Pregame notes: Looking for something different
The television in the Yankees clubhouse was tuned to ESPN pregame. The group of players sitting around the television in charge of the remote were all rookies, young guys recently called up. They kept watching as one of the talking heads began ripping the Yankees rotation beyond CC Sabathia.
That’s when Alex Rodriguez walked over, called for the remote and changed the channel.
The Yankees could go a long way toward easing their rotation concerns tonight when Andy Pettitte makes his final regular-season start. Pettitte is coming off a bad start in New York, and he’s coming back from a little bit of back stiffness.
“He was able to do his bullpen a couple of days later,” Joe Girardi said. “It stiffened up the day he pitched, but he was able to do his bullpen and he’s had no issues. I don’t really have a lot of concern about it, but a little bit.”
The Yankees have not committed to a full playoff rotation, but it’s safe to say that winning the World Series is going to require a fourth starter, and so tomorrow’s A.J. Burnett start might be just as important in terms of easing rotation concerns.
“I don’t want to look at it as a bigger start,” Burnett said. “But it is a very important start obviously for myself and for these guys to know that A.J. can take the mound in the postseason and we’ve got confidence that we’ve got a chance to win a ball game, as opposed to what have we got today? … Confidence is not lost, but I know there are questions. I’m not oblivious to that.”
• As of right now, the tarp is on the field and dark clouds are overhead. It’s raining, but not heavily. “I think we’ll play,” Girardi said. “I wouldn’t bet it would be at 7:05, but I think we’ll play today. I haven’t heard any (contingency plans) which makes me think we’ll play.”
• Girardi said he believes once the rain passes, it will not come back so he has no plans of sitting Pettitte. Whenever this game starts, Pettitte will be the scheduled Yankees starter.
• Get used to this lineup. Girardi said there’s a good chance they’ll stick with it in the postseason. “This gives us a chance to split up the left-handers at the bottom,” Girardi said. “Grandy the last two months has been outstanding. It gives us another switch-hitter behind Robbie Cano. We think that it makes our lineup harder to navigate through. And the way Grandy has swung the bat the past two months, we felt he was ready to go up there.”
• Whether Jorge Posada catches Burnett tomorrow depends on how late the Yankees play tonight. Like with Pettitte, though, Girardi said he has no plans of changing his lineup because of the weather. He’s not going to sit Posada tonight to make sure he can use Posada tomorrow.
• Sunday’s starter is still up in the air, but it sounds like either Ivan Nova or Phil Hughes. Girardi said it absolutely won’t be Sabathia. “Could be that we use a lot of guys,” Girardi said. “A guy starts for a couple of innings and then we go to the bullpen right away. There are a lot of things we could do.”
• The Yankees want to use Hughes in some capacity this weekend, but Girardi still won’t give his innings limit. “We just wouldn’t use him a ton,” Girardi said.
• Girardi specifically named Nova as a potential Sunday starter. As for the chances of carrying Nova in the bullpen in the postseason: “That’s something we’d have to talk about as an organization, people that have seen him a lot more than we have,” Girardi said. Nova is not listed as an available reliever tonight.
• Does carrying a second lefty in the bullpen depend on which team the Yankees face? “I guess you could say that, yes,” Girardi said.
• Girardi said the Yankees have not settled on a number of pitchers to carry in the postseason.
• The Yankees have not mapped out a weekend plan for Mariano Rivera leading into the postseason. They’ll use him as necessary. “It is not mapped out, we’re trying to win our division,” Girardi said.
• The Red Sox are out of contention, but Girardi said it’s expected that non-contending teams still go all-out against contending teams. The Red Sox basically owe that to the Rays and Twins. “I think Boston will be ready to play and I think they’ll give everything they’ve got,” Girardi said. “That’s the kind of organization that they have. That’s the kind of players that they have. I think in the game of baseball, when you’re playing playoff contention teams, that’s what you’re supposed to do. I think you have to. It’s just the right thing to do. If you’re playing teams that aren’t in contention and you want to see young players, that’s a different story.”
UPDATE, 7:17 p.m.: Still no update on when the Yankees and Red Sox might start playing. There is only a message on the big screen in center field saying they hope to play after the system passes through.
The Red Sox also just announced that Clay Buchholz will not pitch tomorrow because of a stiff lower back. Tim Wakefield will start instead.
Here’s tonight’s Red Sox lineup.
Darnell McDonald CF
J.D. Drew RF

If they play the Twins- Royce Ring might get picked, unless Marte makes a miraculous recovery. I don’t ever want to see Gaudin again, unless he’s pitching batting practice before a game. Leads in homers per innings pitched.
Who is Darvish?
Sassy, Yu Darvish is a Japanese-Iranian kid currently pitching in Japan; has a live arm and is widely heralded as “The Next Big Thing”….
LOL ESPN – thank you, Alex!
I would only pitch Phil a few innings – that’s a good move. I disagree with not pitching CC at all and I absolutely disagree with pitching Andy tonight on a bad field. That’s just stupid – why take chances ? He could pitch tomorrow and still go in game 2 if that’s how the Yankees want to do it.

