TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m. / YES Network

UMPIRES: HP Greg Gibson, 1B Brian Knight, 2B Sam Holbrook, 3B Gerry Davis

WEATHER: Really nice night here in the Bronx. Very, very light breeze. Blue sky. Not too hot. It’s a good night.

BETTER THAN EXPECTED: The Yankees have struggled against Felix Hernandez this season — actually, struggled might not be strong enough — but individually, they’ve been solid against him. Mark Teixeira is a career .326 hitter with three homers in 43 at-bats against the Mariners ace. Curtis Granderson is a career .344 hitter, Robinson Cano is a .300 hitter and Derek Jeter is a .316 hitter against King Felix. Only Nick Swisher has more than 13 at-bats against Hernandez with a lower than .300 career average.

FINALLY, RUNS: The Yankees have scored 20 runs in the past three games. That’s after scoring 22 runs in their previous six games.

YOUNG GUN: With yesterday’s win, Phil Hughes has 15 wins a little more than a month after his 24th birthday. According to Elias, Hughes is the second Yankees pitcher in the past 35 years to win 15 games in a season before turning 25. The first was Andy Pettitte in 1996.

HOME SWEET HOME: At 40-21, the Yankees have the second-best home record in the majors. They’re tied with Philadelphia. Atlanta has the best home record at 44-17. Since moving into this stadium, the Yankees are 97-45 at home, the best home record in the majors in that time.

UPDATE, 7:15 p.m.: Zach McAllister is the player to be named later in the Austin Kearns trade. He’s on his way to the Indians organization.

UPDATE, 7:17 p.m.: Three-run home run by Russell Branyan. It’s a 3-0 Mariners lead before Burnett has recorded an out.

UPDATE, 7:55 p.m.: There are times Burnett looks terrific, and there are times when the Mariners seem able to hit him at will. He’s allowed two singles in each of the first three innings, and back-to-back two-out hits in the third have increased the Mariners lead to 4-0.

UPDATE, 8:14 p.m.: Two more singles and another run off Burnett. It’s 5-0 Seattle. The Yankees still don’t have a hit.

UPDATE, 8:20 p.m.: The crowd is booing Burnett in the fourth inning. He’s allowed three singles and just walked Jose Lopez to load the bases. With two outs, though, there’s no one getting loose in the bullpen.

UPDATE, 8:30 p.m.: Not usually a good sign when Austin Kearns is pinch hitting for Alex Rodriguez in the fourth inning.

UPDATE, 8:52 p.m.: Bases loaded with one out in the fifth, Hernandez struck out Pena and Gardner to stranded the runners and escape the jam.

UPDATE, 8:57 p.m.: Yankee Stadium is letting Burnett hear it after Branyan’s second homer of the game, a solo shot to center.

UPDATE, 9:24 p.m.: Seven of Hernandez’s past eight outs have been strikeouts, including four in a row. Every spot in the Yankees order has struck out at least once except the No. 2 hole where Derek Jeter is 1-for-3 without a K.

    MaineYankee -
The fans are starting to question what’s going on with that.

They changed the staff within the past few years and some think that was a mistake.

    …………………………………………………………………….

The Globe reporter today said Ellsbury was dogging it, and it seemed he didn’t want to come off the DL. It was their stupity that got him to where he is today. What is the Sox medical staff using, a Polaroid camera to take images. Say what you want about agents, but, if it weren’t for Boras, Ellsbury would have been hurt much worse.

Let’s Go Yankees – Good game! Later

  6. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

    Alan James?

I never knew his full name!! :)

  7. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Ugh. already Burnett doesn’t have it.

There…now that it’s been said, it doesn’t need to be repeated.

Go Yanks, let’s sweep this weekend

  11. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Cervelli is calling for bad pitches

  12. pat August 20th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

jnorris427 Former @TrentonThunder ace Zach McAllister dealt to #Indians to complete Austin Kearns deal

  13. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

A DB would be nice and settling here.

  14. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Not a good start to this game. AJ – don’t make me eat my words — I’ve already had dinner!!!!

  15. Jason22 August 20th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Zach McAllister is the ptbn for Kearns.

I hope he has a good career for the Indians, he regressed a little this year, but still so young, that he can recover, a change and a better chance with them will be good for him.

  16. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    Well, there goes THAT plan.

  17. Chad Jennings August 20th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Zach McAllister is the PTBNL in the Kearns deal. I was never the biggest McAllister believer, but that’s kind of shocking to me.

  18. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

so, the catcher sucks or the pitcher sucks?

  19. Northy August 20th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    ugly start

  20. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

gee for AJ and the stolen bases c’mon

  21. GoldGlove9486 August 20th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

    Game over.

  22. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Good for McAllister. It doesn’t sound like he was in the Yankees’ plans.

Well, I’ll be darned. Bad AJ showed up.

  23. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Don’t worry, the Yanks always score big against Hernandez. Oh…wait…

  24. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

AJ, you make more than $10m a year, don’t pitch like a retarded or moron.

  25. pat August 20th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

The blog going up and down when I refresh is making me nauseous.

So is that pitch from AJ.

  26. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

This is why I am worried.

3/5 of this rotation is a crap shoot.

  27. GoldGlove9486 August 20th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

AJ and Cervelli both started well and have become MAJOR disappointments.

  28. Yankeefran August 20th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

3 runs and not even an out recorded- yikes. The offense needs to work hard tonight.

  29. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

    Cervelli is such a disaster.

You really wonder how he is playing in the big leagues.

  30. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

My god that just sucked in general. Both this inning that that pop up.

  31. Pat M. August 20th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

    Tough inning for Cervelli

  32. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

could this game get any worse??? Maybe Hernandez will have a really bad day. AJ is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde who knows whose going to show up from game to game

  33. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Z-Mac for Kearns? What the heck?

  34. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

    trade away this AJ sucker.

  35. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Wow- game could be over before it starts. not a good start at all for AJ yikes.

  36. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

why is sea can only hit yankee pitchers.

both aj and cervilli are just dreadful

  37. KevinP August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Maybe it’s a blessing that you don’t waste a good AJ outing on a night that Felix pitches.

  38. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Seriously? We’re blaming Cervi for tripping on bat? Seriously? Posada would have done the same thing. Hell, Mauer would’ve done the same thing.

  39. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Not a good sign, was that???

I’m not a whiner or complainer, but what the heck is this??

Seattle can’t score off any other team, but they’ve done fairly well against the Yankees so far no?

Now, it’s not like the Yankees don’t stand a chance – there’s 9 innings – but you don’t give an ace like King Felix a 3-run head start. AJ!!!!

  40. Tom in N.J. August 20th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

I am never going to shop a PC Richard and Sons.

