Yankees playing it safe with A-Rod
Joe Girardi said he’s strictly playing it safe with Alex Rodriguez.
He hasn’t seen anything to cause alarm, but given the fact there were no rehab games to ease Rodriguez in, Girardi didn’t feel comfortable playing him four games in a row. He decided to give him today off, and Rodriguez might get another day in either Texas or Tampa.

Sounds like a good plan.

CC on 3 days?
He didn’t feel comfortable playing him 4 (FOUR) days in a row? Did he actually play a secret game between sunday and monday that we didn’t know about? Or maybe Alex played a doubles game with Roger Federer last night at the US Open?

He’s including tomorrow’s game. He didn’t want him playing Sunday through Wednesday with no break.
cntg – he said 4 games in a row… learn to read.
People are really going to complain about Girardi playing it safe with A-Rod shortly after returning from the DL?
Really?

Absolutely. That is one of the major advantages the big man brings to the Yankees.

ID – four days or 4 games – either way there have only been 2 days/games since he was activated on sunday – sunday and monday – today makes the 3rd day/game he would have played
so either way today would have made ONLY 3 games/days so regardless of my reading comprehension my math skills are top notch!!

Good day at work?

I like Andy Game 3. Split the lefties up. Give the road game to your most seasoned vet.
And if you think Girardi is not going to use CC on short rest, I don’t know what to tell you. The only reason they didnt use 4 starters last year was because they only needed to pitch CC on short rest, this year you’d have to pitch another starter short to use 3.
Great decision to rest Alex, especially with CC pitching. No need to rush Alex back.
the way the playoff schedule is this year, i dont think a 3 man rotation would be possible
CR9 has a good point….
plus, the batting order looks pretty good, anyway.
Plus, the lads keep winning, without Al
Just me, though, I woulda played Fast Eddie instead of El Nino…

It has been a pretty good day. Only 15 more minutes and I’m out of here!! I’ve been really busy, which made the time go by really fast.
Glad to hear you had a good day (considering it’s a Fake Monday).
I just cant believe that the playoff schedule last year benefited us in terms of us using only 3 pitchers, so MLB immediately had to make changes to the system, just so we couldnt get take advantage of the schedule.
If that doesnt go to show the anti-Yankee bias, I dont know what does.

but heres something to think about – if the yankees win tonight do you sit alex again tomorrow and give him 2 extra days of rest? after all the only 2 games they’ve lost in the last 2 weeks are when alex played….hmmm???

Nevermind, I can believe it. I just cant believe that nobody else sees it!

Why is that? CC on short rest is a much better option than AJ. CC’s ability to pitch on short rest is one of things that separates the Yankees starting staff and gives them an advantage over every other team in the playoffs.
CC should be pitching as often as possible in the playoffs whether that means he is going on 3 or 4 days rest.
JackCurryYES ARod told me he fought Girardi on being benched tonight, but lost the argument.
The Yankees should definitely look into using a 3 man staff in the postseason with Javy on backup duty.
They only have to pitch Andy on short rest twice (depending on duration of series) and Hughes once.

___
For once i have to agree with you CR9. This wasnt an issue when it wasnt the yankees that got to choose, but the year the yankees take advantage and win, suddenly it is a bad rule and is done away with?
That being said, there is no way they could predict the yankees would have the best record again and get to choose which schedule they want again.
Hughes at home g3 WS, don’t see it esp vs Philly. Short porch, lousy home record.
Andy on the road 2.36
Andy at home 3.27
Andy pitching in game 2 allows him to pitch more often than he would if he pitches game 3.
Do you want Hughes/AJ to make 2 starts in the ALDS or Andy?
Game 3 is not more special than game 2. You want your 2 best pitchers pitching as often as possible and that is CC + Andy.
CC 3x on short rest in the WS?
Andy 2x on short rest?
Abusive.
Girardi never loses those arguments.

