Berkman, according to that salary chart. gets a bundle of money next year. The Yankees are stuck paying that amount right?

    —————————————————————————

    Not so SAS.

Berkman has a 15 mil$ club option for 2011 which will definitely not be picked up.

The Yanks will have to pay him a 2 mil buyout though unless that was part of the cash considerations that the Astros agreed to although I doubt it.

  2. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 10:03 pm

The Astros considered giving the Yanks 2 mil for about 2 minutes.

  3. TheKiid September 5th, 2010 at 10:03 pm

(As part of no trade waiver, Yankees agreed not to exercise the 2011 team option $2M paid by Houston Astros)

no they won’t. the astros paid it.

Man are there ever some doozies in the Madden article that Carl posted.

    Some highlights:

    First, the headline:

“Yanks must bring in Matt Holliday, ship out Robinson Cano & Phil Hughes”

    then…

“If they want to be foolish, they could fill first base by throwing $100 million at Boras client Mark Teixeira.”

    and…

“And while the Bombers are going to need a lefty in the rotation, it should not be Andy Pettitte, who had nothing by season’s end. Unpredictable as he may be, Oliver Perez is by far the best lefty option on the market and he’s only 27.”

Congratulations Bill Madden. You’ve just cost the Yankees a championship!

  6. SAS September 5th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

I am very glad we don’t have to pay a some-time DH that kind of money. I would keep him for the right amount. I think he would fit the Yankees make up just fine.

  7. SAS September 5th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

    Was that article a joke?

  8. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

Didn’t get to see today’s game but can’t win them all. Lost no ground to Tampa. Sounds like Hughes knows what he needs to do and sometimes that’s half the battle.

Hopefully the Yankees will be able to take care of business against the Orioles. They have been playing better and it won’t be easy but really at home the Yanks should take 2 of 3 or more in this series. Would be nice if the Sox could help out and take a game or two against Tampa also.

That Madden article is a good example of why you should pay absolutely no attention to reporters once they take their “reporting hat” off and put on their “analyst hat”…most don’t have a clue what they are talking about.

St. Louis has had an awful season. Not sure what’s going on there but whoever in their front office leaked that story about Colby Rasmus’ making a trade request is either setting up La Russa or Rasmus’ departure from that team.

It could have been someone just trying to teach Rasmus a lesson but if it was they were playing with fire because now Pujols seems to have a major problem with Rasmus. Not a good situation. Even if Tony is out, which he likely is, can’t imagne Rasmus is going to be real popular in the club house.

What a bizarre situation that is.

a friend of mine is from St. Louis and just visited there a couple weeks ago. He said he couldn’t believe how tired the city was of Larussa…said that’s about all he heard while he was there and he doubted he would be there much longer.

    SAS-

Rasmus is a 24 year old CF on the Cardinals. He’s one of the most physically gifted young players in the game. He could hit 40 HR as a CF in the right park. He struggles some against LH hitting but that’s the only flaw in his game.

He and La Russa have had significant problems this season for a host of reason. Rasmus has been something of a problem for the Cards for a few years now. They’ve been unhappy with his behavior in the past.

For unclear reasons, La Russa hasn’t been playing Rasmus everyday. What was leaked today is that Rasmus has evidently asked to be traded twice. That leak was done intentionally. A 24 year old making trade demands is not going to sit well with veterans in the club house and Pujols was not happy at all to hear it. Rasmus initially tried to give a very awkward no comment sort of statement that only fanned the fires even more as he didn’t deny the trade request. Since then he’s denied it, but it’s pretty clear that story was leaked by the Cards front office.

It was probably one of three possibilities for why they would intentionally leak such a damaging story: they want to send a message to Rasmus by having him deal with the consequences of his demands both in the club house and from the press, they in fact are setting up the reason for why he needs to be traded this winter, or to make La Russa look out of touch in turn making it part of why he won’t be brought back.

Very, very odd way to run a club and handle a situation.

Rasmus has long been thought of as the Cardinals future.

Hearing Pujol’s response to the Rasmus stuff made me stop and think if that made Albert a good or a bad clubhouse leader.

I decided if I had to think about it, the answer is probably not good because he expanded the story rather than squashing it.

  28. m September 5th, 2010 at 10:59 pm

    pat,

I don’t care for Pujols’ personality which is basically non-existent. He seems very smug and high & mighty.

Seems like he prefers to be the only star in the room. It’s been all-Albert all the time for a few years now.

  29. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 11:00 pm

    Just a hunch.

  30. CB September 5th, 2010 at 11:04 pm

    pat-

Pujols comments were very surprising. He’s usually not one to make issues with the press.

