TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m. / YES Network

UMPIRES: HP Ed Hickox, 1B Fieldin Culbreth, 2B Jim Wolf, 3B Gary Cederstrom

WEATHER: Beautiful day. Not too hot. A lot of sunshine. The flags up top are showing a hard wind blowing out. It’s supposed to be pretty windy today, so it could get interesting.

FAMILIAR SPOT: For the second year in a row, the Yankees are the major’s first team to reach 85 wins.

WELCOME BACK: Javier Vazquez is returning to the rotation, having pitched his way back after a demotion to the bullpen. “I’m sure he’s thought about it, and he’s doing what he’s accustomed to doing, which is starting ball games,” Joe Girardi said. “I wouldn’t put too much pressure on this one start. It’s not something I want him to do. We want him to be a starter for us and we just thought we’d have him take a little break and work on those things he did out of the bullpen, and it seemed to really help him. I’m not going to make too much of today’s start.”

MINOR SUCCESS:
High-A Tampa locked up a playoff spot last night, meaning the Yankees top three affiliates will advance to the postseason.

HARD TO BEAT THAT: This is part of an email I received from Russell late last night:

Has there ever been more (Scrabble) value in two opposing pitchers? They BOTH have two Z’s in their last names and Javy has a Q to boot. Rzepczynski has 40 points to his last name. Vazquez has 37 points. I have no idea how to search for higher scrabble point totals by last name — baseball-reference does not yet have that feature. But I find it hard to imagine you could find another matchup in MLB history worth more than 77 points.

So, you know, there’s that.

UPDATE, 1:31 p.m.: Not a lot of boos but a few when the Blue Jays first hit of the day left the park for a solo homer to right. It’s 1-0 on the Overbay solo shot.

UPDATE, 1:34 p.m.: Few more boos now that McDonald got a ball off the foul pole for a two-run shot that has given the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

UPDATE, 1:44 p.m.: Dustin Moseley getting loose after a lead-off walk in the third inning.

UPDATE, 2:03 p.m.: RBI double by Jeter. Two-run single by Cano. It’s a 3-3 game in the bottom of the third.

UPDATE, 2:34 p.m.: RBI ground out by Gardner. Run-scoring wild pitch. Just like that, it’s a 5-3 Yankees lead. A couple of doubles by Francisco Cervelli have made a huge difference today.

UPDATE, 2:50 p.m.: For the second day in a row, Girardi goes to the bullpen with two outs in the fifth inning. Vazquez was clearly not happy to see Girardi come out of the dugout. Here’s Moseley to try to strand runners at the corners.

UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: A curious move for Girardi, and it doesn’t work out at all. Moseley allowed a two-run double that has tied the game at 5.

UPDATE, 3:30 p.m.: Bautista seemed to have a legit gripe there. He’s ejected after arguing a called strike three that was clearly outside, and that could be a break for the Yankees. Not facing him in a tied game seems to be a good thing.

UPDATE, 3:31 p.m.: Chopper up the middle and off Joba Chamberlain’s glove for an inning-ending double play. Another good break for the Yankees.

UPDATE, 3:43 p.m.: Marcus Thames. Again. A two-out, two-run home run for a 7-5 Yankees lead in the seventh. Even the most optimistic Thames supporter could not have predicted he’d have this kind of impact.

UPDATE, 3:48 p.m.: Ramiro Pena to third. Greg Golson to right.

Rzepczynski is too long, illegal word play.

  2. CB September 4th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Thames in RF will likely be better than Thames in LF. RF is much smaller and easier to play at the Stadium than LF.

To be honest, RF in the stadium doesn’t require that much range to play because many balls over your head are going to be out of the park.

I’d guess this might be a day when the Yankees really try to take advantage of the fact that they play two plus defensive CF in the outfield. They can shade Granderson to help out Thames and essentially tell Gardner to play LF aggressively, to play LF almost as if he were really playing CF.

The issue is that such a tactic would ideally require some practice and work to put into place. A last minute switch isn’t ideal.

It’s very difficult to know how the trade off will work. Thames has been red hot so it’s tempting to get both his and berkman’s bat into the lineup.

On the flip side, not only is Javy a fly ball pitcher, the Jays are a fly ball hitting team with significant LH power.

Girardi is probably betting that given the Jays power, tough fly balls to RF have a high probability of turning into home runs and it doesn’t matter as much who is playing RF.

    “LHP Marc Rzepczynski (1-3, 6.03)”

    Frightening.

This will not bode well for our offense.

  4. jacksquat September 4th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Javy vs the Jays at YS with the wind blowing out… this will be a real test.

  5. upstate kate September 4th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

are you trying for stupidest post of the day?

Erica might know how to find Scrabble values. ;)

  7. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Maybe this means that Javy will be put in the bullpen for the playoffs. It seems as if he pitches better coming out of the pen then starting…

  8. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

Ruby Tuesday, you are the worst troll is the history of trolldom-the Yankees crushed Rzepczynski in Toronto.

the over/under on HRs today has to be at least 6 with the way the wind is blowing…

  9. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

are the Red Sox playing a doubleheader today?

