Floyd vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 2:05 p.m. / YES Network and TBS
UMPIRES: HP Tim Tschida, 1B Bob Davidson, 2B Alfonso Marquez, 3B Tim Timmons
WEATHER: It got a little bit hot on the last day in Chicago. Should get into the 90s with about a 30 percent chance of rain in the late innings.
GOOD START: Eduardo Nunez is the first Yankee to have a four-RBI game within his first 10 games since Shelley Duncan in 2007. Only four other Yankees have done it since 1967: Duncan, Andy Phillips (2005), Hideki Matsui (2003) and Brian Dayett (1983).
MORE NUNEZ: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Nunez became the fifth player in franchise history to have his first homer and first stolen base in the same game: Willie Randolph (1976), Roy White (1966), Gil McDougald (1951) and Wally Pipp (1915).
SWISH VS. SOX: Nick Swisher seems like the right guy to fill in as the No. 3 hitter. He’s batting .409 (9-for-22) against the White Sox this season. he has homered in each of his past four games against the White Sox, and three of his past five games at U.S. Cellular Field.
CHASING 20: According to Elias, CC Sabathia is the first Yankees starter to reach 18 wins before August 28 since David Con in 1998. Cone finished that season 20-7. Sabathia is already one away from his career high of 19.
UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.: Marcus Thames is some kinda hot right now. He just took Gavin Floyd deep for a 1-0 Yankees lead in the second inning. He’s positively crushing the ball right now. Good call by Girardi to keep his bat in the lineup, even against a right-hander.
UPDATE, 2:37 p.m.: All-around impressive play up the middle for the White Sox. Double play gets them out of the second inning.
UPDATE, 3:25 p.m.: So far so good for Nova. He really looks in control through four innings, and the Yankees have given him a 2-0 lead on Thames’ home run and an RBI single by Brett Gardner. Whatever decisions Girardi has to make about his rotation, Nova seems to be making one decision easy.
UPDATE, 3:35 p.m.: The Yankees have needed Nova this afternoon, because Gavin Floyd has settled in to pitch pretty well. He’s allowed some base runners, but not many hard-hit balls and it’s still a 2-0 Yankees lead through four and a half.
UPDATE, 3:47 p.m.: The White Sox tied it on back-to-back two-out hits. We’re even at 2.
UPDATE, 4:00 p.m.: Another impressive start for Ivan Nova, who turns the game over to Boone Logan with two outs in the sixth. Nova leaves with the game tied, so he won’t get his first big league win, but he’s given the Yankees two good starts. Hard to imagine him losing his spot in the rotation just yet.
UPDATE, 4:04 p.m.: I’m just the messenger: The scorer here in Chicago ruled that a single for Pierzynski. If Pierre were running? Fine. But that wasn’t Pierre.
UPDATE, 4:13 p.m.: Bases loaded, Kerry Wood finally gets out of the sixth inning with a ground ball to first. Yankees up by one.
As you might have noticed, I got totally screwed up earlier thinking the White Sox had tied the game with that run in the fifth. Happens a lot covering a game. Sounds crazy, but you spend so much time writing during the course of a game, it’s pretty easy to get yourself mixed up. Sorry about that. It’s 2-1.
UPDATE, 4:42 p.m.: Omar Vizquel works a walk on a tough at-bat, and now Joba Chamberlain is in for Wood with two outs in the seventh. Fly ball to center field ends the inning, still 2-1.
UPDATE, 5:02 p.m.: Jenks just wiggled out of a bases-loaded eighth. Missed opportunity for the Yankees, and still a 2-1 game.
UPDATE, 5:06 p.m.: Francisco Cervelli just picked up Eduardo Nunez, throwing out pinch runner Lillibridge to erase Nunez’s error. That’s a big out in this situation.
UPDATE, 5:18 p.m.: Through the eighth inning with a one-run Yankees lead. You know who’s getting loose in the bullpen.
UPDATE, 5:24 p.m.: It would be a real shame to come all the way to Chicago and not see Ozzie get ejected. No sense arguing that call. Gardner was safe. Cervelli went pretty far out of his way on the takeout slide, but not enough to change the call.
UPDATE, 5:28 p.m.: Not a good defensive game for Nunez, so Ramiro Pena is in to play third base in the ninth.

Now that’s it’s so late in the season, ALL games are must win games.
That’s right, I said it.
The only thing I know is besides the trolls, most of the heated arguments on this blog usually centers around one blogger. Why is that?
Go, Yankees.
Laura,
These have been must-win games for a while. The Sox got off to a slow start, but they’ve kept pace with the Rays and Yankees.
O/T, listening to that girl knuckball pitcher talk about her old coach, Joe Niekro, was heartbreaking.
Betsy,
To jump into this Hughes conversation. I think the problem is that you read too much of the nonsense on that NYYfans site. I visited that site the other night to check it out and read some of the stuff in the Phil Hughes devoted thread.
Crap like they should trade Hughes for Santana NOW and the only difference between Dellin Betances and Phil Hughes right now is that Hughes has earned his stripes in the minors.
You are polluting your mind spending time on that site.
“Does mick see dead people?”
LOLOL! LMAO! That was toooo funny!
Balkin’ Bob Davidson 1st base ump. Look for some weird calls. Nova better noticably stop in the stretch w/ men on base.
“The only thing I know is besides the trolls, most of the heated arguments on this blog usually centers around one blogger. Why is that?”
SJ explained it well in the previous thread.
Betsy, I don’t wish to argue with you. My intention is to give constructive advice. You are consistently over sensative. It grows tiring reading the same whining over and over. You are entitled to your opinion. But, so is everyone else. This is a forum for discussion. Any time someone disagrees with you, you get extremely defensive and argumentative as if it’s some personal attack. My 5 year old daughter throws less frequent emotional tantrums.
Personal attacks should not be tolerated, but opinionated discussion is the point of places like this. Give your opinion and defend your opinion til your hearts content, just without the histrionics.
Please, just lighten up.
Let’s Go Yankees!
Big game! Let’s win this series! Champagne Super Nova!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“MORE NUNEZ: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Nunez became the fifth player in franchise history to have his first homer and first stolen base in the same game: Willie Randolph (1976), Roy White (1966), Gil McDougald (1951) and Wally Pipp (1915).”
Wouldn’t that be ironic if Nuñez ended up “Wally Pipping” Jeter?
“SJ explained it well in the previous thread.”
Actually, all he did was tell us what Mick told us months ago, he just confirmed it
Anyway, let’s get this game today.
Mick, not that I have to defend myself to you, but I don’t owe you a response nor do I owe it to people like you to spend all my time here. If I feel like getting lunch and taking some time away from here, that’s my business.
You keep seeing dead people, though -
Thanks for nothing, Juventus.
/shouldn’t be betting on Italian soccer’d
“According to Elias, CC Sabathia is the first Yankees starter to reach 18 wins before August 28 since David Con in 1998″
Who is David Con?
This is a give-away game.
We have already won one game in the series.
And it’s not like the Rays can win against Lackey and the R*d S*x can ever, ever, ever catch us.
“Wouldn?t that be ironic if Nuñez ended up ?Wally Pipping? Jeter?”
Sadly, that may not be so hard to do anymore.
SJ didn’t explain anything at all in the previous thread, but hey whatever floats his boat.
LGY, I’ve been posting on NYYFans for a long time. IMO, there has to be a middle ground with what that board believes and what this one does. Anyway, it really doesn’t matter, does it?
Yummy.
Well RSM, ok you said your piece……….have a nice day.
mick,
Seriously, you gotta stop calling out Betsy. She doesn’t owe you anything the way you treat her.
And, she’s free to come and go.
The whole “Betsy’s left the building thing” is old.
Mick, not that I have to defend myself to you, but I don’t owe you a response nor do I owe it to people like you to spend all my time here.
==============================
Well then, why did you respond?
You can’t help yourself.
And please don’t spend all your time here, nobody but you is forcing you to.
M, thanks!
The fact that he thinks he knows me is ridiculous………….but arguing with him is like arguing with a brick wall
83 degrees in Las Vegas right now
m
You gotta stop being betsy’s enforcer.
you are better than that.
in this case she brought my name up, not the other way around.
plus, youve called her out many times yourself, don’t be so “passive-aggressive,” as you like to say.
“According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Nunez became the fifth player in franchise history to have his first homer and first stolen base in the same game: Willie Randolph (1976), Roy White (1966), Gil McDougald (1951) and Wally Pipp (1915)”
Unless Baseball Reference has the wrong information, the Elias Sports Bureau is wrong.
Roy White had 2 SB’s in ’65
Willie Randolph stole a base with the Pirates in ’75….
Macdougad’s first stolen base came April 29th, 1951. His first home run was hit May 3rd.
The whole “Betsy’s left the building thing” is old.
———-
So is the ridiculous over-analyzing of Hughes and overvaluing of Red Sox. At least have the same standards for both.
mick,
Are you kidding? I’ve spent plenty of time getting on Betsy.
I’m not her enforcer. You’re just up to your passive-aggressive crap again. YOU’RE better than that.

It’s called being a hypocrite.
You don’t like Betsy, ignore her. Complaining about Betsy dummy’s down the board and makes me feel like there’s a bunch of thugs on here. Just skip the posts.
I disagree with a lot of what Betsy posts, ( sorry Betsy) yet I dont feel the need to respond and bully her.
BTW- Mick never had it right.
Thank you
Hi everyone, go yankees
ET,
Are you kidding? I guess you haven’t read my responses TO Betsy. With the exception of one or two occasions, I’ve tried to be respectful to her. But I call her out on her obsession with Hughes all the time.
The difference is I don’t stalk her about it.
this is a big game for Nova, because its a pressure spot. Hopefully, he pitches as well as he did in his first start. Definately a must win game.
Tar, you don’t have to apologize for disagreeing with me……..that’s what a blog is for.
CB
Zlatan went to Milan.
There’s actually an article on WSJ about the money involved in it. http://online.wsj.com/article/.....10812.html
__
Why put stick ‘em on your bat if you aint gonna swing the damn thing.
Umpire blew 3 of the 4 calls on Gardner. 2 “strikes” were outside of the zone, and the ball was on the inside edge. Not a good start for Mr. Tschida.
M, you’ve always been fair. We don’t always agree, but I honestly don’t care about that…………..you don’t attack me or invalidate my opinions because they don’t match up with your own, and I appreciate that.
Swisher owns the Sox.
lets hope the Yankees bat are still alive today. It seems as if they can’t put together to back to back really good hitting games, (at least in August)
Rob
Thanks for letting me know that Tim Cheata Tschida is behind the plate. Now I’ll be focused on that anti-NY pig all day.
Not a strike. Outside.
Ugh. Can’t stand the twinkle toes strike calls. Are you a dancer or an ump?
It’s Sunday, a day of rest, can’t we all get along and show some respect to all great Yankee fans.
Mick
You are totally obsessed with Betsy.
If you disagree with her make your point and leave it at that.
She is entitled to post without being harassed.
hopefully Tschida gives Nova those pitches way off the plate.
I’ll believe it when I see it, though.
He’s not a dancer nor an ump. He’s a member of Red Sox Nation.
Cano has to come up big today.
It seems like the Yankee batters will have to get used to a gigantic strike zone today. To lefties Floyd has gotten the outside, outside corner.
CR9: I really don’t want to be involved in your conspiracy theories about the umpires. Besides, as I pointed out, Gardner got a favorable call from Tschida as well.
And Tschida recovered after that first AB. I didn’t see any other pitches that I feel he called incorrectly. And Gameday agrees with me.
Getaway Day strikezone. Like the old days.
If Nova gets the same zone, it’s going to be a quick game so, guys better be hackin’.
Same pitch strike 1 to Cano. Not called against pierre. i hate this pierre; he helped cost us a WS in 2003.
Nice curve to get Vizquel. One more, please.
Different looking breaking stuff today from Nova
Nice curveball to the 90 year old. That is a big pitch for him if it’s on today. Against the Jays the curveball wasn’t good at all.
Nice job of Kay and Singleton to leave out the most important part of the B-12 story. That it is not banned.
IMO the way they presented that story was pretty irresponsible.
Novalicious!!!!!! So far so good.
very good first inning
That is an impressive, impressive inning.
not too shabby.
Woah. Nice economical pitching. Frankie is catching; wonder if he’ll actually be focused on catching today mistake-free.
when will they play a Sat night game in YS?
Much better first than last start. No butterflies.
day games suck

