Nova on the mound, and a bottom three of:
    Eduardo Nunez SS
    Ramiro Pena 3B
    Francisco Cervelli C

    AT the Blue Jays ?
    .
Winning this game will show a LOT about the depth of this team !

  3. Erin August 23rd, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I have to admit, this is pretty funny:

Ledger_Yankees I hope you realise that’s the New York Yankees lineup, not Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  4. Jerkface August 23rd, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Johnny Damon is about as delusional as Teddy/Leonardo in Shutter Island. What a no loyalty freak

Damon had no part in the waiver process, the Tigers and the Red Sox do all the work there. He also has a no trade to Boston. So what are you talking about?

  5. Erin August 23rd, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Ledger_Yankees Not sure why Jeter is out but he was probably due for an off day, especially up here on the turf. We’ll see though.

I never complain about the line up but Come On Joe???? Really????

  9. Dylan August 23rd, 2010 at 3:45 pm

People are actually calling him a “traitor” because he was claimed by another team? Wow… that totally makes sense!

  10. JM August 23rd, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Jete was due for a day off. I hope that’s what it is.

    nice AAA lineup

  12. CBean August 23rd, 2010 at 3:46 pm

    wow..six homegrown yanks..when we win this game..be afraid..be very afraid…

  15. Mgumpher August 23rd, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Given the way the Boston fans treated Damon once he became a Yankee it would certainly be odd to see him go there.

I wouldn’t count it out, but this seems more like a move to block than to acquire.

  16. pat August 23rd, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Joelsherman1 Keep in mind Damon has played OF just twice since 7/28, mainly now a DH. Redsox have Ortiz, need Damon to accept not ony trade, but OF duty

Resting Jeter against a tough righthander, om the turf in Toronto is a good call imo.

  21. CountryClub August 23rd, 2010 at 3:48 pm

1st, I don’t care if Damon goes to Boston. But I have a question for those that are into this kind of thing: Damon has a no trade to Boston, so he’d have to waive it to be traded to them. But what if Detroit just tells Boston to take him (because they claimed him off waivers)? Can Damon block that?

  22. ac1 August 23rd, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Well Jeet was limping yesterday. I still think having 13 pitchers and 3 bench players (two of which are in the lineup), is not very smart. Having Nova here to ‘push everyone back one day”, makes no sense. In fact, i would still keep cc on his normal rest since he threw something like 70 pitches yesterday. And if they end up skipping Javy (10 days between starts), might as well be 15 and put him on the DL (bring up someone who can add to the bench (Montero Montero Montero)

  23. Shame Spencer August 23rd, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I wonder what Johnny does here. At least my afternoon just got more interesting…and the Red Sox outfield just got weaker.

  24. Jerkface August 23rd, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Damon cannot be waived to another team if he has a NTC. That defeats the purpose of a NTC.

  25. pat August 23rd, 2010 at 3:49 pm

ed_price Damon can block and told me he’s not inclined to go back to Boston

  26. jacksquat August 23rd, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Boston is 6.5 back. Six game left head to head. A comeback is very unlikely, but I’ll say, remember The Boston Massacre (1978).

sox has Lowrie, Hall to back up infield, Rays has Brignac , S. rodriguez. and we have one of the worst ML player in Pena for the entire season. I simply don’t get why Pena is on this team, when any options are better options than Pena.

  29. RiveraBlues August 23rd, 2010 at 3:51 pm

imo Johnny goes to sox if there is opportunity for playoff push….with the suxs..don’t see it happening untless there is a epic collapse on both the Rays and Yanks part…

Boras better be asking the redsox to extend johnny a 2 year $24 million extension for waiving his NTC- just like he tried ripping off the yankees last offseason….

of maybe Boras is a boston flunky in the same class as the criminals, serial killers and terrorists that call boston their home (a tribute to CR9)

  41. G. Love August 23rd, 2010 at 3:54 pm

It’s bold play by the Red Sox.

