They had better stay off of the mound!!!

the outfield defense this season is significantly better than a year ago as well….which also contributes to that run differential

    ——————

Agreed. Really, their defense has been good everywhere this yr except for catcher.

  3. Shame Spencer September 2nd, 2010 at 10:03 am

…we’re still talking about Derek Jeter?

  4. Shame Spencer September 2nd, 2010 at 10:04 am

^directed at the last thread.. Country Club and GoldGlove aren’t the perpetrators :)

  5. Howe Farr September 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 am

At this point last year, the yankees were on pace to win 102. Right now, they are on pace to for a 100-62 record.
This years team is as good as last year team, the difference is 2 games.

  6. Patrick September 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 am

Ok I’m leaving for the game in about an hour and a half and I’m thinking about running onto the field and across the mound. Only problem is, I’m worried about the 209′s reaction. They don’t do much talking there so it will be tough to discern but I feel like they might be mad that I’m breaking the unwritten rules of baseball.

  9. CountryClub September 2nd, 2010 at 10:08 am

Magic number for a playoff spot is 22

  10. JM September 2nd, 2010 at 10:10 am

What a shame it is that Arod is not playing today. He and Dallas could have had a nice chat.

  11. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 10:11 am

    CC,

Nobody ever talks about it but the Yankees right side infield defense and left side outfield defense is among the best in baseball and is solid everywhere else. Catcher is the only spot that has been spotty.

  12. Mgumpher September 2nd, 2010 at 10:15 am

blake, its rare when you hear the media talking up much that is positive about the Yankees. The media in general thrives on bringing up negative things anyway.

  13. Shame Spencer September 2nd, 2010 at 10:15 am

CountryClub – its sorta like when you catch a marathon of a bad show you’ve already seen.. but you end up re-watching every episode anyway.

  15. upstate kate September 2nd, 2010 at 10:20 am

now c’mon Blake, Joe Morgan has been a Cano fan for years.

I am surprised by how good GGBG has been at outfield assists. I thought that was one area in which Melky was better, but altho Melky had a strong arm, he wasn’t always accurate.

  16. SAS September 2nd, 2010 at 10:21 am

    Good morning all,

I think, but wouldn’t swear to it, that Chad made a comment earlier this week that it was too bad Arod wasn’t playing today.

  17. CountryClub September 2nd, 2010 at 10:21 am

Blake, no doubt. It’s an underrated part of their game. It really is a stacked team. Arguably the best O in the game, a very solid D, a more than solid pen with the best closer in the game and a true number 1 leading the staff. They need to get Andy back (healthy) and they need one more pitcher to get hot.

If the staff gets straightened out, they will be huge favorites to win it all again.

Agreed and as you say, all things being equal the Yanks still have Rivera and everyone else doesn’t…that matters in the postseason.

  21. stuckey99 September 2nd, 2010 at 10:37 am

To follow-up on Howe’s thesis last thread, I got slightly different numbers.

The league scored an average of 747 runs in 162 games last year, and average of 4.61.

This year they have scored and average of 588 runs in an average of 133 games, 4.42 per.

    That’s a overall decrease of 4.2%

    Yankees,

    2009: 915 runs /162 = 5.64 per

    2010: 721 rsun /133 = 5.42 per

    3.9% decrease.

Their drop-off in runs scored is lesser than the league-wide average, which is even slightly higher than 4/2% if you remove the Yankees from the equation.

  22. Andrew September 2nd, 2010 at 10:41 am

If SJ is out there, do you have any insight onto what changed between A-Rod and Boras to lead to Alex dismissing him as his agent? I remember all the talk of how Alex went around Boras to renegotiate with the Yankees (even though Boras was ultimately still his agent) after he opted out. Also feel as though there were rumblings of how he had turned to others in the wake of his PED admission as opposed to taking only Boras’ advice (although if I remember correctly Boras was with him leading up to the interview w/ Gammons/press conference)

  23. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 10:43 am

    Stuckey,
Interesting…so this year’s offense is actually performing better in relation to the rest of the league than last years.

