Steinbrenner monument being dedicated next month

The Steinbrenner family has released a public statement and announced plans for a monument dedication to George Steinbrenner.

“We remain profoundly grateful and touched by the many expressions of sympathy and support from so many. We wish to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers, which we continue to hold close. We are especially appreciative that our family’s privacy was respected as we grieved the loss of George.

“We know we will always share George’s memory with Yankees fans everywhere, and a monument in his honor to be located in Monument Park will reflect the special connection, appreciation and responsibility that George felt for New York Yankees’ fans everywhere as they were always uppermost in his mind.”

The Monument Park dedication will be held in New York on Monday, September 20, 2010 at Yankee Stadium, prior to that evening’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

There will be a tribute to his life in Tampa at the opening game of spring training in March of 2011.

is there a trick to actually getting into Monument Park? we always get closed out. We were there when the stadium gates opened this time, and by the time we got to the line, it was closed :(

If the person whose name you are switching it to has a prior credit history with Con Edison- very easy.

If they don’t, they may require a deposit from the person to get it changed over.

I linked that story on Selig’s statue earlier. Like I said then, why spend money on the Selig statue when they could just stick the real Selig up there. He’s a statue anyway.

  11. pat August 24th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Jeter was born in NJ and moved to Michigan. He was always a Yankee fan because of his grandmother. His father was a Tiger’s fan.

Were you people not listening the 100 times he’s given that interview? The fan part comes right after the story about his father beating him at The Price is Right.

A few observations from watching a few minutes of the Little League WS over the past few days:

-Having the umps wear a wireless mic could be interesting if translated to MLB

-The instant replays have been efficient and correct

-Yankees have a large Q Score among 12 year old boys from Taipei that the Yankees should be looking for a way to profit from but a very low Q Score from 12 year old boys in Saudi Arabia that they need to work on.

Well if you join Yankees Universe, you have access to go in the closest gate to the park a little early and then just be there when the gate opens and you should have no problem.

  19. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Yeah, because Girardi has done such a poor job managing this team.

I don’t think any games or World Championships have been won by the manager. What has he actually done to help? Took the team to an arcade before the season started?

  22. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

That’s the problem. You don’t think.

  23. pat August 24th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Take the Yankee Stadium tour and you’ll get plenty of time to look around Monument Park and see lots of other things too.

  24. Don August 24th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

SJ, do you think Damon will go to Boston?

  25. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Ya know, I was reading the Post today (glutton for punishment..) and that article about the Cubs going after Girardi.

Now, I don’t think Joe is going anywhere. I think he’s actually been a fantastic fit for this ball club since Torre left. I especially like how he and his staff handle young pitchers and the pen.

But a lot of Yankees fans seem to think there is no reason why Girardi might want to manage the Cubs. Firstly, its where he’s from. The home town thing has to be a draw. The other thing, and this might be a stretch, but ya gotta wonder, is if he would enjoy the seemingly impossible challenge of turning the Cubs into a winner. Again, probably playing devil’s advocate here, but he’s already got rings with the Yanks as a player and a manager.. maybe he’s a masochist and wants to try to bring some glory to Chi-Town??

According to the Yankee Stadium Guide online: http://mlb.mlb.com/nyy/ballpar.....ent%20Park

    Monument Park

Monument Park, a museum in and of itself, recognizes former Yankees greats. On game days, it opens with the gates and remains accessible until 45 minutes prior to the game start time (subject to capacity limitations). Signage directs guests to Monument Park. Yankee Stadium staff is also available to assist guests.

Honestly SJ I respect a lot of the commentary you have on here during the game….especially during the last couple of weeks. But why is this blog treated as if its run by you? Did someone appoint you as the almighty voice of reason? Let people say what they want.

  32. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Shame – You’re right, reading the Post does make you a glutton for punishment, lol.

Seriously, I think the only thing Joe gets out of the Cubs’ opening is a bit of bargaining power in negotiating his new contract with the Yanks. Besides, the rumor is that Ryne Sandberg is in line for the Cubs job, for what it’s worth. That may have played into them bypassing AlanTrammel as interim. (Not that he seemed to do all that well as manager of Detroit a few years back.)

  33. upstate kate August 24th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

  34. jacksquat August 24th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

In regards to Damon going to Boston, I don’t think the fans or the Yanks/RS rivalry have anything to do with it, contrary to what some people seem to think. I think the only factors are his relationship with the RS management, and whether he even wants to bother moving for the last month of the season.

