Let’s send Morrow out in high style.

    I am tired of Toronto

GB, from stories people used to tell in the 50′s and 60′s, baseball was such a big deal that even teachers excused kids from school to watch the WS. That’s mind-boggling to me; that would never happen. Good old days? I think so.

    repost:

    cb,

great post as usual. i see your point. as my dad always said, “you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet” the red sox are going to be forced to get into ‘win now’ mode and get into bidding wars. no more mike cameron for cheap.

they may have to go back to the days of signing manny for huge money.

what do you think they’ll do this offseason?

  5. Betsy September 2nd, 2010 at 9:24 pm

I mean that would never happen today..

  6. ron September 2nd, 2010 at 9:24 pm

No big deal vaz replacing mosely.

  7. GreenBeret7 September 2nd, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Betsy, they’s allow transistor radios or teachers would bring tvs from home and we’d watch the games and the space shots….those were big deals back then.

  8. MTU September 2nd, 2010 at 9:29 pm

    Betsy-

GB was lucky he could get away with that. My father was a truant officer so needless to say I didn’t miss much school.

  9. GreenBeret7 September 2nd, 2010 at 9:31 pm

MTU, for some reason, the schools always wanted to pay for my trips….hotels…stay as long as I want. really nice of them.

  10. tyanksfan36 September 2nd, 2010 at 9:32 pm

They have got to beat Morrow this time. I can feel it. They’ve let him beat them a few times and were just waiting til his last start of the season to crush his spirit. It should be another good game. I think Nova will keep the streak going.

    ****************

When I was in high school I convinced a teacher to excuse me from giving a presentation on a certain day so that I could skip school and try to get in to see Stevie Nicks on Letterman.

I not only got permission from my teacher, but my parents. LOL

Before the RS won in 04 fans said they were willing to pay higher ticket prices in order to win.

They are now starting to not like those ticket prices so much.

From 04 to 08 you didn’t hear any complaints.

I hear it alot more now.

  16. MTU September 2nd, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Are they even gonna get this game in ? Aren’t very high winds predicted for NYC tomorrow ?

  17. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 9:39 pm

    MTU,

hope so…hopefully the bats will continue to stay hot as well. 2 of 3 in this series would be a really nice outcome.

I was working in a lawn and garden store in 78.

The boss and the other workers were RS fans.

He brought in a tv so we could watch the last game.

  19. Joe from Long Island September 2nd, 2010 at 9:42 pm

GB – I remember those days. But, how can that be, given our difference in age? :)

You know, the Red Sox may have regionalized their brand, going throughout NE – but it started me thinking. The Yankees have globalized theirs.

When we went to Florence and Rome in, we frequently saw locals wearing Yankee caps, the interlocking NY on a dark blue background (no pink hats, please). I lost count after I got into the high ‘teens.

And, when I turn on the TV, I see commercials for Ford, starring Derek Jeter, and for Dove soap, with Andy Pettitte and Joe Girardi. And, face it, when you see Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Joe Girardi, you think NY Yankees. Which makes the casual fan more likely to buy Yankee merchandise, and think about going to see a game next time in NY.

The Yanks realized a while ago that they live with a different business model than any other team. The Red Sox are now faced with the realization that their world is changing, do they want to change their model?

CB has long said that the most dangerous thing for baseball was for the Yankees to combine smarts, to go along with their financial resources. We are seeing that now. And, because of those resources, which are global and getting more so by the day, as long as they stay smart (and they will with Cash and Hal), no one will catch them.

I like being a Yankee fan. Being the defending champ, 84-50, and in first place will do that for a fan.

Not totally correct. The theachers told me that it was very safe to play on the tracks, though.

  28. CB September 2nd, 2010 at 9:49 pm

    kd-

I touched on what I thought they’d do with their own free agents in the last thread.

I also think they’ll trade Papelbon. That’s a huge key for them. If they can bilk a dumb team into over paying for a closer with diminishing stuff they’ll have done very well.

It sounds like Ellsbury may also get moved but his value will be very low this winter.

Personally, if I were them I’d consider trading Buchholz for Adrian Gonzalez. But I don’t think they’ll do that. And without Buchholz they can’t get Gonzalez.

Alternatively I think they should try to make a move for Prince Fielder. Given his contract situation and Boras Milwaukee will listen. But that sticks Boston with needing to negotiate with Boras on Fielders’s extension and they are not going to want to do that. They completely stayed away from Matt Holliday – a player they really should have signed because they didn’t want to deal with Boras.

