AJ Burnett is pitching tonight AND Wednesday?!?!?!

  2. ac1 September 27th, 2010 at 11:50 am

don’t think the pen is young, our two best pitchers are Mo and Wood, 40 and 33. Joba and Robertson do not a bullpen make. Also you say Mo is in a rough patch. How exactly do you know that? It is far more likely his skills are diminishing at 40 than the other.
    __

probably because he has one of these bad months every year.

Also, how can you say it is age?

what was cano’s excuse in 2008?
What is the excuse for offense down around the league?
before pettitte got hurt, he was having his best year.
    Posada i will agree with.
Granderson and Swisher aren’t good? I think you are just looking for problems now. 25 teams would kill to have those two.

And the bullpeb IS young. just because rivera is 40 and wood is 33. there are others in there and none of them are 30.

You are just using the parts of facts that make your argument look better.

Your logic is so flawed there is just no place to begin.

  3. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 11:51 am

    AJ is a BEAST!!

  4. blake September 27th, 2010 at 11:52 am

AJ is getting abused in this series ;) one day rest.

  5. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 11:53 am

Actually, Yankees.com has Hughes pitching Wednesday. These people are slow. I’m guessing moseley or maybe one of the Gaudin/Meathead twins.

  6. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 11:53 am

    from the last post:

    Monday:
AJ Burnett, RHP (10-14) 5.05 ERA
Burnett had his last start limited to just three innings by rain, the second time in three starts he has been knocked out by weather. Burnett is 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA in five September starts after going winless in August.
    vs
Marc Rzepczynski, LHP (2-4) 5.75 ERA
Rzepczynski snapped his winless drought at six outings (0-3, 7.33 ERA) with a victory at home over the Mariners on Tuesday. The left-hander allowed two runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings and matched a season high with eight strikeouts.

    Tuesday:
CC Sabathia, LHP (20-7) 3.26 ERA
Sabathia would be on turn to make the start Tuesday, but the Yankees may push him back for rest if they clinch a playoff spot by then. Sabathia got lit up for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings Sept. 23 by the Rays in his last start.
    vs
Kyle Drabek, RHP (0-2), 4.91 ERA
Drabek is searching for his first Major League win after taking a loss at home against the Mariners on Wednesday. The 22-year-old righty — promoted from Double-A on Sept. 15 — gave up three runs on four hits (two home runs) over five innings.

    Wednesday:
Yankees.com still has Phil Hughes listed, but I’m guessing it’ll be Andy Pettitte or Dustin Moseley?
    vs
Brett Cecil, LHP (14-7) 4.20 ERA
On Friday at home, Cecil took over the staff lead with his 14th win of the season in a victory over Baltimore. The lefty allowed three runs (two earned) on 11 hits, playing damage control in an outing he ended with four strikeouts and no walks.

  7. UnKnown September 27th, 2010 at 11:55 am

Hate that game on Tuesday. Drabek is a scary pitcher for this team to face. Those types have been all year.

  8. UnKnown September 27th, 2010 at 11:55 am

Im assuming of course CC really isn’t going to start.

  9. jpb173 September 27th, 2010 at 11:56 am

In June I began to notice that this Yankee team did not have the killer instinct to close out games or make strong comebacks. Last year’s team seemed to fight the opponent to the last out and when they had a lead they added to it. But this year’s team seems to play down to the opposition and plays like it feels that it can “turn it on” whenever it needs to. Last night’s game may have been an exhilarating win and probably ensured that the Yankees will make the playoffs. Nonetheless the signs are still there that this team just doesn’t have it.

I think the Yankees lost some strong-willed players in the offseason (Damon, Matsui and Molina) and replaced them with some guys who aren’t as strong-willed (Granderson, Winn, Vazquez and Park). As a result I don’t believe (and I’ve felt this for a couple of months now) that the Yankees will go very far in the playoffs. I’m hopeful, though, that the front office will realize the mistakes they made last offseason and get it right this offseason. Besides adding Cliff Lee and, maybe, Crawford/Worth the Yankees need to make sure that the players they bring in are as strong-willed and have the killer instinct that we had with last year’s team.

  10. bruceb September 27th, 2010 at 11:56 am

Bout time AJ started earning his money!

  11. Bad Scooter September 27th, 2010 at 11:59 am

I love the Mo is done posts. Been reading these every year for at least 6 years or so. Funny stuff. Sooner or later they might be right. It ain’t now though.

  12. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

ac1 – with all due respect my logic is not flawed, every knowledgeable baseball professional I have heard or read who commented on the matter acknowledges that the Yankees are an aging team. The 3rd oldest in baseball to be accurate.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/r.....order/true

Girardi and Cashman have said so when they are explaining their rationale for resting players. You think they are resting players because they are young?

I also said above that Granderson and Swisher are good players not great players. You got that wrong as you got Swishers age wrong.

You are wrong factually, but if you want to pretend otherwise feel free.

  13. pat September 27th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

“In June I began to notice that this Yankee team did not have the killer instinct to close out games or make strong comebacks.”

Someone last week said they have the most come from behind wins in MLB, I believe.

Could your perception be somewhat altered because many of the come from behind wins happened before the dessert course?

  14. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:02 pm

No one knows if Mo’s poor performance is an aberration or the start of a decline in skill. Anyone that claims to know should buy a lottery ticket.

  15. Bronx Jeers September 27th, 2010 at 12:03 pm

    No AJ on Tuesday?

    What a wimp.

  16. Jason Voorhees September 27th, 2010 at 12:04 pm

If “Mo is done” then Papelbon is straight up dead.

  17. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I think AJ will be closing on Tuesday.

  18. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

I think Paps is dead anyway. Talk about falling off a cliff – and here I was wondering what happened to Joba. I guess Paps caught Joba disease.

  19. JobaTipsHisCap September 27th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

On paper, 2 of Jays’ SP are mediocre

  20. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Aj’s pitching tonight? Is it raining in Toronto?

  21. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

yeah, but also on paper, this is a 100 win team.

  22. blake September 27th, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Here is a schedule the Yanks could consider the rest of the way.

    Monday: AJ
    Tuesday: Mosely.
Wednesday: Vasquez (with Nova available in the pen, he’d be on 3 days rest).
    Thursday: off
    Friday: Sabathia
    Saturday: Pettite
Sunday: Hughes/ Burnett. (Hughes the first 5 and let AJ finish it).

This allows extra rest between starts for all of the potential postseason starters but also allows them to be on a regular schedule when they make their first playoff start. It also will give them a chance in those final 3 games if the division is still within reach. Hughes would finish with around 180 innings.

I would go ahead and transition Nova to the bullpen and perhaps get him some innings there to see how he fairs.

  23. bruceb September 27th, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Let’s just end it tonight and then give the old age pensioners a well deserved rest before the playoffs. As West Coast Yankee Fan (by the way, your post about Cashman’s moves this year was both astute and interesting) points out, there’s a reason why they need rest…they’re tired. Doh!

  28. Wave Your Hat September 27th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

I’ve been away. Has the drop in Mo’s strikeout rate been beaten to death?

  29. Jason Voorhees September 27th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Regarding that ‘aging’ analysis from espn.

If you’ll notice, the ‘youngest’ teams are all pretty much in last place: Pirates, Kansas City, Cleveland, Arizona, etc. Also, that chart only mentions current players, not ones on the DL, as it shows the Phillies older player as being 38 when Jamie Moyer is on that team. He’s 47.

