    Great lineup. Go Yanks.

And also Go Rays (don’t care who wins that series….just want it to go 5).

It’s so awesome to hear others ‘superstitions!

Jeers – Oh. Well, then, I guess I wont be wasting $$$ on MASH.

My wife gave me a second chance in 2006. One of the requirements with the couples therapist was that I get rid of the Directv Dish on my roof.

Well, I never got rid of the dish, and still kept the NFL & MLB tickets. I decided that was enough of a compromise – getting rid of the NHL & NBA. She obviously didnt, and the marriage didnt last much longer! :)

I wear a Yankee shirt during every game, when I wear a certain one and they win, I have to wear it for the next game. Ill wear the shirt for every game until they lose and then I wash it and put on another. For example, I wore my Teixeira shirt during each game of their 8 game win streak. I got made fun of at work because they had a day game and I wore my Teixeira shirt under my work shirt. I wear my Swisher shirt to all the games I go to because they haven’t lost a game I’ve been to when I’ve worn it.
    ************

Once I establish a “spot,” it’s my permanent place during every Yankee playoff game. My body position, controller placement and cup/glass placement never move.

    Who else is very superstitious!?

I shower to remove “bad baseball yuckiness”

And my Yankee Snoopys have to be on the couch facing the TV to enjoy the game

When Lance Berkman as your #8 hitter is the only hitter you even need to THINK about complaining about ;-) you have a SUPER LINE-UP ! Yankees are going to put it TO THEM, even though they will be fighting for their “lives” ! ;-)

    Cashman needs to go -

    Great post.

Having kids definitely re-arranges your priorities, doesn’t it?

Thinking about it, I’ll bet that my in-laws were married in November for the same reason (though my FIL was a Bklyn Dodgers fan). I’ll have to ask my MIL.

I will say, you’re awfully lucky the fates were with you when you issued your declaration about when the baby should be born. I know from experience, that’s not always something that can be scheduled. (In either direction)

    **********************

Thanks Doreen – and yes kids change the way you look at EVERYTHING – mostly good. I was never a fan of disneyworld until i went with my kids – and now WDW is my favorite place to go – seeing it through their eyes is an experience i can’t explain (until they get tired of it of course) – luckliy we live in miami so we get to go 4 or 5 times a year..

as for the fates of when the children were born – it wasn’t easy….at times it felt more like a punishment then something fun to do…….

Can anyone imagine the pain that Jorge suffers having to squat all the time, and all the shots he takes off various body parts. Without Jorge, we may never have won any of the World Series we won.

  30. jpb173 October 7th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Love that, I went to a tampa yankees game and they were having this never ending inning(the other team scored 10 runs in one inning, even though they brought out 2 different pitchers), it was horrible. This guy sat down a few rows next to me and said he had moved because he thought maybe he was sitting in a bad spot so that’s why nothing was going their way. Finally the brought out Venditte and it all ended. I love that other people are superstitious too.

    RiverAveBlues Hamilton has an impressive 137 career OPS+. Mantle’s lowest full-season OPS+ by age 29 was 143. Career up to 29: 175.

  51. Jim October 7th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I don’t like Swisher in front of Posada. Posada has a track record of getting big hits in big situations in the playoffs, Swish has yet to prove that. Cano is the Yankees best hitter, he needs to be protected by a proven playoff commodity like Posada otherwise he will be walked with an open base until Swisher can prove he can do it on the big stage.

  52. MG October 7th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

CC, the commercial is at the end of the video on the above link…

  53. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

  56. CR9 October 7th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

El Duque – lol, i didnt care for the toronto umpire guys! They were funny at first, though.

I just cant stand this blue shirted guy! He wears basically the same clothing each game.

There’s this one guy directly behind home plate at Red Sox games, he’s there nearly all 81 home games, with a yellow headset on. I hate that guy! He looks like the biggest …

  57. El Duque October 7th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

If we win the series …. Than I want Lee and Proce to pitch in game 5 , so they can only pitch in Game 3 of the ALCS!

  62. Giuseppe Franco October 7th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Josh Hamilton can certainly play ball, but there was only one Mantle.

He might have been the most freakish physical specimen to play baseball in the game’s history and that is not hyperbole.

