Scenes from last night
Hard to believe any contending team could have been worse than the Yankees in September. They were beat up, their previously reliable rotation stumbled, and they played their worst baseball down the stretch. In October, though, no team advanced to the second round faster.
“It starts with the pitching,” Alex Rodriguez said. “(Games) 1, 2, 3, I think it got progressively better with Sabathia, Pettitte and Phil with the exclamation point. Down the stretch we always talk about that it’s pitching, defense and timely hitting. We had that in three games.”
The end result: A division series sweep and a Yankee Stadium celebration.

On to step 2
JCPD-
Sorry you had to close last night.
Did you get to see any of the game ? A replay ?
MTU and JCPD,
Thanks for the great tributes.
Looking forward to the ALCS tributes
Chad,
Thanks for the great clubhouse pictures.
Chad,
Where’s the picture of YOU from the clubhouse?? Anyone ambush you?
great club house pix
my favorite part of the post game was Dante sitting on his dad’s lap, looking bored
Fran-
I promise you the next 2 will be progressively more spectacular.
MTU -
Thanks for sharing!
I find myself looking forward to seeing the pictures from you and JCPD. Here’s hoping the Yankees continue to play as well as they have, so we can keep seeing the pix!

The burgers came out pretty well. They tasted great, were very filling. We’re a light-eatiing family, so I decided to pass on the fries and used fat-free milk in the shakes (but full-fat ice cream!).
I’m afraid I missed my opportunity to have an authentic In-N-Out burger when we were in Cali this summer.
Chad -
Great snapshots of the celebration!
Doreen-
I love sharing the photos. It’s a joy to know so many people enjoy them almost as much as I do getting there and taking the shots.
It’s a labor of love.
More to come (I hope).
The pleasure is all mine Fran.
——————————————————————–
MTU, no I haven’t seen the game or the replay. It’s back to work here in about 90 minutes. I don’t see an opportunity to watch until Tuesday. I hate when work gets in the way of life.
I promise you the next 2 will be progressively more spectacular
*************************
MTU,
Looking forward to it.
have a great day every one
I have a friend getting married today, and she is hosting a trail run this am, dogs invited too, so we are off!
Doreen,
Apparently the burgers worked
We have a week to plan the ALCS menu. My base good luck food is chicken for the next round.
Watching Phil Hughes cut through the Twinkie lineup like a hot knife through butter I couldn’t help to revisit the Johan Santana dog and poney show, wondering where all those chips they got from the Mets are and wondering if Twins GM Bill Smith enjoyed the game.
Personally I’d like to thank him for last night’s victory.
JCPD-
“I hate when work gets in the way of life.”
Understand.
It’s what Jackson Browne said, “The struggle for the legal tender”.
Your soul is still intact so that’s good.
By the way, I was fascinated by some of your comments in regards to Mormon women. Particularly the Ukranian one.
I’d like to hear more on that some time .
E-mail if you care to.
kate-
10-10-10 a great day to Marry. Have fun and best of luck to the couple.
MTU-
Jackson Browne is one of my favorites. I’ll definitely e-mail you about the Ukrainian woman, she’s a great person. Probably on Tuesday when I’m off work again.
Fran -
It was like we were on full burger attack last night.
So I think I’ll join the chicken brigade and make that the centerpiece of whatever meals I do next week.

You mean did he get the Kim Jones treatment X 10 ?
Hughes was spectacular.
Doreen,
You’re a much more disciplined eater than I am, that’s for sure! I like full-cream, full-butter everything. I exercise and eat smaller amounts to make up the difference.
I wish I liked the fat-free milk, and low-fat stuff on the market, but I don’t.
If I know a great-tasting meal that’s loaded with calories is coming up, I eat like a squirrel for a day or two. I know. It’s probably not healthy. It’s my area of “naughty” in this world.
Can’t wait to hear what you and Fran decide to do for menus next week. I can live vicariously through your posts. Meanwhile, I’ll be having my noodles and rice.
Girardi’s managerial strategy worked. The ALCS could see some changes. Need 8 more wins before hizzona can make firm parade plans.
So I think I’ll join the chicken brigade and make that the centerpiece of whatever meals I do next week.