  10. UnKnown September 4th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

Which is the bad sun field. Right or Left. I think in the old stadium it was vicious in Left? Is that still true?

it’s going to be a good day if Javy pitches like this for the next 6 innings

  13. upstate kate September 4th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

    syd
yes, they are playing now and have another game tonight

  15. Doreen September 4th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Well, there is only one “z” tile in a scrabble set; so the second “z” in both names would be blank tiles, which have no value. So there’s that. :)

  16. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Vazquez is throwing so much better than he was a few weeks ago there is no comparison-his fastball has life again and it has nothing to do with starting or relieving, it’s the mechanical changes plus some additional confidence.

  17. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

    Nice inning for Javy.

  18. Tarheel In NYC September 4th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Great start by Javy! Good for him.

  19. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Nice 1st inning for Vazquez. His stuff was much better recently out of the bullpen and once he worked with Eiland. So hopefully stuff was his main problem and it wasn’t more mental.

  20. Doreen September 4th, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I’m thinking Ruby Tuesday is a superstitious sort. Maybe?

  21. rb from LI September 4th, 2010 at 1:16 pm

    No, Doreen. Just a troublemaker.

  22. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

  23. Yanksgal07 September 4th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

It would be great to get number eight …

    Go Yankees 2010 !!!

  24. m September 4th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

What thoughts go through a fielder’s head on those kind of grounders by Gardner?

  25. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Gardner has to be off and running before Jeter gets a chance to erase him.

  26. m September 4th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    Doreen,

You remember ER and California? That’s Ruby Tuesday.

He tried to explain his um, whatever you want to call them as “reverse jinxes”.

But it’s obvious what he really is.

  27. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

That is a positive by Jeter to keep it off the ground

  28. Rob B September 4th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Yankees got a break there. Gardy was out.

  29. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Nice steal by Gardner. Oops. Blown call.

If you’re Rumplestilsken, don’t you just say, “Let’s just go with the number”?

  32. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

yup he was out,….how can the ump not see that standing right there. Oh well hopefully we get a RBI out of the freebie

  33. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

poor Robbie…why won’t Girardi give him a day off…he’s given Jeter a day off recently

  34. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Cano continues with the bad swings.

  35. Ruby Tuesday September 4th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

And Rzepczynski has a shut out going. You were saying?

  36. ac1 September 4th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

cano really needs a day off.

  37. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Look at that horrible 3-1 change up Teixeira swung at. He was guessing that Rzepczynski would throw him the same pitch he threw on 3-0 – a two seamer away.

The timing on Tex’s swing is so narrow, that he was unable to wait long enough to recognize that it wasn’t a two seamer but a change up that wasn’t going to be close to a strike.

  38. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

The last couple of days Cano has taken the weakest swings. Waiting until Arod comes off the dl to give him a day off makes no sense. It also isn’t fair to Cano.

  39. m September 4th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Go back and find the number of shut outs after the first inning. In all of baseball. Then come back and tell us what you find. :?

  40. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

    CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

then he crushed the 3-2 pitch but right at Snyder. He was better off missing the change, it wasn’t a pitch he could really drive anywhere.

  41. Rob B September 4th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Overbite has always killed the Yankees.

  42. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

that won’t be the last one hit out today, that’s a guarantee…

  43. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

mistake there…right down the middle and up

  44. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

“then he crushed the 3-2 pitch but right at Snyder. He was better off missing the change, it wasn’t a pitch he could really drive anywhere.”

He was better off not swinging at a pitch in the dirt. The issue there was his pitch recognition and how it relates to his swing. That was the exact problem he had in the post season last year.

The pitch he wound up hitting hard was a bad slider that missed it’s spot.

  45. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

    A shutout after one inning?

    You really are a moron.

  46. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

The Yankee pitchers have to keep the ball down to Overbay!! Especially today with the wind Vazquez has to keep the ball down. Now a 4 pitch walk. That is how you know it’s not just stuff with him and it’s mental also.

  47. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

That home run by overbay is part of the reason why Girardi decided to play Thames in RF.

In another park with a deeper RF that ball would have been very difficult to play.

In yankee stadium with that short porch if the ball is over your head as a RF there’s a good chance it’s gone and there’s nothing to defend.

  48. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Ugh. Guess the improvements lasted one inning.

  49. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

    —————————————
Rzepczynski has as much of a chance throwing a shutout against the Yankees as one of your stupid comments has of being correct. You have a worse record than a broken clock.

  50. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Vazquez is a joke. Just like AJ. Homerun or something goes bad and he completely loses it. Bad body language and afraid of the strike zone. Just pathetic.

  51. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

and that’s how things go from fine 1 hr to…walking someone and giving up another homerun

    —————–

Yup seems like they both have the same deal with that. Give up one run and lose it all of a sudden. Yesterday we saw Nova give up some runs and keep it together and have a productive day….ridiculous Vasquez and Burnett

  55. Brappy55 September 4th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

    Thats embarassing….McDonald is trash

  56. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Javy’s getting under the ball again much more frequently this inning. He did it a couple of times in the first but the blue jays were so aggressive it wasn’t an issue.

Right now though he’s not consistently staying on top and that’s why he’s throwing those cement mixer sliders that are getting crushed.

He just has not repeated his delivery consistently this year and it’s killed him.

  57. Northy September 4th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Two terrible pitches by Vasquez – right down broadway

  58. Niblick September 4th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

I’m beginning to think that Dave Eiland and Joe G. are full of crap when they claim that they fix a pitcher – because their “fixes” don’t ever seem to take. Javy. AJ. Etc. Does Eiland even have a clue?

