Yanks go to bed alone in first place. They control their own destiny now regarding the division….win and its theirs.

So now Bucholz won’t start saturday now due to back spasms. and Beltre is in LA for the birth of his 3rd child.. That is good news for NY!!

  4. ac1 October 1st, 2010 at 10:36 pm

    yankees back in first.

  5. blake October 1st, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Not the best week for the Rays offense. 3 hit by the Orioles with Millwood starting and 2 hit by the Royals with Chen starting….that offense is nearly toothless without Longoria.

  6. trisha supporter October 1st, 2010 at 10:39 pm

“You have to feel so good for someone like Chen. He really hasn’t had an easy time in the majors, and it feels like he has finally gotten some equilibrium.

    CONGRATULATIONS BRUCE CHEN!”

Wow, a 4pm and 9pm double dip tomorrow? Long day fellas…………….but I still think it’s preferrable to playing in this quagmire.

I know Lee is great and all, but I don’t believe that a team should fear him – or the Rangers. If you’re good and you know it, you should believe you can take on any team/pitcher and win. I don’t mean that the Rangers shouldn’t be respected, but feared? To the point of wanting to win merely to avoid playing them? I don’t buy it.

  8. ericns1 October 1st, 2010 at 10:40 pm

should do 1 and 7 tomorrow except for the jerks at Fox Sports

  9. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2010 at 10:41 pm

I wonder why Fox picked up tomorrow’s game? It not like it means anything. Of course now because of Fox the players will have to stay at the ballpark until 1 am and will be exhausted on Sunday. I really hope Girardi doesn’t play the A lineup in the 2nd game.

It’s really too bad when someone’s horizions are limited only to the Yankees, only because there are so many really great things happening in the game that have nothing to do with the Yankees. But they are still achievements for players and things worth applauding and they add to the very tapestry of the game.

    I love this game!

  11. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 10:43 pm

Yankees are going to play into the wee hours on Sunday morning – I wouldn’t be too thrilled with that. My guess is that the regulars will play the first game and not the 2nd.

    Blake-

We should find out soon if the Yankees new name is “almost”, or “we did it”.

    That Vasquez game looms large.

Taking a DH’er in Beantown is a tough assignment.

Thinking this thing goes right down to the very last day.

  19. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2010 at 10:49 pm

The Yanks and Sox always play very long games so the second game could end around 1-2 am, especially with AJ and Wakefield pitching. Hopefully the Yanks win game 1 and then Girardi won’t be tempted to play the main guys in the 2nd game. Or at least play them until AJ puts the game out of reach which could be very quickly. No matter what it will be a long day for the guys.

How’s the mop? Does it need a new handle or were they able to tape up the old one?

  21. TheStraw October 1st, 2010 at 10:54 pm

Interesting. If the yanks win the earlier game and Tampa loses again, Yanks can clinch with a win in the nightcap. Could be an interesting day.

  22. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 10:54 pm

LOL The Yankees are doing the rookie hazing thing with a Saturday Night Fever theme…….after tomorrow’s game (game 1, I presume)

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/.....-1.2330164

    Stayin’ alive

The Yankees’ annual tradition with their rookies, which involves having them dress up in costumes toward the end of the season, is supposed to occur after Saturday’s game. This year’s costumes are said to have a “Saturday Night Fever” theme.

    MTU,

I agree but its looking like much more of a possibility than before. Might as well go for it…HFA would be an advantage (how much is debatable) but I don’t buy in to all the “would rather face the Twins” stuff….I think the Twins are a better team than the Rangers to be honest and you could argue that they are due against the Yankees…..I think you play hard, try to win, then play who you play in the ALDS…bad karma to do anything else.

  26. ZMAN October 1st, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Joe has a very interesting decision to make… they now control their own destiny for the division. They scratched Buchholz as well.

Aside from Posada and maybe one of the OFs, I’d play the A-team both games of the DH.

They talked all week about wanting the division… well, now they can realistically accomplish that.

  27. TheStraw October 1st, 2010 at 10:56 pm

A brilliantly managed game by Joe Girardi tonight! I just became a fan!

  31. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I do not play the A team in the 2nd game………just the first.