I don’t think age is anything solid to debate over. A mix is good. Everyone wants to get younger, but the oldest team (Phillies) is about to clinch the NL East and the third oldest team (Yankees) is about to secure a playoff spot.

  30. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Beating Papelbon feels like two wins.

  31. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Ah, but it doesn’t end tonight – there’s a division to win remember… AND the Yankees have to have a BETTER record than the Rays because the Rays win the head-to-head matchups – so a tie puts us as wildcards.

  33. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Jason that’s a very good point. Personally I think a team needs a good balance of youth and experience. But at some point the seesaw moves too far one way or the other. In the Yankees case age is a serious issue IMO in that when it catches up to them, if not careful, there can be a rebuilding period and I don’t think Yankee fans like that idea. Yes they are competing for a championship this year. It’s not reached a tipping point yet and I hope it won’t.

  34. Don September 27th, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I don’t know why people are still lamenting the departure of Damon and Matsui. It’s true that some of the replacements didn’t work out, but Thames has been fantastic, and Granderson is pouring it on now. If we get to the series I wouldn’t be surprised if Granderson plays the same role that Matsui did last year.

    What exactly do you suggest?

  36. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Erica – clearly, I don’t operate well before 1pm lol.

  37. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:27 pm

This from Ed Price at Fanhouse in August:

“According to Baseball-Reference.com, the Yankees went into their weekend series with the Mariners with the third-highest batting age in the American League (31.3) and by far the highest pitching age (30.9). By comparison, the teams that look like the rest of the AL playoff field — Texas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay — are among the five youngest offenses”.

  38. SAS September 27th, 2010 at 12:29 pm

My feeling is the Rays should rest all their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string players. The 1st string players should get rusty.

By the way, that might be a good formula for the Rangers and Twins too.

    —————————————————————————–
AJ is superman. I agree he should close on Tuesday also. Maybe he can be the long man on Fridday.

    *****************

    LOL.. its okay.

If it makes you feel any better, last night I was sitting on my couch and I heard the rain coming down while I watched my Sunday night TV shows. When my DVR allowed me to return to the Yankee game, I put it on and was surprised it was raining there. Then I realized I was an idiot for being surprised it was raining there… I live about 30 miles away. LOL

  40. ac1 September 27th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Texas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay — are among the five youngest offenses”.
    ___

And as always, the Yankees are right there with close to the best record as tampa and minny…

now minny is something to look at. they are good every year without many superstars.

tampa better win this year because they are shedding payroll. (of course being in last for 10 years gets you good draft picks).

    Texas….

Lets just say besides the twins, i will stick with how the yankees do things, since they are in it every year and the others arent.

  41. upstate kate September 27th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

    Don
totally agree…as some have pointed out, Damon and Sui were together for 4 years before they won a championship…
and they were 2 of my favorite players, but that is the nature of baseball

  42. ac1 September 27th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

But to be fair to WCYF, i do want to see some of the younger guys like Montero, Laird and some of the pitching we have in the minors. that will come in time.

I just dont think the youth idea means go get crawford…..

That money should go to Lee and maybe a true DH, like Adam Dunn? I know Dunn wants to play the field, but who knows..

  43. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Lol! It happens to the best of us.

My issue with watching the game last night was that for a few seconds in the 9th I was positive I had accidentally switched to watching the Bourne Identity or something. Why does ESPN think that the only way to create drama is by constantly cutting from one shot to the next as quickly as possible?

  44. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

ac1 – what I might suggest isn’t very relevant as I don’t know when certain players are going to call it quits nor do I know what Hal Steinbrenner’s budget is going to be in the future. I imagine being a good organization they have been/are talking about this and making plans. I hope so. I would hope they do a much better job scouting, drafting and developing position players that can hit for starters.

  45. jpb173 September 27th, 2010 at 12:35 pm

    ———————————————————————————

Don, you’ve got to admit that this Yankee team simply doesn’t have the heart that past Yankee teams have had. I don’t think its a talent gap as much as I think its an issue with their attitude/fortitude. The Yankees just don’t have the killer instinct. Its possible that they have relied on the “Core Four” for leadership too much, but next year they need to bring in some guys who have the heart to step up at big times.

I wish I were half as confident as you about the playoffs but I see Texas and Minnesota as better teams than the Yanks right now. It doesn’t matter if the Yankees win the AL East or the wildcard…they simply will not be able to get past the first round.

  46. RadioKev September 27th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Last year, overall, the Yankees were older. I’m not buying the aging argument.

  47. upstate kate September 27th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

stepping up at big times??? A-rod and Robbie say hello…Granderson has had some timely hits as of late and so has Thames

  48. Yogi Mantle September 27th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

The Twinkies are decent, but how good would they be if they played in a real division or with a balanced schedule? I would think that even the Orioles would be competitive in the Central Division.

With HFA going to the best record, the schedule should be balanced. Texas probably wouldn’t be going to the playoffs if it weren’t for the west stinking all across the board. The Central this year is slightly better than the West.

Think the Twinkies would win the division often if say the Yankees or RS or Rays were in their division? I doubt it.

  49. Wave Your Hat September 27th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Sure, it is possible for an older team to succeed. There are plenty of examples of that.

But what scares me about age is not so much age itself, but the fact that as players age, their chances of having a season significantly below expectations increase considerably. Much more than the chances of their having seasons significantly above expectations.

So, you can put together a team which projects to perform very well, but if the team has more older players than is typical, the chance of having multiple players having bad seasons is higher than you’d think, which leads to a bad season and worse, not having an orderly succession plan to fix the problem.

  50. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

They have the most comeback wins in the majors again this year.

    How is that “lacking heart”?

There hasn’t been any evidence this team lacks heart.

Don’t mistake poor performance for lacking heart.

The two don’t go hand in hand.

  51. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Matsui is playing at a .268/.358/.453 (20 HR and 80 RBI) level and most likely won’t be resigned by the Angels next year if they get Crawford. That’s below the .274/.367/.509 (28 HR and 90 RBI) clip he was playing at last year with the Yankees.

Granderson is playing at a .251/.326/.469 level in 2010. He has 23 HR and 63 RBI for the season (so far). Essentially, you have the same player.

Damon, who is listed as a DH on the Tigers’ page is playing at a .274/.360/.407 clip with 8 HR and 48 RBI in 138 games.

Thames has a .288/.354/.505 line with 12 HR and 33 RBI in 77 games. While Berkman has a .250/.367/.418 line with 14 HR and 57 RBI in 120 games. Just with the Yankees, Berkman has a .265/.353/.363 line with 1 HR and 8 RBI.

I think it’s a wash either way you draw the line.

  52. upstate kate September 27th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

a wash perhaps, but w/ the benefit of the Yankees having younger replacements…remember all the times Sui had to have his knees drained last year?

  53. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 12:47 pm

sunny – stats are a fickle friend. When Thames and Granderson deliver a game 4 and game 6 they will mean a lot more.

  54. RayVT September 27th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

    WCYF

I agree good balance of old & young is what it takes along with a plan for when things go wrong. LOL! The Yankees made changes to help this team. Wood, Golson, Nunez, Berkman etc.

The Yankee defense is very good. Catching is not a strength defensively but it isn’t a negative.

Infield defense is great! Outfield Defense is great.

Lastly, I’m sure teams aren’t looking forward to seeing CC/AJ/AP/PH with the loaded BP of the Yankees in any series. Add to that potential hitters like Jeter/Swish/Tex/ARod/Cano/(Berkman/Thames)/Posada/Granderson/Gardy and each of them really pose a real threat!

