Athletics Yankees BaseballTonight
RHP Javier Vazquez (10-9, 5.01)
vs.
LHP C.J. Wilson (14-6, 3.10)
8:05 p.m., YES Network

Saturday
RHP A.J. Burnett (10-13, 5.15)
vs.
RHP Tommy Hunter (12-3, 3.99)
8:05 p.m., YES Network / MLB Network

Sunday
RHP Dustin Moseley (4-2, 4.83)
vs.
LHP Cliff Lee (10-8, 3.37)
3:05 p.m., YES Network / TBS

Because of a sore lower back, Cliff Lee hasn’t pitched since August 31. He was 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA in August… Josh Hamilton remains day-to-day because of sore ribs… Shortstop Elvis Andrus has been dealing with a sore hamstring and sat out the Rangers previous series in Toronto.

Very cool that tomorrow’s game is on the MLB Network. I can get away from the Texas announcers. Of course, knowing my luck they’ll just show the Texas feed. LOL

  2. Mike_Boston September 10th, 2010 at 11:37 am

Erin, I’m pretty sure MLB produce their own broadcast on Saturday nights, so it shouldn’t be either feed, usually Bob Costas does them.

  3. Cashman needs to go September 10th, 2010 at 11:37 am

So judging by the overwhelming advantage that the Rangers’ starting pitching seems to have in this series – I would expect the Yankees to sweep all 3 games.

Isn’t that how it seems to be working this year with the Yankees?

Joey Votto on Cincinnati has not hit an infield pop-up all season. How amazing is that?

Tonight will be one of the last attempts for Javy Vazquez to make a case for his postseason status.

  7. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 11:40 am

Over/under on winning at least one of these games?

  8. CBean September 10th, 2010 at 11:41 am

I hope Lee is okay to pitch. They better not be risking my future starter.

Sinatra’s version was played after a Yankees win, and the Minnelli version after a loss.

As if we needed another reason to hate Yankee losses.

  10. murphydog September 10th, 2010 at 11:48 am

“As if we needed another reason to hate Yankee losses.”

I always picture Liza with an absurd amount of mascara running down her face. To me, the Liza version of New York, New York is like nails on a blackboard, er, like nails on a vodka soaked blackboard.

  11. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 11:49 am

C.J. Wilson last time versus Yankees:
    5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO.

    Tommy Hunter:
    Have not faced Hunter

    Cliff Lee:
    Aug 11
    6.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 11 SO.

  12. Tom in N.J. September 10th, 2010 at 11:50 am

I think the liza version was played to prevent loitering.

  13. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 11:51 am

BTW, The Yankees lost to CJ 4-3 and beat Cliff Lee 7-6.

  14. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 11:52 am

Hunter began the season on the DL – was activated on 29 Apr and recalled on 5 Jun. He did not pitch during the Aug series.

  15. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 11:56 am

    CJ’s 2010 stats vs Yankees:
    0-1, 3.97 ERA, 2 GS, 1 CG, 11.1 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 10 SO and a .267 BAA

Cliff Lee’s 2010 stats against the Yankees:
    1-0, 4.11 ERA, 2 GS, 1 CG, 15.1 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB, 13 SO, and a .262 BAA

  16. Bronx Jeers September 10th, 2010 at 11:58 am

Liza Minelli sucks the soul right out of me. I don’t even know why.

Last year my wife took a singing class and she choose “Cabaret” as her front-of-the-class performance.

    Those were some tough times.

I don’t think its a coincidence that the yankees seem to face the 3 best pitchers of every staff when they play “big games” – I think girardi is the only one that doesn’t rotate the staff to assure his better pitcher(s) face the better competition.

And no I don’t count facing Brian Bullington and Lily Tomlin as an exception (if you do to that I say the yankees have faced Felix Hernandez 3 times in all 3 series against the mariners – while the rays haven’t faced him this year (yet they still have 1 more series) and the redsox only once (which they lost) AND will miss him again next week.

  18. Bronx Jeers September 10th, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I think the liza version was played to prevent loitering.

