Winning streak ends in Blue Jays series finale

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 05, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Snapping a season-high eight-game winning streak, the Yankees lost 7-3 in their series finale against the Blue Jays this afternoon. Starter Phil Hughes seemed to solve the walks problem that plagued his past two outings, but he once again had trouble putting hitters away. Hughes allowed three home runs, two of them on 0-2 pitches. Every Yankees starting position player reached base, but they managed only scattered run production, never scoring more than one run in an inning.

Hard to have any chance of coming back when the umpires are more concerned with going home than getting the calls right. Some terrible strike calls in that 9th inning on A-Rod.

  2. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 5th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

that was NOT a strike …typical Ump wants to go home call….4 inches inside AT LEAST !,,,,umps need to be accountable for BS calls like that !…..27 outs is what you need….NOT 26 and a pitch EASILY inside for the last out….BALONEY !

“Tricia, I rather they win the AL East , so they have home field and rather than going on the road to face the Twins or Texas……I still think they’ll win the division and will be up by 3 games when they clinch……”

Pat M, excellent point. I’m with you.

Papeldone pitching to Manny. Ah the drama!

  4. ZMAN September 5th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Why did Francona take out the better pitcher, Bard, to put in the inferior pitcher, Papelbon?

  5. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 5th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

1st pitched called a strike in the A-Rod AB was an even WORSE call than the last….complete idiot ! (the ump)

  6. Ruby Tuesday September 5th, 2010 at 4:32 pm

    Streak ends.

    It is all A-Rod’s fault.

PAPELDONE HIT MANNY WITH A PITCH!!!!!

  8. JobaTipsHisCap September 5th, 2010 at 4:34 pm

at least we win a series over TOR

  9. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

What is Francona doing bringing in Paps with only 1 out in the 8th? 5 out attempted save?

Is this part of the long kiss goodbye for Paps?

  10. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I would say that’s how desperate they are to win a game. They still think they’re in the hunt.

  11. m September 5th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I was wondering why I was all alone in the last thread.

    Trisha,

Baldelli did PH. But Brignac PH behind him. Brignac is the one that hit the HR.

The Red Sox fans really wanted Manny punched out. The incredulous looks were pretty funny.

Hopefully, the Orioles can hold on.

  12. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

    m -

I don’t want to go back and read the game thread; I suspect it’s nasty. I don’t need anyone to tell me it was disappointing. :(

I heard Manny had a barber in the clubhouse, but no one can tell whether or not he got a haircut. I believe Manny thinks if he got “A” hair cut, he’s followed the rules…

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

mel, Baldelli also homered in the game.

  14. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

In the hunt for early October tee times, maybe.

  15. igotid88 September 5th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

My first loss at the new stadium with Hughes. I guess everything was pointing to a loss today.

  16. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

We begged you not to go, igotid88, but you didn’t listen.

You were obviously pushing your luck!

    It’s ok, it’s not like I wanted a tasty In-N-Out meal today….

  17. m September 5th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

    Trisha,

looking at it again, baldelli did HR. I swear it was brignac the first two times I checked.

    You were correct. :)

  18. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Nick, you ARE a funny bahstid!!!

    :D

  19. igotid88 September 5th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

The bleacher creatures were giving it to Wells and he was giving it back. It was funny. First he made a dirt off my shoulders move. Then he bent over and did something regarding his buttocks. Either to kiss it or I’m not sure. I wish I had recorded it.

  20. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

mel, not a problem. I had to go from CBS to MLB to totally figure it out! CBS has a very strange setup. If you look at their lineup it would appear that Baldelli started the game.

  21. m September 5th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    Doreen,

    You are so clever!

The rule must be that you name must be visible because he had pulled together on the right shoulder.

  22. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    igotid88 -

I feel awful – I saw last night that you posted you were going to today’s game and I didn’t tell you to have a great time and I almost always do that whenever someone posts they’re going to a game. :(

It was such a beautiful day. A win would have been lovely. 2 of 3 from Toronto isn’t terrible, though. I see Cano had a day off. He needed it. So, tomorrow Baltimore is in town? Hope they’re all tuckered out from the Rays.

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Think I’ll leave beantown and go to Baltimore. It’s the top of the 9th and I want to see the O’s fans joy at beating the Rays yet again.

    YOU GO O’S! YOU GO!!!

  24. SJ44 September 5th, 2010 at 4:54 pm

    Tampa lost.

    No harm day.

Yankees now have a fully rested pen and Arod back for the stretch run.

I hope the Red Sox can find life for three days against the Rays.

Then they can go back to playing out the string! lol

  25. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:54 pm

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uehara struck out Zobrist and Longoria to end the game!!!!

I know the Dodgers’ rule was that your name had to be visible. I’m not certain what the Tigers’ rule is. I read in the paper this morning that the owner has a rule for the players to have “short hair.” I guess that’s not clear enough?