Just a guess – I’d say that Pujols doesn’t care much for Rasmus’ overall behavior and was putting a young player in his place. Pujols knows how much weight his words carry there. I’d guess there are some negative sentiments behind those words and the trade request just tipped Pujols over into saying something public.

There have been some strange issues with Rasmus and the cards in the past.

If the organization doesn’t want to trade him, this seems like a clear message to him that he’d better change something he’s doing.

Rasmus will clearly win a battle with La Russa in St. Louis. He has no hope of winning a battle with Pujols.

And I’d guess that why Rasmus made up the story now denying he ever asked for the trade. But there’s no way that story was just fabricated by poor reporting. Not from that paper and that reporter. That was leaked by someone, probably in the Cards FO.

  31. Yank 97 September 5th, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Then came a memorable sequence. Papelbon walked Alexi Ramirez. Dustin Richardson walked Mark Teahen. Robert Manuel walked Gordon Beckham. Then Manuel walked Juen Pierre.

Manuel and Richardson never expected to be in that game. Manuel, who is known for his control, couldn’t remember walking two batters in a row.

Tough spot for those guys, eh Pap?

“No, I don’t feel for them,” he said. “Their job is to come in and try and get outs like everybody else.”

  33. SAS September 5th, 2010 at 11:13 pm

    CB,

Thanks so much for your long, detailed explanation. I must sound like a real dope not to know who this kid is.

I have always found La Russa’s personality to be obnoxious. He should stay with the Cards in case Girardi decides on Chicago because I would want no part of him with the Yankees.

You writing is always so complete and much appreciated.

So if the question is why isn’t larussa playing rasmus more or nobody knows why larussa isn’t playing him more, doesn’t rasmus have a right too request a trade if done properly & with class?

If rasmus thinks it is in his best interest too ask for a trade,i don’t blame him but he might have gone about it in the wrong way.

It is none of pujols’s business if the kid want’s out unless rasmus wen’t about it in the wrong way,i’m guessing he did.

If pujols felt he had too leave st louis for whatever reasons i am sure he would be gone in a second.

Wouldn’t you play one of your top players everyday if you wanted to make a run for the postseason? Or give the impression that you are?

  43. CB September 5th, 2010 at 11:30 pm

“Why is TLR going to be out of St. Louis after the season? Is he no longer considered a good manager?”

He’s been there a long time. He has a huge personality and it seems like the relationship has run it’s course. All signs point to the organization and fan base being tired of him, as blake said before.

  44. pat September 5th, 2010 at 11:36 pm

“Wouldn?t you play one of your top players everyday if you wanted to make a run for the postseason? Or give the impression that you are?”

Imagine for a moment if Joba Chamberlain asked for a trade because he didn’t want to accept a spot in the bull pen?

How thrilled do you think the veterans in the clubhouse would be with him – a player with potential but one he’s achieved very little in his career.

Rasmus is still in his first full big league season.

And what Pujols said was if the Rasmus doesn’t want to be in St. Louis then he doesn’t need to be there.

It was in the vein of the Cards should only have players playing for them who want to be there.

Pujols also may have been sticking up for his manager as there have been other incidents this year and even when Rasmus was in the minors between him and the organization.

Pujols did make the incident much bigger than it was prior. But that was probably the purpose of leaking this information in the first place.

Someone in that front office was likely trying to send a very strong message to Rasmus.

  47. tyanksfan36 September 5th, 2010 at 11:40 pm

My local sports network is showing the Greatest Baseball Rivalry: Red Sox vs. Yankees. As a Tampa native, the Rays vs. Yankees rivalry is more prominent for me lately. I have been a Yankees fan since I was like 12(so about 11 yrs) from always going to ST games. No one ever bothered me about it until recently when the Rays started doing well. Now Rays fans have the audacity to taunt me and tell me to watch my back and that my Yankees suck. I don’t know who they think they are. Whenever they say stuff like that I always come back with “at least my Yankees know how to beat the phillies in the world series” the Red Sox need to sweep the Rays this week. Hopefully the Orioles are too burnt out from beating the Rays so we can sweep them.
Sorry about this random comment, I was just watching the show and thought of it.

  48. CB September 5th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

“Wouldn’t you play one of your top players everyday if you wanted to make a run for the postseason? Or give the impression that you are?”

La Russa loves to play older, marginally talented veterans. That’s just the way he is.

I think he’s benched both Rasmus and Ludwick for Randy Winn at times this year.

Ludwick had a falling out with La Russa as well over playing time. Ludwick got traded at the deadline to the pads in what seemed like a poor deal for the Cards.

