ALCS Game 5: Going to the bullpen

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 20, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Apparently our server slowed down significantly last night, so let’s try a new post before the regular game post gets close to 1,000 comments.

This seems like a good time to make the call as the Yankees are turning the seventh inning over to the bullpen. Kerry Wood is replacing CC Sabathia with a 6-2 lead. Best-case scenario: Wood gets a few outs, Mariano Rivera wraps it up and the Yankees board a flight to Texas.

UPDATE, 7:05 p.m.: Like Sam just said, I’m not sure why anyone even takes a lead when Josh Hamilton is at the plate, but Wood caught Andrus off the bag at second then got Hamilton swinging. Huge addition to the bullpen, huge outs in this game and it’s 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

UPDATE, 7:35 p.m.: Curtis Granderson’s first home run of this postseason has pushed the Yankees lead to 7-2 in the eighth. Most of the crowd has stuck around for this one, and Mariano Rivera is — obviously — getting loose in the bullpen.

You know that will equal a run…Get Robertson up….

Andrus is being a little Chone (can we make that a pejorative term?)

  7. ac1 October 20th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

    posada forget the count?

  8. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

    Mo for 3?

  9. Cashmoney October 20th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Wood needs to pay more attention to the hitter. That run on 1st means little. Just concentrate with the meat of order up.

  10. ac1 October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

forget robertson, go to mo and worry about the 9th inning later.

  11. TheStraw October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

    That was AJ-esque.

  12. Dj October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Come on, let’s go! We need some outs here…

  13. icebird753 October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

We should do something stupidly superstitious on this blog to get a rally going. LOL

  14. Captain Clutch October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Good job Wood…Concentrate on the batter at the plate.

  15. ac1 October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

hughes is also available for an inning tonight. maybe see him in the 8th?

  16. NYY fan in NH October 20th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

This is getting ugly. CC could of done better than that. I don’t trust Wood. He’s been a bit wild and inconsistent.

    Unbelievable.

Nothing is easy in this series.

  20. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

don’t you love how Texas has no problem stealing bases down 4 but the Yankees won’t even attempt up 4. You have to take the aggressiveness away from them. Beat them at their own game like you did to Anaheim last year!

  21. TheStraw October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

    Where are the fastballs?

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

It will be fine. Yanks have a 4-run lead. We are not going to lose this game.

  23. tampayank October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Cmon Wood, 3 outs than MO time

  24. Captain Clutch October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Wood has to calm down. It seems like his nerves are getting the best of him in the play offs.

  25. ac1 October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

we’ve got wood!! kerry wood that is.

  26. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

  29. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

    CC did his job.

If the bullpen can’t do theirs, they don’t deserve to win the game.

  51. MG October 20th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Wood has been great for the Yankees and you children are so afraid of your own shadow you want him out of the game because ‘I don’t trust him’. Go put a pacifier in your mouth, if you want the Yankees to come back in this series he has to be part of the comeback.

  52. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

They didn’t steal that base. Wood thru a WP.

That aggressiveness just got him picked off.

You don’t steal bases down four runs in that situation with Josh Hamilton at bat.

Dumb baseball and he paid the price.

    Andrus is a reckless player.

He’s gotten picked off about 6 times this year.

Andrus reckless play will come back to hurt the Rangers at some point this series.

  71. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

    Wood did his job.

I start him for the 8th and go batter to batter.

Try to avoid using Mo for two innings with a four run lead if possible.

    Oh really?

Gardner stole 47 bases with at an 84% success rate.

Andrus stole 32 bases and got caught or picked off 15 times. 71% success rate.

  78. icebird753 October 20th, 2010 at 7:05 pm

I would lick the sweat between Sabathia’s toes for them to finish today off and the next game as well.

  79. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

    LGY,

You made a great call on that one!

I really believe that if the Yankees win this game, it’s going 7.

  80. The Other Phil October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Weird listening to the game on such a delay. But I like to hear the call, even if it is Jon ‘drunky’ Miller.

  81. Wang IS Taiwan October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I hope Mo remembers what it’s like to pitch. We haven’t seen him in ages…

We are in the playoffs, right?

  82. Cashmoney October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

They should play Adagio for Strings during the 7inn , much better than Kate Smith and companies.

  83. Captain Clutch October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I definitely wouldn’t bring in Mo to start the 8th inning. 6 outs is way too much to ask of him. Look what happened when Girardi asked him to pitch 2 innings in Texas. Either let Wood get another out or 2 or bring in Robertson. They still have a 4 run lead and Mo should be ok for 4 outs but nothing more…

Kind of a disgusting image but I fully support the sentiment.

  85. LGY October 20th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Gardner stole 15 more bases than Andrus and got caught or picked off about half as much.

Pretty sure Gardner’s baserunning won more games than Andrus.

