Yankees offense silenced in Game 3

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 18, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

For nearly a week, all of the ALCS hype centered on Cliff Lee. Tonight, he did not merely live up to those expectations, he exceeded them. Through eight shutout innings, the Rangers ace shutdown the Yankees offense and silenced Yankee Stadium. He sent the Rangers to an 8-0 win that gave them a 2-1 lead in the series. Andy Pettitte was nearly as good, but Josh Hamilton’s first-inning home run gave the Rangers and early lead, and they added six runs off the bullpen in the ninth.

    I believe in Burnett.

Damn Chad. The game ended like 1/10 of a second ago. :x

A 1-2 hole isn’t the end. They’ve been there before and have come through. However that lackluster September performance has me less than optimistic since it feels like they’ve carried that right into a crucial time during the playoffs. Right now, the Rangers are pretty much doing what the Yankees did to the Angels in last year’s ALCS. Payback’s a ….

Either A.J. pitches the game of his life tomorrow or we will start counting down the days to spring training a lot sooner than we would like. I want to see the former happen.

    FIRE CASHMAN!

  5. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:31 pm

he made the big bad yanks look like little boys. jeter flailing at high fastballs. thames lunging multiple times at whatever outside and slow.

swisher has about 7 hits in the playoffs in 2 years. tex has maybe 1 or 2 more hits.

jorge is a lifetime 240 hitter on the big stage.

what a nice effore. maybe burnett refuses to pitch tommorrow unless his personal catcher plays. after all cervelli and aj have worked so well together.

nice nice effort. tip your cap, blah blah blah.

  6. Betsy October 18th, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Andy was as good as we could have hoped. Lee was phenomenal and the Yankees continued not to hit. That’s it in a nutshell; the Rangers have completely dominated this series.

“However that lackluster September performance has me less than optimistic since it feels like they’ve carried that right into a crucial time during the playoffs. ”

They did just sweep the Twins. Did those games not matter?

I can see I’m not long for the Lohud Yankee blog tonight.

Think I’ll shut it down until Thursday and only come back if the Yankees are up 3-2.

  8. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:32 pm

burnett is a mental midget. i pitch CC on 3 days rest and worry about game 5 weds……..

they will go with aj and who the hell knows how that jack-ass will do…….

  9. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:33 pm

betsy correct on all accounts. yanks ahead 2inning total in 3 games.

the reangers are hitting about 333 with RISP and the yanks not even 200……

  10. Erica in NY October 18th, 2010 at 11:33 pm

0 Days, 20 Hours, and 28 Minutes until Game 4 of the ALCS

  11. TheStraw October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

For those of you who didn’t read that Yahoo Sports article, the only other pitcher to dominate the posteason like this is a guy named Bob Gibson. If you want to blame this game on the offense and say they have no heart, etc., so be it. But you would be wrong. The Yankees simply got dominated tonight by a guy who is pitching like a hall of famer right now.

  12. JRod October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

There’s enough predictions of doom, so here’s an optimistic one:
Yanks will light up Tommy Hunter tomorrow night, and get to Wilson on Wednesday. We are going back to Texas up 3-2. Ron Washington will get itchy to throw Lee on 3 days rest.

  13. raymagnetic October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

Right now the Yankees have 3 players batting over .200 for the series. They’re going to start hitting.

Everything has gone right for the Rangers the first three games, but the Yankees are going to start hitting.

This is my story and I’m sticking to it until the Yankees are eliminated from the playoffs or win the WS.

  14. umbrelladoc October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

We can win tomorrow with Burnett, Moseley or whomever. We won a WS with Kenny Freaking Rogers as the fourth starter. And we lost the first two games at home to a team that had Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine.

  15. Tabbert October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

honestly…. how can a team in a championship series only hold a lead for 2 INNINGS??? If not for the biggest collapse in playoff history by the rangers we would not have led one single time this series. Lucky to not be down 3-0… the rangers have dominated us.

  16. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 18th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

    “I believe in Burnett.”

Me too. I think he’ll come up big.

  17. Asd October 18th, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I worry. I worry about what will happen. All I wish for is that they give it their hardest. If they do, and lose nonetheless, I am content.