  35. Pat M. August 24th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Chuck58…..You should have been here for late last night activities……Matt taking on Tricia was classic, he picked the wrong person to tangle with….Then we had some twits giving GB nonsense about corked bats…..SJ’s season’s patience may have come to an expiration……Stupidity is different than ignorance…..Ignorance can be resolved

  36. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

You can say whatever you want. Just don’t whine when you get called on it. Especially when you write something as ignorant as wanting to get rid of the manager.

If you write it, be prepared to back it up. If you can’t, don’t write it.

    Don,

Only way I don’t see Damon going to Boston is if he wants to stick it to the Red Sox.

Johnny likes the drama and attention.

It does underscore though how badly he and Boras played the market in the off-season.

Being a vagabond, going from team to team, is no way to end a very good career.

  37. m August 24th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Damon and/or Manny is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that we still (barely) control our own destiny. We need to do that.

  38. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Being a vagabond, going from team to team, is no way to end a very good career.

Reminds me of a line in Roger Kahn’s book, The Boys of Summer, where Stanley Woodward, the legendary sports editor of the old NY Herald Tribune, after being banished to a job in Miami in the mid-50s (pre- central air) says to Kahn – “Shouldn’t they let an old man finish in New York?”

Johnny should have finished his career in NY. It’s the only way to go out, for a winner, with a winner.

    Its science!

  45. Chuck58 August 24th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Aye, Pat M, I went back and read last night’s postings this morning.
Who-ee! Musta been an interesting evening…..

  46. CB August 24th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

If Ivan Nova can put up a few more starts like the one he had last night before the end of this season, he would have significant trade value this winter.

Prospects like Nova who aren’t blue chippers increase their value inordinately if they demonstrate success at the major league level.

If a guy like Dellin Betances dominates AA and AAA teams will know he’s a legitimate talent. But with guys like Nova, questions are out until they perform at the major league level.

With the stuff he showed last night – if he can sustain it and that level of performance – the yankees will have a very valuable chip this winter. 23 years old cost contained starter who throws 93-95 touching 98 and is ready to step into a major league rotation next season. That’s an enormously valuable asset.

I’m not saying the yankees should trade Nova. I’m just commenting on what that kind of performance will do for his market worth.

  47. Chuck58 August 24th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

That’s actually a good question that CB raises…
if Ivan Nova keeps up the good work, does he fit best in the rotation going forward, or as a trade chip?

  49. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2010 at 12:58 pm

CB – absolutely. I have to think that’s part of the calculation, for the Yanks to both see what they’ve got, possibly have an alternative to running Vaz out there again, and to showcase. Whether to trade or not will depend on both his performance, and what Andy Pettitte decides to do w/r 2011.

  50. pat August 24th, 2010 at 12:58 pm

    Kate

They do have tours the day of a game but you may get access to less places (clubhouse, batting cages) because they may be in use by the players.

My parents made a day of it this year. Did the tour, ate at NYY Steak and then stayed for the game.

if you opined differently , in this case, it appears you are in support of GB7, then speak while the discussion was on going.

this is a childish and cowardly way of discrediting people.

  53. Eduardo August 24th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

The only twit is the guy who thinks that he can hear corked bats over his television speakers – from the likes of Jason Bartlett and Ben Zobrist.

If the players, the managers, the umpires, and millions of viewers at home can’t hear it, then what makes this twit think that he can?

  54. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Face, I didn?t reference you did I ???? How ever a doctored ( corked bat ) does and always will aid a hitter

Well I was one of the people giving GB7 the business on corked bat. And you must have missed the actual scientific evidence which states a doctored bat does not and never will aid a hitter.

More than likely a placebo effect, or that hitter should be swinging a lighter bat to begin with.

  55. blake August 24th, 2010 at 1:02 pm

    CB,

Yea if the Yanks sign Lee and Andy comes back then they very well may look to move Nova because there will be no room in the 2010 rotation and some of the other kids may be ready by 2011…he gives them options and as you say he may have some significant trade value this winter if he performs well down the stretch.

  56. upstate kate August 24th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

thanks Pat, I will keep that in mind for next year’s visit.

  57. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I’m assuming that Cliff Lee winds up a Yankee; not a great assumption, I think.

That gives them a rotation of CC, AJ, Lee, and Hughes (not necessarily in that order). Now if Andy comes back, great. If not, then they could potentially slip in Nova. Or, they could use Nova to bring back a player of value – a Matt Kemp, say for the sake of argument. The catch there is that they would still have an opening in the rotation to fill. (This is assuming that Vazquez is not brought back.) But depending on the return that the Nova deal brings back, that might be something they’re willing to deal with.