    ————————————————————–

Yet at the same time it could just as easily incite rioting. I guess it depends on one’s “fight or flight” response.

  19. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

This should make you all feel better… or not:
Javy’s stats against the Rangers in (8/11) 2010:
    0-0, 12.46 ERA, 1 GS, 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO, .364 BAA

AJ: (Aug 10 no decision, team lost 4-3, Apr 17, won 7-3)
    1-0, 1.93 ERA, 2 GS, 14 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 11 SO, .226 BAA

    Dustin Moseley:
    Did not pitch against TX.
    Road stats:
    2-1, 4.15 ERA, 3 GS, 17.1 IP, 18 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 9 SO, .290 BAA

  20. Shame Spencer September 10th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

IIRC, Liza found out the Yanks only played her version when they lost and told them to cut it out.

  21. austinmac September 10th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I’ll be at the game tomorrow night. Let’s hope for the good AJ, a healthy Swisher and Posada, and, while I’m at it, a blow out win.

  22. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Cashman Needs to Go – methinks they’ll be lined up for the Rays’ series following this one…
CC, Nova, and Hughes will face off against Price, Garza, and Shields respectively. I think that’s a bigger series than the TX one…

  23. murphydog September 10th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

    Bronx Jeers:

“Last year my wife took a singing class and she choose “Cabaret” as her front-of-the-class performance.

Why is it they always hurt the one they love ;) Marriage. It’s not for the squeamish.

  24. sunny615 September 10th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

In case any of you were wondering:
    Tommy Hunters’ home stats:
    7-0, 3.16 ERA, 9 GS, 57 IP, 56 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 11 HR, 10 BB, 31 SO, .253 BAA

  25. Rishi September 10th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I thought the Liza Minelli thing was a misconception…will look for article

  26. CR9 September 10th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I hope Lee is just injured enough to where he is ineffective on Sunday, but not too injured to affect him in the months going forward. A very tight line to walk, imo.

  27. Shame Spencer September 10th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

via wikipedia.org: “Minnelli also raised some controversy when, in 2001, she demanded that the Yankees play her version after a win, or not play it at all. The Yankees took the latter option, and played Sinatra’s version after all wins and losses.”

  28. El Duque September 10th, 2010 at 12:25 pm

    murphydog -

Just read your advice to Tino. Spot on, my friend.

I’m skipping around here the last couple of days. Finally got the cable installed at daughter’s apartment. Waiting for the mattress. She’s lucky she has me – she’s off with her friends. :)

I noticed the last couple of years that it’s All Frank Sinatra all the time; it really did used to be FS after a win and LM after a loss. I like both versions, frankly (no pun intended. ) :)

  31. Mr. Furious September 10th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Excellent. None of the games will be blacked on MLBEI.

  32. Erin September 10th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

JackCurryYES Cashman wouldn’t discuss possible post-season rotation, but, of starters, said, “The ability is there. It’s about getting them on line.”

  33. Mr. Furious September 10th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

    Or blacked out, either.

  34. m September 10th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

    Repost:

Tino does NOT want to hear feedback from the fans. It will be crushing..

We have to think of winning series, not splitting them. TB wants HFA, too.

Cito hates the Yankees, so much I wouldn’t he surprised if he rolled over for Tampa Bay.

    _______________________________________

Yankees are old hat at playing meaningful, and sometimes their best baseball down the stretch. Somewhat of a foreign concept to Texas and even Tampa Bay, who has had just the one magical season to their resume.

  35. Doreen September 10th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

    Shame Spencer,

I can’t say I blame Ms. Minnelli if that did in fact happen.

  36. m September 10th, 2010 at 12:35 pm

    Doreen,

Gone are the days when you had to waste half your day waiting for the cable guy.

When that say 11:15, that mean it.

Ah the wonders of dish network competition and cellphones for the drivers. :)

They only started playing the Liza version after Frank Sinatra died. I am guessing after his death it became more expensive to play

7-2 Road Trip, I am out of my mind, calling it out….Will put all the Yankee Doubters RIGHT in their place !