If he waives the NTC and Detroit sticks him there, he costs Boston 1.8 million plus the luxury tax implications since they are already over the payroll threshold.

Spending over 2 million dollars to block the Rays and Yankees from claiming him feels a bit extreme.

Perhaps they knew there’s no way he’d waive the NTC.

Either way, I’d hate to see him back in Boston. God forbid he helped the Red Sox get the wild card Yankee fans would spontaneously combust and want Cash’s head on a platter since they’d make him the target for not closing a deal with Damon even though there was no real deal to close that worked for the Yankees.

  42. Carl August 23rd, 2010 at 3:55 pm

  50. G. Love August 23rd, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I actually think Boras would encourage Damon to go to the Red Sox since it would increase his brand again before hitting the free agent market again.

Unless there is really bad blood there, and there might be, Damon would be silly to stay in Detroit with a chance to play for a big market team still in the race.

  51. hardwired7 August 23rd, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I couldn’t understand why coolstandings gave TB better odds of winning the division, even while the Yanks held a slim lead.

then I looked @their schedule. here’s how the Rays up:

    3 @home vs. the M’s
    3 @home vs. the O’s
    4 @KC

the Yanks, meanwhile, have Boston, the Jays and Boston again.

if Minnesota continues to have better record than the Rangers, though, they’d be the 1st round opponent if the Yanks win the WC.

  52. ac1 August 23rd, 2010 at 3:58 pm

i guess jeter was bound to get a day off, and this would have happened with nunez and pena in the same lineup, but was hoping that it would be with posada at catcher and a little power at DH.

Wouldnt really worry if the yankees win the division or the wild card at this point. They have Minny’s number in the playoffs, and dispite what we saw in the last rangers series, they are not ready to compete with the yankees, even with cliff lee.

If the Tigers release him, they are on the hook for all but the prorated minimum (about $150,000+/-). There would be very little luxury tax hit for any team he signed with. My guess is that Tampa would try to sign him for fear that he would choose to come back here, assuming he’d be wanted.

  58. hardwired7 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:02 pm

    Jeter vs. Morrow:

    16 ABs
    7 Ks
    .188 BA
    .250 SLG

good night for a rest (SSS be damned)

  59. ET August 23rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

    Lineup makes NO cents

Why rest all the key guys against their best pitcher? Couldn’t have waited until tomorrow against Rzycipsnki?

  60. Yankee Trader August 23rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I think Brandon Inge has been put on waivers and “might” still be available to claim. Plays 3B now but has experience at catcher.

Certainly would be nice if Yankees make the playoffs with the home field advantage and their starters rested and in line to start lefties CC and Pettitte at home.

  61. pat August 23rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

My son asks what the line-up is and when I tell him he says, “Girardi tired of answering questions about 12-0 without A-Rod?”

Needs lots of complaining to assure a “W” tonight.

  62. upstate kate August 23rd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I can’t (or don’t want to) imagine Johnny D going back to the sox

  63. GreenBeret7 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:04 pm

NYYs have had a lot of success with pitchers making their MLB starting debuts over the last few years. Kennedy, Desalvo, Clippard, Chase Wright, Karstens.

  64. UnKnown August 23rd, 2010 at 4:04 pm

I think if the Tigers keep him and then loose him to free agency next year, they at least get a draft pick out of all this. Probably the draft pick would be more valuable to them then if they all out let him go and saved just a little bit of money.
This all of course if they can’t work out a trade.

No one is as likely to go to the postseason as the Yankees.

Anyway, you’re openly in love with Damon’s cuteness, so your judgement on Damon matters is obviously heavily biased.

If Damon cares about winning he would waive the NTC and go to the Red Sox. If you think he won’t because he was a Yankee you are delusional.

  66. Purenyyankee August 23rd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Is this a spring Training game? I thought we were in a pennant race? Stump Girardi is an idiot. The bottom of the lineup is a joke.

  67. SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I don’t think Scott would tell Johnny to go to Boston.

I don’t see why folks are upset with Damon. He has no say in the waiver process and has a NTC in his deal for Boston.