Hey, AJ is self aware.
Darvish-projected $25 million posting fee and 5 year contract on top of that. Yankees aren’t going that route again. Could have had Chapman for 30M without the posting fee.
Ok, media blackout in the locker rooms from now on. No more sports new. Just Spongebob.
That’s when Alex Rodriguez walked over, called for the remote and changed the channel.
*************************************
That’s great. Alex to the rescue!!!
it’s amazing how a complete unknown like Darvish, who hasn’t pitched an inning of organized baseball in the US, is already annointed as the next great thing. That’s the same logic that paid $100M for Dice K, a very marginal #3 or #4 starter. I’d be willing to bet the Yankees have at least one pitcher in the system, under control, with equivalent stuff and just need to finish the development process.
Chuck-
A twirling Darvish might be an even bigger thing than a whirling Dervish.
At least in some types of circles.
Could have had Chapman for 30M without the posting fee.
————————-
I really want them to go after him hard in the off season. 30 spread out for 5 years is an acceptable risk for the Yankees with that kind of talent.
I have to ask this – does anyone take Fan Graphs seriously? Everytime I go there (and I just read something spectacularly stupid), I end up rolling my eyes
How 2 beat writers witness the same thing and report the story differently…..
wallacematthews: A-Rod just switched the clubhouse TV from Jim Rome to Judge Judy
MG, exactly………..why on earth would we want this guy? He’s a total unknown in the majors and – I thought we wanted to develop our own pitchers?
In regard to the lineup, I wonder If G would consider batting Thames in the second slot vs LH in PS and simply flip Granderson to 8th spot in that case.
Darvish is a superior pitcher to Matsuzaka with a better arsenal and better results in his league.
MTU – that is a good one, and certainly apropos
Yankee Trader, I agree wholeheartedly. Darvish to the NL, far from the Bronx…
Coulda had Aroldis Chapman, for much le$$.
Mebbe so, Jerk, but mark my words – Darvish won’t succeed in the AL.
Just my gut feeling, feel free to disagree….
I disagree, I think he has more potential to succeed. And Matsuzaka once won 18 games, according to MG that makes him pretty damn good right?
No, Betsy, I find some of their stuff informative. But which article made you say that ? I want to read it.
He still has no experience here………….I don’t think we’re going after him anyway, so I’m very happy with that.
And while an expenditure of 100 mil might be required for Darvish, half of it is in posting fee, which gives Darvish a very trade-able contract.
Sorry folks but we just don’t use tiny baseballs in the Majors, and our Pitchers have to throw more than once a week.
Let the Sox have him. Him and Dice-K can drink Saki together to drown their sorrows after losses.

That’s because Wallace Matthews is a *******.
Actually, I hope Darvish DOES do well [unless he lands in Boston
]
After Matsuzaka, once burned, twice shy….
we shall see.
Cash, it was just an article evaluating their rotation. When they talked about Phil, they made a comment like “while he hasn’t become the ace that people expected”. I thought that was ridiculous because I want to know who thought he was going to be an ace this year? I didn’t read the rest of their thoughts on CC, etc………….Overall, the point was that Phil may struggle because he’s an extreme FB pitcher.
Longoria remains out of Rays line-up tonight.
He still has no experience here

Neither did Nova or Hughes before 2007??? Or anyone we’d draft and bring up??
Considering 5% of minor league players ever become anything in the MLB, I’d rather pay for a guy who can step in and perform league average or better than waste it on guys who will take 4 years to develop and most likely flame out.
Matsuzaka has had to deal with conditioning issues and injury. His first two seasons in the league combine for a 3.72 ERA. Thats pretty good, lucky though I think he got.
Let the Sox have him. Him and Dice-K can drink Saki together to drown their sorrows after losses.

I guess we shouldn’t go after any dominican players who learned to play with rocks? Maybe they can go to the sox and eat tacos with david ortiz.

so you pay $50M just be able to trade the guy if he doesn’t work out? I don’t get that logic and doubt Cashman or the Steinbrenners would also.

and his ERA the past two years is around 5, that’s not exactly a $100M pitcher. If he was on the Yankees the blog would be calling for him to ship out on the next tanker bound for Yokohama.
jacksquat – ******** is too kind of language for Wally Matthews. He is simply not human.
CR9,
To expand on an earlier conversation… forget Burnett, even Brian Bruney has more rings than Teddy Ballgame
so does Phil Coke
Jerry Hairston Jr. has a higher WS average than Teddy
He has as many hits as Melky did
I remember being angry about this….
From Ken Davidoff
“I recall that in 2005, the Yankees were miffed on the season’s final day when they were battling against the Angels for playoff seeding, and Texas (the Angels’ opponent) lifted its regulars after one plate appearance each. The Angels indeed won homefield advantage and beat the Yankees in that American League Division Series.
Who was Texas’ offending manager? None other than Buck Showalter. It’s part of his genius that we suspected a conspiracy to hurt the Yankees. We probably weren’t being paranoid, either.”
Jerkface, I want an established pitcher – not some unknown. The Yankees have emphasized the farm system; when are we ever going to let that tree bear fruit? Granted, those kids are not ready yet………but they don’t have to me.

–
He has been injured, and had to deal with the oppressive red sox throwing program. I have no idea how Daisuke would have done had the Yankees won his posting fee.
And the point isn’t to get Darvish so they can trade him, its that there is some risk mitigation by being ABLE to trade him.
The Yankees have emphasized the farm system; when are we ever going to let that tree bear fruit? Granted, those kids are not ready yet
–
We’ll have to replace Andy pettitte, javy, and AJ burnett at some point.
We have two pitchers going into the future, CC and Hughes.
ESPeeN used to be the channel for watching about sports. Now, its become this forum for never-has-beens to pontificate about what they decide they want.
The never ending spewing every chance they get about replay in baseball. Never mind that it would require a huge re-write of all the rules. You can’t make a “simple change” like replay without having to lay out exactly how you make up for overturned calls. Its not like you get a do over. Nope. That aspect is never mentioned. Not once.
Pitching, they focus on what THEY deem is important, and talk down about anything that disagrees with them. They act very much like a number of people on this forum.
They seem to think they don’t have to act professionally any more. MLB Network has turned into almost the same thing, but at least many of the talking heads there actually played the game. They just aren’t professional about how they present it.
Alex was smart to change the channel. Regardless of validity or not of the pontifications, you don’t want to plant the seeds that there is a problem that “all can see”. Most of the larger sports figures don’t watch any of the shows. They know better.
Jerkface-

Why are they exclusive?
Red Lobster – LMAO!! And it’s Teddy Losegame, because that’s all that guy was, a LOSER!!!! You never answered my question the other day…..do you have a real handle on here; one that you are afraid of using to agree with me? You can email Chad and ask for my email address if youd like!

