The under/over for runs scored is 0.

Rodg, Zaun is history. I think he has a torn labrum or elbow ligament. As far as another catcher, I was hoping that NYYs picked up John Buck two years ago. He won’t hit .290 or .300, but he can catch and throw and give you 15 or more homers.
    ———————————————————–
Didn’t know Zaun’s injury was that bad, GB. Thanks for the info. I know you’ve been talking Buck for a while now. One of the reasons I threw his name out there. I think he’d be a good get in the offseason. Add some RH pop to the line-up and allow Jorge to catch less and (hopefully) be more effective when he does.

  3. Niblick August 17th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

    #Rich: I’ll take the under.

Yes…. but we are holding out hope that Montero will be the other catcher in 2010. I still would like to see POsada move to full time dh, bring montero up and still get Buck. Then You have three catchers, and Posada less likely to get hurt.

He wont be happy, but if you tell him this is how it is, he can use the offseason to mentally prepare for full time DH.

I say Yankees light it up for 7 runs tonight.

I didn’t see that. When did it happen?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

CB, unless I mis read it, about a month ago. My typing isn’t much, but I read fairly well. I’ll try to find it and post it.

I’ll feel like a fool if I find out that it was Paula Zaun.

  9. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

And with Gardner leading off in front of jeter, he better take second the moment he steps on first. Stay out of DPs.

  10. RSM August 17th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I know many here will be happy about Jeter dropping to second in the line up, but I think it’s a mistake. It just increases the amount of double play opportunities for Jeter.

g.love – “If they’re not and you’ve traded Montero who is the DH then? Where is the offense coming from?”

It better be from who you traded montero for. Otherwise this conversation is pointless.

The player we are talking about trading montero for is not some scrub.

Montero’s success is also not a guaranteed thing, like you guys are treating it. If you can acquire 1 or 2 established major league players that are going to start in positions of need for the next 4-5 years (ss, 3b, of, sp), then that is absolutely the higher value move, rather than letting a “prospect” lock up your DH slot for the next 5 years who may never develop at the major league level..

Ledger_Yankees ARod still a little sore. After going through treatment today, Girardi will decide if he’s a PH option

Ledger_Yankees Hughes won’t be getting skipped in the Yanks’ long stretch

AC, I’m hoping for that three-man C group too. Only, I think it would be Posada/Buck splitting the majority of time at C with Montero at DH most of the time (with some C sprinkled in).

Hoping with Pena 9th and Gardner 1st, that they will steal if they get on and not let jeter have the doubple play opp…

Jeter isnt an idiot, he has to see what is going on. Try Bunt singles maybe? I dont know. I am stunned that we are having this discussion about Jeter. After .337 last year, i wouldn’t have guessed he would have fallen this far, even if he is injured.

Maybe…. but posada is such a health risk behind the plate now, that i dont think he should be splitting 50/50 or 60/40 with buck or anyone. It is important to keep him in the lineup.

  25. da Rican August 17th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

No winners on GTLU, I am willing to bet.

But your never going to get this kind of return for montero.

Jack Z essentially decided to trade Montero for Smoak because monero doesn’t have a set position.

And what positions do the yankees have “open” over the next two years?

Jeter will be back playing SS next season. ARod will still be here at 3b.

The Yankees are running out of positions. They only ones potentially open are DH, catcher and possibly one OF spot.

At some point the yankees best allocation of resources will be to put a plus bat at DH. All of the other positions are spoken for.

  27. SJ44 August 17th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

I doubt you will see a three man catching rotation.

That messes up your pitching staff. Pitchers have a hard time adjusting to that many catchers.

They will have to make a call in the off-season as to who stays and who goes because a 3 man catching rotation is very unlikely to take place in NY.

  28. The Mets are Pond Scum August 17th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

    SJ44 August 17th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Well, considering I raised a nephew who was a first round draft pick as a catcher, and I am involved daily in his development, I think I can speak fairly intelligently on this subject.

I know how teams develop catchers and what they look for.

In particular, I know intimately what the Yankees want, and how they choose to develop, their catchers.

One advantage Cervelli had was that he caught a lot of the regular starting pitchers in ST last year. Montero has not. That matters.

Jesus Montero is a below average defensive catcher.

They aren’t looking to “teach him” how to catch at the ML level in the middle of the pennant race.

He’s not the answer to the Yankees problems.
    ——————————————————————

It seems odd that such an important man in baseball should spend so much of his time on a silly fan blog. Do you keep an exact count of your meeting times for name-dropping purposes in cocktail party conversations?

  29. Doreen August 17th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I’m sure all you GTLU-ers already know, but there was no correct lineup submitted today.

  30. pat August 17th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

    Detroit
Jackson CF, Santiago 2B, Damon DH, Cabrera 1B, Peralta SS, Raburn LF, Inge 3B, Boesch RF, Laird C.

  32. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Not hoping for a rotation. Hoping Posada will DH and catch only from time to time.

  33. GreenBeret7 August 17th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

NYYs dida great job being able to sign their first 13 draft picks amd 16 of the first 17. Cito Culver and Kyle “Holy” Roller are having very good starts.