La Russa gives much more leeway to older veterans than younger players. He’s had much less patience for younger players in St. Louis.

In some way I think he believes the “veteran intangibles” make the team better than playing the kid with outrageous talent.

Or he just enjoys constantly making moves so that his managerial “genius” seems like the variable that brings the club success.

There’s also evidently been problems between LaRussa and Rasmus’ father over hitting instruction. Not playing him may be a way of trying to tell Rasmus to get in line.

    Hard to know.

Remember when the yankees had the reputation of a bad clubhouse & that the younger players were not treated all that well, something along those lines?

How do we know what is going on in that clubhouse & just because pujols feels that the kid should just keep his mouth shut & accept anything & everything does not mean pujols is right.

  51. m September 5th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

    CB,

Thanks for that. He sounds high maintance, but I think there’s more to the story than we know. Maybe Rasmus’ father objected to the injections? :P

  52. CB September 6th, 2010 at 12:03 am

    ron-

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on there. Nor do I care. I have no stake in who is right or wrong.

What I was originally posting about was the leak of information.

That leak of information made Rasmus look very, very bad.

St. Louis is a huge baseball town. Player after player want to go there and stay there because they love the city and it’s baseball atmosphere. It’s a big source of pride there.

For a first year player to demand a trade is not going to go over well with that city or that clubhouse – a clubhouse that has players in it who took less money to play in St. Louis (including Pujols who signed an enormously team friendly deal last time).

Whoever leaked that information knew this was going to get a very negative reaction. That’s why the information was leaked.

My point here is that it was very predictable that the players in the St. Louis clubhouse would not be happy with a first year player trying to dictate to the organization what it should be doing.

Rasmus asked for a trade. Pujols said that if he doesn’t want to be in St. Louis he doesn’t need to be.

That wasn’t an unexpected response. That’s my point. It’s not a matter of who is right. The subject I was touching on is why would such embarrassing news be leaked in the first place by a club, especially about a young player who has long been though to be the future for that team?

So I could care less who is right or wrong. I have no idea. I’m not in the club house. But that’s not the point I was addressing as there is no evidence to judge in this situation.

But in the past I believe Rasmus has refused to play winter ball because he didn’t get a september call up. That was after he had an awful season in the minors. Rasmus’s father is a high school baseball coach who has trashed Tony La Russa publicly. Also this season Rasmus started taking hitting instructions from his father when the team told him they wanted him to work with their own hitting coach.

So who knows? I don’t. I’m not making a comment on right or wrong here. Externally it’s just a very strange situation where it’s clear someone leaked this information to make Rasmus look bad. I’m wondering why someone from the team would want to do that knowing what kind of problems it would cause the kid at the age of 24.

  53. CB September 6th, 2010 at 12:12 am

Also – and I’ve posted about this here before as this is a story I’ve been following – I really can’t believe that La Russa hasn’t been playing Rasmus everyday.

That seems remarkably short sighted and makes little sense to me. Sit Rasmus so Randy Winn can play? Ok, then Tony.

I’d guess much of this extends from La Russa’s own problems with personality and sharing the spot light with his players.

I wouldn’t want him managing a team I supported. He would be a disaster for the yankees.

Just not a good situation all around there in St. Louis either on or off the field. They have way too much talent to be 8-9 games out to the Reds.

  54. m September 6th, 2010 at 12:18 am

Maybe I’m being harsh. Let’s say that was Cano and he acted like Rasmus, I’d call for him to be benched.

  55. Nat September 6th, 2010 at 12:28 am

I haven’t been following this Rasmus thing throughout the season but it seems to me everyone else is doing all the talking. The leak, LaRussa and now Pujols. Rasmus was asked if he wanted to stay or leave and he said he’d rather not answer that. Seems to be too much talking in public from others that is the problem.

  56. Kelvin September 6th, 2010 at 12:34 am

I got rasmus side at the moment. If a trade is asked privately then it can be personal and should be kept a secret till and when if they honor your request.

Have there been any comments in this thread about the pitching matchups? Some good Yankee storylines.

AJ tries to work his way back to being a .500 pitcher.

CC makes his first attempt for his first 20-win season.

Nova tries to make it through 5 innings after his bench sulk.

And the Orioles pitchers… well, I don’t care much for them. I hope they all lose.

    Goodnight, Lohud.

  65. Yogi Mantle September 6th, 2010 at 6:58 am

Nova seems to have fairly decent pitching skills, but he isn’t economical with his pitches. In some ways he reminds me of how Joba did when he started.

That is one thing I miss about Wang. He rarely threw a lot of pitches per inning. I think his average inning was 12 pitches, iirc.

