Rays Yankees Baseball

The Yankees have a half game lead in the American League East, but they don’t exactly hold their own destiny. If the Yankees win out and the Rays win out, the teams will finish with the exact same record. The Rays won the head-to-head series.

“It’s over with. It is what it is,” Joba Chamberlain said. “We don’t see them again, and we have to focus on Boston. They’re a tough ball club. We still have nine tough games left. We can’t worry about what happened here.”

The schedules are not remotely even the rest of the way.

Yankees
Sept. 24-26: Three games vs. Boston
Third place in the AL East, 84-68
Sept. 27-29: Three games at Toronto
Fourth place in the AL East, 77-75

Oct. 1-3: Three games at Boston
Third place in the AL East, 84-68

Rays
Sept. 24-26: Three games vs. Seattle
Last place in the AL West, 58-94
Sept. 27-29: Three games vs. Baltimore
Last place in the AL East, 61-91
Sept. 30 – Oct. 3: Four games at Kansas City
Fifth place in the AL Central, 63-89

“We have to worry about ourselves,” Mark Teixeira said. “If we’re going to get to the promised land and win another championship, we have to beat the best. If we’re going to complain about having a tougher schedule, we don’t belong in the playoffs anyway. It’s going to be a tough road, but when we get to the playoffs it’s going to be the same thing, so maybe it’s better that we’re going to get tested these last nine games.”

The Yankees need to win 2 out of 3 games this weekend then get ready for the playoffs.

  2. SJ44 September 24th, 2010 at 9:00 am

As far as Javy and the post-season roster is concerned, I agree he pitched himself off the roster last night. That was truly a horrific performance.

They are going to carry 11 pitchers.

CC, Andy, Hughes, AJ, Robertson, Joba, Wood, Logan, and Mo are locks.

    That leaves two spots.

Given the likelihood they will face the Twins in the ALDS, I think you have to give Royce Ring a real look this week.

If he passes, he has to be on the roster.

That leaves the final spot to either Nova or Gaudin.

If Ring doesn’t pass, then it’s likely both Nova and Gaudin make the cut.

  3. Yogi Mantle September 24th, 2010 at 9:01 am

The Yankees crapped the bed last night. Just as they’ve done for too many games lately.

They have not been much fun to watch.

All I can hope is that the Rays get punched out in the first round. I really can’t stand Maddon.

  4. Yogi Mantle September 24th, 2010 at 9:02 am

I think CC lost the Cy Young last night as well.

  5. JM September 24th, 2010 at 9:03 am

I think I would prefer Nova but has he ever pitched out of the bp before? Joe seems to really like Gaudin, I guess he would have the edge.

  6. blake September 24th, 2010 at 9:06 am

I think Nova has to be on the playoff roster. Doesn’t matter if he’s a rookie or not to me…he’s one of the best arms they have and he can strike people out.

  7. SJ44 September 24th, 2010 at 9:06 am

They split a four game series against a playoff team.

Most 4 game series against good teams end up in a split.

Tampa is 8-10 in their last 18 games. They aren’t setting the world on fire either.

It’s not like the season ended last night.

Get healthy and get ready for the playoffs.

The Yankees don’t have to take a back seat to anybody once the playoffs begin.

  8. upstate kate September 24th, 2010 at 9:08 am

my other concern w/ Nova is he seems to get rattled w/ men on base, so he would have to be brought in at the beginning of an inning…that being said, he certainly inspires more confidence than Javy, who I thought had been doing a better job out of the bullpen…until last night

  9. MTU September 24th, 2010 at 9:10 am

Those Lee against Price matchups should be something to see.

I hope Texas knocks off the Rays.

  10. Crawdaddy September 24th, 2010 at 9:10 am

I don’t expect Ring to show much this next 10 days or so, therefore, I expect Gaudin and Nova to make the first round playoff roster. Now, watch Girardi and Cashman pick Javy instead of Nova.

  11. MTU September 24th, 2010 at 9:12 am

I like our Pitching over the Twinkies wether it’s away or not.

And I especially want to send Pavano to a watery grave. :)

  12. Yogi Mantle September 24th, 2010 at 9:13 am

After last night, I can’t imagine anyone with a working brain cell to pick Javy for the post season roster. You should have to have mop up pitchers in the post season.

  13. Bret The Hitman September 24th, 2010 at 9:22 am

Nova will be there in the post season ahead of Gaudin who sucks.

Between Gaudin and Ring I’d take Ring just because he’s a lefty and there’s a slight chance he may be used for a batter.

    Gaudin is irrelevant.

    Good morning :)

Kicking out my roommate today (30 days notice)

  14. 108 stitches September 24th, 2010 at 9:25 am

If the Yankees are to face the Twins in the ALDS, the worth of Royce Ring will be felt if a situational LH is needed in earlier innings from a bad Burnett outing. Boone Logan would be the situational LH in the 7th or 8th innings.
Can’t take the chance of overusing Logan.
Ring has 9 games to see how he’ll fit. The team is too top heavy in long relievers. The postseason is managed differently than the regular season. Every game is a sense of urgency.