Unless the Red Sox want to give him a reason (ie: more money) to go to Boston, I bet he doesn’t waive the NTC.

Really, folks need to stop sounding dumb by calling tonight’s lineup a AAA lineup.

Go find me a AAA lineup that has the first six guys in the order the Yankees have in tonight’s lineup.

Sometimes. Yankee fans need to think before posting.

  68. Joe from Long Island August 23rd, 2010 at 4:08 pm

    Hi –

If Berkman is ready to come off the DL, then that’s the move that takes place, if Nova pitches well tonight – Vaz to DL with dead arm/something like that, and Berkman gets activated. That’s my thought.

  69. SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Inge’s knees are shot. He can’t catch anymore.

He had knee surgery on both knees in the off-season and his right knee hasn’t responded post-surgery.

    He’s not a catching option.

  70. Yankee Trader August 23rd, 2010 at 4:08 pm

What exactly is your suggestion? Some people don’t really seem to have a clue how things work. Girardi has three on the bench, and Jeter may be hurt. He has to keep Posada fresh, and there are 1 too many pitchers on the roster right now. It is up to Cashman to DL Javy and bring up a hitter or take Berkman off the DL. Are we sure it is this monday and not next monday? I dont even remember when he was put on the DL.

Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago people we’re saying how important it was to win the division so the Yanks didn’t have to dace Lee twice in a 5 game series?

Believe Damon like you would a politician. If in fact he lands with Boston, the 6 remaining games with the Yankees will be silly Boston’s World Series.
The Yankees are all too familiar with Damon. He left the Bronx last week going 2 for 18 with Detroit.
Would Boston hassle with Scott Boras for another year with Boston in 2011 ? Very doubtful.

Detroit just waved a white flag on their season. That should boost attendance in the Motor City.

    Question?

I know if you are put on waivers during this period and your club pulls you back, you cannot be put on waivers during this month again.
If Damon invokes his NTC however, do the rules allow him to be placed on waivers again?

  84. Purenyyankee August 23rd, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Is Inge a decent third baseman who could offer more help than Pena, as an insurance option in case A-Rod needs more time off at 3rd in the last 6 weeks of the season?

  88. ac1 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Jeter needs to be DH and Posada needs to catch.
    __

And ARod needs to be at 3rd and Nick Johnson needs to be DH and JAvy and Burnett need to pitch much better.

Doesnt always work out. Jeter was limping around yesterday and Posada has to be kept healthy.

Not ideal, but what can we do?

  89. Chuck58 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:16 pm

2nd time placed on waivers = irrevocable.

  90. Nick in SF August 23rd, 2010 at 4:17 pm

For the record, the pre-season over/under on total Detroit wins was 80.5, which is below .500.

The Tigers are doing about what they were projected to be doing. I hope Johnny stays in Detroit though… I took the over. :?

  91. hardwired7 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I agree, Jerkface, home field advantage trumps all.

I was just pointing out the possible silver lining in “settling” for the WC.

When we went to the LoHud game at Scranton last year, Cervelli caught Nova. So, they’ve probably teamed up a few times, and Cisco knows his stuff. Might be a plus, and might give Nova an additional comfort level.

  96. Jerkface August 23rd, 2010 at 4:19 pm

The Yankees will be able to play 1 to 3 players from Sept in the postseason as injury replacements for Nick Johnson, Aceves, and Marte(maybe).

DJ Mitchell was already promoted to Scranton so unless they are announcing a second promtotion I think Noesi will stay in Trenton for the forseeable future.

The Yanks will most likely not call up Montero until after the AAA season is over.

He’s not on the 40 man and does not have to be added next season either. They will most likely like to hold that spot for someone like Laird who does need to be protected.

There is sone internal debate about that very issue but as of now they are leaning towards not calling him up Sept. 1.

Albie, Romulo and Miranda will get Sept. 1 call ups

I don’t know if this is accurate?

