Yankees pregame
Brian Heyman here for Chad today at Yankee Stadium. So Phil Hughes is having his turn skipped. Dustin Moseley will start Sunday in Texas and Hughes will go again next Wednesday at Tampa Bay. It’s all about the innings limit. Hughes is at 155.1. The speculation all along has been a limit in the 170-175 range. So he’s hopeful that he will be able to make his final three starts after this. Hughes didn’t fight it when Joe Girardi told him.
“There was nothing I could say,” Hughes said. “It’s not worth the fight. They have a plan in mind.”
The last time this happened, Hughes came back and struggled in the next start. Since he has been a little off of late, he’s hopeful this break will help get him back into rhythm. Actually, he will also be available for an inning out of the pen his weekend. …
Girardi said Alfredo Aceves will not be back this season. He’s being evaluated by a doctor again for this back problem that has sidelined him since May. Girardi said Aceves didn’t feel good after his last rehab outing, and that surgery could be an option.
Girardi also said Damaso Marte probably won’t be back this season. The lefty was very useful out of the pen in the postseason last year. But his shoulder is still problematic. Marte hasn’t given up on October, but he said it’s some sort of a labrum issue and that he feels he’s just at 40 percent.
“It’s very hard for me,” Marte said. “I don’t know what I have in my shoulder. I feel sore.” …
Andy Pettitte is excited to get out and pitch tomorrow for Trenton vs. New Hamphire in Game 2 of the Eastern League playoffs. He’s still not sure if it will do another rehab start. He also isn’t sure if there will be any minor league games left for one, either. …
Girardi plans to mostly platoon Marcus Thames and Lance Berkman at DH. Berkman was originally down as the DH for this game, but then Girardi put him at first and made Mark Teixeira the DH.
Here’s the Orioles’ lineup:
1. Brian Roberts 2B
2. Nick Markakis RF
3. Ty Wigginton 1B
4. Luke Scott DH
5. Felix Pie LF
6. Adam Jones CF
7. Matt Wieters C
8. Cesar Izturis SS
9. Josh Bell 3B
Brad Bergesen P

For all the complaining that goes on in the media and on the blog when guys get days off or half days off, I’m very happy with how Girardi runs his club.
These guys are million dollar investments, why risk anyone getting injured when we have the ability to give guys a bit of rest before the real season begins? Guys like Tex, Arod, Jorgie and Jeter will benefit the most.
The only beef I have about Girardi giving days off to players is when he seems to sit a couple of them at the same time, or couples it with Posada getting his usual day off. Taking two bigger bats or more out of the lineup at the same time is tough to cover for.
I apologize if someone already posted this.
How Buck Showalter dealt with a media member he wasn’t happy with.
http://keitholbermann.mlblogs......alter.html
Shame
Im happy with the way Girardi runs the club as well. He keeps all the guys fresh while still winning ballgames at a high rate.
I’m not one to lineup complain but unless Tex is banged up, I don’t understand taking one of your best defenders off the field with a rookie pitcher on the mound in a game you really need to win…especially with an off day tomorrow.
I agree in general with giving players occassional days off, but unless Tex is hurting a little, I think it’s really not necessary to sit him today with tomorrow being an off day.
I like how fans from their comforts of their computer keyboard can tell whether a player needs a day off or not.
Berkman at DH and Tex at 1st was the right move, hope Lance’s less than Tex-actular defense doesn’t hurt us today.
Since I am going to the Yankee-Ranger game on Saturday, I am curious who is pitching. MLB.com had said Hughes would pitch, but that is out the window. I just hope it doesn’t turn out to be Lee vs. Moseley. It is reported Lee would pitch either Saturday or Sunday.
Of course! They held Lee back to face us, lol. Why is Hughes pitching on Saturday out the window? Are they skipping him?

