Hughes steps up and the Yankees walk off

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Sep 27, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Last night, it was Alex Rodriguez who said the Yankees needed a starting pitcher to step up. Tonight Phil Hughes did exactly that, but it wasn’t until Juan Miranda drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning that the Yankees had a 4-3 win that cut their magic number to one. They also pulled within a half game of the Rays in the American League East. A home run by Rodriguez and six strong innings from Hughes had the Yankees on the verge of a win before a wild ninth inning that saw them blow a lead, then come back to tie.

Great win, but the stolen bases may be an indication of a very big problem.

  2. Frozen Rope September 27th, 2010 at 12:03 am

all you Jesus Montero fans, take note of Yankee catchers not being able to throw anyone out tonight – you really looking forward to the possibility of another 10 plus years of baserunners running wild on the Yankees if Montero can somehow stick as a catcher??

  4. blake September 27th, 2010 at 12:04 am

Hughes was great tonight and that reinforced that it was in fact the right decision to start him in this game. Robertson, Arod, and Cano also get gold stars.

Big win for the Yankees. Maybe now they can relax and get some momentum going towards October.

  5. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:04 am

Phil came up huge – I guess this was the biggest start of his career. He pitched well in Tampa (except for 2 pitches) and pitched well against Tampa here……..now against the Sox. That’s VERY encouraging.

    YES post game show!!!!

  6. pat September 27th, 2010 at 12:04 am

Amen. This would have been a bad loss.

  9. blake September 27th, 2010 at 12:05 am

The stolen bases were mostly off Rivera who for some reason just totally disregarded the fact that they were there….I don’t know what was going on there but Mo just looks uncomfortable out there at times….still have faith in him though.

  10. BBFan September 27th, 2010 at 12:05 am

    YES is on with postgame.

  11. pat September 27th, 2010 at 12:06 am

Loud exhale from Girardi on the postgame

  12. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:06 am

The stolen bases aren’t a problem if Mo just holds the runners.

On all four SB’s he didn’t even look at the baserunners or hold the ball a little longer.

That’s a simple adjustment to make.

He spent too much time concentrating on the hitters.

Johnny Bench couldn’t have thrown those runners out.

Get one more win and get the pitching in order for the playoffs.

Perhaps this team will relax now.

They have been tight as a drum for far too long this month.

  13. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 12:07 am

    DUI Suspension or WIN??? WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:07 am

Phil’s command still isn’t great, but chalk that up to fatigue late in the season?

  15. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2010 at 12:07 am

The game ball belongs to Hughes, who was brilliant, Arod who was clutch, and Miranda, who was patient.

    YES YANKEES!!! YES!!!!!

CR9 – I dedicate this game to you. No more needs be said.

  16. Bronx Jeers September 27th, 2010 at 12:07 am

    Whew.

    Doomsday scenario averted.

No such thing as an ugly win but this one was about as unattractive as they come.

Great job by Phil in which will most likely be his last meaningful innings of the season.

And after Arod basically threw down the gauntlet yesterday he put his money where his mouth is.

When they operated on his hip they must have installed an extra set of nuts in him because since he came back from that he’s been absolutely lethal in big spots. No fear.

  17. Rich in NJ September 27th, 2010 at 12:07 am

“The stolen bases aren’t a problem if Mo just holds the runners.”

    And that will change because?

  18. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:08 am

I almost forgot about Alex – the guy is a beast.

  19. JD September 27th, 2010 at 12:08 am

What a ballgame. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Good test for the post season. That game had a play-off feel to it. Wow Yanks vs. Sox = rarely disappointed. Great win. One step closer to clinching a spot. Punch that ticket. Go Yankees!

  20. Nobody Is Perfect September 27th, 2010 at 12:08 am

A-rod will pass Griffey next season.

  21. igotid88 September 27th, 2010 at 12:09 am

Did they end the pie thing? That stinks. That’s the best part of the walk off besides the win.

  26. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Mo, I think, is mentally exhausted and I think that accounts for his lack of attention to the baserunners. He needs to be rested from now until mid-Boston series – at least.

  27. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

WELCOME TO THE POSTSEASON NEW YORK YANKEES

There is no way they don’t make the postseason. The Jays are pitching all rookies. Ozzie will not roll over for the Sux. It’s a matter of time. I predict tomorrow night, no question.