I really like the Yankees chances!

So I go to bed leaving behind the happiest, most up beat forum I remember. I peruse this morning’s posts and see this:

“Good win, tough win, but I’m still concerned nonetheless about our playoff chances”

    WHAT?????????

Hopefully that poster was an outlier. I decided to stop perusing after that.

Last night was AWESOME. There’s something about knocking off two games at once that makes you feel like you reached the summit almost effortlessly. One game. Yeah I’ll say it. Such a piece of cake there couldn’t be a bigger one.

Now we play for the division and the best record in baseball. I didn’t think we were facing Cecil this go round. Cecil is a very very good pitcher for the Jays.

Just thought I’d share with you the Vegas odds, updated this morning at 10:00.

    kate – couldn’t agree more.

True WCYF – but when people complain around here about the loss and impact of Damon and Matsui, they weren’t complaining about the WS, they were complaining during the regular season, and for the most part, they’ve been comparable and better if you consider Granderson is a better OF than Matsui or Damon have ever been.

when i said that I was concerned about the playoffs, given what has transpired in the month of September – how could you not? Especially, with the questionable and outright puzzling managerial moves Girardi has made in close games. Losing 14 of 19 games or whatever the real number is – certainly gives someone pause – not to mention Mo blowing 3 of 6 save chances in the past two weeks. I’m sure it’ll all work out fine or whatever, but I’m not as confident as last year. Lots of question marks.

RayVT – we sure do have a good shot, I think so too. As with any sport it comes down to performance and playing the games. One thing I do love about this team is that aging or not, we are so deep that one or two players can carry the team. There were times this year when individually, Cano, A-Rod, Teixeira and Swisher did so. Any of those guys could get hot in the post-season or better yet a combination of players.

  61. jpb173 September 27th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

stepping up at big times??? A-rod and Robbie say hello…Granderson has had some timely hits as of late and so has Thames

    ———————————————————————————

Who stepped up during the four game losing streak? Who stepped up when they lost four straight games at Texas/Tampa Bay? Thats the problem with this team…they win one or two games and think they are back on beam and then comes another patch of poor/mediocre baseball. Its not a talent issue…its an attitude issue. They need to get more guys who have the right attitude and fortitude and less guys whoare going along for the ride.

I’m not looking for them to go 162-0 in a season but I think its clear that this team has issues. For most of the season they have hidden behind the belief that they are the best because they had the best record in baseball. But the truth of the matter is that, by Sunday, not only will the Yankees not have the best record in baseball but an AL East team may not have the best record in baseball.

  62. upstate kate September 27th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

when it comes to the play offs, you never know who will step up…I was very happy last year for Johnny D and Sui, but there is no guarantee that would happen again. And lets not forget last year’s great starting pitching, A-rod’s timely hitting etc

I don’t know why people are still lamenting the departure of Damon and Matsui.”

    _____________________________________________________

Don – it’s because Matsui was replaced by Nick Johnson for the same money. So, they could have signed Matsui and still traded for Granderson and signed Thames as a bit player. You have to admit it would be nice to have Matsui in this lineup, and thinking Nick Johnson would stay healthy was just plain stupid.

Damon replaced by Granderson I’m fine with, although it wasn’t looking great for a while there.

I agree that age has its issues, but let’s list them more balanced.

With older players injuries often play a role and recovery takes longer. More rest is needed, but experience and preparation play a large role in their successes too. Older players often adapt quickly to how they are approached (pitched/hit).

With youth, mistakes often over take skills. Often a so called Soph slump comes into play after someone has had a good/great 1st season because the league adapts. Quite often the youthful players are not able to adapt or are not prepared to go a full season. Career threatening injuries quite often happen to the youthful players as they have trouble deciphering real injuries with pain.

Youthful players are not usually good leaders and are often put in a role they can’t handle at an early age on a youth oriented team. (See Hanley Ramirez!)

I truly like the balance the Yankees have this year as well as last year. I think the Yankees are perhaps deeper this year!

“I wish I were half as confident as you about the playoffs but I see Texas and Minnesota as better teams than the Yanks right now. It doesn’t matter if the Yankees win the AL East or the wildcard…they simply will not be able to get past the first round.”

    Vegas Odds Makers, meet jpb173

    ==============================================

Oddsmakers do not make a team the favorite because they think that team will win the WS. They make a team the favorite because they believe most of the bettors will be betting on a given team. In this case, the Yankees have the highest odds because the oddsmakers believe that more money will come in on the Yankees and they want to alter the revenue stream to get more money to bet on other teams. The gambing establishments don’t make money by winning or losing bets, they make money by getting as much money into their hands as they can. Ideally, they split the take between winners and losers and keep the “service fee” for themselves.

Every team is flawed this year.

    Every. Single. One.

What you do in September has no bearing in October. We see that time and time again in baseball.

The key is to first get on. Then, it’s about whoever is hotter and luckier over the next three weeks.

May be too random for some but, that’s playoff baseball.

Too many fans look for sure things. There are no sure things.

As good as last years team was, it needed some luck and good fortune to win.

Are the Yankees a flawed team? Yes but, no more flawed than the other teams in the post-season.

  74. bruceb September 27th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Those Vegas odds are a little misleading. If they were based purely on current form there’s no way the Yanks would be ahead of either Tampa or Philly. They’re also based on the fact that the Yankees have won the World Series 27 times and have more fans around the country than any other team, meaning more people want to bet on the Yankees than any other team. Having said that, it does demonstrate that whatever our current ailments, the Bronx Bombers are still the team to beat.

SJ44, there may be a lot of truth in what you say, but more times than not, the teams that are the hottest in September do well in October. It was that way with the Yankees last year and with the Phillies in 2008.

Right now, I’d say the Phillies, Twins and Rangers have an edge over the rest of the teams in the playoffs. It might be interesting to see if we’ll be watching World Series baseball from an outdoor stadium in Minnesota in late October/early November this year.

  76. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 1:08 pm

SJ44 I would agree with your post with one exception. I think we have a flawed manager, I really do. I didn’t start out as a Girardi basher, quite the contrary. But, there have just been too many huge errors in strategy, judgment (lineups, substitutions) and management style for me. I think Gardenhire, Maddon, Manuel and Washington are better managers. Just my opinion.

They were wrong on 2003 ALCS, and right on 2004 ALCS. no big deal.

  78. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:09 pm

The 2009 team lost games too. Lost some games in a row. Had some losing streaks. Who stepped up in their losses?

    Sheesh.

I don’t know what some people are looking for.

Watched the ESPN2 cut-up version of last night’s game this morning. LOVED the energy and positivity on the bench in the 9th and 10th innings. Looked like a relaxed, confident team, in spite of the fact that they had lost a 2-1 lead earlier.

I really don’t know what people are looking for when they say “heart.”

And I don’t know why 2 games in the 175 or so the Yankees played last year make people so wistfull for Matsui & Damon. I loved them both, wish they were both back, but when they’re gone they’re gone. Back to my point, Matsui was MIA a lot last season. And streaky. When he was hot he was hot, but when he was cold he was awful, and he could NOT play the outfield. His game 6 was legendary and I will always cherish the memory of it. But if it wasn’t Pedro on the mound? Who knows. That was a match made in Yankee heaven.

Damon also – an adventure in the outfield. Rather have Gardner out there defensively by far. And yes, he stole those two bases which lead to the win. Heads up. But hardly something no one else could or would do.

