Berkman not listed on the Yankees bench

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 19, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Alex Rodriguez is listed as a player off the bench. Lance Berkman is not. Berkman to the DL could be the move for Eduardo Nunez.

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada C
Curtis Granderson CF
Austin Kearns DH
Ramiro Pena 3B

UPDATE, 10:54 am: Berkman gave no indication that he’s been placed on the DL, but he did say going on the DL is a possibility because the team is short on the bench. He said he feels like he could run, but the training staff wants him to take it slow.

any bets that gardner stays leadoff once everyone is healthy again?

  2. CountryClub August 19th, 2010 at 10:55 am

I’m pleasantly surprised that both Pena and Cervelli aren’t in the lineup.

  3. rodg12 August 19th, 2010 at 10:55 am

Surprised Jorge’s catching a day game after a night game. Glad that he is though. Need his bat in there with Pena having to play 3B.

  4. CR9 August 19th, 2010 at 10:55 am

Whew! I like Berkmania, but THANK GOD it aint AROD!

  5. Erin August 19th, 2010 at 10:56 am

Not that I’m happy that Berkman is going on the DL, but I have to say I’m thrilled it’s not Alex.

  6. Mike_Boston August 19th, 2010 at 10:56 am

    Amen to that CR9!!

Ledger_Yankees Berkman says his ankle is still swollen, figured dl was possible. Trainers won’t allow him to run.

jorge 3 days in a row. day after a night also. the guy is 39..

    wow…cervelli is not good……

  12. PagsandRags August 19th, 2010 at 10:59 am

Surprised that Posada is playing a day game after a night game. I’m also surprised Derek isn’t being given a day off. Maybe over the weekend he’ll get one.

  13. El Duque August 19th, 2010 at 11:00 am

Don´t be so rude to Cisco! He´s the best Backup in the MLB!

    Rodg12,
Yeah, I’m surprised too. I thought that he was having trouble with his knee. I hope they aren’t overusing him…I’d hate to see him miss time later (because of the kneee) when he might really be needed.

  15. pat August 19th, 2010 at 11:01 am

retweet about it not being Alex DLed

I wonder if the Yankees are losing faith in Cervelli. Usually, Jorge doesn’t play a day game after a night game. Cervelli has really been stinking up the joint here lately, on both offense and defense.

  17. NYY626 - Andy in 2011 August 19th, 2010 at 11:02 am

Cant really give derek a day off until alex comes back. Although it would be interesting to see pena play 3B and SS at the same time… ;)

  18. GreenBeret7 August 19th, 2010 at 11:02 am

Berkman’s lucky that it wasn’t a broken ankle and Bullington’s lucky that he didn’t tear or rupture his achilles tendon.

  19. Erica in NY August 19th, 2010 at 11:03 am

Kearns DH…. who guessed that one?!?!

  20. Erin August 19th, 2010 at 11:04 am

Posada played last week in a day game after a night game. Girardi seems to be sticking to the formula that Posada catches CC, Moseley and Hughes and Cisco catches AJ and Javy.

As soon as AA shows he’s healthy again it’s back to the bayou for Gaudin. ;)

  26. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 19th, 2010 at 11:06 am

“Posada catches CC, Moseley and Hughes and Cisco catches AJ and Javy.”

Continuing the urban legend that AJ doesn’t want to pitch to Jorge. Ugh.

  27. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 19th, 2010 at 11:09 am

DET needs to make up their mind. One minute, Leyland says that Gardner’s play wasn’t dirty. Now everyone else is saying that it was. If Damon was playing for us, I’m sure he’d be backing up Gardner. He’s just bonding with his DET teammates.

  28. pat August 19th, 2010 at 11:10 am

“As soon as AA shows he?s healthy again it?s back to the bayou for Gaudin.

Aceves is in the clubhouse. There may be a DFA and a DL today.

  29. TheStraw August 19th, 2010 at 11:11 am

It seems to me that this is going to be part of a series of moves including reactivating Aceves leading up to the Sept. 1st expansions. The big question seems to be whether or not Andy rejoins before Sept.1. Ace seems to be ready now, but do you DFA Gaudin or simply option Nunez back down in a few days when Arod is healthy. Berkman will not be back before Sept. 1 if he goes on DL. And then there is the whole Marte factor. Logan is not going back down, so who do you get rid of for Marte. Or do you just wait for Sept 1 for him?