Samething I was thinking…it shouldn’t even be a story, because the substance isn’t banned so what’s the problem
Can’t ask for a better start from Nova.
AJ should take lessons on how to attack first innings.
It would go a long way toward getting himself straightened out.
Anyone have a link on the B-12 story?
Don’t they have trainers in the minors? I would’ve played it safe, and gone through the staff.
Really nice inning for Nova. Hopefully the guys can get some early runs for him. Swish and Cano need to come up big today.
LET THE GOOD THAMES ROLL. 319 avg.
Very good first inning from Nova…throwing strikes and the breaking ball looks much tighter and more down in the zone today…just one inning but a nice start.
There are stories on Nova using B-12. Where are the stories on David Ortiz and what drug he tested positive for and what he’s currently using? It’s been over a year now, and the (Boston-loving) media still hasn’t gotten any info from the Big Sluggy.
Continue to seize the opportunity Mr Nova.
You will not only keep yourself in the rotation this year but you could pitch yourself into the 2011 rotation.
Hell, you may even pitch yourself into the postseason rotation
43 posts as of this comment.
17 or so by Betsy or about Betsy.
That’s 35% and that says it all.
Me, I’d rather read about baseball. Smart opinions? Stupid opinions? Bring ‘em on and talk about them but enough of this “woe is me I’m being picked on” and “stop picking on ___”.
Thames clearly wants to play full time. LOL!
thames can be the full time dh now
The media is just trying to ruin the kid (Nova). They’re doing their best to shut one of our prospects down – before he ever really begins.
THAMES!!!!!!!!!!!
marcus thames is awesome.
hr come in bunchies
MONSTER THAMES!!!
I new something good was going to happen…with this guy at bat. THAMES baby!!!!!!!
Go Thames!!! He is on fire now. Girardi has to keep him in the lineup even against righties.
They’re all looking like Randy Johnson now.

——————-
They didn’t say it wasn’t banned, but they did point out that it’s kind of odd that the two would be given themselves injections when there are team trainers that could have been doing it. In a round about way, they were saying that there is nothing wrong with the B-12. They raised the issue that, if they were not using the trainers to do the injections, then it wasn’t really B-12.
Just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here.
Marcus Thames is just ridiculous at this point.
so i saw napoli claimed off waivers? doesnt he catch? any chance he made it to the yankees?
mlb.tv working for you guys?
Missed what Gameday tells me is a homerun in to lake Michigan
Thames has been unbelievable this weekend!
How about that. Thames is en fuego.
granderson is hitting the ball well now too. even the outs are hard.
I don’t know what else to say about Thames…talk about a guy earning his paycheck.
You make a mistake with Thames now, it leaves the park.
IMO, he to DH everyday until he cools off.
Ride the hot streak as long as you can.
Can’t take Thames out of the lineup right now.
Even when Berkman comes back he shouldn’t be guaranteed DH duty vs RH with how hot Thames is.
man, granderson is due. hitting the ball alot better these days.
Too bad Granderson’s batting average is dropping down to 0.244 once again.

Thames in a groove!!! OMG!
Whats Sterlings call after a Thames-jack?
Is Nova in “hot water” over the B-12 thing ?
SJ,
I agree..have to ride this wave until it breaks. He’s just swinging it too good right now and is causing too much damage to take him out of the lineup.
Great play
Got to give credit. That was a great play by Ramirez.
sick dp by chi, d@mm
oh well…its not much you can do about a guy making a play like that
Nunez hit it hard…tip your cap, nice play there by Alexi.
Happy thames are hear again
**** Just took away a base hit and 1st and 3rd with that play. Cant wait to see that effort against another team that they play 7 more times this year.
Too many double plays as of late. Not good.
that was an awesome doubleplay, against us but nevertheless amazing
I believe that Marcus’ last name is pronounced “Tims”. Hawk has been calling him Tames. LOL!
What a play. Nothing they could do about that. At least, Thames got us on the board. What was Hawk’s call. “You can put that one on the board.”? Or is that reserved for the “good guys”?
Floyd looks like Jeremy Bonderman’s little brother
Pat M
I saw Nova in Portland 2 years ago and his off spead stuff was his best pitches. He really had hitters off balance. His FB has improved from then. He has made quite alot of progress since then.
The Lord giveth and Ramirez taketh away.

Slick play there by Jeet.
Perfect game here we come lolol hope i didn’t jinx it
Jones’ head is bigger than ever ! Wonder why ? LOL
Breaking ball looks significantly better than his last start and he’s still sitting in the mid-90s..
Swisher is looking pretty solid at 1B…can’t remember the last time he had to play there
almost as big as Bolanco’s dome.
Polanco*
Nova is very impressive out there, he throws free and easy and the ball seems to jump out of his hand. As others have already mentioned, the breaking ball is much better than the last time.
GOSH I DESPISE THIS GUY.
Nova has a little edge to him.
I like that.
“Perfect game here we come lolol hope i didn’t jinx it”
Why would ever take the chance? Hopefully there is something there to form over substance. nonlolol
Seriously looking like Scranton v. ChiSox. Love that we have contributions from the farm.
Curveball is the big difference today for Nova. He couldn’t throw it for strikes last time out.
Guys are going to learn it’s dangerous to hang out over the plate with Nova pitching.
Nice job Faiaz. lolol

He looks good. Moves hitters off the plate. Me likes.
womp womp womp
M, what do you mean “contributions from the farm?” I thought we had no farm system!
/sarcasm.
Nova has great stuff. I’m excited about this guy.
I don’t think you can jinx a no-no through 1.2 IP.
I love this kid Nova. He doesn’t have fear of moving a batter off the plate. And he aint afraid to back it up – like when that criminal Bautista tried starting crap with him. And he’s a Cutie Patootie!
is this what the classic “free-and-easy delivery” looks like?
Rob B,
Exactly.
Why are they talking about Strasbourg and his elbow?
Like non-stop.
I like the fact that Nova is very aggressive and goes right after the hitter. Even against the Jays his curveball wasn’t that good but you didn’t see any nibbling from him.
Nova definately should get the call to pitch on Mr. AJ’s next start…we just can’t risk Burnett’s awful performances this late in the season
Nasty change right there….impressive.
AJ and Hughes need to take notes. Deadly change up.
Faiaz
You hear about Zlatan?
__
Ohhhh, what a pitch to strike out Ramirez! Holy crap!
“I don’t think you can jinx a no-no through 1.2 IP.”
Looks like he just did.
Superstitions are jinxed.
Gameday says that 5th pitch was a strike. I thought it was pretty close when I saw it, but thought it might have been just a bit low and/or inside.
Gets him swinging on the next pitch, though, so it’s all good.
Faiaz
And Barca have won their opener and Villa has notched a goal on his La Liga debut!
This guy is not intimidated.
Threw a great changeup to get Ramirez.
If he can keep that in his pocket for the second time around on these hitters, he will keep them from sitting on his fastball.
So far, so good.
hardwired7 August 29th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
is this what the classic “free-and-easy delivery” looks like?
————————
at least to me, Nova is ‘free and easy’ in his delivery because he doesn’t look like he’s throwing hard and the ball jumps out of his hand. Compare that to Chamberlain, who looks like he’s jumping out of his pants every time he throws the ball.
Nova has a nice confidence on the mound. Different type than Hughes though.
Hughes is like a rock on the mound. Just give me the ball.
Nova looks like one of those players that can’t be rattled. Just standing there calm and doing his thing. A Manny Ramirez type confidence in a way.
The TBS gun had Nova topping out at 97, though that’s probably too high.
Still, he’s striking out batters and generating nothing but ground balls.
Tell ya what, I’m someone who has great respect for baseball superstitions, as do the players and seemingly most if not all of the broadcasters, of course except for Michael Kay. But if I didn’t, I certainly wouldn’t disrespect those who do have them by using them against my own team!
Hitting is timing and pitching is upsetting that timing . ( hard stuff helps though ) LOL
“who looks like he’s jumping out of his pants every time he throws the ball.”
——————————–
His or Boone Logan’s pants?
Id rather Nova not get anywhere near a no-no or perfect game. No need to have any unnecessary pressure on him. Just let him go out there and pitch his game.
Frankie! Nice piece of opposite field hitting!
Rob,
For you to think that me commenting on a perfect game has ANY effect on Nova’s performance… well it just makes me aware of you intellect

no idea, last i read… he was supposedly being traded to play with ronaldinho…
If Nova continues to get offspeed stuff over like that then he’s going to be good..nice little sink to his fastball as well.
That should have been strike 1 to Jeter
Gardner better steal 2nd base before the dp.

Could have gotten Floyd to about 60 pitches that inning. Horrible at bats by Jeter/Swish
Jeter was determined to hit into a double play.
OMG, Smoltie won’t get off his TJ soapbox…saved by the 3rd out. Let’s see if they pick it up for the third half-inning.
d@mm bad luck
Betsy,
You mean like the result of that on the field?
I don’t know if it really makes a difference. Was just an observation. The important part is that they are both very confident on the mound even though it looks to me in their own way.
There was no reason for Gardner not to run on the 1st or 2nd pitch. AJ is dreadful behind the plate. Having guys on base with Jeter up is useless, they get erased by a dp every time.
“And, yes, a person should be respectful of those that do believe in those superstitions”
rob, that’s the point, and that’s why I am astounded by the arrogance Michael Kay shows every time he makes it a point to mention it before the end of the 5th inning AND launch into a dissertation about why he thinks it’s silly that people think he shouldn’t do it. Why not just don’t do it!
are you guys seriously mad about that DP? He hit a line drive to 2nd base. Bad luck there….
Jeter and Swish both swung 2-0. They need to be more patient than that….
Okay, after the 5th inning. 5 outs into a game does not a jinx make.
Can we drop it? Don’t want to go round and round on this. Gotta concentrate on Yankees and LLWS at the same time.
Faiaz, I was joking when I “called” you a jerk for jinxing the DP. I assumed that you knew that and were joking in your response to me. If that isn’t the case, I don’t know what to do for you.
Jeter is going to have a great homestand & a clutch Sept.
Nova reminds me a little of Mo, the way he is so free and easy.
Great news on Andy. This aint a perfect world, but Andy is perfect, in every single way!
It was a hit and run play so Jeter has to swing.
You either keep the hit and run off and let Gardner try to steal, leaving Jeter the option of taking the pitch, or just play it straight.
Didn’t think that was the situation to try the hit and run.
Somebody compared Montero to Frank….man I hope so cause he could flat out rake in his prime.
Another great breaking ball there from Nova.
LGY? I’m not sure what you mean by your first comment……… I just didn’t understand how they are confident in different ways; no big deal though.

