That makes more sense since Pena has more experience at 3B.

  2. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:22 am

I think Cano will get a breather tomorrow, but I sort of expect to see Girardi keep the foot on the pedal for the next 6 home games for the most part.

Tampa hits the road today for 9 straight on the road, including 3 in Boston as the Yanks finish up with Baltimore.

This next 6 games is perhaps an opportunity to get a couple games of separation if things go well.

I was thinking the same thing. But I think it’s possible he plays tomorrow and gets Sunday off -especially if Alex does end up coming back on Sunday.

A lineup like today’s, with an ailing Swish and A-Rod and Jeter having an off day, is where having Berkman really helps to add depth.

  6. CR9 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:24 am

I guess that line by Alex about no longer needing from Boras what he needed 20 years ago was referring to guidance – as he realizes that Boras is a scumpile who never cared about the direction Alex headed, but rather how much dough he lined his own pockets with.

  7. jacksquat September 3rd, 2010 at 11:25 am

Hmm, not sure why Pena would hit ahead of Nunez when Nunez’ bat is clearly better.

  8. jackamir September 3rd, 2010 at 11:26 am

Not even Girardi could have GTLU. It’s time to squeak out a one run game. If they put Cervelli in today I’d have to pray for rain. Somebody will come up big and I am guessing Berkman will be my pick to click.

    —————–

Just guessing here but maybe Girardi is going with a Tony LaRussa type thinking here in that you treat your number 9 hitter as kind of a 2nd leadoff man. Nunez has been hitting pretty well so maybe you bank on him getting on once or twice for the top of the order.

And in fairness, Pena has come up with some really clutch hits this year and has looked better at the plate recently. He’s never going to tear it up but if he hits .220 with clutch hits and solid D he is doing more than this part.

It’s unfortunate Mark Teixeira is so clueless… at least according to you.

    ——————-

I don’t think that is true at all. I think Boras does care about Alex as they have been together for such a long time. The job of Boras is to get his client as much money as possible (and also get himself as much money as possible). He did that. He got him the largest contract in baseball history. Twice. I think SJ put it best when he said that sometimes it is just best for both parties to move on. They probably just are going in different directions at this point. But to say Boras doesn’t care about A-rod is absolutely false..

There was a stretch (I want to say late June/July) where I thought it wasn’t too bad-but much like AJ Burnett, I didn’t have a win in all of August. :(

    ************

Awwww…. very sad for all involved that you and AJ have that in common

The problem was that you never knew who was batting first or second. Then there were a ton of day-to-day guys. No DH and you had to guess 7-9.

How can we work under those conditions?

  18. upstate kate September 3rd, 2010 at 11:37 am

Girardi must not have gotten the message that GTLU was over…he was trying to throw us off by saying Pena would be at SS, and then reversing it!

  19. Erin September 3rd, 2010 at 11:38 am

JackCurryYES ARod confirmed that he has split with Scott Boras. Said they had “a long run.”

  20. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:38 am

As far as Nunez vs. Pena for the post-season roster, I believe Pena is a lock for the post-season roster.

Where I see the possibility of Nunez making the post-season roster is in the PR/Freddie Guzman role.

IMO, he would be a better choice than Golston in that role because he is a better hitter than Golston.

By the way, if anyone cares, I live very close to the ocean and went down to check it out today and it is quite wild. Will only get worse as the day goes on.

Unfortunately we have had two drownings in the area over the past four days. I expect more if people try to go in the next couple of days. Way too rough, even for experienced swimmers.

  22. CR9 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:40 am

“But to say Boras doesn’t care about A-rod is absolutely false..” In your opinion, Tyler.

    Tyler

Where was Boras’ care and guidance when the highest paid player in baseball history made the terrible decision of Ortiz’ing in years 2001-2003? Where was he when Alex – under his guidance – opted out of a contract in the middle of a World Series? Where was he when Alex was being stalked by Selena Roberts and why wasn’t the baseball union – the largest union in the world – brought into his defense as Michael Weiner was brought in for Ortiz?

    ———————

Boras made a mistake in advising Arod to opt out during the World Series. There is no doubt about that. It did not work out any where near how he thought it would and created great public backlash. Still, he got him a contract even bigger than his last one which is pretty amazing ( and dumb on Hanks part). It wasn’t Boras’ job to baby sit Arod. The steroids were Arods choice. We don’t know if Boras advised him not to do them. That’s not public knowledge. What we do know is that Arod is a big enough boy to make his own choices and he paid and will pay deeply for it in terms of legacy likely. He also had nothing to do with the Roberts mess. I don’t know why the Union didn’t back Arod like they did Ortiz. Maybe it has to do with public perception, maybe people just don’t like/are jealous of Arod and the Yankees. I can’t answer that. What I do know is that Boras cared about Arod. Heck Arod lined his pockets full of money like no other player ever will. They had a WORKING relationship since Arod was in high school. It was just time to move on…

The ocean just before a Hurricane is an amazing thing to watch.

