Berkman and Pettitte give Yankees a chance to sweep
Lance Berkman had his first defining moment with the Yankees. Andy Pettitte had only his most recent. Berkman gave the Yankees the lead twice, first with a home run then with an RBI double. It was enough for another Yankees comeback against the Twins, a 5-2 win that was Pettitte’s 19th career postseason victory. Looking like the all-star he was in the first half, Pettitte rolled through seven innings to put the Yankees one win away from yet another series sweep.

A formulaic win.
vintage pettite!! Great win!
What a great performance by Pettite. What was that about the Yankees rotation being weak again??
Who died? Seriously, these guys sound subdued. Shocked.
Pitching was so good tonight on the Yankees side, so glad they got it together tonight!
Guess Joe and Cash’s ” Brady Bunch” strategy looks pretty good so far.
Great game. Thanks Andy, Kerry, Mo. Thanks Grandy, Berkman, etc.

Vintage Andy tonight! Who was worried about Andy?
Great job by the Yankees.
Have to be in the Twins head’s now.
Hope we get the sweep Saturday.
This is why I think Hughes is the key. I expect CC and Andy to pitch well. I think Hughes will too, but I have to see it.
Second night in a row everyone in the lineup got on base at least once.
Got a feeling a couple of the spam ridden trolls have been eliminated.
Made for a much more functional game thread.
Pettitte was great. Very satisfying to see the American Idol get beat, though its too bad it wasn’t more of a beat down against that turd.
Mo is Mo-like.
Berkman comes up big for the Yanks with his 2nd HR for them. Nicely done, boys!
I predicted Granderson would be the key for the Yankees this post-season and I’m just so happy that he’s proving me to be correct. He took a LOT of grief from fans and media alike and now they can just sit back and watch as he dominates.
Berkman? How many fans got on his case for having a rough 22 at bats ? More than I care to remember. Plus remember that he’d been in Houston almost his whole life………… I always believed that Sir Lancelot would come through.
What can I say about Kerry Wood? I love the guy. Holy smokes – we got him for nothing and look what he’s done.
Then, finally, Andy…………I knew if he was healthy and ready that he’d be good, but I did have my concerns about that. Now? He basically told the media to stuff it – just stuff it. I’m SOOOOOOOO sick of the media killing our rotation………..and Andy was just tremendous.
Now, it’s up to Phil in the biggest game of his career.
Good thing the Yanks have HFA… Tampa is grateful too. lol.
1 Day, 23 Hours, 16 Minutes until Game 3 of the ALDS
The last postseason HR Berkman hit before tonight was with Houston with Andy on the mound.
Wendelstedt had his own strike zone tonight….

Watching Pavano go down the 2nd year in a row in the postseason where he pitched pretty well is very satisfying in its own right.
So close, but not enough Carl.
Now you get to spend another year thinking about those 1 or 2 pitches that got away.
Sucks that a Net game is on YES right now
I have the YES postgame Betsy

I was thinking the same thing, SJ, the trolls left the building early tonight, even before the Yankees took the lead. And I wonder if the West Coast Disgruntled one was asked to tone it down or be banned from yet another Yankees blog.
Nice for timing down until the game 3….thats the way we roll when we win the first two games, I don’t think anyone for the Yankees want a off day right now.
Oh wait, they must have changed it – thanks!
I truly thank you all for putting up with me tonight. I whined about umpires and broadcasting because I was SO SO ANGRY! Thanks again, I’ll make the next 2 days as enjoyable for all of you as humanly possible – if Im even human
CC did what I thought Andy would do. Struggle a little, but battle, and keep the team in the game.
Andy did what I thought CC would do. Dominate.
The reverse worked out just fine!
Laptop battery was about to die and I didn’t feel like getting my charger cable. How was the game thread tonight?
betsy stalker chick, the only thing that you predicted was that you would post 100 times and be a pian in the behind. 1 week you like a guy and the next 3 weeks you hate him. just like you do with hughes.
Hi Trisha,
I tried in about the 7th inning when we got home. No luck, but I enjoyed just watching the best part of the game.
Sir Lancelot on YES: The guy has been stuck in nowheresville for years -this has to be so sweet for him.
SAS, fortunately YES switched over. TBS? Ick…………they sounded like they had just taken sleeping pills, lol
I was about to say that MLB Network has a better post game show but Mitch Williams is in the process of saying the Twins batters got themselves out instead of Andy pitching well. Is he for real?
SAS – have you officially applied yet?
I see that not all the trolls have been eliminated
I was a very negative person here for a few weeks. I was wrong. I should have believed
if Andy retires. the Yankees should offer him a postseason starter’s job.
Since we’re up 2-0, why don’t we let AJ pitch game 3? We’ve got some breathing room.
Ill be bringing my Yankees flag to work tomorrow and putting it in the window, so my boss will have to look at it all day.(my class is right off the front lobby by her office) Its going to be great. Now the Yanks get the chance to clinch at home.
I didn’t put on MLB because I don’t trust any non-Yankee network to give the Yankees credit.
One person I forgot : Mo………….so again, is he done?
Oh My Hughes is over his innings limit!
gimme a break kay
I was about to say that MLB Network has a better post game show but Mitch Williams is in the process of saying the Twins batters got themselves out instead of Andy pitching well. Is he for real?
***********************************************
It seems like there is a rule of one devils advocate per panel. Cause thats what he has to be doing by saying that.
SJ and MG – agreed.
LGY – disagree. Just a wild guess, but I don’t think Pavano spends any time thinking about his failures.
“if Andy retires. the Yankees should offer him a postseason starter’s job.”
Seriously I PRAY Andy comes back next season. My worst call ever here was that Andy was finished (after the 2008 season)
KW’s 8th inning performance is very encouraging! very much!
Now Hughes could send the Yankees to the ALCS.
These are the kind of close wins that they weren’t getting in September.
Couple of thoughts…
1) This should put to rest the overblown “question marks” regarding the Yankees starting rotation. Andy was absolutely terrific. If Phil comes out and dominates on Saturday night, I look forward to the reaction of ESPN and other assorted “experts” on the subject.
2) Berkman earned his stripes today. I love that he’ll finally have some respect and feel the love on Saturday night from the fans. This is a guy who flew under the radar while posting dominant power numbers on par with almost anyone else in the league over the last decade. He didn’t have to come here, but I’m awfully glad he did.
3) Kerry Wood looked virtually unhittable. If he can throw the ball like that, the opposition is essentially looking at seven inning games from here on out. Tough to underscore the importance of that.
Trisha,
I tried to sign in and couldn’t. I get so frustrated with the computer. I am not too good with it. No problem, I just watched the game some with my husband.

Thanks everyone for playing!
You know I’m not much into conspiracy theories but……..
Tonight, MLB announced they are going to have on of their execs serve as a middleman between the media and the umpires for the rest of the playoffs.
According to TBS’s pitch trax, and my own eyes, Hunter Wendelstedt missed about 40% of the pitches thrown in this game.
Yet, in the last couple of innings, the Pitch Trax was off the screen.
Malfunction or did the new spokesman make a call to the TBS production truck?
Inquiring minds want to know.
I blink and Uncle Ellsworth and CB are commenting???
It’s really October now!
See you later.
Uncle, well Phil is an unknown………..but it still ticks me off that he’s made out to be crap. I hope he shuts everyone up on Saturday.
Trisha – Everybody makes mistakes. But nobody makes as many as Hunter Wendelstedt tonight, if they can even be called mistakes. hehe
Angel I was kidding about Antartica
Kenny with the line! Bridge to Mo is made outta Wood.
proably stolen from a lohudder
The media and tv loudmouths are the only one’s not happy about the Yankees winning. The network beancounters love it.
Wells was pretty funny on TBS just now.
