Still no lineup from the Yankees, but Joe Girardi just announced that Derek Jeter will have a routine day off. Ramiro Pena will start at shortstop, Eduardo Nunez at third.
Girardi has yet to post a full lineup because he has not checked with Nick Swisher to find out whether Swisher can play.
He needs it. I figured they would wait until alex was back in the lineup, so they didnt have pena and nunez both in the lineup. Please at least have Posada in the lineup, especially is Swish can’t play.
Seems like a good day to rest Jeter. 2 lefties coming up Saturday and Sunday and he’s got much better #s against LHP (and Rzcepsjfkajsf couldn’t get anyone out his last start vs. NYY) plus Morrow is a bad day for most hitters. Plus if the rain is a factor you don’t want Derek aggravating any leg issues sliding around on a slick field.
How about Cano? He never seems to get a day off and he looked very tired yesterday. Why not Pena at 2nd and Cano as DH?
GB – The Sox had concerns about Bay’s last physical with them. Theo would have to change course on that one. Not sayng it’s impossible, just that it would be an about face and I don’t know if the Sox like to do that in public. Goes against their image of true genius. Gammons would have to admit they made a mistake the first time.
I really don’t know who would take Beltran, even at a discounted salary. He wears a brace, and has had difficulty in the field since coming back. His hitting has been atrocious. Not an attractive player at this point in his career. Can he get it back? Of course. But, even if the Mets offered a 50% discount, who would take that much risk?
Maybe I’m missing something here but could someone enlighten me on this B12 stuff with Nova. As far as I knew B12 injections weren’t illegal…are they?, and were fairly commonplace…I guess what I’m asking is….what’s the big deal? I’m not getting it.
Smart move to rest Jeter and I don’t see Nunez as a no-stick guy at the plate.
He’s shown he can hit in his short time here.
The kid has tools and he’s showing he has the ability to help this team. Perhaps even in the post-season.
Wouldn’t shock me if he ends up on the post-season roster.
MLB is looking into Nova/Wilkins De La Rosa because someone informed them that those two were injecting each other with B12 in Trenton last year.
B12 is not on the banned substance list, but I think the problem is that they may have been injecting each other, one, and two they may have done it in the clubhouse which is probably not allowed in some form.
It doesn’t seem like something they could hammer Nova on this year, and even if they did try to suspend him he would most certainly appeal and drag it out through the end of the season.
Blake,
Only medical personnel are allowed to inject players. Players are not allowed to inject one another with anything.
The issue is more about whether the players injected one another than what they injected into one another.
One thing I don’t like about Nunez is he is frequently up there hacking very early in the count. He seems to understand the strike zone to some degree but he is a little overaggressive, I think, in terms of not getting the ideal pitch to hit.
But he has a good ability to make contact, I just think he may have a little early-career Cano in him where he can’t wait for the ideal pitch to put a swing on. But I have been impressed with him thus far, he could definitely start full-time at SS for a lesser team than the Yankees, and in NY he is definitely a good backup IF option.
Jesus. Is somebody going to report this B-12 BS 3-4 times a day every day until they retire?
Depending on what the strength of the B-12 is as to whether a prescription is needed or not and whether the injection has to be done by a doctor/licensed nurse or not.
Ledger_Yankees ARod just got done taking grounders at third base.
Nunez can hit, but I put a question mark next to his fielding. Pena will be needed in the post-season roster because of his glove, so Nunez’ fate will likely be decided by whether the Yanks decide to carry 11 or 12 pitchers. I think Nunez is 14th on the non-pitcher depth chart.
Ledger_Yankees ARod now in the cage hitting. Girardi still believes Sunday is the day.
If the team the Yankees face have some tough LHPs, Nunez could make the roster over Pena.
Tmw could be Robbies day off.
Nunez at SS and Nino at 2b
^ in the postseason.
Good move to get Jeter as much rest as possible. Id give Swisher the day off too. Better be safe than sorry.