  24. CR9 September 2nd, 2010 at 10:45 am

    Dano England

I knew the whole back story already on SAF not talking to the BBC. I agree with it. They disrespected his son and called into question his son’s practices, and so SAF sticks by his principles and doesn’t speak to them. It is very noble of SAF to defend his son in such a manner.

My favorite part of that article, though: “I think because he’s the manager’s son that’s a major factor. I think, so he’ll come in [to the training ground] and talk to his players. He can come in whenever he can. Other agents would have to make an appointment.”

My goodness, how dare SAF give his son preferential treatment over other agents!

  25. SJ44 September 2nd, 2010 at 10:46 am

    Andrew,

I do but, its something that’s not really for public consumption unless Alex wants to speak on it.

Best way to phrase it is, they outgrew one another and parting was in everyone’s best interests.

  26. upstate kate September 2nd, 2010 at 10:48 am

altho all the talk is about Toronto, very quietly the Yankees are having another good year via the HR
Tex now has 30, Robbie has 26, and Swish 25.
Despite missing time on the DL, Alex has 21, Po has 16

  27. CountryClub September 2nd, 2010 at 10:52 am

    And Granderson quietly has 15

  28. upstate kate September 2nd, 2010 at 10:53 am

  29. CR9 September 2nd, 2010 at 10:53 am

Perhaps ARod figured out that Boras is a dirtpile. :)

I cant stand that weasel standing behind home plate during every Angels-Yankees game. He always knows how to be seen – how to position himself perfectly to be seen on TV.

  30. JCPD September 2nd, 2010 at 10:53 am

This is interesting about A-Rod and Boras

    http://hardballtalk.nbcsports......-agent.php

  31. Andrew September 2nd, 2010 at 10:53 am

Thanks SJ, certainly understand not saying much since there isn’t much info out there publicly right now on their splitting up. I guess ultimately Boras was still in place for the 2 biggest paydays of Alex’s career so he can’t be that upset about not representing him anymore, but it’s a bit surprising considering how A-Rod was presented as a full-on disciple of Boras (Alex stayed at his house for long stretches, is at least one anecdote I can remember) for so much of his career. Definitely speaks to the big changes in A-Rod the individual in the last couple of years, for the better at least IMO.

  32. CR9 September 2nd, 2010 at 10:56 am

“outgrew one another” lol! The truest sign yet that ARod is a remarkable human being who has turned his life around 180 degrees. He outgrew Boras because he became a genuinely good person while Boras remains a dirtpile! A rich dirtpile, but a dirtpile nonetheless :)

  33. Erica in NY September 2nd, 2010 at 11:00 am

Apparently A-Rod is optimistic about returning Sunday, but not 100% sure

  35. Pat M. September 2nd, 2010 at 11:02 am

Dodgers are a mess…..The divorce proceedings is the # 1 local news story…The financial numbers for the organization are ugly……..McCourt should never been allowed to by the club from Fox ( Murdock ), as he had very little cash….He leveraged all his parking lots in Boston as collateral and Selig pushed the deal through…….A mess for what once was one of baseball’s more elite organizations…..Much different than when the O’Malleys owned the franchise….Sad

That’s a pretty seething indictment of Mark Teixeira on your past CR9, as he remains a Scott Boras client.

Are you saying Teixeira isn’t a genuinely good person?

LOL!! LMAO! No, it’s not an indictment on Teixeira. Teixeira is a perfect human being. However, he probably just doesnt see Boras for the dirtpile he is yet. Kind of like how only a few of you see how all Bostonians and Boston athletes are all criminals!! You guys just dont see it yet. One day you will!

  40. Eduardo September 2nd, 2010 at 11:11 am

Boras is excellent at what he does, making money.

“No, it’s not an indictment on Teixeira. Teixeira is a perfect human being. However, he probably just doesnt see Boras for the dirtpile he is yet.”

So he’s a perfect human being that has dealt with Boras direct for a decade now and also happens to be a teammate of Alex Rodriquez that hasn’t yet noticed something so utterly obvious that you, no more than a fan with no more access to Boras other than what you see on TV and read on the internet, have?

You’re either saying he is not a genuinely good person or he’s a blithering idiot who can’t recognize the obvious.

