ALCS Game 5: Going to the bullpen
Apparently our server slowed down significantly last night, so let’s try a new post before the regular game post gets close to 1,000 comments.
This seems like a good time to make the call as the Yankees are turning the seventh inning over to the bullpen. Kerry Wood is replacing CC Sabathia with a 6-2 lead. Best-case scenario: Wood gets a few outs, Mariano Rivera wraps it up and the Yankees board a flight to Texas.
UPDATE, 7:05 p.m.: Like Sam just said, I’m not sure why anyone even takes a lead when Josh Hamilton is at the plate, but Wood caught Andrus off the bag at second then got Hamilton swinging. Huge addition to the bullpen, huge outs in this game and it’s 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
UPDATE, 7:35 p.m.: Curtis Granderson’s first home run of this postseason has pushed the Yankees lead to 7-2 in the eighth. Most of the crowd has stuck around for this one, and Mariano Rivera is — obviously — getting loose in the bullpen.

Come on, Kerry!
gotta use the glove
start warming rivera up now
You know that will equal a run…Get Robertson up….
The Rangers will blow it open here .
Andrus is being a little Chone (can we make that a pejorative term?)
posada forget the count?
Mo for 3?
Wood needs to pay more attention to the hitter. That run on 1st means little. Just concentrate with the meat of order up.
forget robertson, go to mo and worry about the 9th inning later.
That was AJ-esque.
Come on, let’s go! We need some outs here…
We should do something stupidly superstitious on this blog to get a rally going. LOL
Good job Wood…Concentrate on the batter at the plate.
hughes is also available for an inning tonight. maybe see him in the 8th?
This is getting ugly. CC could of done better than that. I don’t trust Wood. He’s been a bit wild and inconsistent.
a series rally, that is
“The Rangers will blow it open here .
Oh Ruby. It’s not going to happen.
Unbelievable.
Nothing is easy in this series.
don’t you love how Texas has no problem stealing bases down 4 but the Yankees won’t even attempt up 4. You have to take the aggressiveness away from them. Beat them at their own game like you did to Anaheim last year!
Where are the fastballs?
It will be fine. Yanks have a 4-run lead. We are not going to lose this game.
Cmon Wood, 3 outs than MO time
Wood has to calm down. It seems like his nerves are getting the best of him in the play offs.
we’ve got wood!! kerry wood that is.
that’s a big out.
Chad, it didn’t just slow, it disappeared for while.
OF COURSE THE SURVEY WAS STILL THERE!! NOT THAT I HAVEN’T ANSWERED IT 10,000x. What’s wrong with your Tech Department anyway?
“Where are the fastballs?”
Methinks you just saw one!
CC did his job.
If the bullpen can’t do theirs, they don’t deserve to win the game.
GET IT IN…the zone, I mean
there ya go…
Wood better stay on the outside corner here to Hamilton.
Yes, huge out there!
Big pickoff! Huge!
Boo-yah!
Superb!
Move over Andy Pettitte
Bottom line is we can’t leave a guy on 3rd with only one out. They were hitting with RISP in the first half of the game and apparently just forgot how to now. It always comes back to bite you, always.
Posada couldn’t throw out Molina right now
Huge pickoff.
Antler that
Like I said, chill and enjoy the game.
We have this one.
Now that’s Yankee baseball. Great play Wood!.. I’ll give him his props on that one. That is a huge play in this game.
STFD Andrus. go eat a bowl venison butt!
wood has been huge for this team.
Elvis has left the bag!!!
Nice….I love to see the overaggressive roadrunner gets burned by his play.
usa! usa! usa!
that’s two pickoffs by Wood in this series, Watch out Andy Pettitte!
Good ole fashioned deer hunting!
Wood has been great for the Yankees and you children are so afraid of your own shadow you want him out of the game because ‘I don’t trust him’. Go put a pacifier in your mouth, if you want the Yankees to come back in this series he has to be part of the comeback.
They didn’t steal that base. Wood thru a WP.
That aggressiveness just got him picked off.
You don’t steal bases down four runs in that situation with Josh Hamilton at bat.
Dumb baseball and he paid the price.
UnKnown October 20th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Antler that
~~~~~~~~
i find that how the homeplate ump asks for the check swing call is how it will be called. if they call right away, its a swing, if they half a$ s if, they call it a ball.
# LGY October 20th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Andrus is a reckless player.
He’s gotten picked off about 6 times this year.
Andrus reckless play will come back to hurt the Rangers at some point this series.
Antlers!