By Tim Dierkes [August 23 at 3:09pm CST]
3:09pm: A no-trade clause does not necessarily give a player the right to prevent his team from handing him over on waivers, according to an MLB Players Association official who spoke to MLBTR this afternoon. In many cases, a player has a non-assignment clause that would prevent trades and waiver claims. However, not all players with no-trade clauses can prevent their teams from handing them over on waivers.

In other words, Damon’s ability to prevent the Tigers from handing him to the Red Sox depends on the wording in his contract.

  118. RayVT August 23rd, 2010 at 4:33 pm

The interesting part of this lineup is that Nunez is at SS and not Pena! This says to me that Pena may be on the way out if they like what they see with Nunez at SS.

    I find CJ Wilson fascinating.

In a 5-year career, his innings high was 73.2 last year.

He’s at 158 at the moment with what, 6, 7 more starts left?

Nolan Ryan is basically telling Tom Verducci to @#$% his @#$%

  122. SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:35 pm

    Ray,

I think that’s more a case of Pena playing more 3B than Nunez and Nunez being more comfortable, especialy on turf, at SS.

  123. LGY August 23rd, 2010 at 4:39 pm

    CJ Wilson is 29.

I believe the Verducci Effect is based on pitchers 25 and younger.

  124. DaSaint007 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Last Friday evening, I saw Girardi in Dolphin’s restaurant in Yonkers. When he passed by, I asked him why he doesn’t utilize speed on the bases more, and he actually said that he still intends to. I always thought that with Gardner, Granderson, Jeter and to a lesser extent Pena and Cervelli, that he’d be playing more hit-and-run, but it hasn’t really happened. Maybe that starts tonight.

  125. Joe from Long Island August 23rd, 2010 at 4:42 pm

  128. Eroc August 23rd, 2010 at 4:43 pm

If you believe Mike F…. Damon had plans on clearing wavers and being traded to Tampa, Sox got word of this and put a claim on him. Now he doesn’t want to go to Boston because they did that.

No idea where he got that from, or if its true, but it’s interesting

  129. mick August 23rd, 2010 at 4:43 pm

yeah why does jeter love to hit that 1st pitch?

  130. GreenBeret7 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Both are better shortstops than any other position, but, Nunez could easily make Pena expendable this winter. Both Russo and Luis Nunez with Trenton could provide the same versatility and more bat, though L. Nunez needs some AAA time.

  131. DaSaint007 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:46 pm

This offseason, their choice of Crawford or Werth could signal which is more important to them long term: speed or power. Crawford can steal 50 bases, Gardner 40, Granderson 30 (he really could), and Jeter 20, if they are all given the green light. Such motion on the basepaths would wreak heavok on pitchers and infields, allowing more runs to be scored per game.

  132. jacksquat August 23rd, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Could Damon be dumb enough to really think he would clear waivers? He’s not owed much for the rest of the year, and his production is decent. Plus Fenway LF is small, which helps his lack of range and arm.

  133. theREALkevin August 23rd, 2010 at 4:48 pm

of course the bottom 3 appears very crappy, but there’s more than enough hitters there to get it done. if Nova can hold Toronto down anything can happen. i’m happy jeter is getting a day off. he was due for one anyhow, but clearly he is nowhere near 100% healthy. he was having problems even running normally to second base. he has to have some type of leg injury and is just playing through it. i wouldn’t mind if he sat the entire series.

  134. RayVT August 23rd, 2010 at 4:49 pm

    SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Good Point! I suspect though that if Nunez can handle the job that Pena may take a trip to AAA as he has options still. If Pena could hit, well everyone knows this!

  135. Jerkface August 23rd, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Such motion on the basepaths would wreak heavok on pitchers and infields, allowing more runs to be scored per game.

The player has to reach base to steal, and not have the base ahead blocked. I don’t think it increases runs scored as much as people wish. Especially for a team which often puts multiple guys on base like the Yankees.

If they did happen to sign Crawford I’d be ok with it because he also provides power.

