenever I try to grow facial hair it comes in red. I say it’s odd because I have jet black hair. I once grew a beard and looked like some sort of lunatic.
You got it Mr. Spencer. I keep a close eye on them.
Damon was a gamer. Many 9, 10, 11 pitch at bats. Foulball after foulball after foulball. Who does that for us now?
NY Times Blog raises an interesting question, how do you judge offensive productivity?
Girardi says he judges it as runs scored + RBI. He puts the number as 200 total to call a players season productive and doesn’t get caught up in how it is reached.

Granderson! LOL
You know Michael Kay will just have to remind us viewers tonight that Damon faced Javy before and Damon hit a Grand slam etc etc etc ugh as if nobody in tv land knows.
Oh a gamer, but is he a gritster? Does he chew nails?! By the way Gardner is the one replacing Damon’s at bats and playing time in LF. Damon this year averages 4.07 pitches per plate appearance, Gardner 4.62. I guess Brett’s long at bats don’t really count though, since he’s apparently not a gamer.
Gardy ! Yes he came to mind immediately after I posted that but I did not know the numbers. Way to go Brett !!
Damon always had a flair for the dramatic. I bet he hits a home run tonight.
He also owns Javy (who doesn’t?). I remember him hitting two HRs in one game against him during the ’04 regular season.

Can I make a suggestion? Go out and buy 20 or so of those feeder fish that are like 2000 to a tank, with like 25% of them already dead. Name them Evan (as in Longoria), Price (David), Matt, Shieldsy, Crawford, Papi, Lester, Vic and Clay among other names. Come 2nd week of October go out and buy 20 more and name them Cliff, Joshy, Murph, Cruzy, Neftali and/or Buerhle, Pauly, Gavin, Mauer, Kubel, Justin, and (gulp) Carl – no need to call any of them Jenksie, Rauchy or even Cappsie
Bob -
Ugh! Gonna have to either mute the tv or not watch.
“Girardi says he judges it as runs scored + RBI. He puts the number as 200 total to call a players season productive and doesn’t get caught up in how it is reached.”
Seems a little too simplistic, no? As an example, Swisher is on pace to come up a little light of 200. Has his season been anything other than productive? Swisher and Jeter are in a virtual tie. Does anyone believe Swisher hasn’t been the more productive offensiver player this year? Brett Gardner won’t come anywhere close, but stands an excellent chance at 100 runs as a #9 hitter who is on base 38% of the time. Unproductive?
Erica and SAS – December also. Mine’s the 13th.
And no, I wasn’t born on a Friday!

Run production? Who would have thunk it that runs results in wins? And all along, I thought it was about win shares and WAR.
The Tigers may have been struggling lately but the pitching matchups look pretty equal to me, at least on paper. Given that we lost a complete mismatch yesterday (Burnett vs. Bullington) perhaps that is just as well. The Tigers were still good enough to score 13 runs away to the ChiSox yesterday so unless some of our missing batters show up (yes, I’m talking about you Swish, Robby and Derek doubleplay) then it’s going to be another frustrating week. You can bet your bottom dollar that Johnny D, Jacko and Cokey will be out to put one over their old chums.
Bill D
Girardi called +200 a “strong season” of productivity. I would imagine numbers under 200 would be considered various degrees of productive less than strong- good, average, weak, etc…… but it probably has different interpretations depending on the individual player.