Doreen,
Great. Now I know the ALCS is won
Looking forward to reading some of your meals. I do the basic grilled chicken but am open to trying some new chicken recipes.
Chad, great pics, thanks!
Phil adjusted his game plan according to the situation and that’s a smart, veteran-like move. Ok, he wanted and intended to throw the change, but he didn’t need to, so why throw it just to throw it? The important thing is that Phil has confidence to throw it; he didn’t need it last night, but he may need it next start or the start after that.
He and Jorge work well together; I wish the media would touch on that, given they had no problem making a big stink about Jorge and AJ.
I was wrong; I didn’t think Phil would dominate. In fact, I thought his dominant days for this year were over. However, I guess Phil had other plans.
Overall, just a fantastic series for the Yankees. Their SP was terrific (well CC wasn’t great, but we know he’ll be ok) and their offense and D were very good. The Twins are a good team, much better than a 3-0 series sweep would indicate, but the Yankees are better. I love how they went for jugular and didn’t allow the Twins to even think they had a chance to come back.
Oscar,
I think the guys probably live to mess up Kim’s hair with those pies and champagne.
I watched an interview with Jorge and Kim teased him at the end with, “See? I kept my promise, Jorge, and only asked you 3 questions!” I think this is their chance to tease her back.
Since Chad’s the new guy on the Lohud beat, I would think he’d get dumped on. Although, the celebration wasn’t that wild. Maybe after the next round…
Here’s a repeat of the update of the chart.
http://members.cox.net/lsdorga.....SERIES.pdf
I just finished watching yesterday’s pregame (awesome interview with the bullpen guys!) and now I am watching the Game 2 postgame. The theme here is when I don’t get to watch something or devote full attention to it, I watch it later. Sometimes a lot later.
Looks Like I’ll have a lot of time to watch last night’s game over again.
I absolutely love Andy’s postgame after he won game 2 and I especially loved him talking about asking the dear lord to calm his nerves before he pitches. That postgame is about the most animated I’ve ever seen Andy.
Busy days today and tomorrow, all family stuff. Seriously, wish I could be watching some of the games, ESPECIALLY Texas-Tampa. I’ll probably get to watch some of the Phils game if it’s on later tonight.
********************
I am grateful for the Yankees
I am grateful for this forum
I am grateful that I won’t be eating hamburger for quite a while
I am grateful that the Yankees clinched first
I don’t know how I feel about them getting so many days off…
Later y’all. Have a great day.
Betsy,
I heard both Andy and Phil giving Jorge props for his game calling. But I haven’t seen it emphasized in the news stories…yet (I’ve only read about 1/2 of them out there.)
If you see sthg, please let us know.
Jorge may not be a great defensive catcher, but he calls a good game!
Oh yeah – that picture of Curtis looks just like Dionne Warwick.
M, I’m sure you’re sleeping, lol, but I saw your post on Eck,. I don’t disagree with him (darn – I hate that I missed his comments about Phil), but I really think Orel was onto something. We’ll never really know, however.
That RAB piece was wonderfully written and expresses just how I think most (or all) Yankee fans feel about Phil.
Joba? Who cares? And I don’t mean that in a bad way………but why the media cared about his use is beyond me. The guy is fairly low on the pecking order and for good reason. H
Hi Trisha,
Recruiting people for the ALCS chicken meals
Oops.
What I was trying to say was that this was about the team winning, not Joba getting a chance to pitch. Why would Joe pitch him last night? You want your best pitchers to put that game away and not give the Twins even a glimmer of hope. As it turned out, Wood was off, but 99% of the time he’s not so Joe was right to go to him. Joba will pitch when appropriate.
Today I am a Tampa Bay Rays fan
I really want that series to go the distance so Cliff Lee has to pitch Game 5 and can’t open the ALCS.
How about we start getting some pictures of the food you ladies keep teasing us with for next round??
No offense MTU, your pics are awesome, I’d just like to get a look at this mouth watering grub I’ve been hearing so much about..
Wang, if I see anything, I will post it.
The Yankees got VERY VERY lucky that Bill Smith got greedy. Hank insisted on Phil being included, but even his patience wore thin as Smith tried to extract more from the Yankees. What a nightmare it would have been to see Phil (CB said this last night) doing this in red pinstripes
I think I may have to watch Phil’s innings again on MLB.com. I typically see all the games on cable TV here, but have MLB.com as a backup. (ESPN International broadcasts the YES telecasts and any national games — not sure how they get the rights from TBS, Fox, YES, etc., but I don’t like to question a good thing.)
Phil’s fastball was sthg else!! Very fun to see so many swings and misses. Revs you up.
Love the photo NYDailyNews has of Phil where he has the GROWL on his face.