Good one, Erin!
*******************************
Chuck-I can’t take the credit; jacksquat was the mastermind.
Yu Darvish appears to be the real deal, and the marketing aspect is huge.
But I understand the doubts.
Jerkface, I’m just not willing to pay for this guy. In a year or two, we’ll see some of our potential studs making their way here. AJ is here (probably for 3 more years).
CC
Phil
AJ (for the next few years)
Andy -I’m assuming he’ll be back. When/If he retires 2012, hopefully Phil will have established himself and we can work a kid into the rotation
Lee – hopefully
I believe in drafting young pitchers or signing them using the international rules and developing them through your own farm system, I don’t believe in spending huge sums of money for foreign talent that is unproven. If you need major league ready pitching, sign a free agent like Lee but stay away from pitchers like Dice K, Darvish, Chapman, etc who are very, very expensive and have the same chance of being a top quality pitcher as a guy with plus stuff that you draft out of high school or college.
Jerkface-
Too much moolah IMO. We should have internal options if things go right.
Lee and CC stabilize the front end. Hughes anchors the middle.
The newbies break in at the tail.
STILL raining steadily, up here. Local TV showing the tarp, and commenting on the dash by Adrian Beltre to be by his wife’s side for the birth of their second child. Also, local stations showing clubhouse interviews with Mike Lowell about the last playing weekend of his career.
Darvish throws harder, has better offspeed pitches, and in the NPB walks .7 batters less than matsuzaka per 9. We all know Matsuzaka came over and is more of a nibbler (its a style of pitching in the NPB), but Darvish doesn’t pitch like that.
Jerkface-
If you do want him one thing is in your favor. The Yankees have scouted him heavily. They don’t do that just for S and G’s.
Didn’t Judge Judy come to Yankee Stadium last year and give Mariano a hammer?
CR9 -
I actually made this name to balance out the Bostonian, Ruby Tuesday lol
If you remember, I was one of those guys who used to make all those lists (got that idea from you) with the people from Boston. I used 2 or 3 names when there was no registration. This is my only name I use now though.
I try not to be too anti-Boston though, then people will accuse both of us of being the same person and stuff, so I pop in every now and then with some Anti-Boston remarks, usually provoked by you
but try to talk serious baseball
The Yanks will go for Lee over Darvish.
Darvish becomes interesting if Lee goes elsewhere.
For those who don’t like Yu, what should the Yanks do if they don’t get Lee?
Also, When I saw your Teddy Losegame comment, I had to chime in… that was awesome
Need a nickname for Yaz though
WYH-
I’m sure the Yankee’s have plan A, B, and C.
Darvish might be one of those.
Ok it was Marilyn Milian
My bad.
Well, if someone offers Lee 6 years or something, the Yanks do need a backup plan.
Darvish is far and away the next best plan, unless you want to go with the proven domestic mediocrities – Ted Lilly, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia, etc.
Losegame…..dirtpile Bostonians cant stand their “best hitter in history” being disrespected like that.
I got one for Yaz! The criminal Yaz belongs in Alcatraz! So…………wait for it….
Alcatraz Yaz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO BUCHOLZ TOMORROW NIGHT!!!
In case you didnt know. I’ve been out of the loop most of the day.
Wakefield instead.
Still no update here. The rain is still coming down pretty hard. We haven’t heard a word about when they might start playing.
Trisha-
Is the Mortician injured ?
Honestly, his team’s never won the World Series, but Williams was pretty amazing. I read a lot of biographies and the one on Williams painted the picture of a fiercely independent guy who didn’t tolerate BS. He seemed a lot like Hemingway (Ernest, not Margaux).
Marilyn Manson?
It’s not my money but I would not dole out that much cheddar for a guy like Darvish who has never thrown a pitch against big league hitters.
Let someone else overpay for him. It’s not even close to a sure thing that Darvish even gets posted.
I’m sure the Yanks will prefer the Lee and internal options route.
Man, why would the Yankees want Andy to pitch under such awful conditions – even if the rain stops?
YFCA-
I wouldn’t mind Margaux.
Yeah, but Margaux couldn’t hit lefties.
Didn’t only 10,000 fans show up to Teddy’s final game in Fenway?
YFCA-
Does it matter ?
You want to listen to some Yankee praising, you should have NESN on and listen to Gammons and Curran. Seriously. They think the Yankees will overcome whatever problems they have and they base a lot of it on experience – having been there so much. They give them that nod over all the other teams.
When he homered on his last AB in his final game, Williams is said to not even have tipped his cap. Guess he valued the Fenway Faithful’s opinion as much as we do.
Trisha-
I wonder who drugged Gammons ?
a rain delay before the game has even started
Yes Zman. ESPN had an article on it, and how Ted hit a homer in his final AB and then did not acknowledge the crowd as a slap in the face.
Rather than acknowledging the true fans that did show up. And ESPN painted that picture of him as a great guy.
In actuality, he was an arrogant sob, and I dont even give him credit for serving his country and “missing his prime years in the military” because he probably went to the military for his own selfish reasons.
Margaux couldn’t hit lefties and Ernest didn’t tolerate lefties. Perfect!
Clay Bucholtz’s numbers are very similar to those of Dic key’s , R. A should get a healthy raise this year.
Damn Lohud ! I can’t even spell D. I. C.K. E. Y?
CR9 — There’s something noble and immensely stubborn about single-mindedly following your own road to excellence. This is the same man who would refuse to hit the ball the other way just to show that he could beat the shift. A very complicated man, but he was true to himself.
Just think, we only have all weekend to read the stupid ass Boston crap from the usual suspects here.
Red Sox just announced Buchholz will not pitch tomorrow. Tim Wakefield is getting the start.
YFCA-
Actually, I think she might have been a switch hitter.
GF-
So if the Yanks don’t get Lee you’d be OK with CC, Andy, Phil, AJ and Nova?
Doesn’t thrill me.
Chad-
Did they give a reason ?
You may indeed be right, MTU! I think I may have read that.
YankfanCA – I see nothing noble about an arrogant tool who wouldnt even acknowledge the fans that showed up in his final game. A classless punk! Id rather have a Luis Sojo than Ted Williams. How many rings does Sojo have? More than Ted’s frozen head!
As long as Darvish leaves his “un-Yankee” ways in Japan… he is a great option.
“He stands 6-foot-5, is model skinny and resembles no one else in the stadium, the product of an Iranian father and Japanese mother. He’s undeniably good looking, and he knows it, having peeled off his clothes for a nude magazine spread last year.”
http://www.tremendousupsidepot.....tery_y.php
Wakefield vs. Burnett is a much fairer matchup than Clepto Clay
YFCA-
Lovely nevertheless.
So how many of our Yankee players will get hurt and miss the postseason because of tonight’s game ?
Chad – I got one of my posts deleted. Please tell me what was wrong with it so I know what not to do in any future posts.
MTU – they said he had a stiff back. Who knows. The point is that the Sux are out of it so maybe they don’t want to push their darlings but are willing to sacrifice Wakefield.
Why did they freeze Ted’s head anyway?
Are they trying to bring him back in the future like Walt Disney?
MLB network is saying 8:30 start for tonight’s game.
I’ve figured out CR9′s alter ego…
Trisha-
So they substituted a guy with a stiff back for a guy who’s just a stiff.
Interesting. Hope we get “bad” Wakey.