  15. The Genius Maker September 24th, 2010 at 9:27 am

I would much rather see Golson than Kearns. While Kearns should hit better than Golson (he may not) Golson?s better defense is much more of a lock and his pinch runnng ability is more valuable. Golson must be on the postseason roster. Oh and so does Ring (we need a 2nd lefty)

  16. Shame Spencer September 24th, 2010 at 9:28 am

Over the last couple weeks a lot of people have complained about Girardi using Gaudin or saying how he seems to be in love with the guy, but I’ve been looking at it as Girardi testing him. IMO, Gaudin has been auditioning for his past several appearances and I don’t think Joe has gotten the results he was hoping for. Nova will pitch from the pen. They’ll use him during either AJ (more likely) or Hughes’ starts depending on whether either implodes early.

  17. sunny615 September 24th, 2010 at 9:31 am

It’s obvious after last nights game, this team needs a rest. CC, bullpen, Tex, Swish, everyone. But instead of being up 3 1/2 games now they’re in a virtual tie with both the Twins and Rays for best record. So much for cruising into the playoffs. Now they have to balance winning with resting… something Girardi has been downright pathetic at for the past two months. To say I have concerns would be an understatement.

  18. The Genius Maker September 24th, 2010 at 9:31 am

CC, Andy, Hughes, AJ, Mo, Joba, Wood, Logan, Robertson, Nova and Ring are my postseason 11 pitchers right now

I would take Nova over Mitre/Gaudin/Moseley and I want a 2nd lefty badly…even if he is there as a deterrent

  19. Bret The Hitman September 24th, 2010 at 9:32 am

    And I just did it.

    Tenant booted.

    God that felt good.

  20. JetergroundsintoanotherDP September 24th, 2010 at 9:33 am

the yanks cannot hit on the road.

the yanks lost the home field advantage.

the yanks lose in the first round.

  21. Erica in NY September 24th, 2010 at 9:33 am

Tampa Bay has some serious question marks going into the postseason.

Their starting pitching has been shaky at best

A fan poll of who should be the #2 starter after Price, had Jeremy Hellickson (the rookie) with the lead

  22. upstate kate September 24th, 2010 at 9:37 am

given that no AL team has a clear advantage, that is a benefit to the Yankees, who have been successful before…that is my story and I am sticking with it!!

    Erica
    where is your E twin?

  23. MTU September 24th, 2010 at 9:38 am

    Kate-

    Hope you’re fellin’ better. :)

  24. blake September 24th, 2010 at 9:39 am

I think the division will come down that extra game the Rays play in KC.

  25. 108 stitches September 24th, 2010 at 9:40 am

The Rays could have a letdown against Seattle similar to what they had in losing 2 0f 3 against the Angels after the last Yankee series at Tropicana Field.
Baltimore has shown that they’re no easy marks for any team.
The Rays final series in K.C. (4 games) could be what hurts the Rays the most. A split would not be a surprise.

  26. CountryClub September 24th, 2010 at 9:40 am

Kearns would have played last night if he wasnt hurt. Girardi said on the Fan that his elbow blew up bigger than any he’s ever seen after the HBP over the weekend. He prob won’t be available until this weekend.

  27. MTU September 24th, 2010 at 9:41 am

    Blake-

I don’t think so. As soon as we clinch a spot Girardi will back off the throttle and get guys rested and ready for the PS.

    But you never know.

  28. upstate kate September 24th, 2010 at 9:44 am

    feeling much better, thanks MTU

  29. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 24th, 2010 at 9:45 am

“…it’s better that we’re going to get tested these last nine games.”….yes it is, and when we come out of it with 100 wins and the AL East Championship AND HFA until the World Series, where we will SMOKE whatever NL PattyCake they serve up for us, splitting the last series of the season against a Rays team that loses in the 1st round, will mean NOTHING ! :-)

  30. SJ44 September 24th, 2010 at 9:46 am

Then if you are so sure of those three things, you have no reason to post here the rest of the season.

But, we all know that’s not going to happen.

Tonight is a Mega Millions drawing. Perhaps you should take your superior prognostication skills to that drawing.

You will whine everyday, just as you do everyday.

  31. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 24th, 2010 at 9:48 am

JetergroundsintoanotherDP, your BoSux are going nowhere this year and this pisses you off. They are coming into NY to get their @$$e$ handed to them and this will piss you off even more. The last 3 games of the season, we’ll come to YOUR HOUSE and show you how a PLAYOFF TEAM takes out a division rival to end the season. Enjoy your clam chowder, CHOWDER HEAD ! Taunting Yankees fans on a Yankees blog shows you are just the horses @$$ that your mother raised you to be.

I have been in touch with her
During the road trip she decided she needed a little blogcation.

I am hoping she’ll be back soon. I miss my younger twin

  34. blake September 24th, 2010 at 9:55 am

    MTU,
I think that because I don’t think the Rays are going 8-2 over there final 10….If the Yankees were to let’s say win 2 of 3 in each series and go 6-3 over there final 9 them Tampa has to go 7-3 to win the division…..that’s not easy to do no matter who you are playing. The Rays play an easier schedule but they do play one extra game and they have to win it….