***************
You think Philly is going to the Series?
If CC wins g 1 then you can go with AJ at home g2.
At 1-1 I want Andy, not AJ
MY 2 cents
in the ALDS – you pitch CC in game 4 if the yankees are down 2-1 – if they are up 2-1 you save him for game 5 if necessary (at YS no less)
Same with the ALCS and WS – if you are up 2-1 you start your 4th starter and hope for a win while also giving CC an extra day rest
if you are down 2-1 then you pitch CC in game #4 and hope for a game 7 where he can pitch again on 3 days rest
Erica, a rematch, yes, this will be tougher.
JackCurryYES ARod said that Girardi was being “cautious” by giving him tonight off. ARod said calf is fine
mickster,
Under that scenario AJ is pitching a potential game 5. If the series goes to 5 games AJ Burnett will be deciding if the Yankees are going home to play golf.
That is a nightmare scenario for me.
CC 3x on short rest in the WS?
Andy 2x on short rest?
Abusive.
–
Andy only goes once on short rest in the WS, and CC only goes on short rest 3 times if you take the ALCS to 7 games. And even still, you’re in the world series. There is no more ‘saving it’. You empty all barrels.
in the ALDS – you pitch CC in game 4 if the yankees are down 2-1 – if they are up 2-1 you save him for game 5 if necessary (at YS no less)
–
If you do that you muck with the ALCS rotation. CC pitching an ALDS game 5 means there is only 2 days rest between Game 5 and Game 1 of the ALCS.,
Cashman needs to go,
Then you are putting CC’s ALCS game 1 start in jeopardy. Starting CC in game 4 of the ALDS allows you to set up the rest of the postseason so he can make 3 starts in a 7 game series. If he starts game 5, then you cannot do that and you mess up the rest of the schedule.
CC starting 3 games in both 7 game series gives the Yankees the best chance to win the WS. He is by far their best pitcher and should be pitching as often as possible.
cntg – i wouldn’t make any decisions based on the yankees winning or losing. if arod is healthy, he should be playing, if they brought him back too early (which is… obvious at this point) then any extra rest he can get is warranted. if we had more than just CC pitching well(where we should not need alex to win a game), i’d peg a few other days where he could be easily rested.
You also have to consider that the best pitcher in the League series not named CC won’t pitch on short rest. You have to maximize the amount of times CC pitches to minimize the amount of times Cliff Lee pitches.
erica – there’s no reason to believe any other NL team will. the braves for all they’ve done well this year don’t have the depth to win a long series, the reds and padres are a joke… the phillies make the WS by default with their rotation/lineup.

Except their line up is continuously mired in slumps.
Roy Halladay for all of his wizardry gets terrible run support.
I really think the NL pennant could be a coin flip with no real favorite
Jerkface-
The Yankees last game is in Boston, Sunday Oct. 3rd. Hopefully the Yankees will have won their division before this 3 game series, so they can set up their rotation, but there are no guarantees that there won’t be a one game playoff with Tampa, as Tampa finishes the season with 10 sub 500 teams.
Looking at the weather in Minneapolis in early October the highs are low 60′s the lows, low 40′s. If we play them, it’s highly unlikely, especially if it’s a night game that any of our starters would go on 3 days rest.
IMHO, the best scenario, is that everyone is healthy, Pettitte is back to form, we win the division with the best record, and open up in YS with our two lefties.
I just cant believe that the playoff schedule last year benefited us in terms of us using only 3 pitchers, so MLB immediately had to make changes to the system, just so we couldnt get take advantage of the schedule.
If that doesnt go to show the anti-Yankee bias, I dont know what does.
————-
Because Mike Socascia complained
I’d punt any potential 1 game playoff. No use messing with the playoff rotation just for 1 extra home game.
If all 3 postseason series goes it full length there will be 19 games.
Starting CC-Andy back to back and going with Jerkface’s schedule allows those 2 to start 14 of the 19 games.
CC and Andy can start 74% of our postseason games. You don’t start Andy in game 2 or don’t go to CC on short rest that and % will significantly decrease.
but there are no guarantees that there won’t be a one game playoff with Tampa, as Tampa finishes the season with 10 sub 500 teams.
————-
That only comes into play if there are two teams battling for one spot, no?
I think if we are tied with TAM, whoever won the season series gets the division with the other getting the WC
Eroc is correct,
We once won the division due to season schedule against Boston in 05 or 06.
That only comes into play if there are two teams battling for one spot, no?
I think if we are tied with TAM, whoever won the season series gets the division with the other getting the WC
—————————–
That is correct. Happened with the Yankees and Boston in 2005. Yankees won the season series so they took the division Boston took the WC. Both lost in the first round of the playoffs.
I like AJ in a potential game 5.
I also like bathing with a lot of electrical appliances balanced on the tub.
I hope A-Rod plays all 3 of the Texas series. He hits well there. It’s going to get harder for him to reach 30.
The Yankees won the WS last year because they had their 4 best pitchers pitch about 90% of the available innings. CC, Andy, Mariano, and AJ.
We need that same formula this year.
No playoff with Tampa.
They can have a playoff with the surging Sox.
Except without AJ obviously. But we need to give the majority of the innings to CC, Andy, Mariano, and then Hughes / Logan / Robertson
If we tie with TB,there might not be a playoff game for 1st place. There are tiebreakers like head to head and division.
erica – well, you can expect the best lineup in the NL to continue to slump (and they haven’t been, they lost utley and howard to injuries… that does not really qualify as slumping) or you can expect them to revert to form (safer bet). they still run out the best top 3 starters in the league every series.
… or you can bet on the braves, with 2 real starters(hudson, hanson), 1 semi decent starter in lowe, and a trio of young players performing above expectations…
… or you can bet on the reds… taking the long odds i guess…
… or you can bet on the padres, who just cleaned up a 10 game losing streak and have nothing but unproven starters and batters. best bullpen in the league? sure, but you have to get to it. it takes more than latos.
i’ll take the phillies.
If CC doesn’t pitch on 3 days rest throughout the playoffs something is wrong…
Hughes at home g3 WS, don’t see it esp vs Philly. Short porch, lousy home record.
———-
If Hughes’ problems are because of the long ball, wouldn’t he have this same problem pitching on the road in Philly? Or even Arlington/U.S. Cellular?
Another reason to want the Twins – our starters get to pitch in Target Field.

