Yankees rally to take Game 1
On the verge of a stunning Game 1 loss, the Yankees rallied through a five-run eighth inning to beat the Rangers 6-5 tonight in Arlington. The game ended with a fist pump from Robinson Cano, who homered to put the Yankees on the board and drove in the game-tying run. The game-winner belonged to Marcus Thames, who was the seventh straight Yankee to reach base without recording an out in the eighth.

that game was really reallly nerveracking. glad we won though.
It’s almost not fair having Mo. He’s so disproportionately better than any other relief pitcher in history there’s simply no way the opposition can even try to match the advantage he provides.
The greatest of all time.
UN-believable win
Just wow – my friends all gave up early and left me watching alone – a really shocking comeback. Stealing game 1 in Texas is huge!
They stole this game.
Mo is Mo. Nail biting but he got it done!!!!!!!!!!!! What a comeback.
There is no way that Carl Crawford is $15MM a year better than Brett Gardner.

Great comeback win by the Yanks. And this one has to sting for Texas.
Phil with a chance to put the Yankees up 2-0 tomorrow, and no pressure
Good night all.
I hated the bunt attempt by Swisher.
Props to Moseley, who I didn’t want on the playoff roster.
Sweet win.
Who had faith in Mo?
Raising hand now.
The booth has been in shock along with the Rangers and the crowd since the 8th.
Cano & bullpen co-players of the game.
Unreal….
HAHA
I said it earlier, we had them right where we wanted them.
I also apologize to Jeter for thinking he needed to be dropped to the bottom of the order. He had a great game and really gutted it out.
That was one terrific comeback.
0 Days, 15 Hours, and 59 Minutes until Game 2 of the ALCS
God is a Yankee Fan. We stole that game!!!!
Mo is just the best ever, the pitches to both Young and Hamilton were absolutely filthy and unhittable.

Amazing comeback.
Lets get ‘em Phil…2-0 baby we need it.
This one will go down in post-season history. Moseley was great.
I will give Girardi credit for making all the right bullpen moves tonight.

Yeah I hated the Swisher bunt as well. I’m not a fan when you have a power hitter trying to give up an out. You have 3 chances for a run, don’t let the pitcher off the hook by giving him an out after a leadoff 2B.
Fine you wanna give Swisher 1 shot, he fouled it off. After that he should have swung away. Usually these things come back to bite you in the rear. Thankfully it didn’t.
Got beer poured on my head. I know why they wear goggles now.
Moseley!!!!!!! Moseley!!!!! Moseley!!!!!! Moseley!!!!!!! Moseley!!!!!!!
Posada!!!!!!!! Moseley!!!!!! Moseley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BANG BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That, friends, will be a Yankees Classic. Count on it.
Congratulations to the NY Yankees, their bullpen and offense that picked up their starter!!!!
Wow, nice 8th inning!
Congrats on game one, Yank fans – your guys never give up.
On the road I was disappointed in the team that they weren’t picking up CC. After he gave up the two additional runs, I figured it might be too much to pick him up. But thanks go some grit, hustle, and clutch hitting with a lot of help from the Rangers they did more than pick up CC. They picked themselves up, too.
Best part of tonight after the win? – Cliff Lee watching and thinking, “I want me some of those bats”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mo is the greatest there will ever be; as an English major, I continue to struggle for ways to describe him. A legend.
Great job by Moseley……………major props to Cash for bringing this guy up. He did a really fine job as the #5 starter and now came through in a huge spot. Had he not held the fort, the comeback would not have been possible
Lets get greed. Win game 2.
One of the more frequent comments amongst some Yankee fans this season was how this 2010 yankee team didn’t have the kind of “heart” or “fight” last year’s team had. No Damon and Matsui, no walk offs, etc.
This 2010 team had more come back wins than any team in baseball.
And tonight once again this team showed enormous heart and fight and intangibles and whatever else you want to call it.
They played one of the better post season games in the history of this storied franchise. It was that good. To come back in game one after your ace just doesn’t have it and the other teams ace going in game 3 is just enormous.
Huge team win tonight. It’s just a great team. Amazing how misguided some yankee fans are – they continue to complain about this team and write them off in games when they come back time and time again.

Huge game for Cano, Arod, Thames, Jeter, Gardner and Moseley.
And credit Girardi for bullpen management.
Also chalk one up for Joe for putting Moseley on the playoff roster over Nova, Javy and the rest. It was the right decision and has already payed dividends.
This Texas team has to be demoralized to lose that way – up 5-0, chase Sabathia out of the game and cough up the lead in the 8th inning burning through most of their pen in the process. Bad feelings all around for them and their shocked friends. They have been deeply humbled, no doubt.
Good vibes for the Yankees clubhouse. This was a great team win and the team should be AMPED tomorrow to show some support for Phil the same way they did today for CC. They really bailed him out and carried him like he carried the team much of the postseason last year. That’s gratitude.
If we go up 2-0, Andy will be toying with the Rangers in Game 3 because they will be pressing, making Mr. baseball doctorer Cliff Lee irrelevant.
yes.
if this game does not temper the doom and gloom crowd when the Yanks are down, I am not sure what will.
just an unbelievable effort by this team. Garder’s play summed it all up. Down 5-1 in the eighth and he is going balls out down the line on a sharp grounder. Players seeing a play like that feed off of it. There are better players, but you just have to have guys like that on your team. He picked everyone up and woke them up with such an amazing hustle play.
We have to get to their bullpen. That was a key, lets go PHIL. It’s your turn to shine.
That nervous smile and laugh from Nolan made my night. Throw your best at us Nolan. Your ace is going to be in pinestripes next year and our #1 had the worst postseason start of his career and your team can’t take advantage.
Tomorrow Texas gets a look at the Phranchise.
I made it home from the meeting and started watching the game in the 8th inning….turns out I still got to see all the good stuff…
Huge huge win for the Yanks.

