Postgame notes: “Take it the way you want to take it”

This was the question asked of Joe Girardi after tonight’s game: I know you don’t have a lot of options, but are you still committed to (A.J. Burnett) as a starting pitcher?
This was the answer: “I’ve said we’ll evaluate after this weekend where we are and what we need to do.”
Girardi said more or less the same thing earlier this week, but those comments seemed directed at the rookie Ivan Nova and the recently demoted Javier Vazquez. They might have been directed at Phil Hughes and his innings limit, but they certainly didn’t seem to be aimed at Burnett. This time, Burnett was the question and that was the answer.
“Take it the way you want to take it,” Girardi said.
Burnett has been wildly inconsistent. He’s now gone yet another month without a win. He did it in June, and now he’s done it in August. There were some good starts mixed in there — the complete game in Kansas City, a solid three-run no-decision in Texas — but when he’s been bad, Burnett has been awful.
“It’s Groundhog Day again,” Burnett said. “It’s the same situation. You come in the first game (of the series) and take your team out of it in the first two or three innings. It weighs on these guys. It’s got to be frustrating not knowing what you’re going to get every five days.”
Here’s the Girardi postgame audio. Sorry, there’s a lot of music in the background.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
• Asked if he would be surprised to skip his next start, Burnett said: “It would surprise me, (but) he makes the decisions.”
• Asked what’s caused the bad outings, Burnett said: “I’m just not getting swings on pitches I’m used to getting swings on, and the balls I’m throwing that they’re hitting are just getting too much of the plate, I guess… Some of those curveballs, they’re good 0-2 curveballs, but what good are they when you’re 0-0.”
• In the fourth inning, the final two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch. That combined with the Burnett struggles and the 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position made for an ugly night. “We just didn’t play well,” Girardi said. “You’re going to have games when you don’t play well. We don’t have a whole lot of those, but every team goes through those. We need to bounce back tomorrow.”
• The one bright spot was an obvious one: Sergio Mitre gave the Yankees 4.2 innings with only one hit allowed. It’s the second straight game in which a Yankees long reliever has pitched longer and better than the starter.
• Mitre has a 2.45 ERA as a reliever this season.
• Nick Swisher hit his first home run since August 2 and now has nine hits in his past 28 at-bats.
• Francisco Cervelli snapped an 0-for-16 streak with a single in the fifth.
• Not sure what, if anything, could come from it, but the New York Post is reporting that Ivan Nova and Wilkin De La Rosa are being investigated for possibly giving one another B-12 shots last year. B-12 is not a banned substance.
• Tonight’s rehab pitching line on Alfredo Aceves: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. He threw 42 pitches, 22 for strikes. Donnie Collins said he just didn’t look quite right.
Associated Press photos of the Yankees bench and Derek Jeter

I didn’t listen to the post-game, but Joe sounds like he was pretty upset -and rightly so.
Um, B-12 is not banned? Then why the hell is MLB investigating? Why don’t they investigate their incompetent umps?
I’m not counting on Aceves – I don’t even think I’d put him on a post-season roster given that we’d just have to take another long man to cover for the possibility of his back going out. I wish he’d had the surgery; we’re going to go through this next year.
Mitre’s done a nice job……….
Betsy-
Apparently it’s against the rules for players to get injections from anyone but licensed doctors. I guess that the MLB is also a bit suspicious and wants to make sure it really was B-12 that they were injecting. ::yawn::
From what Girardi was saying in the post game it sounded like they will skip AJ’s next start. I don’t know if it will help but I guess at this point it can’t hurt to try. They have to get him on track for this team to have a chance.
“Take it the way you want to take it,” Girardi said.
Joe sounds frustrated. Good.
—
Asked if he would be surprised to skip his next start, Burnett said: “It would surprise me…”
You are kidding, right?
—
There was another bright spot: Pena. He played well tonight. But when Pena is your bright spot, that’s not good.
Yawn is right, lol……………. It’s not exactly what we need now, with Nova in the rotation for the time being.
Nova would have to be dumb as a stump to be injecting himself with banned substances…………….
Night!
Betsy,
You talk about Hughes sometimes like he is a late 30s pitcher at the end of the line. Or a veteran like Burnett who refuses to deviate from his fastball and curve.
He is 24 years old and like Jerkface said has been pretty adept at picking up pitches. Probably because he has such good and repeatable mechanics, works hard, and is open to improvement.
Young players of Hughes’ caliber improve over time. They develop. They get more experience and learn more and more years go by with them working with major league instructors.
Why do you think Phil Hughes is going to be stuck in some stalemate of fastball/cutter?
He is 24 years old. The rational and really pretty obvious thing is that he will continue to build on and improve his repertoire.
24 year olds with 4 fully developed pitches don’t grow on trees. Especially those with a fastball as good as Phils.
“Juke Box Hero” ?
What do they call it? Arena Rock?
Well that’s one problem right there.
Aceves should have had the surgery. He probably would have been back faster anyway.
Awful game, I’m as positive as anyone when it comes to the yankees as a team, but they really laid an egg tonight. The offense is just so hit or miss on the road this year, its bizarre. They have too many vets to hit this bad on the road. And at this rate with AJ, we may be looking at another 3 man rotation if the yanks make the playoffs. CC, andy, and hughes. Not ideal to go with a 3 man but they may have to, funny cuz when they got Javy Vazquez everyone was saying oh no 3 man rotation again in the 2010 playoffs. Ugh, yanks have to start playin better, esp on the road.
SOB. Brad Lidge just balked in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th against the Pads.
There go my fantasy stats.
See, there are always problems worse than the ones we have going on with the Yanks!
“The offense is just so hit or miss on the road this year, its bizarre”
If they are so hit or miss, why do the Yankees have the third best road record in the majors? Have you looked at the actual stats of the offense on the road to be saying that?
JackCurryYES If Nova pitches well on Sunday, sounds like AJ could be skipped in favor of Vazquez.

