Burnett improves, Yanks win fifth in a row

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Sep 01, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Athletics Yankees BaseballA few hours after getting a good report from Andy Pettitte, the Yankees got another round of positive news on their pitchers as A.J. Burnett broke out of his latest funk. Burnett allowed three runs in six innings to earn his first victory since July 28, and the Yankees beat the A’s, 4-3.

Mark Teixeira drove in three to provide most of the offense on the night, while Derek Jeter singled and scored twice. Joba Chamberlain, Boone Logan, Kerry Wood and – of course – Mariano Rivera got the final nine outs as the Yankees won their fifth straight.

The great Soriano has done it again.

  2. Rich in NJ September 1st, 2010 at 10:05 pm

I’m not sure if AJ was good or the A’s offense is bad, or both, but it’s a building block.

  3. CR9 September 1st, 2010 at 10:05 pm

SIT DOWN SKURT!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! This piece of crap Skurt Suzuki had the audacity to step out on Mariano Rivera. Hey, Skurt, step out on Josh Beckett and he lays a ball upside your head!

And the Rays win!!! Rays win!!

“Vernon Wells triple keeps hope alive”

    :(

I played Vernon Wells last week and he was awful. So I sat him since he’s not known for great hitting on the road – and he’s raking.

I sat Andres Torres last week before he had gone cold the week before. He got 26 fantasy points (that’s a lot) as I sat him – meaning I got nothing. I played him this week and he’s gotten nothing.

    Grr!

  5. blake September 1st, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Pretty good spot to be in having already won the series and CC going tomorrow.

  6. rconn23 September 1st, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Jays had a chance with Wells on thirs with one out but Adam Lind, who has been one of the worst players in the AL this year, K’d and Buck flies out t oend it.

    Good win by the Yankees.

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 1st, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Funny, several posters kept saying they believed AJ would go on a roll in September. I was one of them but I wouldn’t think otherwise! :)

    Well, it’s September!

The guy is inconsistent, but he definitely has the ability to get the job done. So we just keep rolling with him.

    GOOD JOB AJ!

  8. rconn23 September 1st, 2010 at 10:07 pm

    Oh Ruby,

It’s sad to see a Sox troll lower themselves to backing the Rays. Have some pride. I know that’s tough for you.

  9. LGY September 1st, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Burnett has a 5.15 ERA this season.

Tonight, he gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. That translates to a 4.50 ERA.

It was only the 4th time all season that his in game ERA was within even a full run in either direction (4.15-6.15) of his 5.15 season ERA.

  10. mick September 1st, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Rather see Burnett Improves than Burnett Implodes anyday

  11. mick September 1st, 2010 at 10:09 pm

AJ is consistent, with his inconsistency.

  12. SJ44 September 1st, 2010 at 10:09 pm

    Rich,

    Probably a combination of both.

The bullpen is going to be a real strength for this team down the stretch and in the post-season and that could help offset any of the shakier outings from the starters.

  13. LGY September 1st, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Speaking of pizza. If anyone is ever looking for some great pizza in the city, I went to a place last week that has the most authentic Italian pizza I’ve had outside of Italy. It’s called Keste Pizzeria.

  14. SJ44 September 1st, 2010 at 10:13 pm

John’s on Bleecker St. Is my must stop for pizza when I’m in the city.

However, the best pizza in America is in New Haven.

    Sally’s, Pepe’s and Modern Pizza.

“The Sox are losing again and I don’t like it.

I want their fans to keep that last glimmer of hope as long as possible just so they can be crushed at the end”

    :D

Jeers, you’re singing my song. I always tell people it’s much more satisfying to watch it go down to the wire and then see them crushed! However, they are winning in Baltimore tonight.

About glimmers of hope. Trust me, they’re still holding on to it. And if the win this game they’ll do so even more.

Poor Sox… they (potentially) have a nice rally win, overcame Lester’s bad start, and Francona pulled out all stops to win (Lester for 121 pitches, Bard for 2 innings)…. and they gain 0 games because NY and TB won. Still 8 back in the loss, 7 in the WC.

    hahaha

  20. Yogi Mantle September 1st, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Bullpen has been doing a very good job. Joba looking better and pitching with more velocity than we’d seen for a long time.

Wood was a very good pick up. He is giving up more walks than I’d like, as that can come back to bite you, but he seems to do well even with baserunners on.

The bigger problem the Yankees have is that Kay announces far too many games.

  21. Pepitone September 1st, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I’m actually curious where you had that last good slice of pizza 47 years ago.
    ————————————
    Sure …

My uncle was the all-time greatest pizza conniseur, and he lived in National City (San Diego) at the time. He took me, with his family, to this place on Pacific Ave. right near the Marine Corps Depot. It was one of those little Italian restaurants that no one knows about, except those who know great Italian food. I remember the sauce was like nothing I ever tasted then, or now, and the mushrooms, sausage, cheese, and crust was unbeliveable!