    Hey, anyone seen Ruby Tuesday???

  28. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Hughes was amazing tonight. What a great performance from him tonight when they really, really needed it.

  29. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

I literally could not watch the game, and followed along only with Chad’s updates – didn’t read the comments at all.

My heart has been pounding for about an hour!

Sorry to admit I’m such a chicken – and I didn’t want to listen to the ESPN guys.

Anyway GREAT win, and it sounds like Hughesy did the job. Yay.

  30. Tyler September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Rivera always has been poor holding on runners but that is to be expected being a closer. I think the thing he’s always done is strand those baserunners in scoring position with less than 2 outs. He has that knack for the perfect pitch in those scenarios to get the guy to pop up or weakly ground out. That’s what he has to find again.

  31. Tar September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 am

“No such thing as an ugly win but this one was about as unattractive as they come.”

Sometimes it’s good to be humbled.

Bonus points for also walking away with a win. :D

  32. Rich in NJ September 27th, 2010 at 12:11 am

Why would Mo be mentally exhausted, he hadn’t pitched in almost a week.

  33. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:11 am

Mo doesn’t need a lot of work to be sharp – we see that when he hardly pitches in ST and comes into the regular season in top form. Give the guy a break, period end of story.

  34. cs in la September 27th, 2010 at 12:11 am

that win was so huge. I was picturing going into Fenway needing to win one more next weekend. The stress would have been unbearable.

But now, thats just a nightmare. Lets go Yankees.

  35. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 12:11 am

I am really concerned about Mo for the play offs. Obviously 4 stolen bases didn’t help but he missed his spots too many times. Lowrie just missed a homerun, he tried to go inside to Scutaro and Hall and to both batters he got too much of the plate. He hasn’t pitched in days so he shouldn’t be tired. Maybe he has a little injury? Or at 40 it’s fatigue from a long season but he didn’t look good at all.

  36. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:12 am

This was a beautiful win tonight – like a splatter painting instead of an Impressionist painting, but still beautiful.

  37. steve sax arm September 27th, 2010 at 12:12 am

  40. Jim September 27th, 2010 at 12:12 am

I don’t understand why Joe didn’t force Vmart to play more defense in this series. He’s the weak link and they should have been running and bunting all series long – if for no other reason than to guarantee the Sox can’t afford to sign him and Ortiz next year.

  41. Tyler September 27th, 2010 at 12:12 am

    CR9-

Told ya they would play Edwards often ;) .

Still don’t like the guy but he looked good tonight. He has a ton of physical tools. He just has some of the worst hands in the game which is disappointing for a guy that talented. Plus, he’s a complete knucklehead.

And how about my Rams! First home win since 2008. All hail Sam Bradford!

    ————————-

the way he’s going he could do it by Sunday.

  43. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:12 am

Rich, he’s old and it’s a long season………….I think he’s mentally exhausted and again, that would explain him not being mentally sharp enough to pay attention to the runners. It’s just a theory…………seems as sound as any.

  44. JD September 27th, 2010 at 12:13 am

“I am really concerned about Mo for the play offs.”- Don’t be.

  45. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:13 am

It will change Rich because any pitcher can throw over to first, hold the ball a tick longer, or look the runner off.

Unlike AJ, who is long to the plate, Mo is quick to the plate.

It’s not a big adjustment to make.

  46. yanksfansince67 September 27th, 2010 at 12:13 am

    I can sleep tonight!

only a half game behind the Rays

Hughes is the player of the game, Arod a close second. Mo is ok, he has not pitched regularly.

CR9 – you are right, they can breathe now, I am one of the few who find you entertaining.
Girardi made some questionable moves but no time for that, they won a game!
    A big game.

    and the Jets won too!

I dont know and really don’t think we can win it all again this year but at least we didn’t have an epic collapse and maybe going in as not the favorite but one of 5-6 teams with a chance to win it all will take the pressure off and have us playing free and easy??

  51. Rich in NJ September 27th, 2010 at 12:14 am

    SJ

What about the steal(s) of 3B?

  52. BIG AL September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

    A great, much needed win.