  34. G. Love August 17th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

    ID,

You’ll never get 2 quality major league players for Montero. You might be able to get an all star but you would also have to add other prospects to the mix with Montero.

The genius in keeping Montero is you are one step (albeit the most important step) away from developing the kind of bat every team in the league wishes they can develop.

If he flops, he flops. If he rakes, he’s our cleanup hitter of the future. He’s on the doorstep.

  35. Doreen August 17th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

I don’t see any difference in batting Jeter 2nd here. He’s still following Gardner, except for his very first at-bat.

It actually increases the opportunity to GIDP by 1, if you worry about such things, doesn’t it?

  36. pat August 17th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

YankeesWFAN Yogi Berra is here today. 1st time since his fall last month. Walking with a cane, but looks good. Welcome home Yogi!

  37. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I really think we should leave left field open for Laird/Curtis/etc….

Bringing Crawford in blocks yet another position. He have guys that can hit in AAA.

  38. SJ44 August 17th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

    The joys of semi-retired life.

Hopefully, you will have the same opportunity one day.

Actually, you do keep a pre-draft log of meetings, and what’s said in them.

    It helps during contract negotiations.

    Thanks for asking.

The Mets are Pond Scum just getting owned in this and the previous thread. Run away, scum.

  40. Irreverent Discourse August 17th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

g.love – “never” is a big word. we almost got the best left handed pitcher in the game… i’d say 2 ML ready bats aren’t that absurd at all. having to add “other prospects” is not really a concern…

  41. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:44 pm

As for Jeter: I refuse to believe this is what we will get from Jeter moving forward. Something has to be wrong with him. He can’t get the ball in the air at all. There is no way he is too old to hit .300 or above.

I almost wish they would figure out if he is hurt, put him onthe DL to rest for the stretch, and bring up Nunez or something, because we need Jeter to be Jeter, and this is not it.

  42. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Montero will have a place on this team, but Romine is the catcher of the future.

  43. ac1 August 17th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

  44. Irreverent Discourse August 17th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I guess D-Rob is going to be on call as PH/RF in case Swisher’s arm is still sore? Don’t know how much power he would hit for, not blessed with great size. Hopefully Andy can push off a little closer to 100% this time.

Among AL pitchers who have thrown 2000 or more pitches this year (there are 46 of them), Sabathia ranks as the 5th most efficient, throwing 15.08 pitches per inning (trails only Hernandez 15.05, Neiman at 14.60 , American Idle’s 14.07, and Cliff Lee’s ridiculous 13.41). Verlander averages 17 per inning.

Who you think last longer tonight?

Make Verlander work and get to him early (4.69 ERA in innings 1-3, 2.37 in innings 4-7).

As a Jays fan I can tell some of you are thinking well with the Buck idea, I think he’d be a great fit in your bandbox of a stadium and his defense would actually represent an upgrade on Posada despite the fact it isn’t all that great (although he’s gotten better at throwing out runners as the season has progressed). The 3 Cs idea can definitely work as Scioscia is showing in LAA, especially once you accept the fact that Posada is pretty much the everyday DH as opposed to trying to stash him behind the plate. After the Yankees are done signing Carl Crawford that would leave a bench of Gardner, Pena, Cervelli, and an old thumper bat, which would be a bench capable of filling in well for any injury/day off.

    - loved the ovation he got in his first AB. Wanted it to last longer but Cervelli kept trying to get Vasquez to throw a pitch.

-NY was his favorite place he’s ever played. “way more than Boston”

-regarding last winter…all he wanted was two years and the negociation time with the Yankees was about 10 minutes (there were a lot of pauses and uhms during this part of the interview).

-he thought the Yankees would be better with him on the team.

  69. Yankee Trader August 17th, 2010 at 5:35 pm

A-Rod, CC, Tex, Burnett, Posada, Cano, Swisher, Granderson, Marte- 9 players owed a total of 135.1M next season.

Let’s say Mo resigns for 15M, same as 2010, Jeter takes a pay cut to 18M, Pettitte decides to return for the same 11.75M. Now you’re at 179.85M, or almost 2 million of the new luxury tax threshold of 178M for 2011.

Now you have 12 players signed. OK now you add Lee to replace Vazquez who’s not offered arbitration, and you have to outbid Texas, even though you know it’s a 40% tax hike. No other pitcher since 1900, per Buster Olney, has had the strikeout to walks ratio that he’s had. Let’s say 22M, maybe more if he leads them to the promised land.

Now your at 201.85M for 13 players.

    Need contracts for the others.

How aggressive do you think the Yankees will be in the offseason to go for the likes of a Werth, or Crawford, or another pitcher to start if Pettitte doesn’t come back??

Maybe Boras will advise A-Rod to defer some of his money to add another righthanded power hitter to the lineup!! :)

  70. djdj22 August 17th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

The yankees lineup is best with gardner leading off and jeter 2nd. You get Gardners speed at the top and it adds length to the whole lineup….

  71. Drivenbyjeter2 August 17th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I REALLY like the look of this lineup. So much better with Gardner batting lead off…

I would rather have Jeter bat 6 or 7, but that’s not gonna happen (Swisher was better at #2)