————–
I think part of the “problem” is that, this season, they didn’t wait until the last inning to make the come back. That’s why there was a “lack” of walk-off wins. They won the games in the 6th, 7th, and 8th instead.
The 8th inning for Texas is exactly why Ring wasn’t on the Yanks roster. Texas figured that anyone with a left hand can get the Yanks out and brought in a AAA lefty to face the Yanks best hitter. Washington thought he was cute with his matchups and it cost them. I was hoping it would back fire and it did. Rapada only pitched 9 innings this year lol
CC the ACE SABATHIA kept us in it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That tag in the first inning won us the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that wild pitch that bounced back was huge.

CB, best post of the night.
I never complain about the Yankees or get down because I know they will always play as hard as they can and never give up. If they don’t give up then I can’t either. Sometimes they get the win, sometimes they don’t but they NEVER QUIT. Fans should take a lesson from that.
Good night Yankee people!
The thing is, Mo getting out of it against Young and Hamilton didn’t surprise me a bit. It’s always scary when Mo puts runners on because he gives up the wimpiest, stupidest hits – and those runners on base usually score thanks to those bloops.
Absolutely fantastic win. I was already writing this in as a loss……………now, we have to get CC back on track
Holy cow! They stole this game.
I will admit that I had partially given up on this game early. (I say partially cause I kept watching and didn’t change the channel once) I did state though that they were getting hits, just not timely ones. The big key was getting Wilson out of the game before it was too late which they did. When it got to 5-2 I was like, we are still in this and then it went to 5-4 with no outs and all I was thinking was please get some guys in and they delivered. Huge innings by Joba and Moseley to keep more runs off the board. It was a total team win tonight and I’m glad they picked up an uncharacteristically bad CC. Let’s get them again tomorrow!
Tom Kelly, when he was manager of the Twins, once said that “this Rivera guy should be in a higher league. I don’t know where that league is. He shouldn’t be in this league. He should be made illegal.”
C.C. Sabathia is no ace .
When you watch the replay, listen to the sound of Cano’s HR and compare it to every other hit. It’s multiple decibels louder.
Very, very, very large win. Now go for the jugular.
Hamilton is probably going to win the MVP and had a fantastic season. He’s a great player and he’s a warrior for playing hurt this postseason. That being said there is not another player in the game that I want on my team in a big situation than Robinson Cano. The guy is just entering his prime and it is sure going to be fun to watch even if he can get even better than his now. Next up might be 40 homers.
Moseley gets the win. You just can’t predict baseball.
for those of you who always complain about swinging at first pitches, the Arod and Cano hits were both on the first pitch. I thought they should have attacked Wilson more the second time through the order because he was getting ahead consistently with fastballs right down Broadway.
I did say that the Rangers aggressive base running would bite them against the yankees. Kinsler had no business trying to steal vs a flyball / strike out / walk pitcher like Wood.
hman23
The doom and gloom crowd will forget as soon as the Yankees fall behind again. It never fails.
The only good thing about CC having a bad game, was he did it early enough to give the team a chance to come back.
It’s hard to fathom watching Mo that this is the equivalent of watching Babe Ruth or Joe DiMaggio.
Blake, I’m glad you got to see the best part of the game!

4 games down, 7 games to go!
Destiny!
Tonight’s victory is for all you naysayers, and some frontrunning whiners who questioned the character and determination of this team, comparing it to the 2009 team.
A second win despite CC coming up very small. He needs to improve substantially.
That play by Teix on that bunt was amazing. If you watch closely he actually slips on his way to the ball. 99 out of a 100 first basemen might panic there and rush, not Teix.
Moseley was so big. Not everyone can do it in the post-season.
Sucks for Wilson, who’s really good…………good for us, though
“Moseley gets the win. You just can’t predict baseball. ”
But you can predict John Sterling.
Ha! Ha! Loved Girardi’s line just now -
“If there is a collision at home plate CC is going to win it”.
All those screaming Ranger Fans thought it was in the bag. Wrong, once again they are denied the home playoff win. Great WIN ! ! ! ! ! Great TEAM effort all around ! ! ! ! !
I hope that Phil is filthy tomorrow.
CC will be the first one admit he stunk it up tonight and won’t make any excuses even if pitching only 2X in 16 days isn’t the ideal situation for a guy who lives on a heavy work schedule. He’ll be back in game 5 if they don’t sweep and pitch a great game.
Never saw Babe or Joe D play but I can’t imagine that they have had even close to the success rate Mo has had under such extreme pressure. He needs his own annex in the Hall of Fame.
Had the Yankees lost today, I am 100% certain CC would have pitched Game 4 and a possible Game 7 against Lee. But, it’s a moot point now… Thank God!!
“Sometimes they get the win, sometimes they don’t but they NEVER QUIT. Fans should take a lesson from that.”
No they never do. Just look at the quality of at bats and the quality of play they were executing at at the end of the game compared to Texas.
Gardner is going blood and guts down the line to make something out of nothing and Kinsler is getting picked off first.
The Texas manager is changing pitchers like it’s a merry go round and Alex and Cano have brilliant at bats.
Mo gives up a rinky dink hit but then comes back and overpowers the Rangers best hitter in Hamilton and one of their 3 or 4 best in Young.
It’s just a fantastic team, one that is deep in players that can execute at incredibly high levels.
Gut wrenching loss for Texas.
Wilson had good command tonight. I like the Yankees against him though. That was his A+ command tonight. If they see him again I bet he’s out in the 5th
Kay thinks the series is over. He’s too stupid to be believe.
“That play by Teix on that bunt was amazing”
He waited as long as he could to see if it would go foul. The runners was on the inside of the base path, he could have thrown right in his back. I believe the umps would have called that obstruction.
Mosely with the unsung hero award.