Just think about how badly that supposed trade off has played out for the Sox. They supposedly made one offer for Holliday. It was rejected and then they moved that money to Lackey. That was lauded as a great value move for the sox.

But at this point – $120M for Holliday would have been a better investment than 82M on Lackey.

Finally, they need to almost entirely rebuild their bull pen. It’s in shambles. No idea how they do this. They don’t have the arms on the farm. Buying arms for the pen on the free agent market is the worst investment possible for the most part.

  31. Joe from Long Island September 2nd, 2010 at 9:52 pm

It’s funny – we went with some friends, who are Mets’ fans, and I brought one of my Yankee caps, just for sun cover. The first couple of times we saw locals with the NY, our friends just kind of chuckled. As it kept happening, over and over, I just started laughing. And laughing. And……

If I understand it right, Paplebon will be in line for over 10mil.

That could be hard to move with much in return.

Also Bard has promise but at this point I feel it would be a step backwards.

“But at this point – $120M for Holliday would have been a better investment than 82M on Lackey.”

I have little doubt the Sox would love to swap those two players contracts and all if given the chance. Really made no sense that they didn’t pursue him more last season…instead they signed Cameron and Lackey and will be right back in the same spot this winter….. needing a bat….

The worst thing about their bullpen is that they just traded the best setup man in baseball ;)

  38. CB September 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 pm

“You know, the Red Sox may have regionalized their brand, going throughout NE – but it started me thinking. The Yankees have globalized theirs.”

    Joe-

This is exactly right. When you look at the sports franchises that are the most valuable in the world it’s a few soccer teams and the Yankees and then a bunch NFL teams due to the way they divide the national TV money in football.

There is no other baseball team even remotely close to being what the yankees are in terms of value. It’s the only truly global American sporting property.

In many ways, the Red Sox aren’t the true comparison for the Yankees – it’s Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Maine, the only way that I could ever shot a round of golf is with a shotgun.

Everytime somebody talks about golf, I think of Caddyshack.

    Think of Randy as Carl.

Sandy: I want you to kill every gophers on the golf course!
Carl Spackler: Correct me if I’m wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they’re gonna lock me up and throw away the key…
Sandy: Not golfers, you great fool! Gophers! The *little* *brown*, *furry* *rodents* -!
Carl Spackler: We can do that; we don’t even have to have a reason. All right, let’s do the same thing, but with gophers -!

  48. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 10:06 pm

    Maine,

Lackey + Cameron will make a little over 26 million combined this season. Matt Holliday makes 17 million this season. Now obviously they would have needed to fill that rotation spot….but they could have filled it with pretty much anybody and gotten similar production as Lackey has provided.

  49. kd September 2nd, 2010 at 10:08 pm

    cb,

thanks for the reply. i think you’re right, without a 1b with a lot of power they will have offensive issues. agon is going to take a lot of prospects, probably more than they will want to give up.

prince fielder would be big papi version 2.0 for them. he’s a dh. but i don’t disagree with you that they’ll got after him.

i think they either spend a ton or finish in third again.

Three cheers for Sabbathia. He is having a great year!! But, there is no doubt that he is being supported by lots of runs.

Great run support!!- 7.37 R/Gm. Some of the others in the running for Cy Young haven’t been quite as lucky. Felix Hernandez, for example, has had only 3.92 R/Gm support. Here are some of the stats for the top 10 pitchers in the AL by ERA, plus a few others:
PLAYER TEAM ERA RS W-L WHIP
    Clay Buchholz BOS 2.21 7.24 15-5 1.18
    FelixHernandz SEA 2.38 3.92 10-10 1.10

    Carl Pavano MIN 3.52 5.57 15-10 1.15

Pettitte and Hughes have had great run support. Burnett and Vazquez, kind of average.
PLAYER TEAM ERA RS W-L WHIP
    Andy Pettitte NYY 2.88 8.48 11-2 1.20

There is only about 1 million dollars difference in per year salary with Lackey and Holliday. Lackey makes 18.7 this season then 15.95 for the remainder of the deal….Holliday makes 17 every year.

Nice photo. Do you think they even speak English? Or know what baseball is? The Yankee cap as a fashion accessory.

    MTU,

Yes, most likely. Either that or talk Curt Schilling into leading his advise.

  61. CB September 2nd, 2010 at 10:26 pm

“They had no option for pitching in their system.

What was out their on the cheap to sign?”

