For all the hooplah about the Phillies, they struggled for a long time and didn?t find themselves until sometime in the 2nd half. Once a team gets past the Division Series ? and especially the LCS ? that?s not the same team that may have struggled before the playoffs started. It?s extremely premature to say that the Phillies are going to blow their way through the WS while getting mere token opposition from NL teams or even the AL.

The Twins are pitching Blackburn, with a 5.42 ERA, in game 4; so tell me the Yankees are the only team with concerns, lol

  2. Chase October 6th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

    Nice Houdini act by Lee.

  3. BIG AL October 6th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Lee and Texas got lucky in the 1st. Bases loaded 1 out, then 2 K’s.

Lee usually gets better as the game goes on. Should be a good one.

  4. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  5. Doreen October 6th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

How lucky is Jeff Francouer? Getting into the post-season after spending a good part of the season with the Mets.

  6. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

“Much more slimming look than the Rangers unis! lol”

lmao! The pinstripes do make ya look 10 lbs lighter! :)
    __
In the spirit of fairness and honesty, Lee did a good job of getting out of that jam – however, he did so with the cheap call on Pena. Not sure the inning turns out the same if the umpire makes the correct call.
    __
Concerned Citizen – I hope you were not addressing me with that Jeter fake comment. I dont think he faked hit, nor do I care whether he faked it. It happens once a game on average, and nobody ever complains. But Jeter is and will be pointed to and referred to whenever such a circumstance arises again – or in the case of Pena, something having nothing to do with the Jeter play.

  7. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

LOL Doreen… how about Wagner… I think he has a better shot than Francouer to make it further.

  8. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS TWO ZERO

  9. Cashmoney October 6th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Price aren’t fooling these guys with his fbs..time to adapt AJ!

  10. Betsy October 6th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Geez, even Sam thinks our rotation sucks, lol

  11. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I want the Rangers to win. I think the Yanks can beat either team but the Rays team speed concerns me. That being said, the Rangers are a very very good ballclub. Lee is a true ace and their lineup is very solid. The Yanks will really earn a repeat this year as all the clubs (outside of Cincy and Atlanta imo) could easily win it all and are very good clubs.

Personally, I’d just rather face the Rangers next round. Would be a fantastic series…

  12. Doreen October 6th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

    I forgot about Wagner.

  13. Cashmoney October 6th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

I can’t stand Joe Maddon and his whiny face. I hope the Rays steps on this so called spunky underdog and throttle it to death!

Joe Maddon is evil and whiny!

  14. upstate kate October 6th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

thanks for the score updates for those of us not near a TV

Have a great time Yanksgal, a cheeseburger and chili sounds good.
Enjoy the game Unknown, don’t forget your Yankee gear

  15. Cashmoney October 6th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

    I hope the Rangers !

  16. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I’m really not sure which team I want to win this series. Facing Price 2 or 3 times is just as scary as facing Lee.

  17. upstate kate October 6th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I don’t care who wins (except for the Yankees of course)
The only teams I really don’t like are the red sox and the angels, and neither of them made the play offs.

  18. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

By the way, it’s a good thing CR9 isn’t a Rays fan, he’d probably be going on a rampage against Welke right now.

  19. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:25 pm

upstate – I agree. I dont like the red sox or angels, however I would never want the rays to win – because then Id have to hear those idiots on the Rays broadcast next year. Also, we Yankees fans should not want the Rangers to win it all because that could lure Lee to stay with Texas.

  20. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:25 pm

    ———————–

I agree on those two but the Rays are also on my list. I hate Joe Maddon with a passion. He’s so arrogant and reminds me of a little weasel. Plus, I never really cared for some of their dugout antics and their postgame celebrations where they would celebrate like they won the world series and jump up and down. I do love David Price though…. Great pitcher.

  21. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Patrick – Do you think it’d be possible to leave out those comments? Im doing my best to refrain from annoying people and to get along with everyone for the sake of the Yankees. Thanks :)

  22. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Both teams are putting good swings on the ball early. Neither pitcher really has settled in yet. Always seems like in game 1 it takes guys a few innings to settle down. I remember CC let up a couple runs early in game 1 last year vs. Minny before settling down..