CC has pitched well on short rest, Andy has not. I could be wrong, but, I believe Girardi will go with either Javy or AJ as the #2 starter. Let’s see how the season plays out, that should answer a lot of questions. I would be quite surprised if Andy was asked to pitch on short rest.

4 Tampa @home
3 Boston @ home
3 @ Toronto
3 @ Boston
Tampa’s last 14:
4@ NY
3 Seattle @ home
3 Orioles @ home
4 @ KC
The Yankees will be playing against major leaguers while the last 10 games for the Rays will be against AAA players getting a taste of the bigs.
Yes, Mike Scioscia complained because the schedule benefited us. If the schedule benefited them or the Red Sox, Scioscia wouldnt have complained. You can guarantee that.
Fact is, who the heck is Mike Scioscia anyways. MLB would have done it anyways – regardless of whether Scioscia complained or not. MLB only does what MLB wants to do – and that is detriment the Yankees.
YT
Did you see RS lineup last night?
mick,
Terrible
That messes up the rest of the schedule for the playoffs, because CC can’t start game 1 of the ALCS. That means way too much AJ.
CC is pitching on short rest in the ALDS.
You are formulating a schedule in which one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball this season is pitching a significant amount of innings in the playoffs. That is not a recipe for success.
The schedule does favor Tampa, but, if the Yankees take care of business head to head, then it’s all but over.
Best Case Scenario=Sweep the ALDS.
CC,AJ,Andy,Phil,CC
–
Then you can’t pitch CC 3 times in the ALCS and WS.
Why do you think MLB wants to have that MLB/Japan Series after the World Series.
WHY?
Because the Red Sox have ZERO chance of ever catching the Yankees in World Championships. They will always be second-class or third-class – or better yet, low-class.
So MLB wants a new championship to be created so that way the Red Sox can hold the record for some title, even if it is just a made up meaningless title – like the waste of time WBC.
You start AJ in game 2 of the ALDS and he is looking at pitching potentially 5 games in the playoffs.
26% of our postseason games could be started by one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season. That makes me
After the ALDS you will need 4 SP’s, who do you go to, who ever is best at that time. Afterr CC, it’s been a gamble. If Andy comes back strong, then things will be much better, if not, pray for 2 days of rain after CC pitches.
AJ and his 5.17 ERA, 6.34 ERA in his last 20+ starts going up in Game 2?
Against CJ Wilson (2.88 ERA), Pavano (3.52 ERA), Gavin Floyd (2.35 ERA since June), or Oswalt (2.30 ERA since being traded)?
Why do we want to start a replacement-level pitcher in game 2 of the playiffs? The best shot to win is to go CC on short rest.
You can’t go with CC on 3 days the entire post season, you will kill him.
mick-
I just looked at the lineup, Navarro in for an injured Scutaro and Anderson playing for Lowell. The rest have been the same group filling in for their lost for the season players. Still would rather face KC the last series instead of Boston in Boston.
Doreen,
Thanks for the Holy Cannoli speech. We are all way ahead of ourselves.
Do the Yankees pitch 2 lefties back to back?
I’d be more concerned facing the Jays the last 3 games away than the Red Sox.
Between Hughes, AJ and Javy and Nova, if he stays hot, you have options.
It is desperation to start CC on 3 days throughout the playoffs and WS.
Not every start is on 3 days rest. Look at Jerkface’s schedule.
new thread
Pregame notes
AJ will get his chance this month in the remaining games against playoff teams Tampa and Texas, and against a slugging team Toronto, and probably Boston.
Although I have little faith in him, he’s got 4, maybe 5 more starts to earn his bloated salary.