Did you notice when she said that Jorge was gone in an instant before she could barely get the words out of her mouth. It was ike I’m not going to even give you a chance at a 4th question. I was hoping that she got nailed so her hair had that wet rat look. No such luck, maybe if we win the ALCS ?
Have a good day gotta hit the road for a couple of hours of work.

I pare off where I can – weeknights is grilled meats and roasted veggies, mostly. But desserts are usually full-fledge real ingredients – real butter, milk, etc. because we don’t have dessert often.
Cheesecake is the only exception- I’ve found that the neufchatel that Philadelphia brand makes and the reduced fat sour cream from Breakstone done hurt the quality of the finished product.
Last night I used real Hellman’s in the thousand island dressing, not the Hellman’s lite, and Haagen Dazs ice cream. So the low-fat milk was the one concession to health over tastebuds!

I’m reading the Minnesota side of the story this morning. They’re obviously pretty disappointed over there.

Indeed!! I hope Phil remains a Yankee for the long-term. Maybe he can become our next Andy in terms of longevity. I think he’s got a great makeup for big games. I also like that Eiland (I think it was Eiland) called him SMART. To me, that means he’ll be coachable and continue to try to improve himself.
I also like that Eiland (I think it was Eiland) called him SMART.

On the postgame show, when Kim was interviewing Phil, Eiland came up behind Phil and doused him with champagne and said “You grew up tonight.”
5 Days, 10 Hours, and 4 Minutes until Game 1 of the ALCS
(Note: I am guessing an 8pm start time until I know an official time)
Doreen,
You just eat smart. I’m not surprised!! Cheesecake is sthg I can’t bear to eat anymore. It just never approaches some I found in New York and it’s always a huge disappointment. If I end up back on the East Coast, I’m going to check out the brand you recommended.
Re the Twins:
I actually got angry at the video TBS shot after the game of the Twins’ players. There was no need to show how disappointed they looked and I even put my hand over my computer screen so I couldn’t see them when the video shifted to their dugout. I respect them and it hurt to see them so destroyed. I don’t feel that way about the 1) Rays and 2) Red Sox. I will feel bad for Texas, though, when we beat them.
as long as the yankees have jeter, rivera, pettitte, and posada playing the old dynasty still goes on.
cano, alex, teixeira, sabathia, etc , as great as they are, are supporting players for these four. these four are the ones who still set the tone for this team when crunch time comes.
an example of this is this observation in today’s boston globe:
“When you watch Jorge Posada catch Andy Pettitte, you realize he’s a lot better than advertised in handling pitchers” -nick cafardo
http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....al/?page=4
the bottom line is these four players do rise to the occasion and they pass on how to do it to the rest of the team.
the torch will be passed, but it’s history watching these four guys play together.when people look back 20-30 years from now they will be looked at the way old timers look at the mantle ,ford, berra, maris years.
Fran,
I didn’t see that, so thanks for posting!! I’m limited to what is posted on the YESNetwork site.
You know, I was just thinking about that trade-that-never-was with the Twins and Hughes.. how many pieces that they got from the Mets were even playing for the Twins this series?? The only one I could even remember being included was Carlos Gomez who the Twins turned into JJ Hardy eventually in another trade.
The Cano pouring champagne on Sabathia picture is a classic! Perfect moment in time!
I can’t help but think that this series victory was exactly as Cash and company drew it up. They could not have written a better script.
It also seems obvious (at least to me) that from about a month ago, the Yankees thought the Twins were the better match-up. I would have to say they were right.
randy l,
loved your post, esp this comment from Cafardo:
“When you watch Jorge Posada catch Andy Pettitte, you realize he’s a lot better than advertised in handling pitchers” -nick cafardo
Betsy — that’s what we were looking for!! Need more Jorge acknowledgement.
BTW, I think that’s exactly why Andy wore his Hip Hip Jorge T-shirt to the post-game press conf.
And I did like Jete’s pep talk about how practice was over. September’s results? SO WHAT? I think his confidences really impacts the other guys. Love the Core 4.
MLB Network just started showing a replay of the Yankees-Twins game from last night…
Tar,
No doubt in my mind they were playing for Minny.
Fran, I saw that – how sweet was that? Eiland has been with Phil for years, so he must have been so proud last night
Thanks to Huuuuuughes, I’m having a piece of tribute cheesecake with a cup of tea for breakfast.
I held out until after the win was recorded but cheesecake at midnight didn’t seem like a good idea.
All the expert analyst Yankee love last night was a little disconcerting so I was happy to hear on the ESPN this morning that CC, Andy and Phil were good this week but can they do it again and can they do it against the Rays/Rangers.
Sad, but Yankee doubting from the mediots makes me more comfortable.
Am I supposed to be eating cheesecake for the Yankees???????
According to Wally Matthews, Eiland said that Jeter gave a ‘rousing’ pregame talk.
Randy, I don’t think I would agree that the other guys you mentioned are merely supporting players, but I absolutely agree with your last comment. I can’t get over how remarkable it is to have so many great players basically play their entire career in pinstripes. Yankee fans truly are fortunate and I personally feel blessed for having been able to live through these years. This will never happen again, to the Yankees or any other team. I’m already saddened by the thought that, sooner or later, these guys are going to retire
MG, that’s great -now you can watch the game yourself!
Betsy,
Don’t be so sure it will never happen again. It may not happen to this extent, but the Yanks biggest payroll advantage is that they get to keep their own stars. 10 yrs from now we may be talking about how blessed we are to have had Cano, Hughes & Montero(ha) for their whole career.
Betsy,
Eiland must be like the proud pop, especially since Phil’s parents didn’t show up
Betsy,
You must feel great about Phil. On top of that, your forecasts for clutch performances from Granderson and Berkman were spot on. Great series for Betsy.
BAD series for Girardi haters and dipsticks who kept pondering how we would EVER be able to find a team “stupid” enough to take Granderson and his “huge” contract in the off season.
Erica – Yeah I think we missed the memo on this cheesecake thing somehow…
Good stuff on Phil; Harper is right – it’s amazing that Phil is only 24, given how much he’s been through. He’s a baby.

