Hopefully they can get to moLester.

    RSM -

Responding to your post about the not able to talk about the Yankees record because they started off well and then cooled off – Well, you’d have to say the same about the Rays, who, if you’ll recall, got off to such a hot start that they were being compared to the 1998 Yankees. As well as the Yankees did back then, they were in second place by not an insignificant amount to the Rays. And yet, they are now within 1/2 game of each other.

Only fair to look at the whole picture there.

  3. Bill D September 25th, 2010 at 1:32 pm

“As well as the Yankees did back then, they were in second place by not an insignificant amount to the Rays”

Yankees were indeed 6 games back on 5/23. Rays were 4 games behind the Yankees on 7/23. Those were the biggest deficits for both teams.

  4. pat September 25th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

BryanHoch Yankees had Tony Dungy as a guest speaker in the clubhouse before today’s game.

Swish and Alex drop a couple of F-bombs that come through loud and clear on the TV and Dungy shows up?

  5. RSM September 25th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Doreen, I agree with you. I’m just trying to get people to stop excusing poor play because of their record.
The Yankees have played like an 84 win team for two months, and that’s mediocre. They had the best record in baseball far and away for most of the season, and may finish 4th overall. That does not speak highly of their second half. If Tampa or Boston had taken care of business, the Yankees would be going on vacation in 10 days.

  6. Rich in NJ September 25th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Dungy is a little too preachy for my tastes.

  7. pat September 25th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

“Dungy is a little too preachy for my tastes.”

He appears to back up the talk with action so I have no issue with his “preachiness”.

  8. sunny615 September 25th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Guess that should make the game interesting to say the least. Not looking like this game is going to be in the win column today. :(

  9. Doreen September 25th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

    RSM -

    I know what you’re saying.

But you can’t say “if Tampa or Boston had taken care of business,” because they didn’t. They didn’t and that’s not going to change. Those games are all over. For everyone.

And perhaps the Yankees didn’t keep up their pace since the All-Star break; but they’ve done just enough to maintain.

  10. Rich in NJ September 25th, 2010 at 1:46 pm

“He appears to back up the talk with action so I have no issue with his “preachiness”.”

I’m not saying that he is a hypocrite, only that I am not his world view.

  11. Doreen September 25th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

And are people excusing the play, or explaining the level of play or are they just pointing out that in spite of the poor play, look at where the Yankees are.

Many people bringing different nuances to their view of the situation.

I would call the Yankees level of play since Andy Pettitte went down “uneven.”

  12. RSM September 25th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

The Yankees are a very good team when they are clicking on all cylinders, but they just haven’t been doing that. Fortunately, neither has anyone else.
Partly, but not entirely, I do blame Girardi for all the inconsistency in the day to day line up.

  13. Rich in NJ September 25th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

I would call the Yankees level of play since Andy Pettitte went down “uneven.”

Which isn’t that surprising given that uneven message the manager’s moves have sent. All out for the playoffs v. not playing all out.

Not that it’s all on Girardi, but I think it’s one of several factors.

  14. Cashmoney September 25th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

When Andy went down, it threw the Yankee rotation in disarray, and this is , Because Javy Vazquez again collapsed when his team needed him the most !

The man who was brought in to provide quality innings , provided neither while taking in a cool 11.5 of Yankee dollars to furnish his wine collections in P.R.

    Thief !!!!!

  15. CR9 September 25th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Rich – It’s actually kind of nice to have one of the good guys on our side.

If Dungy had chosen the Red Sox for his preachiness, Id call him a scumpile! :)

  16. RSM September 25th, 2010 at 1:56 pm

    Doreen,
Yes, people have been using the record as an excuse. I am not saying you personally. But at least five times a day I see a poster get jumped on verbally for criticisms with the defense being “that can’t be true, they have the best record in baseball, you’re an idiot”
I’m just pointing out the weakness in that position.
    :)

  17. Tar September 25th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

“The Yankees are a very good team when they are clicking on all cylinders, but they just haven’t been doing that. Fortunately, neither has anyone else.

I can not think of one extended period of time, where the team has been all healthy at the same time.

Except for now. I see a freight train gathering steam just in time for the post-season.

If the pitching staff can get it together, watch out.

  18. Rich in NJ September 25th, 2010 at 2:01 pm

    CR9

    We’re all good guys! ;)

  19. RSM September 25th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Losing HFA in the playoffs hurts us. However, if our starters pitch well and we get a few breaks….it can happen.