  30. bruceb August 19th, 2010 at 11:12 am

Hey, the Rays have won five in a row and the Sox will almost certainly complete a sweep of the hapless Angels tonight. It’s a long time since the Yanks have won a series. This is a game we need to win today and that is reflected in Joe G’s lineup. With Pena subbing for A-Rod, we can’t afford to be without Posada’s bat. I’m just hoping that the bad feeling from last night’s game doesn’t spill over into today as someone is going to get seriously hurt. However, I fear it will.

  31. GreenBeret7 August 19th, 2010 at 11:12 am

Aceves just pitched two plus innings, so it’s doubtful they’ll have him pitching again within the next 2-3 days.

  32. pat August 19th, 2010 at 11:13 am

NYPost_Kernan Berkman said his ankle would be fine – if a Doberman were chasing him.

  33. MTU August 19th, 2010 at 11:14 am

Sorry Erica. I hate to have to say this but Johnny D has crashed into one too many walls if he thinks GGBG did anything wrong yesterday.

When he speaks it’s not exactly pearls of wisdom that come out of his mouth.

  34. Doreen August 19th, 2010 at 11:17 am

    As might be expected,

There are no matching lineups in today’s GTLU.

  36. Joe from Long Island August 19th, 2010 at 11:20 am

If I had to guess, I’d guess that Johnny is just saying what the mood is in the Tiger clubhouse.

Think about it – their losing a lot lately, seeing their season potentially down the drain, and one of their buddies – one of their better players, to boot – just got taken out and sent to the DL. THey’re probably not in a good mood.

Leyland’s been around long enough to know it was a clean play, but to maintain his team, approved Bonderman going after Brett on the first pitch. Leyland probably thought that would be it.

Joe didn’t look too perturbed in the bottom of the first, either. They’re both old school baseball, and figured it would end. They probably had no idea the home plate ump would make such a mess out of it.

My guess is that it’s over.

  37. upstate kate August 19th, 2010 at 11:20 am

thanks for hosting anyway Doreen. I like thinking about the possibilities and checking out the match ups.

  38. MTU August 19th, 2010 at 11:22 am

    Joe-

“My guess is that it’s over.”

Yup. For the Tigers, since YMH is gonna shut them down today. :)

  39. mikey487 August 19th, 2010 at 11:24 am

Does DFA in this context mean Dumped for Acevedo?

  40. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 19th, 2010 at 11:25 am

There was a lot of smiles and hugs Monday during batting practice between Damon and his former teammates. It will be interesting to see if there’s a chill in the air today.

  41. MTU August 19th, 2010 at 11:27 am

I want the Yankees to win 3 of the next four. I’ll allow them one loss
against Felix the Great but that’s it. :)

  42. UnKnown August 19th, 2010 at 11:28 am

Glad to see Jorge feeling a lot better. Again 3 games in a row and the all impressive day after a night game.

  43. upstate kate August 19th, 2010 at 11:30 am

hmmm MTU…the game Felix is pitching is the game I am going to see…so, no loss on that one!

  44. UnKnown August 19th, 2010 at 11:30 am

Ha funny thing is I would rather see King Felix then a scrub minor leaguer. Actually that isn’t that funny but it is reality.

  45. MTU August 19th, 2010 at 11:31 am

    Kate-

Whatever you say. 4 straight then. That’s just fine with me. :)

NYPost_Kernan Once the clubbie came and got arod’s uni and took it into back room you knew he was not DL bound, will Berkman return????

  48. Chuck58 August 19th, 2010 at 11:34 am

Laura, I wouldn’t think so. Like Gardy said, if Johnny was in Pinstripes, he’d be crowing about how that slide was hard but clean. He sticks up for his teammates. Nothing personal in it. :-)

  49. Andrew August 19th, 2010 at 11:35 am

Since Berkman last played Sunday the earliest he could be back is the 30th? I assume they will wait until the rosters expand to activate him, which would be okay. Hopefully that’s ample time for the swelling and soreness to subside. I still can see him making an impact in the big mid-September games on the schedule. Although this definitely allows Joe to keep using Kearns, who has swung the bat really well in his limited time in NY.

  50. Chuck58 August 19th, 2010 at 11:35 am

hahahaha! Like there’s anything BUT slow he could run ;-)

  56. djdj22 August 19th, 2010 at 11:45 am

Why is posada catching a day game after a night game? Hes a 39 year old catcher who has been injured often the last few years, and he has been in a slump. It’s not like this is a must win game….

  57. JoeyVegas August 19th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Is this a likely scenario: Nunez plays SS tomorrow to give Jeter a day. Aceves comes back Saturday/Sunday for Nunez. Berkman comes back with Sept 1 call-ups.