Of course no one can tell if he *needs* a day off, that’s why they said things like “***if*** Tex is not hurting…”
Derek’s NYC home just put on the market. Should we read something into that or not?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09.....38;emc=rss
Isn’t Burnett scheduled for Saturday? Vazquez, Burnett, and Moseley in Texas. Then CC, Nova, and Hughes in Tampa.
Hughes is skipped until next Wednesday in Tampa. In Texas it will be Burnett, Vazquez and Moseley.
pat – yeah, he doesn’t want to pay NY taxes anymore,

Re: Showalter link – I guess you can look at that situation a couple of ways, depending on which “side,” if any you’re inclined to take.
Skipping Phil in Texas is less about an innings cap, and much more about using their 2nd best pitcher (right now) in Tampa.
So it looks like
Buck Showalter says “get off my field”?
“Last night, when some Yankees pitchers were lingering on the field while the Orioles were taking BP, Showalter asked them to move, according to a Newsday report. “I guess he’s old school,” one of them said. Joe Girardi said he wouldn’t have cared if the O’s were playing catching during Yankees BP”
http://blogs.courant.com/baseb.....alter.html
I didn’t realize that the White Sox had moved ahead of the Red Sox in the Wildcard race until the YES Network announcer mentioned it in the pregame show.
I don’t think that either of the Sox will win the wildcard but I thought that the three AL East teams would have the best records in baseball…that might not happen now.

The right market? Change of life situation? Message to the Yankees?
Lots can be read into it which is why the timing is odd. Jeter usually doesn’t do things that invite speculation.
Maybe there’s too many notches on his bedpost for Minka’s liking.
His place is 5,425 square feet and only 4 bedrooms? Those are some big bedrooms.
http://www.trumpworldtower.com/units.html
There’s a unit there with more bedrooms/baths/sqft for $12.4mil (Jeter is asking $20mil).
I guess Jete thinks he should make more because of his name when it comes to his condo too.
Burnett, Vazquez, and Mosely in Texas
Sigh
“There’s a unit there with more bedrooms/baths/sqft for $12.4mil (Jeter is asking $20mil).”
What floor? It’s all about the floor.

I didn’t comment on Jeter; commented on Showalter link.
But, as far as Jeter selling NY condo? Who the heck knows. Maybe he’s been reading this blog, realizes how awful he is and how much he’ll be hold the Yankees back, and so is going to retire, marry Minka, settle in his Tampa complex and raise a passel of kids.
I’m thinking Aceves has thrown his last pitch for the Yankees.
Back problems are hard to come back from and the Yankees have a slew of RH options for the pen going forward. My guess is that Ace gets non-tendered this winter.
I also think Marte could be done in pinstripes. He has one year left on his deal but hasn’t been healthy either of the last two years. The club may just eat his contract to free up space on the 40 man roster.
Jacksquat, it could be the view, such as one apt may be on the 3rd floor, versus the 24th floor.
I just checked the Yankees 40 man roster and saw that Hector Noesi is on the 40 man roster. I wonder if they will call him up to the majors when Scranton’s playoffs are done. It would be nice to get a look/see of him.

——————————————————————————–
Why??? He’s under cost control and isn’t up for arbitration or available for free agency. I don’t see what is to be gained by non-tendering Aceves…it would be better to let him come back and try to regain the role he thrived in in 2009.

Jeter’s is 88th floor, the other is 76th (technically two apartments). That difference wouldn’t make much difference to me, but I’m not expert on high priced condos in NYC.

Oops! That will teach me to scan comments and talk on the phone at the same time.
I remember when they built that building. It’s almost positioned perfectly to erase my view of the Empire State Building from my bedroom.
It’s just a big black monolith. A horrible building.