Kept calling the Andy stare the “peekaboo”
“I was a very negative person here for a few weeks. I was wrong. I should have believed”
Half the battle is acknowledging it. And you had a ton of company here so don’t kill yourself for that.
But here’s a question. Do you think under similar circumstances, say next season, you could find your way to being positive based on what you have witnessed? Because if you can, you have it licked. And we could also use the company since I think we sycophants are more the minority here.
Trisha,
I couldn’t agree more. I’m not ready for Andy to retire. I will make a deal; one more year and I won’t ask for more than that.
“Yet, in the last couple of innings, the Pitch Trax was off the screen.
Malfunction or did the new spokesman make a call to the TBS production truck?”
SJ44 -
You know Im not much into conspiracies myself :wink wink: but that’s exactly what happened.
And to be fair, Wendelstedt missed pitches for both teams. 40% sounds like a reasonable number. And that’s unacceptable in baseball, and certainly not acceptable in the playoffs, period.
Hurray Yankees!!!!
Betsy -
One down (Andy) – ha ha everyone who said CC and pray for rain!!! – and one to go (Phil). Boy do I hope he comes out strong.
nice to actually be able to get some work done after the game for a change. Wish ever game started at 6pm
Just saw couple videos of Brian Duensing , He looks like he has decent fastball 90-92 and a really good change up. Should be an interesting match up in the Bronx with master Hughes there.
Uncle Ellsworth October 7th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
GB calls it!
How are you sir?
———————————————————————————————————————-
More of a prayer than a prediction, Ellie. Doing fine, Bud. Thanks for asking. How have you been?
What’s this with Antartctica? Were you down there whaling or just climbing the mountains? Not sure being down there in the winter would be that comfortable. Nice to see you back, by the way.
“I tried to sign in and couldn’t. I get so frustrated with the computer. I am not too good with it. No problem, I just watched the game some with my husband.”
SAS, please listen to what I’m saying. Remember when you joined our other forum? You had to actually apply for membership and be approved. Until that happened you couldn’t sign in.
Well this forum is the same way. You have to apply all over again. Once you do, you’ll be approved. Then you can automatically sign in.
Now it’s hughes turn. A great experience for him pitching as a starter for the first time in the postseason.
Doreen, I still love CC for putting that clown in his place.
I understood concerns about Andy’s health, but my word – the media made it sound like he was shot. Phil? He’s garbage and his last start against the Sox didn’t count.
I don’t know what Phil will do. Dominate? We might have to wait until next year for that, but I will take a good solid performance. For sure he’s going to be amped up; I know he’s laid back, but I can’t imagine what he’s feeling now. He’s going to have to be able to channel that adrenaline in a positive way.
Betsy October 7th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
Uncle, well Phil is an unknown………..but it still ticks me off that he’s made out to be crap. I hope he shuts everyone up on Saturday.
————————-
I hope so too. But most of the fly balls that were hit these last two games would be gone in YS. He’s been throwing more ground balls though since he started throwing the change. So we’ll see.
Wait until this team starts hitting on all cylinders.
SJ
Jeff Passan According to this plot of Hunter Wendelstedt’s K zone, 17 of his 43 called strikes tonight should have been balls. http://bit.ly/9scF3x

I’m well GB, thanks
I was doing Extreme tourism.
Myself and a few hardy souls replicated the the trials of Lord Shackleton replete with ewatin penguins…. lots of penguis
CR9 was he really awful? I had to watch the game with one eye on the television and the other everywhere else trying to get my house straightened out (brother coming in from Houston, for the weekend) I DVRd the game just so I would be able to watch what I missed.
Hunter Wendlestadt is not his daddy, as far as umpiring goes.
Duensing is pretty much an Andy Pettitte clone of 10-12 years ago.
It’s pretty funny that Wendstedt must have given Pavano a dozen questionable strikes outside to the lefties and all the talk after the game will be the one he missed inside to Berkman, the same pitch he missed a bunch of other times on both Yankees and Twins batters.
Gardenhire just confirmed, basically, in his press conference that he got run intentionally to keep his guys in the game. He’s a really good manager and truly gets the most out of his team.
I cannot get the postgame out here in LA on directTV because the system thinks it is the net game.
man the whining on the baseball network and espn over the berkman ab is staggering. The miscall last night would have been a small issue to these yankee haters if they lost.
berkman was up with no outs, the ump missed the pitch which was on the paint. wow wow.
pettitte thru many many pitches that were strikes called balls and vice a versa..
mitch williams is a mega yankee hater with magrane right behind him.
grandy is on fire………..
Fun fact: the Twins are 0-10 with RISP this series.
The Yankees: 7-21.
Yoo Hoo …Ruby Tuesday …come out, come out wherever you are …
Actually I like Ruby’s predictions …it’s usually always the reverse of whatever he/she says…
Andy was amazing …I think he didn’t pitch well the last two games to lull the Twins into a false sense of security. Good thinking Andy !!!
Mo …Oh I just LOVE MO !!!
Nice to see the whole team chipping in for the first two games ….a real TEAM effort.
I’ll be there Saturday night …I am hoping I get to see the Division clincher ….
Go Yankees 2010 !!!

“Now it’s hughes turn. A great experience for him pitching as a starter for the first time in the postseason.”
Houston, we have our rotation.
I am going to update the chart and will post it when I’m finished. I bit the dust with the Rays today, at least in terms of them winning in 4! I have a feeling a few people are going to zero out in terms of game spread.
Be back.
What a difference one week makes. In the last days of the regular season it looked like the Yankees couldn’t be anyone. Now they look like a well-oiled machine ready to knock down any opponent. The late season acquisitions of Wood and Berkman have really paid off. It is a good moment for Yankee fans.
couldn’t beat (sorry for that)
17 of 43, that’s nearly 50%
And that doesnt even mention missed strike calls that he called balls.
Horrible.
Ive come to learn that anybody named Hunter is a dirtpile.
I think its funny to see Ruby hide at some point and not return – until the next game he tries to jinx for us!
and Burgess Merideth
Joe Girardi was really acrticulate in that interview and answered some dicey questions very well.
Trisha – Haha! Have fun this weekend. Yes, it was THAT bad. It got so bad, I keeled over on a pillow in between one of the earlier innings with extreme chest pain thinking that I was having a heart attack!!!
And before I go, KUDOS TO JOE GIRARDI. GREAT MANAGING SO FAR!
I am happy with all of his moves. JMO but it’s all about O’s here anyway!
He he he.
GO BRAVES! Okay, now to the chart.
I’m very impressed with the apparent dismissal of the trolls, thank you Chad, Sam and the rest of the staff.
I went with what I wanted to happen in Trisha’s predictions chart except for the Rays-Texas series where I called a sweep by Texas. Regretted it later that day.
I have a conflict of interest now, because I want that series to go 5. Quite a predicament
The ball thrown to Berkman was called a ball quite a few times. That part of the plate was consistent. It was the other side that seemed to stretch out. IMHO at least.

Touche. That was fun, harmless tv back then. Danny DeVito just didn’t quite make it as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot.
Driving back from work, tonight, I heard John Sterling call the Berkman home run, and was so shocked I nearly missed a curve…….up here 880 comes in only at night, and with lots of interference from an Hispanic music station, but you just HAVE to listen!
Congratulations to the WHOLE team!
Great thing about this win, aside from taking both games at their house, is that numerous Yankees came up with great plays and timely hits.
That was a GREAT pivot by Jeter on the 1-6-3 DP.
Gardner once again proves that speed kills.
Granderson and Berkman carrying the Yankees offense in this game.
Wood pitching a dominant 8th in getting the ball to Mo.
And finally … Andy Pettitte!!!
How do you know they’ve been dismissed? Trolls have lives, too.
Trish- All I can do is say I will try. I promised myself I would noy get nuts till August and there were games in April that upset me. I will try because it is not healthy for me or the people around me that I care for.
I guess my old eyes haven’t failed me Pat! lol
That’s 40% and that’s embarrassing. It really is.