  59. Ace September 4th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

That’s the Javy we know n hate. Face it. He stinks. Keep him in pen when Andy is back

  60. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

it sure doesn’t take much for the whiners and complainers to go back to their roots. If the Jays score one more run they’ll be calling for Vazquez to be pelted with eggs.

  61. tyanksfan36 September 4th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Cano looked really tired at that AB. I hope he gets a day off tomorrow with Arod hopefully coming back. Doesn’t make sense why he didn’t rest him today, its not like he has been red hot.

  62. Crash September 4th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

They should of kept Javy in the bullpen. He was actually pitching well as a long man. Hopefully Nova will be good in his next start. And they eventually give Javy spot to Pettitte when he returns.

  63. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

    Nova > Javy

    It’s really pretty clear.

  64. GhettoBlaster September 4th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I say Javy is lucky to pitch into the 5th inning.

  65. Northy September 4th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

But well – they were due a stinker and this game might be it.

But still 7 innings to come back

  66. Niblick September 4th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Nice. 6 pitches. The Yanks must be double parked again.

  67. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

nothing like a 6 pitch inning

  68. Niblick September 4th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Javy’s due a stinker every time he starts.

  69. ac1 September 4th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

that’s the type of inning the yankees havent had much of during the winning streak and we would not like to see again.

  70. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

I am not among the whiners or complainers, but Javy needs to show some consistency in order to remain in this rotation for the rest of the season. He probably won’t be there in the playoffs anyway.

  71. rconn23 September 4th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Could be kind of a sluggish games for the Yankees today. Can’t win them all.

  72. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

That was a pathetic inning by the Yankee bats. Thames swings 2-0 at a pitch he can’t drive, Berkman swings at the 1st pitch and Granderson 2nd. Some patient at bats against a 6 era pitcher would be nice.

  73. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Oh, they’ll still win the game, but the hope was that Javy could start a playoff game, and alas, he can’t.

  74. Ruby Tuesday September 4th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

And Rzepczynski still has a shutout going.

In homeruns: Blue Jays 2; Us, 0.

    You were saying?

  75. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

They should get Mosley up. Javy is a mess out on the mound with his mechanics.

  76. Niblick September 4th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

    Almost time for the eggs.

  77. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Playoff rotation will be CC, Andy, AJ and Phil. That is the rotation that gives Yanks the best chance to win, AJ and Phil’s struggles notwithstanding.

  78. JobaTipsHisCap September 4th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Signing Javy is a disaster. anyone disagrees?

  79. m September 4th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Nobody said anything, you started this nonsense.

  80. Purenyyankee September 4th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Its STILL 2004 all over again with this Loser Vazquez. Nothing has changed. Once a STIFF, always a STIFF.

  81. blake September 4th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Can’t have too long a leash with Javy today in the wind when you have two guys in the pen that can sink the ball.

  82. ChokeXOnXFailure September 4th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

    Dustin Moseley up already. Yikes.

Well, they tried. I just think it’s clear that Javy isn’t gonna cut it. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice…won’t get fooled again.

  83. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Vazquez is only in the rotation until Andy comes back. Hopefully that is very soon. Small ballpark and Vazquez’s stuff is not a combination for success. With Vazquez you could see most of it is mental. He was very aggressive the 1st inning and as soon as he gave up the homerun to Overbay he was scared to throw strikes. The Yanks can’t leave him in the rotation he is a mess.

  84. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

I disagree. They only gave up Melky, and he did give them a stretch of 15 good games or so. He’s not quite the innings eater they expected, but I would not consider him to be a total disaster.

  85. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

looks like Javy is on a short leash

  86. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

“Signing Javy is a disaster. anyone disagrees?”

The trade? I wouldn’t have made the it because I like Vizcaino, but there was a reasonable basis for making the move (i.e., a risk worth taking given their business model and the innings load of CC, Andy, and AJ last season), and I wouldn’t be surprised if Javy has a good year for an NL next season.

  87. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

he had such a good first inning…..what happened??????? Back to the bullpen for Javy just leave him there he’s better out of the pen

  88. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Vazquez better stay away from Bautista here. When he sees a fastball he swings out of his shoes.

    ——————————————————————–

Not sure they’re gonna throw 2 lefties and 2 righties in a row. Our philosophy (and it’s a common one) is to break up lefties and righties when possible so that the batters don’t get too comfortable. But you might be right, because Phil’s been struggling, and AJ is Jekyll and Hyde. So we’ll see.

  90. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

It’s not mental with Vazquez unless you think “mental” issues are causing his mechanics to be a mess.

Watch the way he throws the ball. Watch his arm. He’s not consistent with how his arm action is.

No pitcher can be successful that way.

And with Vazquez the mechanical issues are obvious and glaring. They stick out like a sore thumb.

  91. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

what the hell is Bautista starring down Vasquez for after the strikeout

  92. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Bautista’s wild swings at off speed pitches is really funny to watch. He has no chance at anything but a fastball.

  93. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

    Choke-

So flip AJ and Andy. That would be like last years rotation anyhow.

  94. Niblick September 4th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

It’ll be nice to see vazquez off the team next year – almost as bad a decison to bring him back as it was the nick DL johnson signing..

what did mosely do wrong to get demoted to the bullpen – i didn’t pitching better than vazquez will get you demoted?

only cashman could come up with a decison like that

Bad decision to put vaz in the rotation again.