It’s gonna be musical chairs between AJ and Vasquez.
LGY….As we all know he lost most of 07 & 08…Then he comes back in 09 and has 2 of the best outings ( in Detroit in Texas ) of any of the starters last season , however he ends up throwing high speed darts out of the bullpen…..So his developmental curve is quite weird due to these events…….He’ll sharpen the curveball and mix in a change next season to keep hitters honest….But make no mistake, Phillip Hughes is and always has been a power pitcher…….It’ll be about less reliance on gas, alternative power lets say
Cashmoney August 28th, 2010 at 12:59 am
I agree, I wouldn’t be against him at least trying to throw the changeup. My only point is that he sure doesn’t seem capable of changing his approach when necessary.
——————————————
He has never been a ‘pitcher’ and he may never be at this point.
But age and attrition has diminish his stuff to the point where we are now. I think we need to throw out his past trends at this point and simply ask yourself this question.
can a guy with one pitch most nights (93-94) and erratic control succeed against any good hitting team from this point forward….
My conclusion is , no likely, but we will have to see.

Funny stuff…
Cash-
But even past trends point to his not being able to pitch effectively on a consistent basis. He’s an inconsistent pitcher and always has been. Maybe not this bad, but he’s never been a sure thing. I wouldn’t expect any great improvement over the duration of his contract.
Lol look up the stats urself, I already know them and I wouldn’t have made that statement if I didn’t

i am implying that from here on out, A.J. might be worse than mediocre as in his career he has mostly been. in short, he might start to really suck.
The home/road splits for the yanks offense is significant… Honestly if they make the playoffs tho that wouldn’t bother me as far as the postseason goes… The rotation is obviously the real concern right now… Man I wish they had Cliff Lee

While I agree about Lee, part of me is sort of happy we held on to Montero. In fact, I might forfeit a World Series this year in exchange for a career from Montero. We can sign Lee in the off season anyway.
on note on Javier, his numbers looks eerily similar to 2008 ChiSox season, well slightly worse in K/bb so/9 , he is also throwing 2 mph slower than 2008. The best out of that trade might be Logan at this point.
When you paid 12 million and talents for a pitcher you can even rely on making his starts in crunchy, it’s hard to claim that this has been a successful off season by Cash.
a pitcher you can’t even rely on making his starts in crunch time,
I know, and you’re right, they will sign Lee anyhow. Losing montero would have been a big blow, but it was something cash was obviously willing to do. And u couldn’t have predicted andys injury and probably not even aj and javy being THIS bad. And who knows, maybe they’ll snag the world series anyway and get to keep montero and get lee in the fall. Either way, montero and cliff lee will both be yankees next year no matter what goes down this season, so I guess that’s kinda comforting.
“I have Lidge AND Oswalt. I’m on the verge of tears”
Actually who am I to laugh? I have Brett Anderson. If it’s even possible to do so pooly, my roster today earned me all of THREE POINTS! And my opposition (Rodgr) scored 92. Ouch!
Cash-
I wouldn’t say this has been the most successful off season, but I still think he’s done wonderful things with the minor league system. On paper, I think Cashman’s moves looked pretty good, but you can’t predict injuries and on field performance. You do the best you can with the information you have.