Jeter and Swish both swung 2-0. They need to be more patient than that….
————————-
do you know what a hit and run play is? The runner goes, the batter swings at the pitch. Jeter hit a line drive at the 2nd baseman, that’s baseball. But don’t let it get in the way of you complaining about Jeter, you’ll probably be complaining on the day he is inducted into the Hall of Fame as well.
You cant fault the Yankees for 2 bad luck double plays this game. One great play by the defense, and one well hit ball right at the guy.
I don’t like hit and running with Gardner at first either…just straight steal him.
I just hope a meteor or blimp disaster doesn’t hit Chicago and ruin the game while we have the lead.
Knock on wood.
Trisha,
I have a Master’s degree in Biology and I had an academic scholarship and I’m more street-smart than book-smart. I also speak English, Bengali and Spanish. LOL so please don;t question my intellect. About “meaningfulness,” I have a Yankees tattoo http://www.facebook.com/#!/pho.....=fbx_album so I can assure you that the Yankees mean more to me that they will ever do to you. I just don’t live in a dreamworld like you do to believe in superstitions. I am a realist.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Nova and his compadre could be in serious trouble, all we need.
Nice strike 3 call by Tschida. Thanks. Fairness.
nova rules!
Tschida has a big strike zone, that’s really good for a young pitcher like Nova.
Boom goes the thermonuclear device?
Don’t wanna live with the change right there but still had pretty good movement even though it was up.
ROB B
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? “;)” is the ultimate sarcasm symbol… I put that at the end of my post so please don’t think I was trying to offend you bro I KNOW you were being sarcastic and I was also in response
“Okay, after the 5th inning. 5 outs into a game does not a jinx make.”
Since it sounds like you made up the second part of that on the fly (as opposed to quoting any “lore”) I would still say that any Yankee fan wouldn’t want to be saying it at any point, joke or not.
Yeah I’m happy to drop it and equally happy to leave the game thread altogether. I just don’t have the head today for some newbie who thinks it’s funny to flaunt a superstition and talk soccer during a baseball game. Maybe he needs to learn to worship one god at a time.
Adios.
I live in Vegas and the Big Hurt lives here as well. He comes into the Casino I work in quite often and he is a mountain of a man. The one thing that stands out for me is his Smokin’ hot wife.
nice play by Nova.,….looking extremely solid
Omar Vizquel is still playing baseball?
He must be 50 by now.
Nova is flashing front of the rotation stuff today…
Ivan Nova looks very un-Burnett like. He seems to trust his stuff.
What’s up with all the self righteousness today?
do you know what a hit and run play is? The runner goes, the batter swings at the pitch
———–
Since Gardner is so fast and AJ is a bad catcher they should of just let him steal the base. There was no reason for a hit and run. Fast guys like Crawford and Ellsbury just steal immediately they don’t sit around trying to read the pitcher and don’t have to put plays on to get the runner over. Gardner should actually take advantage of his speed.
Sources have confirmed Vizquel is actually 62 years of age.
CR9,
i think this whole thing started after the media started speculating Zlatan’s sexuality http://www.sportsgrindent.com/.....ard-pique/ Ever since then, he has not been the same in Barcelona.
Vizquel or not, that two out bunt attempt with a man on base tells you something about Nova’s stuff today.
Very impressive. Very composed out there.
Curve ball is much tighter. His change up has good movement and he throws it with the same arm speed as his fastball.
Vizquel is still good at 43. HOF’er 4 sure.
cr9
but he plays like he’s 26. RESPECT THE VIZ lol
He pitches two more innings like this and he has to stay in the rotation for now.
If that means AJ sits, so be it.
It’s about performance now with the starting staff.
After CC and Hughes, whomever performs stays in the rotation and gets another shot.
It’s the way it has to be until Andy comes back.
It’s too late in the year to wait on guys to “find it”.
Whomever does the job, keeps the job, regardless of service time.
Thames TIME ?
Thames is a beast

Bloggers will demand it. LOL
It’s all about winning at this time; the Yankees can’t afford to fool around and take time to try and fix Javy or AJ. If Nova is getting it done, start him until he doesn’t.
Faiaz
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahha! I never heard that. Are Pique and Zlatan gay? Was the tabloid right about the picture?
A hit from the bottom of the order to score Thames would be big
Of course that would mean he potentially starts in a playoff series, but…………
Ah “faiaz”. And you would know where to find my facebook account how? Looks like we have yet another imposter on our hands.
The bullcrap with people having 27 identities here will just never end will it.
Another good short swing from Grandy.
Floyd is all over the place today, the Yankees should score a bunch of runs…
I just hope we can pile it on now, ‘cos innings 5-7 will be devoted to an interview with TBS’s own Closer, Kyra Sedgwick.

gotta love us and the DP’s…that is really becoming very unproductive………………

I like it, but don’t bet your next paycheck on Girardi doing that.
Yes they have, lol………..It’s too early to really think about it, though. We have to win games, so whomever is pitching best gets the nod.
These dp’s stink!!! They seem to be hitting into a ton of them right now.
That was a bad swing by Kearns there. That was a fat pitch and he rolled over on it.
If the Yankees lose today, it will be the double plays that did them in.
Faiaz
If that profile pic is you, you are really HOT! And Im not gay
all these f…. DP will come back to haunt us…
A lot of opportunities wasted by great playes, bad luck…. etc.
3 DP’s in 4 innings. Unreal.
Watch us lose this game 3-2 or 4-3. Way too many lost chances in this game so far.
Trisha,
YOU ARE IGNORANT. “worship one God” WTF does that mean? I’m Muslim. People from Bangladesh are Muslim not Hindu. Your ignorance led you to believe that just because a country is next to India, all of the citizens must be Hindu. You need to get laid to have so get rid of all the hostility built up inside of you, ON A SUNDAY at that. Newbie? LOL.
Adios!!!
I can’t get on Kearns because he’s done so well for us……….
This is a big inning for Nova against the heart of the order the second time around.
Floyd is throwing the ball very poorly. Lot’s of mistakes up in the zone. They should be able to get to him.
this is the key inning for nova. heart of the order
Kearns is starting to slump.
Hasta luego!!!
Nova reminds me a little of Fergie Jenkins out there, if he can be half of that in his career we’ll all be pleased…
CR9
LOL yea it’s me lolol don’t worry bro, I know you’re not gay. You are just confident enough about your sexuality to acknowledge another man’s is good-looks. I respect that.
If Muslims want acceptance they should be tolerant of others n build a mosque someplace else. Putting a mosque on a military site equals victory to many Muslims.
Ace gtfo out of here with that on a yankee blog
Religion, sexual orientation, no-no jinxes, and Betsy?! I think you guys forgot politics.
This is a baseball blog.
Let’s keep it that way. No politics or religion, please.
Ace
Huh? Are you being racist? It should be the right of any religion to build their place of worship any place they choose .
TRISHA WERE YOU BORN STUPID?? I sent you a picture of my Yankees tattoo from MY facebook album in case you didn’t believe me.
Homerun from 0.214 Andruw Jones?
This conversation has gone in the gutter. Enough with this nonsense.
Maybe I’m missing the boat here, but I didn’t think Trisha’s comment about worshiping one god had anything to do with religion. Rather, I thought it had more to do with the talk about futbol on a Yankee blog while a game was going on.
alright, alright….looks like the ChiSox are picking up Nova a little better this inning…couple of hard hit balls
ACE,
I really have no words for you. It’s just disappointing to know so many people like you exist.
CB,
This kid Nova looks pretty good.
Made his first real mistakes there to Konerko and Jones but got away with them…still throwing strikes and looking pretty good.
Rob u may be right but its clear it should be dropped. The yankees are and should always be the priority on here.
Nova is giving Girardi lots to think about if he keeps putting up zeroes.
A lot to like so far.
Time to get more runs!!!!
Let’s see what happens next inning on the first pitch. If he’s smart, he’ll make an adjustment. The last couple of hitters were a little to confident.
I like what I see from Nova. He should (will) get another start. To me, it’s all about achieving calm and consistency and he can do that.
Sorry Ruby Tuesday/California, try again.
Or, AC Milan up 3-0 on Lecce in the first half.
Woo hoo!
AC Milan is like the Yankees of Milanese futbol sides, except in the ways in which they are not, which are numerous.
This is not a blog with for politics. Take that garbage somewhere else.
There are plenty of sites on the internet to say stupid things on. Go find one.
This is not a place to discuss politics. If you want to have that conversation take it somewhere else.
MG….I see the Jenkins comparison
In Honor of our Rookie pitchers 1st victory today….I will having a Bagel with Nova Lox for dinner.
They need to get Floyd’s pitch count up. He is only at 66…
sj,
a baseball question. my understanding is that the adjustments the league makes to a young pitcher, and the corresponding adjustments that a guy like nova makes will be the difference between a hot start and a sustained career. correct?
what adjustments will a guy like nova have to make? anything you’ve seen suggest to you that he’ll be able to make adjustments?
Well – The Yankees are not owned by Obama so there the comparison went south…
Great game for cervelli so far. If he plays like this more often I have no problem with him in the lineup.
Great bunt by Cervelli!
In case anything was directed at me, I was not talking poliitics, just calling out unnecessary racism.
And for the record, this is not a place for politics, but this can be a place for religion. The Yankees are my primary religion
Pepi-
Nova looks very good. Better than he even did last game. His location is better and his curve ball is much tighter.
And he’s very composed out on the mound. He has good stuff and he knows it.
He can pound the zone because he locates inside of the zone very well. That and he trusts the life on his fastball and the bite on his off speed stuff to make squaring the ball up well difficult.
Can’t say enough about how he looks.
Nice idea there Cervelli. Good job…I know he was safe but Vizquel is amazing that he can still make that play at 43…
Why drive his pitchcount up? They are getting good pitches to hit….
“Nova reminds me a little of Fergie Jenkins out there, if he can be half of that in his career we’ll all be pleased…”
Very interesting comparison. By his physical frame and stature and the way he stays tall on the mound I could see it.
Yuck.
To everyone,
I feel guilty for bringing negativity to this blog today and I’M SORRY for that but please understand when people take shots at me, I have to hold my own. Especially if they have no idea of what they are talking about. I mean how does posting a pic of my Yankees tattoo possibly make me “an impostor?” Anyway, again I’M SORRY
I’m not gonna say anything
Stupid way too erase another base runner…He finally got on base no reason to get gready.
No YOU are the one who is stupid. In your haste to get your post up you accidentlly linked to my Facebook account and once again forced me to take it off line. So if you go back to your phony post, you’ll see the link is now broken.
“I have a Yankees tattoo http://www.facebook.com/#!/pho.....=fbx_album so I can assure you that the Yankees mean more to me that they will ever do to you.”
You’re pure evil.
these mistakes are likely to bite them
You all jinxed Cervelli with your praise.
Again.
Haha, and then that. Not sure if that was a prior read or something, but I’d much rather have a hit and run or something there.
Why oh why would he try to steal?
It is not Floyd getting outs by pitching good – he is really really lucky through out this game
what is Cervelli doing there…that’s what is so frustrating about him. He tries to do too much, if he would just stay within himself and his abilites then hed be better off for it.
Here comes a double play
Faiaz don’t worry about it clearly you are not at fault
My husband has to take a business trip out to Chicago in October and I’m tempted to go out there with him, especially after hearing everyone absolutely rave before and during this road trip. I haven’t been back there since we returned to NJ 10 years ago.
That was bad baserunning by Cervellli.
maybe Cervelli was hoping Davidson would call a balk?
kd,
Correct.
Mainly, it’s pitching patterns and how he likes to work hitters.
Because of all the video out there now, picking up pitching patterns is easier than ever.
He will learn as he goes along how to make those adjustments.
Unlike say, for example Cervelli, who makes yet another bonehead play.
It seems every game he plays now, he does something stupid.
Should be 2 on, 1 out, and the catcher thinks he’s Rickey Henderson.
His act is growing VERY tiring.
Trisha
that’s funny because cr9 saw my pic STUPID, he got the link the same way.
Given that he has no power, it’s amazing how good Gardner is at getting on base.
He takes too many called strikes, but he has excellent strike zone recognition.

I’m over it
Damn. Lots of missed opportunities today. Hope nova can continue to roll out there.
I feel like I’m in an elementary school classroom with all the name calling going on.
all jeter does make outs, give him a pass on the dp though .
Mission accomplished: no GIDP for Jeter.
Jeter is never going to get himself right if he continues to swing at such bad pitches. All of these base runners left on base will most likely hurt the Yanks at the end. They always do…
“AC Milan is like the Yankees of Milanese futbol sides, except in the ways in which they are not, which are numerous.”
For a period of time in the 1990′s that was perhaps the case. Time and politics haven’t been good to Milan…
Recent, unexpected acts of charity from Spain not withstanding…
This makes what went on earlier look like a tea party………
Pat M, CB-I’m glad you guys see the similarities, it just struck me watching him throw today. CB’s comments about standing tall on the mound have a lot to do with it as well. That’s no guarantee that he’ll pan out but he is certainly showing that he has ability out there. It’s also an advantage of letting a pitcher develop in the minors without the glare of the media and the expectations of fans.
i try to stay as rational and level headed as possible when it comes to the yanks… but i no longer can back jeter up. He is flat out awful this season.
Floyd has allowed 8 baserunners. The Yankees have a lot of missed opportunities.
Gotta keep putting up zeroes because the O is too busy shooting itself in the foot so far.