This is why if they were truly seeing this season as a “bridge year” they would have been better off just admitting that and living with it.

Instead they tried to play it half way and now they are stuck with a big contract they don’t want. Same thing for Beckett’s.

But in the end this the new pressures they have to face to meet the expectations of the fanbase who will otherwise not follow the team as closely.

The fundamental issue is that their drafts haven’t produced enough major league talent recently to replace all of the veterans that have aged since 2004.

They never replaced Manny, for example.

  62. MTU September 2nd, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Joe, I think they were Chinese, not sure from which actual country. They probably know what baseball is, but they definitely know what consumerism is: besides the Yankee cap and the iPad, you can see Nike and Converse sneakers in that pic.

These Singapore Yankee fans knew what they were doing:

I always had the opposite impression on baseball in the Philippines, Joe. It was big in the early 70s and even before. Huge stadiums.

In WWII, the final battle for Manila was fought in a baseball stadium.

  65. m September 2nd, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Looks like a great win with a dominant performance by CC.

There is one big difference between the sox and the yankees. If one of our pitchers goes down, there’s one or two or three inhouse replacements. Who from the Sox farm is going into their rotation next season? Who from their farm is shoring up their awful bullpen?

  66. blake September 2nd, 2010 at 10:30 pm

    Maine,

I don’t have a specific answer because I don’t know what they could have explored in trades. They probably didn’t have the chips to trade for Javy but may have for a serviceable 5th starter…At the time these decisions were being made the Sox starting rotation was already viewed as their strength even before adding Lackey. They needed a bat more than another starter as they had 4 guys already penciled in…Beckett, Buchholtz, Lester, and Dice K…..Lackey hasn’t been very good but Holliday still would have helped them more even if he had been IMO.

What really gets lost in all of this is it wasn’t Theo that built those championship teams.

    It was Duquette.

Theo did make some changes but alot of the team was in place when he got there.

He also inherited the problem of the favortism that Manny and Pedro got.

I don’t think he was dissapointed to see those two go.

That’s exactly right. Duquette is the guy who put so many of those pieces in place.

And even the draft success the Sox had early in theo’s regime was built on collecting draft picks from the veterans Duquette put together leaving via free agency. The Sox collected multiple, early round picks as those players left and that was a big part of their draft success.

Now they don’t have those pieces to directly or indirectly build on anymore.

In many ways, this is the first time it’s truly up to Theo to build his own team.

    Let’s see how he does.

Many Banuelos threw a very good game tonight:

    4 2/3 5 2 0 2 6 0

I’d guess he had to leave after 4 2/3 innings due to his pitch count.

That’s just great. At this point in time I think it’s very safe to say that Banuelos’ velocity has legitimately gone up and has reestablished a new baseline. He’s only 19 so that’s not something that’s so unusual.

    But it’s great to see.

Left handed with that velocity, advanced repertoire and command – he’s an elite, blue chip arm.

It’s very difficult to underestimate the value of plus left handed pitching for the yankees in that stadium.

The questioning of his frame/durability will probably always follow Manny B, but plenty of pitchers have overcome being his height and been successful. His only injury thus far has been an appendectomy so hopefully his arm handles the uptick in velocity. Since his outpitch is the change, that is presumably easier on the arm than a LHP that relies on a sweeping slider.

He seems exteremely polished for a 19 year old.

Whew, glad I missed the millionth Hughes argument on this blog… Hughes is really really good and has basically been the team’s #2 starter since Andy went down. But who cares? Today is all about CC, what a beast.

I’m on cloud nine right now. I had great seats to see CC mow down the A’s and Granderson mash a couple homers. Then I went back to jersey and went to Giant stadium for their game. They did a great job on that stadium, it’s really nice. I’m not a Giants fan but that is a nice place to see a game. Although to be fair, I was with some rich friends so I got to sit in a luxury box and got a tour of the other boxes. Man I wish I worked for a rich company… maybe someday :)

  115. tyanksfan36 September 2nd, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Banuelos has good stuff, it sucks that he hasn’t won a game but his ERA is great. I said when he got promoted that I hoped he got more run support and it still seems to elude him. I got his and Betances autographs while they were still in Tampa. Hopefully either of them makes it to the majors so they will be more meaningful, not that they aren’t already.
I like to see Betances pitch. He always seems really confident on the mound, maybe because of his size but I always enjoyed watching him.