————
Darvish doesn’t thrill me. Too much of an unknown to gamble that much money.
There are no guarantees he’ll even be posted.
Besides, they have more than just Nova in the minor leagues. There are probably at least three or four other options who will very likely get a look next season at some point.
You have said many things, CR9, but most of the sane world would not use Sojo and Williams in a sentence together. I do think even Luis would agree. In fact, Luis would say that CR9 is his greatest fan and he would have tears in his eyes.
Meh , CR. I wish I had seen the Ted William play live. The Same goes with Mickey Mantle and Joe D. I remember watching ‘when it was a game ‘ and seeing Ted and others in color. One thing that stood out was Ted’s beautiful swing and it’s vicious arc in motion!
YankfanCA – Sojo is a man of class and integrity. Williams was not.
I don’t have much use for the fangraph articles, but their statistical features are excellent.
That’s where most people go to find out the average velocity of pitchers, velocity charts, and stuff.
Plus win probability, pitch values, pitch type, GB/FB/LD % etc. Some good stuff.
MLB network is saying 8:30 start for tonight’s game.

Hi Chuck,
I just hope that once they start there is no rain delay so Andy can get his work in.
m October 1st, 2010 at 7:23 pm
I’ve figured out CR9’s alter ego…
———————————————————————————————————————-
Albert Desalvo?
Ted Williams served as a Marine Corps instructor pilot in WWII, and flew ground-attack missions in Korea. Call him whatever you like, CR – that is the American Way. Ted’s a hero, though, regardless. Red Sox or otherwise. And, by the way, “Gods do not answer letters.”
(Opdyke).
Yes, Cashmoney, it was a beautiful swing. It was Ted’s son who greedily tried to make money off his dad after the old man passed away. There were huge feuds and lawsuits between son and daughter over the cryogenics and other unsavory issues.
GB7,
I don’t have a clue who that is!
Hi, Fran! I sure hope so (otherwise Andy will have to finish up with a bullpen session later on).
If the Yankees don’t get Lee, they will find someone else…………obviously that pitcher won’t be close to being Lee, but I sure as heck don’t want to spend that much $$ on a complete unknown
m-
The Boston strangler.
CR9 — Do you even know the faintest off-the-field thing about Sojo? (Why am I engaging in this?)
Ted’ son may be the best Red Sox fan to ever exist, for the shame he put on the Williams family!
I dont agree Chuck. Williams was an arrogant, selfish thing and doesnt deserve the praise he receives post-mortem from ESPN – the home of the Red Sox.
Bringing back Andy for another tour is becoming more of a priority.
I wish I couldve been so lucky, MTU
“Alcatraz Yaz”
Nice
And nice to see no Laptop tomorrow. Then again, if bad AJ shows up, it doesn’t matter.
Yankfan – I dont need to. Sojo wore the pinstripes, and that’s all I need to know.
Even with Lee I think it’s a priority, but Andy would be the #4 starter……….
Chuck is spot on; I think you’re treading on thin ice when you criticize someone who served his country so well and for so long.
Oh! Does he post here?
What’s the word? Decomposing? When a psychopath messes up because he secretly wants to get caught?
Then we agree to disagree, CR – Ted’s a hero who served his country, and I thank him [his memory] for that. Semper Fi, Mac.
Soho had his off-the-field problems, but he was never arrogant. Quite far from it actually
m-
No. That only applies to people like Mozart, or Beethoven.
Predictions – There has been some falloff in the Darvish adulation lately. I don’t think the Yankees will go more than $15 million if he gets posted. And no way are they going to go after Crawford or Werth either, Gardner had a good enough year as did Granderson to preclude that. I think you are going to see the same team out there next year with the addition of Lee and Montero and some other AAA guys. They will lose Wood, Berkman, Vazquez and Kerns and scrounge around again to fill out the pen and bench.
I dont think ya have figured it out, m! I havent posted in the last 4 hours using the handle!
Im not treading on any thin ice. I dont have to respect somebody because they were in the military. I am not required to do so. He was a Red Sox, first and foremost, and that’s all I need to know about him.
I didnt know about Sojo’s off the field problems. Oh well, they were probably caused by a Bostonian.
Even with Lee, you can say they have questions.
Can Andy stay healthy for a full-season and put together an above average season at age 40?
Will Hughes go backwards, forwards, or stay the same? All young pitchers don’t go forward in their 2nd full year.
Ditto Burnett?
Though CC and Lee at the top of the rotation lessens those concerns. But no team has a perfect rotation. Neyer said Boston will be co-favorites next year (lol) and they will have many more questions than we will. I’m not even sure if Buchholz is a sure thing considering all the metrics suggest he has been pitching 1-run better than his ERA indicates.
I wouldn’t count out Darvish either. Not all Japanese pitchers are created equal.
i think im going to drop this conversation about frozen head ted before it gets out of hand.
GB-
Good thing CR isn’t from Chicago.
The baseball in Japan is smaller, they go every 4-days, the strike zones are bigger, and the competition is vastly inferior.
Pass.
I’ll go searching in Taiwan (Wang, Kuo) before I do Japan for pitching.
is there an ETA on the start time tonight??
You can throw out all the red herrings you want.
I dont need to throw out red herrings. Why? Because you’re not smart enough, m, to figure anything out!
CR9,
Teddy is a controversial subject, obviously a slippery-slope. He was arrogant, but did serve our country honorably…
However, what can’t be debated is that Jerry Hairston has a higher WS average than him

“it’s amazing how a complete unknown like Darvish, who hasn’t pitched an inning of organized baseball in the US, is already annointed as the next great thing.”
From the admittedly small samples I’ve seen of Darvish, I’ve been underwhelmed. His stuff hasn’t impressed me that much – not nearly in line with the descriptions of him as a pitcher coming over from Japan.
Both in the last Olympics and the 2009 World Baseball Classic his stuff just wasn’t that great. I would not spend big money on him.
I would have broke the bank on Chapman. Darvish isn’t close to Chapman. Again, it’s small samples, but Darvish’s stuff isn’t that great from what I’ve seen.
wakefield v burnett? how many runs will that game produce?
Here is the latest update for our 2010 Season Chart. Who woulda thunked it!