  136. theREALkevin August 23rd, 2010 at 4:51 pm

pena won’t be sent down as long as A-Rod is on the DL. if he did, they would be left with no backup infielders.

  137. Don Vito A. Bellamo August 23rd, 2010 at 4:53 pm

  138. Carl August 23rd, 2010 at 4:53 pm

  139. Yankee Trader August 23rd, 2010 at 4:54 pm

I’m not wishing this, but if the Yankees fall out of first after the Toronto series and Manny gets placed on waivers, would the Yankees put a claim in to block Tampa?

  140. stuckey99 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:55 pm

    “CJ Wilson is 29.

I believe the Verducci Effect is based on pitchers 25 and younger.”

This is true, but that said I’d assume it’s fairly common for younger pitchers to get dramatically increased workloads from year to year.

I imagine there is very little precedent for pitchers OVER 25 to have 100+ inning leaps.

That only happens if you’re a reliever for an extended time and them suddenly are turned into an effective starter.

Not unprecedented for sure, but I’d imagine a very small sample size exists.

  141. Laura - I Bleed Blue August 23rd, 2010 at 4:55 pm

It is more likely than not that the fans at that rat hole Fenway will still boo Damon. That alone would be enough for me to say No to that deal. He’s gotta be thinking that as well.

More likely the Rays imo. I don’t think the Yanks would have claimed him even if they got the chance.

  144. GreenBeret7 August 23rd, 2010 at 4:56 pm

With Nova being an extreme ground ball pitcher, tonight, the infield really needs to be sharp. He can get strikeouts and doesn’t walk many. Should be interesting to see how well pitcher and defense work together. Nunez knows what his tendencies are.

  145. Yogi Mantle August 23rd, 2010 at 4:57 pm

It will be interesting to see how this stuff with Damon plays out. I can’t really see him wanting to go back to Boston, but you never know. I don’t see him as being the difference maker in putting the RS into the playoffs. They have to count on the Rays or Yankees to go into a fall while they are winning. That is still possible, but its a tough hill for them to climb.

DaSaint007, I wonder if Girardi has had his plans on using speed stumped a bit because Gardner seems to have developed the yips when it comes to stealing bases. He hasn’t attempted a lot of steals lately, and when he does go he gets poor jumps. I remember one of the announcers saying Girardi should just force it for a bit, as just giving him the green light hasn’t been working.

I would love to see Gardner and Crawford on the bases for the Yankees. It might help Gardner to learn how to read the pitchers better having Crawford around. I just don’t think Crawford is going to be a Yankee though. I think he is going to the LA Angels of Anaheim of California. He is the type of player that goes with their way of playing and with how they’ve been this year they might cough up a nice fat contract for him to go there.

  146. Yogi Mantle August 23rd, 2010 at 5:00 pm

The Yankee lineup looks like its built more for defense today, though the offense is likely to take a hit. Or should that be the offense will be tough to find a hit?

  147. LGY August 23rd, 2010 at 5:00 pm

I highly doubt that the Yanks would have claimed Damon. Kearns and Swisher are both producing well right now, and Gardener and Gardener have both recently turned it around.

Also GB7, how does Nunez rate defensively? I don’t recall.

  157. West Coast Yankee Fan August 23rd, 2010 at 5:06 pm

Girardi – with that lineup – why are you bothering to play the game? If you forfeit, you can rest everyone. Yes I am being absurd to make a point. This incessant babying of professional athletes in their thirties during a pennant race is nuts in my opinion.

  158. stuckey99 August 23rd, 2010 at 5:10 pm

“Yes I am being absurd to make a point.”

    Not very effectively, you aren’t.

First 3 batters gets on, Cano hits a grand slam.

Can happen. 4 runs might very well be enough to win a game.

The first 6 batters can’t generate 5 or 6 runs?

    Really?

  159. Joe S formerly of Brooklyn August 23rd, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Here’s a thought: Didn’t someone say Nova throws ground balls? If so, maybe Girardi is thinking he’d rather have someone else play SS for a game, and make the Left side of his infield impervious to seeing-eye singles.