Considering the Yankees moved all three B’s to Trenton late in the season by mid season they should be in Scranton, health permitting and available to NY by season end. What could the Yankees trade for of equal value that they needed? It’s similar to Nova. If he continues at this level to the end of the year, what do you trade a cost controlled pitcher of his ability for? The only thing that comes to mind would be a Gardner/Nova + package for someone like Kemp.

The interesting part of that game is that Gardenhrie used TWO of his starters in extra innings (Dunsing and Blackburn) and Leyland used his closer for 3 innings. I assume they ran out of pitchers. Isn’t the point of September call-ups to prevent that from happening?

Looks like I’m going to have to go to a lot more Trenton games next season, especially early. Maybe find myself a couple of early-early start games (11 or noon) and go by myself. :)

Hey, GB7 – if you’re awake – Justin Christian has been productive the last couple of games. Happy for him, even if he’s one of those guys we talked about who probably won’t get to the majors for good.

Banuelos must have done a very good job; our Star Ledger almost never talks about what the pitchers do, unless they pitch a shutout. Today it said “Manuel Banuelos and three relievers combined to allow just six hits, striking out 12 and walking three. Ryan Pope pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save.”

Now, I don’t know if it was Banuelos and three plus Pope; I don’t know how many of the K’s, BB’s or hits were Banuelos’ either. But I guess they’re working with space constraints. Between the offense and the pitching, they got 2 paragraphs today instead of the usual one. :)

The biggest difference so far is not feeling tied to my laptap for a good part of the afternoon. But it does feel kind of strange – like the lineup is no big deal all of a sudden after being something people consciously thought about for months. :)

I’ve been compiling all the “winning” lineups, participants and winners into one file. Don’t know why I’m doing that. Guess it’s harder to let go than I thought it’d be.

    Good morning ladies.

At least after a CC win there will be less to complain about.

  149. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 7:40 am

Doreen, banuelos would have been fine except for Snyder;s 2 out, 2 run throwing error in the 4th. Banuelos did hurt himself with a walk a hit and a wild pitch, but still should have been out of the inning without any runs scored. 4.2 innings, 5 hits (all singles, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Still he did what he always does, got strikeouts and ground balls. 6 ground outs and 2 fly outs. Not bade for a kid that should be a college freshman and playing against guys 3-4 years older. He was hitting 94-95 MPH and a killer change-up last night.

I’ve always liked Christian. Every once in a while he’ll hit a homer, but, he can run like the wind. Almost as fast as Gardner. Also a good outfielder at all 3 spots and could fill in at 2nd.

Here’s the box and an inning by inning breakdown. I’m too lazy to type it all in.

Just imagine what Veck would do with a pitcher like Venditte.

  160. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 7:55 am

    You’re very welcome Kate

venditte only pitched left handed last night

  161. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:04 am

Speaking of Veeck, have you ever seen videos of the night that “Martians” landed in Comisky Park and kidnapped Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio? Or the beer case stacking contest he had? Funny stuff, but, nothing beat his “Be The Manager Night”. One section of the stands were given big cards that said “Yes” or “No”. One guy was picked to decide on steals, hit and run, pull the pitcher and other decisions. He held up the card with the decision and the fans voted. The real manager sat in a rocking chair in the stands, reading the paper.

  162. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:07 am

    Maine,

I fell asleep last night but thats a funny story about the Taxi….I wouldn’t feel very good when Lackey pitched either if I were them.

The most interesting thing regarding the Sox this offseason may be what they do with Papelbon…I think they would love to trade him and make Bard the closer to get out from under his salary but I’m not sure finding a taker will be easy and honestly even though he’s struggled this season, losing him would diminish their already shaky bullpen even farther.

  163. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:08 am

All these day games are really messing up my schedule by the way….the Yankees should really be more considerate to my schedule :)

It should be interesting to see what the Sox can get for Mr. Riverdance. Him + Pillsbury for a catcher ?

  168. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:21 am

    MTU,

I’d say the Sox will go hard after Buck. I don’t know what team would be willing to take on a shaky closer with Papelbon’s salary I’m sure the Sox will try and push him on somebody since Theo is a savant and can Jedi mind trick teams in to doing things they really don’t want to do.

  169. Doreen September 3rd, 2010 at 8:23 am

    Thanks, GB7.

Maybe Christian could get a chance elsewhere as part of a trade package? Seems like he’d be a good 4th/5th outfielder for someone.

