Swisher remains day-to-day

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 03, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

ph_430897Nick Swisher said he was available to pinch hit this afternoon, but his stiff left knee is still keeping him from moving 100 percent.

“I want to be able to run full speed,” he said. “Even if I can get it up there to 80 or 90 (percent), I’ll be happy with that.”

Joe Girardi waited to speak with Swisher before posting today lineup, and Swisher said he’s hopeful the full day off — and a full day of treatment — will make a difference. “As long as the wins keep coming, you’re able to relax a little more,” he said.

As for tomorrow, it seems possible Swisher will be back in the lineup. Facing a lefty, though — and given Brett Gardner’s and Curtis Granderson’s success — the Yankees could give Austin Kearns another start in right.

“He told me he felt better today,” Girardi said. “We just gave him a day and we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

    Not good. :(

Swisher should take his time, though. Would hate to have a setback.

    OUCH!

“So I’m settling into my seat on a VERY inexpensive Jetblue flight to Chicago to see the Mets in Wrigley when I notice the flight attendant having a hard time closing the overhead compartment because of someone’s bag. After she sheepishly looks around for the culprit?he identifies himself. Since everyone was already seated and ready to fly, the apparently inconsiderate passenger was on stage for all to see. It was none other than Omar Minaya himself. What I didn’t say before is that this flight is CRAWLING with Mets fans making the pligramage to Wrigely. At once the plane is abuzz. One young man in 18A shouts out “I woulda traded frenchy three months ago” another says “Better live it up, this is probably your last flight to chicago as GM”. Delighted by the impromptu celebrity roast I chimed in with “I bet they flew Mike Jacobs in business class, at least”. We all laughed in unison?he sat down and put his headphones on, a defeated man.”

Since others are producing, I say let Swisher rest. Kearns has gone cold, though…

Jeter should rest again, too, but so should Robbie. Decision, decisions….

  4. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 5:58 pm

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Teixeira
    Posada
    Kearns
    Nunez
    Cervilli
    Pena
    Gardner

Is my guess. Unless the want to give Berkman a go from the right side and catch Posada.

  5. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:00 pm

And we could be just two more days away from:

    Jeter
    Swisher
    Teixeira
    Rodriquez
    Cano
    Posada
    Berkman
    Granderson
    Gardner

And before anyone says it. Any line-up that boasts Derek Jeter as its least productive hitter is in pretty damn good shape.

  6. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:02 pm

    Compliments of MLB-Rumors-R-Us.

The Rangers agreed to sign Mark Prior to a minor league deal, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (on Twitter). A Rangers official told Wilson that the Rangers signed Prior with the long-term in mind, not necessarily 2010. The right-hander doesn’t turn 30 until next week, so he’s still relatively young.

Prior, who had signed with the Orange County Flyers of the Independent Golden League, auditioned for teams earlier in the summer, but no one signed him. The Padres signed Prior last year, though he never pitched for San Diego at the major league level.

The Cubs selected Prior second overall in the 2001 draft and he pitched to a 2.43 ERA in 200-plus innings as a 22-year-old two years later. Soon afterwards, shoulder injuries derailed Prior’s career

  7. Melk Man September 3rd, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Looks good, stuckey. Just flip flop Gardner-Jeter in your proposed lineup. Don’t see how a guy with a .320 OBP should leadoff… also, I don’t see how he can get more than 3/$45…

  8. hardwired7 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Nunez beating out that routine ground ball to short was pretty damn impressive.

the only way you reach base from the right-handed batter’s box on that is w/both great speed and hustle. IMO, he’s a rung higher on the ladder than Ramiro now, and moving steadily higher.

  9. m September 3rd, 2010 at 6:04 pm

If you’ve had shoulder issues, aren’t Nolan Ryan and the Rangers the last people you want a call from?

  10. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Rest Cano and play Pena at SS tomorrow.

Put Jeter back in the lineup and have Nunez at third.

One more day of Kearns in RF isn’t going to hurt.

Play both Gardner and Granderson tomorrow.

    GB,

    My darkhorse candidate? Bobby Valentine.

    Cash LOVES Bobby V.

JMO but, if Girardi left, I think it would be between Pena and Valentine.

That is of course, if Bobby has not already taken the Mariners job by that time.

    Wow.