  58. Eduardo August 24th, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Not quite on the same career level as these guys, but, his career is following along the Winfield, Gaylord Perry, Reggie Jackson, Ricky Henderson path of going from team to team looking for a warm bed, when he could have just gone one or two teams and been identified with that team. all of them are identified with at least two teams, but, really belongs to none of them.

  60. Cashmoney August 24th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I read ”Matt Vs Tricia” this morning, I thought Matt ,as usual, has something interesting to say. He back up his argument with logics and statistical. Everyone knows he is negative , but it’s way better some retarded passive aggressive shenanigans that goes on this blog.

  61. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Joe – I agree Girardi is likely staying put and hopefully leading us to more World Series titles, but there are some aspects of managing the Cubs that could intrigue him.

Cashmoney, I was late to the action last night so I wasn’t awarded the chance to chime in…..I used corked bats during bp and there is a difference…….I certainly apologize for the offensive twit remark………Some years ago I was fortunate to attend a sportswriter dinner honoring the late Jimmy Reese who was Babe’s roommate on the road for a season or two……Great first hand stories on The Bambino…….Did you know that the reason The Babe used such a heavy bat ???? It was to slow down his hands….Look at some video of Ruth’s swing, his hands are a blur ……..My final point, GB was right…….

Use a lighter bat then. Corking a bat doesn’t actual give the bat any special helpful properties.

  67. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

    CB,

    Agreed re: Nova.

    Pat M,

That’s what I don’t get about the whole Damon thing.

If he played two more years in NY, hit 40 more homers, 300 more hits, 200 more runs scored, and perhaps another ring, he’s coming up on HOF numbers.

From a financial AND baseball perspective, it made no sense going to Detroit.

If he took the 2/14 offer the Yankees gave him, he would have been set.

Now? He’s just bouncing around and its sad to see.

I talked to one Yankee this spring who BEGGED Johnny to come back. He told him going to Detroit would be the worst possible career move for him this late in his career.

    Turns out, he was right.

Unfortunately, Johnny didn’t listen to him.

  68. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Hey, like I said, I don’t think Girardi is going anywhere. I think he’s gonna be around a while, actually.

Right now though.. I’m more interested in the science of corked bats..

  69. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

“This result suggests that corked bat would produce batted-ball speeds about 1 mph lower than a normal wood bat” – From Science.

Probably based on the fact that waiver claims go in at the same time and then its done by league and record?

  73. Cashmoney August 24th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

    Pat M
very interesting story, it represents more of the anecdotal evidences than scientific. Either way, I have no problem whose side of argument you are on. thank you for explaining you action.
i apologize for calling you ‘cowardly’ now that the reasons are represented.

I am only interested in being ‘fair’ in the case.

  74. Yogi Mantle August 24th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

In some ways I think the position that the RS put Damon in are quite uncomfortable for him. Fans in Boston ripped him and even in his return wearing the Tiger uniform wasn’t all that great for him. For any applause he got, he got booed twice as much.

I think the real factor would be about how does this move or stay impact his next deal. Not going to the RS means they aren’t going to drive up his price tag. Not that I think the RS would re-sign him after this little stint either, but if he turns them down rather than going there it means Boras can’t even hint there is RS interest for him.

I do think this move was more a block than a big desire to bring him back, but its not like they couldn’t use him. It just seems they have too many DH types for their current needs, Lowell and Ortiz and Damon sharing DH? Damon off the bench? Damon in the OF. Seems like it isn’t a great move for him getting a lot of playing time.

  75. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

The purpose of a lighter bat is to get it through the strike zone faster. You can’t get a lighter bat without sacrificing the length and bat surface that the hitter needs to reach both sides of the plate. So, using a smaller bat isn’t the answer. Neither is drying all of the mositure from the bat to make it lighter. all that does is make the bat explode, which is what’s happening now.

  76. Joe from Long Island August 24th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Gee, people apologizing, being civil…. What’s this place coming to?

  77. Doreen August 24th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Isn’t the bottom line, with whatever aids players choose to use, that half of the reason for using whatever it is is because the players think it will work? And logic and science don’t necessarily factor into the equation at all.

  78. austinmac August 24th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Damon and Boras really are being shown to have blown last off-season. His choices are stay with a team that wants him out or go to a place he has likely insulted and who has very much insulted him. One hopes that propective clients see what Boras tactics can result in. Damon is certainly not alone in being left out to dry.