Comet-
I live in southern Utah. Climate similar to Vegas. A little cooler in Summer, and a little colder in Winter.
Most people would consider it a mild Winter.
A few “cold snaps”, and an ocassional short-lived snowstorm.
It is not at all uncommon to see 60 in the middle of Winter.
Summer is Hot and Dry for 2-3 Months. It’s easy to escape though.
Falls are my favorite.
Oops. Try this.

MTU, even Jerry Remy is gushing about the Yanks, especially Pettitte.
Trisha-
What the hell is that some kind of reverse Jinx ?
Didn’t Wake start out on the Pirates? What a career he’s had……………
Which thing, the Bride of Chucky or Remy talking about Pettitte????
If Pettitte retires I am happy with Sabathia, Lee, Hughes, Burnett and Nova.
“He’s a bag of wind. About as gutless as a dead fish in a skillet”
I aint gonna throw away my life for a bunch of dirtpiles. I’ll just hope that somebody else does my dirty work for me! I dont think that makes me gutless. Smart would be a better word!
Peter Gammons just said he’s never met anyone that’s dislike Mike Lowell. Well, Peter, you’ve never met me!
Trisha-
Both.
Thanks MTU. I’ve been through Southern Utah in the summer. Wonderful, beautiful country. Lots of room for hiking. I’ll get back someday. Sooner rather than later I hope! I’ve told my wife about the breathtaking sights. We’re looking for warmer weather like that of Phoenix or Southern California.
Hope you are well.
C
Anybody have any idea when the game is supposed to start. I am on my way out for an early supper?
and we want Comet here
GB things are great up here. Fall is here and it is getting cooler! Winter is on its way.
Thanks for asking!
C
Comet-
I am Thanks. Too many humanoids down there for my liking.
Good luck.
This looks better:
CC
Lee
Hughes
Pettitte
Nova or another AAA guy.
WC, you’d have to really be absolutely certain that Phil won’t regress (as happens to youngsters with big workloads the previous year) and that he’ll improve. You’d have to be sure that AJ will at least be solid, if not particuarly good…….You’d need these things to happen because if one or both don’t, then Nova or some other kid as the #5 starter really has no room for growing pains.
Thanks SAS!
Vineyard, much better.
“Trisha-
Both. ”
Remy I do trust to be honorable. As long as we can be sure that BOC is nowhere near the field with a knife, I think the Yanks will be fine!!!
benshpigel Still raining.
Trisha – Jerry Remy is anything but honorable! The guy is a weasel, a pig. He’s the biggest whiner; all he does is whine about umpires and now that they’ve been eliminated, he whines about injuries. Im pretty sure, though, that the biggest weasel award belongs to Tom Caron.
Instead of waiting to play baseball it sounds like the Yankees should be building an Arc.
MTU,
I find the humanoids particularly nice in this area. One of my friends, who is lovely herself, said everyone is too nice.
Oops ! that’s Ark.
MTU,
Is that an arc or an ark?
Well there are no guarantees when it comes to any pitcher and their health.
But, if Pettitte comes back you will have Sabathia, Lee, Pettitte, Hughes and Burnett.
If Pettitte doesn’t come back, you would have Sabathia, Lee, Hughes, Burnett and Nova.
I’m 90% sure we will sign Lee, no one will outbid us, we have A-Rod’s decrease and Igawa and Posada’s salaries coming off the books.
SAS-
It’s not that they may not be nice it’s just that there’s too many of them to suit me. You’ve seen my photos.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
MTU,
You live in God’s country
Awww……………………………………..the yanks aren’t going to resign Igawa ? ? Time for some Potato Vodka !
SAS-
I still can’t figure how he let ME in.
No Clay B certainly improves the Yanks chances, and with Longoria out they have a reasonable shot here at the division. It’ll take a sweep of Boston since I don’t see the Rays losing two to KC. But I have to say, playing the Twins without Morneau is a better prospect that playing Texas with Hamilton.
no start time yet?
Yay, Wakie tomorrow
maybe Aj will have a chance
Wow, really, is Igawa done – woohoo. Bet he signs a deal with an NL team and wins a dozen games to an ERA ca. 4.
Posada is signed through 2011 and I’m not sure the Yankees won’t be outbid. I expect the Rangers to do whatever it takes to sign him whereas I do not think the Yankees will go to a 6th year
I have to be honest. After having been forced to listen to NESN for all of the Yankee games over the years, I have come to have great respect for Remy. He is as objective a broadcaster as I have heard. If the ump screws a Yank, he is the first to say the Yanks have a legitimate beef. If a Sux player gets a gift, he’ll also announce that. And he is always complimentary to the Yankees. I think he’s a good guy.
Texas’s new TV contract definitely spells trouble for Lee. He may not like it there, but he seems like the type of guy that will simply take the highest offer rather than look to come to a winner like the NYY and his former teammate CC.
I know Posada is signed through 2011, but that is a big chunk of change coming off the books, except for Lee’s first contract year. No one is giving Lee six years.
IMO, Morneau will be a non factor if he plays at all since he has been out over three months. Even if the Yankees sweep the Rays have the tie breaker so we need to win it outright not tie.
Texas SP after Lee in inconsistent and easier than what the Twins can trot out there.
trisha – well, i respect your opinion.
Orsillo on the other hand is about as hideous as you will find.
Vineyard Morneau is out for the ALDS.
WC, I wouldn’t think so, but I’m prepared for the worst case scenario……..
trisha – the main thing about Remy is that his red chubby cheeks and his fat face make him look like a rat searching for cheese
Betsy:
Lee has said he doesn’t want to return to Texas. Texas may bid but imo can outbid very few other teams.
Lee is also is buddies with CC from their Cleveland days together, the last time the Rangers were in town this year CC and Lee had dinner together. Our ‘Team’ ambassador hard at work ! YES !
KC ahead 1-0 bottom of the 1st on hustling play by Gregor Blanco scoring from 2nd on a DP.
“Orsillo on the other hand is about as hideous as you will find.”
Vineyard, did he really say that?
I think the Yankees have a great shot for different reasons, but it might require that Lee take less $$ and years
Great – close play at the plate gives the Royals a lead – looked like an out, but let’s go KC>