  23. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

CR9, just so we’re clear, that wasn’t an insult towards you. I just know how passionate you are about bad umpiring. And that phantom foul ball was REALLY bad umpiring. I was listening to Francesa when it happened and he flipped out

  24. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Oh ok CR9 sorry about that, I didn’t mean it as a jab towards you

  25. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

    CR-

I heard Joe West and Tim McClelland are on the schedule for the ALCS just for you

Tyler, I have no dog in this show; I don’t care who wins – except the Yankees!

  28. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Gameday has Lee getting squeezed on quite a few pitches. According to it the first pitch to Rodriguez was right down the middle and called a ball.

  29. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

    Patrick – Gotcha! :)

  30. Betsy October 6th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

It doesn’t matter to me because if the Yankees are playing well, they can beat anyone.

  31. Betsy October 6th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

    Later!

  32. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

    Betsy-

I’m not obsessing over it but I think a Yanks-Rangers series would be enjoyable though I think Nolan Ryan is a d-bag also with how he spent so much money this season with other teams picking up the tab. Regardless, I think that would be a better series than Rays-Yanks at least bsaeball wise to watch..

  33. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Oh snap better jump in on this one..

    Doreen,

    My lineup:

    Jeter SS
    Swisher RF
    Teixeira 1B
    Rodriguez 3B
    Cano 2B
    Thames DH
    Granderson CF
    Posada C
    Gardner LF

Equals 1 win for the Yankees

  34. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

BTW just a thought… I can almost guarantee that a rotation with C.C. and Lee at the top and our offense will get us a ring next year… so if we can just grind it out this year and combine our talent with a little bit of luck… a 3-peat is possible. I dunno why i feel more comfortable about next year than i do about this year. If Pett signs on for another year we will have THREE top lefties(if Andy keeps up his efforts of this year n last year) so then I don’t see how any other team will have a better pitching staff. No not even the Phillies.

  35. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

    1 Jeter SS
    2 Swisher RF
    3 Tex 1B

    8 Thames DH
    9 Gardner LF

  36. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Lee escapes with another RISP stranded. Could be costly to the Rays, not to have gotten to Lee early when they had the chance.

  37. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

    Swisher RF
    Teixeira 1B

  38. Patrick October 6th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

    CR9,

I don’t think Lee signs with the Rangers even if they win it all. He’s going to hit the market and go wherever the most money is. That place will be the Bronx

  39. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Joe West and Tim McClelland would have given runs to the Rays there :) )

  40. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

the latest episode of Boardwalk empire… the best so far or do you like the premiere better?

  41. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Patrick – re Lee: You’re probably right, and I hope you’re right.

  42. JM October 6th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

The Phillies are a very dangerous team. They slumped for part of the season in part because they had a boatload of injuries, but they peaked the second half, especially after they acquired Oswalt and Hamels started pitching closer to his 2008 form than last year’s.

They are not to be underestimated. I would love to see Cincy knock them off but I don’t think it’s happening. But if they meet the Giants in the NLCS, that could be a great series.

  46. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

    JM-

I think that Philly is going to crush Cincy. Just my opinion. I’d love to see Cincy win it too but those Phillies are stacked and really hot right now.

Philly vs. SF would be great though.

    Linececum vs. Halladay
    Cain vs. Oswalt
    Sanchez/Bumgarner vs. Hamels

  47. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

0 Days, 5 Hours, and 51 Minutes until Game 1 of the ALDS

(I believe this is what is known as the “homestretch”… YAY!!!!)

  49. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Nelson Cruz crushed that. 3-0 Rangers on a 3-0 meatball from Price.

  50. Tyler October 6th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

i heard Johnny Damon is making an appearance at game 1 as a hot dog vendor.

  51. pat October 6th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Was listening to Francesa on my way home and he had a Minny announcer on- didn’t catch the name.

Asked him who is pitching best lately for Twins and he said Blackburn. He said Liriano hasn’t been good lately and Duensing doesn’t impress him. Said Pavano has extra incentive because opponent is the Yanks.

He also said Jays hit 10 HRs in Target last week.

I remember Jeter hitting a HR at Target when they played them. Makes me wonder if maybe the park does not play as big as people think or the idea that it does has gotten into some peoples heads.