Andrus = Deer in Headlights.
ABC family is playing Goonies right now. Apparently to send some good luck to the Yankees. Never say die!
I have never seen so many calls right on the corner called balls.. This pitch trax is telling me something different than that ump.
Kerry!
i dont think they go to mo in the 8th up 4, unless whoever is pitching in the 8th struggles.
Come on Wood!!
Wood is good.
Andrus is a reckless player.
He’s gotten picked off about 6 times this year
——–
yeah but’s he’s probably won twice as many games with his aggressiveness alone. Wish Gardner would get picked off more
Ha ha, all ye of little faith!
=======
Pitch Trax isn’t perfect either.
I think Wood redeemed himself right there. He was like this during the regular season!
Soft WOOODed!
that was a great job by Wood, all they got was a scratch infield hit and some of you were ready to throw him off a bridge.
Speaking of God Bless America, Patrick Wilson, was awesome last night. Best singing in a long time.
I loved Arod’s smile after the roadrunner got picked off. They are obviously tired of that dude.
Wood did his job.
I start him for the 8th and go batter to batter.
Try to avoid using Mo for two innings with a four run lead if possible.
Okay I have a song that I wrote and posted earlier in the day – not the West Side story song. Do you want to see it now, or after the game? It really covers the situation well!
And I didn”t give you a choice of not seeing it at all! So don’t even try it!!!
I wrote it in honor of our troll Ruby Tuesday!
u-s-a! u-s-a! u-s-a!
that’s the kind of pitch you can throw when you are up 4 with no one one base.
Good job by Wood. 6 outs to go and Mariano is looming.
Weird vibrato, but nice.
“yeah but’s he’s probably won twice as many games with his aggressiveness alone. Wish Gardner would get picked off more”
————————-
Oh really?
Gardner stole 47 bases with at an 84% success rate.
Andrus stole 32 bases and got caught or picked off 15 times. 71% success rate.
I would lick the sweat between Sabathia’s toes for them to finish today off and the next game as well.
LGY,
You made a great call on that one!
I really believe that if the Yankees win this game, it’s going 7.
Weird listening to the game on such a delay. But I like to hear the call, even if it is Jon ‘drunky’ Miller.
I hope Mo remembers what it’s like to pitch. We haven’t seen him in ages…
We are in the playoffs, right?
They should play Adagio for Strings during the 7inn , much better than Kate Smith and companies.
I definitely wouldn’t bring in Mo to start the 8th inning. 6 outs is way too much to ask of him. Look what happened when Girardi asked him to pitch 2 innings in Texas. Either let Wood get another out or 2 or bring in Robertson. They still have a 4 run lead and Mo should be ok for 4 outs but nothing more…
Kind of a disgusting image but I fully support the sentiment.
Gardner stole 15 more bases than Andrus and got caught or picked off about half as much.
Pretty sure Gardner’s baserunning won more games than Andrus.
I’m with SJ, let Wood start the 8th
Yankee games are so long. Posada wears me out with all those trips to the mound and he always forgets the situation. Base runners, the amount of outs—–He has his senior moments. We need a new catcher going forward. Like I am telling you diehards something thats not obvious.
I’m with both Pat M and SJ, Wood is throwing the ball really well, no reason for Mo until the Rangers get at least one runner on.
Good call LGY….
Gardner should have had 80 sbs this year – easy. I’m confident in saying that Andrus made the difference in at least 12 wins for Texas this year due to his aggressiveness.
SJ,
People love players like Andrus who are too aggressive….until they do something so boneheaded like that.
The luck seems be turning a bit this game.
Robbie just missed that pitch.
Well MO has to pitch in this game at some point. Even if New York puts up 100 runs this inning. He needs some action.
Try to wait till the 9th
LGY, off the top of my head I can think of a half dozen games that the Yankees lost due to Gardner not stealing a base. That was my point.
This blog is a lot more pleasant with a four run lead.
Can’t stand that recording of Kate Smith — sorry. Kate Smith/Ethel Merman about the same to me. Just sounds like yelling to me on pitch.
Did Rivera go two full innings last year? I don’t remember.
Gardner should have had 80 sbs this year – easy. I’m confident in saying that Andrus made the difference in at least 12 wins for Texas this year due to his aggressiveness.
————————–
Care to share how you reached that conclusion?
If Gardner was only a 71% basestealer fans would constantly say how dumb he is on the basepaths.
“Cashmoney says:
Good choice, that song gets people pumped
Well, you would be wrong. Andris didn’t win 12 games with his aggressiveness this year.