Was that a cutter on 2-1??
This kid is dealing.
What a pitch. What fairness from Tschida. Thanks Tschida.
Sick. Pitch.
What an absolutely great curve ball Nova just dropped on Teahan. What a great pitch. No way a hitter can hit that when needing to protect aganst nova’s fastball.

Thanks, CB.
When I said “looks” I wasn’t talking about actually seeing him. We don’t get cable anymore so I don’t know how he looks, but what I see on GameThread looks good.
i knew you would provide me with a good word picture, and you did.
Hawk and Steve Stone are practically gushing about the way Nova is pitching. For all of their home town bias, both of them know baseball and provide some good insight, I’d rather listen to them than many of the other local broadcasters who are just boring.
The Jenkins comparisons are spot on.
Big guy, looks to be deceptively quick.
In other words, his fastball seems to have that late jump that makes it tough to square up.
You then have the curve and change going and you can get big league hitters out.
Huge break for us. Let’s get out of this inning with no damage.
This is a Yankees blog…stop acting retarded folks.
Enjoy the game, smh.
When I clicked on the link it took me to a picture of Joseph Goebbels, so it might be evil after all.
First mistake. Lucky it wasn’t gone. Get pierre.
Kind of curious now about Faiaz now. Kind of wish I had a facebook account. Would love to see what someone with a masters in biology with a tattoo looks like.
I kid, I kid.
So Nova is a potential top of the rotation starter? If he was this good, I wonder why he’s been merely touted as a mid to back end guy
he losing it, get the pen up.
damnit….
Damn. With the way the offense is hitting today that was a very big run to give up.
Ugh. Pierres a pest…
Ok now… what has to go right for Nova to pitch in the playoffs? How many good starts will it take for him to be in the conversation?
That hurt.
Two out runs aren’t good when your offense is dead again.
Gotta stop it here.
2 goddamn 2 out hits. Could have gotten out of this with no runs scored.
Faiaz
That video is HILARIOUS! Zlatan tells the reporter to come to his house and Zlatan will show the reporter he’s not gay. Then he tells the reporter to bring his sister!! LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!
They are getting much better swings now. He’s pitched a fine game so far, but he can’t have that much of a leash.
a lot of contact for the sox in the last two innings
Last two innings they have been hitting the ball harder against Nova.
“So Nova is a potential top of the rotation starter? ”
It’s way too early to say anything like that. He’s hasn’t even thrown 2 games yet.
This is what happens when the offense tries to make it’s best Plaxico Burress impression….
LGY, when I paste that link it now takes me nowhere but to Facebook.com
CB, oh yeah – I don’t mean based on performance, just on stuff and repertoire.
wtf kind of throw was that
Either way, someone in the Yankee system is doing something right. This guy can pitch -and we have more where he came from
A good throw gets him. 2 hits followed by 2 boneheaded plays by Frankie.
It’s an automatic stolen base with Cervelli behind the plate. Pierre is fast but I don’t remember the last time Cervelli made a decent throw to 2nd base.
Better throw gets him.
Another awful throw from Cervelli.
His 15 minutes have clearly expired.
Just awful.
Gardner should note at how aggressive pierre is on the bases.
if we can get out of this jam it will keep some momentum with us
nova can slot into the 5 spot next year at least. Put all the green into getting cliff lee.
Nice job to fight out of that
Good to get out of the inning.
We need runs!!!
i pulled nova take the chances with the pen.
let nova leave on a positive note.
bad run there
big time pitching right there. The guy had a difficult inning but manage to preserve the lead for us. The offense needs to give this kid some damn run support.
Nova has very good stuff.
Moeller…………… At least he is competent behind the plate. I just have this feeling that Joe loves Frankie and doesn’t look at him as a minor leaguer anymore who has to prove himself.
7 k’s already, are we seeing the next Louisiana Lightning?
Nice job by Nova. Very nice. I still go batter to batter with him in the sixth.
Big time pitching right there from Nova.
Pierre didn’t get a great jump..not the best of throws from Cervelli.
Not bad..bent, didn’t break.
Trisha,
You have to copy the entire thing. He was linking his own page:
http://www.facebook.com/photo......=fbx_album
Betsy,
It’s pretty funny how we lost Nova and came back to the Yankees. Was it Rule 5? It’s rare that Rule 5 guys are even given the chance to stick.
We must not let Betsygate or Linkgate overshadow the fine job young Nova has done for our Yankees.
the yanks are dominating and winning by 1 run. that is a problem. jeter, when can they move him down in the lineup. the #’s are BAD.
3 dp’s and a pickoff has given floyd a lot more rope then he deserves………………..
The offense needs to wake up now. The 2 runs are nice but it isn’t enough to win this game. Nova will probably start the 6th but be taken out at the 1st sign of trouble. The W.Sox are making too much contact against him the last 2 innings.
Cervelli, hit today withstanding, is just playing atrocious baseball. His game has just fallen apart.
He plays remarkably foolish, error prone baseball – especially for a catcher.
Dumb base running. Poor throwing and defense.
Hard to believe some people actually saw this guy as the yankees everyday catcher of the future.
His tools are at best back up catcher quality. And his style of play and error-prone nature is making him less than that.
get the bullpen loose but allow nova to try and get through one more inning. Then let wood, logan/robertson/ and mo close this game out.
Does Cervelli have any options left?
If u rip on cervelli, rip on cashman. He controls the roster.
Way to bounceback Nova.
One thing this kid has shown in 2 starts….
No backdown to him.
In many ways, that’s more important than stuff.
AJ Burnett has great stuff yet has melted down in less stressful situations for years. It’s why he’s never reached his potential.
This kid competes and that’s a positive.
Let’s go offense!!!

Only if Pettitte doesn’t come back. Right now, with Pettite, we’re looking at a rotation next season of:
CC
AJ
Hughes
Pettitte
(unknown)
Sign Lee, and the rotation is full. But if Pettitte doesn’t come back and they sign Lee, there is still an empty spot.