And you can’t – CAN NOT – tell me you know already how the playoffs are going to unfold and who is or isn’t going to step up. More often than not it’s the players you least expect, though that was not hte case for the Yankees last season. ARod stepped up big; Matsui made sure CC didn’t have to pitch that last game; Damon had the heads up play. But others also contributed. it was a true team effort. And I believe the Yankees can get another team effort this season.

  79. RayVT September 27th, 2010 at 1:10 pm

    Hello Trish!

I don’t quite agree that any of the teams other than the Yankees in AL are better than them. Each has their own issues.

Texas w/o wonder boy in CF is not a threat unless C Lee can pitch 3 or 4 games in one series (5 game series/7 game series respectively).

Twinkies are depending on a relatively weak staff & 2 injured stars in Morneau or Mauer. Plus their middle relief is suspct at best.

Ray’s have issues with Longoria and a realively weak hitting team. The Ray’s pitching has been suspect of late as well outside of Price & Soriano! (& Perhaps Wade)

  80. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

How did Manuel do last season?

    What makes Washington good?

    Gardenhire I will agree.

    Maddon? Ha.

Doreen. Your take on Masui and Damon in 2009 is really off base IMO. Derek Jeter said clearly that Matsui was his favorite Yankee. Think about what that means. And to say regarding Damon in game 4, “But hardly something no one else could or would do”. The point is he did it. No one else.

  82. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

The Rangers are going with a 3 man staff in the play offs so I hope they don’t damage him too much before he is fitted for pinstripes. It’s a stupid decision since if they get to the 2nd round or world series he will run out of gas eventually.

  83. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    WCYF -

I LOVE Matsui. LOVE HIM. Wanted him back in the worst way. He was MY favorite Yankee too. That has nothing to do with him having to have his knees drained what seemed like once a month. He was streaky – hot hot hot – or not not not. He had a GREAT game against Pedro. But that WAS a match made in Yankee Heaven. He could not play the field.

But he could carry a team for short periods of time.

But why pine for what you can’t have.

    I don’t think I’m off base.

And about Damon – he did it because he was there. That was him on base. You don’t know if someone else would have or wouldn’t have done it. I’m glad he did it.

But people are putting these two players on a freakin’ pedestal and as much as I loved them both and was sad to see them leave, they had their flaws. It just so happens their last games as Yankees were very, very memorable to say the least.

And they were together for 4 years. One WS. One. And one year no playoffs. And two years one and done. So tell me, where was their clutchness then? Where was that spark, that inspiration, that special something that only those two have that moves teams to win WS? Where was it for 3 years?????

I don’t mean to take away from what they did last year. It was thrilling. Can’t be put into words. But let’s not make their presence on the Yankees something it wasn’t.

Essentially, you have the same player
    ———————————————
Granderson and Matsui may have the same offensive stats, but look at the defense that Granderson provides. Matsui, even in his prime, could never match that.

Sure, Nick Johnson and Randy Winn were busts but no GM is perfect. There is plenty of talent on the Yankees and they are in contention year after year. Look at the Mets if you want to see bad management.

  86. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

“when i said that I was concerned about the playoffs, given what has transpired in the month of September – how could you not? Especially, with the questionable and outright puzzling managerial moves Girardi has made in close games. Losing 14 of 19 games or whatever the real number is – certainly gives someone pause – not to mention Mo blowing 3 of 6 save chances in the past two weeks. I’m sure it’ll all work out fine or whatever, but I’m not as confident as last year. Lots of question marks.””

Sunny, I think some of you need to understand that what you consider questionable and outright puzzling does have another side to it. And unless you consider the other side you have nowhere to go but to be stuck in a rut of worry. For every move that you question, Girardi had a reason for doing it. You might not like the reason or believe in it, but that doesn’t mean that you’ve gotten it right.

This is a statement of fact, and probably makes all the sense in the world in dealing with people and emotions. The posters on here who are the most flappable are the ones who typically would go ballistic when Girardi did something that didn’t work out. All season long. His ways are not necessarily your ways. The people on here who tried to understand the moves and actually could see a rationale in them – maybe not all, but certainly many of the moves – are typically the ones who don’t get very bent out of shape and deal pretty evenly with wins and losses.

It’s pretty easy to sit back and try to reason something out if you’re not prone to get too easily upset. (Think Doreen amongst others)

A lot of people on this forum were accusing Girardi of “inconsistent” managing when he decided to sit certain players and not others. I didn’t see anything inconsistent about what he was doing and couldn’t figure out why some seemingly intelligent baseball posters couldn’t understand what he was doing. Another poster (don’t remember who) laid it out very succinctly, and I had already thought out the same thing. Girardi was sitting players who had had some kind of injury. It just so happened that Robby had not been hurt. He didn’t do anything different from what he did last season. Damon and Matsui were his usual suspects. Both were hurt. Arod had started to complain about pain again this season. You know what happened with Swisher, Gardner, etc. Last night I caught the beginning of the Joe Girardi show since it was on right after the postgame ended. The first thing he talked about was the “inconsistency” complaint. What he said was carbon copy of what the poster had laid out. He rested people who were hurt. That was not rocket science, yet many posters couldn’t find their ways there.

    ***************

About their bad month (the 6-13 or whatever it was). Arod said it best. Teams hit walls ever season. The Yankees misfortune was to hit it when they did. But you’ve seen that they have gotten it back. Listen, nobody expected CC to lose against the Sux. But he did. I think a lot of Mo’s problem had to do with his lack of pitching opportunity this season in meaningful games. Girardi didn’t have the opportunity to get Mo innings because the Yankees didn’t have a season where they were winning game after game after game. Add to it the rotation conundrum he faced much of the season. Short innings from your starters cause you to overwork the bullpen. etc. etc. etc.

I think that to look at the different problems the team confronted this season, from rotation problems to players not having their usual seasons, to injuries, it’s a tribute to the team and Girardi that they occupied first place as long as they did.

In any event, I feel great confidence in this team. As a number of posters have pointed out, the record is 0-0 in the postseason. I remember 2000. I probably had more concerns about that team that I would this one.

I think last night was a tremendous boost. I think it is also the positive jolt the team needed. I think you will see the turnaround continue with tonight’s game and for the rest of the week. We’re playing for the division. Good that Girardi rested the guys when he did. Now it’s all hands on deck.

    :)

  87. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Dorren you have the right to your opinion. I think Girardi has been a very mediocre manager this year compared to those I mentioned. When we played Texas in Texas last, Washington outmanaged Girardi at every turn. But, it’s very subjective. I understand that.

  88. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

And by the way, Manuel did very well last season.

  89. tyanksfan36 September 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

    Doreen,

I agree with the “ha” for Maddon as a good manager. Most every Rays fan hates the way he is always changing around his lineup, they hate that the players never know what position they are going to play that day and even if they will get to play. I think Zobrist the other day played about 4 different positions before the game was even over. They do have some good bench players that almost always come up with the big hit. but that has little to do with his managing. He has a pet in Wheeler who he always puts out in big game situations and Wheeler almost always blows it. Nearly every fan who watches their games on a daily basis that ive talked to have said that if they were to win the world series it would be in spite of Maddon, not because of him.

  90. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    WCYF -

Everyone has good days and bad days. Washington had a good day or two that series.

I’m not saying Girardi is the best manager in the league. But I think people have lost a bit of perspective because of one bad road trip.

And giving the players themselves a huge pass.