Phil pitched well enough for a win, and kept his team in the game, great game YMH.

A-Rod continues to display his assume power, hitting into very strong winds that were blowing everything towards the infield.

A rough 9th, but the end result makes that a moot point. Mo will not do that in the post season.

Let’s hope this game is the beginning of their push to #28.

  53. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

Phil is absolutely the player of the game, but let’s see what YES fans voted, lol.

  54. BBFan September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

Glad ot see every one having good time including all the negative Nancies during the game thread.

Now Girardi will rest the players and align the rotation.

I am not giving up on the division yet.
We are down by only half a game.

  55. tyanksfan36 September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

Yes Trisha, this win is devoted to you who kept the faith in the team and drove that faith in to all of us(myself included) who were being a doubting thomas. The Yankees can definitely clinch by midweek and I think they’ll do well in the post season. They’ve definitely taken some of the stress out of a few fans.

  56. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

    Mo isn’t mentally exhausted.

He has to pitch. He hasn’t pitched in 4-5 days.

He needs to pitch at least 2-3 more times this week to get his sharpness back.

  57. BA September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

Thank goodness Girardi or maybe it was Cashman smartened up and started Hughes. Big game by him in a big spot.

Now if good AJ shows up tomorrow (like he appeared to be before the rain last timeout), they can get it over with. Then it will be time to rest and rearrange the rotation.

  58. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 12:15 am

  68. Tyler September 27th, 2010 at 12:19 am

    CR9-

Talking about his behavior on the field. He can be a knucklehead. Almost got 2 big unsportsmanlike penalties against the Pats last weekend.

Plus, he really could have killed somebody driving drunk. He’s very lucky that he didn’t. Just hope he learns from it. If he does then it will truly just be a mistake.

  69. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:19 am

The steals of third were all on Mo.

He let both baserunners get too large of a secondary lead.

It’s like getting a running start.

What you do is, hold the ball a little longer and that freezes the baserunner.

You also have to look at the runner before delivering the pitch. That also freezes the runner.

The Red Sox took advantage of those mistakes tonight.

However, those are easy adjustments for Mo to make.

  70. Jerkface September 27th, 2010 at 12:19 am

A performance like tonight is something that Hughes can provide in the postseason, he has shown it at the beginning of the year and now late, that he can pitch quality innings. A ’5 era’ after the ASB belies many of the good games he has had.

  71. Bronx Jeers September 27th, 2010 at 12:19 am

    And Papelbon?

I hope he gets a 10 year deal.

He really could get non-tendered at this point because he’s awful and expensive but I’ll pray for that deal.

  72. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 12:20 am

Whew, I was in the Bronx stuffing Javy in a duffel bag , A WIN!

  73. Bret The Hitman September 27th, 2010 at 12:20 am

Arod had a clutch home run but his walk was the real game winner. To lay off that off speed stuff from Papelbon on a 3-2 count? Wow. He was in the zone there.

I worry about Mo losing it.

Nothing that a little Soria can’t fix. I think Cash needs to find a way to acquire him in the off season. In the meantime, Joba really needs to step up and Wood needs extra rest.

I think Posada is really more of a DH now but I feel positive about Cervelli.

Robinson Cano? He’s the MVP. Gold glove middle infielder with those numbers and clutch hits like tonight’s game tying knock? He’s such a force.

When a cast off like Miranda contributes in a big way in a big game like this, it awakens every player to his own value to the team. Everyone needs to calm down, think small and make that contribution and this team can still come together and be dominant in the playoffs. Every individual who has been pressing out there trying to do too much by himself needs a little reminder every now and then that this is a team sport and contributions of all sizes make all the difference in the world in the end.

This was obviously a huge win. Now they can rest the guys on turf, especially Cano for a game. Hughes and CC can be moved to whatever days they have to, to be set up for the play offs. The division would be nice but Toronto plays the Yanks hard and if the Yanks are fighting Tampa for the division those games will be very tough to win in Boston. So basically I would rest guys and not worry about the division. Using up all of their energy this week is not worth it.

Before tonights game, Girardi had a .593 winning % with the Yankees, and still there are those on this blog that think he can’t manage the team.