U just have way too much “common sense” and U R correct.
Chad its not tied where the heck are you lol
M,yes – I think he was lost to the Padres. I read that he never really had a chance to stick because he was so raw, so good for us. It’s too early of course to say what he’ll be; this is just his 2nd start and teams will scout him. However, he’s got all the tools it seems: terrific FB and breaking pitches.
good point rob. i still hope to see andy in 2011 but it is nice to have nova. i hope andy pettitte doesnt want his career to be over missing this time this year…
There’s no reason not to stick with Nova or to have a quick hook on him. There’s been some harder hit balls but he’s still commanding the game.
The offenses lack of production doesn’t change how Nova has pitched. Not sure the bull pen can do much better than Nova has.
I don’t see the Sox figuring Nova out. He’s made some mistakes in location but the ball isn’t getting blistered.
LOL @ Chad’s 3:47 post. If I wasnt watching the game, Id be pissed!
I forgot to add cream cheese to my Nova.
This kid looks good.
Changes speeds, doesn’t rely on the fastball.
Like his poise.
No, Cervelli doesn’t have any more options.
M
LOL, if you’re a girl I can send you the pictures on your e-mail but a guy sending pictures of himself to another guy is a little weird lol
wow, two really poor ab’s in a row. These guys are just swining for the fences right now…
Let’s say Andy retires and Lee signs, I still can’t see them going with Nova in the #5 spot. You’d have AJ, who will probably only get worse, and Nova – a rookie – pitching as #5s.
Is Chad watching a different game? He says its tied at 2.
how about Nova out of the pen for the playoffs?
another power arm late in the game is always a good thing.
Momentum is changing ; Do you feel it.
You know, it seems like only yesterday I looked at the splits and Jeter was hitting about .300 in August.
He’s down to .257.
The offense is likely MIA the rest of this game. Just can’t count on any more runs. Terrible job.
Nova and pen will have to hold them down.
this offense has tanked, what a pathetic performance
Cervelli rly doesn’t have more options? Man, there aren’t enough.
i feel a momentum change but hopefully nova can give us one more strong inning. However, i still feel like it might be 3-2 going into the next innings. : /
They do seem to stop hitting once they get a run or two on the board…….dangerous game to play, in the regular OR post-season.
This seems like another one of those score early and then nothing games. They had many chances to score another run or 2 and now are completely shut down. Swish and Cano not getting on base hasn’t helped.
Even without Tex and ARod, it’s inexcusable to have 2 runs with the way Floyd has been throwing today.
This is the biggest inning of the game right here.
I don’t believe in momentum in baseball…………but maybe the pitching for the White Sox has found it’s mojo because the Yankees kept them in the game.
i wouldn’t let nova pitched the 6th
Floyd is settling down now.
Yankees had their chance to pull away earlier, now it looks like it’s too late.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Nova this inning.
I hope they don’t go batter to batter unless you see him lose some stuff.
I’d roll the dice and trust he can put up a zero this inning.
They’ve allowed Floyd to settle in. He was throwing the ball very poorly early in the game.
He’s got his cutter working much better and that’s the pitch his game depends on.
The lineup needs to put some runs on the board
The other day someone pointed out that we need to answer our catchers’ situation this off-season before we look into crawford or lee. There is a little bit of truth to that.
m,
Are you sure about that?
Cervelli should have I think 2 more option years.
Betsy, I really don’t see how AJ could have a worse season than what he is currently having. I have to believe he will be better next year. I also believe he is capable of putting together a solid run here at the end. You only have to look at how he has pitched in his wins to see that. He has something like a 0.75 ERA in games he’s won. When he’s on, he’s practically un-hittable. I have to believe he’s still got a lot more games like that left.
1 away
Thanks, M.
Not having Arod, Tex, and Posada in there does make a difference.
He’s only given up 1 run; hard to take the kid out…………..
I don’t like Nova facing the middle of their order in this inning. Well whatever happens, happens. It’s hard to win a game when the offense goes to sleep like we have seen many times this year.
Cervelli has an option; the option to better his defense and make good decisions for the rest of the season to help the team.
Well, let’s be fair….
In the post-season, Tex, Arod and Posada are in the lineup. They aren’t in there today.
That does play into it.
Blake
it’s still pretty damn amazing that we are still competing with a rookie pitcher and with tex, arod and jorge out of the lineup.
Boy, the Yankees could drive you to drink. Same old, same old. They score a run or two and then wait till the seventh. They don’t work the pitcher, they don’t foul off, zip. The kid is pitching his heart out and nada. They’re walking into the playoffs, it’s in the bag, so why bother. Pathetic.
I would take Nova out now. I think he is getting tired.
maybe we can get a double play
Yeah 3 potential hall of famers…. Or at least multiple all-stars
Why would you call a 3-1 CB to Konerko when he missed badly with 2 others in the count?
Honestly, what is Cervelli thinking?
Unreal.
The kid will get us out of this inning with the lead.
Rob, maybe he won’t be worse, but I’m sure not counting on him to be better. If you’re going to go with AJ and Nova (if Lee is here), the Yankees had better be certain that they are going to get a consisent performance from Phil – otherwise that rotation is top-heavy.
I dont blame Nova for walking Koncrapko. Koncrapko has like 40 HRs on the year, and has clearly decided to hit against the Yankees this season.
great job nova!!!!!!!!!
Not a bad guy to walk, even with a one-run lead.
he kept Konerko from tying it up. the walk was fine there.
incredible job today.
Who’s A.J. is better ?
Why not let him try to finish 6 come on Joe damn!
well, hopefully the bullpen got their shitty outings out of their systems last night!
This is why I like Po catching Phil….. I trust him. He’s not the greatest defensive catcher, but he knows what he’s doing.
Come on Girardi.
Overmanaging here.
Think I would have stuck with him here with 2 out and a guy on 1st.
aw cmonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn noooooooooo. Obviously the lefty/lefty favors the pitcher and Logan’s been awesome… I still think Nova could’ve gotten A.J. out.
He’s right going to Logan here.
Ball is getting up in the zone more the last 4-5 hitters.
Great job by Nova today.
He’s earned another start, IMO.
Good timing by Girardi. Hopefully the bullpen can hold on or the offense can wake up again.
It would be great if the Yankees could get Napoli on waivers, but there’s no way another team wouldn’t block it.
I think this is a good move. Let him leave on a possitive. The outs have been a little loud lately.
My mancrush has officially switched from Kearns to Nova
Chad your not paying attention… it’s 2-1.. Nova can still win.
LGY, okay now I see it. After being totally burned I don’t trust much of anything. I still find it a little too shady for my liking. Someone with a supposed master’s degree in biology who speaks three languages and uses/overuses “LOL”, types in all capital letters, and says things like “woman get off my jockstrap” and “you need to get laid.”
Still not buying it, I don’t care whose facebook account it links to.
But thanks for showing me how you get there.
Nova did a good job.
Nova was terrific. After AJ fall apart the team is pressed to win the series. He gave them everything they could have hoped for.
The pitcher is the one with the ball in his hand. He dictates the game. Nova had that kind of feeling to him out on the mound.
He didn’t throw many pitches but that inning he did look like he was tiring. He lost his mechanics on his curve ball and his location wasn’t as precise.
Nice job – not sure what I expected from him today, and with the B-12 thing hanging over his head, but he was very good.
Joe clearly is trying to continue to build his confidence and then matchup in the later innings. Let’s see what happens..
WTF…..
Another defensive miscue at the worst time. Isn’t this kind of what happened on Friday? Sloppy play?
unbelieveable.
everyone tanked, but nova.
playing pathetic baseball over a month in a pennant race
what is going on? why does chad keep saying the game is tied? i’m watching the game on mlb.tv from outside the US but it’s still 2-1 yanks in the bottom of the 6th.. am i missing something here?
its a catcher running why did Nunez rush the throw….that should be an E5 not a hit
mo might need to come in for a long save today
yea I don’t have a problem going with Logan here with this matchup but would have loved to get Nova through this inning and go batter to batter in the 7th.
Nunez is a little Sketchy throwing the ball over there at third..he just doesn’t have much experience there and its a totally different angle than SS.
I dont believe it. What a joke. He had all day to get him, and we’re lucky it didnt get away from Swish and roll around foul territory.
We don’t have the A team at 1st and 3rd.
When will Sterling learn to say “Noon yez ?” Suzyn says it right.
That has got to be an out.
Bad job by Nunez on that play.
Now up to Wood to try and get the third out.
Not a good throw by Nunez. Better throw gets him.
The Wh*t* S*x should just hit a homerun here and end our misery.
Nunez is an awful def player.
Error all the way
AJ definitely shouldof been out. One thing we have seen with Nunez his arm isn’t accurate. He has a good arm but he needs to get better with his throws if he wants to be on this team next year.
What is Chad talking about?
Betsy–why in the world do you think that you know anything about baseball? Your opinion is meaningless. Go to a Tupperware Party.
If Nova keeps getting better and Javy/AJ keep crapping out you bet your sweet bagel and Nova lox he gets a start in the playoffs.
Ok, now the miscues are piling up.
Cerveli should have blocked that
What a disaster of an inning…
Good job Frankie getting your body in front of it. Instead, just lazy defense throwing his glove down. And a hit may turn this from a lead into a deficit. Good going Frankie.
OMG. It’s Kerry Wood? I swore that it was Robertson who ran out from the pen.
Yuck.
Come on, guys.
Happy with Nova’s work today no matter the outcome.
But the rest of the team needs to pull it together now.
I’d hate for them to lose this game for a number of reasons, but mainly because Nova put in such a great effort today.
this has all the makings of a game the pen will blow.
Oy vey……..we’re using our pen VERY early today and Wood is struggling now
Y did he pull Nova??
SJ….Nova has to stay in the rotation, pass on Burnett’s next turn…..As you pointed out, its all about wins from now on out…..It was time to pull him, he was visiting the upper zone to ofter
You have to have faith in your pen…………..but is Logan just a LOOGY at this point? I didn’t think so……..
I fell asleep before the game started and just woke up a little bit ago. What happened with Tex?
I am surprised he didn’t leave Logan in with a lefty on deck.
Cervelli tries to backhand the ball instead of shifting his body and kills the team again. You have to block that ball.
At this point, he’s a complete liability out there.
There isn’t any part of his game that is major league level right now.
Betsy–you’re struggling with Baseball Comprehension 101. go to a jewelry party
Cervelli has to move a bit there…can’t reach for those with guys on base.
Alexi is a clown.
cervelli couldn’t possibly be doing any worse behind the plate today. i miss jose molina.
ooops, trouble
Even if Wood gets out of this, boy we’re using our pen very early………….
Captain Clutch—I’m surprised that he didn’t stay with Logan when there is a lefty vendor selling ice cream behind homeplate.
cervelli should not be out there anymore in a pennant race.
Bullpen stinks. Defense stinks. Joe G. stinks.
Wood needs to throw strikes.
Cervellis defense leaves a lot to be desired
An awful team performance so far with the exception of Nova, Thames and Gardner.
How was that not a strike?
Good 1st. pitch
Just too many mental mistakes this inning.
Days like this is when you miss Arod and Posada in the lineup.
Strike 2.
I’m fine with him taking Nova out but I think he should have left Logan in after the error,…..his over managing his annoying
Tschida let Guillen get to him.
That was a strike..
Strike one, strike two…
Nope, looks like the umpire is listening to Guillen’s whining from the bench
worst pitch of the 3 was called a strike?
Wood is pretty much an all or nothing pitcher. Not a lot of ground balls coming from him.
listening to these white sox announcers makes me wanna stab myself in the ear.. and i thought michael kay was bad
way to get out of it wood!
KW!
Great job by Kerry – guy has some guts
Neither of those pitches were strikes. Both were inside, but we could have received a borderline call in our favor.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!! SWISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job Woody
Good ( enough) Wood
thank god
whew…got lucky to get out of that. Maybe, just maybe the damn Yankees can get some hits
Season saved!
profound statement by lower case m–Wood needs to throw strikes. Baseball acumen to the highest power. Good work.
gotta give it to wood. he showed some stones there, tough spot and squeeze out of 2 strikes in that AB
whew, that was a bad inning.
The umps don’t want to deal with Ozzie’s mouth so he get’s more calls than he should. He is annoying but knows how to work the umps.
Huge. Wood has been money.
Logan should have stayed in……….don’t get that.
Wood is too scary for my tastes. It usually works out, but like Lidge, he makes it too exciting.
Anyone know what Wood’s era is since joing the yankees?
Great job by Wood.
He’s been great since he’s been here.
Stayed composed, got the cutter in on Teahan, and got the out.
Still THREE more innings for the bullpen to implode …
An on cue he gets a grounder. lol

LOL seriously? I didn’t know the season hangs in the balance in a series with the White Sox.
Great job by Wood despite being squeezed and Cervelli back there….he reaches for a ball instead of moving his body but then won’t be still the rest of the time…
Benny
I think it’s 0.00
Wood has been great; what a pickup.
Trisha
I am 27 so phrases like “you need to get laid” or “hop-off my jock” are pretty normal for someone my age and this is a blog so I don’t type as in I am writing my thesis. Call Iona college and check with them if in the year 2007 “FAIAZ SHARIFF” got his Master’s there. My first language is Bengali, everyone knows English and I learned Spanish because most of the clients I deal with are Hispanic. People like you never “buy” into things from people that make people like you look insignificant. My parents taught me to respect elders, especially women but you make that extremely difficult.
Wood was definitely squeezed and I never say that………
It’s time for us to put some more runs on the board?
Pitch one to Teahen should have been a strike. Pitch two was a ball. The other two pitches were in the zone.
Can’t be intimidated by loudmouth ozzie guillen. He has a false sense of entitlement. He doesn’t affect ur job, ump.
Runs please.
Chad, are you even watching the Yankees game? Are you sober? Do you have your sight? Are you just auditioning for a position as fiction writer? Are you clueless?
Wood is better against righties than Wood.
Girardi made the right call.
I’d rather have Wood out there anyway. The guy knows what he is doing.
Ruby Tuesday August 29th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
Still THREE more innings for the bullpen to implode …
the yankees get to bat too dumbo.
You have a rookie that’s playing out of position at 3rd base, makes his first mistake and a couple of idiots decide to trash him about defense. It’s not like the other infielders haven’t made their share. He’s hitting and driving in runs and except for that play, has been solid on defense.
Season saved!
LOL seriously? I didn’t know the season hangs in the balance in a series with the White Sox.
=======================
You haven’t been reading this blog then Nick.
WHOO
Benny Blanco
0.77 ERA entering today for Wood with NYY.
Can’t LoHud afford to hire a blogger who actually knows when runs score?
Cervelli has to get his act together, especially if he remains the # 2 receiver which I can’t see happening down the stretch………Kerry Wood is going to be a big late inning factor come October……Power arms in October, part of the formula for success
Personally I would have stuck with Nova but I can’t second guess Girardi, I’m sure he saw something in Nova’s stuff that indicated he was tiring.
Wood’s ERA is 0.77 with the Yankees. Has given up 1 run.
yanks have warning track power.
every ball is to the track.
LOL! Everyone thinks Wood got squeezed, and of course, it differs with my POV. This is one of very few times that I wont complain. Both pitches were inside. Look on Gameday or Brooksbaseball (I havent looked) to confirm it.
I love how all the Yankees swing at the first pitch….its just amazing. What ever happen to the Yankees being the most patient team in baseball
SAS
GRAMMMMMMMMMMMMM how are you? I missed you
I’m fine with Wood, SJ – I love the guy; I’m just wary of using too many relievers too early. Hopefully Kerry can have a clean next inning
Betsy–would you pickup Wood? He wouldn’t even puke on you.
The first pitch to Teahen was clearly a strike………..
You can listen to the Yankees announcers if you are watching on MLB.TV

Not on here on MLB, but listening to Sterling and Waldman with sound off on TBS
LGY–thanks for giving us all this valuable information on your blackberry. You are an invaluable source of information. What’s going on in Japanese Baseball today?
Steal
I’m more ticked off at Cervelli’s mistakes than Nunez because Cervelli’s mistakes never end.
In fact, they are piling up with two more today.
Nunez is helping this team. Cervelli?
Not so much.

its a different package, a little bit more expensive, i just got the basic one. but these chicago announcers literally root for their team in the booth the entire time. they call they’re players “the good guys” say things like “come on alexi, pick him up, get a hit” or “dont swing boys, he cant throw strikes” or my personal favorite the other night “HELL YEAH” when they homered.. its really pathetic
Misogyny is not welcome here, take a hike.
I’m sure they guy was hurt until they gave him a free baseball
the***
Agreed, SJ. Cervelli has spent too much time up here for him to continue making boneheaded and lazy plays defensively – especially when he is on this team for his defense.
Nunez just made a bad throw. Crap happens, and he’s already helped us win a couple games with his bat.
This would be a good time for Cervelli to contribute with the bat.
There was no error on the Nunez play.
Let’s not discredit the huge help Cervelli was earlier in the year. With his timely RISP and 2 out hitting.
# SJ44 August 29th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Cervelli tries to backhand the ball instead of shifting his body and kills the team again. You have to block that ball.