Gardner should have had 80 SB’s this year?
Based on what, his video game rating?
Let Wood start the 8th and go batter to batter
BJK — well, none of us likes to see the team losing and we express it (in various forms).
Something makes me think I’ll post the song after the game, even though we all know we’re going to Texas! (Yanks are taking us in their suitcases).
I hope you’ll read it. I put a lot of effort into writing songs for the Yanks!
Let’s score another run or 2 so Mo isn’t needed at all in the 8th inning!!
So why is it exactly that Gardner doesn’t bunt like a fiend? Surely that would give him base after base with his kind of speed? That’s a giant mystery to me.
Tampayank, you need hear Tiesto or Corsten Ferry’s remix in trance. In a cavernous space like YS, it would be awesome!
When I hear Kate Smith I think of the crooning , no offense to God or America.
Great steal by A-rod!
“LGY, off the top of my head I can think of a half dozen games that the Yankees lost due to Gardner not stealing a base. That was my point.”
Your point is so far off. Give it up, Jim. Google Baseball and wikipedia and learn about the game before you post.
In no way does not stealing a base cost the Yankees a game.
I love Alex steals.
Always a big soot
Wow, that was anti-climatic.
Oh my
LGY, my opinion is that Gardner is NOT and aggressive baserunner and the fact is that it has cost the Yankees at least 6 games – and the AL East division. I – my opinion – would like to see a more aggressive Brett Gardner next year. I have never gotten upset at players being aggressive on the basepaths. I think it can only lead to good things, especially with a lineup like the Yankees.
Let’s go Thames bring him home!!!
STERLING!!!!! YOU’RE KILLING ME!
Some of those forms are more productive than others.
It’s not like anything fans say is going to impact the game, but I get your point.
If nothing else, his pitch count is skyrocketing…
LGY and the Other Phil – you guys always enjoy these games no matter what and never give up hope.
I like reading your posts.
Thanks.
Is that 3 pop outs today for Marcus?
Kearns the forgotten man.
Gardner didn’t cost them the division because of any percieved lack of aggressiveness.
Just because it doesnt fit what YOU want doesn’t make it bad baseball.
You have no facts because it’s a ridiculous analysis.
Come on Puma. Let’s see that hot smash PAST 3rd today!
I keep on hearing about Puma has no bat speed as RH , that simply isn’t true IMO. He just a poorer hitter from RH than LH.
That was Berkman’s last at-bat as a Yankee .
I am not sure to put a
or a
for that .
______________________________________________________________
He sees his game as working the count, taking a lot of pitches, fouling off pitches, getting walks. Can’t do that if you’re bunting first or second pitch.
He kept the walks up pretty well in the second half of the year, I give him that, but since the beginning of July he’s been a .230-ish BA/no power/few RBI guy.
Six more outs needed.
3 more outs until Mo
Gardner’s biggest problem is he can’t drive the ball or just hit period of late. His aggressiveness is the least of his problems. There is no leverage in whatever count Gardner is , he still can’t hit the ball with authority. It’s a tribute to him that he able to work so many walks.
Thanks trisha
This is playoff baseball. It doesn’t get better than this even in games they are down.
SJ44, one game cost the Yankees the division. Obviously you can blame every player on the roster. But the fact is that Gardner didn’t really lose any games for the Yankees this year with his aggressiveness and there is no other speedburner in the league that can make that claim. His basestealing percentage is too high – Ricky Henderson – the best of all time stole bases at an 82% clip. He can afford to be 10 points lower than the greatest and still be very productive.
OMG! Down 4 runs and he swings on the first pitch?! WTH?!!
Oh wait…
Tomorrow I have a full-day CLE (continuing legal education for anyone who didn’t know – something we’re required to do…) plus I also have to make a presentation. Seriously, having that kind of day after this Yankee win will be so much more productive than if they didn’t take this game! I would have hated to have to try to be “on” under adverse circumstances!
I’ll probably be giddy, knowing I am one of the very few people in that crowd who cheers for the Yankees. And yes I’m smug enough to try to find a way to mention it, ha ha. Though then they’ll gun for me. Not worth it.
Hughes is just chillin in the bully looking chill. I like it.
Great job by Kerry Wood. Getting Wood has to be one of Cashman’s best moves this season.
Kerry Wood, ladies and gentlemen.
Wood! A-Rod with the terrific defensive play to his left.