I wouldnt want a guy with a broken foot – while thinking he’s invincible – taking grounders, only to have the same recurring foot injury one game off the DL. HAHAHAHA How arrogant!
Good move to give Jeter a day off. Ideally, Jeter would take several days off, but he is not wired that way. Add A-Rod and a normal Jeter to this lineup and you have a true juggernaut from top to bottom.
Actually, if Jeter has a nagging injury, I would sit him for a week as soon as A-Rod is healthy, whether he wants the time off or not.
Jeter should sit for a week, but unfortunately, he only knows one way – and that’s not sitting for a week unless he absolutely has to (DL).
Rich-
Maybe, but I don’t buy it. Girardi will want a slick fielding backup infielder over a good hitting back-up infielder in the playoffs. I don’t think he’ll care about platoon differential in the infield backup spot.
SJ, Andrew,
Thanks I didn’t know that detail. That makes more sense then…
YankeesWFAN ARod launching balls in BP now. Running out of the box too. Laughing, looks good.
My guess is that as soon as the Yankees get closer to clinching the division, Jeter will get a block of time off
There’s been nothing wrong with Nunez’ fielding. He’s made every play but one and most of his games are at 3rd base.
Alex always looks good! Oh, YankeesWFAN wasnt referring to that, oops! That picture of CC yesterday yawning – he looks so hot, so delicious!
poor nova.
nunez, pena, golson…
cant wait to see what the lineup looks like today. Watch them still put up 15 runs.
My dad just called me and said “Guess where I am”.
He decided to go to the beach and check out the waves as the storm is coming.
He said it completely amazing there
Look few if any people know for certain what’s in any injection they receive. Baseball players, like the rest of us need to rely on medical professionals rather than each other.
Remember Clemen’s is claiming that’s all he approved to be injected into him.
Pena is the more reliable glove and may always be, but Nunez is already better with the stick and has outstanding potential in that regard.
Haha, Nova always gets stuck with the C lineups. I’m not complaining, the guys need rest, but it’s kinda sad for the rookie.

Funny story about Perry and the moon shot.
Jeter could use a day. Better would be sitting him the day before an off-day.
WYH
They get by with Jeter’s defense at SS. That should argue in favor of another good hitting, less than great fielding SS as having value.
GB7-
Pena is clearly a better fielder than Nunez at this point, particularly at SS but also at 3rd. The only time the back-up infielder will play in the post-seson is if ARod, Jeter or Cano get hurt, and if that happens Joe will want the best fielder. He’ll trust Pena but and not Nunez as demonstrated by who has been the back-up infielder all year. Case closed.
I don’t think Nova cares who’s playing behind him, he’s just elated to be here.

I doubt he did, but I will let you know!
Why isn’t Nunez at SS, his natural position?
Berkman should DH today.
Will sette for 2 of 3 from the Jays. The schedule quirk saw the Yankees with too many games in a short space of time with one more series yet to play in Toronto on September 27-29.
Is it consensus that Pena is much better at SS than Nunez? I think I recall Nunez having some error problems in the minors. Can’t really judge him from 3B since he’s hardly played that position before.
Pena is no longer “clearly” better defensively than Nunez and can’t match him with the bat or on the bases. Pena might be slightly better defensively, but, not enough to make up for an inferior bat. He strikes out to much.
YankeesWFAN ARod will bat against Pettitte in simulated game tomorrow. ARod sounds cautious but says Sunday is definitely a “possibility.”
Ledger_Yankees ARod says he and Boras “had a good run.” But “Some of things I needed 20 years ago I don’t need now.”
The International League has him listed as the best defensive shortstop in the league along with the best shortstop arm. I’ll stick with the “inferior glove” and superior bat and legs.
New Post: A-Rod vs. Pettitte
GB7-
I can’t agree, let’s see who the Yanks take.
When Pena entered the game yesterday at 3B why didn’t Girardi move Nunez to SS and give Jeter a blow on a hot day ? Now he gets today off possiibly due to his recent slump at the plate.