I’d still be shocked if the Yanks hired Bobby V. He is not the straight laced, button up type.

The manager interviews sure could be more interesting.

  13. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:09 pm

“Looks good, stuckey. Just flip flop Gardner-Jeter in your proposed lineup. Don’t see how a guy with a .320 OBP should leadoff…”

Wasn’t making an argument for what should be the line-up Melk, but what will be the line-up.

    It’s .332 btw, not .320.

Jeter isn’t being moved into the bottom of the order. You can make all the arguments you want, but it just will not happen.

I’ll do better than that. I’ll gave you a reason why.

Girardi does it now, and it becomes THE story for the rest of the year. It WILL become a media distraction. I’ll dominate every pre and postgame interview, and then start up again in the postseason.

Girardi isn’t going to do that with 27 to play and Tampa just a game back.

And it isn’t like they haven’t won 6 in a row BEFORE today either.

  14. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:11 pm

An interesting breakdown on Teixeira’s swing from the left side since April (From MLB-TV Harold Reynolds). He says that Teixeira’s left handed swing now matches his right side. One other change is that both hands are staying on the bat throughout the swings.

  15. pat September 3rd, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Why not just rest an additional starter everyday until they lose. Thames would need to play 3B though.

There could be no complaints of a weak bench if Derek, Robbie, Swish and Alex are on it.

  16. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:12 pm

Damn, Long’s pricetag may just gone up some more.

  17. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 6:13 pm

    Oh hell, forgot about Thames.

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Teixeira
    Posada
    Thames
    Kearns
    Nunez
    Pena
    Gardner

  35. Tabbert September 3rd, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I don’t understand ” experts” reasoning for the rays being more dangerous. They say the rays have better ptiching.. okay, well we have a much better offense. Then they say the rays are younger.. how can one put any stock in a team being better because its younger? If anything, that means there are much more unknowns. I love how whenever someone is asked who is the team to beat the answer is ALWAYS the champs are the team to beat until proven otherwise. However, that belief never seems to fall upon the yankees. In the nba, experts still claim the lakers are the team to beat even with the heat being loaded like crazy. Anyways, I really cant wait to sport this lineup come october

    Jeter
    Swish
    Tex
    arod
    cano
    Berkman/Thames
    posada
    Granderson
    Gardner

This team is a monster built for the playoffs. I don’t care who is pitching against us because their are so many guys in our lineup that can single handily change the entire complexion of a ball game. I honestly believe Grandy and berkman are going to make some big time noise in the playoffs.

@Doreen: Yes, in recent years ESPN radio has had all the postseason games, with Miller/Morgan handling one of the two LCS series and the WS. Whole seperate broadcast contract.

Actually, let me take a step back, I don’t know if ESPN radio has all the postseason games, it’s possible that the early series are split between broadcasters. But I recall hearing some ‘the exclusive voice of postseason baseball’ promos in the past.

Basically, if it comes down to the Yanks and Reds and you’re dying for some Miller/Morgan to offset Buck/McCarver, ESPN radio is the place to go.

  75. CB September 3rd, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Montero is really unbelievable. 20 HR for the season. Who would have thought that possible 3 months ago?

    He just doubled as well.

He’s had a 1.030+ OPS over his last 250 odd at bats. That’s the highest in the International League over that time period. And he’s 20. AAA is filled with older guys with major league experience, like Shelly Duncan, who can mash.

When you look at how poorly Cliff Lee has pitched….

The best trades are often the ones you don’t make, even if you need an assist from the jack z. to make sure it doesn’t get done.

Montero has one of the single best bats a minor leaguer has had over the past decade.

  76. Eric UWS September 3rd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

  78. pat September 3rd, 2010 at 7:54 pm

“When you look at how poorly Cliff Lee has pitched?. ”

Funny you should write that. Donnie Collins asked the question earlier tonight:

swbyankeesTT Who would you rather have right now in your organization? Cliff Lee or Jesus Montero?

  79. Tom in N.J. September 3rd, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Have the Yankees ever had a prospect like Montero?

  80. CB September 3rd, 2010 at 7:55 pm

I don’t know if I’ve ever enjoyed being a yankee fan more than now.

It’s not even how great the big league club is. On top of that you get to enjoy the tremendous depth and richness of talent they have in the minor leagues.