He has shown that he can’t get the job done & now with 27 games left in the season something is going too change?

Mosely is not that good but i liked the fact that he gives us a chance too win every time out, just like nova, that is what you are looking for til pettitte gets back.

Girardi has done a great jobs on a lot of things, most things in fact from resting older players & a great job in managing the pen but things were working by taking vaz out of the rotation & it got us on a nice run that is needed.

Vaz is a perfect long man, should of been left in the pen.

That’s what I was thinking, too. Having AJ in a game two scares the bejeezus out of me, but at this point, we just have to suck it up and hope “Game 2 of the World Series” AJ shows up.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Logan come from Atlanta in the Javy deal? If so, then that tips the scale in our favor. Logan’s been a boon to the bullpen. ;)

  108. CB September 4th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Mosley walked way too many hitters for the kind of pitcher he is. He kept them in games but he was getting lucky. And in that last start you could see that teams had finally started paying attention to him and establishing a plan of attack.

Mosley’s command has not been good and unless that changes it’s only a matter of time before he blows up.

  115. MG September 4th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

that fastball to Wells missed the target by about 18 inches, he really wasn’t much better there. He is what he is and that’s not nearly as bad as some of you think. He’s not a top of the rotation guy at this point in his career (and realistically, he never was) but he is capable of decent outings. The 2nd HR was a foul pole job, it wasn’t exactly a rocket and that was 2 runs.

  116. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

The outcome worked out due to luck, but that’s just not the kind of thought process you want to see out of a player. Catcher’s in particular should have a deeper understanding of the game.

Down 3-0 the yankees need baserunners and to avoid making outs. The risk was not worth it.

I think his mechanics change because he thinks too much on the mound and tries to do too much and that makes his arm angle move. “I think his mechanics change because he thinks too much on the mound and tries to do too much and that makes his arm angle move. He was fine in the 1st inning”

Actually he wasn’t fine in the first inning. He just got away with his mistakes.

And it’s not his arm angle that’s changing.

His front side is opening faster than his backside and his arm lags his body. It’s been that way the entire year.

He was doing that in the first inning as well. Go back and rewatch that inning. In particular you’ll see a few fastball’s that were around 85-86. Those were the pitches were he was blatantly doing the same thing he was in the inning where he got hit around – he was getting under the ball and pushing it.

So the idea that game conditions caused his mental state to change which made his mechanics change doesn’t hold.

He’s not repeating his mechanics. That’s primarily a physical skill. It’s an issue he’s also dealt with frequently in his career due to the way he throws.

How many RH at bats have people seen Berkman take over his career?

Mark Teixeira has had numerous at bats just like the one Berkman just had this season. If you picked out any one of them (or a small handful of them) you could just as easily jump to similar conclusions.

Berkman is better from the left side but it’s not as if he’s completely incompetent as a RH batter either. Few switch hitters are ever equally good from both sides though.

At this stage of Javy’s career, his mechanics have to be flawless in order to be effective because the velocity isn’t what it was.

Without clean mechanics, it’s a real struggle for him.

It’s not mental. It’s all physical.

When his mechanics are clean, he can still be an effective pitcher.

  193. JoeyA September 4th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

How many times has Javy gotten us a win?

I’m not talking about how many wins he has, because most of those wins were in spite of his pitching, not because of it.

Let’s just gave facts, Javy’s stuff doesn’t lend itself to pitching in this small a ballpark. He leaves pitches up and needs them to be singles, doubles @ most.

Once those high fly balls and line drives become home runs, Javy’s ability to work his way out of trouble is almost completely diminished.

  194. CB September 4th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

“I have watched many of his AB this year and he seems to have trouble picking up the ball batting RH.”

Lance Berkman has had 71 at bats as a RH hitter this entire season nearly all of which were with the Astros.

Well said. He has no margin for error at all anymore. If he’s not perfect with his throwing mechanics he’s at huge risk for the ball getting hit very hard.

He’s out there completely on guile. If anything, every out he does get is purely based on his “mental” game and experience because physically he just doens’t have much right now.

Great so Vazquez has turned into Jamie Moyer. No fastball some off speed pitches and needs to be pin point with his location to get people out. Good thing he isn’t signed past this year. Andy get back soon!! Vazquez would never be successful in the play offs.

  204. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

    MLB Package.

“71 at bats is nothing. That’s why I referred to his career when making generalizations about his overall skill set.”

Did I say that he shouldn’t hit v. RHP No, only that his swing v. RHP in comparison to his swing v. LHP looks to be indicative of a hitter that isn’t seeing the ball well.

“71 at bats is nothing. That’s why I referred to his career when making generalizations about his overall skill set.”

So, I’m not making an observation about his overall skill set. I’m just putting forth an observation. I don’t know if it’s accurate, or if it’s enduring.

Even if you watch Houston Astros baseball religiously and happen to see every one of those 71 at bats it’s not a lot of information.

Javy labored this inning but did not break.
Hopefully, he will find lhis rythm from next inning.

Negative comments based on Javy today are justified upto this point.
But when some make comments without checking facts on alll his past starts, that is stupidity.
He pitched very well for many starts before he lost the velocity and demoted to BP.

