First pitch pushed to 7:35

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 20, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees have announced the full schedule for tonight’s pregame ceremony.

Everything will begin at 7:05, pushing first pitch back to 7:35. There will be a video tribute, the family will got to monument park and the monument itself will be unveiled at 7:20.

I’m guessing the whole thing will be on the YES Network.

SJ is correct. Cervelli will catch AJ in the playoffs. Posada will DH, though. So you’ll be swapping Berkman or Thames for Cervelli.

Curios as to how the grass will look after last weeks concert.

    Erica,

I am watching HIMYM and Chuck as well

I think I?m going to check out The Event as well, looks cool.

Yes!!! I have “The Event” on my list too. I have a small crush on Jason Ritter. I am a little weary of those high concept shows since “FlashForward” flames out, but hopefully this one is better

Knowing the outcome already – I wish girardi would have swapped berkman for cervelli in the 11th inning yesterday :-)

Have to agree with those who have said that if AJ has to have a personal catcher then he shouldn’t start in the postseason.

I’m hoping they let Posada catch him on Wednesday and his remaining starts so that he will be able to in the playoffs…he’s just not been good enough to take Posada out of the lineup.

  7. blake September 20th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

I also will be DVRing “The Event”……gonna give it a try.

being a big believer in statistics and how things usually even out in the end – shouldn’t it be about time that the rays bench players start playing like bench players – i.e. reid brignac, willy aybar, mr miami vice dan johnson and everyone else they bring up that has come up with a big hit the last couple of months should now start to suck like they ought to considering they are bench players..

and on the other end – shouldn’t the yankee scrubs start getting those hits that should even out their sucktitude the entire year?

  9. Captain Clutch September 20th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Everyone knows that Cervelli is going to catch AJ in the post season. That is how Girardi rolls and if he was thinking about Posada catching him it would of happened by now. It stinks. The Yanks will basically be playing with the pitcher batting 9th. The weird thing is if they make it to the ws and burnett doesn’t pitch game 2 he will be pitching at home so they won’t have the pitcher and Cervelli at the bottom. So that would be the only positive.

  10. Nick in SF September 20th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

At this point I’m not sure AJ even warrants his own personal pie crust.

We don’t know what Girardi’s plans for AJ in the postseason are yet; he probably doesn’t know yet either. But AJ might be starting Game Two of the ALDS. :?

  11. Wave Your Hat September 20th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

If Cervelli must catch AJ, then Gaudin, Moseley or Nova should replace AJ in the post-season.

I don’t understand the notion that the highest paid pitchers must pitch, or that the judgments the Yankee brass made 2 years ago must apply to this post-season.

All three of those pitchers have pitched better than AJ this year. If on top of that you replace Cervelli with Jorge…well it makes no sense.

However, I will continue to believe Jorge will catch AJ in the playoffs, whatever happens Wednesday.

If Jorge were to catch Wednesday, he’d start three days in a row (I assume Jorge catches CC on Thursday). Jorge hasn’t started three games in a row for a while. So that’s my reasoning why Jorge could sit Wednesday yet catch AJ in the post-season.

Remember, last year Jorge sat for Molina. But Cervelli is no Molina, and I’m sure Girardi is aware of it.

I was just listening to Kay on the radio and he said that bringing back Torre and Donnie tonight was a mistake. He said tonight should be about George and instead the main topic will be Torre returning. He said that should of been saved for another time. What Kay said does make sense but he hates Torre so you knew he would say something in that direction.

Based on this quote it seems like Salty has adressed it. Just not successfully acording to the guy that is quoted.

“Grand has read about Saltalamacchia’s work with sports psychologist Harvey Dorfman, but his belief is that Dorfman and other sports psychologists don’t have the necessary expertise in trauma. His belief is that throwing disorders are triggered by trauma, and unless the trauma is treated specifically, the player never really gets the problem out of his system.”

  16. blake September 20th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Cervelli shouldn’t see the field in the post season unless Posada gets hurt or they need a pinch bunter for some reason.

I think it would be criminal to start Burnett Game 2 of the ALDS :(

For the good of the team they can’t pitch 4 pitchers in the ALDS. I can’t wait till we get closer, and the playoff pitcher is almost 100% defined so Joe can go over his strategies more than just ‘we’re getting healthier’

While I agree it will divert attention from the main focus, the invitation was necessary.