With Cano and Tex on the RH side, it’s hard to get anything but a hard-hit ball through, ain’t it?

SO: Maybe this is to help Nova. And Jeter.

I know this is heresy, and I’ve not watched every game — so I’m probably talking out of my hat (or some other location) — but Derek’s range seems back to being a bit limited (like 2008)

. . . and even A-Rod (altho not an option tonight) has looked less than fully mobile sometimes at 3B. Hasn’t he?

[Now I'm sure someone will provide the links to statistics that prove I'm wrong.]

  165. Niblick August 23rd, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Given how porous the left side of the Yankee infield has been this year (yes, I know Jeter has only 4 errors; so what?) I think this is a good lineup. At least they’ll have a SS who will get to some ground balls.

I don’t think Girardi was looking at offense as much as defense when he put this together. Pena and Nunez might not be threats with the bats but they have good gloves. With Nova being a ground ball pitcher it doesn’t seem like a bad idea, especially since Jeter looked like he was limping a little yesterday.

  168. SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Yeah, because it makes more sense to run mid-30′s players into the ground.

That always makes sense, doesn’t it?

Since Girardi won a WS last year balancing out rest vs. rust with his players, and has the best record in baseball doing the same thing this year, it seems to me, he knows exactly what he’s doing.

Unless of course, you choose to reject the results and just enjoy whining.

  169. upstate kate August 23rd, 2010 at 5:20 pm

so if Johnny D rejects Boston’s offer, what happens next?

  170. Jerkface August 23rd, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Girardi is just going all in with his backups where it makes sense. Give Nova a catcher he is familiar with, at least in passing, and two defenders familiar with him that are better than the regulars (one of whom is hurt anyways). Then you just decide if you want Posada or Kearns against Morrow, and Posada is a switch hitter so there you go.

Then you get the other two games with Kearns/Jeter/Posada ccatching and everything looks a lot better. Instead of 3 games featuring 2 of cervelli/nunez/pena

  171. m August 23rd, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Someone close to Damon has to explain to him the actual odds rather than just the presenting the cliched “well, they have 6 more games with the Rays and the Yankees” argument.

Has Buster seen Johnny play this year.

The Red Sox are 7 out on the loss side with 38 games remaining. They trail the two best teams in baseball. Two teams clearly better than the Red Sox this year, with or without Johnny Damon.

Then again, Buster is the same guy who compared this Rays team with the ’98 Yankees.

I don’t understad how previously smart people feel the need to take stupid pills to go to work at ESPN.

“The only reason why I would be considering it is to help out this team in the future,” Damon said. “I love the Tigers organization and I love the fact that they’re up-front and honest. If somehow they can get a good prospect back, a player that can help this team in the future, it would be beneficial for them. I would like to remain a Tiger, so I think that’s why these next hours are pretty important.”
    ————–

There is no way the Tigers are getting a good prospect for him. It will be some single A nobody like all of Boston’s overrated prospects. He should just stay where he is now. If he goes back he won’t have a lot of fans left. Boston fans aren’t thrilled with him but they will put up with him for a month and Yankee fans will hate and boo him now.

  190. Betsy August 23rd, 2010 at 5:46 pm

LOL Buster is really inane. Apparently he was on 1050 this morning and mentioned that since Andy has been out, the ERA has risen a full point. And? Mosely is not Andy for one and Javy and AJ have been awful. Andy’s absence affects only the pitcher replacing him, Moseley – it has nothing to do with how the other pitchers pitch. Sheesh.

Olney was previously smart – as a writer. I am a B2B writer (about 185,000 levels lower than Olney on the pay scale).

When you write, you get to REWRITE.

Some of the “game” stories Olney wrote for the NY Times when he was the Yankee beat writer were among the best game stories I have ever read. It’s a long time ago.

He doesn’t do that anymore, I don’t think. And maybe the skills that made him great at that do not transfer to whatever he’s doing now.