  20. m September 25th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

    pat,

I like dungy a lot better now. Of course I didn’t like him when he was coaching. He was stiff when he first started tv analysis. And then he was Deacon Dungy with Michael Vick.

But he is much better now. He must be more comfortable and that genuine person thing is more evident.

There was a funny moment I think they mentioned that Dungy talked with somebody, and the asked him about the foul language.

  21. m September 25th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

I just love how the players have to be instructed to play hard. Really!

  22. Ruby Tuesday September 25th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

  24. Benny Blanco September 25th, 2010 at 2:17 pm

    Hey….Curtis in the last 7 days… 308 BA 400OBP 769 SLG, with 4 hrs and 11rbi.

  25. m September 25th, 2010 at 2:17 pm

You’re going to ‘win’ some and you’re going to lose some. For the Yankees, they didn’t lose more than 3 in a row until last week. They were the last team in baseball to do it.

The Yankees recent failures are not on Girardi. Injuries and players failing to get it done.

The pitchers gave it up in the last two games. Otherwise it’s the players. The biggest culprit lately has been Tex. But that’s okay, because he’s a valuable member of this team. The rest should be good enough to pick up the slack.

A sac fly here or there wouldn’t hurt either.

  26. Bill D September 25th, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Guess the Asshattery Festival just ended.

  27. Doreen September 25th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

    RSM -

    Not all people though.

It’s a weak position only if you’re denying their level of play has been different than it was. Which it has been. But if you’re just trying to point out that in spite of that, they managed to maintain the best record in baseball, that’s a fair statement.

I’d venture to say that there are only a handful of people here who would blithely dismiss the difficulties they’ve had since the trade deadline or Andy Pettitte’s injury (August 1st on).

And then there are are the people who are simply trying to maintain a positive outlook and will dig in their heels to fight off the barrage of “woe are the Yankees” posts when all they have to do is look at the standings and see that the Yankees were still in first or no more than a 1/2 game out. And that can’t be argued with.

And to many, it really doesn’t matter how many wins they have or how many they could have had. What matter is will they or won’t they be in the playoffs. That is the bottom line and all the rest is “noise” – all the chatter, both negative and positive. A way for fans to involve themselves in something over which they have no control.

And there is enough evidence over the years to show that it is indeed a clean slate once the post-season starts, says that all the handwringing or cheerleading in the world will have no bearing. :)

  28. LGY September 25th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

    I don’t like Dungy.

  29. The Phenom September 25th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Only a matter of time before the Keyboard Warriors show up proclaiming their managerial genius, accurate 20/20 hindsight, and general stupidity….ruining the game and pregame threads. Heck, they ruin most threads.

  30. theREALkevin September 25th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

I love how golson comes thru with a ringing double against david price, starts a rally and scores a run, and then is benched inexplicably for kearns who has done nothing but choke time after time in big spots. And girardi bats him ahead of curtis granderson??? Smooth

  31. The Phenom September 25th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Kevin is the first Keyboard Warrior! Congratulations, Kevin on the first line-up complaint. Clearly you are a better manager than Joe Girardi. It is astonishing the Yankees won last year without your leadership. Truly astonishing. You, sir, are a Keyboard Warrior!!!

  32. Doreen September 25th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

    m -

Yes, the Art of the Sac Fly. Isn’t there a motivational speaker for that????

  33. Bill D September 25th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    REALKevin:

Kearns will be on the postseason roster. Golson probably won’t be. Need to give Kearns the opportunity to face some LHP’s before the regular season is out.

  34. m September 25th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Girardi probably asked Dungy to work in some sacks/sacs analogy. :)

How it can stop a drive or something. Or fail to if not executed properly.

  35. Bret The Hitman September 25th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I’m going wine tasting tomorrow, every excited.

An old flame has agreed to picnic and wine taste with me.

We’re going as friends but I want her back.

I’m preparing spicy breakfast sausage from the local farmer’s market and organic Omega3 eggs from Trader Joe’s. I will bring organic strawberries and a couple organic peaches. I’ll bring some bottled mineral water too.

The wine doesn’t really go with breakfast but who cares?

    We’ll be buzzed!

I think Joe has done a great job considering.

    Nick Johnson disappeared.

    Javy imploded.

Granderson struggled most of the year.

Pettitte missed a bunch of time.

    Arod missed a month.

Posada is breaking down and he had to go with Cervelli.

Jeter had a career worst year.

    Burnett imploded.

  36. Doreen September 25th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Can you “bench” a bench player??

    ;)

    Not bad, m.

