Phil Hughes pushed to Wednesday

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 24, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

To further limit his innings, Phil Hughes will take his next start on Wednesday. Dustin Moseley will start for the Yankees on Sunday.

Joe Girardi said there might be more changes coming as the Yankees setup their playoff rotation.

This change, though, Girardi said is strictly for Hughes’ workload. Girardi said he expects Wednesday to be Hughes’ last outing of the regular season.

ACK….Mosely ?….maybe he can pull one last wabbit out of his hat….What about Joe saying that he is doing nothing to set up playoff stuff until they are IN the playoffs ?…..Joe, what about that ??? ;-)

i never could have imagined taking a loss last night with C.C. on the mound and a lead.
    what the heck happened???

there was a chance to have a bigger lead in the standings.
splitting the series is better then losing the series, but the Yankees had a great chance to take 3 of 4

tonight is the night to get back on the winning track

  4. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 24th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

    Moseley, I mean (oops)

  5. m September 24th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Are ye kidding? I’m all for “resting” him, but Moseley? Yeeks.

Let’s “back in” by winning the first two. :)

Mosely and Nova against the Sox… ouch.

  7. Warning Track Power September 24th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I’m all for saving Hughes for the playoffs because of the innings limit, but why Mosely?
Where is Javy? Is he not a starting pitcher?

    I was being sarcastic above

I do not approve of hit batters

Yeah, I know – Moseley’s clock has probably struck midnight. But at least he pitched the other night so he’s not stone cold. :?

Mitre must be hurt or sick or something. He used to be someone Girardi would go to in certain situations and he is no longer the one.

Look what I just ordered as a Xmas present for my husband (and a little bit for myself). It combines two of his favorite pastimes – the Yankees and Disney:

  22. BIG AL September 24th, 2010 at 4:34 pm

What the hell, if Joe is giving Moseley Hughes start, whu not go all the way and let Andrew Brackman start. Can’t be any worse than Moseley, IMO.

I totally laughed out loud when I saw the end of your link was “urine”. LOL

So what you’re saying is two fantasy pastimes?

  25. Bronx Jeers September 24th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

    Doreen,

I’ve never been to Disney so I’m a bit indifferent to Mickey Mouse etc. but I’ll admit that figurine is pretty cool!

  26. Erica in NY September 24th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Before the other night, Moseley hadn’t pitched in 10 days.

Do you think he could have maybe been rusty??

Now that he is going to start Sunday after actually pitching a few innings in a game, hopefully some of the rust is gone

  27. Cashmoney September 24th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Did they model that swing after Joltin Joe? or the Mickey figurine in general.

This isn’t just a innings saving move for Phil Hughes…it also means that he will pitch game #2 of the playoffs since if all goes well CC’s last game will be Tuesday, Hughes Wednesday and Pettite Friday..so CC, Hughes and Andy in the ALDS

this also means hopefully no AJ at least in the ALDS and even better no Cervelli – Hip Hip Jorge!!!

  34. CountryClub September 24th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

The plan is for CC to not pitch Tuesday. If the Yanks clinch over the next 4 games, CC will be pushed to Friday.

  35. CountryClub September 24th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

benshpigel Hughes bumped to wed, moseley starting sunday. More rotation changes after clinch, including cc to friday in boston, lining up for alds gm 1

  36. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 24th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

No Way,… our rotation will be CC, Andy, Hughes, AJ……bet on it ! ( and AJ won’t pitch unless absolutely needed, IMHO )

    Big Al -

Oh, yes. My husband’s fantasy is to retire to Disney World and get any job there at all. :)

I found this in a coupon insert in my newspaper the other day. Which I usually just toss out. I couldn’t resist it. Big Al, I think your grandson will get a kick out of it.

This is the first of a collection – the next one is a pitcher and I’m not sure which Disney character it will be. But it’s going to be a whole lineup and they did say Donald Duck is going to be the catcher. I don’t know what players they may have used as “models.” It just said the collection was a tribute to the 27-time WS champions. :)

  38. Cashman needs to go September 24th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Sorry I hadn’t read the proposed changes for CC – so i guess once they clinch a spot its the Wild Card for the yankees – not sure if that is the smart thing to do but hey its not my job on the line..