  18. Captain Clutch October 18th, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Every year the Yanks are going to have to win in the post season without Tex. When you make $180m the excuses have to stop and you have to start performing. The offense looks exactly like it does every year in the post season last year was the one exception. Andy pitched his heart out but too bad the the switch was turned off for the offense in September and never turned back on.

Poor offense tonight didn’t surprise me that much, offense inconsistency has been going on for the entire season.

  23. raymagnetic October 18th, 2010 at 11:39 pm

I’m willing to lay my cards on the table right now.

The Yankees are winning this series and Cliff Lee will not get to pitch another game.

    Mark my words.

  24. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:39 pm

arod has done zilch. tex the same… swisher never does jack .. jeter is old and innefective.

girardi in the press conference should be classic.

  25. tyanksfan36 October 18th, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Andy pitched great, he will probably blame himself for the loss but he deserved better from his offense. A 2-0 homerun by josh hamilton is not like a 2-0 homerun by Andrus, it was his only mistake through 7 and I am so glad he was as awesome as he was. We couldn’t have asked for any more from him. The BP was a big letdown. I wouldve liked to see Feliz pitch with a 2-0 lead.
I’m looking forward to a good game by AJ tomorrow, even though statistically its a longshot. Now the offense needs to step it up.

“This series is over” -Michael Kay after Game 1

  29. Betsy October 18th, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Straw, that’s fine, but they haven’t hit all series – even against Wilson and Lewis – and their SP (aside from Andy) has been awful. Being dominated by Lee is one thing, but it’s not the main reason why people are so down on the team now.

  30. West Coast Yankee Fan October 18th, 2010 at 11:41 pm

It’s not only Cliff Lee. We had one good inning the entire series. Our hitting has been atrocious and an embarrassment.

  31. NDYankee October 18th, 2010 at 11:42 pm

I really miss Damon and Matsui. Unbelievable that Cashman thought the Yankees were better by letting those guys go.

  32. Captain Clutch October 18th, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Poor Andy, he deserved much better tonight. The offense didn’t touch Lewis or Wilson so we shouldn’t be surprised they didn’t touch Lee. If they don’t hit Hunter tomorrow then you know it’s the offense that is a joke and not the Rangers nobodies turning into Cy Young. It’s really unreal/pathetic how this offense turns into garbage in the post season.

  33. Tabbert October 18th, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Really would have liked berkman in the lineup instead of thames tonight. Much much more patient hitter.

  34. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

yep. michael kay knows jack. after the game 1 meltdown he absolutely said the series was over.

he has no clue. pro players deal with losses much better then fans. these guys have played 1000 games or more, they know about good wins and bad losses. it is there job…

  35. GhettoBlaster October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

lol @ NdYankee thinking the yanks lost tonight because Damon and Matsui aren’t on the team.

THIS BLOG IS GOING TO GET VERY UGLY TOMORROW

  36. Tyler October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

Lee pitched very very well but the Yanks just flat out stunk. Kudos to Pettite for another fantastic postseason performance. He was the warrior we all know he is. Texeira just has to get it going. There is no other way to put it. Matsui bailed him out last year and everybody forgot about his struggles but this year he is not getting bailed out. He is in the prime of his career and needs to play like it. This should be Tex and Cano’s team going foward.

And I don’t know why but I think AJ is going to do something special tomorrow. I’ve said that on here before. All proof shows otherwise but I have a hunch just looking at the guy. He better be good because the way they are hitting they won’t be able to knock around Hunter either.

  37. UnKnown October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  38. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

  39. raymagnetic October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

People have been down on this team the whole season. It’s nothing new. So please spare me with the reason why people are down on this team garbage.

I could pull up some posts during the playoffs last year and show numerous people who are down on the team.

People just like to be down on the Yankees. It’s there right to be down on them, but please don’t act like it’s anything new.

  40. YankFanCA October 18th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

People are deluded to expect anything from Burnett. He’s one of the worst starters in baseball. I’d rather have Moseley starting. No question. Burnett is garBAGE, to quote Marv Albert.

  41. BA October 18th, 2010 at 11:44 pm

I like the MLB network but am very disappointed they hired Peter Gammons. The guy is an absolute Yankee hater, leader of the anti Yankee fan club. His droopy old mug lights up talking about Yankee losses.