  76. CR9 October 7th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

I had no problem with the decision by Swish to bunt. I did have a problem, though, with the way he chose to go about bunting. He tried to push it as if he were attempting to possibly reach base on the bunt also. Just square around prior to the pitch, get the bunt down, and move the runners over. That’s if you’re going to bunt to begin with.

  77. -Matt- October 7th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

    That’s really an awesome lineup

    October Jeter
Curtis Granderson, who’s hot right now
    Mark Teixeira
    A-Rod
    Three consecutive switch-hitters
    Gardner

    I mean c’mon
we have Lance Berkman hitting eighth

  78. Erin October 7th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Ledger_Yankees Girardi says he’s in favor of replay so long as it doesn’t add to the length of games.

  79. Cashman needs to go October 7th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

btw – i know this isn’t the time to complain – but how does arod with his hip surgery and calf issues steal a base last night and gardner not only doesn’t steal a base but didn’t even go to 3rd when delmon young bobbled the hit by jeter…..he may be the slowest fast man in baseball….

  80. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes October 7th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

  86. CR9 October 7th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Cashman needs – It’s a shame. Brett probably held up midway between 1st and 2nd on that Jeter single. Rather than getting to 2nd and once the ball fell and bounced away from Young, run to 3rd. He cost us at least a run that inning. Hudson advances from 1st to 3rd on an out, and Brett just stands with cement in his cleats! :)

  87. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

i really wish the yanks would find a way to land cliff lee and adam dunn. Love poasada but it would be nice for him to retire after this season.

Bronx Jeers, people say “LOL” way too much, but when I read your account of being alone in some Boston bar and then finding iut it was an old-man gay bar, I did laugh out loud. Thank you.

Off to La Taqueria now, see ya!

  91. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Tex is a gamer… no way u dh him during the playoffs. Don’t mess with whats working right now.

  92. SJ44 October 7th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

On that play, Gardner had to hold up at second to see if Young caught the ball. That kept him from taking third.

That was a tough read for Gardner.

As far as running, he was having a hard time reading Liriano.

When that happens, the only way he could have run was on first movement.

  93. El Duque October 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

@cashmoney ! Just googled “von schlieffen plan”

  94. CountryClub October 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Posada isn’t retiring with 1 yr left on his deal. Dunn doesnt want to DH full time. With Lee, you’ll probably get your wish.

  95. jackamir October 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Two yrs. ago, I thought BJ Upton was a star in the making. He has really spiraled downward. He is a player that needs a change of scenery.

  96. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

i cant believe the rangers got vlad for next to nothing. Can you imagine if the yanks went after him instead of nick johnson?

  97. El Duque October 7th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Gardner has a though time reading all left handed pitchers. But he will get better! Brett is one of the most important players of the yanks future! He gets better each and every year!

  98. CR9 October 7th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

“On that play, Gardner had to hold up at second to see if Young caught the ball. That kept him from taking third. ”

I agree about it being a tough read. However, couldnt Brett have been at 2nd waiting, and if the ball was caught, scurry back to 1st base.

Also, as to reading Liriano, isnt Brett looking at film every day of the starting pitchers to learn their move? Im sure he is. I know it’s not the same thing as seeing a move live, but his speed is his best asset and he needs to employ it more often.

Two yrs. ago, I thought BJ Upton was a star in the making. He has really spiraled downward. He is a player that needs a change of scenery.

That´s exactly what I was thinking yesterday! Two weeks with Kevin LOng and we have another Cano!

  101. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

justin upton is the real superstar of the upton family.

  102. Carl October 7th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

  107. UnKnown October 7th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

EJ is not a play by play guy. TBS should know that. He is awesome on TNT as a host of there basketball stuff. But really cmon. He didn’t even know the score of the game at times last night.

  115. murphydog October 7th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Ron Darling was very into the game, identified all the strategic situations and what to look for. I thought he did a darn good job.

And leave Flash alone. He’s subtle, not lethargic ;) You already have an over-caffeinated, Great Dane puppy as the main guy on YES. How much breathless baseball announcing, crepe-hanging and manufactured anger can anybody be expected to listen to in one broadcast?