  32. Yank 97 October 1st, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Can’t kill Girardi whatever decision he makes. A Double-dip is not advantageous to an an older team.

And after the double dip, they play a 1 PM game the next day too. So a lonnnnggggg 24 hours.

If I were him, I’d go for it. I can understand if he takes the 2nd game of the DH off though.

  33. Yeah October 1st, 2010 at 10:59 pm

A bunch of horses running for the wire neck and neck. Photo finish, or a win by a nose.

    That’s what it looks like.

Don’t want to have to win by hoping one of the horses breaks his leg in the stretch.

That isn’t very likely. Run flat out and hope you outlast the other guy.

    gonna find out soon.

  36. TheStraw October 1st, 2010 at 11:00 pm

  38. EA October 1st, 2010 at 11:01 pm

I think it depends what TB does earlier in the day. If they have a chance to clinch tomorrow night in the 2nd game, you have to do it.

I don’t think playing the position players is a big deal… it’s the bullpen decisions that will be interesting. Obviously none of the A guys will go in both games. A nice blowout in one of them would be nice.

Actually after looking at the schedule…the Rays play at 7:10 tomorrow night….so their game won’t be over by the time 2nd Yankee game starts. So while its possible that the Yankees still could clinch tomorrow….it’s unlikely that they will know if that could happen when the lineup is made out for game 2.

  48. West Coast Yankee Fan October 1st, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Trish repeating something over and over again on a baseball post is troll behavior. That’s frowned on here.

  49. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 11:07 pm

The night game should be an artistic masterpiece – though Matsuzaka pitched brilliantly against the Yanks last time

  50. TheStraw October 1st, 2010 at 11:07 pm

    Good point Blake.

  51. Captain Clutch October 1st, 2010 at 11:07 pm

It would be nice if AJ can tell Girardi after he warms up if he “has nothing” then start the B lineup. It’s unreal how many times in the last 3 months we have heard Vazquez and AJ say “I had nothing” after a game. Or start the A lineup and as soon as AJ gets tattooed which could be in the 2nd inning then pull the guys.

  52. blake October 1st, 2010 at 11:08 pm

I like Pettite vs Wakefield….would be really nice to get that first one and put the pressure on the Rays for their game.

  54. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 11:08 pm

That makes it iffy as to Phil……………..the Yankees want to pitch him tomorrow OR Sunday if Sunday means something. However, how are they going to know that in advance? I would pitch Phil anyway and, if need be, go to Nova on Sunday

  55. Yogi Mantle October 1st, 2010 at 11:11 pm

The Rays have done this pretty much all year, playing great, then fizzle. Not all that different from the Yanks.

  56. KPB October 1st, 2010 at 11:12 pm

I think the A team goes the first game and if the score is lopsided enough of KC over TB by time the second game starts, I’d use the A team again. If not, use some of the back ups.

  61. m October 1st, 2010 at 11:13 pm

I like it when the Rays lose. This weekend should be great. Maybe TB has checked out mentally, and just want the playoffs to start.

Yankees control their destiny. Let’s see how badly they want it.

  62. blake October 1st, 2010 at 11:14 pm

I doubt we’ll see Hughes tomorrow now….if the Yankees win 1 game tomorrow then the worst they can be is tied going in to Sunday’s game….that means Sunday would mean something. If it worked out that it didn’t then Hughes could still get his work in Sunday anyway.

  64. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 11:15 pm

Blake, I don’t know – either way, he’s really going to pitch just a few innings; he’s not going to go 6 or 7, so does it really matter if he pitches Sunday?

  65. m October 1st, 2010 at 11:16 pm

Hughes is a possibility? So much for IP limits! I’m not complaining, mind you. But we’ll see how badly they want it, if at all.

I don’t think it’s a matter of playing to avoid a particular team. I think the players want it, it’s a matter of pride.

  75. blake October 1st, 2010 at 11:22 pm

    Betsy,

I don’t know….I wouldn’t be so sure about that. If the Yankees are up a game heading in to Sunday and all they have to do is win to take the division then I think we may see a regular start from Hughes. He could pitch Sunday and still be in line to pitch game 3 on normal rest…..if they won the division then he could pitch Game 3 in Texas on 5 days rest….if he threw 6 innings then that would give him 181 for the season….which I think they would live with.