No amount of “LOL”s are going to change your clearly stated low opinion of Teixeira.

  42. CR9 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:16 am

    stuckey

LOL You try too hard! Keep striving for mediocrity :)

  43. JM September 2nd, 2010 at 11:17 am

Boras made Alex a huge amount of money. He also made him look pretty bad the last time around.

Of course Alex is the one in charge and the one ultimately responsible for his decisions, but perhaps as he’s matured he outgrew the need for Boras. And of course he now has a contract through age 42 so I guess he doesn’t need his negotiating skills anymore.

  44. ac1 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:19 am

ARod doesnt need Boras anymore. He has a contract until 2017. What can Boras do for him at this point?

  45. raymagnetic September 2nd, 2010 at 11:20 am

There’s only one dirtpile on this blog right now. Although that can always change if the Yankees happen to lose today.

  46. raymagnetic September 2nd, 2010 at 11:21 am

Speaking of A-Rod and Boras – Everyone here knows that Boras negotiated Alex’s last contract, right?

Alex may have parted ways with Boras but it was Boras who got all the HR milestone incentives put into Alex’s contract.

  47. stuckey99 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:23 am

CR9, no, I simply recognize that emoticons do nothing to support a denial of something you’re on record posting not 15 minutes ago.

Mark Teixeira chooses to consort with a dirtpile whereas a genuinely good person would not.

You got some way to deny that that isn’t burying your head in the sand and pretending you didn’t, feel free.

  48. Jim September 2nd, 2010 at 11:24 am

Read this in an article in the Daily News (on taking Burnett out for the 7th):

After the bullpen made the decision pay off in the form of a 4-3 victory, Girardi said it was more about having a well-rested pen than anything else. But he admitted he wanted to get Burnett out on a positive note, something to begin rebuilding his confidence.

    ———

This is the key to having a confident/productive AJ and Vazquez – realize when they are either starting to tire or mentally breakdown and remove them before the meltdown. I don’t care if it’s the 7th or the 2nd, the more Girardi can get these guys out of the game without melting down the more successful they will be because it’s obvious that their mental state is more important to them than other pitchers like Pettitte and CC.

You’re too much! Mark Teixeira is a perfect person, on top of being smoking hot and sexy! Perhaps he consorts with Boras because he overlooks Boras’ flaws. Which would make Mark an even better than Alex. But, Im not sure that that is possible, considering Alex is greater than Mother Theresa was! :)

  50. tampayank September 2nd, 2010 at 11:27 am

Some Orlando political people are allegedly speaking about the Yankees affiliate at Noon. Let’s see if it’s newsworthy

  51. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 11:27 am

Wow, just saw the highlights of Chapman from last night. With that stuff if he can throw the ball anywhere over the plate he’s nearly unhittable….

That said….I don’t know how long the human body can hold up to that arm speed with that violent of a delivery….

  52. Giuseppe Franco September 2nd, 2010 at 11:28 am

Bernie Williams was a Boras client as well.

There have been a lot of Boras clients with the Yankees – A-Rod, Teixeira, Brackman, Bernie, etc, etc.

In fact, Boras seems to get along with Cashman better than he does most other GMs around the league.

Boras is in the business to make money and he does it better than anyone else. The other agents wished they had his kind of stature.

  53. Giuseppe Franco September 2nd, 2010 at 11:29 am

    Oh yeah, Johnny Damon, too.

  55. G. Love September 2nd, 2010 at 11:31 am

Arod really has no need for an agent anymore. He has a guaranteed deal until age 42 and since the PED admission, his ability to get national commercial ads has pretty much dried up.

When’s the last time you saw Arod in a commercial for anything other than a YES promo?

As for ridiculing Boras, I can’t. I work in a business where I have an agent and if my agent was 1/10th the negotiator and promoter that Boras is, I’d be paying someone else to type this entry for me.

  56. stuckey99 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:31 am

blake, I had an observation last night.

Chamberlain’s highest clocked fastball last night was 97 and it has an extremely downward plane, landing near Cervelli’s feet.