Betsy, thanks, they show almost everything including tons of commercials.
I was really tough on Ernie Johnson after game 1, he actually improved significantly the past couple of games. They must have helped him in between games and it’s showing.
Erica and Shame,
We were talking about menus earlier for the ALCS. Doreen mentioned that she had cheesecake last night after her burgers so that’s how cheesecake came in.
Of course I would not be opposed to adding cheesecake as the “official ALCS dessert” to go along with the chicken
Country Club, that’s very true, but to have 2 absolute lock HOFers (and truly 2 of the best to every play at their position, with Mo being THE best) and 2 very nearly HOFers? Cano, Hughes, Montero, etc.. are going to be hard-pressed to top that.
Bret, I do – I would feel better had I not been critical of Phil so much this year. However, I am VERY happy about Granderson; I sort of became protective of him this year when he took it on the chin about 5 minutes after the trade. He’s a good guy and he works hard and he deserves this.
CC, oops – you didn’t say they’d top the core 4. Well, I agree with you. I can’t say that about Montero because he hasn’t done it here yet, but as for Cano and Phil – 100%, absolutely.
MG, I’m going to watch the replay again today -what a great way to spend a Sunday
Missed the game last night as I was at a John Lennon Birthday celebration in NYC. Will watch a replay today.
So proud of Phil Hughes. The game against Boston, which had become a must-win, and now this playoff game. Wow. What can you say. I’m so glad he’s a Yankee.
Oh and JCPD and MTU, thanks again for the great tributes!
Hoping the Tampa-Texas series goes 5.
MG,
I agree with you about the TBS broadcast team. They have gotten much better and I actually think they did a good job. Don’t mind at all thay they will be calling the ALCS.
Fran, I’m game.
I really want this team to win and if I need to take on a few thousand extra calories to make that happen I guess that’s what I’ll have to do.
What the “core four” can offer is perspective – they have been involved in almost every scenario possible, including not making the playoffs in 2008. They have experienced 1998 and 2004. it can’t be overstated how valuable they are even before they take the field.
It will always be in the Yankees’ best interests to have players who become career Yankees. I believe Cano will be in that role in the future, and Hughes. We’ll see who also takes up the mantle in years to come (no pun intended, but I like it). Listening to Robbi in the post-games this season has given me witness to his maturation and I like what I see/hear.
Can’t include Montero since he’s still a twinkle in the eye, but it sure would be nice.
randy l -
Hi – hope you’re well. You’re missed around these parts.
Erica
I made cheesecake with Phil-adelphia Cream Cheese as my food tribute for Phil. That’s where the cheesecake thing came from.
It makes sense to root on the Rays today and force a Game 5 in St. Pete with Cliff Lee on the mound for the Rangers.
The Yankees wouldn’t get to face him until Game 3 of the ALCS provided the Rangers win on Tuesday.
Montero’s name was used as an example of whoever the next young player that will ultimately come up and have success.
Clearly Phil wanted to prove everyone wrong about how awful the SP beyond CC was:
That was the word going around,” Hughes said. “We knew what we had. This was a good formula for us all year. We know we’re capable of throwing the ball well. Obviously, CC carries us but we have some formidable guys behind him.”
Pitching coach Dave Eiland said he saw the spark in Hughes after hearing all the “CC, then who?” talk.
“We liked it,” Eiland said. “We thrive off that kind of stuff. There’s no greater joy than proving people wrong. Everybody in this room knew we were going to pitch well. We struggled down the stretch, sure we did. That’s baseball. That’s part of the game.”
Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports.....z11xxBAE19
CC, I know, but Montero still has to do it up here first; I’m sure he will.
JM, the pleasure’s all mine.
“Phil is only 24, given how much he?s been through. He?s a baby.”
No more “He’s a baby”, please.
The Yankees finally took off the training wheels and he looked much less wobbly without them.
Doreen, agreed.
This team’s experience is invaluable in the playoffs; there is no situation that they haven’t seen before. They are battle-scarred veterans of the wars and they know what has to be done. They may not always get it done – they may lose in the next round for all we know – but they won’t be scared.
Pat,
Didn’t realize it was you with the cheesecake. Thanks for the contribution
Is there an easy recipe somewhere?
good morning, what a clinic the Yanks put up the last three games. No game for 6! days seems forever. I am hoping the rays will take TX to five games and win it.
Well, breakfast is over, the dishes are in the dishwasher and I am finishing my bloody mary. Pancakes for the kids, omelets for me and Mrs Dog, maple bacon all around. I put swiss cheese, diced red onions and diced jalapeno in my omelet! Never have to worry about anyone stealing my omelet.
Me: “Here, try some of my omelet.
My wife: (chewing, sputtering noise) “Oh! What did you put in here?”
Me: “Jalapenos.”
My wife: “Jalapenos?! Are you crazy?”
Me: (maniacal grin).
LETS GO RAYS! MAKE LEE PITCH AGAIN
Pat, sorry, he’s 24 – he’s very young. IMO, that means he’s a baby….everytime I use this word, you start picking nits, and I disagree with you whenever you do. You missed my point or you misinterpreted. If you had read the article, you’d have seen that Harper made the point that I was making – that for all he’s been through, you’d think Phil was older, but he’s still only 24.

