I’m happy to see Alex back, but mad that I didn’t win GTLU. ;)

Bottom of the order doesn’t make me happy, but A-rod returning does. Yay.

  3. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

as long as Kearns is hitting well, the Berkman injury could be fortuitous for the Yankees, Kearns and Berkman (to get a little healthier) but, mostly for Eduardo Nunez. It will allow the Yankees to take a good look at him against the best competition and determine whether or not he’s ready to help the big kids in NY next season.

“We are all products of our environment and it is delusional to think that any of us who have been lucky enough to attend college would have done it without being born into the families we were born into.”

I agree. The outliers are extremely rare.

This is definitely a tug-at-your-heartstrings week. I’ve been watching the Jimmy Fund telethon on NESN and I have to admit that seeing a few Red Sox players (I insist on being respectful of them just when talking about this) interact with these kids who have cancer had me in tears. I have to believe my reverence for baseball plays into it because I think I would have been moved to see any MLB players in their uniforms helping out these children. Seeing a 5-year-old bald little girl and hearing the story of what she’s been through and is still going through absolutely did me in.

Then there was a little boy with the happiest disposition who had just had his last treatment. So Shaw’s market, who made a huge donation in his name, arranged for Bucholz and Wakefield to come in and bring him a birthday cake. His mom (and I) sat there in tears. They don’t know whether he’s out of the woods yet, and that has to be the hardest part.

God bless every person on this earth who does anything to help another.

I think of the players as heroes, but really the recipients of all of this largesse are the true heroes. And there but for the Grace of God…

I’m now going off to kiss a kid or two (well it’s my ni*ce and nephew, but they still count.)

    :)

Nice to see A-rod back. Love seeing Gardy still at the top of the lineup. :)

  6. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

There were no matching lineups in today’s GTLU.

Chuck 58 – you had Alex in there, but as I as typing in the lineup I was shaking my head, because you had him at 3b. I think I read this morning that Cash said he’d first come back as DH.

So Pedroia is going back on the DL

  8. theREALkevin August 20th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

ok, well, the Yankees can’t really do any worse this time against Felix. i mean i guess he could pitch a no hitter but i doubt that. i think they’ll scratch out a couple runs against him tonight. will it be enough? depends on how AJ pitches. hopefully the Yanks will win a crisp, 3-1 game. anything more would be gravy.

Aww…. almost had it! I had Alex at third, and Jorgie DH’ing [with Gardy ninth].
Had a feeling A-Rod would return today :-D

Oh well, maybe Monday [right, Erin?]

Can’t help but think that CC would have even better numbers pitching out west. Bigger parks and weaker teams. He’s not necessarily prone to the long ball, but the extra square footage helps. And pitching a good number of games in the Colliseum. Whew. Pitcher’s dream.

    —————–

Hughes in McAffee would have a sub 2 ERA

  12. The Other Phil August 20th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

The Yanks better pound on King Felix and Jason Vargas. I sat both of them this week! :)

  17. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

It was only rumors distributed by PA that Pedroia was taking grounders on his knees. There is no legitimate way of proving that he was on his knees and not standing. Who would know?

    countryclub,

i hope you’re wrong but i have a feeling you’re right about pettitte. it’s a real shame. he made a mistake, admitted it when he was forced to, and didn’t lie to protect a friend. now he’s gonna be in middle of a media storm.

i hope pettitte will come back for ’11, to hopefully take a run at #29.

Bronx Jeers – Cano really lives with his mom?

  31. Giuseppe Franco August 20th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Pettitte’s already been through the worst part a couple of years ago – with the ST press conference and all.

I don’t see why the Clemens situation would make any decision for him regarding next season if his health holds up and his family still wants him to pitch.

  32. Erin August 20th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Patrick-you’re on a roll today

  34. Patrick August 20th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

What will Pettitte do if he has to testify in this case? Tell the truth and bury his best friend or lie and bury yourself? That’s gotta be tough but we know Pettitte will tell the truth. He’s in a real tough spot with this…

  35. Joe from Long Island August 20th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Cause and effect, for Robbie’s MVP-caliber season?

  36. CountryClub August 20th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Davis has already said that Pettitte’s testimony during the deposition is the main reason that Clemens is being indicted. Other than that, it was he said/he said between Clemens and the trainer. That means that Andy is the star witness. He is not going to want to have to answer questions every day about possibly sending his former best friend and idol to jail.

“Longoria?s contract is one of the stupidest in history but the player couldn?t pass it up.”

Yeah, it has to be the most team-friendly contract ever, doesn’t it? IIRC Tampa really leveraged their ability to manipulate his service time. Nevertheless, it’s just hard to believe how bad his contract is–he’ll make $2M next year, after making less than $1M this year! Overall, 6 years, $17.5M plus three club options well below his market value. Ultimately, Tampa will get 9 years of service for a total investment of less than $50M. Hard to overstate what an advantage it is for Tampa to have an elite player locked up at that rate for so long.

    $3M signing bonus 08:$0.5M, 09:$0.55M, 10:$0.95M, 11:$2M, 12:$4.5M, 13:$6M, 14:$7.5M club option ($3M buyout), 15:$11M club option, 16:$11.5M club option

We don’t know Longoria’s personal situation. Maybe he needed cash for family, or other obligations. The Rays took some risk at the time of the signing, also. It was so early in his ML career, anything could have happened.