Chapman’s 104mph fastball was similarly at the catcher’s feet, on a downward plane. I can’t swear to this, but I think I’ve observed this before – fastballs registering a tick faster when they finish low in the zone.

I wonder if a ball traveling downward through the radar’s field, perhaps even out of it, registers faster?

  61. Giuseppe Franco September 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 am

The problem with Burnett, though, it that it’s quite evident early in the game whether he has it or not.

Many of his starts go south very early – innings 1 through 3. You can’t always take someone out that early in the game, especially if the bullpen was used early the previous day or two.

Sometimes, managers have to bite the bullet and somewhat concede the game and let the guy keep pitching and hope he eats some innings.

  62. stuckey99 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 am

“on top of being smoking hot and sexy!”

    Indeed.

“Perhaps he consorts with Boras because he overlooks Boras’ flaws. Which would make Mark an even better than Alex. But, Im not sure that that is possible, considering Alex is greater than Mother Theresa was! :)

Stucky called you out with your double talk concerning Tex re: Boras and per usual you have nothing intelligent to counter it with. Just like saying Brady deserved a blown out knee because of spy gate, it sounds like the rants of an insane person. How about toning it down a little?

I was hoping Adam Dunn would come in and take on the Marlins by himself.

  67. ac1 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:36 am

Boras is frustrating when he is playing hardball, but 95% of the time he will get his clients what they want and that is his job. GMs like Cashman will understand that. Truthfully, if i was a baseball player, my first choice would be Boras too.

The best was when Morgan was clotheslined. Clearly the Marlins were throwing at him over and over. He had already been hit in the game. He had a right to be upset, but he did instigate the beginning of the situation running into the catcher out of the baseline. And putting his arms up like he was the champ was just stupid. He will be target practice moving forward.

  71. ron September 2nd, 2010 at 11:39 am

  72. Joe from Long Island September 2nd, 2010 at 11:40 am

I think the reason why Boras and Cash get along relatively well is that they each realize that they have to be able to do business together. As a result, the relationship stays professional, and they don’t let it get sidetracked with personal issues.

Further, Cash seems to be very professional, and consistent, in his dealings. He sticks to what he says. The business with Alex renewing after opting out was because of Hank, not Cash. If you look at Tex’ negotiations, and Damon’s the first time, Cash set a line in the sand, so to speak, and Boras respected it. Cash doesn’t let Boras go shopping his offers. So, they get along.

At least, that’s my impression from afar.

My guess would be someone who has been extremely put upon in his life, is extremely resentful of people in general and has zealously aligned himself with and against certain things out of a defensive mechanism.

You’re a professional sports version of a high school goth kid.

But that would just be a guess.

  76. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 11:42 am

    Stuckey,
I do think that pitches down in the zone registar faster in radar guns…I read about the reasoning once before I think but can’t remember what it was…perhaps someone who does could enlighten us.

When Joba stays closed and on top of the ball he’s very good and that nasty tilt comes back on his slider….if only they could ever get him to do it all the time.

“It’s not about the numbers. We need to get really hot to make this thing interesting, really hot — hotter than we’ve gotten at any point during the year,” Epstein said. “We haven’t done that yet. It doesn’t mean we can’t do that.”

Hey, wizard…you have 29 games left. It’s reached the point in the season when it is about the numbers.

They threw at him again because he stole 2 bases in an 11 run game after he got hit the 1st time.

Obviously he felt he was wronged but he has too control himself & he lost it in multiple ways.I can see if he got hit the 2nd time or it was near his head but it was done in a professional way,it was done right by the marlins.

  80. upstate kate September 2nd, 2010 at 11:44 am

    Jim
it is not obvious to me that Javy has any problems with his mental state. Physically, yes, he has struggled, but IMO its not lack of toughness or guts. You could see how pleased his team mates were when he got the win the other night, that tells me they know how hard he tries.

and w/ AJ, sometimes you just have to let him clean up his own mess, you can’t always have the quick hook and burn the bullpen..

  81. raymagnetic September 2nd, 2010 at 11:44 am

“HR incentives were Warren Buffett’s idea not Boras’.”

Boras is still the one who negotiated the deal and is the one who’ll be making 5% commission when Alex reaches those milestones.