MG,

——————————–
Fran, Darling and Smoltz are good together, it was just Johnson who sounded lost in game 1. I don’t know which team will do the ALCS but I’m fine with this one it that’s what it is.
I’m watching the replay now and it’s always interesting to see how a game unfolds. The Yankees were all over Duensing from the 1st inning, it’s no surprise they got him out in the 4th. The other thing is that Thames failed to score a runner from 3rd his first time up, he probably heard it from the blog after that AB and, of course, the next time up he went yard. Baseball is just funny like that…
Cheesecake gets a bad rap as a difficult thing to make, but it’s one of the easier desserts I’ve ever made!
Rich, no it never does…….there’s nothing like winning. I still remember what Buck (I think it was Buck) said, though: The pain of losing is worse than the joy of winning.
MG,
The president of TBS sports was on the radio the other morning and indicated that Johnson, Smolz and Darling are the #1 team so I assume they will call the ALCS. Johnson definitely got better after Game 1.
Yeah Eric I hope they tired each other out . I will satiate my baseball addiction with those three other series in the meanwhile i suppose.
p.s. I have a friend flying in today, you think it be rude if I leave her to her own device and just sit on my couch and watch baseball?
Betsy
I still credit Buck for much of what followed his departure.
btw, Too bad for the Twins that they didn’t face the Yankees from 2005-07; they may have beaten them. Last year restored this team’s confidence. If they win the WS this year, they could win three of the next four.
great line by Darling in the 4th inning after the Hudson DP- ‘it seems like the Yankees are playing games with the Twins, it’s like Lucy pulling the football away every time Charlie Brown tries to kick it’
Sports Illustrated story about Yanks-Twins series with somewhat bizarre “Yankees as coiled serpent” imagery….