  116. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

man, i wish we would have had these broadcasters for our series. The sad thing is, TBS let chip carray go because he made some mistakes last year during the broadcast. His replacement, none other then ernie johnson. I loved chip carrays excitement… it was great listenin to him when the yanks kept getting late inning heroics from arod. Now, if we make it to the alcs we have to deal with ernie johnson again since tbs has the rights to the ALCS this year.

Tabbert, I only suggested DHing Tex because he is pretty banged up. Of course he’s a gamer and of course he WANTS to be at 1B, but as long as his bats in the lineup and our backup 1B is legit on defense, then why not DH Tex vs. right handed starters like the American Idle.

I especially love it when he sits back after Kay uses a $25 word and then rides Kay about his vocabulary and “that Fordham education.”

It gives a little insight into Flash in his playing days and what kind of presence he was in the locker room. And yes he is well prepared, and doesn’t run on and on like Alois Terry Leiter. Flash and Singleton are exceptional.

Sadly, that was one of Buster’s better moments. And Im not saying these Rays are the 98 Yankees :)

And Buck Martinez is mentioning the JETER HBP play again. A play that didnt have an effect on the playoff seeding in any way. Like that even compares to the Young check swing.

  147. Erin October 7th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

And I’m assuming Kernan meant “pitching” not “pithing” in that tweet. ;)

  148. CountryClub October 7th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Tabbert are you serious? Carray is so bad that a TBS actually listened to the public outrage and got rid of him. Too bad ESPN and Fox don’t do the same. I don’t mean any disrespect if you’re not being sarcastic. if you do truly like him, you’re one of the very few.

Ernie Johnson is catching heat for his calls on Granderson’s triple and Tex’s HR, but if you listen to Sterling’s calls on those same plays, they’re just as bad (and you know he WANTS to be over the top). The announcer’s booth in that place must have real bad views. Because nobody seemed to know what was going on.

BTW, I’m not saying EJ is a good play by play man. I just think he’s getting killed for something that ewasnt his fault last night.

In baseball, anybody can have three good days or three bad days.

It’s why the playoffs are such a crapshoot and why the Yankees-Twins series is FAR from over.

    Doreen,

Jerry Meals is a horrible umpire and he blew the check swing call on Young. It wasn’t close.

Another guy getting a post-season adsorbent based on a rotation system rather than merit.

  154. Captain Clutch October 7th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Bad job by Maddon. He should of brought in a good reliever to try and get out of that inning at 2-0. Instead he brought in his worst reliever. It would be like Girardi bringing in Gaudin or Moseley. Good job by Tampa wasting home field.

  155. upstate kate October 7th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Flash and Kenny are my fav combo as well.
My parents retired to FL and became original Devil Ray fans (tho born and raised in the Bronx, they were Brooklyn Dodger fans). Flash was my Dad’s favorite player when he played for the Rays…I think he saw a bit of himself, hard working NY Irish Catholic boy, in Flash.

I know most people don’t like carray but i just really enjoy his excitement. Yes, i realize he messed up a lot and missed a lot of facts but i listening to ernie johnson was just sad last night. Not saying carray is the best but i do enjoy how he gets so pumped for either team when a run is scored. Ernie johnson’s hr call last night for tex was the worst hr call of all time in my opinion. If i had a choice to listen to any pair of broadcasters tho it would be flash and singleton. In my mind, they are the best two announcers we have and i love listening to them.

  159. tyanksfan36 October 7th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Unless the Rays score 3 runs by the end of the game, that bad call makes no difference in the outcome, they still would have lost, just by a bigger margin. I know morale fits in there somewhere but still.

  166. Captain Clutch October 7th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Garza or Davis should of pitched game 2 for Tampa. Shields has been awful this year and he reminds me of AJ. Either really good or really bad but most of time really bad. One of the announcers was saying that he pitched Shields because he pitches better at home but that is stupid.

  167. Cashman needs to go October 7th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

joe the genius maddon strikes again – puts in chad qualls against michael young (2 for 5 career) and not dan wheeler ( 0-4 with 3k’s) – yes i know small sample size but i think i’d take my chances with the guy that struck him out 3 out of 4 times….

and they said that maddon was the best manager out of the 8 remaining…..maybe the best manager to pick out the teams wardrobe – but actual managing..eh not so sure about that..

    upstate kate:

Bronx born Dodger fans? That’s pretty unusual.