  76. West Coast Yankee Fan October 1st, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Sorry Trish. There is nothing more legitimate for a fan to do than criticize the manager, especially one like Joe Girardi. If you don’t like it, tough. Go cry and whine about it to someone who cares. There are countless national media and local media as well who think Girardi has done a questionable job at best this year. If you disagree fine. But you are not going to dictate what I say about Girardi.

Starting Hughes Sunday is a much better strategy. Unless something crazy happens (Tampa loses, we win both and clinch the division or we lose both and Tampa wins and we lose the division)m the Sunday game will be very meaningful. Though it depends how tomorrow night goes. If AJ is getting rocked early and we’re hitting Wakefield and we need the game to be settled down, he would probably be brought in.

  81. Betsy October 1st, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Blake, that’s fair – and that requires an adjustment in their strategy. They need to believe that Phil can handle this; his starts in the post-season are a lot more important than even a division clinching game.

    Betsy,

Considering how Hughes has thrown at times this year after long layoffs….I think it actually may be better if he were to start one of these games and just have a normal outing…I really don’t see how 6 innings is going to affect much regarding the rest of his career.

I understand and like the fact that they are protecting him but I think setting an arbitrary number for what is “too much” is somewhat ridiculous…..if he doesn’t start this weekend then he’ll be making his playoff start on like 2 weeks rest. If you throw the innings limits out the window then I’d actually feel better about his start next week if he made a normal one this weekend.

  89. stuckey99 October 1st, 2010 at 11:40 pm

Joe Girardi, manager of the defending World Series champions, is 2 wins and a Tampa loss away from securing all that a team can secure during regular season play.

Where exactly is the bar if ‘all that a manager can accomplish’ isn’t high enough?

I so don’t care about tonight’s game or what happens or even who wins the division that I think I will just call it a night.

I think any weeping and wailing will be nothing more than a tempest in a teapot because you can’t guage much after this kind of rain delay. It is what it is.

    Adios

First its good bye but you are still here. Why ? , no life, no game, no date night, no video night. Only a big bucket of extra crispy KFC for you and your Yankee Stuffed Doll.”

No mel you have it wrong. THAT’S the bullsh*t that’s got to stop. Like two gossippy little girls, these two losers continue to stalk my posts, as KPB pointed out.

It seems you always got all over posters who jumped on things Betsy said. Where’s the love?

I will NOT put up with juvenile a-holes stalking my posts. Its gotten to the point where it doesn’t matter what I post, they’re like two freaks waiting to make each other giggle.

Notice that I dont post to either freak unless of course they feel the need to stalk my posts and make rude remarks. They get in my face and they’ll wish they hadn’t.

    Hi all,

Back from dinner and the Rays lost, but the Yankees never got started. My problem with all this is that it is tough to win a double header regardless. It is tough to start a game at 9 PM and then another at 1 PM the next day.

I am sure some of the Red Sox have flights after Sunday’s game so they can’t start the game a little later, and I guess the Yankees go back to NY regardless of whether they open the ALDS in NY or on the road.

I am thinking that is a lot of baseball in 2 days, but then I am not as young as these guys are.

Oh Trish get over yourself. Your incessant idolizing of Girardi is just as open to critique as my criticism of him is. I think he’s a poor manager, that’s my right to think that, that’s a legit baseball perspective. If you don’t like it. Tough.

Here’s the difference child. I can debate you on the merits. All you can do is call names. Try getting over YOURself.

Now you’ve taken up enough of my valuable time tonight. I’m sure you’re very proud of the third-grade team-tagging you did with that other crackpot.

Night everyone else. Once again, KPB, thank you sincerely for noticing the stalking.

The merits? You’re the stalker child with your troll-like “yawn” – “yawn” – “yawn”. I posted copious information on the specific mistakes Girardi has made, even game examples. It just bothers you when anyone dares to criticize anything to do with the Yankees. If you want to be “that kind of fan”, go ahead. But do not dare to tell others what they can or cannot do when talking baseball. I hope that’s clear.