Right now Lee is saying I can’t wait until I am wearing pinstripes and are apart of come backs like that next year. We will see you starting game 2 next year….
WCYF – Hemingway, in “The Old Man and the Sea” (I believe) wrote of The Great DiMaggio. “Never doubt DiMaggio”.
The Great Rivera. Never doubt Rivera.
Singy making a note that this was a tale of two bullpens. Joba, Moseley, and Mo did their jobs. The Rangers failed in theirs. As Kay just said, they have too many matchup type guys. Problem is, the Yanks have too many hitters who can hit both rightys and leftys.
Too many postgames on at once.
Is Mosely the 2010 version of 1996 David Weathers?
Said it once, said it many times:
Mo is an assassin.
The BPs will be the difference in this series. Texas BP sucked against the Rays, sucked tonight. Why do you think Cliff Lee pitched a CG in game 5?
This win still does not beat game 7 in 2003. Notably, the 8th was very similar in both games.
MG October 16th, 2010 at 12:15 am
YEAH!!!! CC!! CC!! CC!!
Even though he didnt have it, he kept his head in the game and made the tag of Cruz at the plate and all in all, he kept us in the game.
The true definition of an ace!!! My life’s on the line, Im takin’ CC…..EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!
I’m no fan of Ernie Johnson (I can’t separate him from basketball), but he summed it up tonight after the last out with …
“For the Rangers tonight, there are losses … and then there are LOSSES.”
For the nth time, Jeter proved me wrong again… Great game !!! Great win… Now we need to put the pedal on and win game 2… 2-0 puts pressure on Lee in a must win game..
Wilson is not really good
You have to think CC and Wood were rusty due to the week off but then you have to look at other guys who were tired down the stretch in the regular season and didn’t get much rest at all. Cano is fully energized now. He is one key player who likely benefited from the layoff. Jeter is another. Mo as well. I’d say more guys benefit from rest than not so overall the Yankees had a huge advantage coming into this series against a tired Texas team and now we have a big boost in Game 1.
Girardi made all the right moves tonight. He deserves a lot of credit and the team attitude reflects his fight. They really battle and always seem to come up with a chance to at least tie. Yankee classic!!!!!
I’m harsh on him sometimes but Jeter was unbelievable. Clutch hits, solid fielding, executing a perfect run down…. I thought he was the key to this series coming in since Texas was loading up on LHP and he was magnificent tonight.
Did anyone see how devastated Ernie, John and Ron looked in the booth when they were changing pitchers after we took the lead!!!!!!!!!! BOOOOOOOM!!!!
I never ever doubted Jeter, no matter how badly he was struggling. I just knew he’d have his moments in the post-season.
I love Jeter’s attitude – “it doesn’t matter if you don’t back it up in game 2″
THAT’S your New York Yankees!!! Their ace has a rough game, they’re down 5 runs and can’t hit CJ Wilson, and what do they do but pick CC, who pitched them to a championship last year and carried the rotation this year!!! Then it’s five runs in the 8th and the undisputed king and heavyweight champion of postseason relief pitching slams the door shut in the 9th. Beyond awesome!!!
And the black-haired talking head on Baseball Tonight is trying to talk the Rangers into a win tomorrow, babbling a mile a minute as he lays out a strategy where Texas can be up 3-1 in no time. LOL!!!!!
the series isn’t over, Texas is a good ballclub but it will be interesting to see how Colby Lewis pitches tomorrow, it isn’t inconceivable the Yankees could make short work of him and win the game easily but I’d rather wait until it happens and not make any assumptions.
“That being said there is not another player in the game that I want on my team in a big situation than Robinson Cano. ”
He very well may have the best swing in baseball. Pujols is obviously the best player in the game. But Robbi has a historically great swing. It is so balanced, so quick and produced contact on the sweet spot so often it’s just amazing.
That home run he hit breathed life into this team. It was a huge hit.
And then he comes in against a very tough, unorthodox LOOGY and just squares up and blasts the ball through the middle for a huge RBI.
He is a great, great baseball player. Would have been 4-4 tonight were it not for Andrus making a wonderful defensive play.
Funny thing about Wilson, anyone remember earlier in the season he dominated the Yankees for 5 innings then melted down as the Yankees mounted a comback?
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Mr. Ryan might think about better guests in his box.
CR9, CC was flat out rusty tonight, from tyhe layoff. Hate to make excuses when a player doesn’t execute, but … how often have we ever seen the big guy walk 3 in one inning? And it WAS the first.
The hitters picked him up tonight.
It’s an early game tomorrow which is probably better for Texas. That being said the matchup is in the Yankees hands. They really should knock around Lewis early and we all saw the Texas bullpen tonight. I’ve always liked Holland alot but he’s probably unavailable for the next few days even if he’s used to starting. If the Yanks jump on them early and Phil has that late life look out.