  41. Jason22 August 20th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

I think this might be for Wood as well, plus the 500k that was talked about.

    Maybe not?

A.J is impossible to have confidence in.

  42. yankeeslover August 20th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

For all those interested, Cleveland just got zach mcallister from the Yanks for “the player to be announced” in the Kearns deal

  43. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:20 pm

If Cervelli even gets off a throw in the vicinity of third base Ichiro is out by 10 feet. That changes the entire complexion of the inning and everyone knows it.

He should not be in the major leagues, plain and simple. He does not hit, and he does not play even close to average defense anymore. He was a nice story last year, but this year his is killing the team. It’s time to make a change.

  44. RMS August 20th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

AJ putting his team behind by 3 runs so far. Better hope King Felix doesn’t have it tonight.

  45. Nick in SF August 20th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

AJ has already helped us win a championship.

AJ has already helped us win a championship.

AJ has already helped us win a championship.

Ok, saying it three times isn’t enough.

  46. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

titanic blast from Branyan, Yanks should have gone after him instead of Berkman.

  47. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

who comes in now that AJ has that “look”?

Mitre was used yesterday. Gaudin was used a few days ago.

  48. yankeeslover August 20th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

He had an ERA over 5 this year, so his value slipped

  49. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Seattle barely averages more than 3 runs per entire game. It’s disgraceful to allow them on the board as easily as Burnett has done thus far. Walking non hitters like Figgins, followed up by grooving fastballs to a guy who has power in Branyan.

You have to know who is opposite you on the mound in a game like this. When Felix Hernandez is out there, first inning or not, you do everything in your power to keep them from scoring. You don’t just throw it out over the plate in counts like 2-1 with a base open to a power hitter.

  50. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

i blame cervilli for being a dreadful catcher

  51. Tom in N.J. August 20th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

I am not watching the game, but, judging by Matt’s presence here, they must be losing…

  52. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

    Sloppy, sloppy start

  53. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

bad throw by Captain, very poor.

  54. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

    this is well pathetic

  55. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:23 pm

UGH really. This is like the inning from hell. Why can’t we have back-to-back really good games

  56. 108 stitches August 20th, 2010 at 7:24 pm

No question about it. Ivan Nova will be needed before the rosters are expanded on 9/1.
Questions marks with Burnett, Vazquez, and Mosely for effectiveness.

  57. Benny Blanco August 20th, 2010 at 7:24 pm

AJ makes it so tough to support him. This guy cannot be trusted.

    LMAO…if only AJ had heart

  62. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:27 pm

so the only time sea scores runs for felix is against nyy, thats typical

  63. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:27 pm

This is the 7th time in the last 8 games that a Yankees starter has allowed a run in the first inning.

Hard to beat good pitchers when you never give your offense a chance to steal an early lead. Not only did Burnett give up a run in the first, but he made a lazy pitch and gave up all three of them.

I hope that isn’t it for this game tonight, but if Hernandez is on and Burnett does not throw up zeroes the rest of the way, this game could already be over.

  64. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 7:27 pm

it’s like beating a dead horse, AJ needs to locate. He can’t throw his curve for strike most of the time. He miss in the zone with FB. when you FB is not longer dominate as he no longer jacks it to 96-97. it’s gonna be hit when you don’t locate.

  65. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:27 pm

RS losing 5-0 in the first.

  66. Rob B August 20th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Wow. I’m so shocked that Matt is posting right now.

  67. YES August 20th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

AJ has the stuff to be an ace.

However, he is such a mental midget, all he will ever be is a .500 pitcher which is what he is for his career. And he is 33 yrs. old already.

I’d take him as my 4th or 5th starter, the problem is he is being paid as a #1.

As far as Cervelli goes, he is a career minor leaguer at best.

  68. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

    JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

  69. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

atleast lester getting rocked 5 to 0 tor

  70. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

    Maybe that’s a good sign???

    (I’m looking for anything!) :)

  71. Jason22 August 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

The Yankees are going to score off of Felix tonight, the question is can A.J settle down.

  72. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

How come Matt wasn’t here like the last 3 games.

  73. GoldGlove9486 August 20th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    Captain Clutch!!!

  74. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    LOL, Jeter, cool captain

  75. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

gotta love Jeter and his DP’s…maybe he should go back to leadoff

  76. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    Terrible

  77. Nick in SF August 20th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

The real disgrace is that AJ endorsed P.C. Richards & Son.

    It’s killing the team!

  78. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Was that a first pitch thingie by Jeter????

Gardner never even had a shot to go to 2nd.

  79. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

    fiqures this game over.

    yanks have no shot

  80. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Jeter should be batting 8th in tonight’s lineup. How can you have one of your worst hitters consistently up in crucial at bats at the top of the order?

He’s been doing this all season, it’s not shocking anymore. Doing the same things that continu to not work and expecting them to all of a sudden reverse direction is just foolish.

Not only did Jeter hit into a double play, but he barely made Hernandez work for it. Just another terrible at bat in a terrible season for Jeter.

  81. Carl August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

mlbnetwork Pedroia going on the DL is the reason why Lester gave up 5 runs lol

  82. Tom in N.J. August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Matt doesn’t exist when the Yankees are winning. It’s some sort of phenomenological exercise….

  83. xcv August 20th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

    nice dp thanks jeet

  84. Jason22 August 20th, 2010 at 7:32 pm

  86. MaineYankee August 20th, 2010 at 7:32 pm

It’s nice of you to show up Matt.

We missed you yesterday when the Yankees were winning.

  87. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Oh good, a Jeter GIDP. Bad play by Cervi, bad play by Burnett, bad play by Jete, It’s like an all you can eat buffet for the unbelievers tonight.

  88. Triple Short of a Cycle August 20th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I can’t wait until Burnett is off this team.

  89. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

This is gonna be a very polarizing game. I can tell.

  90. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

jeter double play again, two pitches , two outs ! come on , give gardner a chance, make Felix work. Jeter is a joke this season.

  91. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I do post here when they are winning, I don’t post here to be a cheerleader and waste my life kissing their butts when they do what they are expected to do.

When your $19 million shortstop is hitting .275 and hasn’t hit a home run out of the ballpark for 2 months, on top of the fact that he kills rally after rally hitting weak grounders right to the SS/2B, that’s something work commenting on.

Jeter batting 2nd may be worse than Jeter hitting first in the order, since he will come up with more runners on base and erase more of them with his ground balls.

  92. Nick in SF August 20th, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Matt is the Brigadoon of bad Yankee games?

  93. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Matt doesn’t think it’s important to support the team when they’re winning, only to weigh them down when they’re not.