  212. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

    CB,

That’s why the “mental midget” whine about Javy makes no sense.

He’s pitching ALL on guts right now.

You can’t be “gutless” and pitch like hrs pitching now.

In fact, the opposite is true.

He’s out there competing with diminished stuff and flawed mechanics.

    That takes guts.

  213. UnKnown September 4th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

I can actually see a scenario where Javy comes in the 3rd inning in a post season game and pitches like 4 shut out innings to give the Yanks time to climb back into like a 5 to 0 game or something. Definitely can’t see him starting a game in October.

Hopefully Nunez touched 2nd base there

  214. pat September 4th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

That would have been a heck of a catch.

  215. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

  216. CB September 4th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

“You are basically using very little information from some short posts to overgeneralize what I’m thinking.”

I have no desire to get into one of those protracted debates you involve yourself here. My original comment wasn’t even directed at you. Several people made comments about Berkman.

You for some reason seem to have taken it as some kind of slight to yourself. That wasn’t the case.

And I’m not inferring anything about what your thinking. 71 at bats isn’t a lot of information and if another poster tried to suggest that it was you’d get into some argument with them about the silliness of drawing conclusions from small samples.

  223. blake September 4th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    SJ, CB,
You guys are right. Javy has nothing…some of the fastballs he’s throwing are 86 MPH…its not mental of because he is gutless or anything like that. His mechanics and stuff have left him and he’s just having to pitch with lesser weapons than he’s used to…its admirable really and I feel bad for him…but that said, he’s just not able to be very effective right now.

  224. MG September 4th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Vazquez’ next day to start would be Thursday, an off-day for the Yankees. It’s very possible this is his last start of the year with Andy taking his next scheduled start after that.

  225. UnKnown September 4th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Crazy Nunez playing this game with reckless abandon. Almost got doubled up twice on that series of events and hacks at everything.

“He’s pitching ALL on guts right now.

In fact, the opposite is true. ”

It’s very ironic isn’t it? The most damning criticism of the player is the exact opposite of the truth.

I watched Javy throw quite a bit last season as he was having such a strong year. He looks nothing like he did last year. Not even remotely the same. He has so few of the tools he had last year.

Every out he gets at times is a struggle. Each out is moxie right now.

His stuff is AAAA quality stuff in terms of physical performance.

  229. ChokeXOnXFailure September 4th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Yeah, I’m the only one who does that. You never do.

“You for some reason seem to have taken it as some kind of slight to yourself. That wasn’t the case.”

You made a general point about posts about Berkman. I had just posted something about Berkman, so I expanded on my post in response to your comment. You then responded by quoting that post. I think my reaction was reasonable.

“And I’m not inferring anything about what your thinking. 71 at bats isn’t a lot of information and if another poster tried to suggest that it was you’d get into some argument with them about the silliness of drawing conclusions from small samples.”

Again, I already said I wasn’t necessarily generalizing anything about Berkman going forward, but with aging players, sometimes you look for little signs. Quite often, those signs mean very little, but that’s not always the case.

  232. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

    SJ-

Agree. In fact, he has shown not to implode with diminished stuff, unlike AJ whose problems are definitely more mental than physical.

  233. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Here is how good this team is this year….

Today, Vazquez is walking a tightrope….

Jeter is in the worst slump of his career and a third (Arod, Swisher, and Posada) of the regular lineup is out and they have scored 5 runs in 4 innings and have the lead.

    That’s pretty amazing.

  234. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

CB, the same ones who call Vazquez ‘gutless’ would have also called Catfish Hunter, Ed Figueroa, and Mel Stottlemyre gutless at the end of their careers. And, of course, it couldn’t be further from the truth. You can’t pitch well without the tools and Vazquez just doesn’t have them in 2010.

    That sounds like a plan.

Let’s hope Andy rehab goes well and they can follow through with it.

Even in the innings where he’s not giving up runs Vazquez just does’t look good. He’s not consistent with the way he’s throwing the ball at all.

  242. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

I am sure Girardi will go batter to batter with Vazquez in the 5th. Guts or not it’s very hard to be perfect in this ballpark especially against a homerun hitting team.

  243. TheStraw September 4th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Yankees will have some decisions to make on long relief for the playoffs. Javy, Moseley, Nova, Gaudin and Mitre all competing for two spots at most.

  244. MG September 4th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

there is an interesting decision coming up for Girardi-CC would not face the Rays in the 1st series if he pitches in turn for his next two starts, he’d have to move back a day or 2 to be in both series. If I’m the manager that’s exactly what I’d do.

  247. ron September 4th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I agree about it being amazing.

Cervelli has been hitting a little better & we have been bringing up some minor leaguers over the last few years that really have been helping with some really great looking ones not far off.

This team has a chance to burry the rest of the majors if we just keep the focus on pitching, lee in particular.

Over the last 8 games or so this team has taken a similar look it had in the dynasy years of the 90′s.

With the team now, their financial resources, the farm system it is scary how good they can be.

  248. MG September 4th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Big test for Vazquez here. That 1st pitch was in a really bad location…

  250. CB September 4th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Javy started out that at bat by throwing Wise an 85 mph fastball.

And he was somehow able to get him out by throwing junk and changing speeds.

His stuff is horrible but he’s still gotten outs. And outs against a very dangerous team.

I really have no idea how he’s doing it. It’s purely on veteran guile.