Look on Bush’s dumb face. Priceless!
I am still so pumped about Gardner’s play. I just love having him on this team and am so happy that he was given the chance. During the off season, there was a lot of talk about the need to get someone else in to start over Gardner. I am glad the Yanks gave him the chance. His speed can be such a game-changer, and he plays solid defense. The hitting will only improve.
He just tore down the line on that infield hit. Even on his out to end the inning, he was out by a half step.
The lineup was obviously a bit off (maybe rusty, maybe just getting beat by good pitching, whatever)). You cannot say enough of what that hustle did to spark the team. You cannot tell me that the rest of the lineup did not feed off of that.
I love this team!! I love this organization!!! They are champions, past present and future! They define Champions in every single way!! Theyre everything I desire to be in life!!!!!!!!!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Betsy-
I’m not underestimating him. I’ve seen what this team can do. Beating up on the AL West doesn’t impress me.
I firmly believe tomorrow Phil’s career comes full circle from that 2nd start of his career. He’s pitching on regular rest and I’m expecting big things. I think they grind out Lewis and do the same thing in game 4 to Hunter.
The more at bats Jeter has to close out the season the more it looks like his struggles this season were more mechanical than age related loss of physical skill. Since he adjusted that timing mechanism with his front foot his bat speed to the ball looks much, much better.
He squared the ball up well tonight and has been terrific this post season.
WCYF – by the way, how’d you’re grilling go today? That was some menu you posted.
Does Lewis throw hard or does he throw slop? I hope Hughes brings his good stuff tomorrow and with the shadows he should have an advantage.
The Captain sure doesn’t look done to me and Rivera continues to be the greatest weapon maybe in the history of the sport. He just makes such a difference. Great night for the Yankees to steal this game and they owe it all to their bullpen and never say die attitude. The earlier posts by CB and others are dead on….this team never quits.

Great post. Amid all the talk of dropping him in the order, etc etc, I knew he would be heard from eventually.
On another note, Kinsler just admitted in the post game that he was stealing when he got picked off by Wood (not a hit-and-run). While I was watching these guys running wild on the Rays, I was thinking that if they tried that against the Yankees, they would (will) pay.
This is a real confident, experienced group.
Tyler, that would be nice. It’s obvious that 2007 is still a painful memory for Phil………………It would be fantastic if he had that same FB, but I guess we’ll see more curves and changes.

Not political, but YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take that, DUBYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOOOOOOOM!!!
Jeter ironically started turning his season around against Cliff Lee the last time they were in Texas….he has gradually looked more and more like himself ever since. He’s not done by a long shot despite all the talk.
All the regulars are back, I figured once the Yankees won or were winning that all the negative nancy’s would run for cover and they did.
I’m pretty sure everyone can agree with me here that when the A-team is out there, good things happen. Yeah Kearnsy had better numbers against Wilson but would he have slid into first to start that 8th inning rally? Not a chance. Hopefully Joe made a note of that in his binder.
I was able to get my dad into the game tonight after introducing him to Gardner. I told him he was my fave cause of his knack for fouling off pitches and his speed and he showcased them both tonight.
Marcus Thames = Hideki Matsui on the Clutch-o-Meter
Joe it was great thanks! My friends scarfed everything while I was watching the game but they brought me a plate with three lamb chops and some mac and cheese which was plenty for me.
Was it mentioned on the telecast tonight that 2 of the Yankees players salaries combined
is greater than the entire Rangers team salaries combined?
I didn’t hear it, but was it said?
If anyone has read the Game Thread, it is amazing how little faith the people on here have in the team they are supposed to love.
I read it as a kick because I knew what it would say. And then what do you know, the Yankees have a big inning and those same people sounded like a group of little angels.
That’s why I rarely say anything during a game.
I think Kinsler telegraphed his move by the fake jumps on earlier pitches.
It was timing the move in reverse. Wood timed Kinsler. I love it.
Betsy-
I like the way he matches up against Texas not to jinx anything. It is painfully obvious that Hamilton is going to have a hard time hitting a fastball this series. I like Phil’s heavy heater and cutter eating him up.
Kinsler getting picked off was not at all pure dumb luck, I think.
The Yankees were watching them against the Rays. And they were ready tonight.
Kinsler made the dumbest, most bonehead play I have ever seen.
Good night folks, things to do. Catch y’all tomorrow.
That was the 1st homerun that Wilson gave up to a lefty in 2 years. WOW…
Note the negative posters have all vanished, and people are talking real baseball again.

For how much criticism Cashman took with the signing of Nick Johnson it looks like he found his DH after all huh? He’s been a God-send to this team.