Joe is doing a good job under very difficult situations with players that are injured, and those that need more than usual rest. He has to balance a lot of factors none here have any knowledge of, yet believe they could all do a better job.

That would be like asking the check-out person at Walmart to give an opinion on brain surgery, they can give an opinion, but who would you trust, your surgeon, or the clerk?

Me, I trust the pro, not the wana be’s.

  87. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:23 am

    Hughes came up huge tonight.

That was a playoff type game and he delivered bigtime.

The whole key is getting into the playoffs.

Limping to the finish doesn’t matter if you get in.

It only matters if you don’t.

That’s why tonight was a must win game.

  88. igotid88 September 27th, 2010 at 12:23 am

  89. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 12:23 am

  90. Tar September 27th, 2010 at 12:23 am

I actually don’t think Paps pitched that badly.

Credit goes to Tex and Swish for starting that inning. Also big AB for Alex taking that walk to set-up Cano’s hit.

  91. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 12:23 am

  93. CB September 27th, 2010 at 12:24 am

Alex’s home run. Cano’s hit. Robertson’s houdini act. Miranda walk.

    All huge.

But the primary story of this game – the hero of this game – was Hughes.

Hughes has been killed by Yankee fans for much of the season. ERA of 5 since mid-season, too many home runs, too many fastballs, doesn’t give length and best of all – he’s just doesn’t have the stuff to be an ace.

But during a time when the team is playing very tight and struggling who has been the only starting pitcher to step up? Phil Hughes.

Look at how enormous Hughes has been his last two starts – during a time when CC happened to have a poor start his turn and the rest of the rotation continued to be mediocre to poor. Hughes doesn’t have his best stuff against Tampa – but guts out his start, gets stronger and wins the game for the yanks. If Hughes collapses that start when he was fighting his command this team loses 3 out of 4 to the Rays rather than splitting. Splitting the series wasn’t great – to lose that series would have been terrible.

And tonight – the Yankees can say all they want no long man, etc. But that doesn’t wash. They changed schedules – something they don’t like to do – because they felt that it was very important to win this game because it knocks 2 games off their magic number for the playoffs. They don’t win this game and they really start reeling.

Even more importantly – losing this game would have ruined much of their entire strategy this past month. They’ve been trying to prioritize rest. They lose this game they potentially have to push very hard down the end of the season and might have to do so in Boston that last series.

Hughes threw a gem again tonight. On a night where you could tell the offense was in the doldrums again and wasn’t going to score a lot Hughes had to take the mound every inning knowing he needed to be perfect.

Can’t say enough about how good he was tonight. If the Yankees starting pitcher even gives up 2 runs tonight they most likely lose this game. Give up 3 and they almost definitely would have.

A 24 year old pitcher started the Yankees only 2 wins over the past 6 starts and did so against the Rays and the Sox and did so during a period when both CC and Andy faltered terribly.

Sharpness or not, Mo is a concern. Pitch him more–I like that, since pitching him less isn’t working all too well.

The mark of the last 15 years has been winning when ahead after 7 innings. Let us look at the past 3 weeks:

9/10: up 6-5 in Texas in the bottom of the 8th, Joba blows the save.
9/11: up 6-5 in Texas bottom of the ninth, Mo blows the save.
9/15: up 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to the Rays, Hughes gives up a 2 run HR.
9/19: up 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth in Baltimore, Mo blows the save.
9/26: up 3-2 in the top of the ninth, Mo blows the save.

That’s 4 out of 5 losses when leading after 6.2. Maybe Girardi has something up his sleeve, but couple that with fatigue on CC’s part and Andy trying to get his form back, and I think there are serious concerns.

They have enough power to win, but as we all know it’s pitching that does it in the PS.

Mo has carried this franchise on his back for 15 years. He’s 40. As much as I hate to say this, is it the beginning of the end?

Guys, I agree with the Hughes comments. I also think CC and Andy will find it. Starters won’t be the issue, nor will middle relief.

    Is anyone concerned about Mo?

  101. GreenBeret7 September 27th, 2010 at 12:26 am

The 2000 team had the same issues. The pitching stalled when they got the hitting and the hitting stalled when they got the pitching. Both teams had a lot of players that were nicked up….just not bad enough to miss games, but, enough to mess with their proficiency.