  86. Pat M. October 20th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

I’m with SJ, let Wood start the 8th

  87. jackamir October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Yankee games are so long. Posada wears me out with all those trips to the mound and he always forgets the situation. Base runners, the amount of outs—–He has his senior moments. We need a new catcher going forward. Like I am telling you diehards something thats not obvious.

  88. MG October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

I’m with both Pat M and SJ, Wood is throwing the ball really well, no reason for Mo until the Rangers get at least one runner on.

  89. Pat M. October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    Good call LGY….

  90. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Gardner should have had 80 sbs this year – easy. I’m confident in saying that Andrus made the difference in at least 12 wins for Texas this year due to his aggressiveness.

  91. LGY October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    SJ,

People love players like Andrus who are too aggressive….until they do something so boneheaded like that.

The luck seems be turning a bit this game.

  92. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    Robbie just missed that pitch.

  93. UnKnown October 20th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Well MO has to pitch in this game at some point. Even if New York puts up 100 runs this inning. He needs some action.

Try to wait till the 9th

  94. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

LGY, off the top of my head I can think of a half dozen games that the Yankees lost due to Gardner not stealing a base. That was my point.

  95. BJK October 20th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

  98. LGY October 20th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Gardner should have had 80 sbs this year – easy. I’m confident in saying that Andrus made the difference in at least 12 wins for Texas this year due to his aggressiveness.

LGY, my opinion is that Gardner is NOT and aggressive baserunner and the fact is that it has cost the Yankees at least 6 games – and the AL East division. I – my opinion – would like to see a more aggressive Brett Gardner next year. I have never gotten upset at players being aggressive on the basepaths. I think it can only lead to good things, especially with a lineup like the Yankees.

    ______________________________________________________________

He sees his game as working the count, taking a lot of pitches, fouling off pitches, getting walks. Can’t do that if you’re bunting first or second pitch.

He kept the walks up pretty well in the second half of the year, I give him that, but since the beginning of July he’s been a .230-ish BA/no power/few RBI guy.

Gardner’s biggest problem is he can’t drive the ball or just hit period of late. His aggressiveness is the least of his problems. There is no leverage in whatever count Gardner is , he still can’t hit the ball with authority. It’s a tribute to him that he able to work so many walks.

  131. LGY October 20th, 2010 at 7:24 pm

    Thanks trisha :)

This is playoff baseball. It doesn’t get better than this even in games they are down.

  132. Jim October 20th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

SJ44, one game cost the Yankees the division. Obviously you can blame every player on the roster. But the fact is that Gardner didn’t really lose any games for the Yankees this year with his aggressiveness and there is no other speedburner in the league that can make that claim. His basestealing percentage is too high – Ricky Henderson – the best of all time stole bases at an 82% clip. He can afford to be 10 points lower than the greatest and still be very productive.

  133. The Other Phil October 20th, 2010 at 7:26 pm

OMG! Down 4 runs and he swings on the first pitch?! WTH?!!

    Oh wait…

  134. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 20th, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Tomorrow I have a full-day CLE (continuing legal education for anyone who didn’t know – something we’re required to do…) plus I also have to make a presentation. Seriously, having that kind of day after this Yankee win will be so much more productive than if they didn’t take this game! I would have hated to have to try to be “on” under adverse circumstances!

I’ll probably be giddy, knowing I am one of the very few people in that crowd who cheers for the Yankees. And yes I’m smug enough to try to find a way to mention it, ha ha. Though then they’ll gun for me. Not worth it.

    :)

This is his first full year as a starter, he hit the wall a long time ago but has still given the Yankees some great ABs down the stretch. I’m excited to see what he can do with a full year under his belt. I hope the Yankees don’t sign Crawford.

  140. SJ44 October 20th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

So which is it, did he Gardner cost the Yankees the division or not? You are now arguing both positions.

    I’ll make it easy for you….he didn’t.

    Great job by Kerry Wood!

Three outs away from getting back into this series.

Still wonder how the hand injury affected the second half of his season.

Would still like to see him work on his bunting in the off-season.

I also don’t want to sign Crawford for the contract that he will command.

Let’s hope so Jim. I am not quite optimistic that Gardner will ever be able to hit the ball with authority consistently. I would take a Brett Butler offensive version of Garder. That would be great.

Here’s what’s likely to happen on Friday: If the Yanks get to Colby Lewis (even a bit), Washington will be quick to go to Holland. The game may hinge on what the Yankees do against Holland. They haven’t solved him yet, but they will have to do so on Friday. Solve Holland, and a Game 7 is probable.

I would be quite happy to see this go to 7 games, obviously.

In some ways I wonder if that will help the Yankees some, if they win and move on. The layoff seemed to have gotten the pitching and hitting out of kilter a bit.

    Order has been restored.

Great day for the Yankees, and their faithful fans, but, a poor day for all the trolls and naysayers.

Phil Hughes will pitch Friday, and will have Andy to complete our great come-back in game 7.