tyanksfan36 – Baseball is meant to build bonds within families. It has in mine – I’m thinking of my own father, and now my stepson.
That pick on Kinsler was huge…I did not like the direction that inning was headed before that and it really seemed to give Wood a boost on confidence. Huge play.
i didn’t know how close that a-rod hit was to young. it could’ve been a hard out.
That’s very cool Joe.
Tyler, when he reacts like “ok, whatever” to the news that he’s starting game 2 (or in the ALDS, game 3), then it’s obvious he’s all cool. If he’s truly found his 2nd win, he’ll be good tomorrow.
igotid88-
While that ball was crushed and took a big hop, I think Young probably could have come up with that. It would have been a very good play but I think it was possible. It just ate him alive.
I really hope we resign Thames. He ALWAYS comes through in big spots.
For those complaining about Swisher’s sac bunt attempt…he doesn’t miss often. In four games this year, he had 3 sac bunts and one bunt single. He actually can bunt. Not saying that he should have bunted after the first foul, but, it wasn’t a bad play to take one shot at it. Doubtful that it was called from the bench.
On another note – tonight’s game by Texas once again showed how foolish it often is to save your “closer” to pitch the 9th inning.
The game was absolutely, positively on the line in the 8th inning. That was it. Texas shuts down the yankees there during that rally and chances are they win the game.
Washington uses 5 pitchers that inning I believe. Yet none of those pitchers is even remotely as good as Neftali Feliz. 5 pitchers and he doesn’t even use his best option to put out the fire that the game hinged on.
Just amazingly short sighted.
Anybody remember the “Andy Fox Game” from ’96?
# igotid88 October 16th, 2010 at 12:32 am
i didn’t know how close that a-rod hit was to young. it could’ve been a hard out.
———
Young played that ball like a transplanted third basemen. Nettles would have smothered that ball with his body.
I wonder if somebody on the Yanks bench guessed that Kinsler was looking to go, and signaled to Jorge/Wood to check him out. If they indeed were looking to catch him leaning…. I always learn something new about baseball.
Phoenix is getting hammered tonight in the AFL but, Laird is 3-4 with a 2 run homer.
Not so good for Romine with a 1-4 night and 3 strikeouts. Kontos got hammered in relief.
Betsy-
I think the only time I have ever seen “bad” body language out of Hughes was that one start in 2008 against Detroit when he got knocked around it was later revealed that he had the broken ribs (I think?). He’s got great demeanor on the mound which is why many anointed him as the successor to Mo. Thing is that he has 3 quality pitches and can be a front of the rotation starter.
“I think Kinsler telegraphed his move by the fake jumps on earlier pitches.
It was timing the move in reverse. Wood timed Kinsler. I love it.”
I have no idea if this is the case obviously – but just watching that sequence I was wondering if Posada called for Wood to throw over based on something he saw on the prior pitches.
Just a guess because before then Wood really wasn’t paying a great deal of attention to Kinsler.
My adrenaline’s gonna be pumping for another 2 hours baby!!!!!!!! What a team effort from the greatest team in sports history!!!!!
I think Hughes will come up huge tomorrow. Just a gut feeling.
I really didn’t think this was going to be a Yankee night. CC struggled, and the Yankee bats were being kept quiet for too long.
One incredible play by CC on fielding that ball and getting the out at home. The big guy can move.
I also really don’t like seeing players slide into first base. Rarely is it a good move, yet Gardner proved the exception to that. Had he not gone in on a slide he very likely would have been tagged out.
I know the Yankees don’t give up, but in the playoffs a 5 run deficit is pretty substantial. Robbies blast seemed to help open the door though. This isn’t going to be a cake walk series. The Rangers are a decent team, and they beat the Rays in a tough series.
I think the Rangers did well being aggressive against the Rays. The way the Rays play they are not as used to a team doing that against them. The Yanks don’t get flustered by aggressive play though. Tonight Kinsler got caught. He was doing as the Rangers have been doing, but it was a real sweet throw over, and it could have the Rangers playing a little more conservatively to not give up outs. We’ll see.
CB – why am I not surprised that you would bring that up, about Feliz?
That was truly a spot for a two inning save.
“…before then Wood really wasn’t paying a great deal of attention to Kinsler.”
It could have been routine, seeing as how that was the case. If it was routine, it was lucky. But I’d like to think Posada saw something.
Betsy
After that story about the sprinklers, the PS should be a breeze.
I would bet Posada called the throw to first.
I love TIVO. I’m going to watch the 8th inning 20 times.
Tyler, the only other time was late last year – he arued with the ump and then I think he split before the media could ask him ?. I believe he regretted those actions – that’s just not Phil.
The media is silly; they can’t figure out what is the best mentality to have for a closer: Joba’s or Phil’s. Frankly, they’re lazy. Phil struggled as a starter, so naturally he should be closer. Maybe had they remembered that he was hurt/rehabbing in 2007 and 2008 they would have been a bit more patient. I really have to question just how much they know about pitching …..They seemed to relish dumping all over Phil when he struggled. Perhaps because he was so hyped ?
On another note – tonight’s game by Texas once again showed how foolish it often is to save your “closer” to pitch the 9th inning.
———
the last time Feliz pitched he gave up 2 hits including a HR in .1 innings. It’s possible that Washington was reluctant to bring him in. Texas’ bullpen is a mess. Lee is going to throw until his arm falls off in game 3.
blake October 16th, 2010 at 12:39 am
I would bet Posada called the throw to first.
——————–
I wasn’t really looking at the signal but normally a catcher gives puts his thumb up for a pick off throw, it’s probably there if the replay is shown.
Joe from LI
Well my dad is a Rays fan and he hates when I talk about the Yankees. When we were down 3-0 I went out to the living room and told him we were losing. He got this huge grin on his face and made a comment about CC being a choker and then turnd on the TV to watch the demise of my team(which he thoroughly enjoyed cause he went to bed before the rally) when Gardner was up I told him how much I like gardner cause he makes the pitcher work and give him something good to hit. When he beat out that double play, my dad was like..wow he is good and fast too. We both enjoy baseball but its hard to watch together cause we are both sensitive about our teams.
I have to say Yanks got lucky tonight, but who cares, a win is a win.
Buster_ESPN
Burnett’s wild simulated game has convinced the Yankees to do what they can to bypass him altogether.
—————
Unfortunately they can’t skip him unless everyone goes on short rest and I don’t think that is the right move. Hunter isn’t good so game 4 will probably be a high scoring game and I like the Yanks lineup against him.
Incredible win tonight for this team. You’ve already done what you’ve come to Texas to do at this point, but I just KNOW Phil is going to pitch a gem tomorrow. Hopefully, we can grab another one from them before heading home.
Another great thing that will probably come out of this game: CC will throw shut-em-down ball in his next go round. Trust.
You’d have to imagine the Yankees walking around the clubhouse after the game and whenever their eyes meet they’re filled with confidence. They must feel so confident in one another. It’s gonna be hard for Texas to break this momentum.
KPB, that’s right, lol……….
now Kay says this series is over, again.
Also, congrats CR9. If I were you, I’d play some lotto numbers..
“CR9 October 15th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
The Yankees can come back and win this game.”
MG,
I don’t think the camera caught it (not that I saw anyway) but I would guess that he gave the thumb…Kerry could have thrown over on his own I guess though….either way though, Kinsler can’t get pick there.
“# tyanksfan36 October 16th, 2010 at 12:29 am
”
Yeah also having Posada in the lineup every game helps, just looks more circular. Loving Gardner’s at bats. Like Pete that used to call him GGBG(I think )…this game showed that
Well, time for bed. Great win, a Yankees’ Classic.
Good night, fellow Yankees’ fans. The Yankees Win!
Back at it tomorrow. 4 down, 7 to go.
Who gives a damned about what Bluster Only says. He’s an idiot.
“Lee is going to throw until his arm falls off in game 3.”
You can take that to the bank.
Good thing the Rangers were very aggressive against the Rays so the Yanks knew to look for it. They were ready for it and everyone knew that Kinsler was going to try and steal and Posada was ready for it.
It didn’t matter what Wood or Posada did, it was just a throw over, was not a good move. The mistake was 100% Kinsler. There is no excuse to be picked off in that situation. You should be a foot off the bag. It was a little league play and very stupid.