I have had pizza since then that has had equally good cheese, or sauce, or crust, but none have had all ingredients combined as good as that one.

I understand New York pizza is special, hopefully one day I can go out there and try one – the real thing, not some imitation like we have here in L.A. You know, “Right Here, Ladies and Gentlemen, Genuine New York Pizza!” Blah!

It seems that Burnett has been on and off depending on the month. If I recall he had a horrible june but turned around and had a decent july followed by a horrible august. At this rate if he has a decent september we can assume that he will be horrible in october.

“Try it and find out. Its a completely different pizza from their old one.”

I actually didn’t know they changed their product. Hey if it’s better than what they were putting out, it’s worth the try.

We have a Little Caesar’s that just moved in near where I live. For some reason I haven’t had the desire to try it. Eventually I know I’ll do it.

I’ve had California Pizza Kitchen; it’s good, but it falls far short of that little Italian place in San Diego.

One thing I cannot stomach is these chains; Little Caesar’s, Domino’s, Papa Jon’s, heck, I even had pizza from Chicken Delight that tasted better than those chains.

They all taste like cardboard, or they are all dough. Yeeechh.

And in the end, they will be eating their young, because they will turn on the team and Sux management so fast your head will spin. Bronx,

You too! Man, I loved the pizza when I have been to Italy. Could live on that stuff (basically did for a few months  )

It is actually pretty funny. I have had the best pizza in my life in Italy. I have also had the worst pizza in my life the one time I got pizza delivered when I was there. I rarely eat regular pizzeria pizza anymore – bad tomato sauce and fake cheese. I usually go to this coal-fired oven place near me: great and real tomato sauce and REAL mozz

Nice win. I still wouldn’t trust AJ – he’s always one pitch from disaster- but he kept it together and got the win, so good job.

I really like this pen. Can you believe how far Logan has come? Amazing, just amazing.

I love Kerry Wood – he’s been a terrific pickup and he’s a really good guy.

VERY happy for Sir Lancelot who has taken too much grief over a few bad games. He’ll be a real asset.

I’ll have to check out some of those pizza places. So far nothing in Manhattan has blown me away (and for the love of god stay away from Pronto Pizza… you eat it and you head for the bathroom – pronto!)

The best pizza I’ve ever had is Post Corner Pizza in Darien, CT. (Greek I believe) If you ever get a chance I highly recommend it.

Phil will get the benefit of the doubt when he reaches Lester’s status – that’s how it is unfortunately. I also think the media is infatuated with the hot new thing, Nova, and Phil sort of suffers in comparison (according to them). “I know that Boston is in trouble but they still have 6 games with the Yanks and games left with the Rays.I’ll feel better when they are officially eliminated ”

Fran, I understand what you’re saying, and I definitely want it for you since it’s going to be awesome once the deed is done. But for me, I like the slow torturous death. In fact, I wouldn’t mind them being eliminated the last AB of the last game of the regular season, with the bases loaded and nobody out, and having the opposition (us, right?) make a triple play to end their dreams!

I really love the good theatre aspect of it. And I just love listening to the fenway faithful cheer like the really believe it’s possible, with their head crying voiced fool, Don Orsillo, bellowing out every call as if the Suxers have just won the world series.

And then everything was quiet. And their season was over as quickly as it began. The (Sux), against all odds, were on the brink of pulling off a miracle. It came down to the last at bat of the last game of the regular season, and against their biggest rivals, the New York Yankees. With the bases loaded and nobody out, one hit away from taking the lead for the final time in the regular season, a season filled with landmines for the (Sux), but landmines that they continued to manage to dodge, David Ortiz came to the plate. And with a 3-0 count, Joba Chamberlain threw a pitch right down the middle, and Ortiz topped it and amazingly hit into a 5-4-3 triple play. The fenway crowd, so loud that the green monster was vibrating and fans in the monster seats were falling into the outfield, suddenly became eerily quiet. And that quickly, it was over.

Ah the theatre. You just can’t hate the theatre!

I think Jeter demonstrated an athlete’s single-minded focus. He knows that his stats are bad, for him, but he can’t let himself think about that, and he wasn’t about to allow Kim’s question (which was fair) to force him to think about it either.

For me, the sauce is half the battle, the crust is the other half, and the final half is the toppings. (Yogi’s I-talian too!). His dough is to die for and his sauce is amazing. He uses fresh basil on his margarita pizza and he also uses carmelized onions and portabella mushrooms. I won’t get it anywhere else.

Alright, over under 21-game suspension for Nyger Morgan?

Here’s a recap of his past two weeks.