He’s pretty much said that himself.

But, you know, he’s missing opportunities to pump himself up. He could show up when they’re winning to say how his theories are correct. But he doesn’t. Hmmm….

  94. Triple Short of a Cycle August 20th, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Only 2 players on the Yanks I can’t stand are Joba and AJ. AJ gives up during games when things aren’t going well and Joba isn’t into baseball 100 percent

  95. JetergroundsintoanotherDP August 20th, 2010 at 7:36 pm

    ugh

  97. xcv August 20th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

always can count on burnett to kill your 3 game winning streak momentum.

  98. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

The same people criticizing me for posting right now are the same ones who will keep toting the company line that games in May and June “don’t matter.”

How can anyone take you guys seriously is beyond my understanding.

The Yankees this year have a nice record, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t underachieving. If they win even 1/3 of the games they’ve totally given away this year, the AL East race is over right now and it doesn’t matter what they do in games like tonight as much.

When you face top pitchers, you need your starters to give you a chance by keeping it close. Other than Sabathia and Hughes, nobody in the Yankees rotation right now has the ability to give you any kind of consistency. Until Pettitte proves he is healthy, that is a serious concern.

I’m sorry I don’t say they are going to win the World Series this year just because of what they did last year. That doesn’t make me less of a fan, that makes me not delusional. If they ran out a rotation like they have right now, anything can happen.

  99. Pat M. August 20th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Matt has come through the front door, it’s time for me to go out the back door……Later

  100. Cashman needs to go August 20th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Burnett makes the Pavano signing look really good – at least he only got 10 million per year and the 6 times he actually pitched he was never “AJ bad”

and someone really needs to explain to the captain that he needs to take a few more pitches to have gardner try and steal – or tell gardner to steal on the first pitch…

  101. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

The same people criticizing me for posting right now are the same ones who will keep toting the company line that games in May and June “don’t matter.”

I have never said that, and I am criticizing you right now.

  102. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

I don’t like cervalli but it is nit his fault he tripped over a bat… Be fair

  103. YES August 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Giraldi will never drop Jeter to 8th or 9th in the lineup where he deserves to be.

Heck, he even hit him 2nd in the All-Star game while there were players having much better seasons than Jeter batting lower in the order.

You can’t have the manager idolizing one of his players.

  104. JetergroundsintoanotherDP August 20th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

it really does no good to bat gardner leadoff when the feeble captain can’t take some pitches and give him a chance to steal a base

  105. Triple Short of a Cycle August 20th, 2010 at 7:39 pm

  107. JetergroundsintoanotherDP August 20th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

who cares when Matt comes here? is what he’s saying right or wrong?

  108. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

I’ve showed up many times when the Yankees are winning, but they are selectively ignored because they would contradict your weak attempts at discrediting every post I make on those grounds.

I post on here when I feel like it, whether they are winning or losing. Usually when they are winning, there isn’t much that requires a comment because when you win, guess what, you usually are doing things right. Why would I waste my time coming here to discuss such obvious things just to earn the acceptance of a bunch of delusional blog commentators?

It’s difficult to have an objective conversation on this blog because nobody is willing to discuss things from any perspective other than that of the blinded cheerleader. When they win a game, everyone on here thinks they are the greatest team of all time too, so don’t even bother preaching about how people are overreacting. You guys are just as bad as the ones you criticize as “trolls.”

  109. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

    Jason22 -

Then what was Brett thinking not running on the first pitch???

Are we sure this isn’t a MY9 game???

How can a pitcher be so darn unpredictable? And when he’s bad he’s not just bad, he’s pathetic.

  110. Cashman needs to go August 20th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Matt having AJ blow up again in this game actually is the best thing – chances were pretty good that Feliz shuts then down again tonight (even vegas had the mariners as the favorites for tonight) so why would you want to get even more frustrated that Aj lost and pitched a 1 run 3 hitter…isn’t it better that Aj gives up 12 runs in 7 innings and the yankees lose 12 -0 than 1 – 0?

  111. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 7:41 pm

let me put it this way. IMO

The Yankees will be serve better having swisher in the 2hole and Gardner leader off right now

Jeter needs to bat 7th or 8th , because he is the 7th or 8th best hitter when we have a full lineup .

  112. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Hey at least Burnett throws pies in peoples faces!! Yanks still owe him 3 more years after this one!! Yeah

  113. MaineYankee August 20th, 2010 at 7:42 pm

    Wrong!!!

  114. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

The rotation is CC and Hughes and then hope for the best. To say AJ is a headcase is an understatement. It’s like watching a rookie on the mound who doesn’t know how to pitch. The Mariners have one guy in the lineup who can hit a homerun and of course AJ gives him a cookie. This is just like when they played the Royals and Tigers with Butler and Cabrera beating them alone.

  115. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

I really cant stand this guy, Ichiro. This guy is the most preeminent future Red Sox. I cant blame AJ for anything that happened in the first inning, except for falling behind Figgins by paying too much attention to Ichiro. Cervelli cant get a ball out of his glove, and of course, the effort of Itchy-ro and Branyan!

At least Branyan won a game with 2 outs in the 9th off the Sox earlier this year – off Bard!

  116. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

you can’t say that Andy didn’t give the Yankees consistency…he got hurt in the middle of the best season of his career

  117. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I swear if another Yankee swing at the first pitch….jeez!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  118. Rob B August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Matt, if you really showed up on here when the Yankees are winning, you would know that not everybody is a blind cheerleader. But, I will give you at least this: I remember you posting once during a win this past week. I was shocked to see it and wasn’t the only one. It was a rare event.

Unless you post under a different name when the Yankees are winning?

  119. m August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Whoa. Could be worse. AJ could’ve given up 5 like Lester did in the top of the 1st.

  120. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Yeah- we’re totally not hitting this guy tonight.

  121. luis August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

    Hi everyone,

AJ is frustrating to say the least. I wonder how is he going to look like in about a season and a half Yikes

  122. Ace August 20th, 2010 at 7:44 pm

3 runs for Felix? Gonna be rough

  123. GoldGlove9486 August 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

His pitch count is already at 14…don’t worry, he’ll be out of there soon.

  124. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

This guy is the most preeminent future Red Sox.

Ichiro has specifically said that he would ever play for the mariners or the yankees.

  125. MaineYankee August 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

    Trenton 3 Portland 0

  127. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

This Michael Kay is simply amazing. He is so lazy, it hurts. Just repeat the same garbage, same garbage.

Ken Singleton – now there’s a guy with class. He actually watched Mariners games prior to this series to study up on them.