Face, whatever….Go swing a doc’d bat and come back and tell then tell me…..In the instructional league camps, they actually had doctored bats for hitting drills, especially grooved bats …….Now a days I must ask due to aluminium bats that have dominated the game over the past 25 years or so, Face have you ever hit with a wooden bat at all ????? It’s about bat speed……….SJ, I remember you telling that story back in March about Damon…..Still blows my mind how he & Boras misread the market

  80. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

You can?t get a lighter bat without sacrificing the length and bat surface that the hitter needs to reach both sides of the plate.

But at the same time you’re reducing the mass of the bat, negating your speed gains by reducing the energy that will be transferred into the ball, while at the same time making your bat more likely to explode.

  81. champ809 August 24th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Nova can pitch out of his mind and he alone will not get you Matt Kemp.

Teams were calling about him @ the deadline and the Yanks refused to include him in both the Lee and Haren offers so teams know how highly the Yanks valued him. Especially after stepping forward this year the way he has. The Yanks have felt for 3 yrs that all Nova lacked was more aggressiveness and attitude on the mound to fulfill what they thought could be a solid #3 starter’s profile. Ironically I’m sure guys like Newman,Oppenheimer and Contreras liked seeing that display of fiestiness from Ivan last night and hope he pitches with that kind of spunk from here on out.

CB is spot on in that if Nova has 3 or 4 more starts like he had last night showing that kind of stuff- 97-98mph fastballs in the 6th and 7th innings of games with command- then he will be a hot hot commodity this offseason.

Guys like Laird, Nunez, Phelps, Warren, Noesi and Nova will once again put the Yanks in the catbirds seat come this nov. in the winter trade market.

Also it can’t be understated how much the performances of ex- guys like AJax, Tabata, Kennedy, Coke and even Dunn and Clippard augment the stature of our prospects in the eyes of other GMs as these guys have alll stepped in played at high levels for their respective teams.

  82. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Now a days I must ask due to aluminium bats that have dominated the game over the past 25 years or so, Face have you ever hit with a wooden bat at all ????? It?s about bat speed

I own a huge Babe Ruth model wooden bat. I think I swing that sucker around 1 mph. Just like taking hacks with a heavier bat and switching to a lighter bat don’t actually improve your ability to swing faster, science has proven that doctored bats don’t really work.

you know what does work? Doctoring a metal bat. For sciency reasons.

  83. Chuck58 August 24th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

    Doreen, that is exactly right.
    Ballplayers are a superstitious lot
    [Turk Wendell comes to mind].

  84. blake August 24th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

I’ve used corked bats before and it does feel more solid when you hit the ball…now whether that increases performance or cuts down on vibration making it seem (more solid) I don’t know.

I’d be interested to see study done on balls hit on the sweet spot vs balls not hit on the sweet spot of corked and uncorked bats.

  85. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I like Nova but I’m not sure he has a place on the yankees. I would definitely see what he could be traded for if he shows good in Sept for the yankees. I hope he can get his curve down next start. It really hurt him that he couldn’t drop it into the zone, given how nice his fastball and change looked.

  86. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

And logic and science don?t necessarily factor into the equation at all.

Which is why Phiten necklaces should be outlawed. They are as performance enhancing as corked bats and yet Bud Selig shows his red sox bias by allowing Josh Beckett to wear 12 of the suckers!

  87. austinmac August 24th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I often wonder why pitchers are labeled back of the rotation starters. Pitchers like Nova certainly have enough fastball with what appeared to be movement to be a top end guy. His curveball looked sharp and large as well. Who can say if his or any other pitcher will develop command. What is the basis of such an evaluation when others with less fastball are considered top end guys?

Tampa could have put in a claim along with the RedSox and the Yanks and Boston would have been awarded the claim based on waiver claim order.

What Detroit is explaining is that Tampa never put in a claim on him suggesting that the Rays weren’t interested in him.

  90. Tom in N.J. August 24th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I remember seeing an episode of http MythBusters on corked bats and other baseball myths. Turns out a ball hit by a corked bat travels at only half the speed of a ball hit by a regular bat. Something to do with the cork acting like a sponge absorbing the energy. Also less mass in a corked bat..

  91. pat August 24th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Sox saw the Damon claim as win/win. Kept him away from others if he says no and they have a story for fans to follow in Boston if the whole playoff thing doesn’t work out for them.