MLB should be ashamed of itself to have guys this poor working the post-season.
Tom if I had only known.

Figures that he would keep it for himself instead of sharing it with his best internet friend.
Wow if we can score some of those stranded runners we are going to be looking at #28 baby. Andy P was huge. how many times? I love it.
Uncle Ellsworth – Antarctica? Really? Did you really follow Shackleton’s path on land/ice also? Very, very impressive.
I saw the Gardenhire interview, also. He is one of my favorite managers. He seems like a real gentleman, and someone who gets the most out of his team, despite the Twins’ issues with payroll, and losing Morneau and Nathan this season. A really good baseball man. I hope they appreciate him in Minneapolis.
M,
No they don’t. That’s why they are trolls.
Swish is funny
LOL Swish – Texas two-step
Would all of you rather have me around or the trolls? Dont answer!
GB…Duensing is going to be tough tomorrow, Yanks need to show some patience…..Glad you’re doing well my old buddy…….Tricia, that line for the series is over is gaining some length right about now……..A reduce sense of pressure should follow Young Master Hughes when he takes the hill Saturday….Just don’t let Thome beat you Phil….

How do you know they’ve been dismissed? Trolls have lives, too.
——————————–
m, that is the funniest post of the year
Good for Swish – he said that going to NY up 2-0 means nothing right now.
SJ,
But I was informed otherwise.
By the way, Theo Epstein was whining the other day about how the red sox couldnt afford to take on the rest of Wood’s Salary.
But they could splurge half a billion on Liverpool.
Joe I was kidding.
But I might start a tour – that would be cool
Pat M, Duensing can be as tough as he wants tomorrow, the game is the day after
It appears that it doesn’t matter whether the Twins are playing in the Homer Dome or Tragic Field, they still can’t halt the Yankee Express.
BTW, Granderson, Berkman, and Wood, all big contributors tomight and all key Cashman moves. I tip my hat to him tonight. He catches more grief than he deserves from the chicken Little Brigade.
Yeah, the Yanks have really suffered from lack of home field advantage. Just look at how well Tampa has done with it.
So for those ticked off at no Matsui or Damon, how about a little love for Cash and his acquisitions of Wood and Berkman?
Tampa is full of a bunch of whiners. It’s not just their manager.
Anyone see Michael Young’s homerun after it was ruled he didn’t swing through for the final strike?
Stuff like that happens in baseball all the time. DEAL WITH IT.
Love Andy’s Hip Hip Jorge T-shirt!
I love that andy keeps wearing this hip hip jorge shirt.
Well it appears I didn’t screw up yet. I thought I had picked the Rays in 4 but I picked them in 5.
Feel free to check for mistakes.
http://members.cox.net/lsdorga.....SERIES.pdf
I said before the playoffs that the Yankees don’t care about the road. When they are playing well, it makes absolutely no difference where they play – they don’t get intimidated.
hah. That is pretty funny Andy has a Hip Hip Jorge shirt on.
I really feel bad for all the Girardi haters. They’ve had to go 2 nights in a row without screaming that he should go to Chicago, blah, blah, blah.
Liquor may be quicker, but Andy is dandy
I love Andy!! Hip Hip!!!
when the Yankees didn’t sign Matsui and/or Damon I figured they would just go with what they had until the trade deadline and pick up a player or two. Getting Wood has been a revelation and Berkman, now that he has acclimated to the AL has been almost as good, just great moves by Cashman.
I’ve always liked the Berkman trade — even when he was struggling (not so with Kearns). Wood is flat-out superb.
And yes, Cashman gets some credit there.
Jeez when you hear Andy talking about needing to keep your emotions in check and having that “tunnel vision” it makes me realize how big a challenge our boy Phil has in front of him.
The Cashman bashers are pretty silent tonight too.
Pat M. October 7th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
———————————————————————————————————————-
Exactly, Pat. Duensing is a damned fine, young pitcher. That’s why I think that he’s an Andy Pettitte from 10 years ago. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be that kind of good. Wouldn’t mind seeing him in Yankee Pinstripes soon. Love left handed pitchers and left handed hitters in YS.
I love when players refer to the good lord. But I’m a good lord person, so I love that stuff.
Pat M – WE HAVE THIS SERIES!
I’m out of market, but I still have YES Network – but only in standard definition. Watching this makes me really appreciate HD.
Wood and Berkman have both paid their dues……Poor Kerry was deprived of the career he was supposed to have, but he’s got a great attitude and I’m so happy for him that he’s found new life.
Berkman – he just wanted a chance to play meaningful games again and to do it with his best friend? Nothing better.
“Jeez when you hear Andy talking about needing to keep your emotions in check and having that “tunnel vision” it makes me realize how big a challenge our boy Phil has in front of him.”
Phil was born mature. He just doesn’t seem rattleable.
I think he is going to be solid on Saturday.
I think you can bank that.
Tomorrow will be a nice relaxing day……………always love those.
I have to say that with the mustache Carl Pavano looks remarkably like Snidely Whiplash from the Dudley Do Right cartoons originally seen on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show
Berkman is kinda of guy Cash likes , a high OBP guy with power… I have always been a fan of him from a distance.
He has always been a better hitter from his left side than right side… I am curious to see if Berkman is going to ditch hitting right handed period . Also , if NY makes any overtures to sign him in the off season.
I wanna see KW postgame interview.
So much for HFA.
We do not know for sure if Cash and Girardi gave up division and rested players, but if they did, based on the results so far you can not fault them. Who knows what would have happened if we were to face Ranagers in a short series. Look at what is happening to Rays whose pitching was in better shape than ours going into the playoffs. Of course, Pettitte changed that today.
Phil is a very mature kid, but this is the biggest game he’s ever been in. He must be going through all kinds of emotions. Adrenaline can be a good thing, if he can channel it correctly. I’m nervous and excited for him at the same time.
LGY, I too went with my heart on the chart, except for the Yanks. I knew we’d win.
I’m thinking all the rest will come back to bite me!
Some quick thoughts;
- tremendous effort by Andy who had to prove all night long he could answer all the questions John Smoltz had of him…
- Granderson is making a lot of folks look small, he has really come on the last month ( I was one of the doubters)
- What can you say about Berkman, professional hitter making his mark
-awful, embarassing job by the HP umpire,, bush league, and cowardly by Selig not to demand accountability
Hats off to Pat M for sticking with Granderson throughout…
The real surprise with the Twins is how listless Mauer looks at the plate. 2 soft non-productive singles in nine at bats, yet, nobody is saying a word. Imagine if that was Posada.
SJ,
Agree. I’d like to add, after tonight’s game and I’m sure many more that will be like it, I’d be surprised if the umpire union didn’t try to get the tv stations to stop with the strike zone boxes. If they are accurate, they really showed tonight’s ump had some problems with pitched outside to lefty batters.
It sort of reminds me of when the stadiums started having the big screens as scoreboards and would replay missed calls by the umps, to the booing of the home fans (they always showed bad calls against the home teams).
That was stopped soon after.
Now, granted, inciting the crowd inside the stadium is worse than showing up the umps on tv, but so many people see these bad calls, pitch after pitch, I’d think the umps would take a stand against it if they could.
LOL
FrankiePiliere
.Seems TBS believes every time the Twins get out of an inning they have the “momentum
Betsy, somehow I think Phil will going through less emotions than you will before his start.
GB….I’m with you on Duensing, he’s one of the better pitcher with a nice future that not many know about…….He’s had some set backs injury wise…..MG, Well I had Game 3 partially correct…Hughes throwing Sturday, but Duensing tossing tomorrow……Swing and miss yet again…
Looking at the plot of strikes/balls, its disturbing to see so many off the plate strikes, but what I find even worse is the balls called that were over the plate, including a couple right near the middle of the zone.