It’s just great. There’s no two ways about it. It makes it a very different experience being a fan than it was even during the 1990′s dynasty.

Just as the major league club looks like it might be aging and RH power becomes a concern, the Yanks have a kid who is major league ready with the stick who has a non-trivial chance to become a .950+ OPS player.

  81. Eric UWS September 3rd, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Did you know that Andy Pettitte isn’t coming back this season? That’s what I heard on WEEI from probably their biggest loser of all “Mikey” Adams. You want to talk about a Yankee hating D-bag broadcaster. He was talking about the Sux catching the Rays for the Wild Card or cathing the Yankees for the division. He said the Rays are definitely the better team  and said it could actually happen that the Sux could catch the Yankees.

Here is what he said: “The only Yankee pitcher who is over .500 is CC Fat-bathia. Andy Pettitte isn’t coming back this season. AJ Burnett is a burnout. Take away Fat-bathia and all of their other pitchers are under .500. If something happens to him the (Sux) could possibly overtake the Yankees for the division lead. Here’s how it could happen. The Yankees have to play the Rays and the (Sux). I hate to say it but it would be the only time I would root for the Yankees because I think we have a better chance of taking the Wild Card.”

I used quotation marks despite the fact that some of the words might have been off only because I didn’t want you to think I was nicknaming CC “Fat-bathia”.

You want to talk a burnout moron you need to listen to this reject when he starts in on the Yankees. The guy is a total embarrassment anyway. A bloated talking head.

If I can find the theme to his talk show I will link to it. He even has wacked out music!

  88. Benny Blanco September 3rd, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Montero is tearing the cover of the ball. I certainly did think that he would’ve had 20HRS by now. I’m glad he’s in the yankees pipeline.

  89. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 3rd, 2010 at 8:09 pm

This is the music that the freak uses to open his show. Probably all you need to hear to know what you’re dealing with.

He’s the joke in the middle (there’s a pic there). Sometimes he dyes his hair blonde.

    Trisha,

Here’s a different way of looking at it.

If the Yankees are so bad, how bad must the Red Sox be to be 8 games behind such an awful team? lol

I bet Cash is in church every morning, a la the late, great Bob Sheppard, thanking his lucky stars Jesus Montero isn’t in Seattle right now.

Somebody was looking over Cash on that one! lol

  91. Tabbert September 3rd, 2010 at 8:14 pm

    doreen-

i was not around for the big red machine days… but it looks like they are doing their best to reenact it for me!

  92. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Laird is 1-2 and robbed of a double on a diving catch by the center fielder in the left center gap.

For those who like Man V Food or Joba Chamberlain-

Travel Channel is rerunning the Brooklyn episode in which Joba appears right now.

Scranton is a place where home runs go to die.

  95. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 3rd, 2010 at 8:16 pm

GB, seems he also forgot Phil Hughes, Javy Vasquez, and Dustin Moseley (though Moseley probably doesn’t count.) In fact, it seems that the only starter with a losing record is AJ.

I swear to you that I couldn’t overstate what a nasty, surly, smart-ass the guy is. He always has a cocky attitude, and as you can see, he talks out of his backside since he was totally wrong about the Y’s rotation and Andy coming back. But since he makes this stuff up on the fly to suit his pathetic wishes but does it with conviction, people buy the crap.

    He is just so creepy.

  96. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:19 pm

Betances thru 2 innings, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts. Trenton leads 13-0 in the 3rd inning. Rene Rivera has the only homer along with a double and 4 RBI.

  97. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 3rd, 2010 at 8:19 pm

SJ, I would love one of you guys to call into his show and put him in his place. He operates his little fiefdom from 6 to 10, nights.

Are you kidding me about the Sux being behind the Yankees? You know what he has to say about that? WITH ALL OF THEIR INJURIES, the (Sux) are ONLY 8 games behind, blah blah blah

  98. Nick in SF September 3rd, 2010 at 8:19 pm

The beauty of it is, we still have Jesus Montero, we are primed to win without Cliff Lee this year and sign him for next season if we so choose, and we can still hate Jate Z. for his perfidy while thanking him for his incompetence.

    That’s a win-win-win.

  99. Doreen September 3rd, 2010 at 8:20 pm

    Tabbert -

I was a young teenager at the time and a new baseball fan following the Mets. The Big Red Machine couldn’t be ignored. They were an amazing baseball “machine,” they really were. Exciting. Sounds like this year’s Reds are really firing people up. It’s great. It’s been a long time since Cincinnati had so much excitement during a baseball season.