  62. Doreen October 6th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

    pat -

Kind of like how YS got the rep as a “band box.”

They use Mauer as the example, but his HRs were down anyway, everywhere.

Also, Minny didn’t hit any HRs last year.

Something tells me, if ARod gets a hold of one, it’ll go out.

  63. JM October 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

    Tyler,

I agree. Philly is going to crush Cincy. But I can dream, can’t I? :)

I grew up near Philly as a Yankees fan and my boss now is a huge Phillies fan so I have taken my share of abuse from the Philly Phaithful over the years. Hence my tremendous dislike for the team.

  64. m October 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I hate rooting for a division rival, but I just can’t get behind Texas.

I won’t root for either, but the Rays appear to be the weaker team.

  65. Cashmoney October 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Lee has gotten a little lucky here with the line drives.

  66. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

W-L and ERA from September 1st

    Liriano 2-3 4.59
    Pavano 2-1 6.12
    Duensing 3-1 3.77
    Blackburn 2-3 3.93

    C.C 3-2 3.35
Pettitte 0-1 6.75 OUCH but understandable
Hughes 1-2 4.85(the win is from a relief appearance)

  67. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

  74. TheStraw October 6th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Price not looking so hot today.

  75. pat October 6th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Rays playing a little tight? Longoria/Pena usually make that play.

  76. MG October 6th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

I’m not watching the game nor do I really care but if the Rays lose today and Price doesn’t pitch well (and he isn’t, obviously) they are in real trouble with Shields pitching game 2.

  77. Jim October 6th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

is there some reason everyone is rooting for Texas? I think they played the Yankees much tougher this year than the Rays.

  78. ericns1 October 6th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

    The Price is not right!

  79. m October 6th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

  81. tampayank October 6th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Rays defense has beem sloppy, playing tight? Especially the Zobrist play

  82. Cashmoney October 6th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Price has no plan B apparently, I think he threw all fbs in that inning.

  84. Jerkface October 6th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Target field was dead last in HRs in the league. By a lot.

NYS: 40% more HRs than average
Target: 40% less HRs than average

Lets not look at what the blue jays did in a series and make a generalization without checking the numbers. Though I agree, most mediots did not check the numbers on NYS last year after the weird first half.

  85. CR9 October 6th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

“not rooting for either…would like it to go all 5 games tho” Hear, Hear!

  86. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    Molina brothers= winners

  87. Cashman needs to go October 6th, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Why is it that only on the yankees the Molina’s don’t hit..(yes i know its bengie and not jose but jose wasn’t too bad with the bat this year)

  88. m October 6th, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Rooting for extra innings in that series, too.

  89. NYY fan in NH October 6th, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Lee is the only dominant non-Yankee pitcher in the playoffs as far as I’m concerned. If Tampa can take them out – preferably in a 19 inning game 5, that would make me happy. Just glad the Yanks don’t have to face Lee 2x in 5 games.

  104. yanksfansince67 October 6th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

FIOS telecast (which apparently no one on this board has) features an additional local commercial break right smack in the middle of the action. Guess they did not stop the program for regular programming.

Actually, I disagree. The Yankees were having some success against Halladay before he left for PHI. Lee, on the other hand, has embarrassed them each time out. I like our chances against Halladay better than against Lee.

  133. theREALkevin October 6th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

    go Rangers!!!!!!

can’t predict how the rest of the series will go, but man it’d be nice to see the Rays bow out in the first round, imo they were and still are the Yanks’ biggest competition.

twins in the ALDS and the Rangers in the ALCS? sign me up

  134. Noreaster October 6th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Probably covered, but my two cents on this series. The Yankees have to win one of the first two to steal home field advantage. For the Twins, game one is a *must* win. If the Twins don’t beat CC with their Ace at home they either have to:
    1) Beat CC at home with the immortal Nick Blackburn on the mound
    -or-
    2) sweep Pettitte (road), Hughes (home), Pettitte (road).

Obviously, if they beat CC at home then Pettitte vs. Pavano becomes a *must* win for the Yankees for all the same reasons.

    Looking forward to tonight!

Bye bye, Javy!