That graphic pretty much sums it up.
I concurred with Montero IIO.
but what I am curious about is the financial impact of going deep into playoff has on YES Network and Stadium proceeds. I think it’s rather significant. That bottom line most likely has some influence in Cashman’s decision to trade Montero in the first place.

With the way Burnett and Vasquez have been pitching, I think it’s fair to give anyone who’s breathing a shot in the rotation. They have been so consistently poor recently that a replacement level player should be an improvement. The trouble is that we’re so close to the end of the season, and in the midst of a pennant race, that’s it’s tough to start experimenting with unknowns. Unfortunately, I think the Yankees are going to stick with the “proven” commodities and hope at least one of them can work it out. It’s a really bad situation to be in, but in September, you’re running out of options.

I’m sure that YES makes a fair profit should the Yankees make a run in the postseason, but remember, the games aren’t on YES, only the Pre/Post. I’m not sure that, with all the money the franchise rakes in, the prospect of a postseason run is enough for Cashman to mortgage the farm. On the other hand, stadium profits are obviously huge in the postseason, and Cash was willing to part with Montero for a 1/2 season of Lee (which shocked me), so maybe the bottom line is a major force in his decision making.
IIOIIOIIO
That’s the one thing I liked about Torre, at least the early version. When Tino, who had carried the team for parts of the 1996 season, struggled in the postseason, he benched him. Girardi needs to show the same type of courage.
btw, Unique user name.
Cash has done a good job with minor league system. The Yankee will be almost unbeatable under the current CBA , if they can develop a pipeline of cheap elite talents as well as having the ability to procure that in the open market.
We don’t play in prize leagues either. Yeah that’s a little too much stress.
Here’s a good one. I decided to sit Andres Torres because he didn’t do much last week and was looking like he was going into a little slump. In the first three games of this week he had already scored 26 points. Grrr!

Even if CC pitches great every time out, 1, maybe 2, out of 5 reliable starters still puts the Yankees in a very precarious position. Unless the offense begins to produce is a BIG way, success for the rest of this season and beyond is entirely dependent on Hughes, Vasquez, Pettitte, and Burnett. A scary prospect to be sure.
I think cash believed that with lee the yanks were a virtual lock for a title. And back to back titles he thought was worth giving up montero also considering the yanks have some other good catching prospects.

How about this: I dropped Bautista in the middle of the year after he set a torrid pace to start and began to slump. I figured that his first half was a fluke and there was no way he could keep it up. After all, his previous high in homeruns was 16 and his batting average was sitting around .230. Needless to say, I regret that decision immensely. I also dropped Mat Latos after the first few weeks of the season–I had drafted him near the end of the draft and, I’m embarrassed to say, I really didn’t know much about him. I sure know his name now.

Torre sure seemed to be willing to go with the hot hand early in his tenure. He played Hayes and Fielder when he thought they would provide the best production and, more often than not, it paid off. I think that’s what made the end of his run here so frustrating. Torre stopped tinkering with the lineup and seemed to lose that golden touch that was so integral to our run in the mid-90s. I wonder if Zimmer’s departure had anything to do with that.
-haha, thanks. I just made up a name that I figured would divulge as little as possible about myself. Let people judge me for what I have to say, nothing more.

I don’t think it takes much courage to bench AJ at this point, IMO. It seems like the easy thing to do. Im not quitting on AJ, but I feel it is in the best interest of the Yankees to give him some time off to try and adjust for the betterment of the team.
cashman saw this train wreck about a month ago. imagine 1 37 yr starter gets hurt and the walls fall in.