The young arms think too much about strike outs. So do the fans, but its far better to have the pitches that don’t allow balls out of the infield.

I like that Nova didn’t seem intimidated by the big league, that can help him. It would be nice to see him get a little deeper in the game though.

Kate, I think Francona was trying desperately for a win. It wasn’t the smartest move, but he had to try. I don’t think they are keeping Pimplebutt so they will ride his arm.

How is everything Upstate this morning. It is actually cool down here this morning.

To respond to what you said…I think it is awful that because the Sox are out of it, Francona is not treating his pitchers appropriately

  70. upstate kate September 6th, 2010 at 8:32 am

    SAS
it is sunny and cool, but it is the first sunny day we have had, so we will take it

  71. blake September 6th, 2010 at 8:36 am

    Morning everyone,

Interesting discussion last night on Larussa. CB is right..he would be a nightmare in with the Yankees, especially with the organizations new ways of doing things. He would overmanage the talent advantage they have right away IMO.

Girardi isn’t perfect but he does 3 things very well…he gets along with players, he has a great understanding of the “big picture” of a baseball season, and he seems to have a knack for figuring bullpens out. Really if a manager can do those 3 things then the talent the team has should do the rest. I don’t always agree with everything Girardi does but I think he’s an excellent fit for this current team and hope he’s here a long time.

  72. blake September 6th, 2010 at 8:40 am

also, has a law been passed that requires radio stations to play the eminem/Rihanna song 5 times an hour….sure seems that way.

  73. Fran the original September 6th, 2010 at 8:41 am

Good morning everyone. Happy Labor Day.

Agree with all of you about Francona yesterday. How could he leave Pappelbon in for over 50 pitches. He looses him for at least the next 2 days. Guess he is desperate.

Girardi had done an excellent job with the Yankees bullpen once again. They have become the strength of the team IMO.

  74. blake September 6th, 2010 at 8:53 am

Sox fans are growing tired of Papelbum.

As many problems as the Sox have…if you swapped him and Rivera would the Sox still be in the race? They very well could be and that’s how important and what a security blanket Mo is.

  75. Joe from Long Island September 6th, 2010 at 8:54 am

    Good morning-

Just catcghing up. That was a fascinating discussion about the situation in St. Louis, last night. A total mess for all parties, including the Cardinal fans. I’ve long had the impression that LaRussa is in love with his own genius. The book, Three days in August absolutely left me with that.

Blake – Based solely on my following the Yanks and the press, I think you’re right about Girardi being a good fit here. He’s loyal, and gives guys a chance, but his rope is only so long.

  76. Noreaster September 6th, 2010 at 8:57 am

Fran, The sox left Pappelbon in yesterday because they pitched Barid the night before when they were losing. I’ve read up here that they are thinking of starting Laptop on short rest for the Rays. They are desperate. It’s all coming to an end, they aren’t even second in the wild card race anymore.

  77. Fran the original September 6th, 2010 at 8:58 am

O/T for any of you Jet fans, Revis is back. He signed a new 4 year contract.

  78. SAS September 6th, 2010 at 8:58 am

LaRussa reminds me of a “slime bag”. He gives me the creeps so I just wish him away from the Yanks.

You know when Francona plays the Yankees, it will be as though he is in the World Series against us. I just don’t know why a manager would abuse his closer even if they don’t plan to have him back next year.

  79. Fran the original September 6th, 2010 at 9:00 am

Noreaster, I have to admit I was worried about the Sox. But I do see now that they are desperate and although they are not officially eliminiated yet, I do think it is over for them.

  80. Noreaster September 6th, 2010 at 9:01 am

  81. Noreaster September 6th, 2010 at 9:03 am

I’m always worried about the Sox since they came back from the dead in 2004. They made a nice little run in July, but aside from that they have been a .500 club. Hopefully they can help us out with the Rays this week.

  82. upstate kate September 6th, 2010 at 9:09 am

hard as it will be, I am going to have to root for the sox to beat the rays

  83. Wave Your Hat September 6th, 2010 at 9:09 am

Who knows what goes on behind the scenes in any clubhouse, but:

    1. The Cardinals are out of it, and fans are unhappy.

    2. One of the Cardinals best players on both sides of the ball, Colby Rasmus, hasn’t been playing. Instead, a rather motley crew of players has been taking at bats from him.

    3. The Cards and LaRussa, particularly LaRussa, having been taking a lot of heat from the combination of the points 1 and 2 above.

    4. (I’m guessing) LaRussa and Pujols are close.