Doreen,
Guess I could buy the filling like Tom suggested. Or if you have an easy recipe could you post it or email it to me. Thanks
oops *Erica
Fran, thanks, I’m good with that and probably prefer them to Buck and McCarver (although I’d much rather have Costas and Kitty or just Vin Scully all by his lonesome)
Congratulations to the Phillies for sweeping the Reds !
Congratulations to the Rangers for beating the Rays three games to one !
The more I watch Jorge handle himself in the post season the more I want the Yankees to promote Montero or Romine or whoever is the catcher of the future next season to learn from him while they still can.
Congratulations to the Red Sox for buying a soccer team!
Rich, Buck brought a sense of pride back to the Yankees and I will always be grateful to him for that.
I’m really relieved CC can rest until next Friday. That’s a huge advantage for the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALCS especially if Lee and Price get spent in Game 5 of their ALDS. I’ll take Andy over their Game 2 starter any day. Then it’s back to NY with Phil in Game 3. Things are lining up.
GO RAYS.
G. Love, I agree. One thing I really like about Jorge is the way he sets the target for the pitcher, the glove looks really large when he does. Cervelli keeps the glove at an angle until the pitcher is well into the windup, that’s probably a more modern way of doing it but I really like having the glove set early.
Check that: I’ll take Andy over their Game 3 starter any day since their Game 2 guy would be throwing Game 1 in the ALCS if the ALDS goes 5 games.
Is it too early to talk about a fourth starter? I think the Yanks will need one in the ALCS .
Fran -
I’ll look for one of the recipes I’ve used in the past and e-mail it to you during the week.
Posada maybe the most maligned Yankee great of all-time.
Smoltz- ‘I want to see Robbie Cano face Mo, he might be the only one that can hit him’
So if the Rays/Rangers go 5 games and lose Price/Lee until Game 3 of the ALCS against the Yankees it lines up like this:
CC vs. Rays/Rangers #2
Andy vs. Rays/Rangers #3
Phil vs. Price/Lee in Yankees Stadium

Phil Hughes stayed up late the night before his first career postseason start. He wasn’t out partying — he just didn’t want to sleep, so he tooled around online.
One of his sisters in California noticed that Phil was still on Facebook way after midnight.
“You need to go to bed,” Kim Yubeta, Hughes’ older sister, said in an instant message. “You have a big game [on Saturday.]”
Phil returned the message, explaining that he wanted to stay up late so he could sleep in and have less time to think about his Game 3 ALDS start. They messaged back and forth until Hughes finally went to bed at 2:30 a.m. ET.
Thanks Doreen

That’s funny, because it is the one thing that has always bothered me about Jorge’s catching. He does that little wiggle thing with his glove right as the pitcher is going into his wind-up, which I feel is at times distracting.
I do agree with Cervelli though. I think he sets up way to late.
Bret, I don’t love CC having all this time off – he does better on short rest instead of long – but that said, I take a sweep 100% of the time. I’m sure the big man will be much better next time out.
Tar, I was watching Mauer on the replay and he sets up really late as well, I guess it’s something that has changed in baseball over time. It’s possible it’s a nonfactor for pitchers now but way back when I was pitching (badly) it sure helped me to look at the target all the way through the delivery.

Congratulations to the Red Sox for buying a soccer team!

Betsy,
CC definitely pitches better on regular rest, but getting everyone else a few days off will be beneficial, I think. I didn’t really want CC to have to pitch a game 4 in the ALDS on short rest since it’s likely he will be asked to pitch on short rest in the ALCS, and, if the team advances, potentially in the Series.
And yes, the Yankees are going to need a fourth starter in the next round, right? AJ?? Pray for rain??
Betsy,
I love CC having the extra rest. The whole team will benefit since they were still playing tense, exhausting games down the stretch. They didn’t have the luxury of rest when a lot of the guys were banged up. I think sweeping was so – so key. This is an older team after all and a banged up one.
where is Erica to tell us how long to the first pitch of the ALCS? lol
And the complementary question of course, how long to the first complaint that the Yankees are stale because of the 5 day layoff in between the two series
AJ?? Pray for rain??