  39. Tar September 25th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

“ruining the game and pregame threads.”

Attacking people as opposed to disagreeing and stating why, is also a big factor in “ruining the game thread”. ( exception for matt )

    theREALkevin

Joe has to see what he has in Kearns. Now is the time.

Lester is a tough LH pitcher, that is why Kearns is batting ahead of Grandy.

  40. TheStraw September 25th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Of course, they should have both Kearns ad Golson on the ps roster at the expense of one of those dog meat middle relievers. But I’m not sure this will happen.

  41. TheStraw September 25th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Actually phenom, realkevin is one of the most positive posters on here.

  42. CR9 September 25th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Rich – You’re a good guy…..even though you think it’s inhuman to wish injury on players. :)

  43. Nick in SF September 25th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

I might be the most genuinely positive poster on this site.

    But I’m not sure.

  44. CR9 September 25th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Im the most genuinely positive poster on this site – positive that the umpires, other teams, and the media are out to get us! :P

I had a long discussion with one of my long-time best friends – a non-sports fan – last night about the conspiracies against us. Of course, he denied each of my conspiracies.

He did, however, agree that it was distasteful for fans to attack the Steinbrenners for the way they chose to memorialize their patriarch.

He even went as far as to say that the loser on this site that said the size of the monument was meant as a political statement was theorizing a conspiracy! Does the loser that said it was political have any proof of such. NOPE! Just a conspiracy! Loser!

  45. The Phenom September 25th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

How was what he typed positive? Complaining about a kid with zero experience on the bench versus a guy with a track record?

Tar – that’s not attacking, that is pointing out one of many line-up complainers. Explaining the obvious is a waste of time to the Keyboard Warriors who know more than Girardi and Cashman and talk tough, of course, to back it up.

The thoughtful, thought-provoking baseball discussions are few and far between. The salad days of ’07 when Rebecca, SJ,CB, Dr. Acula, and all would have some great discussions are long gone and it is sad.

  46. TheStraw September 25th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    Phenom-

Not saying that comment was positive, just that the majority of his posts are. The baseball discussion is still here, but it unfortunately gets subverted by the “keyboard warriors”. They are just a bunch of whiney brats who think the Yankees are entitled to win 120 games every year by ten runs a game.

“Dungy is a little too preachy for my tastes.”

So the word of God, and those that live by it, is not in your taste?

    That’s a shame.

  48. TheStraw September 25th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Kearns is a veteran bat who could come through in the playoffs if he gets going. I would also like to see Golson there for late inning D and pinch running. They both have way more value than someone like Mosely or Javy at this point.

  49. Nick in SF September 25th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Big Al, to answer your question from before again, I don’t think that the Yanks will go after a big ticket outfielder and will stick with Gardner, Granderson, and Swisher, but if they go get one, they’ll go for Crawford, so I would like to wager $25 with you that they don’t sign Werth this off-season.

  50. Cashmoney September 25th, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Big Al – If someone decides that a person that preaches the word of God is not in their taste, then that is THEIR RIGHT. It’s not a shame or something that should be insulted.

Rich NEVER said that the word of God and those that live by it are not in his taste. You just exaggerated his entire statement.

My word of God is the word of the New York Yankees. And that’s not a shame! :)

You lack the ability to understand the most common knowledge this world has to offer, and dwell in a fantasy world of umpires out to get the NNY, so how could you possible relate to Tony Dungy, or anyone like him.

Go back on your drugs and sit in a corner.

What do you think a person was referring to when they say, He’s too preachy for them, I believe that indicates they do not care for a person that speaks of God, and is not ashamed to share His word with others. That’s all I’ll say on this matter.

    Unfortunately for you, you’re wrong!

I appreciate Tony Dungy for his ethics and for helping a Michael Vick though most everyone likely turned their backs on him.

You misinterpreted what Rich said. What Rich said was that Dungy was “too preachy.” That does not mean in any way, shape, or form that Rich does not care for a person that speaks of God.

Who gives a flying rats … anyway. Rich is not mandated to believe in God, or like people who preach the word of God. In closing, who gives a flying rats …. about God??? You’re on a Yankees site, care about the real Lord and Savior, the New York Yankees :)

It was be absolute lunacy if Vazquez or Gaudin are part of the playoff rosters. The fact that they are veterans counts for nothing based on perfomances. Neither will suddenly be unhittable vs. the Twin, Rangers, or a National league team. They are what they are. The numbers say so.