    5. All of a sudden, a two month old trade demands becomes public, Pujols blasts Rasmus and the conversation changes.

    Hmmm….

  84. MTU September 6th, 2010 at 9:10 am

    Kate-

Same here. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

  85. SAS September 6th, 2010 at 9:10 am

    Off Any Topic,

Just was watching the Today Show, and either the show or a commercial was about the new school year, and I couldn’t help but think about new notebooks, sharp pencils and pens. Everything brand new. There was something special about that.

  86. MTU September 6th, 2010 at 9:12 am

    WYH-

If the Cards no longer want Rasmus we’ll take him. ;)

  87. SAS September 6th, 2010 at 9:13 am

We have to do what we have to do as far as winning so we have to root against the Rays whoever they play.

  88. Wave Your Hat September 6th, 2010 at 9:13 am

    MTU-

I believe I saw some rumors that Boston was interested in him.

  89. Fran the original September 6th, 2010 at 9:14 am

Kate and MTU-count me in too.

SAS – I used to love going shopping with my mother for school supplies at the beginning of the school year and picking out a new pencil case and a new book bag.

  90. MTU September 6th, 2010 at 9:16 am

    WYH-

That would not be good. :(

  91. MTU September 6th, 2010 at 9:19 am

Not counting any chickens but with a little luck we might find ourselves up another game or two over the Rays.

Hope AJ comes up big today.

    Catch you all later.

  92. SAS September 6th, 2010 at 9:23 am

Should we be able to sweep the O’s, which is by no means a given, that would chop 3 games off the schedule and put some important games in the win column.

  93. blake September 6th, 2010 at 9:33 am

I’d love a sweep but would be fine with 2 of 3 against the O’s. They have been playing much better and its tough to sweep any series. Matusz is a good young pitcher but the Yanks have faired pretty well against him this year…hopefully thatll continue and AJ will throw a good game and get headed in the right direction.

  94. MaineYankee September 6th, 2010 at 9:36 am

    School supplies=nightmare.

  95. upstate kate September 6th, 2010 at 9:37 am

Peter Gammons has a very complimentary article on CC at mlb.com
sorry I don’t know how to link

He talks about how good CC is both on and off the field

  96. SAS September 6th, 2010 at 9:39 am

    Maine Yankee,

Maybe getting all new stuff was a girl thing. I even liked covering my books.

  97. SJ44 September 6th, 2010 at 9:40 am

    Pujols and LaRussa are close.

Rasmus has had a bad rep for years. Has an entitlement complex.

When he played in A Ball, he regularly got in fights with teammates and his dad really gave the coaching staff a hard time.

As far as Boston having interest in him, they will have their name attached to any good player in the off-season since they have to rebuild that team and the upper end FA pickings are slim.

Their problem? As with Adrian Gonzalez, they simply don’t have the upper end prospects to do that kind of deal.

They aren’t trading Clay Buchholz and scouts aren’t as in love with Casey Kelly as Baseball America.

It’s going to be interesting to see how they go about re-constructing their team in the off-season.

  98. pat September 6th, 2010 at 9:44 am

“I believe I saw some rumors that Boston was interested in him.”

But do they have the necessary pieces to get him or would someone else have more to offer?

  99. Yanksgal07 September 6th, 2010 at 9:44 am

Happy Labor Day to everyone….I’m off to the game in a little while. Here’s hoping the “good” AJ shows up and starts the Yanks on a new winning streak.

    Go Yankees 2010 !!!

  100. Guru Man September 6th, 2010 at 9:45 am

Rich in NJ, I don’t think any two people took more abuse about Gardner this off season than you and I. We through out every stat we could and all we heard was he should be traded and was not an upgrade over what we had. I remember people laughing when I said even if Gardner didn’t improve and had an OPS of .720 he would be more valuable than Damon because of his better defense and SB’s. Rich you were the only other person who stood taking the hits with me! I still don’t think people realize how much his defense has saved us. BTW, Damon has an OPS of .743 and still is weak in the OF. Not counting Gardner’s 40 SB’s and his stellar defense, his OPS is .782 and he actually has more RBI’s than Damon.

  101. RhapsodyInBlue September 6th, 2010 at 9:48 am

It’s going to be a fun off season watching the Sox trying to remake themselves.

They are regretting the long term deals given to Beckett and Lackey.

    The pen is in shambles.

  102. SJ44 September 6th, 2010 at 9:50 am

    Pat,

    They don’t.

The Cardinals aren’t going to give Cody Rasmus away if they decide to trade him and Ellsbury et al, isn’t going to get it done.

My guess? Once LaRussa is gone after this year, they will find a way to make it work in St. Louis.