There you go KC. Score those runs!
Thanks WC, meant to say he will be a non factor even if he comes back for the ALCS and the WS. Just too much time off to be effective.
Lee has said he doesn’t want to return to Texas. Texas may bid but imo can outbid very few other teams.
—————————————————
I’m sorry but where was that quote from Lee coming from, that he doesn’t want to return to Texas?
Vineyard’s right he did say that. I have also read that Lee doesn’t care for the heat. That may have contributed to his iffy second half too. I lived there and it is beyond miserable.
weather.com says it stopped raining
Lee is really no different than any other ballplayer.
He’ll come to NY if the money is right.
Something really just struck me. Of all the teams that were in last year’s postseason, there are only 3 repeats!!!
LAST SEASON
Dodgers
Cards
Rocks
Phils
Yanks
Angels
Minny
Sux
I also think that is one thing Cashman has proven he is good at. He handled the Sabathia and Teixeira’s signings very adeptly.
Betsy:
I don’t think money will be the issue for the Yankees, more often than not when they want something they get it. After all they went after him pretty hard with Seattle only to get snubbed in the end. Too bad the Smoak acquisition blew up in Seattle’s face this year. Karma for the Seattle GM. Tough rocks.
Crank up those printing presses in the basement of Yankee Stadium and print out some nice new greenbacks for Cliff. He will look good in the pinstripes.
“trisha – the main thing about Remy is that his red chubby cheeks and his fat face make him look like a rat searching for cheese ”
MTU, what I’m saying is that the Yankees may not outbid the Rangers in $$ or years and that Lee would have to choose.
Cash is very well-respected around the game, by execs and players alike; he’s very good with the personal stuff. I still remember him specifically NOT pushing CC to rush into a career-altering decision and CC being appreciative of that fact.
Vineyard, not so much the $$, but the years……….
WCYF-
Just show him the green. The rest will take care of itself.
“Something really just struck me. Of all the teams that were in last year’s postseason, there are only 3 repeats!!!”
Giving players more years than is prudent or they deserve is a time tested Yankee tradition. They did it with A-Rod, they did it with Burnett, they did it with Posada. They will do it with Lee – if they have to.
I’m sure Lee doesn’t get scenic adventure tributes done in his honor after wins in Texas……how could he pass that up?
MTU –
I went back to this and LdMAO!!!!!
“Is the Mortician injured ?”
Betsy-
You may be right but if they want him that’s what they’re going to have to do- show him the money. At this stage of his career, and with the laws of the free market in operation that’s what it’s gonna take.
It all gets down to how badly the Yankees want him.
We’re gonna find out.
I hear what Betsy is saying though. You never know, no one knows. All you can do is make an educated assessment on the odds – based on available information. I think the overwhelming opinion of the media and fans is that the Yankees want him badly, the front office, and that they will probably get him.
WC, I hope they don’t do that…………….
$$$ is one thing – years is another. I can’t go for 6 years – even 5 years is pushing it.
They offered more money to Greg Maddux, but he chose to stay in the NL and sign with the Braves.
Since we know who everyone like in the AL; who is everyone rooting for in in the NL?
I want to make it clear that I think the Yankees LOVE Lee and want him very much. My point is that there is a limit to how much love you can show a player. I guess we’ll see soon enough.
Cashman will do whatever it takes. Sabathia wanted a suite on the road, he got a suite on the road. He wanted the three year opt-out clause, he got the three year opt-out clause.
Trisha-
He looks like one doesn’t he ? The way he’s pitched this year maybe they should call him the “Undertaker”.
Blake-
That is absolutely true. No tributes unless he dons the Stripes.
Having so much fun I almost forget to mention this.
KC 1-0, bottom of the 2nd.
Girardi and Maddon: TEXT – We’re definitely playing to win the division.
SUBTEXT – You know there’s nothing wrong with wresting guys a little and hope for the division.
TRANSLATION – men, do you REALLY want to face the Rangers in the opening series?????
Is there any estimate for a start time? Last I heard was 8:30…
That was a long time ago, but yes – it’s been done. The Yankees were an awful team and NY didn’t have the greatest rep.
There is probably a limit to the “love” that Texas will show Lee as well. If the Yankees want Lee bad enough then they can afford to match or beat any money offer….if that is the case it will probably come down to Lee’s preference much more than a TV deal.
How about $ 120 for 5 years. Front load it so it escalates downward with each succeeding year ?
WCYF-
Actually I read where it was Cashman’s idea to offer the opt-out clause, to make CC’s decision easier to move his family to the East coast.
In the NL. I personally like the Giants. But I think the Phils are pretty much a lock for the series with Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels.
1-0 KC in the 3rd.
TB folding down the stretch…SWEET !
MTU we have lots of space up here free of humaniods.
Trader you are correct, thanks. Nice negotiating though by Cashman, to offer something that might be a negative to establish trust.
Blake-
The problem is the Rangers can throw in a week with the Dallas Cheerleaders. Doubt we can match that.
Unless we make it up in more money. That would solve the problem.
TRANSLATION – men, do you REALLY want to face the Rangers in the opening series?????
Trisha- That’s why the Yankees are pitching AJ tomorrow to help assure the WC and an opening series against the Twins.
The Yankees were a different organization when Maddux spurned them for the Braves. It was a good decision on his part. Heading into the 1993 season, the Yankees were not really attractive to anyone. They had no winning tradition in the recent past, were seen as a difficult place to play (the Bronx plus George were not a nice combination to most freeagents back then) and there was no real upside. Maddux is a bright guy that made a smart quality of life decision. If he were that same topflight freeagent heading into the 2011 season it might work out differently.