Olney is now a TALKER. He didn’t get stupid, he’s just not putting his best foot forward. You remember that old Beatles line — “you may be a lover, but you ain’t no dancer”…..?

  193. Yank1 August 23rd, 2010 at 5:47 pm

“Damon surprised it was the Red Sox”

That’s because they tried to block you from going to one of those teams. Really want to relocate to a team that you left on bad terms for 38 days, just for a hail mary shot at a playoff birth?

  196. Captain Clutch August 23rd, 2010 at 5:51 pm

Boston only claimed him so he wouldn’t go to Tampa so it’s not like he is really wanted or needed there. He will be in the same situation he is now, out of the play offs, on a bad team just a different city. Damon is obviously very easy to please. Whatever team he is on he claims it’s the greatest place ever.

  197. SJ44 August 23rd, 2010 at 5:52 pm

The Yankees are still third overall in ERA in the AL…….ahead of the “pitching rich” Boston Red Sox.

Funny how that got lost in his analysis.

Damon barely plays the OF anymore and hasn’t had a good year at the plate.

If Buster wants to believe Damon will lead the Sox to the promised land, more power to him.

Both Johnny and Scott screwed up this off-season when they didn’t take the Yankees 2/14 offer.

They have been chasing their tails since.

It’s a shame but, when you make decisions, good and bad, you wear them.

Johnny has had to wear his dumb winter decisions all season.

I highly doubt that the Yanks would have claimed Damon. Kearns and Swisher are both producing well right now, and Gardener and Gardener have both recently turned it around.

Also GB7, how does Nunez rate defensively? I don’t recall.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

His improvement on defense from last year has been dramtic. He always had range, arm and soft hands. His problem was more footworl.

Not that it means a lot in the majors, but, he was rated as the best defensive shortstop with the best arm of all AAA (or International Leauge) shortstops.

  200. Yank1 August 23rd, 2010 at 5:55 pm

Sox schedule from here on out includes the likes of

    @ Tampa
    vs. White Sox
    @ White Sox
    @Oakland
@Seattle (not good team, but WC trips are never easy)
    vs. Yankees
    @ Yankees
    vs. Rays

Unless they sweep or go 5-1 vs. TB/NY the rest of the way, how are they making up 6-7 games with that schedule? Even our remaining schedule is easier than that. Tampa’s is obviously a cakewalk outside the key division games.

So they are going to make this potential Damon-Sox reunion as some kind of feel-good story and transcendent event that will propel the Sox into the playoffs?

lol the only reason he was even claimed was to block Tampa and the Yankees, not because they felt he was the key to their “playoff” run.

  205. GreenBeret7 August 23rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm

NYYs team ERA is nearly a half a run better than Boston’s. Pretty significant at this time of the year. They’ve also passed the Blue Jays, White Sox, Mariners and Texas in the last couple of weeks. Not bad for a decrepit, aging pitching staff.

  206. Betsy August 23rd, 2010 at 6:01 pm

I assume that if Damon goes to the Sox, he will get a rather different reception when the Sox come to Town than he did when the Tigers did.

  207. Captain Clutch August 23rd, 2010 at 6:01 pm

I am sure after what happened in the off season Cashman wouldn’t of brought Damon back at the trade deadline/waivers but he would of been a better option than Berkman. He would of cost about $3m less and will probably hit more than Berkman. But after the Boras crap I don’t think he was an option.

  210. Lou-in-Vermont August 23rd, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Looking at the Red Sox plight mathematically: with ~6 weeks remaining, the Sox are 6 games in the loss column behind Tampa for the wild card. Making up 6 games in 6 weeks is not an insurmountable task. Assuming 7 games per week, Boston could be 5-2 each week and Tampa 4-3 each week, and voila – we have a tie for the wild card. Seems do-able to me.

  211. Joe from Long Island August 23rd, 2010 at 6:06 pm

For all we carry on – I really don’t think Theo and company are dumb. Very likely, they know exactly that Damon can no longer play the OF, which is what they need. They already have a surplus of DH types, so he doens’t make much sense for them.

