Berkman not listed on the Yankees bench

Alex Rodriguez is listed as a player off the bench. Lance Berkman is not. Berkman to the DL could be the move for Eduardo Nunez.

UPDATE, 10:54 am: Berkman gave no indication that he’s been placed on the DL, but he did say going on the DL is a possibility because the team is short on the bench. He said he feels like he could run, but the training staff wants him to take it slow.
any bets that gardner stays leadoff once everyone is healthy again?
I’m pleasantly surprised that both Pena and Cervelli aren’t in the lineup.

Yeah, I’m surprised too. I thought that he was having trouble with his knee. I hope they aren’t overusing him…I’d hate to see him miss time later (because of the kneee) when he might really be needed.

I wonder if the Yankees are losing faith in Cervelli. Usually, Jorge doesn’t play a day game after a night game. Cervelli has really been stinking up the joint here lately, on both offense and defense.
Cant really give derek a day off until alex comes back. Although it would be interesting to see pena play 3B and SS at the same time…
Berkman’s lucky that it wasn’t a broken ankle and Bullington’s lucky that he didn’t tear or rupture his achilles tendon.

Posada played last week in a day game after a night game. Girardi seems to be sticking to the formula that Posada catches CC, Moseley and Hughes and Cisco catches AJ and Javy.

DET needs to make up their mind. One minute, Leyland says that Gardner’s play wasn’t dirty. Now everyone else is saying that it was. If Damon was playing for us, I’m sure he’d be backing up Gardner. He’s just bonding with his DET teammates.

It seems to me that this is going to be part of a series of moves including reactivating Aceves leading up to the Sept. 1st expansions. The big question seems to be whether or not Andy rejoins before Sept.1. Ace seems to be ready now, but do you DFA Gaudin or simply option Nunez back down in a few days when Arod is healthy. Berkman will not be back before Sept. 1 if he goes on DL. And then there is the whole Marte factor. Logan is not going back down, so who do you get rid of for Marte. Or do you just wait for Sept 1 for him?
Hey, the Rays have won five in a row and the Sox will almost certainly complete a sweep of the hapless Angels tonight. It’s a long time since the Yanks have won a series. This is a game we need to win today and that is reflected in Joe G’s lineup. With Pena subbing for A-Rod, we can’t afford to be without Posada’s bat. I’m just hoping that the bad feeling from last night’s game doesn’t spill over into today as someone is going to get seriously hurt. However, I fear it will.
Aceves just pitched two plus innings, so it’s doubtful they’ll have him pitching again within the next 2-3 days.

If I had to guess, I’d guess that Johnny is just saying what the mood is in the Tiger clubhouse.
Think about it – their losing a lot lately, seeing their season potentially down the drain, and one of their buddies – one of their better players, to boot – just got taken out and sent to the DL. THey’re probably not in a good mood.
Leyland’s been around long enough to know it was a clean play, but to maintain his team, approved Bonderman going after Brett on the first pitch. Leyland probably thought that would be it.
Joe didn’t look too perturbed in the bottom of the first, either. They’re both old school baseball, and figured it would end. They probably had no idea the home plate ump would make such a mess out of it.
My guess is that it’s over.

There was a lot of smiles and hugs Monday during batting practice between Damon and his former teammates. It will be interesting to see if there’s a chill in the air today.

Since Berkman last played Sunday the earliest he could be back is the 30th? I assume they will wait until the rosters expand to activate him, which would be okay. Hopefully that’s ample time for the swelling and soreness to subside. I still can see him making an impact in the big mid-September games on the schedule. Although this definitely allows Joe to keep using Kearns, who has swung the bat really well in his limited time in NY.

Why is posada catching a day game after a night game? Hes a 39 year old catcher who has been injured often the last few years, and he has been in a slump. It’s not like this is a must win game….
Is this a likely scenario: Nunez plays SS tomorrow to give Jeter a day. Aceves comes back Saturday/Sunday for Nunez. Berkman comes back with Sept 1 call-ups.