  128. theREALkevin August 20th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Itd be cool if girardi gave jeter like 3 strt games off to rest his body and mind. Pena’d be fine filling in. Meanwhile if alex can’t run hard he shouldn’t be playing. The yanks won 3 in a row without him. Why rush?

  129. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Usually when they are winning, there isn’t much that requires a comment because when you win, guess what, you usually are doing things right. Why would I waste my time coming here to discuss such obvious things just to earn the acceptance of a bunch of delusional blog commentators?

Shouldn’t you want to post during wins to show your knowledge of the sport and educate other posters on WHY the yankees are winning?

  130. Ace August 20th, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Question. In this lineup y would u pitch to ichiro or branyan?

  131. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Strike my —. Good job laying off Swish, that was no strike.

  132. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

  133. Dano from England August 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

I stay up late through the night here in England, often, to keep up with the Yankee games, to read lots of comments on here, and very occasionally to chip in.

But Matt, with your inane negativity –
“If they win even 1/3 of the games they’ve totally given away this year” – you’ve sent me away as well.

    Nite, all.

  134. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

    GoldGlove,

That’s exactly the problem with this offense sometimes. They have to swing because he “pounds the zone,” but they never even made him prove he could throw strikes before they went up there hacking away from the beginning.

The goal against a guy like Hernandez is to get him out of there early enough when you still have a chance. Even pitchers who throw strikes can have pitch counts run up against them. When a guy has the stuff of Felix Hernandez, it is counterproductive to swing early, even when he throws strikes, because you still aren’t likely to hit it.

Even if every hitter took three strikes right down the middle for their first at bat, he would end up throwing more pitches than he’s thrown thus far in this game. Even if he gets ahead of you in a count, that doesn’t mean he won’t miss with a few pitches and get you back in it. Swinging at everything close to the plate is not a good strategy either, and it keeps him around for 8 or 9 innings instead of the 7 he would have been in there for otherwise.

  135. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

Gardner was put at the top of the lineup to be on base for the big guys to drive him in but it doesn’t help because Jeter’s dp’s erases him everytime. It’s the same bs everytime. Gardner stands at 1st like a statue and then the usual dp. It’s hard to bat Jeter 2nd when he looks dreadful and can’t ever get the ball out of the infield. He should be batting at the bottom of the order but of course Girardi would never do that to the captain and is putting one guys feelings ahead of the team.

  136. rconn23 August 20th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

I don’t know how anyone hits Hernandez. I’ll take him over any other pitcher in baseball. His assortment of pitches and his command of them is just dazzling.

A.J. is just too inconsistent and didn’t give the team a fighting chance. That’s just standard operating procedure for the Kyle Farnsworth of starting pitchers.

Not a big loss, considering that Burnett vs. the King was a complete mismatch on paper anyway.

    Just don’t get no hit.

  137. GoldGlove9486 August 20th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Well I’m not saying that every hitter should take three strikes down the middle.

  138. Rob B August 20th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

I’ve been asking myself: “Didn’t AJ struggle last season around this time as well?” So, I looked it up. For those with short memories that think everybody was dominant all season last year, August was AJ’s worst month of 2009. He posted a 6.03 ERA for the month and went 0-4 in 6 starts. He followed that up with a 3-1 record and 3.83 ERA in September/October. After that, we all know what he did in helping the Yankees win the World Series.

I’m not saying that he’ll do the same thing this season; but there is a pattern there, don’t you think?

  139. luis August 20th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

    Ace,
to none because the rest of the lineup is so weak, but if i didn’t have a choice i’ll pitch to branyan because even though he has power ichiro is the better hitter

  140. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Im hesitant to be excited about the Arias sisters story.

Im REALLY against the name Arias.

As in DAVID ARIAS of the Twins, turned David needles Ortiz of the Red Sox!

I absolutely despise the name Arias.

Oh well, I guess I cant despise everyone with that name, just because of one ROID MONSTER!

  143. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:50 pm

    Jerkface,

Again, I’m not here to gain the acceptance of a bunch of blog posters. I’m here to comment on things I find interesting or worth mentioning, and if people want to discuss them with me, I’m glad to have a conversation. If you’re going to attack me without even commenting on something related to baseball, then stop wasting all of our time and ignore the post.

When they win, I don’t need to waste my time posting here because I don’t have anything to prove. My points are what they are, whether I post here every day or once a week. If you can’t accept that, then remember that this isn’t your blog, and you have no control over what I say or do.

    —————————————–
kinda like how you deal with Pedro Martinez in the yonder days. Grind out ABs , make him work , hope for a bloop and a blast . Hope that he will make a mistake, which has happened. But the rate the Yanks are working the count, it looks like he will have his third complete game against us.

  149. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I’m not saying every hitter should do that. I’m merely pointing out that even that approach would run up his pitch count more than what they’ve done so far, to show how bad it’s been.

Hernandez does not go out there every night and throw shutouts, so you can beat this guy. Usually, that requires not wetting the bed like Burnett did in the first inning and keeping it really close, but sometimes Hernandez is not going to be perfect. If you never give him a chance to get himself in trouble, you’ll never see if he ends up making some mistakes.

Maybe he throws strike one, strike two, and then nibbles off the corners and goes to 3-2. These guys aren’t perfect, one or two good at bats like that could be enough to turn the tide a bit.

  150. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

lol, Itchy-ro will look perfect in the red sox uniform! im prepared for when it does happen, then I can really hate the guy!

So basically you’re a red sox fan? You believe he is going to join your favorite team despite the fact that he has publicly stated its mariners or New york?

CR9 is showing his true colors, red!

  151. theREALkevin August 20th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Lol so matt has “something to prove” when the yanks lose. I don’t think this guy realizes that no mlb team has ever gone 162-0. And he’s gunna wait a long, long time if he’s waiting for that. What a joke

  152. JetergroundsintoanotherDP August 20th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

just curious, is anyone really a fan of burnett?

he seems awfully hard to admire.

  153. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

There’s nothing you can’t overcome, as long as you keep trying

Somebody should relay that quote to the media who “gave up” on finding out what Needles Ortiz tested positive for.

It’s been over a year now, what’s going on – on that front?! :)

  154. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I’m here to comment on things I find interesting or worth mentioning,

What you are saying here is that you only find negative things interesting or worth mentioning. There are plenty of positive things that show baseball insight or can be interesting. Why did a good thing happen. Instead you focus on a bad thing that happened.

I think its pretty obvious Jeter grounding into a double play is bad, we didn’t need your sterling insight on the matter.

  155. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

That my friends is your ballgame.

  156. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

  157. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

    AHHHHH!! Run! Giant Quotation Marks!

  158. Nick in SF August 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

    Actually, Matt is right.

