Of course, I was wrong. Sigh. LOL

Nick Cafardo’s column today had a seemingly random but very interesting note in it.

Cafardo rarely discusses the minor leagues. And when he does it’s usually about the Red Sox.

But today in his sunday baseball notes column had a note about Dellin Betances.

    8. Dellin Betances, RHP, Yankees — Scouts are ga-ga over Betances, a 6-foot-8-inch, 245-pound righthanded starter whom the Yankees have moved up to Double A Trenton. Betances is 16 months removed from Tommy John surgery, but you wouldn’t know it. “He could move fast now that he’s healthy,’’ said one NL scout of the hard thrower. “The Yankees have some good young arms coming. With Hector Noesi, D.J. Mitchell, and Ivan Nova between Double A and Triple A, they’ve got some reinforcements on the way.’’

Just a guess, but Cafardo may have been speaking to some scouts and the scouts must have brought up Betances’ name and raved about him. Cafardo is unlikely to even know who Betances is. Recently Jim Callis said that the Yankees farm system is better than the Sox and Keith Law sort of said something similar (or at least a major change from how he viewed the organizations at the start of the season.

I wonder if Cafardo may have been following up on those evaluations and asked about Yankee pitching and Betances’ name came up. The notion of the yankees having a better farm system than the Sox has created significant cognitive dissonance amongst some Sox fans. Or perhaps Cafardo was asking about the Yankee’s system in follow up to Nova’s last start.

It’s just odd that in a column section with 9 notes about players in baseball Cafardo would talk about a Yankees prospect who wasn’t even a top 100 prospect going into the season.

The best part of it is that the scout brings up Noesi, Nova and DJ Mitchell as guys on the way to “help” and while those are three guys in triple A and the closest now to the majors they aren’t close to the most talented guys the yankees have in the system.

    Hi Erin,

I missed GTLU, but I too would have sat Tex. Did you have fun last night? You certainly brought the Yankees good luck :)

  4. Betsy August 29th, 2010 at 11:27 am

I wouldn’t have played him – would have given him an extra day – but ok.

Hi Fran-I had a great time. I don’t have much of a voice today I was screaming so much last night. LOL And Robbie’s 3 for 5 night was because he sensed my presence in the crowd. ;)

Good to see that Texeria is in the lineup…….

Erin, you’re his good luck charm. Maybe you should go to the game again today :)

If it becomes widely reported that the Yankees have a better farm system than Boston then the real discord with the Sox fanbase may begin….that was always what they pointed to…how they outsmarted the big bad evil empire through player development.

Cervelli. Ugh. .OPS of.471 for the months of June, July and August.

Geno might be able to add a little pad to his batting glove but fingers crossed he doesn’t have to brace himself at 1st diving for anything.

Thanks Doreen! I knew Robbie would come through. :)

It was so cool to see Nunez’s first home run. There were a lot of Yankee fans in my section and none of us could believe it!

  17. Doreen August 29th, 2010 at 11:47 am

Oh, there were no matching lineups in today’s GTLU

    Sigh.

  18. SAS August 29th, 2010 at 11:47 am

    Erin,

Thanks for bringing home the win last night. Robbie did good things for you. So glad.

  19. Rich in NJ August 29th, 2010 at 11:49 am

Cervelli is still on the roster?

  20. SAS August 29th, 2010 at 11:50 am

    Thanks Jeers,

    Now the “nickname” makes sense.

  21. SAS August 29th, 2010 at 11:51 am

    Thanks. Now it makes sense

    SAS,
Hi. Don’t know if this was answered for you yet but I believe Bucholz is called laptop because he stole some laptop computers when he was in high school.

    Erin,
Have fun at the pool party.

  23. Pat M. August 29th, 2010 at 11:53 am

Today’s player of the game….Curtis Granderson…….He read Tin Cup’s comments….He doesn’t want to undressed by the Skipper

  24. Rich in NJ August 29th, 2010 at 11:53 am

Since Callis acknowledged that the Yankees have a better farm system, maybe the idea that BA has an anti-Yankee bias is wrong.

  25. Erin August 29th, 2010 at 11:53 am

    Thanks SAS. :)

Buchholz is a criminal. He deserves to be in Federal FMITA Prison, as he is a criminal of the worst kind.

    Rich in NJ

I dont think that disproves it. What it really shows is that the Yankees system is so good, that even an anti-Yankee like him was forced to acknowledge it – so as to maintain the slightest level of professionalism.

  29. Erin August 29th, 2010 at 11:57 am

Ledger_Yankees Pettitte threw 35 pitches in pen, felt good, upped the intensity a bit, another good sign.

    :D

  30. Betsy August 29th, 2010 at 11:57 am

Well he won’t have to steal the Cy Young award……….he’s the front runner at this point.

  31. Betsy August 29th, 2010 at 11:59 am

    Good news about Andy…………

    CR9

There is a reason that the farm system is highly rated. A lot of question marks were answered in a positive way because a lot of guys coming off of injuries have really developed.

The converse is that prior to the season, because there were so many question marks, and because big prospects like AJack and Vizcaino were traded, it was reasonable to rate the system as being below the RS.

That’s what BA did at the time, yet a number of Yankee fans thought BA was being unfair.

More importantly, I want to see the Yankees hold on to most of these guys.