We rented a house on the beach for a week one year and a hurricane was coming. There was no sun and it was chilly but I sat on the beach in sweats for hours and just watched the water.

SJ, with respect to your “if I had told you” post from an earlier thread, of course if someone had predicted all of those eventualities I still would have believed we’d be where we are because the Yankees always find a way!

However, the one about Jeter having his worst year this year I posted multiple times, beginning with last year’s offseason. Nobody ever picked up on it, not once, either because they didn’t want to go near it or because they had no respect for New York astrologers!!! :)

I think if anyone could find it it would be interesting to go and see what else they predicted about this season (I don’t remember). I just remember – and posted it, again, on numerous occasions – that one of them published that this would be Jeter’s worst year ever. I was thinking it might be because he would be out with injuries or something. See, I do pay attention to that stuff, especially because they hit it dead on about the Yanks first year in the new Stadium.

Oh yeah – here’s the good news. If this year is his worst season ever, we have better things to look forward to next season, etc. So instead of looking at it like Jeter’s on some precipitous decline, something I’ve read so many times here, look at it as Jeter had an off year! Period!

  32. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:49 am

An agent’s job isn’t to baby sit his client.

It’s to take care of his business, which Scott Boras did brilliantly (whether you like his methods or not) for nearly 20 years.

Alex is responsible for taking PED’s, not Scott Boras.

As far as the book is concerned, if Scott tried to stop that book, he would have done more damage than the book did to Alex’s career.

The book bombed, Selena Roberts is a non-entity in sports, and Alex enjoys a career and personal renaissance today.

The book forced Alex to grow up and make better decisions in his life.

To that end, one could argue the book is the best thing that ever happened to Alex.

Sometimes, like personal relationships, business relationships just run their course.

Such is the case with Alex and Scott.

I am very excited. I have figured out how to put my excel worksheet on the GTLU web page. So if I do this next year, people will be able to look and see that their lineups were entered correctly.

There were a couple of stretches of time when people were guessing pretty well. But August was a lost month, pretty much.

  38. CR9 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:53 am

    Tyler

First, as SJ44 said yesterday, Boras didnt get Alex his 2007 offseason contract. But, for the sake of argument, let’s just say Boras did. Alex and Boras had a GREAT WORKING relationship.

But when you, Scott Boras, have the highest paid athlete in the world, it ought to become more than just a working relationship – a mentor-mentee relationship, if you will. You, Scott Boras, make absolutely certain that the highest paid player in history doesn’t make the stupid decision of steroid use.

And as the best agent in baseball, you make absolutely certain that Alex has the proper defense when the steroid allegations arose. The baseball union is the largest in the world – there was no reason why Alex shouldn’t have had someone in his corner.

Thankfully for Alex and the Yankees, his admittance turned into a complete turnaround of his persona and a World Series.

Alex has already signed his final professional contract. What more does Scott Boras need to do for him? I don’t see their split as a big deal.

  42. CR9 September 3rd, 2010 at 11:59 am

    SJ44

I respect your opinions and personal knowledge. However, I disagree with one fundamental concept.

“An agent’s job isn’t to baby sit his client.”

When you have the highest paid athlete in history, you do baby-sit your client – in a sense.

Regarding Alex’s personal and career renaissance: Everything worked out for the best. Thankfully. And as much as I like to cry “bad luck” among other things, that was the BEST possible luck that Alex and the Yankees could have received.

  43. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Scott Boras cannot make ANY client not take PED’s.

If agents only had that kind of power!

As far as his “defense”, Alex is a grown man and he, not Scott, makes decisions in his life.

To that end, Alex takes responsibility for his own decisions, good AND bad, in his life.

It’s called being an adult which Alex has finally become, with great results, in recent years.

Scott Boras isn’t to blame for Alex’s foibles. Alex is to blame for Alex’s foibles.

  44. pat September 3rd, 2010 at 12:00 pm

    CR9

Alex didn’t ask the union to get involved and at the time the outings seemed aimed only at him so there was no reason for their involvement.

They got involved when it seemed that a pattern of name leaking was developing.

I am reading a great book about the Providence Grays called: Fifty-Nine in ’84

“In 1884, Providence Grays pitcher Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn won an astounding fifty-nine games—more than anyone in major-league history ever had before, or has since. He then went on to win all three games of baseball’s first World Series. ”