When you’re facing a very good pitcher, you have to be an even better pitcher. The reason that we’re not tied or ahead right now is that AJ decided to not be a better pitcher than Felix but to be a worse pitcher instead. There’s really no to quantify how much worse AJ has chosen to be, but if I had to estimate I would say at least 3 runs worse with potential for more.

Hopefully AJ will get word of Matt’s ire and decide that he has to be a better pitcher and not a worse one. And hopefully Felix will forget that he has to keep on being the better pitcher and slip up and be a worse pitcher.

I wish Girardi had internet access in the dugout.

  159. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Cervelli had best be hitting tonight because he has butchered his defense

  160. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Yuck, Cano could have gotten to that to at least, knock the ball down and keep Franklin from scoring!

  161. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

burnett is pathetic. he is gutless.

2 outs and lays down like a dog.

  162. Ace August 20th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Thanks AJ. Worst hitting team in league. Our SP is in huge trouble come Oct. CC maybe Hughes. Maybe Andy.

  163. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Do you really think people expect this team to go 162-0 every time they raise even the slightest objection to what is going on with this team on the field?

This team is underachieving this year, they should be at least 4 or 5 games better than their record is right now. Nobody expects perfection, but what is expected is that when you have a team with this much talent on the field, they don’t have games where they just totally don’t show up, like the one on Sunday against KC.

This team is not perfect, no team is, but that doesn’t mean we can’t expect them to be better than they have been. They’ve lost many games in which they had leads after 7, and they’ve had nights where they have had a lot of really bad at bats against mediocre pitchers.

  164. luis August 20th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

    Cash,

Right on the money lol, that hernadez guy has nintendo stuff, incredible

  165. pat August 20th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

  166. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

DONT BLAME AJ BURNETT! Blame Needles Ortiz for this, damn it!

  167. Faiaz August 20th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Damnit i was hoping after tomorrow’s game, i can look at the stats and read all five of our starters have at least 10 wins. How long have Burnett been stuck on 9 wins… a month?

  168. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Anyone else have a feeling that we’re scoring at least 5 runs off “King” Felix tonight?!

  169. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Matthilda, you don’t need anybodys help in discrediting you posts. You do very well on your own.

  170. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Even the worst offense ever can hit AJ’s crap fastball. I am not surprised that once again a terrible team enjoys playing the Yanks. When you have 20 wins as a team playing a good team is fun for them. A pitcher with decent stuff can get their lineup out easy and it just shows how bad AJ is tonight.

  171. Ken Phelps August 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Cr9 is now the time to really discuss steroids on the red sox, Based on the whole Clemens thing. I think we Yankee fans have to keep quiet about steriods

  172. Matt August 20th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

The only reason that run scored was that Burnett let him easily steal that base right in front of the hit. I’m sick and tired of guys running wild on him, how many runs has he allowed to score with 2 outs because he totally ignores runners?

Those are runs you just cannot afford to give away when you are facing a pitcher like Felix Hernandez. Slide step, give him a courtesy look, at least give your catcher a chance to throw him out.

  173. luis August 20th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

    Matt,

your last post is true, but we’ve also won some games that we shouldn’t have won so everything evens out in the long run

  174. Purenyyankee August 20th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Thank you, Tin Man Burnett for coming out and giving us a chance. What a joke. Gutless as has been the case all year.

  175. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Good at bat by Grandy. The guy is not perfect, he can’t keep throwing CGSO’s (or near ones) against us.

  176. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

    Ken

Roger never used steroids – with the Yankees. He’s been adamant the whole time that he did not use, just as David Ortiz has been silent.

  177. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

I have no qualms with him, but for the fact that he’s ugly as sin.

  178. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

The only reason that run scored was that Burnett let him easily steal that base right in front of the hit. I’m sick and tired of guys running wild on him, how many runs has he allowed to score with 2 outs because he totally ignores runners?

I am glad you noticed the very interesting and note worthy achievement of a base runner stealing off Burnett.

  179. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Hopefully Granderson steals 2nd before Cervelli hits into a dp. He will be really overmatched tonight.

  180. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

maybe if some of these Yankees batters took a few pitches we could at least get Hernandez out of the game. At least Grandy is still getting on base

  181. Faiaz August 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

    Ken Phelps,

LOL, Clemens is more a Redsock than he is a Yankee.

  182. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Pena goes yard and shocks everyone?

  183. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

You know Cervelli is a groundball to SS or 2B waiting to happen.

  184. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

That guy at 2nd may have been safe.

I guess the only team that gets screwed on neighborhood plays is…..wait for it….the Yankees!

  185. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

    Rob B -

It’s good to know but it doesn’t help. :(

I just keep hoping AJ will get on a roll, and his last outing showed a lot of promise. I know they wasted that performance, and now it’s very obvious they did. I mean more obvious.

  186. Dill Pickler August 20th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Raise your hand if you’re comfortable knowing that either AJ (Awful Jackass) or Javier Vazquez will have to start in the postseason for the Yanks.

  187. Eric in UWS August 20th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Well, at least they start with Gardner leading off.

  189. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

does the Yankees lead the league in grounding into DP’s….cause it sure as hell seems that way.

  190. luis August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Four runs deficit against hernandez thats a tall order to meet

  191. Rob B August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

    Nick,

Matt may be right, but I have no respect for a guy who only shows up to complain when the Yankees are losing. I know I’m not one of the most active posters here, but I’m sure there are plenty of others who would agree with me on this. If somebody wants respect, they need to do more than just whine all the time.

  192. Faiaz August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

We are scoring THREE runs next inning.

  193. jesusmonterofordh August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

at worse yanks tied for first

  194. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

it is 8pm going into the 4th inning. I think it’s fair to say this game is over.

AJ just gives off such a bad feeling.

  195. theREALkevin August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Matt bottom line every team loses games. U just point out their mistakes when they’re not playing well. I used to be kinda similar to you. U don’t have to listen to anyone. U should realize tho even the greatest team of all time had flaws and lost games. Shit happens and you have to trust in talent and in the LONG RUN.

  196. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

At least the Yanks know they won’t be wasting a great performance by one of their pitchers tonight. If CC or Hughes pitched 8 innings 2 runs and they lost it would stink. It won’t be a nail biter tonight, from the 1st inning everyone knew it was probably over. AJ’s line will probably be something like 7-8 runs and against Felix that obviously isn’t getting you a W.

  197. Faiaz August 20th, 2010 at 8:04 pm

    Arod homers

  198. JM August 20th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

Cisco is really not playing well. I don’t expect him to hit very well, but his defense over the past month or so, in particular, has been atrocious. At least Pena has a great glove and has actually gotten a few really timely hits.

As long as they receive a fair strike zone, they should be ok.