  92. blake August 24th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

In the study I suggested….my hypothesis would be that off center hits may perform better in the corked bats due to decrease in vibration….therfore functionally making the small sweet spot on a wooden bat larger. I’m just guessing….let’s do a study.

  93. Pat M. August 24th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Blake, just to to a good batting cage with some lumber, you’ll see right away….If memory serves me, I think 32 oz’ers came at a 34 length……I think ( it;s been awhile ) that there was always a -2 from length and weight…..SJ is more updated , what’s Tony’s bat orders like ????

At no time could you ever decide that Whitey Ford, Greg Maddux or Tom Glavine were front of the rotation pitchers unless you watched them for a few years and said to yourself, “Hell, I could hit this guy.”, and look at his numbers and all they ever did was win. If they don’t look dominating, they can’t be top of the rotation pitchers.

Me, I only look at the results.

  95. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

?.my hypothesis would be that off center hits may perform better in the corked bats due to decrease in vibration

I would think off center hits on a corked bat would increase the likelihood of the bat exploding.

  96. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

    Pat M,

    Tony’s bat orders are 31/34. 31 oz/34 length.

  97. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Cliff Lee is not going to Detroit, Ed Price, lol………

Skip Javy in Chicago and let Nova take his place. Skip Phil against Toronto and let Nova pitch; hopefully that, along with taking him out early (though that’s sketchy; that will only happen in a blowout) will suffice in terms of the innings limits. Javy simply can not pitch right now. It’s not fair to him or the team to send him out there…………. This is going to be a very tight race and he simply can’t be competitive.

  98. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

How long does Damon have until he makes a final decision? Until tomorrow? Or did I just pull that outta nowhere?

  99. Erin August 24th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

JackCurryYES Yanks liked Ivan Nova’s stuff and composure last night. Expect them to find a way to keep starting him.

  100. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

It makes no sense for Joe to leave for Chicago. If he wanted to spend time with his ill father, why even lobby for the job here? He could have just spent the past few years in Chicago. On the field, please- there’s no comparison in terms of the teams fielding contenders (though I think Brandon Tierney mentioned on the Wheelhouse that Joe might think twice about returning given the touchy contract situations with Jeter, Po, etc… Actually, Po is silly – he won’t be returning after 2011). If he really wants to go to Chicago, though, I’m fine with letting him go and not getting into some bidding war with the Cubs for him.

  103. Pat M. August 24th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

SJ, so is the limit now -3 ???? I really can’t remember……I used to use the same thin handle bat as Mays used, the model # escapes me, but I though it was 31 oz 33 length, and that was the lightest and whippiest bat cut…..Early 70′s seems so long ago

  104. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I don’t know; do you think the Yankees would be comfortable with a back end of AJ and Nova? AJ can expected to remain the same or get worse and Nova, who knows? Even Phil is not rock solid given how many 2nd year starters (and that’s essentially what he is) struggle………..

What I don’t get is why Nova, who apparently throws very hard, is not a blue chipper.

  105. blake August 24th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

    Pat M,
Oh I’ve used them before and as I said I do remember feeling a difference…but I never knew if the difference was in actual performance or just reduced vibration making it feel more solid. I probably don’t have as much experience with the lumber as you though as I really only played with them it wood bat summer leagues.

  106. m August 24th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Reading with an iTouch. Skimming over the post. Read this “we all know we will share George’s money.”. Need to go eye doctor soon. I’ll also ask him what his opinion on corked bats.

  107. Jerkface August 24th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

What I don?t get is why Nova, who apparently throws very hard, is not a blue chipper.

Could be things like command of secondary pitches, quality of secondary pitches, fastball command, ability to hide the ball, motion, actual game results from the minors.

  108. sunny615 August 24th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Maybe I’m being overreactive here (still a little miffed at Bautista), but I hope Moseley knocks Bautista on his butt a couple of times tonight. Just pump it inside and if he walks he walks, but keep it in. Can’t seem to let this one go…?

  109. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

Well Jack Curry, the way for the Yankees to find a way to keep starting him is to skip Phil once and Javy indefinitely………

Its about the entire pitching package and using that to make a long term projection on a pitcher.

Pat M., Mays bat model number was an Hillerich and Bradsby S-2.

  125. Jeff NJ August 24th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Moseley is auditioning for more starts tonight. If he is mediocre then Nova takes over the slot. Either way they can keep both on the roster unless an emergency comes up before sept 1st. I think Moseley will be mediocre tonight, like 4 runs in 5 innings and Nova will steal the spot as he should.