I can somewhat understand the outside pitches being called wrong, but how do you call a ball right in the middle of the zone a ball?
I want to give a serious shout out to Chad especially. We all know how acrimonious this forum can get and how troll laden, but he has managed to quietly take care of any concerns we have brought to him. And he hasn’t been obstrusive here in the least, in the process. He hasn’t tried to play king of the hill, though he could because this is his hill here!
THANK YOU CHAD! YOU ARE THE BEST. (And I count all of your great journalistic work here as part of that)
Jeers,
That’s where experience comes in. Andy has it and Phil is acquiring it.
I think Phil will be ok. They just need to lay off Duesning’s changeups out of the zone and run up his pitch count.
Get fastballs to hit and make him pay for it.
A lot of talk about the Berkman strike that was called a ball. But not a lot of talk about the pitch before it, which was outside and called a strike.
The moment the umpire called the 1-2 pitch a ball, I thought he was correcting his mistake from the last pitch.
Not having Morneau really hurts the Twins ballclub…..Later
Pat M. October 7th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
———————–
Pat M., if you want the game tomorrow I’m fine with that. Duensing seems to have really come on in the second half, he was out of the rotation until August, right?
I too agree about Duensing. He’s a solid pitcher.
Poor Gardy. I do feel bad for teams that don’t win (except the Sux)
Cash, I think you’re right, lol.
Javy was incredible for the Braves last year. Derek Lowe was bad.
The Braves wanted to unload Lowe and his salary this offseason, but couldn’t. So to cut some salary they traded Javy instead.
Javy was awful this year and Derek Lowe is pitching Game 1 of the NLDS.
Baseball can be cruel sometimes
if the Mets had any brains they would throw a ton of money at Gardenhire to come over and manage, he might just decide to come home, you never know…
Gardy shut the nosey media right down! He wouldnt talk about Wendelstadt (sp?) Good for him.
All Hughes has to do in his start is pitch no worse than Sabathia pitched last night and the chances of NYY winning are pretty good. Just keep Thome, Mauer and Kubel in the park.
I was listening to the Rays/Rangers game on XM, the feed was Tampon’s radio. To hear those guys calling the game was a disgrace.
I don’t have any problem with a radio announcer who is a homer, but there should be SOME professionalism brought in to their announcing. Hearing that makes me re-evaluate Sterling. The way they were talking was as if the Rays never went through cold bat periods this season, and that their playing and pitching was uncharacteristic of them this whole season… WHAT? Didn’t they ever watch the games?
Gardenhire really does not like to push his starters, huh?
Duensing is another guy with basically a 100 pitch count limit.
I hope Phil continues to use his change; it worked for him late in the season, so he should have confidence in it. I’m really not afraid of him pitching at YS – if he makes good pitches, he’ll be ok.
He doesn’t have to dominate; he just has to keep the team in the game. You can’t ask anything more from a 24 year old, particuarly one at the end of a long, grueling year.
Trisha, don’t give too much credit to Gardenhire, if he said anything about the umpires it would be a fine for him.
There is no excuse for a manager being tossed in the post season. None.
Congratulations Yankees!!
Also, congrats to whoever it was that said Granderson and Berkman would be big in the PS. I hope they continue and others keep contributing as well.
Does anyone know the history between Gardenhire and the umpire?
I have to wonder if Mauer is hurting more than usual. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is.
Really happy that they have been hitting on the road, I know they have still been leaving guys on base but they’ve been able to score enough that it doesn’t matter. HFA? We don’t need no stinking HFA!!
SJ44October 7th, 2010 at 9:24 pmYou know I’m not much into conspiracy theories but……..
—
I noticed that also. Then it came back a little later. I was imagining some arguing going on in some back rooms.
If Wendelstedt’s strike zone wasn’t so wide to the outside, Pavano would have been really rocked. He got so many calls 3-6″ off the plate. The commentary about that one pinch to Berkman that just barely nicked the inside corner was ridiculous after all the previous miscalls.
Anyway, 2 down, 9 to go!
Did the national media see this game tonight….can we please stop talking about the Yankee rotation after CC. Pettite has now won 19 playoff games and is just money in the bank in big games. From the 2nd inning on (aside from an unlikely HR to Orlando Hudson) he was just dominant. Can’t say enough about him…as I said earlier today, nobody I trust more with a lead than Andy Pettite.
Great win for the Yankees. Big hits from Berkman and another outstanding game from Granderson….the score could have been worse had Pavano not received 4-5 inches on the outside part of the plate….the Yankees hit a lot of balls hard off him.
Also, Kerry Wood was just filthy. He stuff is back in a big way….95 mph riding fastball, a plus cutter, and that famous hammer of his. Man he looked solid. And of course Rivera was the GOAT as usual.
Beautiful.
Wood has good chemistry with Girardi given their past history.
If Girardi stays with Yanks then I believe Wood will be very inclined to stay with Yanks.
Obviouly, money will be an issue.
But when Yanks paid $6mil/year to Steve Karsey, they will pay woods too in that range for two or three years. Wood is only 33 years old and 2 or 3 year contract is not outrageous. Given how Girardi uses his BP and takes care of them, there should not be much concern about Wood getting hurt.
Javy was awful this year and Derek Lowe is pitching Game 1 of the NLDS.
——————————
Derek owns career era of 3.33 in the playoff in 83 inning pitched , not too shabby.
Javy owns ignominy in the playoff.
These guys are better prepared that any Joe Torre team of the last decade. I’ve abused Joe G like the rest of you, but I’ve got to give him his props here.
There still are a lot of games to play, but I like the way they’re playing. Just get the darn runners in from third with less than 2 outs, and there’s really nothing to complain about.
Trisha -
WAsn’t Gardenhire great at his press conference?
Impressive man.
Kerry will get closer $$, but from mediocre teams. He can close some next year as the Yanks will need to protect Mo again………..I hope he’ll accept what will be a fair offer from the Yanks
tremendous
blake,
Are you cheering on the Braves?
Betsy , I think Hughes will do well. Obviously , it’s no easy task to face Mauer and Thomes with the short porch in the right .
Cash, no it’s not, but it’s a challenge – this sport isn’t supposed to be easy.
BBFan, another reason for the Yankees to try and keep Wood with a multi-year is the great Mariano already being long in the tooth. Wood can be the occasional closer, which can help keep Mo fresh and at full sttength..
I like how different guys are contributing each night. This would seem to indicate that the Yankkes are about to finally click, and fire on all cylinders. I think Hughes will be fine on Sat., all he has to do is keep the team in it. Which, he has been able to do most of the time this year.
Gardenhire reminds me of Lou Brown from “Major League” the last two days.
“Someday we’ll figure out how to beat those guys”
Lou was talking about the Yankees as well.
Agreed Joe on all counts.
Mauer just doesn’t look like himself out there this series and Gardenhire is one of the top managers in the game.
He’s going to keep that job as long as he wants it.
trisha – true pinstriped blue

And before I go, KUDOS TO JOE GIRARDI. GREAT MANAGING SO FAR! I am happy with all of his moves. JMO but it’s all about O’s here anyway! He he he.
***********************
Great managing? Pettitte goes seven, Wood in the 8th and Mariano in the 9th. Golson a defensive substitution for Swisher in the 9th. Wow! How did Girardi do it?
Even in those dynasty years , I remember Thomes and Manny Ramirez killing us in Cleveland uniforms. Come to think of it, Thome really went under the radar in the era of roid controversies.
He is a hall of famer IMO.
PittsburghYankeeFan – (I used to live in Pittsburgh, myself) –
I think these teams have more talented rosters, especially pitching-wise, than the later Torre teams. However, I agree that Girardi does his part in game preparation better than Torre. Same goes in seeing the bigger picture.
One of the complaints about Torre was that he more and more left the team to run on automatic pilot, spending more and more of his time reading racing forms and being a celebrity. He seemed to enjoy being “manager of the Yankees”, rather than actually managing the Yankees.