  137. JM October 6th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

I wouldn’t be so sure that the Yanks could handle Halladay. Didn’t he only give up one hit in one of the Yanks’ games against Toronto last year? I remember they did beat him once but the guy at his best is a beast.

  138. UnKnown October 6th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

  139. Bronx Jeers October 6th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

The Rays appear to be in a spot of trouble here in game 1.

It’s funny but the Rays rotation after Price is none too great but is anybody pointing that out.

By the way I read yesterday that it was Dan Shaughnessy ripping the rotation after CC who was on ESPN last Friday when Arod flipped to another station.

Furthermore Shaughnessy heard about it and approached Alex the next day to ask him why he would do such a thing. Duh.

And apparently ole Dannyboy is not very popular in the Sox clubhouse as well.

  140. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

    JM,
Halladay would obviously go against C.C. and C.C. this year, won his start against the Phillies allowing 3 runs in 7 innings striking out seven.

  141. blake October 6th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

If this score holds up then the Rays are in big trouble in this series. The pitching matchups don’t give them any advantage and they are inferior offensively to the Rangers.

  142. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

    JM,
Furthermore, Doc gave up six runs in six innings against us this year and lost his start.

On any given game day anyone can look great or not! That is why they play the games! The media has to either embrace the Yankees or belittle them to get attention of the fans and with a perceived Beantown bias in the sports media the talk is usually anti-Yankees.

Price was due for a letdown. It happens. As a Yankee fan, you want to see the Yanks sweep the Twins & TB vs. Tex go 5 games to throw off their pitching rotations.

I like the Yanks chances because the Yanks A-Lineup is circular and very good.

no manager will ever win a single game with his intelligence, no matter how much or little they have of it – on the other hand the really bad (and dumb) managers will lose many games with their lack of intelligence….

putting baldelli in the lineup when he’s had what 30 ab’s all year in the majors is pretty dumb….but then again what do i know maddon was voted the best manager among the 8 managers in the postseason…

btw – in a crucial game in september the best manager forgot he didn’t have a lefthanded reliever warming up in his bullpen and had a righthander (grant ball-four) face curtis granderson in which he promptly homered off of him to essentially win the game…if THAT type of managing wins him the best manager award then i really don’t know what to say about the intelligence of the people voting on these things

I am aware of that but Laura had mentioned that the yankees had some success off of him prior to him being with the phillies (which is why i had last year and career stats)…additionally halladay was in the midst of a losing streak where he lost something like 6 or 7 games (Out of a total of 10 games he lost all year) out of 9 during that streak when the yankees beat him this year – so something was definetely not right with him that night…..

still i’d rather not face the phillies this year if the yankees are fortunate enough to make it to the WS…give me tim lincecum, jon sanchez and matt cain (and that average offense) over halladay, hamels and oswalt anyday…

  180. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Their highlight of this post-season was that 30/30 special on ESPN last night titled “4 days in October.” I don’t think I’ve ever hated anything like I hate the Redsox. Oh and talking about the damn ESPN network… why is it that in the beginning of Sportscenter they show the Saints, the Lakers but no Yankees? We ARE the latest winners in MLB right?

  181. yankeefeminista October 6th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Well, Maddon does love Baldelli, and therefore probably let the small sample size cloud his judgment. However, I do think generally that Maddon will make sometimes unorthodox choices and that ability to think outside the box serves him well in terms of juggling his lineups, and taking managing risks. I like that. But I would not have played Baldelli today.

  182. Laura - I Bleed Blue October 6th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

  184. yanks 27 October 6th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Philly has has a sick 1-2-3. Oswalt has a 1 something ERA since joining Philly. Hamels has reverted back to his 2008 form. Doc is Doc. 49-19 since July. Anything can happen obviously, but they are set up well.

If we face them in the WS, I would be shocked if they didn’t go 3-man. No way they will let Joe Blanton start a game in YS.

Lee hasn’t been aces against us because he wants to play here with C.C. j/k

  195. Laura - I Bleed Blue October 6th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Those Lee stats are old, as in early days with CLE old. His most recent starts against us have been impressive.

Zobrist could pass for Doc’s younger brother.

“4.42 career ERA against the yankees.”

Yes, but most of that was accumulated prior to 08 when he sucked.

From 08 on, he has a 2.30 ERA against us in 8 games.