  42. stuart a October 18th, 2010 at 11:44 pm

yep having damon a year older and a 260 hitter with minimal power and ditto for matsui would have made all the difference in the world. they might have gotten 3 hits instead of 2…

jeter, arod, jorge, tex, etc.. need to hit. bottom line………

  43. Cashmoney October 18th, 2010 at 11:44 pm

An embarrassing performance by the Yankee hitters against Cliff lee tonight. So many poor approaches at the plate tonight. Tex looks lost with off speed stuff. Jeter swinging everything at his eye level. Thames swinging everything period. Just about every hitter were swinging for the fences and pulling lee’s pitch instead of going with it. They made a good pitcher looking like the reincarnation of Sandy Koufax.

And this leads to Burnett in GM 4! Later peeps, Tomorrow is another game.

  44. Pepitone October 18th, 2010 at 11:44 pm

    Repost:

I predicted the Yankees in 6 before this series started.

I am now not so sure they can do it. The offense is just terrible. They are nowhere near as good as last year, not even close. And the starting pitching (except for Pettitte) has been horrible. That was not the case last year.

However, sometimes, in sports, when a team totally embarrases the other team (see the 1960 WS for one example) the other team seems to find a way to come back and take the series. I never count the Yankees out until I see the look of defeat in their eyes. I haven’t seen it yet.

Burnett can be a hero tomorrow. Let’s see if he can prove all of us wrong about his abilities as a Major League pitcher.

If the Yanks don’t win tomorrow, then it will be the Rangers in 6.

  45. raymagnetic October 18th, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Tommy Hunter is giving up an 8 spot tomorrow people. Book it!

  46. umbrelladoc October 18th, 2010 at 11:45 pm

As optimistic as I am about this series, because I don’t think the Rangers are the better team, although anything can happen in a short series, I do think the Phillies are the team to beat.

  47. Trevor October 18th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Eighth inning in game 1 not withstanding, the long layoff appears to have hurt the offense. Even Granderson has cooled off.

Keep somebody on warmed up in the pen at all times and hope for the best. Girardi must have a quick hook. And the offense has to show some life. Season isn’t over quit yet. Although I know most of you would like it to be which is fine. But its not yet so I am going to hang in there just like I know the defending champs will

  50. TheStraw October 18th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

    Betsy-

But we are still only down 1 game with the next two at home and our Ace going in one of those games against notCliff Lee. No question they need to hit better. The momentum just feels worse.
I believe they hit Hunter hard tomorrow.

  51. West Coast Yankee Fan October 18th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

What do you expect to happen when your 2, 3 and 4 hitters are batting .091, .000 and .154 in the series?

  52. Pepitone October 18th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Teixeira better start earning his salary, or else he will be the biggest free agent bust since Jesse Barfield.

They also don’t care to think about the fact that the Yankees pitchers were all going on extra rest and the offense had several days without a game and were real sharp. The next few games will shut their mouths once again and guess what raymagnetic? They’ll turn into the Yankees BEST FANS EVER and they think no one will ever remember the hideous non-stop complaints…

    Almost.

yea, because thames did so well tonight…..

  56. raymagnetic October 18th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

    I totally agree Trisha.

And with that I bid everyone (well nearly everyone) a fond adieu.

Just remember what I’ve said. Tommy Hunter will be the nail for the Yankees hammer. CC will shut down the Rangers and Phil Hughes will embarrass them in game 6.

    Book it!!!!!

  57. tyanksfan36 October 18th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

Tommy Hunter is not as good as Lee or Wilson, if they don’t hit him then it won’t matter if AJ puts up the same line as Andy. They’ve got to start hitting and maybe a game against someone like Hunter will kick start them. I won’t give up on them until the final out of the ALCS.

  58. Yankee Trader October 18th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

I would hope that we can score more runs off Hunter than AJ gives up tomorrow.

As for Lee, two outfield flies, 13 strikeouts, against the Yankees- might be more dominating than Halladay’s no-hitter against the Reds. On a positive note-If you can’t beat him [Lee], Buy him! :)

  59. igotid88 October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

we can do this. i think we got em where we want em

  60. Tabbert October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

we suck…. we have led in only two innings of this entire series. good luck to the rangers. I will now be rooting for the pihllies to beat the living crap out of texas.