Just look at tonight for example. AJ couldnt buy a strike against Figgy or Branyan.

However, Felix Hernandez has received every pitch called a strike. If Im not mistaken, I think a pitch of Felix’s landed in my living room, and that was called a strike also!

    okay … that feels good.

the Red Sox are basically irrelevant to the Yankees. They aren’t coming back to win the division or the wild cart…this race is between TB and the Yankees and unlike the Yankees TB can beat teams that they should beat

Yesterday, the Yankees looked fairly awful in the first 3 innings, then woke up for the 4th. It would be nice to see a repeat tonight. But, then again, they weren’t facing a guy who had already pitched two complete games against them.

You can do whatever you want. And it’s only appropriate as a YANKEES FAN to defend your own and bash the Red Sox.

Last I checked, Andy and Arod admitted their mistakes. Needles Ortiz and Preggers Manny never admitted theirs!

  215. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

After AJ gives up another 3-4 runs Girardi should take some of the guys out of the game. Jeter, Arod and Tex or someone else. The game is over and Cano and Jeter can really use the rest. They shouldn’t have to be out there since AJ the headcase decided not to compete tonight.

  216. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

    I agree with Matt’s 7:59 post.

But I wish Matt wasn’t so arrogant and didn’t make it seem like being a fan of a team, and wanting to support them was some kind of sin or sign of stupid.

    Ken,

The only reason so many “Yankees” have been caught is because Mitchell is well connected with the Sox. It’s not like players that play for the Yankees only have been associated with PEDs. The average is the same throughout the league so how is it that so many Yankees players were named by a dude that has tight ties with the sox?

Matt just posts and minds his own business. The arrogance is of everyone else that try to tell him not to post here or bully him into not posting here. That’s arrogance.

When has Matt ever said that being a fan of a team and supporting them was a sin or stupid??

  221. Captain Clutch August 20th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Can the Yanks just end the game now in the 4th inning? What is the point of playing the rest of the game. The fans in the stands should get tickets to another game and everyone can go home. Another pathetic performance for AJ against single A batters.

  222. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

everyone thinks Burnett has ‘ace’ stuff, there might be the case 3-4 years ago. What i see is a guy who has a straight fb that sits at 93-94 mph, a guy who most time has no control of the zone.
maybe it’s not confidence issue with Burnett in as much as his stuff is becoming more pedestrian and he still has little idea how to pitch. when hitter stay off his curve which he normally can throw for a strike . He is essentially a sitting duck on the mound.

his comment in Texas in which i paraphrase ‘ i really pitched tonight’ illustrate the fact most the time he just go out there and throw.

he is so many ways , quite an ordinary pitcher to me at this point.

On the contrary. We are wondering why Matt doesn’t post during all games. Most of the time, Matt comes in when things look bleakest. He ONLY points out what’s going wrong, because, apparently it’s not important to note when things are going right.

He’s arrogant because he thinks he knows more than anyone else because he’s pointing out the flaws. Thing is, we all know what the flaws are, but we choose to try to enjoy games anyway, to look at the big picture, and to enjoy this team as much as possible.

Matt has some interesting takes on things, and I don’t disagree with everything he says. But his tone is condescending, and you can count down to when he’s going to show up.

Not “on the contrary.” You may wonder where he is when the Yankees are winning, but not anyone else on this blog. The rest are only concerned with attacking Matt.

So he points out the flaws? That makes him arrogant? Do you know who else looks at the negative of everything? Betsy, but I don’t think it’s right when posters unnecessarily attack her either. And Betsy is certainly not arrogant.

Because he doesn’t praise Cano’s sweet swing or Grandy’s 180 degree turnaround?

When has Matt actually said that he knows more than anyone?

There is no rule on this blog that says Matt has to post when the Yankees are winning.

This game was over after three hitters.

AJ just has to give them 2-3 more innings so you don’t kill the bullpen for the next two games.

Alex needs to go on the DL, no more fooling around.

This is what I do, I call up Jesus, DH him everyday, except when Mosely is pitching, since he caught him down in Scranton. If they want bring up Nova as well, and sit down A.J until Eiland can get through to him, so Jesus cann catch him as well.

Cervelli is playing so bad at the moment, and Alex is to valuable, they need to let him heal, and they should give Montero a chance.

Designate Reegie Cornona, add Jesus to the 40, DL Alex, and possibly bring up Nova, come on Brian Cashman, these moves all make sense, pull the trigger.

    He’s an amazingly frustrating guy.

There aren’t five pitchers in the league with better stuff and he’s never been able to pull it together and reach his full potential.

Tells you how overrated stuff is when evaluating a pitcher.

To me, I just look at his starts as toss ups because you never know what you are going to get with him.

Tonight? I had a feeling he would come up short so I’m not shocked by this performance.

They aren’t calling up Montero. Folks hoping for that aren’t going to get their wish.

  300. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Cervelli is now almost as bad/equal to Pena at bat…automatic out

  301. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 8:46 pm

i know the yanks are down 5, but why not send Granderson with Cervelli up?

  302. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 8:46 pm

Is it possible that all those hits to the head are taking a toll on Cervelli?

5 runs is not insurmontable if we squeeze a run here and there, we need to to get Felix out this game.

  307. SJ44 August 20th, 2010 at 8:47 pm

On a night you are pulling the same stupid crap celebrating Boston injuries, the most important guy in the Yankees lineup, Arod, leaves the game again with an injury.

Why don’t you take your negative Karma elsewhere.

Everybody is sick of your stupid garbage you spew on here every night.

  308. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 8:47 pm

Do they think that Fe-licks threw at him intentionally?

  309. Jason22 August 20th, 2010 at 8:47 pm

SJ you keep on saying they won’t call him up, I will keep on saying they will, lets see who is right.

You might be right, I just don’t think you are. I think Brian Cashman knows Montero can help the team win this year, again we will see who is right.

Alex should go on the dl, because he is too important to the team winning the world series, and missing 3 or 4 days is not enough to get him healthy.

    Come on Ramiro.

  310. syd_cash August 20th, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Grand Slam…who’s up…this is when I just want to cry Pena up with the bases loaded and one out

    Come On Jala- Pena!

  312. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 8:48 pm

    SJ44 -

I suppose if he was gonna be bad (AJ, that is), tonight was a good night to do it. Last week was brutal wasting a good performance by him (because you don’t know when you’re going to get another one) against a journeyman pitcher. At least this is vs. “King Felix.”

“Just say no” to Montero. Resist the urge at all costs.

The only thing is, the Yankees were on a nice pace offensively the last 3 games, and you knew tonight would be a challenge. It really stunk to put the team 3 down before an out was made. That’s abysmal. As in, as low as it gets for a pitcher.

