1. It doesn?t happen often but I completely agree with Mike Francesa ? the Yankees should be ashamed of themselves for partnering with Jay-Z and helping him market a #4 shirt with his name on it. For an organization that gets all bent out of shape when outside entities question the tradition this is a farce.
2. I think it?s more likely that if the Yankees decided at some point to part ways with Cash; Mark Newman would be first in line to replace him, not Oppenheimer. I just think that the Yankees value Oppenheimer and Eppler in the roles they?re in and will overpay to keep them there as long as possible. Kevin Towers on the other hand was always going to be a short timer here ? Cashman and Towers both knew that going in. Towers is too good at what he does to be done as a GM.
3. I know this is old news but endulge me ? The Colby Rasmus stuff in St. Louis is pretty interesting. Seems to me that to keep Albert happy the Cards will probably move Rasmus to try and keep LaRussa ? if Rasmus was on the block, would the Yankees be able to get him for a package of Phelps and Granderson with the understanding that the Yankees would absorb some of Curtis?s money?
“if Rasmus was on the block, would the Yankees be able to get him for a package of Phelps and Granderson with the understanding that the Yankees would absorb some of Curtis?s money?”
David Murphy hit Yankee pitching well the last time the teams met and he’ll be in the Ranger lineup.
Not so sure about Josh Hamilton who’s been banged up.
I’d love Rasmus (although I think many LoHudders would not like him because of his K rate). If the Cards make Rasmus available (I don’t think they will), teams will stand in line to bid for him. I don’t think Phelps and Granderson gets it done, even if the Yanks take a chunk of Granderson’s salary.
Given the players that Cashman has worked to bring in, it doesn’t seem like Rasmus fits the mold. Cash doesn’t go after characters, he goes after high positive character types, such as Granderson, Teixeira, Swisher, CC. I think he learned from the Sheffield days. Talent alone doesn’t quite seem to make the cut. At least not recently.
I just don’t see the Yankees taking on a potential problem in the clubhouse after all the work done to make it a fun place to be.
No. Newman is a guy who is a lifer type in the organization and is good at the minor league level.
However, the GM’s job today is more than just dealing with the farm system. In fact, that part of the job is more important for the GM to hire the right people than to shepard over it.
The key today is to mix old school and new school strategies, the business side of the game (contracts, arbitration, etc), pro scouting/development acumen, and media savvy.
Its one reason why the position has been trending younger in many of its candidates in recent years.
Its an all encompassing, pretty much year round job now.
IMO, of the people in the organization right now, Eppler best fits the needs for the position because he has his hands in all of these areas right now and is doing a very good job at it.
Brian Cashman is not much older than Jeter will be at the end of his next contract (if Jeter gets the contract some of you think he will get).
I think Cashman still has some life in his legs.

I know that Cashman is still old and he could go the route that many GM’s have gone and just stick around forever. But being the GM of the Yankees has gotta be an incredibly stressful job. There’s only so much a man can take!
From the outside looking in it looks like the best job in the world (other than actually playing ball) but I’m sure that even a guy like Cashman could get tired of it.

Cervelli usually catches Javy and AJ.
I don’t think it is anything controversial, as Po has caught Javy in relief, and was so very happy fo Javy the last game Javy won.
Cashman realizes that he mortgaged the future with long term, high priced contracts (including the one Jeter will get) and knows he will be better off elsewhere when the payroll and line-up is jammed up with lame, expensive former stars. He will ride off with his rings and leave the mess for someone else.
No one knows for sure what, if any changes will be made this off season with regards to manager or GM.
I do believe however, this off season will be too important for the team to make any major changes.
FA’s look at the teams they are interested in, the management and direction the team is headed. One thing you don’t want to do, is make players uncomfortable about the team their going to.
SJ44 – You are definitey the most insightful person on this blog. Not sure where you get all your information, but, I for one enjoy reading your posts.
While SJ44 is right about the current long terms contracts – although I thought CC was signed past 2013 – in any case, we all know that between now and then the Yankees will likely hand out more big-money long term deals to FAs (Crawford, Lee, etc.), so while I would welcome that kind of contract flexibility with the team, I don’t see it ever actually happening.
VICTORY !

SJ –
On your last post on the last thread – don’t you think Mark Newman would be a better choice than Eppler or Oppenheimer?
Just seems to me that in his position Newman has a better overview of the organization as a whole than either of the other two.

IMO, no.

Wave,
No the Yankees wouldn’t be able to do it or no you don’t want Rasmus?
Does Cevelli usually catch Javy or is this due to the concussion the other day that Posada is not in the line up??

Don, when I read that I had visions of Boris Grishenko from the James Bond movie, GoldenEye getting frozen. lol.

Why would the Yankees get Rasmus? I would NOT trade Granderson even if they pick up his entire contract.

Actually there is a surprise in today’s lineup – that Jeter is still leading off. It’s an unpleasant surprise.

Whoops I mean to say “I know that Cashman is still young…”

Patrick-
Stressful, but probably addictingly so. Brian will be the GM as long as the Yanks want him.

IMO, Girardi and Cashman stay.
Actually, the opposite is true.
Only Tex and Arod have contracts past 2013.
The Yankees haven’t had this kind of contract flexibility for a long time.
Its actually the perfect balance for a large market team.
SJ44 – You are definitey the most insightful person on this blog. Not sure where you get all your information, but, I for one enjoy reading your posts.
Doesn’t CC have a long term contract past 2013? I know he has an opt out in the contract, but I thought it ran longer than 2013.
P.S. Also AJ’s contract goes 3 or 4 more years, not sure.
CC is through 2015 I believe. AJ is through 2013.
CC’s contract runs to 2015.
I wasn’t counting CC’s deal because it has an opt out after next year.
We don’t know yet whether he will exercise it or not.
If he doesn’t, then he is added to the list of guys who have deals after 2013.
If CC’s comments are to be believed, and they seem sincere, he won’t opt out.