That was me making all those comments, but I was wrong, dead wrong. Tampa, Tampa, Red Sox -all good performances and this one the best because he had zero margin for error and this was as close to a must win as it can possibly get.

  105. Bronx Jeers September 27th, 2010 at 12:27 am

Mo will pitch a couple of innings next week. Just some tune-up innings like he would in late March.

This was such a big win for them. AJ can still help his team tomorrow and put this thing to rest.

As much as I doubt the Sox will sweep in Chicago it would be better if the Yanks could put themselves in.

Per the request of Ken and Vineyard here is a re-post from last night. A little comic relief after that tension filled nail biter! Nite all and go Yankees!!!

Cut To Interior Yankees Clubhouse After Loss To Boston:

Girardi: (Theatrically unscrewing top of water bottle) Marky?

Mark Feinsand: (meekly) Well, um, uh, what did you think of Nova’s performance?

Girardi: I liked Novey’s effort. You don’t understand how hard it is to pitch from the stretch. Ever try it? Try tweeting from the stretch. Kim?

Kim Jones: (stuttering) Joe. Some are sa-sa-sa-saying you are using Gaudin too-too-too much. Not me-me-me of course, you know, Pete Abraham probably.

Girardi: (Theatrically unscrewing top of water bottle) Get her the hell outa’ here!

Ben Shpigel: (whispering nervously) Joe you lose weight? You look good. Uh, I’m not suggesting it was uh a mistake, but, what about Thompson sending Kearns.

Girardi: I liked the play, Kearnsey tried his best. It was a hell-of-a throw. Ever try to throw a ball to home plate from the outfield? Carig?

Mark Carig: (hiding behind Jason Zillo) Uh, Joe, Sweeny Murti asked me to ask this, sorry. It’s not me asking. I think it’s a dumb question. Are you concerned with this loss? And losing 13 of 19?

Girardi: (Theatrically unscrewing top of water bottle) Are you kidding? I like how this team is playing, we’re all giving our best effort, we feel good about ourselves, it’s a long season, I believe in these guys, we could very easily have won, sometimes you get the big hit and sometimes you don’t, I thought we played fairly well. Pete?

Pete Caldera: (voice quivering) Joe, have you given any thought to your rotation for the playoffs?

Girardi: (snapping) Why, what’s it to you? Yes I am starting to. I’m a bit concerned about all the innings Sabbathia has pitched this year so I’m thinking about skipping his first start against Minnesota. I have to think long term. I need him to be ready for the Mariners next April.

(Applause and in unison) “Thanks Joe”!

    (Cut to WB Mason commercial)

    Very well said CB

Hughes has been great when he was needed the most.

Huge performance for him tonight and he should be either the Game 2 or Game 3 starter.

It was a no brainer move to start him tonight.

  109. BIG AL September 27th, 2010 at 12:28 am

Phil Hughes showed everyone tonight why the Yankees believe he will be a front line pitcher for them.

In a very tough siuation, he pitched one of his best games of the season. I’d like to see him get 1 more start to keep him in stride.

In the manager’s show before the game, Girardi indicated it was a possibility he might get 1 more game. Even if it’s a 4 inning stint, that should be all he would need to keep in rythem.

Against Texas when Mo blew a game there was a fast runner on 1st and Mo threw a pitch right down the middle to Cruz and he hit a double and Mo said after the game that he couldn’t get the runner at 1st off his mind and that made him lose focus to the batter. I wonder why all of a sudden Mo is worrying about baserunners? They never seemed to bother him before where it effected his pitching.

  122. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2010 at 12:34 am

YANKEES – I’m not worried about Mo. Here is why. Because the Yankees had such an erratic offensive season, Mo didn’t close out his usual number of games. And because the starting pitching was so shaky, Mo didn’t get to pitch in many gratuitous games either. Usually he would be pulled in every so often just to get him work, but that hadn’t been the case much this season.

I believe he will be just fine in the postseason.

You can take that to the bank.

They should at least let Hughes throw an inning or 2 in Boston so he is sharp for the play offs. Otherwise he could have 12 days off between starts and facing batters. Hughes should pitch game 2 but knowing Girardi he will go with AJ instead.