  313. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 8:48 pm

let me first guess… no pinch hit for pena, this could be the game here or at least an opportunity to get back into the game?

    what?

  314. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 8:49 pm

    SJ44

I love ya too! Dont worry, Alex will be fine. It’s better if he gets the rest now, so we have him healthy when we need him the most.

And I’m pretty sure by doing what I do, I bring positive karma to the Yankees!

  315. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 8:49 pm

mind boggling … what’s with Joe’s love for pena?

  316. UnKnown August 20th, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Kind’ve feel like the Yanks need to get some runs here out of this or it’s over.

  317. SJ44 August 20th, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Montero can’t help the team win this year.

If he could, he would be up here already.

Unless something has changed in the last 24 hours, they have no plans to call up Jesus Montero.

Even if Arod has to go on the DL, Montero wouldn’t be the guy they call up.

  318. Jerkface August 20th, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Brett was trying to take it the other way, missed it.

  319. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Maine, cory Arbiso is a big 24 year old right hander and he’s always been sort of every team’s swing man. Start, long relief, EIG and sometime closer. Throws a bit of everything. Nothing special, but, does a pretty good job when he pitches.

  320. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

At least TRY to win the game?

You have another bench player that can play third, and in fact one who is probably a better option in general than Pena. Bases loaded, one out, likely your only chance to get back in the game.

At least TRY, pinch hit Thames and see what happens since you have an option to replace him there. Even if Thames does the same thing as what Pena did, at least you can feel he would have at least had a chance, unlike Pena who was totally overmatched as expected.

Nunez hasn’t played 15 games in his career at third and Marcus Thames can’t hit RH pitching.

Burning 3 guys down 5 runs in the fifth inning really isn’t logical.

Thames has a .852 OPS vs rhp this year.

And you have to think this might be the best opportunity they get, bases loaded with one out.

I don’t know how good or bad Nunez is at 3B, but it doesn’t really matter if you don’t decrease the five (now six) deficit.

  361. theREALkevin August 20th, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Forgot nunez was on the roster, thames should have batted and then given way for nunez. Thames almost surely would have failed also, the matchup for him against this pitcher is not favorable. But its more favorable than for pena.

You can make all the adjustments you want. It doesn’t make it easier to hit him. Especially when he has a six run lead.

Were you thinking that last night and the night before?

It’s the difference between looking at each game under a microscope and viewing the season through a wide-angle lens.

The Yankees are a damned good team subject to ups and downs the way all teams are. And the later you get in the season the more aches and pains are going to show up. This team didn’t make it to first place in the majors by looking mediocre.

? they had bases loaded against Felix, that scenario isn’t likely to occurred again. Thus you have to capitalize the opportunity there.

Nunez has 1mb at bat , so what, Pena is the one the WORST in the MLB, actually you can make a case Nunez is an upgrade offensively than Pena , Period. anyone is almost an upgrade.

I understand the bench is short, but if you don’t capitalize that one moment in the game, the game is lost anyway, and who are you reserving you bench for?

Wait – I just got home from dinner with the family; forget AJ – what happened to Alex? I just went through the game thread and no one mentioned anything except SJ……..did he aggravate his calf? Oy vey

There’s nothing to be said about AJ. He’s a great guy and a not so great pitcher. If Andy comes back (IF ) and comes back ok, we’ve got CC and Andy…………and still you don’t know what you’d get out of Phil in the post-season. I would classify that as questionable. Then again, how do we know Price would dominate? Garza’s having on off year………….Who knows? The point is that AJ and Javy are going to be of no help at all.

  398. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

1 run in 24 innings. Fe-licks is good, very good, but he ain’t that good.

  399. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Those are pretty tasteless comments about Lester….

“Yankees send Damon Oppenheimer and scout Billy Eppler to watch Yu Darvish”

Yankee scouts can now join the other 29 teams already watching every one of his starts.

  401. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

My comments about Jawn Lestah were a joke. And I’m pretty sure the SOSH comment was a joke based on his performance tonight and the Red Sox staff throwing injured players out there to play with no regard for their health!

  402. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

no words on Alex , Betsy, he could okay or gravely injured.

  403. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

It really stinks that AJ couldn’t have been competitive. I don’t care about tonight in terms of the Yankee offense as Hernandez is great…………that’s not a big deal. AJ is the bigger deal.

  404. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

All in all, good start for AJ. One bad inning, gave up 6 runs in a start against Fe-licks. I cant complain. Get ‘em next start, AJ!

  405. GreenBeret7 August 20th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Those Hoards of Charleston are sacking Rome, 10-0 in the 7th inning.

  406. RMS August 20th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Another failure by AJ the 16+ million dollar man.
First it was Posada’s fault. Cervelli catches him, the same results.
AJ misses Eiland. Eiland’s back, the same results.

Maybe AJ needs Dave Duncan, but he’s with the Cards. Oh, well.

  407. ac1 August 20th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

i still dont get how this team makes absolutely no adjustment to felix. 3 times they have seen him this year and each time is worse than the one before.

  408. CR9 August 20th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

    ac1

sometimes, a pitcher just has a team’s number. and in this case, Fe-licks is a very good pitcher. So it’s understandable.

  409. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 9:26 pm

AJ stunk against the worst offensive team in the ML. but he gave 7 innings. At least that’s good to preserve the pen.

  410. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2010 at 9:27 pm

    “14-0 Blue Jays! Jawn Lestah!”

We face those Jays 9 more times, the Rays 7 and the Sox 6 times.

Betsy-I think A-Rod was removed because the calf felt tight during an at bat.
Anyone for promoting Laird when A-Rod goes on DL?

    ____

I dont know about that. 1 run in 3 games? professional hitters should do just a little bit better than that. Halladay dominated the yankees, but they hit him from time to time.

I’m listening to the Portland guys.

I feel sorry for Upstate Kate. She drove all the way down to NYS from Upstate NY for this game.

m, if you’re out there, I’m taking a a page from your playbook. “Etch-A-Sketch” game.

    Let’s get the next 2. :)

  414. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

    Well I doubt he’s gravely injured, Cashmoney……….at least I hope not, lol. I laugh because I’m worried……….

Yes, but 1. hopefully arod doesnt need the dl, 2. if they wouldnt promote montero, they arent going to promote laird.

  416. 98NYY August 20th, 2010 at 9:30 pm

So if Arod goes on the DL…who do you call up? Laird? If Nunez scares what about someone with even less time in AAA…

  417. GhettoBlaster August 20th, 2010 at 9:30 pm

CR9- what is you obsession with Boston?

  418. Asd August 20th, 2010 at 9:31 pm

That last catch by Cervi did look cool.