————————————————-
I see it, you see it, a lot of people see it, but the one who should see it, Girardi, doesn’t.
I’m clueless Niblick.
Actually, I was busy writing the Pettitte story and got myself crossed up. While the game’s going on, I’m always writing about a lot more than the game itself, and I can get things flipped around in my head. I know it looks bad, and I’m sorry to have caused a stir, but it happens. That’s my bad.
Cervelli is playing for his job.
3 for 3, all the Cervelli haters are lookin real stupid. Nothing minor leagues about 3 for 3!!
this could be the game right here. If we can make it 3-1 then we will have a great chance of winning this game. We have got to find a way to score right here though.
Another big chance for a run…Hopefully Gardner can come up with a hit.
# mick August 29th, 2010 at 4:21 pm
There was no error on the Nunez play.
————–
Yes, there was. The official scorer made the wrong call.
The throw and angle from third is a lot different than from SS…I used to hate playing third and always had trouble throwing from there. Nunez doesn’t have much experience there and Arod is out…trying to get the better bat in the lineup and bed done fine so far.
Faiaz…..No one gives a rat’s ass about most of the crap you’re subjecting us too…..Give it a rest
Of course Girardi sees it. Is Girardi stupid or blind? No. We just don’t have any options right now and perhaps when September 1 rolls around, Moeller will see some action if Moeller is still in our system.
Girardi sees it, but what are his options?
And no, I don’t think the man with the short arms made it to us. At the very least, Boston would’ve blocked it.
Sale vs. Gardner. Tough matchup for Gardner.
Sale was the White Sox first round pick this year.
Throws 95-97, funky delivery, rough on lefties.
Gardner really has to hang in with this guy and that’s tough to do.
I LOVE and respect women, trust me I’m not misogynistic. I am just disappointed that I let my parents down by not being able to respect Trisha’s ignorance.
just wanted to be the 600th post.
Cervelli makes a lot of mistakes but don’t forget he’s really young and still doesn’t have a ton of experience. I think he has the talent to make an impact of sorts. He just needs to cut down on the mistakes and rely on fundamentals more.
Only LH option available. Where’s Thornton?
Nunez is hitless today bit that walk was MLB quality.
Girardi may put Thames in the outfield too. LOL
+==============================================================+
3 for 3, all the Cervelli haters are lookin real stupid. Nothing minor leagues about 3 for 3!!
It surely looks like Nova is a keeper. Nice to have a young pitcher to add at the end of the season. I look forward to seeing more of him.
WHat a joke
Thanks CR9! I thought it was 0.00.
When I was born I weighed more than this guy
How does a rookie get an expanded zone against Gardner???
Pat,
I just respond to Trisha’s comments. I am not writing it for you to read. It is a response to Trisha. I already said I am over it but she insists on continuing so what else am I supposed to do?
Benny
I was wrong. Others posted Wood’s actual ERA. He’s given up 1 run – 1 run more than I remember.
this ump is definately inconsistent…..the guys throw the same pitch twice once a ball once a strike both times it was a ball
Jeez. Does anyone feed this kid?
boy I hate the White Sox broadcasters…..
3-3 and still hitting under .200 since June 1.
Add in his dumb baserunning, horrible throw to second, and his lazy work behind the plate, and it’s been an average day for him.
Given the way he’s played, it’s a small upgrade and still below average for a ML catcher.
yet another blown chance…..
White Sox announcers are some kind of awful, the worst kind!
Just need to squeeze out 3 more from the bullpen.
haha and the white sox announcers were going crazy saying how that first slider was “definitely a strike, the ump just missed it and gardner shoulda grabbed some bench” god, i hate this tools
Strike 2 to Gardner was way outside. And Michael dirtbag Kay with a ridiculously stupid line…
“that was not Sale, that was full retail”
Does he think he’s funny???
Well that stinks..This game seems to be slowly slipping away.
Hopefully Joe will stick with Kerry………..not sure if Robertson will come right back.
@sphinxa
YESS finally someone knows my misery this series! they are the worst announcers i’ve ever had to listen to
This youngster Sale looks like he’s going to be nasty on left handed hitters if he stays healthy. That almost 3/4 arm delivery from a tall, gangly side armer is too much Randy Johnson to be fun.
berkman, tex, arod drive pitch counts up so much. We really miss those guys.
broadcasters for WS: always using “us and them”, the good guys coming to the plate, the complaints about balls and strikes going only one way, the complete loss of objectivity; UGH!
How is the game slipping away????? We’re in the lead. 6 more outs til Mo.
“what else am I supposed to do?”
—————————-
Try dropping it that usually works.
GB,
Sales did a good job. There isn’t much of him though……lol
Sale has good stuff you can’t expect the Yankees to hit everything.
I guess the yankees really don’t want to rush montero and they consider moeller and cervelli a wash. And they want cervelli to get the experience. Not saying I totally agree, but I understand.
Can’t fault Gardner much in that AB…tough matchup.
Every year I classify them as the absolute worst and they surprise me by getting even worse the next year
I meant……..no Joba, much rather see Wood
Like I said, that’s a rough matchup for a lefty.
Funky arm angle and he throws pure gas.
He may end up in the White Sox rotation next year.
He can throw.
if needed, mo should be brought in for a long save. It is very important for us to get a road series victory and finish the road trip 3-3 and in first place.
This ump is unreal…..That is a perfect strike.
97 down the middle…for a ball
GB….What do you think of MG’s Nova / Jenkins comparison ????
right there, this ump dreadful
Right down the pipe. Unreal, that one.
wow how was that not strike 3…..you have got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moeller has to be a lot better defensively than Cervelli; when he was up for a few days this year, he was fine., All he has to be able to do is catch and throw – that’s it.
@faiziz. Go away
Not a banner day for Tschida.
This ump is bad. How many times is he going to screw Wood with non- strike calls.
We were talking yesterday, with randy and Pat M, about players wanting to compete with the season at stake. I get the impression Kerry Wood is that kind of player. From what I see on TV, there’s no quit in this guy.
Cervelli did it again! Jumped up on the 0-2 pitch and cost Wood the K.
Just stay there and hold it!! Jeez, stop making the same mistake over and over.
Cervelli is just unbelievable. What the heck is he doing back there? Does he seriously think that coming up out of his crouch assuming a strike out like that during a nationally televised game is going to help Wood get strikes called?
Does he not understand that he’s showing the umpire ump? And doing so on national TV which is what the umps hate the most?
You can’t bring in Mariano for anything more than a 4 out save – if even 4 outs.
Cervelli stinks. Please don’t defend his play. 10 E’s on the year, bad average, no power, can’t throw, and makes tons of mental mistakes. Like showing up an umpire in a 1 run game.
Does he not understand that he’s showing the umpire ump? And doing so on national TV which is what the umps hate the most?
–
Maybe the umpire should be calling strikes right down the middle?
Pepitone
Fine, you’re right. But you would also be annoyed if people questioned things about you, things that you worked hard for your whole life
Does Tim Tschida know that Cervelli is 3 for 3 today?
Cervelli has cost the Yankee pitchers a lot of strikes today…no doubt about it. He just moves around way too much.
Faiaz, I didn’t make that Misogyny to you.
Sorry.
I mean, things don’t go your way, don’t get some calls in a tough spot, he just moves along and bears down to get the job done. Something that not only young players, but all of us can learn from.
It was a strike if you stay in there and hold it.
Jumping up not only cost you the K, it shows up the HP umpire and that’s just dumb.
I sure hope Jesus Montero can catch some next year.
If he can’t, they are going to need to bring a veteran backup catcher in here next year.
Perhaps the umpires shouldnt have egos and just go about their jobs instead of needing to be noticed and glorified?
Joe, I think so too. I wonder if he thinks “what do I have to lose?” – after all, he thought his career was over. After what he’s been through, pitching in pennant race is almost no big deal; after all, he’s still able to pitch.
He seems to be a great guy who enjoys being involved in big games.
When Cervell comes to the plate, I always think, “Today’s the day Cervelli hits one out.”
Maybe I’m jinxing him?
I hope Robertson does well today.
Wood 7th, Joba 8th & Sandman in the 9th. Recipe for a win.
“Season saved!
LOL seriously? I didn’t know the season hangs in the balance in a series with the White Sox.”
All I said of the above was “season saved”, Frozen Rope is the author of the LOL and beyond.
There’s no excuse for an umpire not to do his job. Showing them up? They play much lesser roles in MLB than the players do. Honestly, they should know their place. Most of them could easily be replaced I would bet. I don’t understand why they get away with anything.
Pat M. August 29th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
GB….What do you think of MG’s Nova / Jenkins comparison ????
———————————————————————————————————————-
Pat, I like it and I agree. somebody else that he looks a bit like, especially if he would throw that change-up more, my count had his at 3, would be Mario Soto but similar delivery. Good fastball and curve, though, I’m somewhat sceptical of the 97 MPH…more like 94-96 tops.
Tom
no worries
Is this a nationally televised game? It’s on YES in NY
The Yankees have a flight from Chicago to Newark after the game. Tomorrow’s opponent (Oakland) has a cross country flight.
How do you show up an umpire that has no ego and does his job professionally?
Answer: You don’t!
Joba in the 8th? Why?
the constant barking by Don Cooper and Ozzie Guillen has totally rattled Tschida. that’s sad considering he’s been an a major league ump since ’86.
Do we really want to see Joba in a close game like this ? I’m not sure.
Jack
you would rather have joba on the 8th than robertson?
Ouch, Kerry………..not good. Oh come on, Joe
There’s no reason not to leave Wood in.
“Maybe the umpire should be calling strikes right down the middle?”
If he stayed down in his crouch maybe he would have?
Look no one is defending the umpires incompetence but it’s just plain baseball stupid to do what Cervelli did. And he does it frequently. And doesn’t seem to be learning.
That’s just baseball nieve. He’s just hurting his pitcher.
So sure the umpire stinks but unfortunately that’s part of the game. And until he calls that third strike the batter is no out so it’s dumb to assume that he will be – especially on a day where the zone is so inconsistent.
The way Cervelli catches hurts his pitcher getting calls at times. May not be the way things should be but that’s just the way the world works.
And Cervelli isn’t trying to make some statement about the quality of umpiring. He’s just being annoying.
UGH!!! are you kidding me…I hate Joe G’s stupid mixing and matching. Really you think Joba can get this last out better then Wood can.
you cant walk a guy there… come on
Dont walk a senior like Vizquel in front of Rios/Konerko
don’t wanna walk him to get to Rios there…hope Joba has it today.
Still a pretty good job by Wood.
43 years old and Omar puts on a great AB.
Joba time. Hold onto your seats.
IIRC, Rios may have good numbers against Joba.
How do u walk vizquel?
Joba Chevy player of the game
If Tschida cares to look at the DVD of his “fine” work from today, he’ll see that he’s the one that looks foolish behind the plate.
Cervelli will be lucky to make the team next year with Montero not much worse defensively and a HUGE offensive threat and Romine making his was to AAA, maybe half a season away from being called up when there’s an injury to Posada.
That walk simply can’t happen. You can’t walk a guy who has no power in front of the No. 3 hitter.
Bad job by Wood there.
“Is this a nationally televised game? It’s on YES in NY”
TBS nationally
homerun coming?
you can’t walk him with a 1 run lead
It was not good of Wood to walk Vizquel, but I trust him over Joba
Come on Joba!
Hard to blame the umpire when the catcher keeps screening him out of the calls.
Joba. With a runner on.
I do not know that any good will come of this.
It’s the 7th inning not the 8th inning.
William Buckner, thanks!
Joe wants this one bad. He’s putting himself out there for some second guessing but I like it.
oo nice pitch jobber
Joba better come through this time. I don’t trust him in close games.
Throw 4 straight sliders off the plate, he’ll swing and miss 1.
the game for us out of towners is on cable MLB Extra Innings package.
Yeppers. Good Joba.
Good job Joba !
Whew………
If he stayed down in his crouch maybe he would have?
–
I’ve seen umpires call pitches that drop in the dirt, or the catcher loses a handle of immediately, both situations giving him less time to look than Cervelli catching, waiting a second, then getting up.
I know its en vogue to diss cervelli, and he certainly deserves it considering his show boating is no longer consistent with his abilities in game, but its silly to suggest anything other than the umpire should have called that a strike regardless of what cervelli did.
Whew. Lucky thing Rios got under that one.
Joba attacks = Joba succes
Not a good 0-2 pitch but he got away with it because it was 99 MpH…velocity does matter in some cases.
sorry for doubting you jobba. I say if robertson struggles then bring in mo for a 4 our 5 out save. Its not like he has been taxed by any stretch of the imagination.
Nice job by Joba. That first slider he threw was a very good pitch. I just wish we’d gotten that all season.
Good Joba showed up.
Now we need good Robertson and good Mo to show up and get 6 more outs and put two zeroes on the board.
It says here on Game Tracker Rios flied out to deep center …
was that a nice way of saying, ” That ball was almost out of here!”??