it was a really bad play by Kinsler and his interview was really strange, he just said he was going the wrong way and got caught, nothing else.
I know I’m going to flamed for this but for some reason I think AJ would come up huge in game 4. No evidence to back this up ( and probably a lot more present to the contrary) but just a gut feeling.

ha it would be fun to watch. He has the stuff
Blake, whether Posada called the throw over to first or whether Wood did it alone, I think they both saw the same thing. Kinzler was taking huge leads and it kept getting larger. Gotta love the Yankees making that play on just the one throw from Teixeira to Jeter. Let Jeter either chase him back to first to tag him out. Chasing them to the next bag is never a good idea.
I don’t think the camera caught it (not that I saw anyway) but I would guess that he gave the thumb…Kerry could have thrown over on his own I guess though….either way though, Kinsler can’t get pick there.

Stuck out his thumb
and caught the run
and said, “Heck of a catcher am I”
Kay really annoys me. Its a 7 game series, and the Rangers are a very good team. I wish he wouldn’t so blatantly show his love for the Yankees. Its just annoying and unprofessional. I think the Yankees will win the series, but saying that its “over” because the Yankees won game one in dramatic fashion is just stupid.
“NEW YORK—Yankees manager Joe Girardi admitted to reporters Wednesday that he still had doubts that starter CC Sabathia could muster the energy and strength to endure walking to the mound on just three days’ rest. “I’m fairly sure he can make it about halfway to the mound, but he’s going to be exhausted,” said Girardi, expressing concerns about the wear and tear on his ace pitcher’s body. “Usually he only makes it without collapsing on four days’ rest, but this is the ALCS, so he might just have to gut it out. Either way, we are going to keep a close eye on his step count.” Girardi said he planned to have Sabathia conserve energy by sitting down between pitches, and intended to have seven or eight players carry the 2007 Cy Young winner into the dugout after each inning”

Kay is so arrogant
GB7,
Jeter is so smart. As soon as he got the ball you new that play was going to end well.
Tom, that’s hilarious – I LOVE the Onion.
Step count?
Tyler
No flames here, check Trisha’s chart. I called the Yanks in 4. If anyone catches flames, it’ll be me.
How big an idiot is Michael Kay? “The series is over”. Singleton almost punched him. Fisrt the Cliff Lee crap about his hat and now this.
I have at bat 2010 with gameday and i watched the pick off of Kinsler. Posada had his hand in a fist with the thumbs up and right before Wood threw over to first, Posada turned his wrist pointing at first. So Im pretty sure the pickoff was called by Posada.
This series is far from over. People who are saying so are putting too much emphasis on home field advantage.
The Yankees are favored to win games 1 and 2 based on the pitching match ups. But Texas has to be at least a slight favorite in game 3 and with AJ going in game 4 it’s a huge toss up as we have no idea what we’ll get from him.
Games 3 and 4 are the key games of this series.
Moseley and Wood chewed a hell of a chalupa tonight, didn’t they?
Jeter’s about the smartest player I’ve ever seen.
I’m just enjoying the victory and not looking further ahead than tomorrow’s game.
Exactly. The two best on the foeld was handling the ball. I think that’s one the first page of the “Running The Pickle Play”.
All the pressure on Texas tomorrow (actually later today). They gotta win one of the first two to have a shot.
As for Kay, he said at least three times that the series was over. Talk about a jinx. Singleton, of course, disagreed.
Game 4 – in the hands of AJ and Hunter. Go figure.
Sounds like CC is saying that he just didn’t have it today – at least he’s being honest.
At least the Yanks know when the Rangers starter is out of the game the game is never over. I doubt Lewis and Hunter will pitch deep in their starts and Feliz was ready to crap his pants against the Rays. Lee will probably throw 200 pitches in his start but every other game is the Yanks lineup against decent pitchers.