    Are the Orioles still winning?

  27. m September 5th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

The Baltimore fans really got into that inning. The must get a little satisfaction of beating the former cellar dwellar.

  28. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

    trisha -

You’re one step ahead of me. Orioles win??? Yeah! (Just for today, yeah.)

  29. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

How can you not feel good for the Orioles! What a great story. This was a team full of talent and just languishing. Buck shows up and they turn things around. I LOVE IT!

They’re in our division. They’re part of us.

I love seeing their pitchers really showing off their skills and their hitters giving them run support.

    :) :) :)

  30. m September 5th, 2010 at 4:57 pm

    Doreen,

    It’s the White Sox. :)

  31. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 4:58 pm

    Thank you, Trisha.

Doreen is right… it’s our fault, collectively, for not wishing igotid88 a good time at the game… I thought of it even today but didn’t do it.

It’s pretty much just like when Peter Parker could have stopped that petty criminal but didn’t bother and then the same crook killed Peter’s kindly old Uncle Ben.

With great power comes great responsibility.

  32. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

How did ARod look today? I know he got a hit and an RBI because they mentioned in when I watched the bottom of the 9th. But how did he look? Comfortable?

    Was Mitre ineffective?

How long did Hughes pitch? then Mitre? Anyone come in besides Albaladejo?

(I just want the quick facts – don’t want to sludge through the game thread. Thanks. ;) )

  33. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

    m -

Duh! That’s right. The White Sox. Who cares what the Tigers’ policy is!!!! (I get those two teams confused all the time – uniforms similar, maybe? They’re both in the central? Who knows!)

So maybe Manny’s confused too? Maybe he thinks he’s in Detroit?

  34. waka flocka September 5th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Every time Berkman comes to the plate I cringe. If Thames takes over the DH role for the rest of the way I wouldn’t complain.

  35. m September 5th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

    Doreen,

    Manny was born confused.

  36. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Well, paps is trashed for tomorrow’s game against TB. But they need this win. You know, if they’re going to catch TB. Haha.

  39. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Doreen, Hughes was rather mixed. Really good stuf and made 3 mistake and it cost him 5 runs. Movement on most pitches, but still made 2 strike and 2 out mistakes.

Rodriguez had a 2-4 with an RBI. One hit was an infield roller to 3rd. 1 strikeout and 2 soft infield outs.

  40. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

    trisha -

I’m noticing you’re use of the name “Papeldone” and it reminded me of something slightly amusing that happened at lunch today.

I don’t know if you’re aware that we’re having an issue with my daughter and the Red Sox. Long story short, “Laptops” is married to one of the models on “Deal or No Deal” – a favorite show of hers – and so she now follows the Red Sox a little. Anyhoo, my husband was challenging her – how can you be a RS fan – tell us who plays right field. She couldn’t tell us, but the amusing part is that all I could think of was “Nancy Drew.” I told my husband and we both started cracking up. (Well, we had sangria with lunch) and he said, no, not Nancy Drew, J.D. Salinger.

  41. Carl September 5th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

    lol Pap fail.

  42. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Hueghes with 6 innings, only 1 walk. Mitre had a bad 1st inning and a good 1.2 innings.

    Fixed!

  46. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Of everything that came out of today’s game, the best was Rodriguez running pretty well the first day back.

  47. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

    GB7 -

Thanks. that sounds like a pretty good day for Alex. Sounds like Hughes needs to learn how to make less costly mistakes. :?

  48. Carl September 5th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I guess they are stretching pap out to start again.

  49. m September 5th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    Doreen,

To add to GB7′s comments, Hughes went 6 innings. Went to 0-2 on all three HRs ( per Chad).

And in other news, Gardner was on base 3 times.

What is Tito doing? Papelbon was cooked a long time ago. Doesn’t bode well for him if they don’t care about his arm. He gone.

  50. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    Doreen – that’s a great story!!! :D

The team that brings us such joy!

And not for nothing, but have you seen the thing he’s married to? She looks like a transvestite! She may have a great body but a face that would stop a clock!!!

Wow, Papeldone being pulled. Of course NESN cuts to a fast commercial so I don’t get to hear the fenway booing.

You know fenway, the place where the games are sold out for the next 500 years? Well on EEI they’re advertising where you can get tickets for games starting at $19.

Does that mean the rats are jumping off the sinking ship?

    :)

  51. Nick in SF September 5th, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Papelfreude: joy in the failing of Paps regardless of the game’s outcome.

  52. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

That may be the most irritating with Hughes right now. He makes the same mistake to the same hitters on the same pitch, over and over. He did a great job on Bautista, though.

  53. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Sounds like they know what’s coming on 0-2.