Torre and Donnie were two huge parts of the Steinbrenner era.

And not inviting Torre would only lend credence to McCarver’s boneheaded “Airbrushing Torre out of their history” statement

    Great stuff from everyone.

Kay needs to shut up. A bridge is about to be repaired and he hates it.

A note on Cervelli starting over Posada, it’s likely Girardi didn’t want to start his whole line up right now. With so many injuries perhaps he wants to give it a few more days before he gets the team on all cylinders again.

    Also Wave Your Hat,

I think you’d be crazy to start Gaudin or Moseley over AJ. Nova is making a case to get in there somewhere, but I’m betting on him getting in as a long man.

Gaudin and Moseley are both average at best. They’re not awful pitchers, but would you want them to start against the game’s best lineups? No way. Same goes for Vazquez. I’d rather go with a guy with tremendous upside in the playoffs than someone who is average.

You’ve just got to put faith in AJ and hope he’s turned it around, which he may have as of late. Also I think he’d be a better game 2 starter versus game 3 or 4. If he loses game 2, that won’t lose the series.

  40. Doreen September 20th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

As much as I was really brought up short by Torre’s book, I still think it’s best to let bygones be bygones. It’s appropriate for Torre and Mattingly to be at the Stadium tonight. How did they get away? Do the Dodgers have an off day? Are they on the east coast? Is it serendipitous?

Anyway, mending fences is most times a very good thing. And while some people will talk about the Torre aspect, I think it takes nothing away from the tribute to George; in fact, had he not been here, it would have been worse. At least this is positive talk and not negative talk.

And Kay is just making hay for his radio show. I take everything he says with a huge grain of salt.

  42. Yogi Mantle September 20th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

I personally think its great that Torre and Mattingly are coming in for this. Despite the way things had ended, the time had run its course and its time to give some recognition to Torre as well as to see that George had a good run in part due to Torre and his management.

This relationship was like a couple getting divorced. There was bound to be some hurt feeling and rancor that goes with it. Torre was as much a part of the Yankees as Jeter during those years, like him or not.

I don’t think this detracts from honoring George Steinbrenner, in some ways it echos what he did with putting things aside with Yogi. Its honoring the memories and opening the path for those good memories to come to the forefront.

    Thanks.

So, was it serendipitous that the Monument is being dedicated tonight and Torre and Mattingly just happen to be available, or did the Yankees look at the schedule and reach out?

  51. Yank 97 September 20th, 2010 at 5:27 pm

After the Yanks won #27… they had no reason to be bitter anymore. They won without Torre, Cashman’s handpicked manager won in his 2nd year, and they didn’t have Torre hanging over their head anymore.

Nobody could say anymore that the Yankees miss Torre (like the media says this year with Matsui/Damon rehashed over and over) or that they made a mistake firing him or they made a mistake getting rid of him and they can’t win without him. The organization looks much better now that they won without Torre.

If they didn’t win last year and Girardi was on the hotseat while they were continuing to get hammered for getting rid of Torre… I don’t think they would be as gracious.

  53. ZMAN September 20th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Is the difference between Cervelli and Posada starting (1 batter out of 9, remember) in the playoffs the same as starting an awful starter like Gaudin, Mitre, Mosely, or proven mediocrity like Vazquez… instead of a potentially dominant AJ?

  54. MTU September 20th, 2010 at 5:35 pm

    ZMAN-

    That’s what’s called a false dichotomy.

No reason Posada couldn’t and shouldn’t catch AJ in the playoffs.

    That would give us both.

  55. Wave Your Hat September 20th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

“awful starter like Gaudin, Mitre, Mosely, or proven mediocrity like Vazquez… instead of a potentially dominant AJ?”

Your question assumes away the issue. Overall, all three of those pitchers have pitched better than AJ this year.

Sure, if you know you are going to get the good AJ, he should start. But you don’t.

  56. LGY September 20th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Burnett falls squarely within the definition of awful starter this season.

His name or salary should not change the definition of his performance.

  57. RMS September 20th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Torre and Donnie were big parts of the Yankees when George was there. Good job by the Yankees for inviting them. I think they will both get well deserved ovations.

  58. Betsy September 20th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Just because Joe will probably insist on making an enormous blunder by having catch Cervelli and AJ doesn’t mean AJ needs a personal catcher or that he even asked for one. This is the type of decision that yes, makes me want to see Joe not come back.