My favorite Flash Pinstriped moment wasn’t his walk off double. Rather it was the game where he walked toward the mound to speak to his pitcher, Randy Johnson, with a sort of “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?” demeanor after a verbal exchange between pitcher and catcher. He was ready to fight the Big Unit. That was the day Flash became one of my favorites.

  174. YankFanCA October 7th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

The Rays just have very little margin for error. If their pitching isn’t dominant, they don’t have enough offense to make up deficits. The Rangers can hit and their pitching is solid. This one probably doesn’t go more than three games.

  175. Cashmoney October 7th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

  180. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

i don’t understand the 7 games series arguement. The rangers have shown nothing but dominance in both games… don’t see 7 games changing that at all. The rangers are clearly the better team.

  188. CountryClub October 7th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

The Yanks and Rays both limped to the finish line. One team hasn’t rebounded and the other took a step in the right direction.

  189. Captain Clutch October 7th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I like today’s lineup with Granderson batting 2nd. When Pavano leaves the game Girardi should pinch hit for Berkman with Thames since Gardenhire will definitely bring in a lefty to face the bottom of the order. I would of started Thames but I know Girardi won’t do that.

  190. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

The one thing i really hate about michael kay is how he says “see ya” when the other team hits a home run. I think “see ya” should only be used on a yankee home run.

  191. upstate kate October 7th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

“i don?t understand the 7 games series arguement. The rangers have shown nothing but dominance in both games? don?t see 7 games changing that at all. The rangers are clearly the better team.”

It’s simple. It’s very easy for a good team to go through a 2-3 bad game stretch. In a 5 game series, that’s lethal. If you play 7 games, they have a chance to make a real series out of it.

  194. CountryClub October 7th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

When an umpire makes bad calls, there are no repercussions. They should be sent to the minors, just like ballplayers who are not getting the job done.

And the postseason umpires should not be rotated. There should be a rating system where the highest rated umpires do the games.

Kay is one of very few announcers that i have heard use his home run call for both home and away teams. Most announcers have their very own for their team and show tons of excitement. Its okay to be bias when your working for your teams network lol. kay is a joke though.

yes, you are right CC, I didn’t mean they seriously argued. I like Leiter when he gets into his teacher mode, like the time he took off his sock and put a ball in it to demonstrate something.

Laura – I already knew that, but it doesnt change the facts :)

I really miss Coney. He grew into a great broadcast partner. Flash is getting there.

I was pulling for Tampa in this series because despite their speed I think they are a much better matchup for the Yanks than Texas in a potential ALCs. After Price their pitching is overated and they can’t hit.

“Look at how he runs his tongue over and around his lips constantly – maybe its a nervous tick but i think it probably has alot to do with many nights running the train….”

    hahahahah, i love it!

Like i said, Washington’s hands have hit the cookie jar many a time.

Unless the Rays score 3 runs by the end of the game, that bad call makes no difference in the outcome, they still would have lost, just by a bigger margin. I know morale fits in there somewhere but still.
    ——————————————————————————————————————–

Fallacy of the predetermined outcome. 1 pitch can change the course of a game/series.

  215. Captain Clutch October 7th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Thames swings for a homerun everytime up but at least you know if the pitcher makes a mistake he will hit one out. Berkman can’t drive the ball at all and is basically a singles hitter at this point. Thames has gotten some big homeruns and hits for this team, Berkman not so much.

  216. DocTodd October 7th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

YankFanCA….Totally agree…you could hear a pin drop on Tex’s shot, the announcers gave me no idea if Grandy’s ball would be caught, and when one Twin hit a bomb to left I thought it was a HR, as the announcers never said Garnder had room and was parked under it..ThevTBS crew should be nicknamed the Flatliners…

  217. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

” and the yankees tie it up” haha… look at the scoreboard ernie… it says 4-3!!!!

  218. Tabbert October 7th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

the rays have no heart : )

  219. Donna L October 7th, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Just imagine how this board would be if the Yankees were generating as little offense as the Rays so far (1 run in 14 innings)!

Does everyone who’s been ripping the Yankees for the last month now think the Rays are inexcusable, gutless, chokers? Garbage? Why not?