  138. CB September 27th, 2010 at 12:39 am

CC is great – but the Yankees have counted on him much too much the past two years.

If he happens to have a bad turn through the rotation the team becomes vulnerable for having a rough patch.

The team has literally been dependent on CC being close to perfect for them to succeed over time.

Andy’s still great but at his age he’s not a guy you can count on to relieve some of the load off CC and give the team another pathway to win.

The past three turns through the rotation – Phil Hughes has done exactly what you hope that a plus #2 starter would do pitching behind an ace like CC.

Just huge. He’s been getting better steadily all year even when his ERA was going up because he was learning.

And right now all of that learning is paying off.

The last start against Tampa may have been the best Hughes has ever thrown his change. Tonight it may have been even better.

  139. Bret The Hitman September 27th, 2010 at 12:39 am

Robertson was clutch. I wonder if he thrives on pressure. He seems to. Granderson is lethal. I agree with everyone who thinks he’ll be a real weapon in the post season. I knew he was going to get a hit off Okajima to lead off the 10th. I just knew it. I have so much confidence in him. He has the kind of swing that can catch up to power pitcher stuff and playoff pitching. He will be big for us – same with Berkman.

  140. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2010 at 12:39 am

“If Sabathia wins the first game, regardless of who they play, I’d seriously consider Hughes for Game #2 and Pettitte in Game #3.”

I’d like the team to try to throw the lefties at Yankee stadium as much as possible as it’s just a real advantage with the short right field.

If they start on the road I’d throw CC game 1 and Hughes game 2. I’d save Andy for game three at home to get at least one left hander at the stadium. If they start at home I’d probably throw CC game 1 and Andy game 2 with Hughes game three.

But overall it’s very clear that CC, Andy and Hughes are a terrific top 3 as long as Andy rebounds which I expect he will has he recovers arm strength.

I always knew Phil had it in him to throw a good change (see ST); in fact, his curve has worried me more than the change. It’s good to see.

Curry was impressed by his competitiveness, that he wanted to get out there and pitch in a tough game against the Sox instead of in Toronto, 3 days later. It’s hard not to be.

I’m looking forward to watching the game again but I know that posting while a game is on is a double-edge sword. You sometimes miss some good plays, but you also miss some of the bad ones. I’m thinking watching those steals is still going to have a bit of a sting.

You’re probably right and I should have made that distinction. Neither Texas nor Minnesota will be push-overs. Either way, I’d like to see guys like Gardner and Jeter work on bunting for hits at least once a game. I’d also be more inclined to keep Granderson in the #2 spot and go for early instant runs. Keep Swisher lower in the order in between Berkman and Posada.

A lefty is pitching tomorrow so it’s a perfect day too give Cano his much needed and earned day off. All of the main guys should get a day off in the series because of that stupid turf.

  167. pat September 27th, 2010 at 1:09 am

    m

Alex. More subtle than the overall check but similiar.

Twilight? Like the movie? I haven’t seen it.

  168. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:09 am

M, he does tend to be a know-it-all blowhard; I hate listening to his interviews because he always interrupts his guests and tries to finish their statements. So, I just decide when he’s worth listening to or not, lol.

John Sterling is a nice guy, but I don’t listen to the radio – fortunately. His tendency to call HRs- and then wait, they’re not HRs – drives me crazy.

  169. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:10 am

So do the Yanks celebrate after one more win or in Boston? lol

  170. pat September 27th, 2010 at 1:11 am

AmalieBenjamin Papelbon blasted home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi after the game, saying he had to pitch against both the umpire and the Yankees.

  171. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:11 am

“If he’s annoying as heck, I just tune him out, lol.”

I didn’t know Francesa knew how to be anything but annoying! :P

    Goodnight All!

Thanks to the HP umpire for the fairly called game and the fairly called final 2 innings!

  172. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:11 am

Pat, lol……………….with his high ERA, Paplebon seems like he’s probably been upset at a lot of umpires this year. What a whiner.

  173. GreenBeret7 September 27th, 2010 at 1:12 am

Rodriguez would be the only one ever to reach 100 RBI and 30 homers for in 13 straight years.

  174. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:12 am

Well, if the get the WC, I don’t think they should celebrate………………but that’s a personal thing.