  126. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Thanks guys! Sorry I missed the countdown, I was too eager to see how many people thought Johnny would be a member of the “Nation” ;)

  127. Yankee Trader August 24th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

    Betsy-

If AJ could diligently work on his changeup he wouldn’t be as predictable when his curve is off.

Have to see how Moseley pitches tonight- he was not very good last two starts, having given up 4 runs in each, one in 5 innings the other in 4.

Have a feeling that Damon after talking to Detroit GM, accepts deal to Boston, and when Manny gets placed on waivers that White Sox put in a claim-hopefully he’s not on team when we play the White Sox this weekend.

  128. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

I don’t think so, Jeff. Nova would be taking Javy’s starts – or one of Phil’s.

    Pat M,

Will do. I don’t have a schedule yet and I have to work around my football schedule to make it out there for weekday games in October.

As soon as I get a schedule and can coordinate the dates, I’ll let you know.

  132. G. Love August 24th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I tend to think that if Nova has 3-4 more starts like last night and shows improvement, he’ll be retained and in competition for the rotation next year.

Having a low cost starter in the back of the rotation would be a boon for the Yankees as they will have to dole out the legends seata contracts to Jeter & Mo.

I believe Lee will be here.

    Not so sure about Andy.

If the Yankees put out a rotation of CC, Lee, Hughes, AJ & Nova to start, it saves money they can spend in other areas.

Nova doing well here keeps him here in my opinion. Spending 60 million on CC, AJ and Lee (conceivably) and 4 million on Hughes & Nova helps keep the Yankees budget manageable.

If Andy is determined to pitch another season, that’s a different story. Still, he was an all star this season and then spent the rest of the season on the DL. Cashman might think keeping the low cost Nova is a better bet than bringing back Andy at 11 million.

If Any pulls his Brett Favre “will he or won’t he” routine this off season, he might be disappointed in the offer he gets to return.

That said, I’m not sold on Nova yet. Everything he threw last night was high in the zone. He did well last night, but I’m not sure we can expect that kind of performance on a consistent basis.

One of the things I was truly shocked by with the Jays is how low a lot of the on base percentages of the starters are.

They’re a HR hitting team. If you keep the ball in the park you beat them.

  133. Mike_Boston August 24th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

My take on what constitutes being a blue chip is that you have been highly regarded since being scouted initially or at least very early on in the process. Someone like Nova really came out of nowhere and came on in the last season only. While someone like say Montero has been a blue chip since the day he was drafted. Of course the stuff has to translate like SJ says but you can’t all of a sudden come on the scene after being a 20th round pick for example, start to show crazy potential and be considered a blue chip.

  134. Yankee Trader August 24th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Betsy- If Moseley doesn’t pitch well, Nova could very well take his next turn in the rotation. Girardi isn’t committing to insuring either Vazquez or Moseley will be assured of a starting spot in the rotation. However doubtful, maybe Cashman puts in a claim for a starter before the end of this month.

  135. austinmac August 24th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Since I have purchased both wood and metal batsfor my college playing son, I have a familiar expensively acquired knowledge of bats.

All metal bats beyond the pony league age are -3 in length to weight ratio. Adult wooden bats, particularly the good ones, are often -2. There is some slight variance, but not much. None selling in the mass market are more than equal. They do market some “light” wood bats with a -3, but they tend to break in my experience.

  136. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

    http://riveraveblues.com/

Yanks now have some options with how they want to work in Nova. It really depends on how often they want Phil to be skipped; I’m hoping just once. I know RAB suggests skipping him against the A’s, but I suggest skipping him against the Jays who will have seen him 3 times already.

  137. GreenBeret7 August 24th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Interesting notes on the AFL. Dom Mattingly and Ted Simmons will be managing this year. Part of Mattingly’s team will be comprised of the Yankee prospects.

  138. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

GLove, I don’t know that the Yankees want to go with 2 kids and an inconsistent/mediocre AJ in the rotation again. Now if they think Phil is truly established they might, but to me that’s an open ended question – to which we won’t have an answer until next year.

  139. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Yankee Trader, the Yanks have been pleased with Moseley. Unless he completely falls apart, I don’t see him being replaced.

Considering Phil a “kid” when he and Kennedy were trying to be #4 and #5 made sense, but I dunno about giving him that label now. Hughes has been starting in games for us since 2007 at this point. I don’t think we can consider him a rookie any longer and I think considering him an unknown quantity at this point is also pretty unfair given what he’s done this year.