If they are going to eat Marte’s contract they should bring him to spring training to see if he’s got anything left before cutting him.
Guys that are currently on the 40 man roster who should be dropped are:
Chad Moeller
Chad Gaudin
Dustin Mosely
Wilkin De La Rosa
Juan Miranda – he could be traded but the Yanks won’t get much for him
Lance Berkman
Austin Kearns
Reeggie Corona
jacksquat
If your view is a 77 floor building across the street it is less desirable than a view of the East River or NY Skyline from the 88th floor.
Also, the construction costs of turning 2 condos into 1 in NYC can get pricey.
Hey all.
Yankees WILL win this game.
It’s probably alright to start to root for the fenway franks since they’ve given up on their season.
Baltimore is finally showing the kind of team they really have. (Doreen, wish you were here last night when I was talking about Baltimore as a good team, fielding a good team, finally reaching its promise.
) Anyway, everyone outside of this forum seems to realize that they have a lot of good players who, under Buck, have turned their season around!
GO YANKEES!!!
no pressure on Nova today here……
What’s funny is that according to Wikipedia, the building only has 72 floors but the elevator goes up to 90.
What a scam.
after Texas this weekend….we just play division teams the rest of the way….who made the schedule like that…

Don’t forget Javy Vazquez and Nick Johnson.
I don’t know which players the Yankees have to put on the 40 to protect from the Rule V draft, but figure that there will be a bunch, as well as whatever free agents the club signs
Nova > CC YEP
It’s just a big black monolith. A horrible building.
=======================================
Damn, that is ugly. Must be some riff on the monolith in the movie “2001″.
i wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees scored a whole bunch of runs today
Wow no Ace, no Marte. (Just reading the lead in)
somewhat better start to te game than last night.
at least in the first inning, he’s showing a killer curve.

Wow no Ace, no Marte. (Just reading the lead in)
We haven’t had them the whole year. Nothing to be wowed at.
syd_cash – just have a strong feeling that the Yanks will walk away with this game. And it isn’t because they’re playing the Orioles. Heck the O’s are 7-3 in their last 10! I just think we’ve got this game.
Don’t forget Javy Vazquez and Nick Johnson.

=============================================
Technically speaking, Nick Johnson is not on the 40 man roster (he was moved to the 60 day DL and will probably be released without returning to the 40 man roster). You are right about Vazquez…let him go to free up a spot for one of the guys who need protection. Vazquez might be an effective pitcher in the NL for a team with a big park (Mets, Braves or Padres).
carl, I just thought they’d be coming back at some point is all.
What a shocker!! 3 pitches to gardner…all looking.
That’s terrific news about Aceves and Marte
What a loser Michael Kay is for repeating what Buck Showalter. I wonder if Buck McCluck decided to say all that crap before their Red Sox series. I bet Buck McCluck said “Please continue doing what you normally do versus the Sox, and that’s lie down and roll over”
Wow, that was a heck of a play!
bad luck, what effort by this bum at 3rd base and by Wigginton – who is actually a decent player.
Yankees just like horrible with the bats. What the hell kinda inning was that?
Ugly at bats, even for the first inning.
Keith Olbermann v. Buck Showalter? Steel death cage match for the ages. Not sure which one has more enemies in his chosen profession ; )
If I see this darn LibertyMedical diabetes one more time, Im gonna smash something.
carl, give them time.
Whomever insults Kim Jones is partially off base. What was Kay laughing at when he said he’d get a copy of the picture for her. This guy is getting married soon, and yet he continues to sound a like disgusting old man fawning over Jones. Geez, he has one of the best jobs in the world, and the whole job is a joke to him.
Nice cheap strike 3!
# trisha – true pinstriped blue September 8th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
carl, give them time.
A-God is coming up next. I have faith in lord Alex.
Don’t forget that the Orioles as a team have a 3.57 ERA under Buck.
but only a .700 OPS
And a 4.58 ERA in their last 15 games
Nice get away day pace to this one so far.
Nova looks really sharp so far. Hopefully the bats wake up against this 5 era scrub.
Kim Jones looks a bit older today. I wonder if she parties.
Another very nice and clean inning by Nova. He’s shining brightly so far. Have yet to see Nova explode with his best fastball.
I am liking the way Nova pitches.
I dont understand why Andy Pettitte cares about the AAA playoffs. Who gives a flying ….. The last thing we need is for Andy to overexert himself in a meaningless game and have a setback. Now that’s mismanagement. Id prefer if Andy just went and got his work in.
Carl, we definitely have this game. (It’s one of those deep gut feelings I get. I hope I don’t have to test out what it would mean if it didn’t happen. I’ve really been on with those gut feelings! I’d have to find a new way of life!!!
)
Speaking of gut feelings and other things removed from the scientific. I wish I could find the article where the NY psychic said before the season started that this would be the worst season of Derek’s career. The good news about that is that it would hopefully imply that next season will be better!)
I sometimes wonder if his relationship with Minka Kelly has changed things at all. Could he have lost some of his focus? Just a question.
hard hit ball right at them again. please dont let this be another day like yesterday, filled with bad luck.