I don’t care if Girardi didn’t manage his way out of a paper bag that trip; he’s got a veteran club with a lot of experience. If they can be thrown off that easily – it speaks more about them than their manager. Lots of missed opportunities if I recall. Last I heard, managers can’t actually play the games for their players.

  91. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    Actually, that’s not true.

ESPN actually did research on the “hot team” theory and found almost 90% of them did not win the WS since the Wild Card was added in 1995.

So, it’s urban legend there is any carryover effect into October.

As far as Girardi being “flawed”, have you ever watched Ron Washington manage? Or Gardy in the post-season?

The managers aren’t going to decide this.

They ALL have flaws and they ALL overmanage.

Ultimately though, players decide the games.

Girardi was fine until he took his foot off the gas too soon in September.

I doubt very seriously he’s going to do that in October.

  92. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

    WCYF -

For Manuel, I meant in the WS. His club has done well the last 3 seasons.

  93. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

If Maddon is not a good manager to what do you attribute their terrific year to? A very average hitting lineup? A young pitching staff that has struggled at times? Come on.

  94. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

You know what I saw yesterday in the 9th that I loved? All the guys on our bench were watching attentively but they were also joking around with each other. We’ve has a tough couple of weeks, but the guys seemed loose. They were smiling, goofing around, and still enjoying themselves. That tells me there is a good vibe in the clubhouse. The guys know October is looming.. they won’t let us down because they didnt ‘want’ it enough.

  95. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Washington also had a 40 man roster in that series.

Something he won’t have in the post-season.

Many of the pitchers he used in that series won’t even be on the post-season roster.

  96. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

    trisha -

That’s the thing. You may not agree with Girardi’s rationale – and that is fair, it’s what makes the world go ’round – but to say he doesn’t have one is not true.

  97. SAS September 27th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

It is incredible to me that we are counting the Yankees out without playing the games. When the Yankees clinch, they start all over again. Texas won’t have a 12 man bullpen or was it 14 men. That is true with any team they play.

The reason there are playoffs is to see who the best team is given a new set of circumstances: best of 5, best of 7. It is a whole new ball game.

I am not saying the Yankees will go all the way, but by the same token, they may. That’s why they play the games.

  98. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

    WCYF -

I thought managers couldn’t win games only lose them?

You can also look at it this way – his team got off to a huge start and couldn’t hold it.

  99. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

For those who are interested, here’s a good Maddon excerpt on his detractors from Gary Shelton at the Tampa Bay Times:

Allegation No. 1: The great pitch-count swindle

For some reason, this is the charge that seems to anger people the most. Yet, three of the Rays’ starters are in the top seven in the American League in innings pitched. And last year? The Rays’ starters pitched more innings than any team in the league. If the Rays are counting pitches, its seems they have lost the calculator.

“I’m not going to let them go out there and pitch like crazy,” Maddon said. “If you do, you’re looking for an arm problem. As a former catcher, I think I have a good feel for our pitchers. When you have guys as competitive as ours, you’re never going to make them happy. But I want them healthy enough so they can pitch in a World Series.”

Allegation No. 2: The batting-order hijack

In a recent game against Seattle, Gabe Kapler hit third. In games against Houston and Chicago, platoon catcher John Jaso hit third. Despite early struggles, Ben Zobrist has hit third. And if that isn’t enough, B.J. Upton hit leadoff far too often last year.

So what does Maddon look for in a lineup? Put simply, he wants guys with high on-base percentages hitting early, with Evan Longoria and Carlos Peña in the middle to drive them home. And so, depending on the opposing pitcher, he tinkers.

“We have some really good folks doing our advance scouting,” Maddon said. “We look into the opposing pitcher and our hitters and talk about what might work.”

Allegation No. 3: Redefinition of idle time

When is an off day an off day? Not when a game is on the line.

Lately, Maddon has taken to talking about “off” days and “off-off days.” By the second one, he says, he doesn’t want a player to even wear his spikes. But like most managers, he’ll use a player in the late innings to play defense or pinch-hit.

“If you can raise the level of defensive proficiency late in a game, you do it,” Maddon said. And let’s be honest. If Maddon kept Carl Crawford or Upton on the bench and lost a game because an opponent hit the ball over the head of the player in their place, he would be criticized. And he would deserve it.

Allegation No. 4: Failure to hit in a pinch

When a regular is struggling at the plate, why not pinch-hit for him? Especially when the game is on the line?

Maddon drew fire after a 2-0 loss to Boston last week. With a runner on first, he let Peña and Upton bat. On the bench, he had Hank Blalock, Jaso and Reid Brignac, all with good averages. So why not pinch-hit?

“No, you’re not going to do that,” Maddon said. “Peña has hit over 40 home runs for the last three seasons. I don’t know that he was going to hit one out there, but a lot of it has to do with confidence and how a player feels about himself. This guy was an All-Star last year. As far as B.J., you’re trying to build his confidence. Maybe you think about it if was the playoffs and things were going badly, but not in the middle of May.

“I honestly believe this. The average fan in the dugout wouldn’t have pinch-hit for them, either. It’s easy to say, but when you’re in the dugout, I’d bet dollars to doughnuts they would have made the same decision.”

Allegation No. 5: Breaking the mold

Let’s face it. Hollywood would never cast Maddon as a manager. He wears Buddy Holly glasses, and he talks about things like swing planes, and he came up with 9=8, and he has a car named Babaloo. As you might have heard, he enjoys a nice glass of wine.

Maybe that’s part of the reason for the criticism. He doesn’t demonstrate a lot of gruff.

“I think I’m very orthodox,” Maddon said. “I’m not old school or new school. I’m about what’s happening right now.”

Allegation No. 6: That whole thing with 2009 turning sour

This much is true. Last season wasn’t nearly as good as it should have been. If you are going to give Maddon credit for the way he turned around the clubhouse in 2008 — and you should — then it’s fair to say his fingerprints were on last year’s disappointment, too.

“I think we were all culpable,” Maddon said. “I don’t know what level. From my perspective, I think I needed to do a better job coaching the coaches. That was my evaluation.”

Allegation No. 7: Maddon doesn’t know baseball

This one is simply untrue. Agree with his style or not, Maddon is a bright guy who has spent his life in a dugout. He didn’t stumble into this job.

If you believe — as many do — that a manager’s job is to set a tone in the clubhouse, Maddon has certainly changed the atmosphere since his arrival.

“I think I’m pretty solid as a manager,” Maddon said. “I think my prep is good. I think in-game I’m good. Dealing with the players, interaction in the clubhouse with the coaches, my relationship with the front office. I feel very comfortable with the job I do. I feel like I’m a very competent fifth-year manager.”

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine is – that I still believe that Girardi can affect the outcome of games by pulling someone too soon or too late based solely on that stupid book of his (pull a good hitter for a pinch runner that doesn’t steal second, bring in pitchers based on microscopic sample sizes, etc). Yes every manager can overmanage (Gardy) or undermanage (Grady Little) or whatever and yes for the most part the teams have to perform, but IMO, Girardi has the potential to do some damage with his micromanagerial style and cost a game. I hope you’re right SJ and Girardi gets out of his own way and lets the team do what they do best – win games, but in close games – that’s where I have the most fear, and in the playoffs, there’s usually nothing but close games.

  101. PittsburghYankeeFan September 27th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

Minnesota’s record is great in the second half mainly due to the fact that their schedule was by far the easiest–their record against AL East teams is pathetic.

Two home runs by Dan Johnson and two by Carlos Pena are the difference right now between the Rays and the Yankees.