  39. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 24th, 2010 at 4:52 pm

This is about the remaining schedule. Does the Yankee have a tough schedule? Yes. Is it smart to underestimate the Mariners, Orioles, and Kansas City, aka the spoilers? No. Nobody in the AL save Minny is on any kind of a hot streak over their last 10 games. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standin....._standings

That said, I would think that the Rays end up fresher than the Yanks going into the playoffs due to the fact that the Yankees have the tougher schedule. Even if the Ys take the division, they will probably have had to work harder than the Rays.

We’ve limped in before and won it all.

Dedicating the season to GMS, I think the script should play out the following way: the Yankees clinch by beating the Suxers and then end up kicking the Rays’ butt in the ALCS. That’s what you call killing two birds with one stone.

Always able to fgind a positive spin, I remain

    THE HEAD CHEERLEADER!!!

    :)

  41. Captain Clutch September 24th, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Since Moseley is pitching on Sunday the Yanks would have to win tonight and tomorrow to clinch this weekend against the Sox. The wild card is locked up but doing it against those nasty Sox would make it a little sweeter. Lester is usually tough on them so tomorrow’s game will be tough but it will be a good test for Nova against the middle of their lineup.

I’m a believer in playing for the division.

I don’t think its wise to get into any kind of losing mentality pre-October.

In 2005 Torre made a genius decision to start Jaret Wright in the nightcap of a double header in Boston after the Yankees had already clinched the division in the day game earlier. Wright pitched against Schilling, the Yankees were predictably hammered, and lost home field advantage to the Angels because of it.

They had to fly cross country to Anaheim to play game five of the ALDS that year and were once again, predictably hammered.

if wednesday is hughes last start of the year and he’s pitching the 3rd game of the ALDS he’ll have like 11 days off – AND if the yankees are the WC he’ll be pitching it at yankee stadium…..not a good recipe for success based on hughes history this year..of course the postseason usually isn’t anything like the regular season but still its pretty bad numbers when hughes has extra rest and pitches in YS….

They’re not going to announce the precise order until they know if they have HFA, right? Or maybe it doesn’t really matter anyway.

CC does really well at YS, but he’s CC, he can pitch anywhere. Same with Pettitte. Hughes gives up HRs at YS. And AJ can’t pitch anywhere (I sorta kid).

  59. Irreverent Discourse September 24th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

doreen – i think of all the games i went to, i saw moseley twice, pettitte like 5 times, and i think i saw vazquez/burnett once… no CC, no hughes. all sunday games.

    so disappointed :(

  60. Captain Clutch September 24th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I think Hughes should definitely start game 2 on the road. Lefties have absolutely killed him with homeruns and the small ballpark doesn’t help him. He will get worn out by Mauer and Thome. Also he hasn’t pitched well on long rest. His command is usually very bad when he isn’t on his usual rest so they will probably have to have him throw to batters inbetween starts, if that helps.

  61. clownthrowindown September 24th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Another reason to hate Javy : As a starter , Javy Big Game Vazquez has beaten the Red Sox exactly once in his two year stint with the Yankees !
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

True. But $24M CC has only beaten TB once also (in more starts!). And that may be a much bigger issue if they meet again.

Vasquez was a 4th starter and is now a goner, but the ace who has only won once in nine tries needs to step up against someone other than Baltimore.

  62. 108 stitches September 24th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

There will be some scoreboard watching tonight. The Rays are spent from the Yankee series, will be playing in front of a small crowd, and are no locks against the Mariners.

Yes, CC has had trouble with Tampa and will need to step up if they do meet in the playoffs but to say he only steps up against Baltimore is unfair. He was their rock along with Pettite in the playoffs last year. If he falls off and Pettite is thir only reliable pitcher I don’t think they make it past Minny. the guy is an ace. The Rays have just been a problem matchup. It will be interesting to see if that continues…

I think it would be more interesting for them to pitch Brackman vs Drabek when they play Toronto. Didn’t they meet in the double A postseason? Or was he is AAA? If so, I say they play the bench against him since they’ve all probably seen him. I know it won’t happen but it was an entertaining thought, at least to me.