  82. pat September 2nd, 2010 at 11:45 am

    Joe

    Good take on it.

Going directly to George was always Boras’ “Break Glass in Case of Emergency” if things didn’t work the way he thought they would with Cashman.

Hank played the role of George in Alex’s negotiation.

Hal wouldn’t play the role of George in Johnny Damon’s.

It wasn’t just that he stole those bases. He slide through the bags into the infielders, obviously intentionally.

Never been overburdened. Ive lived and continue to live a free and easy life. Only resentful of Bostonians! And since Bostonians are not human, I dont see see a problem with it.

The only thing Im burdened by are these mental issues that plague me. Maybe my psychiatrist can help! Perhaps! Or if not, I’ll just continue to take pleasure in Perkins and Brady!

    Agreed?

I never understood how anyone fell for the narrative that A-Rod came back humbly to the Yankees after the opt-out incident.

He got what and and Boras wanted and more.

It was a masterful play by A-Rod AND Boras.

Of course SJ was right about Ted Lilly. I guess had I stopped to think about it a most unlikely trade at this point in time would be between the Dodgers and the Yanks.

    ***********

There are some baseball traditions – not superstitions – that really don’t make any sense to me. I was watching Mike and Mike this morning and they were discussing the Nyjer Morgan brouhaha and said that several baseball players, including John Smoltz, had said that Morgan shouldn’t have stolen 2nd and 3rd in the game with the Marlins (the Nats were down 10 runs at that point, early in the game) because he wasn’t doing it to score, he was doing it to rub in their noses because of whatever problems happened in the previous games.

What???? Your team is down 10 runs and you shouldn’t try to steal bases to score because “under the circumstances” it appeared he was doing it to shown up the Marlins, not to try to get in scoring position?

Mike and Mike thought that was an absolutely bizarre position to take, and I absolutely agree. Sometimes these accepted traditions are truly ridiculous.

I have never had any difficulty with players showboating after hitting homers either, though, and I know that’s a big no-no in the game. That shows up the pitcher? So did the homer friend.

    :)

“it sounds like the rants of an insane person”

Well, I am under the care of an excellent psychiatrist. But he hasnt made any strides with me yet.

A competent psychiatrist wouldn’t let you within a mile of his office.

I didn’t know that wich you are right it makes it a difinitive statement.

Then volstad simply, harmlessly threw behind him & low too just say we did not like what you did.

He simply has too know not too charge the mound & punch a pitcher in the face.

I did get booted (fired?) by my last psychiatrist for accusing him of being a Red Sox fan out to screw me.

By the way, he clearly was a Red Sox fan!

  90. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 11:51 am

    Cowherd.

“the Yankees are the national team”

“if ESPN weren’t based in New England and in love with the Red Sox then nobody would care about them”

Usually don’t agree with him but occasionally his wild and outlandish statements are good and funny.

Tricia, Morgan is a punk want to be thug…….His play in recent weeks is bush league, and not only will he feel the rath from other clubs, his teammates are going to get dragged into it….His skipper ( Riggleman ) benched him and blasted him as well for his bs…….Ballplayers have long memories

  92. ron September 2nd, 2010 at 11:56 am

Why is mo,jeter & the likes respected as much as anybody in the game, ever & more than players that show other players up?

Because they go about their business in a professional way,no showboating, etc…

You get a certain feeling about a player that showboats, just like you respect the crap out of mo for the way he carries himself.
There is a reason for that.

If anybody goes to an Angels game, don’t try to upset pitcher Trevor Bell by calling his grandfather a clown. He really was. Bob Bell was Bozo The Clown on WGN in Chicago.

  95. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 2nd, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I know what you’re saying. I guess I just think that the showboaters don’t have as much baseball savvy as the others but it doesn’t bother me to watch them do it. They’re just “louder” personalities.

  96. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 12:02 pm

man I used to love “The Grand Prize game” with Bozo…watched it every day.

    Ron
Tex, Swish, Thames, to name a few, are always complimentary to the other pitcher/team when they (Yankees players) have a good night. Thames seems to go out of his way to be humble, which I respect.