I’m not suggesting we have blind faith in him, because during a season a lot can change with a rotation (imagine: CC going down with an injury? Good lord, just typing that made me cringe..) but I sure as heck trust him as a starting pitcher at this point.

My other assignments to date aren’t on the West Coast.

However, I haven’t finalized my schedule for the final 3 weekends in October. There could be a WC game or two in there. I will let you know.

  150. fiveironfromfenway August 24th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Next year’s rotation will be very interesting.
There is always the possibility that Joba will be back in the starting 5 (although probably unlikely). There is also Phelps, Noesi, Mitchell, Warren, Brackman, Betances, Banuelos who all may get some shots at some point next season. There is an abundance of arms now in the top two levels of the Yankee system.

  151. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Shame, I did not say Phil was an unknown quantity, but neither is he completely established. Many pitchers struggle in their 2nd year – and this is basically Phil’s first year (2007 and 2008 were a long time ago and he missed huge chunks of those seasons).

I also didn’t say that I didn’t trust him for next year or that he wouldn’t be good.

SJ…Just let me know…..Do you have any West Coast assignments this season ??? San Diego, Bay Area, Phoenix ???? GB, Thnaks, that does seem familar , S-2, it was like hitting with a stickball bat

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Three of the biggest bats I ever saw used in a game were Dick allen’s 40 ounce, Nellie Fox’s 37 ounce bottle bat and Bob Cerv’s 36 ounce bat. Those things looked like war clubs. Mantle used Cerv’s bat in 1961 when he pulled a muscle in his arm so bad that the arm turned black and blue. He used the bat in in the September series against Detroit at YS. He said it hurt so bad to swing and miss that this bat made him swing easier, but, his swing was still fast because of that incredible strength. I remember that he was able to hammer 2 homers on the Sunday game to give him 50. Right and right center. I know one was off Jim Bunning, not sure about the other. I know NYY hit a few homers in that game.

  161. Shame Spencer August 24th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

No problem Betsy, seeing as how I didn’t say you said any of those things, we’re ok, no?

My only point was that it isn’t as if we’d be entering next season with two rookies in the rotation as we had tried in the past. We’re really only worried about a #5 starter at this point whose name might end up being Andy Pettite.

    Good afternoon.

Did you take any action after last night’s happenings (besides cleaning, and checking the status of your weapons) ?

How did your imposter get your name and address ? Any idea ?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

afternoon, MTU. Not sure, but, I assume that it can be tracked thru a couple of sites that print out addresses that are traced to utility companies….either that, or somebody with connections to LoHud and can pull up the addresses. Why idiots feel the need to pull that crap is beyond me. What pisses me is the gutless wonder bringing the twins into this BS.

  167. Betsy August 24th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Shame, I don’t think we’re on the same page. You responded to my post – at least, I assume it was my post because you rebutted several things I said.

My point was I don’t think (if Andy retires) that I would feel overly comfortable with a backend of the rotation of AJ and Nova. For me, AJ is really a #5 at this point………and Nova would certainly have his struggles. I’m just suggesting that Phil could go either way next year – just like all young pitchers. He could improve greatly or he could struggle (based on this years workload or whatever). That was the discussion at hand – potential starting rotation and whether Nova would be a part of it. I’m just not sure he will be, even with Lee and without Andy.

Things are good here. Not heading to Chi-town this weekend. Playing in a slow pitch softball tourney instead. That said, the Cell is my least favorite place to watch a game that I’ve been to. The Pale Hose fans are probably the rudest I’ve encountered. Plus, you have to get lower level seats because the upper deck is ridiculously high. It’s understandable that some people would get crosswise to each on here sometimes. It’s easy to be misunderstood. But some of the other stuff that sometimes goes on is pretty strange to say the least.

The way things are going around here lately I wonder if I will be posting much longer. There seems to be people whose sole joy is to lay in the weeds and then come out to take cheap shots, others who

I’ve been to Wrigley and old Comiskey Park. Old and smelly…just like a ball park should be, but, they had/have a certain charm. It reminds me of black and white TVs, being a kid and tail fins on cars. still, baseball is baseball. Only the characters change, but, memories never do. Best of luck and don’t break a leg in your tournament, Rodg. I’m not coming up there to slop the hogs. You gotta hang around here more. I known it’s been part of baseball for a long time now but waiver deals still struck me as somewhat an unfair proposition.

It’s weird to think ,a team went through a grueling four months of battle , can still have their dynamics change drastically by acquiring pieces from another team. i.e. Manny to ChiSox, possibly. The team should be the team (internal help aside), IMO, at this point.