  251. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Poor Gardner. The wind/sun must be crazy in LF today.

  252. GreenBeret7 September 4th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Nunez will eventually learn a little more self control. He’s much like a 23 year old Cano. He figures if he can reach it, he can hit it. Must be working fairly well. He was hiting .300 at AAA and hitting .290 and producing runs along with stealing bases. Defense has yet to hurt. Find a real topic to whine about….like why you feel the need to complain about everything. It’s either mental or you’re gutless.

  267. CB September 4th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

This is a situation where not having a second LH reliever out of the pen hurts.

The Yankees are fortunate to have Logan. Marte may need shoulder surgery.

Without Logan they would be going into the post season with Royce Ring as their LH specialist. That would have been a big problem.

  268. BBFan September 4th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

    Girardi showed something.
Yesterday when he took out Nova, people, mainly mediots, were wondering if he would do it to a veteran. Girardi replied he would and he followed up today.

    Tough outing for Javy.

    Back to back short starts.

Gonna need innings from Phil tomorrow.

  274. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

That was a terrible ending for Vazquez. 2 outs and then of course more nibbling. We know he is scared of their 2 best hitters but you have to make Bautista hit the ball. If Girardi knew that was going to happen he would of taken him out before the Bautista at bat. I would be surprised if Vazquez makes another start. Flaherty was right about his stuff all game, he had nothing.

  275. jesusmonterofordh September 4th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

Yesterday he went to Logan – an arm he trust in a similar situation….

    So why this move today?

  291. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

They haven’t gotten Overbay out all year.

I think that’s his 18th extra base hit against the Yankees.

Between Bautista and Overbay, they will combine to reach base nearly 100 times against the Yankees this year.

    That’s inexcusable.

    New ballgame.

  292. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

  293. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Great, a pitch right down the middle to Overrated. This mess never would of happened if Vazquez didn’t nibble to 2 straight batters. The rotation is an absolute mess. CC is the only pitcher that is consistent and gives them 6 innings or more.

  294. Ace September 4th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

  295. Yanksgal07 September 4th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Gee …what a great move taking Javy out and not giving him a chance for the last out. He could have done the same thing OR he could have gotten the out like he has the past few innings when he got into a jam. The grass always does seem greener on the other side of the fence …till you get there.

Let’s get some more runs the next inning ….

    Go Yankees 2010 !!

  296. MG September 4th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

what a bunch of whiners and complainers. You want Moseley starting, he comes in and gives up a hit and you complain about him.

It’s a tie game, 5th inning, a game the Yankees most likely will win, just shut up and watch it happen.

  297. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Wait. If Logan is up, why wasn’t he facing Overbay?

  298. CB September 4th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I understand Girardi wants to use a guy who can give them innings given Javy’s short start.

But that was a very high leverage spot and they needed a pitcher who has the stuff to miss bats.

Logan is up now. If he’s ok to warm up and get used now I have no idea why he wasn’t pitching to overbay given how big that spot was. Very confusing seeing Logan up and warming now.

  299. pat September 4th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Right about now it doesn’t really matter what Vazquez is or isn’t happy about

The good thing is the Yankees will send him on his merry way in the offseason

He is put back in the rotation and reverts to the same pattern

Some guys are what they are, unreliable.

Team battles back from a 3-0 hole, gives you a 5-3 lead and you can’t get out of the 5th cleanly. Says it all.

  316. SJ44 September 4th, 2010 at 3:01 pm

If you warm up Logan with Moseley in there, it’s probably smart to have him up earlier to be ready to face Overbay.

Especially since he’s the only guy on this staff who has been able to get Overbay out this year.

  351. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Marte better not squeeze that bottle with his left hand, it might fall off. Too bad he is always hurt. The Yanks could of really used him in the earlier innings with Logan being the late inning lefty. You don’t want to have to use your only lefty in the 5th and 6th innings.

Moseley had faced Overbay 8 times in his career before today. One walk, 5 ground ball outs (4 of them weak), a fly ball and a strikeout. I can understand a preference for Logan but with that experience with Moseley it’s probably not enough to not go with him in that spot.

  371. Doreen September 4th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

It’s not a matter of “defending” a player. If a guy is having a bad outing, he’s having a bad outing. Javy has at least shown a work ethic and desire. If it can’t culminate in the wanted results, it doesn’t make him gutless or a non-competitor. It just makes him ineffective.

I had hoped he’d find his way. He’s had a rough year, but he hasn’t shied away from the work or the inquisition after games.

tex is the man. girardi has to be seeing that cano needs a break. give him one day, maybe two, get him fresh.

  419. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

Pitchers should never pitch Bautista inside with a fastball. Make him prove he can hit the ball to RF. Even if he hits the ball it will probably stay in the ballpark until he proves the can drive the ball there.

  420. kd September 4th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

like cc’s ace status, maybe the glove makes tex a ‘bargain’ as well.

  421. Eroc September 4th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

“So Girardi played the right card with Logan and it didn’t work with wise. Do you blame Girardi or Logan?”

Girardi. He should have brought in Mitre to face the lefty.

  422. stuckey99 September 4th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

At a certain point in time, wouldn’t it be wise for some of you to consider finding a team to root for whose players and manager exhibits the reliability, character, fortitude and intelligence you require, rather than this team as apparently currently constituted?