Oh, well, enough about the past. Let’s enjoy the present.
That should read Yankees. Darn you GB7 and your typing class.
Oh be quiet Michael Kay
Wang Taiwan-
After seeing the Rays get handed their lunch today now you can see why I dislike Maddon. I told you the guy was a 1st class whiner. You saw it on that Young at bat. Like no one else has ever been cheated or given a bad call. Have some dignity Man.
He sure proved it. I was laughing my a** when he was ejected.
Bye bye Rays. Exactly as it should be for a franchise that can’t even fill a stadium with a first place team.
“LGY – disagree. Just a wild guess, but I don’t think Pavano spends any time thinking about his failures.”
——————————-
HA. You’re probably right about that Joe.
Hughes also pitched in 2007 playoffs.
LGY,
GO BRAVES!
Adios Rays.
Adios Twinkies.
Now on to bigger and better things.
Texas looks very, very good. Michael Young is a great player.
Hi GF – Just about to go to bed, just wanted to say hi, hope you’re well, and enjoying the playoffs as much as I am.
“See you” all tomorrow. ‘Night.
Go Giants ! Will Clark was one of my first baseball heroes , he was pretty intense!
Pavano’s nose snarl is almost as cool as Andy’s under the bill glare…..ok maybe not.
MTU,
Pettite = cash money in the bank.
Gardenhire is a very good manager. Losing Joe Nathan before the year and Morneau for almost half the year and still winning that division and almost having the best record in baseball is phenomenal. I’d like to see how the Twins would have done against the Rays. I bet they would have won the series. They just have a mental block and can’t take the Yanks…
Doing well, Joe. Thanks for asking.
At least this postseason I get to watch our beloved Yankees from my own couch instead of a hospital bed like last October.
My only regret from tonight is that we didn’t give Mr. Buttocks pull an even bigger beating.
But I’ll settle for handing him the loss.
Seeing him made me want to puke.
Cash made three mid season acquistions.
All of them contributed one way or the other.
Wood was the most impressive.
Berkman did OK in the regular season, but he is instrumental in winning this game. Hopefully he will continue this good play for the rest of the playoffs.
Kearns struggled going into playoffs. Still, at one time he was hot and contributed to winning some games in the regular season. Some were talking about re-signing him.
I’m sorry, I’m not going to chalk this up to the Twins having a mental block. The Yankees have outplayed them, period.
Thome has like 550 homeruns doesnt he? He is a sure fire hall of famer.
Blake-
Andy is just plain nails when it comes to big games.
Especially PS ones.
We are extremely lucky he wears the Pinstripes.
Our PS rotation is looking stronger by the moment.
The pitch trax didnt appear to be very accurate anyways. I’m glad that YES doesn’t have the box showing strikes like other broadcasters ( like NESN) does. For one, it doesn’t accurately adjust the strike zone to the height of the batter.
In any case, I do miss having the pitch counts shown. We’ve become used to it and pitch counts are now a very relevant discussion during the course of a game. That was especially true with CC last night, given the plan is to next pitch him on 3 days rest.
The Yanks have outplayed them but I firmly believe that the Twins come into these games expecting things to go wrong… The combination of the Yanks being the superior team and that attitude have directly resulted in a 2-0 deficit.
I think Thome has 589 home runs.
Tyler, we’ll have to agree to disagree. I think saying the Twins have a mental block is taking the easy way out.
KPB October 7th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
I think Thome has 589 home runs.
————-
Ah thanks for the help! In that case he is even more of a sure fire Hall of Famer lol.
Blake-
And one more thing.
Granderson looks pretty good for a guy who was rescued from being thrown under a bus doesn’t he ?
Attention civil servants, Jose Conseco is seeking the services of a “pro bono” attorney.
The former MLB Slugger is soliciting legal help after being evicted from his rented Los Angeles home.
According to TMZ, Canseco missed two months payment on his rent. According to Canseco, he’s missing his chandeliers.
You can’t make this stuff up….
Oh, I absolutely think the Yanks are the better team and have been for a long time. The Twins just aren’t built for the playoffs. Their staff doesn’t hold up and their team usually is injury prone and banged up by this time of year. The Yanks are a much better team but the Twins don’t help themselves in these games..
I think the Twins may have some sort of mental thing with the Yankees but the Yanks are a better team in every facet of the game when they play the way they are capable. They have played pretty well the first two games and therefore have won.
Another pretty solid game from Gardner today as well…
SI_JonHeyman
cashman looking very smart tonite: berkman, wood and granderson
At least one mediot has owned up LOL
Watch this.
It’ll make you laugh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugdullaEuJc
Drive 4-6 -
I agree. I very much missed the pitch counts being up there. The pitch boxes are just aggravating.
Notice how the Twins have not been stealing a ton of bases off us? First of all, they are really not a big running team….and most important, good pitching limits the number of base runners to begin with….I know I am concerned about the opponent tuning amok on Jorge, but so far so good..
Watching all the games, the Phillies look like they won’t be stopped in the NL…. I like the Giants rotation but the Phils will put up enough runs against them to win that series easily. There is such a huge difference between the Phillies and the rest of that league. Only way the Phils fall is if they suffer a little hangover after Halladay’s no-no. But still they make it into the WS easily and will have a great series against the Yanks or Rangers likely..
Tyler, you think Sammy Sosa will get vote into the HOF , or will he fall by the Maguire’s wasteland …
500 HR used to be the banchmark for HOF sluggers , I am not sure that’s the case anymore with the steroid era hitters.
MTU,
yea, good thing they didn’t trade him off huh
….he is totally locked in and is playing great baseball. Just hitting lasers.
There might be a slight mental block going on with the Twins when they face the Yanks but the Yanks just have a better team anyways, especially with Morneau and Nathan out.
It’s nice to have Gardner in left…Damon was an adventure to say the least, plus zero arm
Tyler maybe not, but this kind of thing is impossible to quantify. I honestly don’t think the Twins are going to the plate expecting to fail or taking the field expecting their pitcher to get lit up. Maybe subconsciously they wonder if they can beat the Yankees, but I don’t know………..I think the media makes too much of this, to be honest.
Petitte looked like his old self and beating Pavano is sweet!!
Joe from LI: where in the Burgh? Pens lost tonight in the first game in Consol Energy, 3-2 to the Flyers…
I agree there’s more pitching talent now than the Joe T teams, and I also agree that he managed more on autopilot in his later years, concentrating on being a celebrity. A bit more attention to detail, and perhaps he’d have had one more WS win under his belt.
The guys tonight appeared very relaxed in the post game interviews. Winning helps a lot, but the guys seem calmer than in previous years. I have to go back to think how the Yankees felt in 2000 after their last atrocious September.
blake-
That’s the point that I’m trying to make. There is no doubt that the Yanks are the better team in every facet of the game especially with Morneau out of their lineup. But I also think the Twins just expect bad things to happen. When they take a 1-0 early lead I bet you that nobody in that dugout thinks they are going to keep that lead the rest of the game. On the other hand, when Berkman gave the Yanks the lead on 2 different occasions I bet everybody in that Yankee dugout was confident they had it.
The Yanks make the big play. I can’t remember in all of the years of Twins-Yanks series a Twin making a truly spectacular game saving play sans maybe a Hunter catch with Johan on the mound…
Blake-
You think he’s good now ?
Just wait till Long puts the finishing touches on this off season.
Sherman had an article this morning on Granderson; I’ve been wondering when I was going to see it.
Fans wanted Grandy gone, but I never believed the Yankees would have even considered it……….meaning in the off-season. They didn’t trade for him just to give up on him
Man that Curve that Wood dropped on Hardy was just stupid.