This is his first full year as a starter, he hit the wall a long time ago but has still given the Yankees some great ABs down the stretch. I’m excited to see what he can do with a full year under his belt. I hope the Yankees don’t sign Crawford.
So which is it, did he Gardner cost the Yankees the division or not? You are now arguing both positions.
I’ll make it easy for you….he didn’t.
Great job by Kerry Wood!
Three outs away from getting back into this series.
Wow, Kerry looked unhittable there – and nice play by Alex
Still wonder how the hand injury affected the second half of his season.
Would still like to see him work on his bunting in the off-season.
I also don’t want to sign Crawford for the contract that he will command.
Goodbye, Texas Rangers
Yanks turned it around on you
You thought you would drink on this day
Goodbye, Texas Rangers
Goodbye, Texas Rangers
You go home while Yanks keep going
We’re not going to miss you!
GO YOU TITANS A/K/A YANKEES!!! WE KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!
Let’s hope so Jim. I am not quite optimistic that Gardner will ever be able to hit the ball with authority consistently. I would take a Brett Butler offensive version of Garder. That would be great.
I’m done with you SJ44, you are just a combative bore.
I can’t believe we picked up Wood for nothing
Awww. Did you see the disappointed Ranger faces? They were so sure they were going to be celebrating on our field.
DON’T THINK SO!!!
Can’t wait for tonight’s postgame. Gonna be nice to see a happy one!
Jim,
If you just bring non-fact based complaints, nobody is going to throw you roses here.
SJ44 and Francessa share something in common. They are both always right
UGLY Eckersley. You want to see a sad face? Watch the TBS postgame. I never saw such happiness on his face as when the Yanks lost the second game in Texas. He looked like he was capable of walking on water.
Jackass homer.
Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the choice of “Live and Let Die” here
How does it feel Rangers?
Tack on runs! I love it.
Trisha, love your song writing.
Get on the Plane. Texas your going to have to work a little harder for it, sorry
That should be enough.
Nice..
Granderson has to be in the 2 hole for the rest of the series. Need to stack all the hot hitters together.
Grandy has been good in the playoffs!
if anyone has a reason for Kerry Wood not being in the game last night in the 6th inning with a 1 run lead and a runner on 2nd, please state it now. Just maybe if Girardi had his head out of his butt last night the Yankees would be looking at a 3-2 lead after tonight.
Start spreading the news
They’re leaving today
No more are they a part of it
Rangers, all talk!
Erica,
The best part of this is we get to play GTLU at least 1 more day
Nice to see the Yanks playing a Yankees type game. It should give them a good carryover to the next game in Texas.
why do I feel that Texas if going to relax knowing they have Lee in the back pocket for the 7th.
Be careful what you wish for…
I’m hoping Phil is lights out Friday…
Triple Short of a cycle shares something with many of the children here.
Have mommy make you some warm milk so you will be able to handle the fact the Yankees are back in this series.
The momentum has definitely switched to the Yankees.
Today is the blue print for Game 6, get the early lead and then hold them off with good pitching. I hope Phil gets off to as a good start or at least a better one then he did the last game.
Very nice ballgame played by the Yankees tonight. Workmanlike effort for Sabathia and Wood was great. Score a few runs, pitch well, and play defense and there can be two more outcomes like tonight.
great job by the Yankees tonight, let them win game 6 and then it’s a rematch of Andy-Lee, may the better team win.
How many times does Mo close it out with a popout in foul territory?
Nice to see the Yankee bats wake up and the pitching doing well. I’ve missed that for a while.
The TBS announcers are terrible. I can’t listen to their garbage for a whole game.
One game at a time! Dallas here we come! Look, If they leave everything on the field , win or loss. That’s all you can ask. Who knnow, Berkman might be more productive than Tex, it’s hard not to be.
Waikiki rough water swim lol
GET IT TO LEE!
GET IT TO LEE!
GET IT TO LEE!
Here’s what’s likely to happen on Friday: If the Yanks get to Colby Lewis (even a bit), Washington will be quick to go to Holland. The game may hinge on what the Yankees do against Holland. They haven’t solved him yet, but they will have to do so on Friday. Solve Holland, and a Game 7 is probable.
I would be quite happy to see this go to 7 games, obviously.
In some ways I wonder if that will help the Yankees some, if they win and move on. The layoff seemed to have gotten the pitching and hitting out of kilter a bit.
Order has been restored.
Great day for the Yankees, and their faithful fans, but, a poor day for all the trolls and naysayers.
Phil Hughes will pitch Friday, and will have Andy to complete our great come-back in game 7.