It must be a terrifying prospect for the rest of baseball. Not only can the Yankees outspend you for any premier free agent, they can also plug in stud prospects to high leverage positions like catcher. Homegrown talent has a way of creating a winning franchise like no amount of money can. We learned this the hard way from 2002-2008.
Jack, there’s no way u can assume lee would have pitched like this had he been traded to new york. Its no secret he wanted/wants to be a yankee. He was disappointed at being traded to texas and I don’t think his performance since is a coincidence. Not saying he won’t turn it around, but I’m confident he wouldve been lights out from day 1 had he been traded to the yanks.
I still would not have traded Montero for Lee, even if Lee were pitching great recently.
Imagine if Cashman had traded Montero for Lee and he pitched how he has since going to the Rangers (4.50 ERA). This place would be in meltdown
———–
Exactly. Whether or not he pitched well, I still think Montero for a 1/2 season of Lee was shortsighted; the kind of trade the Yankees would make in the period between 2002 and 2008.
CR-
What options do you propose for the other 2 spots in the rotation assuming both Vasquez and Burnett are ineffective? Throw in the fact that the Yankees can’t be sure what they’re going to get from Nova and Moseley AND the fact that Hughes is struggling, we don’t have enough arms to plug up the holes in this rotation. We really have to rely on these guys to straighten themselves out, otherwise we’re in serious trouble. Rock and a hard place.
alright peeps, i am off to the casinos tomorrow and will check in on the weekends in the next few months. it’s been a pleasure and go Yankees.
IIO
I was happy either way with Lee or Montero. But here’s the way it has to be looked at.
If we do not win the WS this year because of our iffy starting rotation, then not having Lee cost us. Because the key is that we more than likely would have been 2010 Champions with Lee and Sabathia and Pettitte/Hughes.
However, if having Lee next year and Montero in the following years helps us get numerous titles, then it’s a nice tradeoff.
If we win the WS this year, then all the better for us. No harm no foul.
Later cash, have made some decent money w poker as well so I hope the poker gods are kind to u. No tilt either. Gnight
IIO
We have CC. Hughes is not struggling. He had one bad game, with missed locations. Moseley is a decently effective stop-gap pitcher. And perhaps Nova could be an effective stop-gap pitcher. He’s already had one magnificent start. The last spot for now should probably go to Vazquez if and when he recovers from his dead arm. He had a nice outing the other night out of the bullpen. Really, it’s a tossup between the two. But at this point, when AJ Burnett is bad, he’s just downright awful and gives us no chance of winning. When Javy was “bad” he only gave up 4 runs in 5 2/3 innings before a stinky HR to Ryan Kalish. He has the ability to keep a team relatively in the game even when he is bad – even with a dead arm.
In essence, as SJ44 pointed out earlier, perhaps Cashman ought to rethink his stance on putting in a waiver claim on Kuroda.
IMO, I think it’s possible that Cashman using the media to his advantage by saying he’s not going to put in a claim on Kuroda, to throw everyone off his trail.

I don’t disagree that removing Burnett from the rotation might be a good idea, I’m just not sure that it’s going to solve all the problems. Like I said, someone other than CC has to step up, otherwise it’s going to be a long road.

I was on your side earlier, arguing against those who were frantic about Hughes’ performance, but I just don’t think it’s fair to rely on the 24 year old kid in his first full season to step up and be the number 2 starter. I just don’t find that realistic.
Cash, I live in houston and haven’t been 21 for very long so I’ve made nearly all my money playing online. I’ve gone to a few casions in louisiana but unfortuantely that’s it, because I like playing live much better. IIO
Oh, it’s going to be a long road. Long, long, long road. Im not sure that we are the best team this year. CC, a non 100 percent Andy at this point, an innings-limit Phil, and pray for rain. This postseason we are going to need 4 starters – not 3 like last year.
We are probably going to have to hit our way to victories, and if our offense dies as it has often this season and often in playoffs’ past, we will likely not win.
That’s why getting Lee was so important. But at the expense of Montero, who knows. Maybe we got the better end of it 5-10 years down the road.
Looking back right now, I can’t believe we won the World Series last year with CC and Andy and a “headcase” Burnett along with the HP umpires cheating us every game – most notably Joe West in Game 6 of the World Series.

honestly, I think the games are better in atlantic city than Vegas at this point. unless you looking for a uber high limit cash game which you find it in Venetian or the Bellagio.
you can making a living easily by grinding out 1-2 or 2-5 NL @ atlantic city. but either way , good luck, sounds like you know what you are doing. just build a bankroll first and stick to good money management , you will do fine.
Cash, that’s good to hear cuz I’m leaning towards new jersey/new york anyhow.. Was born in jersey and the lure of going back/ac & poker/yankees close is pretty strong. Uber high limits + the venetian, if I can ever afford them at all can prob wait lol. Appreciate the advice a lot man, grinding is exactly what I’d do, and I’ve learned my lesson with money management. Tilt and emotions r really the only things I struggle with and I’ve improved a lot there also. Look forward to hearin how ur doin on here in the future and good luck.
Chad , what’s up w the 80s rock post game clubhouse?
Swishers choice? I figured the guys would be into grunge or something ??
Burnett is 0-4 with a 7.80 ERA in 5 August starts and 3-10 with a 6.86 ERA in his past 15 starts. Whatever he did in last year’s postseason was then. Now is now. He’ll have to earn his trust to even be on a postseason roster.
Mitre threw enough innings and pitches to be considered for Burnett’s next scheduled start.