Yeah, I can live with the obvious favoritism towards the Yankees when he is at least being subtle about it. Saying the series is over is just beyond stupid. I’m so glad that the games are being played on TBS and not YES…
If Burnett does nothing more than match Hunter pitch for pitch, that’s what you hope for. Hopefully, he pitches the same games that he pitched in his first PS starts last year.
Texas has not won a playoff game at home in maybe 13 years?
Going for the WC is looking more and more like Cashman’s “Brady Bunch” comment.
For Game 4 I would let AJ start to try to redeem himself, but I think he should have a short leash and Mosely should be prepared to come in at any time. Usually if AJ is bad he will be roughed up early, so you know to get him out of there quick.
Aww, it’s Mosely’s wife’s birthday!
Pittsburgh – Theyve never won a home playoff game. The only playoff game they won in 1996 was game 1 at Yankee Stadium and the WP was Burkett.

Thanks for that. That’s what I was guessing just watching the sequence.
Nice call by Posada.
Kinsler in his postgame said that Wood is quick to the plate and that’s why he was trying to get an aggressive jump. That’s just completely untrue. Wood is generally slow to the plate. Kinsler is just trying to explain away his mistake. Not a good sign for the Rangers.
Marcus Thames has been clutch all year. I hope they can bring him back in 2011.
Hearing Arod talk about “keep the line moving” tells you all you need to know about his transformation from having to be “the man” to just being part of the team and becoming the man just by consequence.

Washington’s a dope. How did he manage to get his best relievers into a game they were leading by 4? Or were those his best relievers?
Eduardo Perez and Chris Singleton get half credit each. Wilson did shut down the Yankees…sorta. And the Rangers bullpen soiled their pants…except it wasn’t Feliz.
GB,
I have never seen the Bluster Only bit before. If you made that up…I love it!!! If you didn’t, I love it.
*How did Washington NOT manage to get his best relievers into the game?
Yeah, Kay – Phil had no pressure on him in game 3 ALDS; they didn’t want to win that game so they could avoid pitching CC. Kay has taken stupid pills tonight

I don’t know anything about the MiL seasons, except it’s over. I read what you’ve posted about the AFL. Does it last all ML off season, and if so, does it have broadcasts on the internet? It wasn’t until this past week that I realized how much this winter is going to stink without some kind of baseball game. Thanks.
I think Kay has taken stupid pills every night for the last 10 years, at least.
My point was that Kay was trying to diminish his last start; I’m certainly aware that it wasn’t a must win game
I love Moseleys postgames.
They always have a a “if I’m dreaming don’t wake me” quality to them.
Why is Burnett getting pulled before a single pitch has been thrown?
Yanks have their split now but just as in Minnesota they need to get greedy. They need to be up at least 2-1 heading into game 4 whether that means winning tomorrow or beating Cliff Lee (or better yet winning both games)…they need to be ahead in the series for Burnett’s start. That would take some of the pressure off that game knowing that you have Sabathia on regular rest at home for game 5.
Winning tomorrow also puts a lot of pressure on Texas in Game 3 in a game that I think the Yankees will have a much better chance to win than a lot of folks do.
SAS, I have about as much use for Bluster as I do for Sherman and that other ESPN idiot Sheepdip Bayless. If that guy isn’t a tulip, he’s playing the part well. He has limper wrists than Cher.

Did someone say that , or are you referring to what has been posted on here?
Blake, I agree. I just hope that the team was just rusty for most of the game and that that rust will be off tomorrow.
KPB, the AFL runs about 40 games or so, until mid-November. If you want, I can give you the link to the site and the Yankee winter League kids.
I didn’t see the whole game but in the few innings I watched, I saw both Hamilton and Murphy boot balls. They’re looking at the runners instead if the ball.
Saw we had an error. What was it for and did it cost us?
surprised washington didn’t bring in his closer to stop the bleeding.
Thank god wins don’t matter. 7 innings 2 runs for Wilson. He wins right?

Buster’s tweet. People pulling him on short leash. We’ve seen that even our most reliable pitchers can give it up. But again let’s just yank the benefit if the doubt away from AJ before the fact. He’s had a rough second half, but let’s at least wait until Game 4 to kill him.

Grounder to Alex. Cost Moseley a few pitches but no runs.
I don’t usually get caught up in the media stuff or read really much of anything by any of these guys, but this is so bad it’s almost funny.
“That was a classic example of us having a tough start for the first six innings,” said Rodriguez, who scooted home with the tiebreaking run soon after his two-run single that was nearly a double-play grounder. “Then a great at-bat and a great slide gets us going.”

What is the graph, the Rangers fans hope?
Its hard to not be a little rusty when you’ve played virtually every day since April and then suddenly have a week off. Its ridiculous how the scheduling is handled and I’m glad it will be different next year.
CB,
It is really amazing how the role of “closer” has distorted how a team’s best reliever should be used. Managers continue to save their best weapon for situations that may never occur.
m
yeah much to the Ranger fans excitement, Alex misplayed a ball on a bad hop and didnt get the throw to first. but we escaped with no harm done.