If that comment was for me. I know it’s the 7th inning, I was responding to…
# jackamir August 29th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Wood 7th, Joba 8th & Sandman in the 9th. Recipe for a win.
Very hittable pitch, as is typical with Joba, but at least no damage donw.
http://sports.yahoo.com/top/ne.....isgp-crash
Poor kid.
Through 7—- All is well. Consider all the heavy lumber that is missing, I’m pretty, pretty happy.
cmon insurance run
A run or 3 would be nice right here.
Betsy – you might be right about Wood. There’s something liberating about coming back like that.
jackamir – darn right Joe wants this one. He knows what’s at stake. And it also makes a statement to the team in no mistakable terms.

Nah…he wasn’t within 15 feet of the warning track in right center.
big hit for cano coming this inning
Does anyone else have Game Day open? Chris Sale’s picture is made of win.
Madrid are already about to drop points in La Liga in their first match.
JETER DID NOT GO!!!!!!! BULL S
Wow if jeter is going to kill the yankees at bat and in the field he can’t show up the umpire like that.
can’t wait to get out of Chi-town…these umpires hate us…unbelievable
bit time ab for jeter
Whoa that was almost as good of an acting job by the cap as “the other guys.”
I think every yankee should show up every umpire at every opportunity. No quarter given!
Nice AB jete
Balkin’ Bob isn’t so good on check swings. stick to calling balks.
Faiaz,
It wasn’t directed toward you. Some folks wondered why Joba was in the game in the 8th inning.
Jeter didn’t come close to swinging at that pitch.
Bob Davidson, predictably, with his head up his #%# again.
leadoff walk=run… most of the time
“but its silly to suggest anything other than the umpire should have called that a strike regardless of what cervelli did.”
Computers are not calling games yet. So if you think it’s silly then you’re not understanding human nature and how petty people can be.
All industries have informal rules. That’s part of the culture of that industry.
If someone doesn’t understand those rules they are going to have problems.
That’s all there is to it. So unless Cervelli is going to lead the charge on umpiring reform he needs to change this silliness.
There was no showing up. It was ball 4, he didnt go around. IT was a walk. He walked to 1st base, as he was entitled to do.
He should have continued walking to 1st base and told the 1B umpire to shove it up his ….
Have to make this guy find the zone.
Come on Swish!!!
When Francisco Cervelli puts together Drrek Jeter’s career, then he can act like he has done something at this level.
You are living up to your SN defending Cervelli’s act.
a man on second no outs we better this damn insurance run
If this score holds up, we would have scored 2 runs or less in 4 of 6 games on this trip. Can’t ask the starters/pen to stand on their head and be perfect. They blew so many opps today – hope Robertson/MO can take us home, but they have to do a better job of adding on.

I hope he does lead the charge. Someone has to. There shouldn’t be some kind of informal give and take to get the rules called correctly.
This is sport.
Tack on run would be very nice here…
Swung at ball 4
Way to go trying to do to much Swish
great job moving the runner over Swish
Bad job by Swish. He swung at 2 balls and ball 4.
damn, swish just couldn’t lay off. Man in scoring position for cano though.

Chevy “Nova” player of the game so far . LOL

lol, Obviously Jeter would never say something cross because he carries himself with class.
Swish swung at ball 4. Unnecessary.
sick hit by Cano
That’s a beautiful thing.
lucky bastard Robbie, but HEY i will take it
power from cano!
Jeter didn’t go to 3rd?
Base hit on a check swing? That’s smooth.
Wouldn’t you know it? After last night’s slugest, a classic pitching duel today.
Thames vs. Jenks.
LET THE GOOD THAMES ROLL.
Cano didn’t make an out against a lefty specialist…therefore good job Robbie.
jeter could not have made it to thrird. omar was watching him the entire time and only came in for the ball bc he checked jeter back to second.
SJ44
Quick question, since you seem very knowledgeable about the game… on days when people say “he just doesn’t have anything today” about a pitcher, what does that really mean? Mechanically? If so why is it so hard for a pitcher to make that adjustment during the game after Eiland points out the problem.
Jeter, why you no go to 3rd?
OK, Yanks, let’s put another one on the board.
He throws that again then Thames may lose it.
Jenks needs to donate some lbs to Sale.
The Red Sox claimed Napoli……….
Is the gun juiced? Everyone in this series is throwing hard.
sigh…..NO one wants to step up in a big spot
come on.. we have got to cash in on this
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
LOL did that just happen?
wow, two huge breaks this inning. We have got to take advantage of this.
Year of the Slam will continue
Can Tex pinch hit`?
got a gift there…need to make them pay.
They need another hit here. Can’t waste this inning and another gift.
Bad at bat by Granderson and very lucky.
OKAY so can the Yankees capitalize off of a gift………………..???????????
Here’s a chance for Kearns to be a “true Yankee”!
NM
of course not…swinging at the first pitch as usual
I dont believe it. If that gets past Omar, it’s a base hit. And Grandy was barely, just barely out at 2nd. Bad luck.
Another stupid missed opportunity….
Not this time…………
Not exactly grinding out an at bat there.
we deserve to lose. How can a team simply not cash in on so many breaks? that was just a pathetic ab for keanrs.
First pitch hacking. Awful. Just awful.
Looks like Konerko had his foot on the bag, another blown call in a big moment that could have allowed the Yankees to add some runs and change the feel of the game.
Kearns has already had some big hits………….too bad he couldn’t get another.
No reason to be first ball hitting in that situation and once again the road offense can’t get it done.
Going to have to find a way to win this one 2-1.
here’s the Chicago announcers call of that groundout (just so you guys can enjoy what i get to hear): Omar??? YESSS YESSS! and they’re out of it
really informative baseball analysis from 2 terrific broadcasters
Kearns swinging a 50lb bat…
“Here’s a chance for Kearns to be a “true Yankee”!”
—————————————-
I guess he’ll pass.
2 for 9 with RISP, and 1 of those hits was the squibber by Cano that didn’t advance a runner it was so softly hit.
Depleted offense is not a good excuse today, they have had tons of chances and have not capitalized.
Going to have to hope that once again, the pitching picks up the hitting.
Golden chance there wasted
I get the feeling that the Wh*t* S*x will definitely score this inning.
Do you?
So much panic while we are winning, I can’t even imagine what the comments would look like if we were losing.
Take a damn pitch. Kearns has been absolutely dreadful recently. Gardner and Granderson should get more playing time over him. He was hot for awhile and now is ice cold.
Kearns has already provided quite a bit of positive in his short time with the Yankees. A very nice late 90s like pickup.
Robertson must not be available today. Joba still in there.
Make Jenks throw pitches and he’s implosion prone….not real good approach there from the Yanks.
OH BOY
faiaz-
its not panic… its the reality of this team falling to cash in on big breaks. Its hard enough to win on the road… and when you fail capitalize on other teams mistakes it makes it near impossible to win
Cannot accept those errors…
Nunez let that ball play him.
Another huge misplay by the Yankees defensively. Better hope that doesn’t come back to burn them.
That was about as perfect a hop as he was going to get, has to make that play.
I dont believe it. Unbelievable. Just absolutely unbelievable. You had all day with the 50 year old man running.
please shoot me now…the Yankees just cant get out of there own way….
Another dreadful play by Nunez. He has to be replaced by Pena late in the game. Konerko is so slow that is an easy play. Hopefully that didn’t close them the game.
Pena should have been in the game for defense in this inning.
That’s a miss by Girardi, IMO.
That’s likely the ballgame. Nunez has never been a good defender. Pena should have been in there.
Great throw. Big play by Cervelli
Got him
big time out right there
lol. Ruby is definitely ER. “Wh*t* S*x”
Nice job by Cervelli.
Nice throw Cisco
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FRANKIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! PERFECT THROW BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cisco must be reading this blog! great throw.
Now that’s a very good throw. Nice job
Thank god Cervelli chose that moment to make his first good throw in weeks, or the game could have really turned there.
cervelli did one good thing this game. that throw was sick
whew….this is the best thing Cervelli has done all day!!! that was a big time play
That time Cervelli made a throw like a ML catcher.
Great throw.
Huge out. Very nice throw by Cervelli. He’s had a tough game back there but that was a throw and release that was more reminiscent of last season.
Thank God Cervelli made the throw.
Thank you Cervelli. he finally makes a good throw in a very big spot.
Joba is throwing HARD. Really, really hard.
Well, we knew Nunez made a lot of errors in minors, so not a surprise.
SURPRISE ! Cerv made a good throw !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please dont walk this loser
Come on Joba throw strikes!!!
mo better be warming up this second
Strikes Joba… You’re bad when nippleing
Y isn’t Robertson in?
cervelli did one good thing this game. that throw was sick
—————–
one good thing? he’s 3-3 today
good job not walking him. made him earn his way on.
Another fastball right over the plate…Joba needs to LOCATE on a consistent basis.
DP right here….. AJP is slow…
Joba’s fine. He’s got explosive stuff out there right now.
Let him be.
Can Joba ever have an easy inning ?
Throwing hard doesn’t help you if it’s on the middle of the plate.
He’s lucky Jones didn’t hit that pitch in the seats.
I hate seeing Joba in the game with only a 1 run lead. Stright fastballs and sliders in the dirt. I would rather see Robertson.
Everything is outside.
Regardless of what happens here, I have Mo pitch to Ramirez.
I don’t trust a Chamberlain-Ramirez matchup.
# Jeremy August 29th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
Can Joba ever have an easy inning ?
+============================================================+
Uh, no.
Cervelli picks up his 3rd baseman, very nice……Like a few have pointed out, where’s Pena ???….Is he being saved for a pinch running situation ????
Much rather have a single than a walk there.
He’s locating in this at bat on the outside corner, playing to Tschida’s strike zone today.
Always danger time when Joba is on the mound. Today is no different.
Andrew thinks this is 1999 because Smoltz is Calling the game…he’s hit it hard all day.
4 out save for Mo?
DRob warming in the pen, along Mo. I wonder if Joe wld use Mo for 4 outs.
Joba doing his job here.
Cerv didn’t stay down
Great a wild pitch…
If D-Rob is warming, why isn’t he out there now?
Another ball that has to be blocked and isn’t.
Cervelli giveth, Cervelli taketh away.
Smoltz is going on about Joba. He makes some good points, but he’s too close to Joba to making the kind of unequivocal comments he’s making in a national broadcast.
why can’t cervelli block ANY balls in the dirt…..
Watching 2 2-1 games
OK, it’s time for the SANDMAN!
Joba has missed location with his last 4 fastballs.
Bring in mo
Nunez leading off the 9th. Joe must want him hitting instead of Pena.
It was the best of Cisco, it was the worst of Cisco…
That was a strike…
Cervelli gives and then takes away, giving away a crucial base late here on a ball he should have blocked. He didn’t get his body down and it went right through his legs.
Cervellis D. Uggg
Nobody ever lauds our players. Smoltz is the ultimate professional, and him lauding Joba – especially in a national broadcast – should bring joy.
Thank god !
Good enough Job (a )
good inning for joba!
JOBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Terrific two innings by Joba. Mo in the 9th.
The Yankees bullpen has done an incredible job today. The defense and offense have been trying their hardest to give this away, and the pitching is saving their butts inning after inning.
solid performance by Joba….looking maybe like the Joba of old throwing 100 and all
Joba stepped up there.
bullpen has been REALLY good today. Watch mo be the one that has the bad outing today… lol
Jobalico!!!! You have to admit Girardi has pushed all the right buttons.
It wasn’t pretty, he missed location repeatedly but, he got the job done.
That’s all that matters.
Up to Mo to pitch a clean ninth.
I hope Pena is at third in the 9th.
# Nick in SF August 29th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
It was the best of Cisco, it was the worst of Cisco…
+==============================================================+
Maybe we should call him “Crisco” ( slippin’ away )
Is the bench calling this game? If so what about location? Just curious
Sorry, should’ve been more clear. Smoltzie is going on about how the Yankees screwed up Joba. Never mentioning that Joba needs to be accountable. And that he has had as much a chance as Hughes to find his “routine.”
Hopefully this isn’t one of those games where Mo doesn’t have it.
Joba just threw a very poor slider to Ramirez for strike two. It was loose and up in the zone. Despite that Ramirez swung threw it wildly. Why was that?
Because Joba had his good fastball today and was locating it fairly well. He was throwing so hard that Ramirez was out in front of a 90 mph slider and couldn’t take advantage of how poor that pitch was.
If Joba didn’t establish his fastball or was throwing at a lower velocity Ramirez may have hit that slider for a home run.
Joba hit triple digits.
Solid game all around, pitching-wise…..would love an insurance solo shot right now to help out Mo…but based on our offense today, I doubt that’s happening. If Mo is Mo, we will not be seeing anymore power bats today, although Teahan can hit…..great job(a) and love Wood…..most impressed with Nova, the kid took the ball and gave the Yanks a chance to win the series, and get some momentum heading home against an inferior Oakland team. Let’s hope by EOD we are either 6.5 up on Boston or 1.0 up on TB….come on MO!!!!!!!!!
The Yankees screwed up Joba? Ok, Smoltz……….right.
I’d say they will let Nunez hit here then pinch run Pena if he gets in and if not put him in at 3rd for the 9th
Guess I shouldn’t have assumed.
Well, Smoltz seems like an ultimate professional, so I’ll leave his comments about the Yankees screwing Joba up alone.
Joba idolized Smoltz and told him. Smoltz is only human. He can’
Lol cervelli is really showing you fools who is boss. 4 for 4 !
See what happens when you swing for ground balls and line drives and take level swings instead of home run swings, Frankie?! YES!
Oakland has lowest team ERA in A.L.
Cervelli has had a really good and bad day.
if we can finish this road trip 3-3 and then go home and go 7-3 or even 8-2 it would have been a great 2 week stretch considering the starting rotation, injuries, and inconstant offense.
But seriously they should demote Cervelli.
lol, Betsy. That does sound bad. He didn’t say it in so many words, but he hemmed and hawed but make no mistake he thinks it’s the Yankees fault that Joba hasn’t been able to find his rhythm or “routine”.
Cervelli is perfect at the plate. Nice.
I agree with m, no praise of Joba or implication that the Yankees have any culpabilty in his problems should go unanswered.
Francisco is 4 for 4!
Sign him for 10 years Cashman!
Was Mike Napoli placed on waivers? If so, he would be a great alternate to Posada for the stretch run…guy can hit, can also play 1B….great bench bat
M, that’s just ridiculous. I admit that the Yankees didn’t have the greatest plan with him last year and Wang’s injury screwed things up…BUT I still fail to see how taking him from games early made him pitch badly. When does he take the responsibility for not living up to his potential?
Mike Napoli was claimed by the Sox
# Betsy August 29th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
The Yankees screwed up Joba? Ok, Smoltz……….right.