    MTU -

I sleep, I just get up really early. Most days I wait for someone else (upstate kate or blake) to post first. ‘Cause they post at more decent morning hours. :)

Dont see the Sox trading with the Yanks. Interesting thought though

  173. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:29 am

“Would you trade Montero for Lester ? :)

That’s a tough one. Would be very tempted to because Lester is already a front line big league pitcher at 26. I wouldn’t trade 2 bat boys and an L screen for Beckett though.

  174. Doreen September 3rd, 2010 at 8:29 am

I think there will be takers for Papelbon. He seems a little shaky because he’d been so tough for a long time, in my opinion. He’s not a lock this season. Some team or teams will think he’ll be fine going forward. The Mets would love him. But the Mets don’t have anything to trade (unless they’re trading big names – Wright?) and who knows if they have money.

  177. Joe from Long Island September 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 am

    Good morning all –

My guess about the Sox – just playing armchair GM – they sign Vmart for 1B, move Youk to 3B, sign Werth for LF, and look for an everyday C – Buck, Barajas, Bengie Molina, whomever signs first. Say goodbye to Beltre, because he’s a Boras client and wants a 3+ year deal. Ortiz – no idea how that plays out. Besides the baseball issues, there’s the ego stuff on both sides, and the Sox probably don’t want to pay what his $11M option to DH when the going rate for DH is half that.

That still leaves them with their pitching problems.

Glad I don’t have to figure that out for real, :)

  178. Joe from Long Island September 3rd, 2010 at 8:32 am

Doreen – they Mets are stuck with KRod. And, because of their own financial problems, I really don’t think they’re going to be taking on big salaries. From what I’m hearing, they’re going to look to drop another $20M in payroll.

  179. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 8:34 am

    Doreen-

I couldn’t even stay up to Midnight on New Years eve.

Way back when. Before the age of the Dinosaurs I used to be a world class sleeper. How things change. :)

  180. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:34 am

    Doreen,

The Mets are also obligated to KRod unless they can get out from under his contract. Can’t see even them committing that kind of cash to two closers. There will be some takers most likely but I don’t think it will be as easy to move him as it may seem. Another thing to consider is that if they trade him they are trading their 2nd best reliever…regardless of how he performed this season.

  181. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:35 am

Sure thing, Doreen. Christian signed with Baltimore a couple of years ago, but, hurt his arm, had surgery and resigned with the Yanks. Always thought he’d be the perfect 4th outfielder for NYY.

There was a discussion about music the other night and Willie Nelson was brought up. Youtube has some great stuff including duets with Dyan Cannon and Amy Irving. Great music.

  185. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:40 am

    Joe,

I think that would be a good strategy for them….assuming Youkalis can still play adequately at 3B. Beltre on a long term deal would scare me to death and I think Boston will shy away from that risk. Vmart can probably be had cheaper and on a shorter term deal. Ortiz will probably be back if I had to guess on a 2 year deal.

    Joe from L.I. :

Boston has their hands full this winter. Papelbon is their only real trading chip and their farm system has little to offer unless Gammons is to be believed. They have serious decisions to make.
If Toronto does the right things, they could be the 3rd place team in 2011.

GB, I read your memories of watching the series on TV. I grew up in a small Central Florida town. My teachers didn’t’ let us watch the games, but we would watch the astronauts rockets be shot off on TV and then run outside to watch it climb. Now, that is a good memory.

  193. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 8:50 am

If Boston re-signs Vmart and Ortiz, signs Werth and a catcher like Buck then they could be pretty good next year if they have better luck with health.

Beckett isn’t what he used to be but he’s better than he’s been this season and Lackey can be a descent back end (well paid) starter. Their bullpen is going to be an issue without some major overhauls but otherwise they could field a pretty descent team if certain moves are made.

They could trade Ellsbury or Papelbon but in both cases their value is down and they would have to replace them if traded….

  194. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 8:51 am

  201. Doreen September 3rd, 2010 at 9:02 am

Aha, I thought the Mets were going to get out of KRod’s contract. But I suppose that’s not going to happen, is it?

    GB7 -

I feel like for some of those minor league guys, timing is everything. You miss your one shot, someone younger and maybe just a little better (or just younger) comes along, and you probably don’t get another solid shot.

  202. 86w183 September 3rd, 2010 at 9:02 am

I don’t much care what the Sawx do in the off-season. Much more interested in what happens with Mariano, Derek, Andy and Javy. After that, what do they do with Thames, Kearns and Wood?

Boston will look a lot different. There’s no question about that. And they’ll be very good. Good enough to make up the eight games? doubtful.