Cliff Lee can’t pitch every playoff game.

I understand the Yankees logic this September, and I understand Girardi’s desire not to tip his hand, but as fan, I wish they had been more upfront.

Mo’s ERA for the past six appearances has been over 6.5. Let’s hope this isn’t then end, but when in his career has he had a stretch like that? That, and the performance of the third starter, is what will determine whether the Yankees win it all this year.

  102. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

    Shame Spencer -

I saw that, too. Didn’t look like a tense team to me, though the situation at that point was pretty tense. They had the look of confidence. They knew they were going to win last night. Even after Thames made the first out after loading the bases.

  103. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

I felt an enormous sense of relief after that game last night and I think the Yankees did as well.

Phil came up HUGE – can’t overstate that enough. I always did think there was a good change up in him somewhere. The key is for him not to avoid it if he makes a mistake with one or two because that’s going to happen. Phil pitched well in Tampa (too bad about the HRs), pitched well against Tampa here and, in the biggest start of his career – he came up aces. The Yankees needed this win desperately (although technically it was not a must win) and their offense was stagnant against a terrific Dice-K. The pressure on him was enormous – especially since the Yankees had shown how important the game was by moving him back to Sunday again. If he’s not the #2 or #3, then something is wrong. He’s probably not even throwing at his best velocity because he’s tired……….I do think the Yankees need to be careful and not overdo it with Phil because young pitchers often struggle the year after their first real heavy workload.

  104. Joe from Long Island September 27th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

You want to complain about a manager? How about Joe Maddon – the sports TV reigning genius now that Mike Scioscia’s Angels are in the pits – forgetting who was warming up in the bullpen last week? He brought in a righty to face Granderson, and not the lefthanded Choate. Four pitches later, 3-run HR and the Yanks win.

  105. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

In my gut, I do not think Mo is done, but he’s gone through a bad streak at the worst time. I can’t figure out what happened last night. Does he need more work? Less work? He’s the player we most need to get righted………..

  106. Betsy September 27th, 2010 at 1:39 pm

One more thing – it’s funny how Phil holds himself to almost ridiculously high standards. Maybe he takes after Andy that way or maybe he just wants to be that dominant pitcher he was earlier in the season………..

  107. I Like Inge September 27th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

People worry about Mariano? He’s looks fine out there. Just missing spots. Not like he is throw flat 85 mph fastballs and can’t find the plate. Some times they hit em.

  108. Doreen September 27th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

    Betsy -

You know what – it was more the stolen bases than the couple of hits. Those guys don’t steal two bases a piece and he probably gets out of that inning – Hall’s hit to Alex is a DP ball maybe. Last night was weird. :)

  109. sunny615 September 27th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

I’m not counting the Yankees out. I did not say that. All I said is that I have concerns going into the post season based on their late August – all September swoon. As Sj44 pointed out, some of it was due to Girardi pulling the plug too soon, and some of it was just weird managerial calls (ie, the Baltimore game we lost in extra innings because Girardi coudln’t decide if he wanted to be in the game or not). His love of his stat book also makes me cringe. But for me, I think this team is in a slight more tedious spot than most people think. Sure everyone starts out 0-0. Sure anyone can win a game, but my gut tells me (and this is my opinion only), the Yanks will have a tougher time in 2010. I’m concerened.

  110. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Doreen – it was great wasn’t it?

I know a bunch of people are gonna argue that they weren’t taking the game seriously enough and thats why we won’t with the World Series, but for me, it was nice to see the guys just loose and free. I think a team like that has a better chance of winning than one that is too afraid to lose a game.

  111. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Good thing the rest of the Yankee offense was so good last year that they were able to overcome awful performances from Damon and Matsui in the ALDS and ALCS.

Without the rest of the Yankee lineup showing up in the ALDS and ALCS, Damon and Matsui would have never had the chance to define their greatness as players, clutch performers, integral pieces of Yankee chemistry forever.

This year I hope our Berkman/Thames and Granderson show up before the WS.

We may not be so fortunate to overcome our poor play from them this year like we were able to do last year with Damon and Matsui.

  113. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

“With the help of Eric Seidman, I pulled late-season records for every playoff team of the Wild Card era from 1995 through 2008, 112 teams in all. For each team, we recorded their record over the final seven, 14, and 21 games, as well for September and whatever fragment of October remained. The results of Game 163 play-ins initially weren’t included in either the “week” records (which didn’t always coincide to weeks, but which were somewhat easier to gather) or the “month” records; including them didn’t change the results substantially. Here are the correlations between the interval’s winning percentage and first-round success:

    Interval Corr162 Corr163
    Final 7 .019 .016
    Final 14 -.020 -.021
    Final 21 -.042 -.043
    Final Month -.028 -.028

That, folks, is a whole lot of nothing, an essentially random relationship between recent performance and first-round success. None of the correlations even reached .05 in either direction, and six of the eight were actually negative.”

Doreen, I taped the replay show and was PO’d when you said they skipped the whole game from the 3rd until the top of the 7th. Great, lol.

That’s why I suggested last night that Mo was mentally exhausted – because he didn’t pay attention to those guys. Every time Mo goes through a slump, it’s “is he done” time. Well, I’m not ready to say it, but then I can’t remember when he’s been in this bad a slide going into the playoffs.

  117. tyanksfan36 September 27th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Most Rays fans dislike Maddon about as much as Yankee fans dislike Girardi. I work at a preschool on friday mornings and I talk to my director every Friday. Since we both like baseball and she is a Rays fan and I am a Yankees fan, we often have a lot to say(we try to keep it objective but one of us always ends up bragging about who is in first place) She cannot stand that Maddon keeps Carlos Pena in there even though he hits about as well as Ramiro Pena. She hates that he leaves the starters in the games too long sometimes when they have somewhat reliable relievers towards the end of the game. Also that Benoit and Soriano hardly ever pitch multiple innings especially in tie games. She never really complains about the bench players because like i said earlier, they almost always come up with a big hit.
There is something to say about their winning and his coming to the team but i think that has more to do with player development than managerial decisions.

  120. zippy September 27th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

the lineup was better with damon and/or matsui in it, and they were better hitters in Yankee Stadium. cashman made a mistake getting rid of both of them. there have been too many anemic performances this season from the offense. if this offense sh*ts the bed like it did in the playoffs in 07, its on cashman, and cashman alone for deleting the demon and the WS hero.

  121. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

This has to be at least the 5th or 6th time some Yankee fans have said age is catching up with Mo or he is falling off the cliff.

It is amazing that decline has hit him and he still has a 1.85 ERA and 0.86 WHIP this season.

I can only imagine what numbers Mo could put up if he was still standing tall on the cliff he apparently has fallen off 5 times.

We’ve has a tough couple of weeks, but the guys seemed loose. They were smiling, goofing around, and still enjoying themselves. That tells me there is a good vibe in the clubhouse. The guys know October is looming.. they won’t let us down because they didnt ‘want’ it enough.”

I agree Shame. They know the ups and downs of a 162-game season. Why do you think so many of them talk about turning the page immediately when they’ve had a bad loss? Because their job is to get ready for the next day, not to ruminate for the next two weeks. They don’t have the “luxury” that forumites do. :)

Pittsburgh, excellent point about Texas and Minny and the divisions they play in. More than one baseball person has stated that Toronto AND Baltimore (yes the new improved version with Buck) could both contend were they in other divisions. For the NYY to have occupied first place as long as they did, with the problems they had, playing in the division they do? Well just hand me that world series trophy right now!