Moseley or Nova, all of them will have 2 week worth of layoff. I actually would take Moseley or Nova over AJ at this point, but I think the Yanks will go with AJ. I would love to have Nova replace Mitre on the ALCS roster.
Looks like all the doubters are back on the Hughes band wagon.
MG
I agree with you. I really noticed it with Cervelli a couple of weeks ago. Joba on the mound, I think an 0-2 count, RISP and while Joba is into his wind-up he jumps up and sets a high target.
The problem is the target wasn’t high enough (Joba hit the target), you could see Joba flinch, and coincidentally the batter got a base-hit. For me that was all on the catcher.
Tar, I agree about Cervelli, he either needs to tone it down voluntarily, take some Vallium before games, or the Yankees need another backup catcher.
Cashmoney,
It would be a huge surprise to see Nova on extra rest in Game 4 of the ALCS and WS. I don’t think they trust him. He’s an inconsistent guy.
JM and Bret – the team can definitely use the rest. I do expect it to be AJ in the ALCS……unfortunately.
An interesting topic came up on WFAN last night: do you go CC in 3 games in the ALCS, at least one of which I believe would be on short rest, or do you have him pitch only 2 games on regular rest and let Phil pitch twice? For me, it was an easy choice – Phil twice.
In part because if we can avoid CC on short rest, I think we should. I don’t want to see Phil get the same amount of starts as AJ, lol
Considering the way Phil has pitched in his last two games I’d definitely go with him twice in the ALCS. Anytime you can avoid pitching CC on short rest I think you do it. Of course I guess that could change given what happens in the series but Phil has certainly proven himself in big games at this point.
Bret, my choice is Moseley
I expect mediocrity with Moseley every times out and hoping to get just that. I think the chance of Moseley being mediocre is better than better part of AJ’s bipolar self shows up , if that makes any sense.
in short, I want a starter who may give yanks a fighting chance instead of instant implosion.
Using CC on short rest in the ALCS will depend on the opponent and the series status after the first 2-3 games.
there isn’t much reason to pitch CC on short rest in game 4 unless you are going to pitch both Andy and Phil on short rest as well since it just means that the 4th starter pitches one game. The Yankees aren’t going to do that and you can’t plan for a possible 0-3 scenario coming up to game 4 either. I would just go with AJ in game 4 and have CC, Andy, and Phil lined up for the rest of the way with the option to start CC in a game 7 to be able to have Phil in the bullpen, either as a middle reliever or pitching in the 8th inning.
the MLB replay just showed the Kubel K with 2 runners on in the 6th-Phil just threw a high fastball by a good fastball hitter, that was really impressive.
MG, I think Moseley’s veritable slop would fare better than AJ’s one trick pony fastball against a dead red hitting team like Texas.
Great clubhouse pictures. October baseball is the best baseball!!!
Frankie Piliiere on Phil. Is the cutter something to be concerned about in terms of how it’s changing his arm angle?

Yeah, the implosion factor is low with Moseley…but I think AJ gets the start. I bet Eiland has been taking a real hands-on approach to Burnett in his through sessions throughout this long layoff. They still have plenty of time to get him straight.
Game 4 is Tuesday, October 19th.
Burnett’s last start was September 27th.
If that’s not enough time for AJ to get his head straight and iron out some basic mechanical issues then I don’t know what is.
Chamberlain will get his chances to pitch in the ALCS. Hopefully Burnett doesn’t.
Keep Golson on the roster but make a decision to swap Kearns for Nunez. The right / left combo at DH of Berkman and Thames is working. Don’t tamper with it. Gardner in LF throughout the ALCS.
Love the pics of Robbie pouring champagne on CC and Alex
New Post- Eiland: Hughes is “well on his way”
Cheesecake????? Are you saying that cheesecake has now been added to our chicken as part of the ALCS fare??? What the heck are we going to have to do for the World Series? A 7-course gourmet meal?
I actually liked the simplicity of a basic thing (hamburger for example) and then letting people do what they wanted with that. Heck we won that way last year!
I love the Yankees but don’t necessarily want to weigh 500 pounds when this is over.
I think we should go with a dessert optional. I don’t mind those who want to eat it, eating it, but I don’t think it should have to be part of the winning fare.
That said, you all make the decision and I’ll go along with the crowd. I’ll grumble all the way but I’ll do it.
(Or has the decision already been made and I’ve just wasted my time?)
Off to a Columbus Day Parade.
I’m watching the postgame on YES now. Phil was just incredible last night. Im starting to watch his starts like I watch andy’s ( aka nervous the entire time because i dont want them to fail but filled with a great amount of pride when they do well. I guess i’m a sucker for those homegrown pitchers….)