“Its ridiculous how the scheduling is handled and I’m glad it will be different next year.”
blake, what do you propose MLB change?
The Tampa-Texas series went 5.
Are you suggesting eliminating off-days between games 2-3 and 4-5? Despite the ever-present potential of a east-west coast series?
That series ended Tuesday. Are you suggesting just one off team between the potential game 5 and game 1 of the ALCS?
That would be 1 one day gained back…

“It is really amazing how the role of “closer” has distorted how a team’s best reliever should be used. Managers continue to save their best weapon for situations that may never occur.”
It’s sister boneheaded managerial cliche is only using a closer in a “save” situation. Somehow an arbitrary statistic is dictating how you use players…
Stupid.
I dont really like Olney and Sherman but I have to say that I read “birth of a dynasty” by sherman and “the last night of the yankees dynasty” by Olney and I really enjoyed them both. They kind of dragged on but I found them both informative and good reads. I actually lent the Olney book to my boss who is a Rays fan and she comments to me all the time about how she likes it and how she never realized the chemistry and the guys that made up the 2001 team and the 96-2001 dynasty, she thought it was all “do my own thing thinking” and not a team mentality
Maybe the pickoff made them gun shy, but I thought they would be more aggressive. Why not substitute for Moreland with a PR if he’s so bad on the bases?
Oh, wait. They took off a position player for a FOURTH LHR.
pitch by pitch of the ALF games,
I have just bookmarked it. Thanks.
————————–
I thought that show went off in the 80s.
Not sure how bad the infield around 3rd base is chewed up or if it’s rock hard, but, there have been some strange bounces there the last few games and tonight was no different for either Rodriguez or Young.
Stuckey,
They get 1 travel day a week for the entire season. Then suddenly when the postseason starts you get a travel day every time cities are switched. At the very least this series should have started yesterday and honestly I don’t see why they couldn’t have played Game 5 of the division series on Monday.
Now I know that probably isn’t going to change but rust builds faster in baseball than other sports. A team that sweeps should have an advantage in the next round over a team that takes 5 games and that advantage starts to shift to disadvantage when you’re sitting and waiting for a week. I think they could get rid of some travel days but as I said, at the very least they should have been playing Game 2 of this series tonight instead of Game 1.
Blake, if it’s just rust, then there’s nothing to be concerned about; did they change the schedule next year?

I’m not going to complain about the off days. I’d rather have them sweep and get in. You start letting teams into a series, and bad things start happening.
Stuckey,
I agree. The “save” stat has totally changed how these decisions are made. Had they brought Feliz into the game in the 8th then maybe the Yankees still win maybe they don’t….but I’m glad we didn’t have to find out.
GB,
If it has been hot and dry there for weeks, that would explain a lot. Since I have been in AZ, almost 3 weeks, other than one bad storm which dropped the temps, it has been 100 or more every day but today. Dallas is as far south as Phoenix, I think.
I recall Torre letting Mo sit on the bench at Shea Stadium while the Mets beat up whatever reliever we brought in
What a total team effort. That’s what it’s all about.
Feliz wasn’t exactly a shutdown pitcher in the post season against Tampa.
GB,
By the way, you never hear about the AFL here. I wouldn’t know it was going on except for a few people like you.

From a quality-of-play POV, I know exactly where you are coming from, but understand the off-days are a TV concession, to assure the covering Networks maximize their prime time coverage, ESPECIALLY in deciding games.
The 4-5 off days are not just travel days, they assure no more than 2 potential game 5s are played in 1 day.
obviously a huge win. washington made no mistakes his relief pitchers did not get anyone out.
kinsler pickoff is all on kinsler. terrible terribl play.
the only bonehead play the yanks had was the swisher bunt attempt. moronic. try it on the first pitch do not get it down then swing away. terrible terrible play. cervelli can bunt. swisher, not so much and jeter is on 2nd.. gave away a out for no firiggin reason………
KPB, it’s always best to blame those that aren’t around. Usually, I blame Randy, but at his age, you can only beat on him so much.
I would’ve let Swisher hit as well, but I believe I read that Swisher was 4 for 4 when asked to bunt. 1 basehit and 3 successful sacrifices.
Night, Blake!
GB,
I am in North Scottsdale…which is far to Mesa….and it depends where in Phoenix. Do they play during the day or at night. I don’t think my husband would be interested, and I wouldn’t go at night alone.
That W/Ryan screencap is priceless. Caption Contest?
I’ll start:
After realizing baseball games last 9 innings, President Bush wonders if he should take down the “Mission Accomplished” Banner he had placed in buddy Nolan Ryan’s office.
I wouldn’t change the schedule, because it would really start to mess with the pitching match ups.
I want to see the best on display in the postseason going head to head. I think the quality of the games would suffer if they eliminated all or most of the off days.
GB7
You’re all heart.
But, seriously thanks for the link. This was the first year I’ve been able to really engross myself into the Yanks with choices on how I’m able to watch them. This past week has been very long and had me thinking about this winter.
Cablevision and Fox suck.
They both look like they ate some bad BBQ
Fox probably sucks more because won’t accepting binding arb.
Just look at how much excitement there has been around the upcoming Halladay-Lincecum matchup.
You make the postseason reflect the regular season and you will end up with odd pitching matchups and too many crappy pitchers on display too often.
SAS, they play both day and night games. Not sure where the mark in Surprise or Phoenix is, but, I’ll see if I can locate them and you can pull up a city map of Phoenix. I’ll try to locate a team schedule, too. maybe you can see the Scottsdale Scorpions when Phoenix plays there.

My son told me about the Cablevision/Fox thing. He was upset about the Giant game Sunday, but I may just adjust my bill if I could figure out how much these games are worth.
Lol anybody see Rob Neyer’s writeup of the game. Basically gave no credit to the yanks and even said that Washington should have used Frank Francisco in the 8th…. The funny thing is that Francisco isn’t even on the ALCS roster due to injury. Also stated that Michael Young had a chance to catch Jeter’s double… That was a rocket down the line. All the comments are calling him an idiot. He corrected part of it but what a dope.