There is a possibility that he’s injured.

And then again he could be in a slump. Happens every season. Usually not this late and usually not this extended but who knows. Everyday is uncharted waters when your a pro athlete over 40.

Nothing wrong with Mariano that better use of him by Girardi can’t help. To stay sharp, he needs to make 3 – 4 one inning appearances each week and none back-to-back unless postseason urgency says different.
There’s been times this year when he wasn’t used for a week and his command was off, understandably. Being a good soldier, he doesn’t complain.

Seriously another point that really needs to be respected. In all of the moves that posters don’t think are the right ones, you need to acknowledge that only Girardi (meaning nobody here) is dealing with complete information at any given point in time – well as complete as the players will admit to! He doesn’t need to share that information with fans in order to explain what he is doing. I do respect that.

Should the Phillies win Game 6 there has been a debate raging who they would throw in Game 7. The Yankees would presumably use CC Sabathia on three days’ rest again, but fellow lefty Cole Hamels has struggled for Philadelphia. Lee said he’d be up to the task of getting some time on the mound for a possible Thursday game.

“I’ll pitch whenever they want me to pitch,” said Lee. “That’s about as clear as I can say it. I’m ready whenever. I don’t really get that sore, so I’ll be ready to pitch whenever they want me to. If it’s going to help the team win, I’m in.”

What Mo does over any two or three week period is not particularly meaningful.

However, his strikeout rate has fallen alarmingly in 2010. He is striking out 6.8 batters per 9 innings, as opposed to 9.3, 9.8 and 9.8 in the three previous years.

He has had some seasons where he has had a similarly low strikeout rate (2006 and, surprisingly, 1998-2000), but at age 40 you do have to be concerned with the decline in strikeouts.

I feel bad for the team, they’ll be dragging their okoles over the border. What a horrible schedule. Even the schedule makers hate the Yankees.

  163. tyanksfan36 September 27th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I am all Yankee-ed out today. A huge break in my school schedule means that I just spent an hour reading RAB. Ive gotten to the sept 14 game that I went to. Something that I noticed is that he mentions “must-win games” and the Yankees ability to win them. The biggest “must win” that the Yankees didnt win was the game in Texas against Cliff Lee, im pretty sure all those in Yankee universe knew that theyd have trouble with that one. But the Sept 14 game and last nights games were both Must wins and the Yanks came out on top. I am confident that the Yanks will win a game before they go to Fenway because theyve won the Must-win lately. It hasnt been pretty at all but theyve done it. Also AJ has looked better in every outing and since he is pitching both tonight and Wednesday ill expect that second game to be a no-hitter;)

  164. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I think G’s greatest strength is BP management as his BP has consistently posted 1-3 best results in all of the ML. He is able to find the appropriate roles and keeping them largely healthy is a tribute to that strength.

The team record is not always indicative of a manager’s success. I am pretty sure this team would be over 500 with CR9 at the helm.

  165. m September 27th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

It’s oversimplifying to say anyone could manage this team. Yes, technically they could. But very few will get the chance.

Anyway, whomever you replace Girardi with in your own mind will have his flaws, too!

  166. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

it’s not really a stretch to say this team with anyone could be over 500 m. I happen to think G has done a good job however we all have flaws. This team is extremely talent , that is, the no 1 reason why they are winning.

WCYF, 2 questions. You said last night you wanted to trade Gardner, correct? Were you in favor of the Austin Jackson for Granderson trade?

    ***************************

Regarding Gardner. Understanding that there are financial considerations having to do with budget and based on other signings, I believe I said the Yankees might put together a theoretical package of Gardner, Joba and Cervelli, or some variation of that theme, and see what return they could get out there.

I have mixed feelings on the Granderson trade. I think the jury is still out. I like Granderson’s defense, attitude, intelligence and power. I don’t care for his .250 BA and .326 OBP and his .238/.290 splits against left-handers.

I think Jackson is a great 23 year old talent with huge upside potential. To hit .300 in his rookie year with 180 hits, 101 runs scored and 26 SB while leading the Tigers in AB’s with 600 is pretty amazing. Strike outs yes, great defense yes.

Sorry, I know it looks like it was directed @ you. But it’s a sad tune that’s been played for a while here. Just wanted to smash the tiny violin.

Coaches don’t matter? The guys love, love, love Kevin Long. Eiland has the respect of the vets and is responsible for the stewardship of the young guys. Yes, Girardi has his funny moves, but all-in-all I think he’s a good, earnest person who’s on solid ground in the clubhouse. And yes, bullpen management goes in the plus column.

No, I don’t think he’s perfect, but I don’t think he’s done anything to deserve the vitriol that’s spewed at him.

People expect to win every game, and when they don’t, they look at everyone but the players

  176. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

WYCF, I think within the winning now team contextual in mind , I think Granderson is the better fit. A lefty CF with plus power and above average D is a valuable commodity. Personally, Granderson’s game breaker tool of raw power is a deciding factor for me. He is lefty split has been terrible in the past , but with Long’s tweak and more time , I think we are starting to see better results. We gave up quite a bit in value in exchange for me, But I think Granderson can helps this team now and the immediate years that follows more than Austin.

I never thought there would come a time that I was actually hoping that Joba would be warming up in the bullpen to come into a game. That is possibly because outside of Wood and Roberston and Logan of course, theres not much better. He has turned around considerably since July. I hope they keep him.

  182. LGY September 27th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

    WCYF,

You have complained for 3 days about Cashman not developing position players and in particular OF, so I wanted to know if you were in favor of trading Austin Jackson, a very good OF prospect.

Now after complaining for all that time you want to trade Gardner, who is one of the better OF in baseball this season and the Yankees developed.

You complained about the age of our catchers and now you want to trade Cervelli. Finally you complained about the age of the bullpen and you want to package Joba.

    Can’t have it both ways.

You want to trade all these players + prospects and then after the fact complain about why Cashman is not developing them.

  183. West Coast Yankee Fan September 27th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Cashmoney, that’s a very reasonable take in my opinion. If you are right and he gets his splits up to .275/.350 with his power, defense and speed and even .245/.320 against left-handers; that would be great.

  184. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I am not saying that the Yankees have not developed some very good players in the past, but a good farm system has to be continuous. Look at the players the other contenders had to bring up. As to age, it’s about the quality of our younger players. Not just that they are young.

I don’t think we can overlook the impact Kevin Long has made on this team since he’s been here.

I know Alex could hit blindfolded, but him buying into Long and giving him his hear and taking his advice on adjustments at different points in Long’s tenure really cements my opinion on Long.

And then Robi! Wow, what a turn around from that impatient, free-swinging guy he used to be.

And the clinic with Granderson? I know that’s a testament to Granderson ability to work on the fly, but he didn’t do it alone.

The biggest LoHud compliment? The name Jaramillo hasn’t been typed here in at least two years. ;)

    ————————————————

This year they could have brought up Jackson, but instead they traded him for their starting CF. Basically every other team in baseball would have called up Montero as well this year, but the Yankees have the luxury to be patient with him. You can’t judge the Yankees in the same context as other teams. Montero’s bat was major league ready this season.

What players did contenders bring up this year?

  191. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I think the team needs to a do a better job with runner 3/ w 1 out situations. I looked up B-Ref a few days ago. The league average is 50 percent in driving the runners in while the Yankees is at the bottom with 48 percent with total PA accrued. Since they are so many contextual variables involved in those situations , I can’t pinpoint what it is precisely for such subpar performances. All I can see , by eyeballing it on a daily basis, We need to learn to make better contact , somehow lifting a fly ball or rolling the ball the right side of infield in those situations.
I think that is definitely something K long could work with with his hitters. Have they done so, prolly.