So when Andy Pettitte stops being successful he ceases to have guts?

This is a meaningless word in regards to baseball. Why hasn’t there ever been a unsuccessful baseball player with “guts?” It’s just another way to explain a poor performance when people are too obtuse to look for root causes.

Vazquez has a dead arm. Burnett has always been an inconsistent starter. Neither lack “guts,” they just don’t perform up to your standards.”

    +++++++++++++++++

Nope we will just acknowledge the fact that Andy was a successful Yankee and give him his due and say thanks for the terrific years of service and Championships

Andy Pettitte has done it time and time again when called upon for the team

No doubt in my mind if Vazquez was in Milwaukee, Florida, places where the light isn’t shining on him, he would be pitching better than this junk on the mound that he is doing for us.

This guy put the team in a 3-0 hole, then the team ties it up and takes a 5-3 lead and the very next inning with 2 outs he creates a jam that has the manager take him out right there and then. It just shows the lack of trust Girardi has in him that he yanked him there and then

The 3-2 pitch to Bautista was off the plate, but even little leaguers are taught you have to swing at anything close on a 3-2 count.

Besides, the first pitch was a strike. It was the exact same pitch and location as the second strike. It evened out in the end.

I’m just a little disappointed that Bautista can’t go for the Golden Sombrero! :D

  459. CB September 4th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Thames has been on the ball all day. He’s made several very hard outs to the deepest section of the park where he just got under the ball.

He missed the first pitch he got to hit by being too quick. And he was unhappy with himself.

He got a second pitch and did not miss.

He is hitting everything hard right now. He’s squaring one ball after another. And he’s bull strong so when he hits it it goes very far.

What a great pick up he’s been. Where would this team be without him.

  460. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Good job Thames. Now bring in Kearns for defense in RF.

  468. ZMAN September 4th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

The roster now has so much balance – something we didn’t have earlier in the season. We have lineups that can crush lefties AND righties now. And late in the game, if they bring in a hard throwing RH to neutralize Thames, Berkman is there, or hard throwing lefty, we can just bring in Thames. Plus Kearns when he is hot can hit both types of pitching. And Nunez at the bottom providing speed.

The balance has improved dramatically. We went from vulnerable against lefties to now crushing most of them.

The Yankees bench, bullpen is so much more improved facets that are helpful in the playoffs

The lineup will get Arod back tomorrow
The rotation will get Andy back in a short while

Yanks have picked up steam at the right time.

    Lets Go Yankees

  508. CB September 4th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

“I always figured the Yankees went into the season knowing the bench was pretty weak but would make adjustments, if needed, at the trade deadline.”

This is something that Yankee fans simply don’t understand. It’s kind of amazing because it happens every single year.

And every single year yankee fans get into a panic about two things which always change and improve: the bench and the bull pen.

Yankee fans just cannot accept the fact that players who would be quality bench players for the yankees can get starting positions with other teams.

Jerry Hairston has been starting for the Padres – a first place club – this entire season. Why would he even want to play for the yankees if he’s gong to be a bench guy. Money always talks but players want to play if for no other reason than that is what ensures their longer term financial security past the current year.

Guys like Austin Kearns, never mind Lance Berkman, are never going to agree to bench roles with the yankees in the winter when they can get more playing time elsewhere.

But that dynamic changes as the season goes on. Teams fall out of the race and players who wouldn’t take bench spots in the winter are made available in trades and are satisfied, even happy, to play off the bench in August in a pennant race.

This happens every single year. But impatient yankee fans still don’t seem to figure this out or see the larger patter when it’s April and the complaints about the bench are endless.

This is the yankees strategy for building a bench right now and will be until some guys from the minors like Nunez are ready to assume utility roles with the big league club.

  509. Macfan September 4th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Another scoreless outing from the Yankees pen again with MO to come in the 9th

  510. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

I wouldn’t count on Wood not being with the Yankees next year. They have paid competitive salaries to other relievers like Gordon and Farnsworth, why not pay a guy like Wood
    ————–

It would be great if he came back next year. The only reason I said he might not is if another team offers him $5m to close and the Yankee aren’t going to be able to match that. Maybe $3m+ but not much higher than that. It depends on what is more important to him, winning or a little bit more money.

  511. umbrelladoc September 4th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Indeed, it is good to have Wood.

  512. Joe from Long Island September 4th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

SJ – is that right, about Wood and Eiland? That’s really remarkable. If that’s true, it’s doesn’t speak well of many pitching coaches. But, it is in keeping with a lot of what I’ve read about Eiland, about both his diligence, and pitching smarts.

The Yanks really seem to have a solid coaching staff.

Bobby Jenks closes it out – the immortal Clay Buchholz suffers the loss.

  514. GreenBeret7 September 4th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

You can’t have a strong bench if you have to play them as regulars, like they did early this year. NYYs was lucky that they had some young players come in from Scranton that helped win a lot of games.

  515. syd_cash September 4th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

redsox are fading into oblivion…maybe after another week people will stop bringing there name up in the pennant race

  516. Bronx Jeers September 4th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Boston just lost so I have to get this in quickly.

    The magic number right now?

    A magical moment.

wow, Buck has a rifle behind the plate…

  518. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Wood was good in June too.

  519. Yogi Mantle September 4th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Wow, that was some throw, but he was safe. Make up call?