I don’t like confrontations and I don’t like people taking potshots either. It needs to stop. I’m here to enjoy myself not to argue with people all the time. That’s not my bag but it definitely is other peoples. Have a good day Kate. you’re good people.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

MTU, just keep posting the pix. 99% of the people enjoy the view. The other 1% are not baseball purists. They’re trolls trying to get attention. Besides…nothing funnier than seeing pix of hairy little snake food on a chain.

    MTU,

If people like you disappear from here, the gutless punks win.

99% of the problems on here ended when registration took place.

Even folks who were against it, still post and contribute positively here.

The other 1% gets eliminated by good people continuing to post here and letting the LoHud folks track down the people doing stuff behind the scenes.

Trust me, some of these parents get wind of their actions, they won’t be posting anywhere in the near future.

That’s what has happened in the past here with a few over the top offenders.

  219. Doreen August 24th, 2010 at 3:23 pm

    MTU -

Please, please don’t let the purists drive you away.

The best part of this forum, for me, is that it is pretty eclectic. You can’t – CAN’T – dissect the Yankees 24/7, no matter how knowledgeable or dedicated you are. In fact, without being able to have the diversions that you and others provide, I wouldn’t come here.

Last night was an example of overkill. Absolute overkill. It gets mind-numbing because it’s not even about having a discussion anymore; it’s about defending your position. And twisting history. And passing judgment.

It seems to me, that the reason this forum has so many off-topic forays is because the people who were here in the beginning fell into that pattern, and it became a feature of this particular Yankee blog. I welcome new people and new ideas, but we don’t need to be forced into a situation where no one feels free to personalize this space in a positive way anymore. I would have hoped that some of them would begin to feel comfortable letting their hair down a bit. But everyone is different.

There should be room for everyone here.

But it would be nice if people could tolerate one another better or at the very least SCROLL PAST THE PEOPLE WHO ANNOY YOU.

I have always been a tease. That?s how I met my wife. When I find an easy target(you) I can?t resist.
    ************

    Its no problem.

I have always been an easy target everywhere I go. I have no idea why this is true. But its the same with my friends, family, and work (people actually joke all of the time this is true)… so the blog shouldn’t be very different

I attribute it to my personality… it must be fun to watch me react to things sometimes

    Joe-

But all I ever do is joke around and post photos of my hikes.

My baseball opinions are useless. I never say anything baseball that is worthwhile.

At least. That’s what some people think. ;)

Look what’s happened to GB. Look what happens to Betsy, or Trisha.

That’s scary stuff Joe. And it shouldn’t be allowed on the blog, or anywhere else for that matter.

I wish I knew how to stop it. But it should be stopped. of that I’m certain.

  227. blake August 24th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

    MTU,
A lot of people here like to talk about things other than baseball occasionally (me included) and that’s what makes this an interesting place IMO…hope you have a nice mini vacay.

  228. MaineYankee August 24th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

    MTU

I’ve stopped trying to discuss baseball because when I did all GB7 and randy did was tell me I didn’t know what I was talking about.

So now I just lurk  and wait to attack when they least expect it.

Not really but it is fun to do some good natured sparing.

  236. SJ44 August 24th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

This is not just talking about baseball.

There are plenty of blogs folks can go to so they can quote their stats and trash/praise the Yankees 24/7.

This place has become a COMMUNITY.

To that end, as Doreen stated, all different topics are welcome.

It’s what makes this place fun and why several of us spent a lot of time with the LoHud folks to preserve it and get it back on track.

The game threads will always be crazy because too many children can’t contain their emotions.

Overall though, the place is better than it’s ever been.

It only stays that way MTU is if good people like yourself keep contributing here.

  237. MTU August 24th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

    SJ-

You’re absolutely right in what you said. And I appreciate the sentiments. There are some real lunatics running around out there, and people who are intolerant, agressive and rude.

Registration has helped but IMO more is needed to prevent the kinds of things I mentioned above from happening, and continuing.

I thank all of the rest of you for your very kind words. You’re all very fine people. The blog is lucky to have you.

If she can still sort of walk, you might also try cable springs (or drain snake coil) under her belly, and down the legs to the feet. The spring needs to be shaped to assist the bone and musculature hold a ‘normal’ position it should be attached on either side of joints (cheap elastic and Velcro wrist wraps work), and care should be taken to avoid impinging tendons. Once shaped, the spring will allow her to move, bend etc but will always push towards its shape.