  61. Bronx Jeers October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

    SerfSurviving,

    Nice one.

So AJ, CC and Phil have to beat Hunter, Wilson and Lewis.

    It doesn’t sound impossible.

Of course somewhere in there they need to score a few runs.

  62. Betsy October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

Straw, I don’t have confidence in the offense OR the SP…………..beyond CC and Andy. Tommy Hunter may not be Cy Young, but this offense is pretty brutal now. If we tie it up tomorrow, we still have to face Wilson………… who’s a very good pitcher. I won’t even go into game 6.

  63. jacksquat October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

No point criticizing the hitting for this game. No one was hitting Lee tonight. He was masterful.

  64. Tyler October 18th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

Cashman made the right moves this offseason IMO. It’s easy to look back in hindsight but at the time I supported all of them. The Grandy trade looks alot better now and you always get the proven major leaguer in that type of deal. The Vazquez trade at the time gaves us what we thought was that legitimate 4th starter to push us into the postseason. The trade flopped but I don’t really blame Cash a ton for that. I for one really liked the NJ signing at the time. I thought he’d finally stay healthy just DH’ing and he fit into the lineup pretty well with his patient approach and I thought he could pop 25 or so out over that short porch in right. Obviously that didn’t work out lol.

Damon and Matsui wouldn’t be making a difference. Damon is a year older and Matsui had terrible knees. The guys who are here have to hit. End of story.

  65. UnKnown October 18th, 2010 at 11:51 pm

By the way the crowd sucked tonight. And don’t give me well its hard when you get blown out crap. It was a game the whole way till the 9th when people started to leave at 3 to 0. Might as well play on the road. Yankee Stadium has become a neutral site at best.

  71. Carlo October 18th, 2010 at 11:54 pm

Everyone needs to calm down. I am as emotional as it gets when it comes to this team and I left the stadium tonight feeling frustrated but with a sense of calm. Baseball is a crazy game and everyone writing off AJ tomorrow is naïve in my view. We win tomorrow and the series shifts back to our favor. Then sabathia on wednesday and we should all expect a big time bounceback performance that propels us to within a game of the world series with two chances to win it. If we won tonight, this series was over and we were moving on. Losing tonight to a great pitcher doesn’t crush us.

    Repost:

From the YES postgame: 1 for 21 with RISP. Kay stating that they’ve been outplayed in 26 out of 27 innings (the 8th in the first game). O’Neil saying they’re lucky to be down 2-1 and not 3-0. Kay saying the have to start hitting. Kay saying Tommy Hunter (tomorrow’s Texas starter) is not a shutdown sort of pitcher, but if they can’t hit Tommy Hunter, then you really have to wonder if they can hit. Kay also citing the missed opportunity with Gardner on third. O’Neil saying Texas is a hot team right now. (Chills since that what SJ44 alluded to more than once about what would determine which team went all the way.

Not from the YES postgame: right now they’re back to playing like they did in September. Hope that turns around before they find themselves watching the Rangers dancing on the field either here (yuck) or in Arlington (still yuck).

    ———————————-

Agree with Pepitone – they gotta get it going tomorrow or they’ll be skating uphill at best. Still not counting them out at all and still love them, but they’re going to have to play like the YANKEES and not like this. Also agree with Kay that if they can’t hit tomorrow’s non-Cliff Lee starter, there’s a real problem. GO YANKS . . .

  73. Betsy October 18th, 2010 at 11:54 pm

It’s not about this game, but about the series as a whole.

  74. Captain Clutch October 18th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Tex the robot has to start performing in the play offs. If he can’t go 1 day without facing pitching then make pitchers throw to him or something on the off days. But he absolutely can’t be an automatic out. It puts too much pressure on Arod and everyone else when Tex and Swish are 0-30 in these games. The Yanks are lucky that Arod carried them last post season because the rest of the lineup really comes up short every year in the play offs. If you take out Lee they aren’t even facing good pitching in this series and they still can’t hit.

  75. NDYankee October 18th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

GhettoBlaster, where the heck did I say the Yankees lost because they don’t have Damon and Matsui. I only said I missed them, and that I believe we were better with them, rather than without them.