  520. stuckey99 September 4th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Hmmm, I see the Sox just dropped their first game to the Whitesox…

On that note, I’d like thanks today’s umpiring for their usual excellent conscientious job today at the Stadium.

And I’d also like to give a shout out to Boston College for their big win against Weber State this afternoon.

Going to go celebrate another (probable) Yankees win with a big, steaming bowl of chowda.

    Wicked good day.

    Wicked good.

Yanks on the verge of 8 straight wins

BloSux lose to the Pale Hose

Ahhh, feels good to be a Yankees fan. :) ooh yeah

  522. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

He was safe. I can’t blieve it was that close and Pena had such a big jump.

  523. Yogi Mantle September 4th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

The RS gave up a lot of hits, though only 3 runs.

  524. MG September 4th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

remember, you can never count the Sox out of anything, they never lose and even if they do it doesn’t count…

Brett Gardner: The Incredible on-base machine.

It will be interesting once A-Rid is back whether Girardi keeps Gardner at the top of the lineup.

The gap between Gardner and Jeter in terms of speed, pitches seen, and on base ability this season is stark.

  526. jackamir September 4th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

It’s a good time to be a Yankee fan. I wonder how many Met fans are swinging over to the Pinstripers.

  528. Yogi Mantle September 4th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

The called balls and strikes have gotten so bad that its almost hard to get angry about it anymore.

While the talking heads are overboard about the replay, maybe they should focus more on how bad the Home Plate umpires have been all year.

  529. CB September 4th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

“Wood was a great add by Cash. Made up for Park.”

Wood and Park aren’t that different in terms of strategy for building a bull pen. People aren’t fully seeing this.

Everyone loves Wood now. But Wood was utter garbage for the Indians this season. He was horrible. He was blowing saves and recurrently injured. He’d just gotten off the DL and thrown only a few appearances before he was traded to the yankees.

So in other words the yankees had no real clue what they were getting in Wood. All they knew was his past record for having great stuff, limited control and his immediate performance this season which was abysmal and disappointing.

The yankees took an educated risk in trading for Wood. And it was absolutely the prudent thing to do because the cost was low and worth the potential upside benefit.

That same strategic point of view for building a pen was used to select Park. The risk on Park was minimal – 1.25M after he turned down a $3M deal from the phillies while looking for a multi-year deal. It was a very low cost move to add the 12th man to a bull pen. Park was very good for the Phillies last year out of the pen. Go back and look at how the threw in the playoffs for them and how he threw against the yankees in the series.

The same strategy brought them Wood and Park. Guess what, those kinds of plays work out 50% of the time you are going to wing up with a very good bull pen by the time August rolls around. And that’s what’s happenned.

But it takes time to sort out how those risks are or arent’ going to pay off and then wait to see how the trade market develops.

Jeter needs help and I think he has to swallow some pride and get Long’s tutorial. He needs to sleep on the other side of his bed.

  532. MG September 4th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

CB, great insight into the thought process for bringing in first Park and then Wood.

  533. Captain Clutch September 4th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

The gap between Gardner and Jeter in terms of speed, pitches seen, and on base ability this season is stark.
    ———————

I definitely would. He gets something going at the top and it gives the big bats a baserunner. With Jeter struggling and not getting on base it’s very quiet at the top until the big guys come up. A great lineup with Arod back would be Gardner, Jeter and then Swish 6th. It extends the lineup even more.

  534. hardwired7 September 4th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

“He needs to sleep on the other side of his bed.”

I wonder how Mrs. Long is going to feel about that?

    love it Mo :)

  537. kd September 4th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

is there another team in baseball with more grind than the yankees?

game in game out, they never give up. you see a lot of team mailing it in when their starting pitcher doesn’t have it. this team simply doesn’t quit. yes, they’re not perfect. but you get the sense that they’re gearing up for a deep playoff run

  538. GreenBeret7 September 4th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Rivera is almost as automatic as any pitcher in history in the closer role. The Sandy Koufax of closers.

  539. MG September 4th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

how is it possible that Mo, at age 40, is having what is probably his best year statistically?

    Just amazing, what a performer.

  540. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

“is there another team in baseball with more grind than the yankees”

Probably, but they don’t have as much talent.

  547. CB September 4th, 2010 at 4:17 pm

“game in game out, they never give up. ”

No. They never do. The level at which this cohort of players has performed at over the past two seasons has been extraordinary.

To win 100 games is extremely difficult. To have a shot to win 100 games in back to back seasons even more so.

And you don’t do that if you don’t flat out compete all the time, every inning, wire to wire.

But this teams ability to fight too often gets dismissed as a function of talent and money.

  548. Rich in NJ September 4th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

    Mo is not in decline.

  558. Yogi Mantle September 4th, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Thames has been doing really well.

Javy didn’t have much today, but he battled. He had nothing but kept the score down early to help the Yankees to this win.

    Nice job all around.

  559. kd September 4th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

“But this teams ability to fight too often gets dismissed as a function of talent and money.”

I think that’s the most frustrating thing about being a yankee fan, the pure pursuit of baseball excellence is often overlooked by people focused on the payroll. imagine what espn would do if the red sox showed this kind of fight?

last year going into the playoffs this team showed a quiet confidence. this year they deserve to feel the same

  560. jackamir September 4th, 2010 at 4:23 pm