Last night , for example, Posada’s approach was not ideal with bases loaded, he basically got himself out in that situation.

  192. SJ44 September 27th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

One of the reasons Mariano is striking out less is that he is pitching a bit different.

He’s using both sides of the plate more and is also throwing more two seamers and that is allowing him to pitch to contact more.

When he was cutter, cutter, cutter, he was striking more guys out.

    That’s one concession to age.

Still has been very effective though, despite his blip after his two inning stint in the heat in Texas.

If anything, it means they probably have to think about backing off the 4-6 inning save opportunities in the post-season.

  196. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

    m. I think Long has done a great job . Swisher is clearly a better contact hitter this year, we will see about Granderson , but one can not deny his path to ball is short and compact and clearly will be to his benefit in the future. Robbie, is a immense talented hitter, you saw him at his best last night against Papelbon. Robbie’s biggest improvement at the plate came when he decide to exercise a little discipline and not chase pitches out of zone.

K long has my confidences as a hitting coach from a layman’s eye.

  197. m September 27th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

    Cashmoney,

Forgot about Swisher, and I pointed him out in a discussion about Long the other week!

Anyway, you’re right about Robi’s patience. When he struggled over our losing streaks he was not seeing the ball well or was just throwing his approach out the window because he was taking some bad swings at pitches he shouldn’t have been going for.

But, it was good that he smelled blood and waited last night. Different result, but same approach for miranda last night, too.

I was hoping he would take, because he had nothing to lose. Yes, he might get a hit while swinging 1-0, but he might make an out or strikeout. By, sitting 3-1, you might draw a walk that would win you the game. If it’s a strike, then rinse and repeat. If you still make an out at 3-2, then no harm, no foul. Game would still be tied.

I’m glad he was not trying to play hero.

  202. EA September 27th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

That’s going to be the big key for Girardi – keeping himself from going to MO in the 8th when Kerry Wood predictably puts a couple guys on base.

Wood has shown he can get in and out of trouble, but Girardi might not want to risk it in the playoffs.

If we get length from the starters, it will be much easier to manage the pen. Robertson 7th, Wood 8th, MO 9th. Mix in Logan against a lefty.

  203. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Mo should be the least of our concerns. SJ offered a good analysis from above. I think i wold avoid 4-6 outs situation at this point or possibly in the playoff as well. Mo was victim of not holding runners on and the ump last night.

As far as Era goes , small sample size with a reliever can be extremely deceiving and is not a good barometer. Mo stuff wise , cutter hasn’t as sharp but is still great , is the least of my concerns.

  204. Cashmoney September 27th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Last night , one can argue Joe should have brought in Logan to face Papi to save Mo from the 4 outs, more importantly, sitting btw innings. But when you are dealing with Mo, you can’t really question that call too much.

  205. Wave Your Hat September 27th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

“What players did contenders bring up this year?”

Interesting question. Here are the rookies (not necessarily first-time major league appearances) who have had some impact for their contending teams this year:

    New York: Francisco Cervelli

Tampa: John Jaso, Sean Rodriguez (I don’t know if he’s technically a rookie but I’m counting him), Reid Brignac

    Minnesota: Danny Valencia

    Texas: Mitch Moreland

Boston: Darnell McDonald (not technically a rookie, I think), Ryan Kalish

    Atlanta: Jason Heyward

    San Francisco: Buster Posey

  206. Wave Your Hat September 27th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

How many pitchers are we taking?

    CC
    AJ
    Andy
    Hughes
    Rivera
    Wood
    Robertson

Hiding an injury would make sense with Rivera. Dude pitched with a strained lat last season and a chewed up shoulder the year before that. With little to no dropoff in performance.

Anyway, I’m with Jerkface, 10+ runs eliminates the need for Rivera.

  215. G. Love September 27th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

With Wood, Robertsen and Joba, they shouldn’t need to push Mo into 2 inning stints.

It all hinges on the starters giving this team 6 innings at least.

If they can do that, then Girardi can get through 7-8 with the above mentioned plus Logan.

If the starters are getting pulled in the 5th then Girardi is going to have to learn to stop playing matchups with the pen and let the middle relievers pitch longer since he has more outs to make up for.

Mitre has looked the best of the long men

The problem with him is that he is a sinkerballer and needs consistent work or his stuff flattens out (see Tampa in extra innings) and he is not going to get that in the postseason.

Vazquez… eh, don’t think anyone trusts him though he is better than Gaudin. A

Mosely has looked fine as a starter, but not that good in relief.

Nova might have to make it by default, just because his stuff is so much better than the other guys and he does seem to do OK for 3-4 innings.

  219. Wave Your Hat September 27th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

  223. D-Man September 27th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Lefties historically kill Gaudin, this year is no exception though he sucks against everyone.

Ditto Mitre, though he has been OK against them this year. Nova has some L/R splits too, but obviously a SSS.

Lefties are killing Vazquez this year… 1.71 WHIP against with 18 HRs in 70 innings.

So against the Twins (a predominantly LH power team), none of them are good options. Vazquez and Gaudin would appear to be the worst.

  224. upstate kate September 27th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Nova does well as a starter, w/ no men on base. He gets rattled when there are men on. So I wouldn’t think you could bring him in the middle of an inning, which limits his use as a reliever.
OTOH, Javy doesn’t inspire much confidence lately, and Gaudin is hit or miss

  225. m September 27th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

my only hope is that Showalter and whoever is managing the Royals are trying to impress the Yankees for future managerial consideration.

  226. RSM September 27th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Joe should really resist the urge to use Mo more than one inning per game. I would trust the 8th to Wood.
Mo hasn’t looked good when he goes more than an inning.
I agree that if the starters can last 6 innings, D-Rob, Wood and Mo make a pretty good 7,8,9. That leaves Joba if there’s a need in the 6th, and Logan for situational lefties.
Bring a long man for the “just in case, break glass”.

But, last year, going with 3 starters and the extended series, they carried 11. This year, with 4 starters and a normal series, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Yanks carried 12 pitchers.

With the unpredictable starting pitching, I can easily see Joe talking himself into the extra reliever.

Too bad he doesn’t get a vote.

  233. blake September 27th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

If the Yanks open the ALDS on the road against the Twins then I’d throw Hughes in game 2 just as that RAB article suggests….lining things up to lead to that though may be tricky….if they opted to do that then Hughes would need to throw on Saturday to be on 4 days rest unless they decide to just shut him down until the playoffs (which I think would be a mistake)….

  234. REZ12 September 27th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    I would too.

Keeps him on the road, in a big ballpark.

Andy is a better matchup against MIN at the stadium, being a lefty.

Hughes is better in Target Field being a fly-ball righty

So a few things I was thinking of in class, don’t know if they make sense but yeah,
The stolen bases were not just on Posada. Rivera should have paid better attention to them. What I think got overlooked because of those stolen bases is the DP that Posada was involved in. Last time he was involved in a rundown, it didn’t go well but for him to be at 1st and get the ball to apply the tag was awesome(though I thought he was safe 1st)

Also, I hope that it doesn’t take alex as long to get to HR number 30 as it took to get to 600

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  373. funny article September 6th, 2014 at 2:48 am

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  374. water filters September 6th, 2014 at 3:24 am

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