  54. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

All fastballs, Doreen. A real pity because he threw a good amount of change-ups and almost all were outstanding. Homers on fastballs down the middle.

  55. SJ44 September 5th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

Hughes threw the ball better today than he has in his last three starts.

    His problem was tactics.

Throwing 0-2 fastballs has hurt him this year, especially against the Blue Jays and it killed him today.

He cleans up that part of his game and he will be fine.

  56. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I think that even throwing fastballs that were up and in a little, they wouldn’t have a chance. Always middle and knees to waist high

  57. m September 5th, 2010 at 5:27 pm

    Doreen,

The advantage of having Molina on the bench? :)

Wells got a fastball. Hill got a cutter.

Hill scored on a close play at the plate sac fly.

Buck knocked a first pitch cutter out of the park.

    All charged to Hughes.

  58. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:28 pm

    SJ44/GB7 -

The way I see it is at least they know what the “problem” (for lack of a better word) is and it is something that can be cleaned up.

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

The poor relief pitcher who had to walk into that mess just walked in the lead run.

Papeldone in the dugout looking very grim.

This is going to be a mighty uncomfortable postgame for Tito, no matter what.

    I blame Ruby Tuesday…

  61. Rich in NJ September 5th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

I still think that Hughes is fatigued but should gain a second wind soon.

  62. igotid88 September 5th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

    It’s nobody’s fault but mine.

  63. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 5th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

  64. m September 5th, 2010 at 5:31 pm

What an at-bat by Castro. Worked it to 3-2. Fouled a bunch of pitches. Then walked in a run.

  65. Doreen September 5th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Plus they play the Blue Jays too darn much. :(

  66. JM September 5th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Who is this Sox pitcher, Robert Manuel? He has just walked in two runs.

  67. SJ44 September 5th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    Doreen,

    His issues are all correctable.

It’s the growing pains every young pitcher goes thru as they learn to become more complete pitchers.

His velocity and stuff was very good today.

So was his command for the most part.

Two dumb pitches cost him 4 runs.

Just a turn the page game.

Another one of the Red Sox famed “prospects” just walked in two runs.

I just hope they show up the next three days against the Rays.

Let the “Little Engine That Could” play spoiler for the Rays.

  68. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

“Papelfreude: joy in the failing of Paps regardless of the game’s outcome.”

    :D

Holy good God. Another run walked in. Look I don’t know their relief pitcher enough to feel any glee at his expense. I do have a heart. I would have preferred for Papeldone to have been left in to take responsibility for all of the damage.

Derisive cheer for a strike thrown by the Sux reliever. (Haven’t been paying close enough attention to know who it is. None of the regulars though)

I blame Ruby Tuesday for all of it!

  69. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Hughes isn’t “tired”. He’s done the same thing for a while. He’s more stubborn than tired. He, forever picked up some Chamberlain stubborness along the way.

    Sure seems like it.

  75. SJ44 September 5th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

    He’s not fatigued.

His stuff was crisp and command was solid.

When you are fatigued both your stuff and command drops off. That wasn’t the case today.

He threw some excellent changeups and CB’s. Pitches that fatigue wouldn’t allow him to throw effectively.

His issue is one of tactics.

Shook off Jorge twice to throw an 0-2 fastball to Wells. Can’t do that.

He has to trust his secondary pitches enough to throw them when he is ahead in the count.

If he doesn’t, good hitters pickup his pattern, as Wells has done for example, sit dead red, and take too good a swing on 0-2 pitches.

  76. Tank September 5th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

“Wasn’t this like the 100th time Jays faced Hughes?”

3rd time this year. However, all 3 of his starts against them have come in the last calender month.

  77. Carl September 5th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Colby Rasmus may be on the block.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....jols090510

  78. Yogi Mantle September 5th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Despite the results, Hughes didn’t pitch as poorly as he did the last couple of games.

I still don’t believe that the Jays have increased their power hitting just by being aggressive. If that were the case every team would become more aggressive.

Meanwhile a game comes off the schedule and the Rays didn’t pick up anything. The RS are now trailing after the WS rallied against Pimplebutt. Overall not too bad for the Yanks.

  79. GreenBeret7 September 5th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Manuel is much like Albaladejo. Manuel pitched well in AA and AAA but a real soft tosser. He’s not as good as his numbers indicate and neither is Albaladejo.

  84. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2010 at 5:46 pm

I don’t want to get preachy here but common sense should have told people that a team playing without two of their top defensive/offensive players and their table setter, plus a rotation that THROUGHOUT THE SEASON featured two pitchers who were able to win games out of their entire rotation – common sense should have told you it was a dead team walking the entire time.

But nooooooo. Betsy insisted they were the real deal and the more faint of heart danced to that drum!

For future reference – PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT I SAY ABOUT THE SUX! I AM A SUX EXPERT!!!