    1) Threw a baseball into the stands at a fan in Philadelphia, was slapped with a 7-game suspension (that he is appealing).

    2) Collided unnecessarily with St. Louis catcher, Bryan Anderson, last Saturday. His own manager called it “unprofessional.” (via ESPN)

    3) Collides with C Brett Hayes last night in a controversial play. Hayes has a separated shoulder and will miss some time.

    4) Gets plunked tonight, steals 2nd and 3rd in an 11-run game. He takes out 2B Murphy, who then has to leave with a wrist injury (and will miss time). He is thrown behind and charges the mind, punching P Volstad. When he leaves the field, he’s taunting the crowd and shouting obscenities.

Gonna be a fairly big suspension, no?

always enjoy pizza talk. Thanks everyone.

before moving to NY, NY pizza was the pinnacle (IMO). And any other form of pizza was sacriledge.

will admit, i now find myself prefering Chicago style pizza. For one, it has the crumble italian sausage (not the sliced sausage all NY shops insist on). Additonally, the tomato sauce is normally plentiful. Which is nice, because i kinda get tired of asking for extra-extra sauce at NYC shops. Chicago pizza resembles a meal, more than a snack

I hope all of you baseball fans have been enjoying the Lincecum-Jimenez duel.

The Gigantes just scratched out a run to take a 2-1 lead into the 9th, the run came courtesy of a leadoff walk, a sac bunt, and then some swift baserunning by a call-up speedster who got to the ballpark mid-game.

And now the game is in the hands of noted arsonist Brian Wilson.

Also, don’t know whether you saw it, but I will have my first ‘n and out burger shortly.

  179. CB September 1st, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Terrific win tonight. AJ was better. He’s so streaky with his mechanics. Let’s hope he gets on a roll.

Great night yet again down on the farm. Montero goes deep again. He’s now close to .290 and his slugging % is over .500. Gary Sanchez hits yet another home run (what a season he’s had as a 17 year old – he’s been considerably better than Montero was at that age, though he doesn’t have the upside).

And Brackman was very good again. It’s nice to see him getting so many ground balls. Ultimately that’s what you hope he turns into – a pitcher who strikes out a ton of hitters and generates ground ball after ground ball because he throws with such a down hill plane.

Tomorrow they go for the sweep with CC on the mound. Nice way to finish up a series.

Nova, Nunez on incredible journey together

“I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was a kid. My favorite player has always been Derek Jeter,” said Nunez, 23, whose natural position is shortstop. “You have that dream since you’re a kid, and knowing that I have the opportunity to play with him, its like a dream. It really is.”…

In December 2008, the Padres claimed Nova from the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft, but were forced to return him to New York when the right-hander failed to remain on San Diego’s roster for the entire 2009 season

“When they sent me back to the Yankees, I would say I was somewhat sad because I didn’t make the team,” said Nova. “But once I was reunited with the guys again, it was like I was back with the family.”…

“He’s like my brother. The first time they called me, that he was still [in the Minors], we would talk every day. I would always tell him, ‘Keep working hard,’” said Nova. “I would talk to [fellow Dominicans Robinson] Cano and Damaso [Marte], but with the rest of the guys, I didn’t have that trust. It was hard.”

When prompted to describe their friendship, Nunez echoes Nova’s sentiments.

“We’re better friends off the field than on the field,” said Nunez. “We’ve always lived together. He’s like my brother.

    “Oprah doesn’t know her pizza.
But I did see her once tackle some serious BBQ in Harlem.
It was a very impressive performance”

Nick, I love green-chili cheeseburgers! Last year I was planning a trip to Santa Fe and I did a ton of research……mostly on food, lol. Unfortunately, I decided not to go because I didn’t feel like dealing with a connecting flight into Albuquerque…………….but I still crave the GCCB

I was not aware of this New Haven pizza phenomenon, but I think I have to investigate it sometime after reading all these comments.

    Bronx,

I’m a fan of the just one big slice of meat thrown on the pie. They don’t cut up the pizza into slices either. Just take it out of the oven, throw it down on the table, and do what you want with it!

Morgan should sit for the rest of the season. Horrible behavior.

so, what’s wrong with Morgan stealing bases? That’s his job and it was his team that was trailing….not the other way around.

    Doesn’t have the upside yet.

Whitey Herzog first implemented stealing bases when up/down by a lot of runs as a way to manufacture runs.

No issue at all. Morgan was trying to steal a run and make it 13-5

Fans have some odd ideas when they decide what’s dirty or unnecessary. Was Teixeira dirty for separating Bobby Wilson’s shoulder in Anaheim? Was the slide in to Guillen of Detroit dirty because he got hurt. Common sense has never been some fans strong suit.

My 2 cents on the Pizza debate…
    Fortino’s in Grand Haven, Mich
and “can’t remember the name” in Keane, NH