More likely is that they wanted to block him from going to the Yanks or Tampa, where he would provide a lefty bat.

Boston would probably be pissed if they did wind up with them; they’d have to cut a more productive player, or release him and be responsible for his remaining salary.

  216. tyanksfan36 August 23rd, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I think this will be an interesting game. Yes, its a light hitting group but Pena can infied bunt/single. Nunez has hit in the 2 games that he has started. The only thing I worry about is Cervelli behind the plate. I think it would make more sense to start Posada behind the plate because he has the experience with dealing with so many different pitchers over the years that if Nova were to start getting in trouble, he might know the right thing to say to calm him down.
When it comes to hitting, if you look at the boxscore for the past couple of games, Jeter has gone 1-4 or 2-5, Tex the same. Granted some of those hits have come at important times but Nunez did have the go-ahead hit in the game the other day. I think as long as they can back Nova up defensively, then they should do fine. They will have Cano and Tex and Swish to back them up offensively as well. I don’t think this lineup is weak at all really.

As for Banuelos, I hope he does great in his first start for Trenton tonight, I was a bit upset when I heard that he got promoted along with Betances because I have liked watching them in Tampa, im just glad I went to see them pitch at every opportunity.

Hopefully he gets some great run support because I think that was the big reason that he never got a win down here, also the bullpen in Tampa is horridly unreliable outside of Venditte.

  217. Mark-Cant Touch This August 23rd, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Unless the Red Sox are ready to play 28-8 they are not making the playoffs. If the Yankees miss the playoffs it will be because they collapse not because the Soxs make some big push.

Aside from the fact that there are not 7 games per week the rest of the season, for a team in the Sox with a .568 WP all season to suddenly play .700 baseball for 6 weeks and at the same time a team in the Rays with a .613 WP all season to suddenly play .571 baseball for 6 weeks is incredibly unlikely.

“The Sox have a shot because they aren’t THAT far behind and they play the Yankees (and the Rays, I think). That’s a big deal……………”

Q: How far back do you need to be with 37 games remaining to not have a shot?

Yankees play .500 (they’re 19-14 since Pettitte got injured) the rest of the way, Sox need to go 25-12 just to catch them. 26-11 to pass them.

And I’ll remind you, this is IF the Yankees go .500 in a 38 game stretch for the first time since early 2008.

Yanks go 21-17, and the Sox need to 27-10 to catch them, 28-9 to pass them.

Anyone thinking “it’s possible” aren’t duly considering the premise.

  225. Mark-Cant Touch This August 23rd, 2010 at 6:15 pm

If the Soxs play a little better than .500 for the rest of the year its an accomplishment.

  226. Crash August 23rd, 2010 at 6:16 pm

I’m glad the red sox claimed Damon. They blocked tampa from getting him good job by Theo. Boston is not catching the yankees. I rather have Damon on the red sox than on tampa.

  227. Yogi Mantle August 23rd, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Teams have lost 7 game leads before, even this late in the season. The trouble is for the Sox to make up ground they would have to count on those ahead of them to fall off while they continue winning.

And then what? The Sox probably would have a hard time getting out of the first round.

I notice that Tito declined to comment on Damon. That, to me, sounds more like this is planned as a block move over a real desire to acquire him. They don’t need a DH, he doesn’t play the field much, so its like the RS would be getting a high priced bench player.

Damon didn’t get great applause in his return to Boston since joining the Tigers, yet he was hearing a lot of applause and people standing when he went to Yankee Stadium. He gets paid either way, though the RS will probably have to sweeten the deal for him to waive his NTC.

It will be interesting to see what happens, but I am leaning toward Damon staying with the Tigers.

    Ray,

I think that’s more a case of Pena playing more 3B than Nunez and Nunez being more comfortable, especialy on turf, at SS.

    ************************************************

Why would Nunez be more comfortable on turf? He plays all his home games at SWB on the same grass field the Yankees use in NY.

  229. Faiaz August 23rd, 2010 at 9:37 pm