    Jason,
Not to put down Doc, I mean he IS the man but he lost 10 games in the NL while C.C. lost only seven in the AL

    *********

Yes he lost 10 games but in 2 of those games he pitched complete games giving up 1 run in 1 game (phils lost 2-0), and 4 runs in the other (phils lost 4-3), he also lost 2 games where he gave up 3 runs in 7 innings (phils lost 3-0 and 3- 2) and in the perfect game he threw the phils won 1-0 so essentially he HAD to throw a perfect game to even win that game…

now watch him go out today and give up 10 runs in 3 innings ;-)

  202. Chambliss October 6th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Liriano could end up being great, but the Yankees appear to be lucky the way that Lee is dealing.

I can’t stand how most of the Rays are always spitting… is that considered “cool” in Tampa?

  211. Jim October 6th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Jason, maybe I’m wrong about Halladay and he made some corrections this year, I haven’t seen him pitch much in the 2nd half but he seemed like a pitcher in the midst of a transition last year. I hazard to guess that Josh Beckett would have won 20 games in the NL East this year. The NL is a weak hitting league mostly because the Yankees/Sox dominance has forced AL teams to buy up all the top hitters in an effort to keep pace. Don’t think Doc doesn’t know that. I’m hoping it’s in the back of his mind along with that 1-3 record.

  212. BTX October 6th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

This game is showing us that the Yanks were wise to avoid Cliff Lee. Guy is a machine. We are much better off facing Liriano and the Twins

yeah, yeah… he is capable of throwing a great game, but he is no Cliff Lee.

  215. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

    Jim,
Let’s just say that if the Phillies and Yankees switched Leagues… Yankees would have 105+ wins and the Phillies wouldn’t even break 90.

  216. Faiaz October 6th, 2010 at 4:16 pm

    Yankee,
absolutely no blackouts… it said it on the contract agreement… I mean if you’re paying 10 bucks for basically a month it’s only right for them to make sure there are no blackouts… best part is YOU get to control which camera you want to watch.

Right, whatever Liriano does or doesn’t do, you have to want to face him over Lee and Texas. Only thing I like about Texas is their park, but hopefully we can play some small(er) ball and not be swinging for the distant Target fences all night.

i’ve never done coke before but have known a few friends in my day that have – and that is a habit that coke users get when they orally ingest cocaine (sort of trying to lick off the last of the residual powder thats left on their lips) ..

i’ve got nothing against the man, and maybe its just a nervous tick and nothing else – but if he’s trying to sell the baseball world that he got busted the ONLY time he ever did coke then there are alot of “naive” people in baseball – then again you can’t be more “naive” then good old bud selig anyway….

Francisco Liriano has not thrown more than 110 pitches since May 26th (coincidentally against the Yankees)

Liriano has not gone further than 7 innings since June 11th.

Liriano has thrown 104, 95, 103, 81, 61, 91 pitches respectively in his starts in September.

With this information it doesn’t seem that Liriano could really handle more than 100-105 pitches tonight. If he goes past that he may be fatigued and the Yankees can take advantage.

16-17 pitches per inning and the Yankees can get Liriano out of there in 6.

Is this going to be another October where all the closers except MO suck and the others all implode in big games and give the other team momentum?

Last year, Nathan’s blew a save and and it shifted momentum. Street blew a save in an elimination game. Papelbomb blew a save and it eliminated the Sox. Broxton blew a save with the Dodgers on the verge of tying the series, and they ended up losing in 5. Lidge imploded in a tie game with a chance to tie the series. Fuentes blew a save in game 2. Franklin blew a save that killed the Cardinals (though that was Holliday’s fault).

Nice adjustment by Neftali and the Rays are done for the day.

Cliff Lee bent a bit at the beginning but did not break. Sometimes I think his brain produces it’s own Xanax.

The guy’s just cool out there and you can throw him up against anybody and you always got a shot to win the game.

  267. yanks 27 October 6th, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Honestly, tomorrow’s game is a horrible matchup for both sides.

Wilson lead the league in walks this year… and walks are the only way for the Rays to score runs considering they hit .240. He also is a 5 inning pitcher.

    Small Game Shields sucks.

I’d expect lots of bullpen tomorrow.