Maybe it’s just that the Yankees are an extremely experienced playoff team. They happen to play the Twins a lot in the post-season and generally the Twins acquit themselves well with close games ( but losses). The Yankees KNOW how to win; they know all the pressures that come with the post-season. As Francesca said today, it’s the same reason why they win on the road and don’t get intimidated. They play in front of crowds all the time and they are expected to win all the time; there’s nothing the Yankees haven’t been through. Plus, I think going through the AL East wars prepares you for the post-season maybe better than winning an easy division.
Tyler,
Can’t argue there.
I’m sorry, I’m not going to chalk this up to the Twins having a mental block. The Yankees have outplayed them, period.
————————————————————
I agree with Betsy here. It is obvious who the better team is
If I’m Cashman I have 3 main goals this winter:
1) Cliff Lee
2) try to talk Pettite into another year.
3) explore if Kerry Wood has to close and if not, is there a way a deal can be reached. He’s just throwing so well right now.
Other than a few details (back up catcher)…I really don’t think they need much else.
Cashmoney-
I don’t think Sosa gets in and I bet he gets even less votes than McGwire did his first time around. His congressional hearing was an embarrassment and his career fell off a cliff (remember him with the O’s? It was terrible…)
Thome is a lock IMO. He’s never been caught or never been suspected to my knowledge of using. 589 is a huge number regardless of his lack of much of a glove and DH status. He seems to still have some left in the tank so 600 is definitely in play. He represents a true slugger in this day and age which will leave a good impression in voters’ minds and he’s a very nice guy to boot. He will be in first ballot. I guess he will go in as an Indian?
Diary of an idiot Mets fan. Mad sour grapes!!! LMAO!!!!!

Great managing? Pettitte goes seven, Wood in the 8th and Mariano in the 9th. Golson a defensive substitution for Swisher in the 9th. Wow! How did Girardi do it?
LOL @ Frankie Piliere!
jacksquat – the commentary was atrocious. For one bleeping time, I would rather have listened to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. They arent even that bad. They’re pitiful and vengeful, but not atrocious!
Another blown call
Pittsburgh Yankee Fan-
Are you into hockey? I’m from St. Louis and a huge Blues fan. We get the Flyers in our season opener on Saturday night. We’ll get a little revenge on them for you guys
Blown call comes back to hurt the Braves
Ridiculous
Braves defense isn’t very good.
Blake, sounds like a plan. I would just try and overwhelm Lee the minute midnight strikes on the 6th day after the WS ends. The Yankees will go all out for him – meaning the players as well.
Tyler – John Davidson! Ohhhhh Baby!
Whether they sign Lee or not I hope Andy comes back….the tank is far from empty.
I agree Tyler I think Thome is one strong country boy. Has Sosa ever tested positive for steroids ? I remember the cork bat stuff… and his exponential power increase when he became a Cub. But I am not sure if he has ever been tested positive.
Andy was unreal after the 2nd inning. I wonder what he and Eiland changed after they went down to look at video inbetween innings. For game 3 Girardi has to bat Posada 6th after Cano. He has had really good patient at bats and just like last year Swish is over anxious and swings at too many bad pitches.
Posey looked out to me, too.
Was listening to Keith Law on the radio today. He’s actually a great listen on the radio. Actually, all the ESPN writers are, including Stark and Neyer.
Anywho, he said the Rangers would not be able to employ the same pitching strategy against the Yankees that they are using against the Rays. Sort of a “here it is, try to hit it” right over the plate stuff. Also called Kevin Long an unsung hero. Turned Cano’s career around and gave him props for his work with Granderson.
He was having the best year of his career……….darn shame about the groin injury.
I have often wondered if the Yanks might not have won another World Series if Andy had not left for three years.
So when exactly did Mitch Williams morph into the Dr. Phil of baseball?
Tyler
I am into hockey. Went to the first preseason game at Consol Energy–a really cool arena. Pens outplayed the Flyers but just couldn’t get the puck in the net–the Flyers have a rookie Russian goalie who looks good.
I kept going back and forth between TBS and Versus tonight…
Blake-
I agree. The tank has plenty left, and Andy said he wanted to empty it before hanging them up.
The Clemens thing may complicate the decision even more.
Braves really miss Prado
I don’t love Law, but I admit he can be sort of funny in his chats.
The best part about sweeping is that it protects CC. He has been a warrior and pitched a ton of innings. I’d to hate to see him have to go through all those starts on short rest for a second straight post season in a row after logging all those innings in the 2009 and 2010 regular seasons.
I want to close this one out and see the Rangers and Rays duke it out for 2 or 3 more games. That could give CC an extra day or two of rest. At this time of year, that’s invaluable. He’d be ready to rock in the ALCS and WS.
I’m hoping Phil can stay away from the long ball, mix his pitches and be aggressive with the Twins. Their lineup is weak especially without Morneau and with Mauer not hitting many HR’s lately.
Joe will have a full bullpen available for Phil’s start with extra rest for Logan, Robertson and Joba.
Posey looked out to me, too.

“I have often wondered if the Yanks might not have won another World Series if Andy had not left for three years.”
I’m guessing yes.
Darn shame about Andy and his groin injury as he was having maybe the best year of his career.
Maybe, but we wouldn’t have Phil………………..
wow. The fabled LOHUD echo in effect here. I had heard of it before but never grasped its intensity.
Jeez Bret, lay off the submit button dude
Andy already said Clemens would have nothing to do with his decision.
MTU,
That would be a real shame. I hope that doesn’t affect his decision or his ability to make a decision.
Phil finished the year strong, in part because he was mixing his pitches. He should continue to do the same now – no different because it’s the post season. He’s come up big for us before, he can do it again. He should not be afraid of YS – just make good pitches.
I’ve often wondered what the best part about sweeping is.
Frankly, it feels like Andy never left………
So Brett was is the best part about sweeping again?
blake
I think he comes back. It all starts with family for Andy. His kids are old enough now to appreciate what their dad is doing. My money is on he’s coming back.
Got to be a fun plane ride back to New York for this great Yankee team. WOOHOO
Tar,
Don’t make me say it again
I bet “4 days in October” never gets made if Andy hadn’t gone to Houston….I know he got hurt that year but it was hitting.
When are the press conferences for game 3? Tomorrow? I can’t imagine the starters talking on Saturday
Bret , I see a glitch in the Matrix!
9 Mo wins!
Combining his regular season and postseason totals, he now has 600 career saves.
Celebrate folks.
I am curious to see how Hughes does on Saturday. Last year he wasn’t good in the play offs and Eiland said it was because he was too nervous and he couldn’t relax. The game is obviously not a most win but it would be nice to see him throw a good game and not get beat by homeruns and walks.
Tar,
I think so too really…If the Yankees win the WS then maybe he rides off into the sunset but who knows. I just think that it would be hard to walk away knowing how well you’ve pitched this year when healthy…but as you say with Andy, a lot has to do with family.
Andy talking on Mlbnetwork.
Well he wasn’t nervous in 2007. I remember Eiland making those comments and wished he hadn’t………..didn’t make Phil look so great.
Cashmoney,
No, just a stuttering problem.
If I remember correctly, I thought Schilling wanted to come to NY in the winter of 2003. The AZ ownership asked for a king’s ransom while practically gave the their co-Ace to Red Sox for free!
That is a clear example of prejudicial treatment against the Yankees in my mind.
How many career wins does Andy have?
Have a good evening.
See you all tomorrow.
Buster Posey is good at this baseball thingie , I am hoping Montero can turn into that kind of caliber of a hitter.
m,
240-138
AZ hated the Yankees for David Wells backing out of a handshake deal with them to return to the Yankees. Schilling did want to be a Yankee, but he also loved Francona when he was on the Phillies and was fine with going to Boston.
Gardenhire was suspended for one game in 2005 after a profanity-laced rant to reporters about Wendelstedt following an ejection against Baltimore.
The two went back and forth again in 2009 after Wendelstedt gave him the hook in a game against the Tigers when Gardenhire wanted a balk call on Armando Galarraga.