  100. stuckey99 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Culver 3 for 3 at SI.

Still hitting just .189 during his cup of coffee there, but a strong finish would be nice.

    Betances a been-there-done-that 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2k night for Trenton so far.

  101. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Sounds like PA with a microphone

  102. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Think Betances is getting enough run support tonite.

    13 zip in the 3rd inning. :)

  103. Doreen September 3rd, 2010 at 8:23 pm

    SJ44 –

Oh, so true that someone was looking out for the Yankees back when he was talking to Seattle. I think I read that Cashman recently said he’s glad he didn’t have to trade Montero – I don’t remember his exact words.

If they never get Lee, it will still probably be a deal better not made.

  104. Bronx Jeers September 3rd, 2010 at 8:23 pm

    Ugh,

Trisha how could you unleash that slime on us. I feel violated… and somewhat distressed by the knowledge that I share the earth with one Mikey Adams.

    What happened to perspicacity?

  105. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 8:24 pm

    But can he catch ?

    Who cares. :) :) :)

“Sounds like PA with a microphone”

    Who is PA?

    Be back in a bit.

  107. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Mitchell is having trouble getting the pitches down after 2.1 great innings. now 6-3 after top of the 4th inning.

  108. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Trisha, sounds like Mikey adams is Pete a with a mic instead of a keyboard.

    Trisha,

There isn’t enough Sambuca in the world for me to drink to call into WEEI. lol

I get my kicks doing Patriots games wearing a Yankee hoodie.

To quote the “immortal” Larry Lucchino, I get a “two-fer” for that….

I get to tick off Boston fans AND Bill Belichick at the same time!

    Those are good times! lol

  113. pat September 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 pm

    Montero 2nd half .353/.401 /.667 / 1.06

    A-Rod 1995 in AAA .360 /.411 /.654 /1.065

    Scary similiar.

It’s amazing how little time Griffey Jr.spent in the minor leagues. Went from AA to the majors at 19 years old.

  114. SJ44 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 pm

    Outstanding review Bronx Born!

    Congratulations! Very well deserved!

“Trisha how could you unleash that slime on us. I feel violated… and somewhat distressed by the knowledge that I share the earth with one Mikey Adams.

If you are distressed that you share the earth with Mikey Adams, perspicacity has undoubtedly been transferred to you! :)

Okay, let me at least explain. I had to buy a wedding card for a wedding I’m going to Monday and I really like the couple so it took me about 45 minutes to pick it out. I really take my time with cards when the recipient means a lot to me! Well, I left my house while the Big Show was still on – I really enjoy listening to them, a lot more objectivity there – and when I was finished, the supreme loser was just coming on. There was no Yankee postgame to listen to so I just kept on EEI. I can usually tune him out but he was talking about the Yanks so I listened. The rest is nauseating history.

Can I keep my perspicacity mantle a while longer?

    :)

    ***************

Not funny at all, but how about the doctor that was found in her boyfriend’s chimney? It had to be HORRIFYING for her when she started to realize she wasn’t getting out of there. Hopefully she was drunk enough not to understand the full extent of what was happening to her. Just awful.

  116. BronxBorn September 3rd, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Thanks muchly SJ. The book is starting to get out there. With poetry one must be patient.

  117. GreenBeret7 September 3rd, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Montero grounds into DP. from the beginning of the season thru 15 May, he hit into 11 DPs. Since that day, this was his third GIDP.

  118. MTU September 3rd, 2010 at 8:38 pm

    Bronx-

Your march to Sainthood continues. Bravo. Congrats. :)

  119. Dylan September 3rd, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I was one of the few people who didn’t want to give up Montero in order to get Lee. I think he could be one of the better hitters in this league for the next 15 years. A-Rod and Jeter have already started to decline. Though they both have at least a few more good years left, its important to start building for the future. Guys like Montero and Nunez are the future of this organization. I think that next year is Posada’s last as a Yankee, and Jeter will probably need to move to DH or the outfield in a couple years.

  120. Benny Blanco September 3rd, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Is Granderson Batting 240 against lefties this year? And if so, is this his highest BA against lefties for his career?