  220. Doreen October 7th, 2010 at 4:44 pm

    SJ44 -

If you ask me, the umpires NEVER get the check swing right – I was being kind in my above statement. :)

But my point was, it’s kind of the condition in baseball. It happens to everyone, so complaining is not really allowed.

There was a blatant miss last night, too, on a check swing – I forget which player and I forget which way it went.

    Sometimes it’s going to cost.

But as long as nothing is done about it – and it looks like Selig is not motivated to make umpires better at calling the strike zone, check swing or otherwise – “it is what it is.”

(I did only see the replay of the check-swing, since I was making dinner and just ran in to look at the replay.)

Shouldn’t that be “Why or why not?

So much for getting out of work early today – UGH! Please no traffic… please no traffic…

  223. CR9 October 7th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Donna – The Rays just arent that good.

  224. MG October 7th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I’ll never understand how a team that isn’t hitting all of a sudden becomes ‘gutless’ or ‘garbage’ or ‘chokers’.

I know it’s a difficult concept but if you succeed 30% of the time at the plate you make the Hall of Fame, that means you make an out at least 60% of the time (accounting for walks). The older baseball adage is ‘good pitching always beats good hitting’, and there is no place where that is more evident than in the playoffs where the best pitchers are on the mound, have had time to prepare, and are well rested.

In 1963 the Yankees lost to the Dodgers in 4 straight and scored (I believe) 4 runs in 4 games. It was the same team that had won back to back World Series in ’61 and ’62. Did failing to hit against the Dodgers that year mean they were ‘gutless’, ‘chokers’, or ‘garbage’? I sincerely doubt it, they were just beaten by 3 pitchers (Koufax, Drysdale, Podres) that pitched great baseball.

  225. MG October 7th, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Doreen, there is nothing in the rule book about checked swings, it is completely open to interpretation by the umpires. So, on top of it being really tough to see, there is no standard for comparison to base a decision. I know that makes no sense but it’s just the way it is…

  226. Donna L October 7th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Well, the Rays may not be as good as their record, and they’ve been offense-challenged all year. But don’t forget that according to that lady who called a Tampa sports talk radio show the other day, the only reason Shields started today is that he’s Jewish, and the Rays’ Jewish ownership made it happen. (Never mind, of course, that Shields isn’t even Jewish in the first place, and that if baseball were really controlled by “the Jews,” the Mets would be a whole lot better than they are. Besides, I’m Jewish, and I didn’t get the memo that says we wanted Shields to start.)

  227. MG October 7th, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Donna, Deadspin has a good take on this meshuganah:

A nice lady called a Tampa sports talk radio show and argued that Shields is starting game 2 only because he’s Jewish, and the Rays’ Jewish ownership made it happen. Shields isn’t actually Jewish, but never mind that.

“He’s not a very good pitcher,” said Linda, who thinks that he’s only starting over Matt Garza because “he’s a Jewish person.” That’s a strong accusation. We needed to get the official ZOG response. As one of the Jews who control the media, I spoke to the Jews who control sports (not Selig [Or Bettman or Stern, for that matter.]) Here’s what they had to say.

“Oh please. We may have many tentacles throughout the sports world, but even we’re not making that 2-hour drive through rush hour traffic to the Trop to keep an eye on the Rays. We much prefer the weather in Miami anyway.

As for the Rays’ ‘Jewish ownership’ forcing Joe Maddon’s hand on this, have you seen how much money Sternberg, Silverman and Friedman have been putting into the team the last few years? That’s not our way.

Look, if we wanted our way, we could have it. We created the DH position just so Ron Blomberg would have a job. We fixed Rod Carew up with our wife’s niece — such a nice girl. We brought down Youkilis this year because he forgot to call his mother.

We’re responsible for a lot of horrible things in sports. The BCS? Us. Keeping instant replay out of baseball? All us. The Bears’ o-line? You better believe it.

But trust us when we say we’ve got nothing to do with the Rays’ personnel moves. If we did, Gabe Kapler would be hitting cleanup tomorrow.”

    So there you have it.

  228. DocTodd October 7th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Rays are a bunch of crybabies arguing with umps, like Red Sox do..