I didn’t hear much of Cash’s interview; did he mention anyone other than Cano and Gardner? The Cano part was interesting because he told how Girardi showed Cano a video of that play that led him to being benched (was it in Anaheim). I don’t think Cano realized until then how that was perceived. Apparently he appreciated that Joe cared enough to point this out to him in that way. Cash also mentioned that you sometimes want to motivate players with the earnings potential. That if Cano is just a very good player, then when his ability declines with his physical condition (or aging, I guess), then so does the $$. However, if you are a HOF, you are a HOFer for life and it obviously comes with incredible cachet.

  59. Betsy September 20th, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Actually I did hear Cash talk about Swish ………….and he was obviously not happy with Verducci for praising the Sox for the same thing he killed the Yankees for.

  60. RMS September 20th, 2010 at 5:44 pm

“Burnett falls squarely within the definition of awful starter this season.”

AJ did have a couple of good starts, but if Girardi starts him, which I think he will, he better have a fast hook.

  61. Tank September 20th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Over his last 25 starts, Burnett has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball.

Yes, he had a good outing against BAL, but citing his ERA this month is useless. He was AWFUL against the Os at the stadium. He should have given up 8 runs if he was facing a good team. He was decent against an awful Oakland lineup. The Texas game was 4 innings… nothing to draw good or bad from that game. So he has a 3 game sample this month – 1 good, 1 mediocre, 1 bad. Seems to sum up AJ.

The assumption that we will get the good AJ is an unfounded one.

  62. MTU September 20th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

  64. Betsy September 20th, 2010 at 5:46 pm

I heard two seconds of Kay, then shut him off; I can’t stand him anymore.

I am under no delusions, nor do I care, that this is really a thawing of relations and that Cash and Torre are going to be best friends again.

  65. Betsy September 20th, 2010 at 5:48 pm

AJ is going to start -and he has been pitching better lately. He’s like an incumbent President – it’s going to take a lot to knock him out. Not one pitcher has stepped up enough to warrant removing AJ from the rotation. I sure don’t trust him, but I don’t trust any of the other options either.

  66. Betsy September 20th, 2010 at 5:50 pm

He didn’t spend that much time about Swish and I didn’t necessarily think Cash was (or is) thinking long term with him. All he said was that they liked him going back to Oakland, but the price was too high……………..that he was terribly unlucky for 4 months in Chicago before he was benched.

  80. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 20th, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Ruby Tuesday is not a Yankee fan.

Was just listening to Francessa waiting for BP. He had Sweeny Murti on and when I tuned in they were talking about HFA. One place where HFA is huge, certainly always in theory as well as practicality, is when there’s a tie game at the end of the 9th inning. Maybe there are increased chances of that happening in the postseason due to the evenness of the teams playing, but I know that I have always dreaded extras because I believe that whichever team blinks first is the one who pays. But that said, I have always feel comforted if the Yanks have home field whenever they have had to play extras. There’s nothing like the security of knowing you get last bats.

    *****************

Here’s my own thought about the state of events. With all the Yankees have gone through this season in terms of the uncertainty of the starting rotation (huge), an inconsistent offense, a bull pen in flux, and players injured, it is pretty outstanding that they continue to lead the major league. The Yankees went 0-7 at one point and STILL lead the AL.

The Yankees obviously hold their fate in their own hands. I have learned to trust those hands.

GF, the only times I have commented on another team’s blog (never commented on a Sux blog) is to compliment their team on something. And then I’m on my way back home. I seriously would never think of hanging out on another blog because I actually respect the sanctity of their site and their right to discuss their team unencumbered by outside interference.

  82. CR9 September 20th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I will be DVRing the Event as well. Why is Jorge not playing? Just looking at the news for the first time today… seems more of the anti-NY gibberish. Jacobs is demanding trade, somehow even though the Knicks are Melo’s top choice, the Nets are favorite to land him. Why not just say that the Russian Rebels of CCCP are the favorites to land him over the Knicks. At least then, their bias is more obvious.

do the dodgers have a day off? Even though I now dislike Torre with a passion, I think it’s great we invited him back. Maybe Torre will now back off his anti-Yankees comments of the past.