Smoltz is a professional. But he also has a personal relationship with Joba. Which is why I thought he’s should be more objective. There are lots of factors. Injuries, Joba, and yes the Yankees. But you can’t lay the blame squarely on the Yankees.
If you can start, you should be able to relieve. And Smoltz, of all people, should know this.
Come on Gardy, steal a base and steal us a run here.
Ahhh saw Naps was claimed by Boston….they said a deal is unlikely however, so that’s good….
gotta lovve all the DP’s….cept Gardner can beat it out
Lol and he was safe on top of it
Davidson sucks, no matter what.
CB
I notiuced that slider as well. I think the only reason he got away with it, was the extra velocity he has today.
Montero goes deep. 3 run shot.
What a Schnoozer schnOzzie is. He was clearly safe by a mile.
How about you get thrown out versus the Red Sox in one of your 7 games later in the season against them.
I’d love to land a crescent kick right to Ozzie Guillen’s head.
I would be very surprised to see the Angels make a deal with the Sox for Napoli. The Angels have no great love for the Sox given the pounding they keep taking from them.
Don’t understand the angels. The just place such little value in Napoli and have underutilized him for years.
Trevor, of course………. I don’t get why Joba gets a pass from everyone in the media. Do they think the Yankees are incompetent? Let’s see – Phil has not missed one start due to an injury and he’s been fine as a #5 starter. Nova is showing a lot of promise and so are the 3 Bs. Maybe, just maybe, the Yankees know what they are doing?
Not only was Gardner pretty clearly safe, it didn’t look like Ramirez touched second base.
maybe Jeter can be “Captain Clutch” huh…maybe, maybe
Jenks is slow to the plate and doesn’t hold runners well. Gardner needs to go now.
The league source that reported the claim indicated that the Sox may have done that to block another team………..
Well at least Jete’s can’t hit into a DP.
“How about you get thrown out versus the Red Sox in one of your 7 games later in the season against them.”
Or use his closer for 1.1 innings when he is TRAILING by 1 run… let’s see him do that against the Sux

okay jeter, time for a cluuutch hit
Good job Gardner.
Gardner could easily have 50 steals.
gotta love that Gardner…now to complete the puzzle, Jeter gets a base hit
Good job by Gardner. He went early enough in the count where jeter isn’t going to need to try to protect.
Robbed
oh well….Mo time
Ugh, lucky stab. Lets go mo.
jeter got hosed, not his fault.
but jeter having a bad season
Konerko would not have made that play, tough break.
Tank
I wouldnt put it past Ozzie. Ozzie seems to care about winning, no matter the opposition. He proved himself in the 2005 ALDS.
damn, tough luck for jeter right there.
When has Jeter been clutch? This season? At all?
3 please…the easy way
Hit it hard…good play there. let’s go Mo.
Mo better not blow this one. That would really be devastating.
Kotsay has always hurt the Yanks no matter what team he has been on.
Ain’t that the way it goes? If Gardner had still been at first base, that’s a base hit and 1st and 3rd.
You know it’s a bad year when even when you do everything right, you get robbed.
Kotsay saved an insurance run.
Up to Mo now.
well, the team got a lead for mo in the 9th… that is the formula to win games. Time to close the door big man.
Joba…. Phil!
Joba……. Phil!!!
Man, Cervelli having an odd game. The showing up of the ump was just plain poor catching. Stay down and get the K, dammit!
CR9 and Faiaz – no idea what the obsession is with Zlatan – he’s utter CRAP. Most overrated player in Europe by absolutely miles, scored one or two flash goals in his time and that’s it. Truly awful striker.
Faiaz – btw, not sure if (as always) i’m losing this in translation, but “hop off my jock” is one of the funniest things i’ve seen in a while.
Come on Mo, close it out, please…
Nick – how goes it pal, great win yesterday against the Fat Walrus’ hordes…
Hopefully Mo can get 3 easy outs…
Regardless on what side of the fence you are rearding Ozzie, I just find him to be very entertaining….Good manager as well……..Funny dude, outstanding ss in his day
Lets go mo! 2 more.
1 down
That was easy.
there be one…two more to go
Dano
I have no opinion on Zlatan as a player. Haven’t seen enough of him. The only obsession I have with him is that he’s HOT! and Sexy Tall!
If that 0-1 pitch to Beckham was not a strike, i don’t know what is
Dano, good to see you. I really, really wanted to wake up and watch the Gunners yesterday, but… 4:30 a.m. was just too early. Nice win against a tough foe (lately).
Good draw in the Champions League?
What an exciting game this has been. All the chess moves and the fact that our troops are depleted this would be a good win. My fingers are crossed. Lets go MO.
this ump blows
Beckham is on everything right now.
can’t afford to that
oh, no. When mo walks batters its not a good sign.
This loser just worked a walk against the greatest closer in baseball history. by fighting off pitches and taking close pitches. sickening loser.
Mo not very sharp today. Everything is a struggle right now, and this should be no different.
Number 9 hitter on three more times today.
The Achilles heel of the staff all season.
For whatever reason, nobody seems able to get #9 hitters out consistently on the staff all season.
Come on Mo…..DP PLEASE….we haven’t had one all day…..
in Mo we trust!
Nick – oh, absolutely plum draw (as we say). no complacency, but… sp*rs, on the other hand, HA! may they continue to struggle after a midweek game…
Fat Sam got no grand slam yesterday, thankfully.
Come on Mo
Meanwhile….no Konerko is looking pretty good right now
The only thing sickening are your posts, moron.
Good job and decision Cano
good job by Robbie…it would be hard to double up Pierre, as much as it would be to double up Gardner
Very good play by Robbi to have the composure to get the lead runner at second. The play at first was easier and more direct.
Death,…Taxes,….Rivera
Big win baby!
I told u!
GREAT WIN
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
He’ll grab some bench!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great W.
That was a better play than it looked for Cano.
His arm gave him the ability to make that play.
Great job and Mo does it again.
Great win!
lol i don’t know why Cervelli is so hyped…but we definately needed that win!!!!!!!!!
That’s a Mo down !!!
Nice win. Great pitching and nice play there by cano at the end.
and Nova gets his first major league win…and our bullpen was back to their usual goodness
ChiSox is tough cookie
Can’t help it, I just love Cervelli.
My favorite kind of game. One-run lead throughout the game.
grats Nova on his first win
You can put it on the BOOOOAAAARRRDDD! Yes!
i have not felt this good after a win in a long time. I don’t remember the last time we won a road series. 3-3 despite aj, javy, the inconsistant offense, and injuries to andy, tex, arod, berkman. Time to go home, get healthy, and win some games.
Anymore predictions Ruby Tuesday/California?
What a pathetic Red Sox troll you are.
Hopefully, your third place team can win tonight.

+============================================================+
And it’s already on the board !
Damn only two players who played in the 80′s left. I feel old
Really decent bullpen work today after a couple of hiccups last night and a not so solid Sabathia outing.
2-1 Yankees win!
And some were worrying about Mo having a bad game?
Yeah, once every 60 games of so.
He ain’t called the Sandman for nothin.
Very nice win against a team that is playing for their playoff lives, and have been hitting the rubber off the ball lately!
Nova is the MVP, but Francisco has to be given credit for a nice game offensively.
This series was huge, and the Yankees played like World Champions – onward and upward!
Does Nova win a Chevy ?
Cervelli did score a run, so I guess he had a plus day with his hits, even though he didn’t do as well defensively. ( and base running ) Hope he gets better if he’s to play down the stretch much.
Hey 4 NYY,
Oakland’s Team ERA is largely due to their home ballpark.
Home ERA 2.86 vs. Road ERA 4.18.
If we get some of our players back, A-Rod, Berkman and Texiera, we should be alright in this upcoming homestand.
I have to think that either AJ or Vasquez will bounce back in the next month, can’t get any worse, no?
All in all, if we can get between 95-98 wins, that should be enough for the division lead, that means we barely have to play above .500 for September, plus, we have 2 more games to close out August.
Considering all of the recent poor string of starting pitching, some key injuries and having a few AAA players on the team, we should be grateful to still have the best record in baseball.
Imagine if we were 5 games back of TB, battling the Red Sox for the WC? This blog would be full of BS! LOL!!!!
GO YANKS GO!!!!!!!!!

Have to say, I agree with you. We just have to play the games, that’s the fun part.