  175. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:12 am

Speaking of Sterling I wonder what his call was of Arod’s homerun? He probably fell out of the booth. I wonder if he knew it was a homerun and not off the wall… lol

  176. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:13 am

“AmalieBenjamin Papelbon blasted home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi after the game, saying he had to pitch against both the umpire and the Yankees.”

UNBELIEVABLE!! If that’s not the biggest JOKE Ive ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Mariano got the same non calls Pap did. WHAT A JOKE!! Who does that clown think he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if you all will blast him for being a conspiracy theorist!!!!!! Take that, you scumpile Papelbon. You couldnt handle fairness! You just wanted things in the Red Sox favor as usual!!

    BANG!!!!!!!!! DIRTPILE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  177. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:13 am

Tex and Arod both got the benefit of the doubt on some close calls.. he has a point.

  178. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:13 am

Man, I’m tired. I was going to go to sleep early tonight, but obviously that didn’t happen. I’m going to dream sweet dreams tonight…………..either that, or I’m going to have a nightmare where a giant baseball is chasing me.

  179. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:13 am

Subtle? Then it’s not Twilight plaid which is really lumberjack plaid. Just do a search for Taylor
Lautner, you’ll see what I mean.

He thought it was off the wall at first. Played it safe.

  181. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:15 am

I missed it, but didn’t Phil get squeezed earlier in the game as well?

  182. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:15 am

Papelbon can shove it, Hughes, Wood, and Mo had to pit against the umps, too.

  183. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:15 am

Cashmoney – Youve got to be kidding me!! He has NO POINT!! Mariano got 10 calls go against him in the top half of the 9th. WHAT????? He has no point!!!! Other than that he’s a worthless dirtpile!!!

  184. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:16 am

John would know from off the wall………

  185. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:16 am

Betsy – Yes. Phil got 5-10 calls that were in the same area as pitches thrown by Mariano and Papelbon that got called for balls.

  186. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:17 am

CR , there were close calls , could have gone either way IMO.

  187. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:18 am

Hughes got squeezed big time in the 7th inning when he walked 2.

  188. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:18 am

I learn Mo needs to hold baserunners on better tonight as well. Hughes did great, but Robertson saved his butt with those 2 big outs as well.

  189. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:19 am

Well, if the get the WC, I don’t think they should celebrate
    ——–

They still have 3 more games against Boston and if they mean something for the division Boston will play very hard so the divison is not likely. They definitely deserve to celebrate working very hard all season and being in the play offs. If they don’t celebrate after another win then what do they wait until the last day of the season and if they don’t win the division just fake a celebration?

  190. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:19 am

Cashmoney – Sorry, but no way. Sorry, sorry, sorry, but when the greatest reliever in the history of baseball doesnt get the same calls, then you, dirtpile Papelbon, have no right to say a damn word.

  191. tipsie September 27th, 2010 at 1:19 am

Mariano is reeling this month, no question: 6ER allowed. A win like this (albeit very ugly), to me, is almost “for” him, as he’s saved NYY’s skin SO many times.

I wouldn’t worry about him in the playoffs now, though. Remember that you have to get to the eighth or ninth inning of a playoff game with a lead (or tied, if at home) first. Then, it’s his turn. When he starts blowing things in the post-season regularly, I’ll feel differently. Until then, I’d sign up for those situations every day.

Can’t tell you how aggravating 2005-7 ALDSs were. Mo was essentially wasted. The pitching was so bad that he was rarely used.

  192. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:20 am

    Robertson was great.

  193. JobaTipsHisCap September 27th, 2010 at 1:20 am

    you gonna love A-Rod.

  194. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:20 am

PeteAbe: Papelbon says he deserves all the calls Mariano gets. Tired of uneven strike zone. He has a point.

  195. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:21 am

Mo never complains CR. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive. If Mo and Papelbon both go squeeze , does that nullify the other party the right to complain ? I see it as it is CR.

  196. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:21 am

He thought it was off the wall at first. Played it safe.
    ————

I guess it’s better to do that instead of starting the whole Alexander the great blah blah and be wrong lol

  197. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:23 am

Well, he did get the same calls, Mo was screwed as well. Even Steven.