  39. Shame Spencer September 10th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

I certainly can’t blame her either, though I’ve always preferred Sinatra’s version myself.

The NY Rangers I believe also play “New York, New York” (Sinatra’s version) when they win but started playing Ryan Adams’ song “New York, New York” after a loss. I wonder if the Yankees ever considered using another New York related song after a loss. Could be some interesting options.

  40. I Like Inge September 10th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Ryan Adam’s “New York New York” song is so chipper. No need to play that after a loss.

Are you the guy who predicted a 10-0 home stand? Not a bad call for a while. I hope you’re right on this occasion but I think most of us will take 5-4, or even 4-5, given the current state of our starting rotation. All I really care about is ensuring the last three games at Fenway are meaningless in terms of the post-season.

  43. Erica in NY September 10th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

  49. SJ44 September 10th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

At this point, it doesn’t matter who plays or who pitches.

To quote Mariano Duncan from 1996, “We play today, we win today”.

They just have to find a way to win games on this roadtrip by whatever means possible.

It’s not about sparing anybody’s feelings or placating wounded or shaky egos.

If they can take that attitude into each game, they should be fine.

Try living out out a suitcase at least 4 nights a week – there is always space in the closet…until stuff comes back from the dry cleaner and I finally decide to unpack….I store winter/summer clothes and still have piles all over the place.

Some “for charity” cleaning with a glass of wine might be a good way to spend the afternoon :)

Agree. If Girardi manages as laid-back as the last homestand, we’ll be in trouble. Play to win, and we should be OK. We have 13 guys in the pen and the starters should be playing everyday. No more Pena-Cervelli-Kearns bottom of the lineups, Thames playing the field, Berkman playing against lefties or 1B instead of Tex, etc.

    Play to win, thats it.

    m -

Mattress guys must be asleep at the wheel!

‘Cause bed/nightstand guys were 2 hours late yesterday.

I wouldn’t mind, but you know – can’t run the necessary errands.

Cable guy was great. Quick, efficient, on time. I mentioned how glad I was that he was on time, and he said he could have been earlier but didn’t want to get in the way if we were moving in. So, considerate, too! ;)

  58. SoS September 10th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Hola mi amigos. Just wanted to drop by and say hi to my second family.

I wanted to mention something that in my mind that is very impressive.

Problems Yankees have had most of this year.
    1. Jeter not being Jeteresk
    2. Arod power outage and being banged up for most of the season
    3. Joba who seemed to be throwing left handed for most of the first half
    4. AJ being AJ
    5. Vasquez having scared of ghosts and playing the Jeckle Hyde game with us
    6. Granderson struggling 2/3 of the season
    7. Pettitte out for a significant amount of time
    8. Rays pitching staff staying healthy for most of the season
    9. Posada hurt all year
    10. Cervelli needing contacts(sorry ladies) to finally see the ball, hit the ball

With all that crap above, we are STILL in first place with the best record in baseball. Watch out!! It would seem like this resiliant team has another run in them for the playoffs. This time with a one man rotation.

  59. Patrick from CT September 10th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Holy Cow SOS, that’s a lot of problems.
That core four is showing age minus the oldest of the group.

I believe we will see Jeter and ARod pick things up down the stretch.
Andy will be back soon and help CC lead the staff.

The Yankees are the best team in baseball because they are so deep.
I don’t care how tough these last 22 games look, the Yankees are going to end the regular season with 99 or 100 wins.

Looking at the pitching matchups I’d say we are going to Tampa Bay with a 3-game losing streak.

  62. Macfan September 10th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

    Folks let’s be honest with

    Vazquez
    Burnett
    Moseley

all starting, keep our fingers crossed that Toronto takes 2 of 3 from Tampa this weekend

Because we are going to Tampa with a 3 game losing streak

I already have our record pegged at 87-56 heading to Tampa at most 1 game back in the L column

I have no faith in any of those guys starting in Texas

Burnett has been an unmitigated disgrace of a major league pitcher this season for a team in 1st place, just awful numbers

As Cashman said if your name isn’t Sabathia your post season role is up for audition in the next 3 weeks of the season