  419. bruceb August 20th, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Red Sox score would be funny if we didn’t have to play Jays next. By the way, anyone know how many winning streaks AJ has killed stone dead this season?

  420. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Yankee Trader, thanks! Ouch, that’s not good…………now I hope this hasn’t set Alex back further.

Getting on the Yankees for not handling Felix is sort of silly

i think Jorge Vasquez in SWB plays 1b/3b/dh guy, I don’t know if he any good at 3b. But if he is adequate he is a better hitter than Laird at this point.

  425. ac1 August 20th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

  429. EA August 20th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

King Felix’s last 3 games against us have all been complete game wins

Has any modern pitcher ever thrown 4 straight complete game wins against us? Halladay might have, but damn, we might have found a new Yankee killer.

  430. hardwired7 August 20th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

    Yu Darvish is sick.

He’s thrown way too many pitches to this point (208 IP @age 20), but that’s how they roll in Japan.

Plenty of vids on YouTube, just like for any prodigy.

  431. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Seattle exploited the Yankees weakness in the 1st inning, when speedsters Ichiro and Figgins pulled off a double steal, with Cervelli unable to make a play at 3rd, and AJ unable to hold runners. Then their power hitter takes AJ yard. Maybe we’ll luck out, and nab a catcher who gets thru waivers who can play defense. John Buck is back, and I’d be happy if the Yankees got Molina back.
However I’m not holding my breath.

  432. xcv August 20th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

hernandez just toying with this lineup for the 3rd time this year. totally owns this team. should be gratefully he’s not pitching in the AL east – especially boston or tampa bay

  433. BD (Boston Dave) August 20th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

I hope Yu Darvish feels better soon.

Maybe he’ll be better than some of the other Japanese pitchers who were “sick” against non-MLB competition.

  436. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 9:45 pm

I was hoping they’d have a good night against Hernandez, but, darn, he’s a really, really good pitcher. You have to hope pitchers like that are having a bad night. It just would have been nice if the game was a contest. Big difference in having to score 2 runs to win as opposed to 6 or 7 against this calibre pitcher.

Chances are if a pinch hitter was sent up in that one inning, they’d have had similar results. I don’t think you’d want Nunez’ first ml at-bat this year be against that kind of pitcher in that situation; Thames as done a nice job this year, but still, it would have been a gamble.

    Good job by Gaudin tonight.

Can the Yankees score 6 in the 9th??????

    :?

    Poor upstate kate. :(

    Gotta win the next 2.

What’s Tampa doing tonight – oh, that’s right, they’re in CA.

  437. ac1 August 20th, 2010 at 9:46 pm

more worrysome than not hitting felix again is again giving up 6 runs to the worst offense possibly in history.

  438. ZMAN August 20th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Nice job by AJ going 7 strong innings, keeping us in the game…. Too bad the offense didn’t show up.

My daughter just informed me that tonight is the first night of Mercury Retrograde so it’s the planets that were working against the Yankees tonight.

I just nod and agree, not really understanding what that means and hoping her knowing that is just a phase.

  443. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

they are happy they won’t lose 0-7

  444. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

    Doreen-

It’s hard to come back against an ace like Felix, when your pitcher gives up 3 runs in the 1st and is down 5-0 by the top of the 4th!

  445. Cashmoney August 20th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

    for PAT
At 20:00 UT (Universal Time) Friday, August 20th, 2010, Mercury the wise communicator—and universal trickster—turns retrograde at 19°01′ Virgo, in the sign of the Virgin, sending communications, travel, appointments, mail and the www into a general snarlup! The retro period begins some days before the actual turning point (as Mercury slows) and lasts for three weeks or so, until September 12, 2010, when the Winged Messenger reaches his direct station. At this time he halts and begins his return to direct motion through the zodiac.

Everything finally straightens out on September 27, as he passes the point where he first turned retrograde. Mercury normally turns retrograde three times a year, but this year he turns tail four times, which is unusual. The effects of each period differ, according to the sign in which it happens

  446. igotid88 August 20th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

    Let’s go Yankees!!!!

  447. ac1 August 20th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

6.33 garrett olson has now struck out 2/3 of the side.

  448. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

It means that Mercury is travelling (or appears to be) backward in it’s orbit.

  449. Yankeefran August 20th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

    Way too many strike outs…

  450. JobaTipsHisCap August 20th, 2010 at 9:53 pm

they just wanna go home earlier and count the money, understood.

  451. Betsy August 20th, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Well at least we have our own ace in CC and are hopefully developing one of our own in Phil……..tonight, we got to see one first-hand (unfortunately).

  452. igotid88 August 20th, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Why are we going after another Japanese pitcher?

  453. Yankee Trader August 20th, 2010 at 9:55 pm

  454. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 9:55 pm

    Yankee Trader.

    I know. I know.

Hey, even if he’d capped it at 3 – come back strong in the 2nd, who knows? The team had to be so deflated. I can see them saying to AJ, don’t worry, we can come back, after that first inning. But when he turns around and gives up more in the 2nd? I don’t care how good a team you are, you know going into the game it’s going to be a fight against Hernandez. Hernandez plus a gift lead? Forget it.

    Maybe Tampa will lose, too.

(And I know that sounds lame)

  455. igotid88 August 20th, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Yankees are striking out way too much. 17 last week and 13 today.

  456. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Wasn’t it the last time in Seattle that AJ had his “aha” moment regarding the changeup while watching King Felix???? Whatever happened to that?

Viola , i give you YUuuuuuuuuuu!

also, I think he is a good looking dude, so made maybe he give Jeter a run for his money.

  459. Doreen August 20th, 2010 at 9:58 pm

I would think, with Yu Darvish, that the Yankees are just doing their due diligence. See what’s what.

  460. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 20th, 2010 at 10:01 pm

The Yankees were titans last night. Forget about tonight and turn the page. Felix Hernandez is a pitching version of Miguel Cabrera. Tip your cap and applaud the fact that there are some amazing pitchers and hitters. Let it go.

The Yankees averaged almost 9 runs a game for the last three games before this one.

    Yankees will be fine.

But I cant say the same for my hands! I had a tube of Krazy Glue and I couldnt get it to come out of the little nozzle at the top for love or money. So I kept mindlessly squeezing it while I was on the phone and all of a sudden it came out – from the side of the tube. I didnt necessarily get the project done I needed it for, but my fingers pretty much stuck together!

    Worse pickup: Pavano or Burnett?

I’d go with Burnett. At least with Pavano we didn’t have to watch him embarrass himself on the field. He was always in the MRI tube. Watching Burnett “pitch” is like getting your fingernails pulled out by Torquemada.