Mo had a big smile for Miranda. If more batters took on 3-1, it’s very likely we don’t play extra innings. grrr

  198. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:23 am

This has to be some nightmare Im living in!!!!!!!!! Did that fat piece of worthless ….. Pete Abe see the top of the 9th inning???????????????????????????????????????????

What the …… is going on here????? My great night has been ruined!!!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

  200. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:24 am

OMG, is Paplebon kidding? Pete’s ………well, Pete’s sad.

  201. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:24 am

    ;) wink ;)

  202. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:25 am

Papelbum is like a 2 year old. He whines about everything, just like everyone else on that team. Yeah like Mo wasn’t squeezed also. He gave up a run because he stinks not because of the ump. He can never just say I didn’t get the job done he always has to blame it on someone. Take it like a man, what a loser.

  203. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:25 am

Clutch, good point. It’s not a big deal actually and I kind of just threw it out there. At this point, just get in the playoffs; if they want to have a pie throwing contest, that would be fine..

  204. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:25 am

So you were joking, then… You got me good. props. I nearly had a brain aneurysm :)

  205. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:26 am

I was just kidding. Don’t want to give CR9 a heart attack.

  206. theREALkevin September 27th, 2010 at 1:26 am

Don’t worry about moe. He’ll be fine. The velocity and movement was better tonight. I think he made a conscious decision to pay less attention to the runners tonight and he just went overboard. He’ll readjust. All the steals were on him except the last one- a good throw has Hall at third easily. Jorge just threw it halfway to the bag.

  207. JobaTipsHisCap September 27th, 2010 at 1:26 am

    Let’s do it tomorrow!

  208. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 am

I knew that would prompt an entertaining response from you. Especially the part where Pete Abe agrees.

  209. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 am

I am glad Bard wasn’t available tonight. He is a better pitcher than Papalbon in my mind at this point.

  210. UnKnown September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 am

Well Paps Mo got no calls tonight. And actually hasn’t been getting any for awhile now. Always has to make extra pitches and it has been hurting him.

  211. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 am

    Always excuses with Paplebon, lol

  212. CR9 September 27th, 2010 at 1:28 am

“Papelbon complained, justifiably so, about the tight strike zone of umpire Phil Cuzzi. But his strike zone had been tight for Mariano Rivera in the top of the inning when the Red Sox scored two runs.”

    Pete Abe

Would you look at that? Unbiased reporting from that …………

  213. UnKnown September 27th, 2010 at 1:29 am

    sneaky LGY

  214. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:29 am

LOL! The part where Pete Abe agrees is the part that infuriated me to no end.! On that note, Ciao!

  216. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:29 am

Oh, that was a joke? LOL

  217. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:30 am

Clutch, lol…………well then a pie eating contest. I would gladly participate in that. On that note, night all!

  218. pat September 27th, 2010 at 1:30 am

    m

Lautner’s are a bigger more casual plaid pattern.

Glen plaid is a smaller more overall plaid pattern.

Postgame video will probably be up on Yesnetwork.com later if you want to see it.

  219. theREALkevin September 27th, 2010 at 1:31 am

Cash- without question bard is the better pitcher this season and I don’t think its even that close. Agree w your post.

  220. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:31 am

You held up your end of the deal cr9 :)

I don’t know why but I can’t stop laughing at that response.

  221. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:32 am

    Confused. :?:

Pete didn’t say he must agree?

  222. m September 27th, 2010 at 1:34 am

I’ll check it out. Need to learn what glen plaid is.

  223. Bronx Jeers September 27th, 2010 at 1:35 am

Bard warmed up. Tito went with oki

  224. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:36 am

Mo has gotten a small strike zone alot recently and you never hear him say something about the umps or make excuses. I remember against Baltimore when Luke Scott hit the homerun the 1st pitch was a strike but called a ball and Mo didn’t want to get behind more so he got too much of the plate on the next pitch and Scott hit the homerun. But Mo takes it like a man and wouldn’t whine like that fool does.

  225. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 1:37 am

Hey Kev , wassup! I would equate this prolong drag out of clinching situation in the last week to worrying about being sucked out with 1 outer. You still sweat a little bit when you have 10 G riding on it. I am glad it’s almost over!