=================================
Hope so. I bet she’s a tiger in the sack.
Rodriguez has been blistering the ball since he’s returned.
ugh….i’m so over this O’s game cause I’m tired of having to watch MASN
Another rocket
finally Nick gets a hit against the Orioles…cause normally he hits them really well
Cano looks like he needs a week off. He is just hacking away at anything and then jogs to 1st base.
Buck Showalter is a dirtpile. Anyone remember when he sat his players on Texas in the final game of the season in 2005 against the Angels to gift them HFA over us. We would have had HFA if the Rangers beat the Angels, since we lost the final game to the sox.
Winning is a contagious thing, especially for a team that hasn’t been doing it. It’s good to see the Orioles playing with some confidence and a bit of a swagger. They definitely started out the season with a team worthy of winning a lot of games. It would seem to be obvious that managers can and do make a difference (I believe there are people who think that managers don’t realy matter so much.)
Today I want to the Orioles to take the back seat. Once they leave they can start their winning ways again.
# Captain Clutch September 8th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

I got ripped from pointing out a bad Cano at bat.
syd_cash – do you have Extra Innings?
i like that hughes is fighting the extra rest. i like the spirit, but the idea that extra rest is throwing him off rythym is ridiculous considering that on regular rest he still has been far from sharp lately.
BUt i like the spirit and i think Hughes will continue to get better.
Ty Wigginton has been looking Keith Hernandezish at first base all series and it’s beginning to get on my nerves.
Everyone agree that the Sux have raised the white flag? They had said that if they won yesterday Bucholz would be pitching today on early rest but if they lost he would not. Well he isn’t pitching today. It would seem that they have signalled that they understand their season is basically over.
Its always a lot more fun when the competition is more fun. I miss when the O’s were a real threat. I can’t imagine what it must be like for people who root for Central teams who have such sub-par competition on a regular basis. Then again, I guess when no ones that good everyone has a shot.. Boy, I’m a circular talker..

syd_cash – do you have Extra Innings?
—————
Nah I just get the MLB.TV package…but I live within the Baltimore/DC viewing area. So I get blacked out of the YES feed of Yanks/O’s game.
I got ripped from pointing out a bad Cano at bat.
————-
He looks worn out from playing everyday in the heat. There is no reason to get ripped..it’s the truth. They asked Long the other day what he sees with him recently and he said he is tired from playing everyday. That is why I thought he might get today off with the off today tomorrow and considering it will be 150 degrees in Texas…but I guess not.
Is there a reason why Heyman can never do a proper game thread?
Nova’s next time through the order will be interesting to watch. See if Baltimore changes tactics and tries to wait him out or go opposite field.
3 innings…30 pitches for Nova.
Why do I feel more confident with a guy making his 4th MLB start on the hill over AJ?
ALRIGHT…..let’s just get these runs and get that over with
good thing that was a horrible throw by Weiters
why does he try for a triple???? wouldn;t it be better to be on 2nd with one out
Jeter sucks. Plain and simple. He sucks.
It’s odd.
Gardy is so cautious when trying to steal a base, but not when get’s a hit and tries to stretch a double into a tripe.
Shutdown inning would be nice. Nova does throw strikes.
Hey, don’t talk about my cousin Derek that way.