==============
If they show Lee the type of love they showed CC (Cashman following him around CA) then I would say we are the front runners. Maybe Lee should hire Jerry McGuire ?
Comet-
Yes of course, the humanoids are all frozen to death. I like warmth.
BryanHoch
It looks clear and ready for baseball at Fenway, but the tarp is still on. Might be another band of ugly weather on the way.
Thanks, Pat…………….If there is a band of ugly weather, just wait it out………
Maybe Lee should hire Jerry McGuire ?
“““““““““““““`
No, he needs to hire me -I can get him a lot of money and I will only take 1%. He’ll end up signing with the Yankees, but I promise they’ll pay him a decent wage…
MTU such unkind words!
Since I tend to like to render to the season that which is the season’s and render to the off season that which is the off seasons, I couldn’t care less about speculating about next season. It’s like what retail does to consumers. How about we rush you through life? Think it’s summer? Surprise, all those clothes were sold in the spring. We’re putting out fall and winter fashions now! Want to enjoy Thanksgiving? We’d suggest you stop in the store sometime in September because we really have to be putting out Chrismast stuff at the end of September. You understand!
No I DON’T understand and I don’t play the game. I give to the day that which is the day’s.
So I find any talk about next season premature. I am basking in the warmth of what is coming to your local theatre soon. THE DIVISION SERIES!!!
But then you have to be really comfortable in your own skin and your own life to live for the day. Or as my father would say, why borrow trouble? Or as Tevye would say, good news will stay. And bad news will refuse to leave.
Betsy-
Did you get the picture I e-mailed you earlier?

Rain is fun…if you live in the rainforest…and maybe even not then. C’mon, Mother Nature, throw us a frickin’ bone here!
woohoo – leadoff triple for KC – let’s go…
PacoDooley-
Good point about Maddux. I think he wanted to stay in the NL anyway, because he had a terrific memory for all the hitters weaknesses.
So I guess it’s ugly all around up there in Boston- The weather and the Sox.
That’s ugly to a higher power.
2nd triple in as many games for Dyson.
woohoo – 2-0 KC and a second man on 3rd with no outs!
back to back triples for the Royals
MTU –
The Jets’ “Flight Crew” might be able to give the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders a run for their money. But Mrs. Lee might not be too pleased.
KC 2-0 and counting bottom 3rd.
“Trisha- That’s why the Yankees are pitching AJ tomorrow to help assure the WC and an opening series against the Twins. ”
And I guarantee you that the Yankee fan ingrates will kick AJ rather than kiss him. No ability to think outside of the box!
Back to back triples don’t happen often.
Royals snuggie.
“And I guarantee you that the Yankee fan ingrates will kick AJ rather than kiss him. No ability to think outside of the box!”
2nd triple in as many batters for Shields. Maybe people will stop calling him by that nickname. He and AJ are in the same zip code actually.

Trader, funny line about AJ, nothing like a light hearted moment at his expense. LOL !

Just in time for the winter. I would use a Yankee Snuggie.
Wait, I thought the Rays had an easy schedule??
Shield’s if awful – where does he lineup in the Rays rotation? He looks like the same guy that the Yankees pounded.
Erica, I did – I just responded. That was some pic, lol. I was worried before the rain that our house was going to flood, but as bad as it was today, I don’t think it was as bad as they’d predicted.

Wait, I thought the Rays had an easy schedule??
================================
shocking how badly they have played. The Yankees have been an embarrassment this month, but the Rays have been worse.
AJ pitches crappy tomorrow your damn right he will get kicked. Hard to the curb, twice !
I posted that blog from Neyer today; he claimed that Sheilds has been very unlucky this year……
Excerpt from Cliff Lee when he was an Indian:
“If I was a Brewer everyone would immediately expect me to perform like CC did last year. I can’t do it. I can’t throw 7 complete games and 3 shutouts in only 17 starts. Are you nuts? That’s insane! Who could do that? Did you know that two seasons ago I got sent down to the minors? I was 28 years old! What kind of 28 year old gets sent down to the minors? A bad one, that’s who. Trust me, I’m damaged goods. I don’t even have a cool sounding name. Cliff Lee, that name sounds like an alcoholic furniture salesman. God, my name is so lame. You won’t even be able to come up with clever signs, “Cliff Lee ya later”? STUPID! I am so lame.
That’s my family right there. (Yes, that’s my wife. Yes, I know she looks 14. Yes, I named my son Jaxon. No, I don’t have a good excuse at to why.) Look at those kids. Cute, right? You want them to have a good life don’t you? I’m going to be a free agent soon. My next contract is likely going to be my last contract. My last shot to make the kind of money that they never have to worry about anything again. If I go to the Brewers, it could all fall apart. I could crack under the pressure and end up a non-roster invitee to the Pirates. Do you think those kids want to live in Pittsburgh? Nobody does. Give these kids a chance at a better life and don’t trade for me. You won’t regret it. I suck. It’s like my manager Eric Wedge always says “I coached CC Sabathia, I knew CC Sabathia. CC Sabathia was a friend of mine and you sir are no CC Sabathia.” You don’t want me, you want him and I can’t be him. So let’s just forget this whole thing, okay?
It’s not like you guys could afford me anyways.”
They gave away a Yankees ski hat at one of the last home games. Unfortunately I missed that one.
Doreen, it’s raining here.
“Rubbish,” Burnett said in the cramped confines of Fenway Park’s visitor’s clubhouse before Friday’s game, when asked to describe his season to this point. “That’s how I would describe it. It’s true. I mean, I’m here for a reason and I haven’t done crap to help this team this year ? that’s my opinion and that’s how I feel. But I don’t sit and dwell on it.”