  203. JM September 3rd, 2010 at 9:04 am

Ahh yes, how could I forget the Cubs? The loveable losers that they are.

The thing about the Cubs is their attendance is usually great at Wrigley because so many people just go there for the experience and don’t seem to care about what’s going on on the field.

Not that there aren’t a lot of die-hard Cubbies fans. My old pet-sitter in Chicago was one. But even he had given up on being optimistic that the Cubbies would ever win a Series in his lifetime.

Space launches used to be events. Now they’re ho-hum. And yet they’re still as risky as they ever were.

  209. Joe from Long Island September 3rd, 2010 at 9:11 am

I agree – Boston and Toronto could wind up in a fight for 3rd-4th place next year. In fact, Toronto could have the better pitching. I think Tampa has run it’s course for now – losing CC, Pena, Soriano will have an effect. Don’t know how they’ll replace all that.

The good thing about the Yanks playing this afternoon is that I’ve got dinner plans for tonight. Besides, with the weather, it might be worse in the Bronx tonight.

  210. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 9:12 am

I’ve often wondered if Wrigley Field doesn’t actually work against the Cubs in a way. Their ownership has no pressure to win because they sellout regardless. They do spend a lot of money though in payroll but it hasn’t been spent very wisely over the years for the most part.

Jeter and Rivera will be back…I think Wood and Kearns will largely depend on offers they get from other teams. I’d love to see both back next year but I think there is a good chance they get offered better roles by other teams this winter…they may not care though and want to remain on a winner.

    MTU,

Totally agree. The Rays may not be as good as this year next season but its possible that they could have an even stronger rotation. They could actually shop Davis this offseason and replace him with Hellickson and not skip a beat. They should be good for the near future. That organization is ran remarkably well.

  214. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 9:23 am

The AL East as a whole is set to be unbelievable for several years. The Jays have great young pitching and the Orioles have talent as well….just haven’t put it together yet. They could though in the next couple years. Its funny really…Boston would be a game back in the AL central and leading the West right now.

  219. blake September 3rd, 2010 at 9:28 am

    JM,

They spend money, they have the 3rd highest payroll this season (14 million more than the Mets)…its just when they make mistakes on players they just have no incentive to correct them it seems to me. They have made numerous bad signings in recent years and just seem content to ride them out. They sell out, they make money….that’s the difference in the Yankees and a lot of other teams. That need to win.

There’s a funny story about space launches and baseball.

Back in the mid -60s, Gaylord Perry was pitching for the Giants and he was a notoriously bad hitter. Giants were out of pinch hitters and Perry was bugging Herman Franks to let him hit. Franks said that they needed a home run and Perry said he could deliver. Franks started laughing and told Perry that they’d land a man on the moon before he ever hit a home run. On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. 2 hours later, Perry hit his first ML home run.

New Post: So far so good at Yankee Stadium

  222. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 9:34 am

The problem the Red Sox face is, while they have a lot of money coming off the books, there isn’t a deep FA pool this off-season.

They aren’t getting Lee or Crawford.

Werth? Good player. Not a difference maker. Paying him difference maker money, which they will have to do to get him, isn’t going to make him a better player.

Beltre has great seasons in walk years. He’s going to want a ton of money, and probably will get it, this off-season from somebody. Not sure if that somebody is the Red Sox.

Martinez? He’s playing hardball and is not going to sign a below market deal to stay in Boston.

Probably because he knows he can get what he wants from the White Sox.

As others have said, the key to their off-season is what they can get for trading Papelbon.

Historically, those deals don’t reap huge awards.

If their farm system was as good as their hype, their problems would be lessened.

However, it isn’t and that is a problem for them.

  223. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 9:35 am

    GB-

    Now that’s an amazing story.

  224. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 9:38 am

I wonder if Boston makes a deal with the Mets to get Jason Bay, back. Not a spectacular player, but, he was good in Boston. That was a huge mistake to let him go.

  225. Mgumpher September 3rd, 2010 at 9:38 am

The East is going to be quite the battleground for a while to come. Baltimore has a good deal of talent, though their pitching might still need some more time. The Rays have a lot of talent even if they lose Pena and Crawford they have some good pieces from the farm to help their club. Boston is usually tough, even this year they are tough to beat. Jays are hard to figure, they have pitching, but Cito is leaving after this season ends. Not sure if that impact them.

I think the whole AL East is going to be dreaded by the rest of the league.

  226. Bronx Jeers September 3rd, 2010 at 9:43 am