  76. tyanksfan36 October 18th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

13 strikeouts isn’t that impressive, we’ve struck out more times than that in a few games this season…

Trying to find some positives about this game besides how good Andy was.

  77. lil m October 18th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Not afraid of Wilson if the Yankees starters give them a chance to win like Andy did tonight and the offense wakes the heck up.

One of the problems with building these new stadiums with the luxury seats, the luxury boxes, and the luxury meals, is you lose the real fans who simply cannot pay those prices.

I live out here in L.A., and the Lakers used to have great fans, now they start leaving after the third quarter, and during the game they sit on their hands talking on their blackberrys eating cavier.

You cannot buy a ticket under fifty bucks, and that’s in the nosebleed section!

These teams price most of the true fans right out of the park.

  80. Benny Blanco October 18th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

I still have faith that we can win the next two games at the stadium.

I dont believe that CC or phil will pitch poorly their next turn around.

  81. Tyler October 18th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

    Betsy-

I think AJ comes up big tomorrow. The main concern is I just don’t see the Yanks getting more than 3 runs off Hunter….. I don’t quite know what to think. They really should be down 3-0. They are getting manhandled in every aspect.

Unknown – I was at the game and u couldn’t be more wrong. For the crowd to get involved, decent things have to happen. Being 2 hit isn’t exactly getting the crowd involved. When swisher had a 10+ pitch at bat, the crowd got loud. When gardner led off with a single, the crowd was on its feet and loud. When he stole 2nd the place went nuts. Then jeter whiffs in a big spot, again, and we don’t score the run and the air is out of the balloon. The team didn’t give anyone reason to cheer. Andy got his support, the offense got what it deserved from the crowd, next to nothing.

Tyler, I don’t have faith in AJ, but even if he comes up big, I agree about the offense……..and we don’t have Alex to save us anymore.

I see Girardi speaking on TV so he’s in the interview room contrary to Suzyn’s report.

My only hope is that maybe Joe G is having a talk with his players and maybe some things are being aired in that clubhouse. Then maybe he will go to the interview room.

Now if he just doesn’t show up then that is a sign of panic IMO. And the Yanks are in trouble if that is the case.

Carlo – Fair points then. I guess I didn’t see a lot of people standing on say counts when the batter had 2 strikes on him. Otherwise it obviously is tough to tell by noise alone on TV

Yankees win tomorrow and this whole series turns on its head. Its the playoffs, SJ has said before and so true it is that the series looks only as positive and or negative based on the last game played.

One of the problems with AJ tomorrow is as soon as a guy gets on 1st they are going to run wild on him. As we know AJ gets rattled very quickly and I think he is going to get frustrated by them running like crazy and blow up. Obviously I hope he pitches a 8 inning shut out but I think to expect that is crazy.

I thought the crowd was really loud in the first couple innings. Even after Pettitte gave up the HR the fans were on their feet for the final out of that inning. It wasn’t until they realized Lee was on his game that they became kind of subdued.

Also, I have a feeling Burnett is going to have a good start tomorrow. For no other reason than he almost has zero expectations on him to pitch well. Like Kenny Rogers ’06.

Even if the Yankees lose tomorrow, this series is far from over.

Why do I say that? Because the big fella is going on Wednesday. He wins, then it’s 2-3, then Hughes goes and wins, then it’s 3-3, and with Pettite on the mound for game 7, I like our chances, even with Lee. If Lee can match his start tonight in game 7, then he is something special – Gibson, Koufax, Seaver, Carlton type special.

I saw Detroit fall behind 3-1 against the 1968 St. Louis Cardinals, the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, the Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Curt Flood, Mike Shannon, Orlando Cepeda St. Louis Cardinals, and they came back to win that series. The Cardinals won game 5 13-1!

I saw Pittsburg fall behind 3-1 to the powerhouse, World Champion 1971 Baltimore Orioles, and win the series. They did it again against the Orioles in 1979.

The key is how they play tomorrow. If they lose, but they start showing signs of life with the bats, and Burnett shows a mean streak, then I like our chances. But, if they show up and lay an egg like they have this entire series (except for that 8th inning in game one), then they are beat.

“then Hughes goes and wins, then it’s 3-3″

    I understand talking is easy.