“I would challenge (Gardenhire) to sit down and watch the replays,” Wendelstedt said then. “Because he was wrong. … I’m going to invite him to my umpire school. If he wants to learn what a balk is, he can come down in January to umpire school and we’ll teach him.”
Gardenhire’s reply: “If he’ll agree to take the chances over, I’ll go with him.”
In an Associated Press story about scouting reports on umpires that ran earlier this season, this is how one team assessed Wendelstedt: “Inconsistent zone, both in-game and from game-to-game, seemingly losing focus at times by balling pitches over middle and calling strikes on pitches well off plate. Seems to want hitter to put ball in play.”

Huge DP…
The big question for me re: Phil is how is he going to react to having the extra rest.
I think for CC it wasn’t so good, Andy was the opposite, it was just what the Doctor ordered.
It was like LGY posted earlier- CC and Andy kind of switched roles. IMO it was because of how they both reacted to the extra rest.
I can’t make up my mind on how Phil is going to react.
I missed the post game did Girardi or Andy say why he didn’t come out for the 8th inning? Obviously Andy did his job but I was just curious if Andy told Girardi he waas gassed or if Girardi decided he had enough and pulled him..?
AZ wanted to stick it to NY in the worst way Betsy… Brandon Lyon was the center piece in the Schilling trade !!! That was a travesty !
I’ll say it every day if I have to, one more year Andy!!!! Wait I already said it today.
Gardenhire had a point about that pitch to Berkman…it was a strike. However the first strike was 4 inches off the plate so it evened out….as Berkman said after the game, he had been giving strikes outside the whole game and nothing inside.
Cashmoney – LOL! Such is life. I still remember the fetch ARZ brought in for the steroid Schill. Brandon Lyon, Casey Fossum, Michael Goss, Jorge De la Rosa! Garbage, garbage, garbage, and more garbage!
We could not find a radio station today that was carrying the game when we were driving home this afternoon. That’s a pretty sad commentary on the Phoenix area.
CR9-
I like John Davidson alot. St. Louis was a pretty big hockey city up until the lockout. The team was up for sale at that time and basically traded off alot of guys for absolutely nothing. JD and Dave Checketts (who owned the Knicks for a little while) have brought hockey back to the city. Last year was disappointing but this year it is in the hands of the young kids.
Wendelstedt has an umpiring school?
Is it called the School for Umpires Who Can’t See Good?
If so, he needs a refresher course.
Gardenhire had no point, for the reasons you detailed about Berkman’s PA. No point whatsoever. It takes a special kind of arrogance to get angry about that Berkie 1-2 call after everything they received all game!
I dont feel the least bit bad for Gardenhire; we saw the kind of person he was today when he dared argue that call.
Lincecum’s hair looks like one of those mullet hats you can buy.
Phil has not pitched well in the past on long rest, but he did have that one inning in Boston where he obviously was amped up.
If I’m worried about anything, it’s Phil being overly hyped. His command has not been great in the last few weeks and if he can’t get a grip on his emotions, the game could get out of hand for him.
We don’t really know about him as a post-season pitcher as he’s had mixed results. Generally I have a good feeling about him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he struggles.
Cash, I never heard of Brandon Lyon; I think you mean Casey Fossum?
Why did Sux let Lowe go? because they are cheap?
Tyler – John Davidson is an excellent hockey guy. He really understands the game, and I am sure that St. Louis will be competitive in very near future. Since Im a Rangers guy – and JD was our broadcaster for 20+ years – I always hope that the Blues do well for him. A truly classy man that I was never fortunate enough to meet, at least not yet!
Braves will win
I think Hughes keep them in the game and give them a chance to win because he’s done that consistently all season. Hopefully the Yanks can score him some runs at the stadium.
“I missed the post game did Girardi or Andy say why he didn?t come out for the 8th inning? ”
Probably because the last time he threw 85 pitches was July and he had done his job tonight.
Blake,
Thanks. If things had gone perfectly, he could have reached 250 this year!
Maybe he comes back for another round.
Betsy
Brandon Lyon, Casey Fossum, Michael Goss, Jorge De la Rosa
I wouldnt forget that trade if I had dementia! ….which Im certain to get at some point in my life!
I remember during the season the Yanks had a game just like tonight with the ump calling strikes on one side of the plate but not the other. It was CC facing a righty and the ump called pitches way off the right part of the plate for the opposing pitcher and wouldn’t give CC a strike on the left part of the plate. Obviously I don’t remember who the ump was but I wonder if it was Wendelstedt. Gardenhire had nerve to get thrown out over not getting one pitch called when Pavano got at least 15 pitches called strikes that weren’t even close.
CR-
He is a very classy guy. I’ve met him a couple of times as one of my friend’s dad is involved in the Blues ownership group with Checketts.
That group always says all the right things and really has got the city back into the arena and filled the stands. They ran a deal this year when on certain season tickets you only had to pay half the marked price and if they make the playoffs then you pay the other half. Little stuff like that are always nice gestures…
I just hope that it isn’t all talk. A good year for them this year is making the playoffs and maybe winning a round. The Blues have had the best farm system in hockey for 3 out of the past 4 years so the talent is there. Just have to put it together now.
LGY
About a month ago, I gave CR9 the link to Wendlestedt’s school. Told him he should go.
Who would win a Rays/Braves hitting contest….answer nobody.
I believe that move cost Colangelo his job.
Betsy, see CR9′s post above about the details of the trade… I also remember Cashman trading away Tony Armas Jr for an aging and almost done Mike Stanley. Boston then package Armas and Pavano for Pedro Martinez in the follow winter. The Yankee could have also had Pedro Martinez!
I think Hughes will be terrific.
The Yankees roughed up Duensing in game one of last year’s ALDS.
I don’t see anything about him that would lead me to believe it won’t happen again.
If Phil gives them a good old fashioned 6 IP, 3 ER quality start, it should be more than enough to sweep.
Well, frankly, it’s very important that Phil pitch well because if the Yankees are going to go deep in the playoffs they will need him; they can’t survive on CC, Andy and…………..?
Probably because the last time he threw 85 pitches was July and he had done his job tonight.
——
I figured that but I was just curious if they spoke about it.
Rich, if forced to pick one – terrific or bad – I’d go with terrific as well.
G-C, I would take that in a heartbeat.
I can’t believe how people can even cry about the pitch to Berkman in the 7th. After all the calls Hunter gave Pavano all night long. It was one pitch. Get over it Twins people. The locals up here are a bunch of babies. Your team just isnt good enough. Plain and Simple. Not only that but all the Twins fans wanted us, well now they got us. Death, Taxes, and Yankees beating the Twins.
I doubt we would have had Pedro, but in any case, I loved Mike Stanley
Did you guys see this on Twitter (Ledger_Yankees)? Funny stuff on Berkman.
“You know these games are important. I actually saw him in the weight room a couple of days ago. I almost had a heart attack” A-Rod on Lance
Tyler – That’s awesome. Lucky you! Very classy gestures on the part of the Blues, and I would expect nothing less from Davidson and Co. Good luck to the Blues this year! I’ll be pulling for them!
Tar – I already know what Wendlestedt’s school of umpiring teaches. I could teach that class myself; I know them all too well!
The Twins just don’t matchup well against the Yankees. Like the Angels not matching up well against the Red Sox.
I think Hughes will be great. No worries at all. And if we don’t get it done in Game 3, there’s two more chances after that.
What a terrific start to the series.
Wang, lol
“You know these games are important. I actually saw him in the weight room a couple of days ago. I almost had a heart attack” A-Rod on Lance
Apparently, they don’t call him Fat Elvis for nothing.
Lol at Arod’s quote. That is hilarious!
Betsy, we had two highly regarded prospect at the time, I think they were Rafael Medina and Tony Armas Jr, Expos would have take two for Pedro , had Armas not gone to Boston for a 2 month rental of Mike Stanley.