There is a certain level of both stupidity and persistence that is admirable (on a tiny level) re: Ruby Tuesday’s daily trolling on this blog.

If he ever applied that persistence to his life, he would be more successful than his floundering Boston Red Sox.

Rish, I don’t see anything listed for ESPN in terms of coverage, which doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t cover it. It just isn’t listed. MLB has the Braves and Phils.

    CR9

You must have enjoyed the Jets game yesterday

  87. YankFanCA September 20th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Trisha — why don’t you please at least consider hanging out on another blog.

    Sincerely, 90%+ of LoHud members

  88. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 20th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

SJ I think I would have a hell of a lot more repsect for her/him if she or he just came out and said “I hate the Yankees and I’m going to be here every day to remind you of it” than the stupid phony sad face after every pretending to be upset about any Yankee misfortune.

But I like the karma aspect of it. Only an idiot would continue to do that kind of stuff on another team’s forum.

Congratulations on 3rd place Ruby Tuesday. Congratulate yourself on helping your team to get there. Poor Sux. :(

    Y-A-W-N!!!!!

The only way you represent 90%+ of lohud members is representing that game-thread group who live to complain and are afraid of their own shadows.

    Wave Your Hat,

My point is that Moseley or Gaudin won’t stop a single playoff line up. They don’t have that type of potential. AJ does. Your season history doesn’t matter in the postseason, all that matters are those few games you play.

Nova is certainly making an argument, but I just get the feeling Girardi isn’t going to put the kid in as his starter in the post season. He’s just too experienced for that type of role.

I won’t argue that AJ has been even decent this season, at times he has, but by and large he hasn’t been. However he has shown he still has that potential for dominance which gives you a significantly better chance of winning a playoff game than a potential for mediocrity. It’s that simple.

I see Ruby as the ideal troll if there is such a thing.

The comments are short, to the point and never true.

  93. The Phenom September 20th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

The Moseley or Gaudin over AJ argument in this thread is pointless and stupid. No need to respond.

  94. CR9 September 20th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Yank97 – I did indeed. Thoroughly. Take the kid gloves off Sanchez and let him play, baby….and that’s what they did! The referees treated us fairly much of the game – including 2 pass interference within a couple plays of each other in the 4th quarter, helping lead to the 14 point lead. And the Giants got treated fairly by the referees – but our team was exposed defensively, as was our off. line.

    jeers-

    I don’t even like the restaurant. :)

  97. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 20th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

I fully expect the Yankees to break out during this series and maybe even manhandle the Rays. Sometimes I think there’s a psyche component to this game, even a team psyche.

It will be interest to see if that happens.

  98. Drivenbyjeter2 September 20th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

I really really HATE living in FL being a Yankee fan when the Yankees play the Rays. There is a reason why i buy the MLB Extra Innings package….So i can listen to Michael kay and paul o’Neil. I HATE the Rays station.

Can you believe that FSN Florida is starting their broadcast at 7:30 and not showing the ceremony THEN they also black out the game on the package? I can’t believe it. So upset.

What really annoys me is at the end (if they lose) they broadcaster says: “I hope you enjoy the telecast and not the outcome”….gosh so annoying.

Venting is done :) GO YANKS!! Glad to see (almost) everyone in the lineup– ehem, posada.

  99. YankFanCA September 20th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

“The only way you represent 90%+ of lohud members is representing that game-thread group who live to complain and are afraid of their own shadows.”

You’re right. You are universally beloved. You are not in the least bit self-centered or annoying. You can turn the world on with a smile. You can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.

I would actually miss Ruby Tuesday if he/she left. :)

I don’t even like the restaurant.

    Good song though.

Another not so good restaurant that’s a good song is Van Morrison’s “Domino”

  103. YankFanCA September 20th, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Don’t question why she needs to be so free. She’ll tell you it’s the only way to be. . . . Lose your dreams and you may lose your mind . . . Ain’t life unkind.

  104. CR9 September 20th, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I would miss Ruby Tuesday! He/She reminds me that Im not so bad, and that it’s better for the rest of you to read my conspiracies and my rage than read a Red Sox fan! And also that Im not so bad, because I wouldnt fathom going to another blog to taunt.

  105. MTU September 20th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

    Jeers-

    Agreed. Tunes good. Restaurant bad.

    Like the Cavemen said.

    “Fire good. Food Bad”. :)