  35. upstate kate September 24th, 2010 at 9:56 am

I hope she is back soon too…I miss her

  36. BIG AL September 24th, 2010 at 9:58 am

blake – I agree, and I think the toughest games they’ll play are against the O’s.

  37. blake September 24th, 2010 at 9:59 am

Again the odds are in Tampa’s favor but I’m not just going to conceed it to them especially since they haven’t really played all that well of late….if the Yanks go 6-3 or even 5-4 to finish up then they will have a shot….

  38. BIG AL September 24th, 2010 at 10:02 am

    MTU -

No sweep tribute, but, can we look forward to a making the post season tribute?

  39. Yankee Trader September 24th, 2010 at 10:04 am

Gaudin is awful-has given up more homers per inning than anyone on the Yankee roster.
Vazquez has not regained his velocity.
Nova would be a choice because neither the Twins or Rangers have faced him.
Ring should help, if Girardi would start using him.
The Yankees are playing now for the wildcard and will open in chilly Minneapolis.
IMO, if they lose that series, Girardi “might” not be welcome back.

  40. clownthrowindown September 24th, 2010 at 10:09 am

CC can’t beat TB and the Yankees can’t beat Lee. Big problems for them if they get past Minnesota (or get Taxas in the ALDS).

  41. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 24th, 2010 at 10:17 am

    Taxas has a team ? ;-)

  42. blake September 24th, 2010 at 10:19 am

Its true…the Yankees have no chance against “taxas”

  43. pat September 24th, 2010 at 10:21 am

    “….the Yankees can?t beat Lee”

and yet they still won a WS last year despite not beating him. Go figure!

  44. Yankee Trader September 24th, 2010 at 10:22 am

The Yankees however do pay more than their share of luxury “taxas”

  45. MTU September 24th, 2010 at 10:24 am

    Al-

    It’s always a possibility. ;)

  46. BIG AL September 24th, 2010 at 10:29 am

Got to run, I’ll catch you later.

  47. cs in la September 24th, 2010 at 10:35 am

So, Im just not really sure why everyone thinks the sky is falling. The Yankees split the series with Tampa…they won the first two games in pretty convincing fashion, the third game was a rainout and last night CC just had a bad game. It sucks to lose, but c’mon, we split.

Im more concerned about resting CC, Tex, Swish and others more than anything else. Calm down everyone, dont be so reactive.

  48. cs in la September 24th, 2010 at 10:36 am

OK, Clown, so is Lee pitching every day?

  49. Tom in N.J. September 24th, 2010 at 10:44 am

    …bitter Sox fans.

  52. ac1 September 24th, 2010 at 10:54 am

Felix is 1-3, 5.06 vs. Texas. And 0-3, 4.13 vs. LAA. So, vs. the two best teams in his division, he’s 1-6, 4.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP
    __

    I love stats….

So perfect Felix cant even pitch well against teams that see him more often. Sounds like a couple years in the AL East and the Yankees and Sox would start hammering him too…

  53. Abe Peterham September 24th, 2010 at 10:58 am

Felix can’t beat his pitching matchup, I don’t care if he loses 1-0, he was beat by a better pitcher that day… = no Cy for Felix

  54. Abe Peterham September 24th, 2010 at 11:03 am

    Doreen
    Thnx for search help!

  55. Doreen September 24th, 2010 at 11:06 am

    Abe Peterham -

    You’re welcome.

It was helpful to me during GTLU.

  56. UnKnown September 24th, 2010 at 11:16 am

The Yankees will not take a back seat to anyone once the playoffs start. Still the defending World Champs and if someone wants some they can come and get some. Coming in as the Wild Card might put a big enough chip on this team’s shoulder that gives them the added desire thats needed to prove the nay sayers wrong again and win this thing one more time.

  57. CR9 September 24th, 2010 at 11:16 am

Im so tired of seeing the name Fe-licks and Cy Young in the same sentence.

Fe-licks couldnt sniff Andy Pettitte’s jock. Face Fe-licks against real contenders and he’ll crawl right back into the shell he came out of!

  58. CR9 September 24th, 2010 at 11:17 am

    re: Edwards

What purpose does suspending Edwards serve? It doesn’t serve any purpose. Is it going to deter Edwards from drinking and driving next time? No, he is just as likely to drive drunk again, because his faculties will be altered by the alcohol like the last time.
If you guys really want the Jets to send a message to Edwards, they would have Edwards appear at Mothers Against Drunk Driving meetings and other meetings involving drunk driving, while still allowing him to play.
Does anyone really think that the message sent by the Jets is that it’s okay to drink and drive? The message sent by the Jets is “let the law do its job and we will continue to attempt to better our business and win football games”
In the week leading up to Super Bowl XLII, Randy Moss had a restraining order filed against him by a woman claiming he assaulted her. By the Patriots allowing Randy Moss to play in the Super Bowl, did the Patriots implicitly condone violence against women? If you believe that the Jets are implicitly condoning drunk driving by allowing Edwards to play, then you must also believe that the Patriots condone violence against women by allowing Moss to play in that Super Bowl. And in the case of Moss, the Patriots had a stronger case to suspend Moss, because his actions fell under the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.