Medina and Ruben Rivera were later sent to SD for the rights of Irabu I believe.
That’s funny…no wonder Puma muscled up tonight.
Cash, even if that’s the case, it’s not something I would ever lose sleep over. Keep in mind that Jim Beatty, the Expos GM, HATED and probably still hates the Yankees. He would not have done us any favors.
It’s pretty great that Andy and Lance, two best buddies, are getting to enjoy this together.
Lincecum looks really good tonight. Great performance.
oh my, Braves are done
It’s all water under the bridge Betsy… but think of this though… The Yankees could have had two of the great RH pitchers in our generation had not chances and simple hatred conspired against us in these two separate cases!
Braves can’t hit.
“About a month ago, I gave CR9 the link to Wendlestedt’s school. Told him he should go.
”
——————————–
CR9 would probably be in his car driving up there right now if the Yankees lost tonight (if they even let this guy have a license
)
Wow Timmy brought the heat tonight. He had some bad starts down the stretch but he is on tonight.
The last two days have proven that you have to have great starting pitching to be successful. Look at all 8 games played. The better starting pitching has been the difference.
Cash, I guess I just don’t look back. I guess it’s interesting for what might have been, but in the end things worked out pretty well.
CC will be much better on short or regular rest; going 8 days without pitching undoubtedly hurt him. There’s just no overstating how important Andy’s start was to us……..tonight and going forward.
Lincecum’s a really good example of why velocity just doesn’t matter that much.
He’s lost at least 3 MPH off his fastball since his rookie year and has remained just as dominant. I don’t think I’ve seen him throw a fastball that’s topped 92 all night.
The key to maintaining his dominance in spite of the lost MPHs, is of course, improved command. That and the fact that he has such unbelievable downward plane in his delivery that probably makes that 91 MPH fastball look like its still at 94.
Michael Dunn in for the Braves.
If the Yankees make it to the World Series I would rather face the Giants because the Phillies with Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamesl with that killer offense is scary.
Not saying the Giants would be easy because they have great pitching but their offense is not that great.
Wasn’t he having a mediocre year up until September?
I admit I’m still stuck on velocity even though I know it’s not the be all and end all.
Hamels
I guess I missed it when Andy was speaking, but apparently he said that Berkman was unhappy with his lack of power and KLong made a slight adjustment.
Seriously, give KLong the keys to the city because he’s a difference-maker.
Good night Yankee people!!!!
Mike Dunn in for the Braves. He looks like the guy from that hit show. The one making meth to pay for his wife’s medical bills.
Seriously, how cooked are the Rays?
Pretty funny:
How Do You Feel About the Yankees? Love, Hate, Don’t Feel strongly either way
http://assets.sbnation.com/ass.....ankees.png
The issue with lost velocity is whether or not it presages an injury or decline, particularly in a young pitcher. That may not be the case with Lincecum, but it’s why it couldn’t be ignored.
GN Erica !
LGY, that’s funny
On my way to NY this weekend. So-weet!!!
Betsy,
CC will be on 8 days rest for the ALCS is the Yanks sweep.
They Yankees have been awesome since Erica started saying good night again. How superstitious can I be.
“On my way to NY this weekend. So-weet!!!”
————————-
Why are you wasting your time coming to NY?
I thought the Yankees were one and done???
LGY, oh………….phooey. I mean I want to sweep badly, but that’s not great for CC. Oh well – I guess there’s nothing that can be done.
What an opposing player thinks of NY……
HaleMark Hudson also had a good line about New York: “You sneeze wrong, you?re on TV. That?s the biggest stage.” #Twins #Yankees #ALDS
Difference in this game was a blown call at 2B that led to a run.
What a joke.
Jeremy October 7th, 2010 at 11:41 pm
Lincecum looks really good tonight. Great performance.
~~~~~~~~~
Call me shallow, but I can’t get over his “9th grader-I’m-a-loser-and-now-I’m-gonna-go-smoke-some-pot-behind-the-lockers-during-class look”. He looks like he weighs 110 pounds. Just an odd creature.
There is no way anyone would peg this guy on the street as a major league baseball player — an elite one at that.
LOL Wang… It’s SF , the entire team looks like they smoke pot !
Night!
night all!
Cashmoney!
Ah…totally forgot we’re talking San Fran.
Just heard Verducci interview Tim after the game…yep, sounded stoned.
Seriously, though, the guy can pitch. Good for him.
Well, the fun is over. Back to work for me. Later, guys.
Umps 1
braves 0
LGY – LOL! One day, one day, Ill get my revenge on ‘em all. Ive got my top 100 hated lists. Tim McClelland will always be top 10 and Ron Gardenhire just moved himself into the top 100 with his classless and arrogant behavior tonight.
So we’re clear, I have a separate list for Bostonians. So McClell and Gardenhire do not reside on the Bostonians list!
I missed something. What did Gardenhire do wrong other than get thrown out of the game?
Totally raw deal for the Braves.
SAS,
Nothing really. After a mound meeting with the Moose-stash, he was making his case to the ump. It got a little heated,but not in the ump’s face at all. They were walking, and the ump had a trigger finger. Y’re outa here!
just bought game 2 tickets for the ALCS!!! The rangers have to win their series now….
m,
I saw that. He did it on purpose to try to get his guys worked up a little. It was a tactic. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t work.
Hope all is well ….well west of me.
SAS,
I heard him admit that. I think umps know what these guys are doing. Sometimes they ask the manager if that’s what he wants. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if an ump refused to toss a manager who wants to get tossed?
SAS – I dont care that he got thrown out, for whatever reason. I simply CANNOT believe that he had the temerity to argue that call to Berkie after all the calls Pavano received and the cheap call previously in the same plate appearance to Berkie. I simply cannot believe it. I found his arguing to be unconscionable.
m,
Yes, a riot.
CR9,
That’s his job. He did it to get thrown out. It was a tactic. He’s a terrific manager and has been for years. As a matter of fact, the Twins are one of my favorite teams. They do a lot with a little. I admire the team.
The Yankees are at a different level of love from all other sports teams to me, including the Giants and Jets.
SAS – Like I said, if Gardenhire wants to get thrown out for a tactic, that’s great and I applaud him for using that tactic.
However, if you ask him if he was upset about the 1-2 pitch to Berkie, he will honestly say that he was angry. And as I stated, he had NO right to be.
“The Yankees are at a different level of love from all other sports teams to me, including the Giants and Jets.”
Does that mean that you love the Yankees more than any other team?
Another missed call, in the Giants game, cost the Braves the only run they gave up. How ’bout that? More carnage left by umpires, with no consequences.
Absolutely. I am a Yankees’ fan first, last and always. I couldn’t care less about hockey or pro basketball anymore. I do like football very much. It is a fun sport. You can have the others. I used to have golf favorites, but they are all Seniors now. Tennis, no good Americans other than Venus and Serena and that doesn’t excite me.
Interest that espn.com aka RedSox Urination is reporting that the players assn is requesting a 3-way meeting between mgmt, umpires, and them to discuss the umpiring situation.
I’m neutral in the Braves-Giants series because I’d love to see Bobby Cox make it to the Series in this his last season, while the Giants were my dad’s lifelong team.
But for a game to come down to a blown call on a sb is just ludicrous. I’m not a fan of teamsd blaming umps when they lose. It’s no small coincidence, imho, that the two managers tossed tomight are BOTH down 2-0 in a 5-game series.
But these umps are blowing basic calls … during the post season … and I’ve just never seen anything like this. I know the benefit of replays makes it easy for all of us to second guess, but still I don’t recall ever seeing so many controversial calls, the way it’s been for the past TWO post seasons.
I thought the best part of sweeping is that it brings us closer to not signing Carl Crawford.
“Andy Pettitte had only his most recent.” Well put Chad…