I posted that blog from Neyer today; he claimed that Sheilds has been very unlucky this year……
++++++++++++++++
Unlucky, as in when hitters swing they get lucky and pound what he is throwing. I haven’t seen a lot of his outings, but what I have seen hasn’t looked like bad luck, it’s looked like poor pitching.
http://www.millerparkdrunk.com.....family.jpg
Sorry, forgot the picture of lee’s family.
If we play the Rangers, they won’t have 14 pitchers in the bullpen, 7 from the right side and 7 from the right side. They won’t have pinch runners for every position either. I wouldn’t mind if Guerro (sp?) stubbed his toe badly either.
Still haven’t heard a thing about a start time. They’re showing the Phillies-Braves came on the big screen. The trap is still on the field. Occasionally the crowd cheers and no one in the press box can figure out why.
Go KC!
Watch Gordon do something stupid here.
4-0 KC, bases still loaded with 1 out – Shields >30 pitches this inning
Thanks Chad! It’s still raining in Boston? And it’s 4-0 KC!
4-0 and still counting bases still loaded 1 out.
and Chad said that Bucholz is not pitching tomorrow…stiff back…Wakefield is starting.
Like hit a single.
What is about the last week that turns pitchers into mush?
Thanks for the good news Yankee Trader and Paco
The trap is on the field? Cool!
AJ is pitching for his playoff life -probably meaning ALCS ( I can not imagine him going in the ALDS). Even if he throws a 1 hit shut out, it won’t mean much in terms of trust
Paco, Neyer threw out sabre stats like FIP, xFIP and other alphabet soup terms to explain why he’s had an unlucky year. Me? I’m not into that.
Chad, can I loan you my Mavis Beacon typing manual. I never thought that I could say this about another human being, but, you type and spell worse than me.
came? + game
trap? + tarp.
sorry, I just had to point out that I am no longer the worst typist/speller on this board.
Betsy-
The “tarp” is “off” the field.
AJ vs. Wake tomorrow?
Run for your lives!
Kind of…. cool?…. that we get to see Wake for perhaps the last time. Send him out with a bang!
Tarp still on, but the rain has currently stopped………..still no sign of activity. They are waiting to see if their ‘drainage system’ works!
I don’t know how they are going to get this game in – I just looked at the real time Doppler radar in motion and there is tons of rain from Springfield to Boston and all up and down the East coast heading North.
Got it, lol – the tarp is off the field, but the trap is on………..
Geez and I thought that was Betsy’s miscue! Actually the trap is still on the field, as is the tarp.
The conditons have to be awful; why would the Yankees even want to pitch Andy even if the rain completely stops? Makes no sense. The grass will be wet; do we really want to see Andy slip and slide? He can go tomorrow and still pitch in game 2 ALDS if the Yankees are inclined.
Does anyone really believe that the “Yoshi blade” knife never needs sharpening?
Kansas City 4 Rays 0
Well, well, well…………
The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain -and is a pain.
Fenway drainage system = thirsty rats?
Bruce Chen is pitching a one hitter thru 4 with 5 strikeouts. Hmmm-Maybe he’ll be a cheaper FA lefty starter option!!!

It’s a trap!
Girardi and Cashman are in the outfield with what looks like the umpire crew. Epstein is out there too. This doesn’t look good.
Bronx is up and the Battery’s down
Meeting of the minds right now at Fenway. Cashman just karate choped Theo and the game is canceled.
Cash and Theo are very close; Cash might karate chop Lucchino, but never his buddy
Tarp being pulled off…NOW
Oh wait…Theo back to his feet, staggers , oh wait. Game on…Yesssss!
Tarp is coming off!
Sounds like a rain out to me. 2 GM’s and 2 managers. Big time pow-wow

Well, I also have been waiting to go out. It is about time for my ride. Whatever happens…see you later.

But even funnier would be some kind of understanding to do the best you can but don’t kill yourself – save that energy for the playoffs, you’re going to need it! (translation: get Minny in the first round.)
Game time, 10 p.m.
As long as the outfielders are wearing their scuba gear and water wings, they’ll be fine.
Sorry…tarp being MOVED….groundscrew are very active……
Yikes, they’ll be playing until 1:30 in the morning at this rate.
should be clear at 1:15 AM

thanks Chad.
oh well, 10pm
Erica, thanks for reminding me to get my flu shot; I’ll go to the local CVS – they have a minute clinic there. I love getting a flu shot because it honestly works. I’m not even talking about preventing the flu – it helps me enormously in terms of not getting colds (my colds are dreadful because I have a cough that comes from down deep, so it kills me every time I cough). I recommend a flu shot to everyone.
I’m going to go ahead and make the game post live. Might as well move the conversation over there. Thanks for waiting this thing out.

I’m not even talking about preventing the flu – it helps me enormously in terms of not getting colds (my colds are dreadful because I have a cough that comes from down deep, so it kills me every time I cough). I recommend a flu shot to everyone.

You don’t have to convince me. I agree
I used to get the flu every year in January. Seriously, every year I used two sick days the first week of the year. Then they started giving the flu shots and I never got it again
The Rays actually look like they want to lose tonight.
“Seriously? Like this is really worth it?”
I don’t think so.

12 MPH wind blowing in over the left field wall should make fore an interesting game.
Really happy for Bruce Chen. He pitched a beauty against Cleveland and left with a shutout and the pen blew it for him.
It’s not like these teams never play in crappy conditions. They play the entire month of April games in worse conditions than tonight.
Neither team wants to play a DH this weekend, especially the Yanks. They would obviously prefer to wait this one out and I don’t blame them.
It doesn’t only happen to the Yankees. Cy Chen throwing a 1 hitter through 5 against the Rays.
GF, I think it’s foolish to pitch Andy tonight then……………..just start him tomorrow.
Erica, that sounds miserable. I’m lucky -aside from my colds, I never get sick.
NYY won’t be playing a game until after 4:00 PM tomorrow, so, it’s not like they’ll be sleep deprived.
Yeah Andy tomorrow sounds good. zhe likes day games better anyways.
5-0 KC
Our buddy Mike Dunn just gave up a grand slam to Jimmy Rollins.

Neither the Yanks or the Rays want to face Texas, but the Yanks are in the drivers seat. If they lose all 3 and Tampa loses all 3 remaining games, Tampa wins the tiebreaker

Regarding your earlier posts about Ted Williams…I saw him play many times…IMO the greates hitter of all time.
But, he was one stubborn SOB…he just wouldn’t give the fans the satisfaction of his tipping his hat at them. He said he thought about it after his final at bat (the homer), but he didn’t do it.
Bruce Chen ! First major league shutout!