Baseball America came out with their weekly Hot Sheet and had Warren #1 and Nova #2. After it’s posted ,they do a chat to discuss the results. this question and answer just echoes what we’ve been saying all day…

Question: I realize you almost never print questions anymore about deserving players who miss the Hot Sheet, but I’ll try anyway. Hector Noesi. Discuss.

Matthew Eddy: You wouldn’t want our list to be Yankees overkill, would you? Noesi had a fine week for Double-A Trenton, going 7 innings while giving up 2 hits and striking out 9 versus no walks. In the end, he just didn’t pitch enough innings or notch enough strikeouts during the week to supplant those pitchers who did make it. But what a year for Yankees pitching prospects, including big steps forward by Warren, Nova, Noesi, Andrew Brackman, Dellin Betances and others who I’m sure chatters will remind me of.

  52. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Doesn’t every player get put on waivers at some point?

    ***

I saw some mention of winter ball earlier. Didn’t Montero play for a Venezuelan league last winter? He got an injury I thought, but I also remember reading that there was a veteran who got all the playing time, too?

  53. kr August 20th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

    From basebalprospectus

Benjamin (Cape Cod, Massachusetts): I’m getting worried, please tell me my Sox still have a better farm system than those boys in Pinstripes.

Kevin Goldstein: I love how worked up Sox and Yankees fans get worked up about the other team’s SYSTEM. For now: Advantage Yankees, sorry.

  54. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Doreen, Montero had about 15 at bats in winter ball last year. He was trying to recover from a mid August hand injury from the 2009 season. Either NY stopped it or he wasn’t healthy enough to play.

  55. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

    GB7 -

    Thanks.

I really thought I remembered reading that there was a vet player who would have gotten most of the playing time anyway, since Montero is so young.

With the AFL, the kids that go, play, don’t they? And there is some control by their teams? While in the international leagues, it’s kind of out of MLB’s control? Except a players MLB team telling him to play or not play (like Robi).

  56. G. Love August 20th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

It’s fascinating to me to see if the Boston media turns on Pedroia for his injury antics.

The guy could have let the injury heal properly and come back to his team and helped them, but instead did almost everything imaginable to undermine the healing process.

I understand it’s a fine line between Willis Reed and what Pedroia did, but he may hurt their chances of making the post season by playing hero to the morons over there.

I know he looks up to Jeter and probably thinks Jeter would gut through this, but Jeter with a broken foot is different than Jeter with a sore hand.

  57. CountryClub August 20th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I know I’ve posted some stuff recently from BA, but don’t get caught up in the professional service’s rankings. Remember, BA had the Sox in the top 5 this yr and the Yanks in the last 5. People around here that follow this stuff knew that was crazy. The Yanks system will be top 15 this off season (probably should be top 10). But if it isnt, who cares?

  58. Philippe in Alexandria August 20th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

    Red Sox Medical Reports (updated):
2B Pedey back on the DL after coming back too soon.
CF Cameron back on the DL after coming back too soon.
LF Ellsbury back on the DL after coming back to soon.

Didn’t Ellsbury complain that the Sox medical team was (incompetent)?
Maybe Ellsbury is smarter than a Fifth Grader.
Ellsbury will probably be traded to an NL team for middle relief, two prospects, and a box of gauze.
Another lost seaon for the Sox.

The last few years, the Yankees haven’t had any coaches in the AFL, so their players aren’t getting the same amount of time at their positions as the ones that have their organization coaches on hand. When the Hawaiian winter League was in operation, it really helped to get these guys some playing time.

It would give me no greater pleasure than to have that final series in Boston be a meaningless one where we can play our Sept. callups.

That said, we will still probably be playing for home field advantage in the AL and those games will count.

  65. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

New Post: Rodriguez taking ground balls during BP

  67. CB August 20th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

The boston fanbase and media absolutely killed Jacoby Ellsbury calling him soft over and over because he broke 5 ribs and it took some time to get back. 5 ribs all on one side. The Sox doctors completely misdiagnosed it to begin with and let him play for a while with broken ribs. He goes back on the DL and Sox fans and the media just kill him about his heart.

And in the end it turns out Ellsbury likely came back too early and broke another rib diving for the ball. He dives for the ball trying to make a play and he’s dismissed as “fragile” when he rebrakes a rib.

Now the once world series hero and future of the club is well on his way to getting run out of town.

It’ll be very interesting to see how the media and fan base react to “Pedey” injury and having to go back on the DL. I’d guess it’ll be quiet a contrast to how Ellsbury was tossed into the scap heap.

It’s funny to think back to all the comments made on this board talking about how the Yankees medical staff has been so lacking in comparison to the state of the art medical care Theo instituted with the Sox. Mike Lowell, Ellsbury, Pedroia. Well done in all three cases.

Right. Wouldn’t be great to have him locker right next to that dirty sliding Brett Gardner? Then figure out where he’s playing. Finally trying to decide why NYY should give up players and still pay him $2 mil this year.

  69. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

To whoever questioned what I was talking about a few threads ago about Pedroia, this is exactly what I was talking about. It’s stupid, simply stupid to come back too soon from any kind of injury, especially the foot. This is why I love the line for (Girardi or Eiland? I can’t remember) about Hughes and the innings and how nothing else plays into that, because his career is what is important.

In other news… Does the randomly expanding PC Richards ad annoy anyone else? Every time… EVERY TIME I go to click on something, I end up clicking on something else that I didn’t want to click on because the massively expanding ad is pushing the page down.

  70. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

The Red Sox are beyond needing a team doctor. They need to call in noted forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht to perform an autopsy.
