Rain possible tonight and tomorrow

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 22, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just got back from lunch, and there’s some very light rain falling off and on here in Texas. The forecast calls for a cloudy afternoon, with roughly a 40-percent chance of rain around game time.

It’s actually a little worse tomorrow, with a 60 percent chance of rain most of the day.

The Dallas Morning News noted that it’s been a very dry month around here, so maybe that’ll hold up and the games will go on as scheduled. Remember that in the postseason, games are not official after five innings. If a game gets delayed, it will not be canceled or cut short. It will be resumed at some point.

But Nick won’t the wind and rand then also knock down the long fly balls the Yankees hit?

    BX33,

Finally someone understands what I am trying to say.

We need two wins. Getting the first off of Lewis should be easier than getting it off of Lee. That’s my only point about the potential of rain messing with the current setup.

  5. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes October 22nd, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Now, on the other hand, if it doesn’t rain tonight, we win, and then it rains tomorrow, that is favorable to us in the sense that it at least gives the Yankees the ability to use CC in game 7 vs. Lee.

  6. LGY October 22nd, 2010 at 2:14 pm

If it rains tonight then I am really happy Hughes has a blazing fastball.

Raindrops in your eyes plus blazing fastballs in your grill equals another round of Philtober.

  7. Cashmoney October 22nd, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I think the potential C2 nimbostratus formation might also effect Hughes breathing tonight.
I wish he did not take such deep breath in between pitches. Also, he needs to cut hair to have less air resistance in generating torque.

  8. Nick in SF October 22nd, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I think you missed the point, Patrick.

The rain or lack of rain should help the Yankees, not the Rangers.

  9. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Game 1: Wednesday, October 6, 1982 at Busch Stadium (II) in St. Louis, Missouri

Game 1 was a wash—literally. The Braves led 1–0 behind Phil Niekro and were three outs from an official game when the umpire stopped it. When the rain did not subside, the game was canceled. Game 1 began from the start the following night in a match-up of the volatile Braves starter Pascual Pérez and longtime Cardinal starter Bob Forsch.

Niekro was lights out in this game. Cancelling this game essentially cost the Braves the 1st game win, eventually losing the series to the Cardinals.

  10. LGY October 22nd, 2010 at 2:17 pm

If it rains tonight then advantage Phil.

He is undefeated in postseason play when it rains

But if the Yankees are in the Series and this is still a problem, I will have to look into it.

  32. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2010 at 2:33 pm

    From USA Today-

“Nobody who’s been around is the least bit intimidated by any stadium,” says Yankees first baseman Lance Berkman. “For me, it’s almost easier to play on the road. I guess you don’t want to disappoint the fans at home.”

Six of the 11 teams that squandered 3-1 leads lost the last two games at home.

Take the point a step further to the weight of expectations.

“The more wins you can get, the more pressure you put on them,” Berkman says. “We win Game 6 and that puts a lot of pressure on them because you don’t want to be the team that frittered it away.”

    Good attitude! Go Yankees!!

Erica, no, what I mean is you can watch it online illegally. I’ve watched numerous games in this way, you just have to know where to go. I’m on the West Coast so these games often start before I leave work. I watched all of Game 5 at my desk :) Most often the feeds are pretty solid. Not great like HD on TV, but perfectly acceptable if you’re in a pinch.

  42. Patrick October 22nd, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I have Fios now. Unfortunately I’m moving to an apartment where Fios isn’t available yet :(

  43. Patrick October 22nd, 2010 at 2:41 pm

    Erica,

If you have the opportunity to get Fios I’d say you should get it, it’s really good. I’ve had zero interruptions in my service over the last year. Great TV picture, incredibly fast internet speeds.

The only bad thing I’ll say is that Verizon loves to use Motorola set-top boxes and DVR’s and they are really really REALLY crappy. If at all possible get a different brand of DVR.

  44. Erica in NY October 22nd, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Since light hearted banter is the mood today- I will tell you all the story of how I knew for a fact that the Yankees would win Game 5 at 3pm Wednesday

My evil boss called me into his office to go over a few things with me. Since I had been out of the office the first two days of the week, I asked how his important client meeting on Monday had gone.

He gave me a strange look and said, “No one told you??”. I said no and asked what happened….

So then he said he was at the meeting and there was an old man presenting. The old man was sitting in the chair next to him and when he was done, he left, and a new speaker came in. When the new person came in, they asked my boss to move down into the seat the old man had vacated.

When my boss sat down, he immediately discovered the seat was absolutely soaking wet. And he jumped up and screamed because he knew he probably sat in the old man’s pee.

So I knew right then and there that the Yankees were winning Wednesday night. Because nothing bad could ever happen on a day I heard such a great story.

  45. ConcernedCitizen October 22nd, 2010 at 2:44 pm

It’d have to be a hell of a storm for them to call the game. A delay is much more possible. And that could benefit us today and/or tomorrow. Of course, it’s a two way street.

  46. I Like Inge October 22nd, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Patrick is right. Fios is really good. My sister had it in the Manhattan and it was pretty smooth in terms of picture, user guide, on-demand options, and the internet connection was solid.

    Erica,

Fios will let you use your current phone number if you sign up with them. They call it “porting it over”. No matter what carrier your current number is with (even cablevision) you can get the number transferred to your Fios account

I know this because I recently ported an Optimum Voice number to Fios and there was zero problems.

The Fios service is leaps and bounds better than Cablevisions. You get a lot of free on demand shows that you can watch and their internet is faster than Optimum Online.

“In great attempts, it is glorious even to fail”

And that is the reason that I feel honored to be a fan of the New York Yankees every time they take the field. No matter the result. They play to win. When they fail to win I am equally proud to be their fan. Because it is the heart they carry onto the field that keeps me coming back.

And for those who can’t quite get to that point, consider yourself BLESSED to be rooting for a team that has been in the postseason 15 of the last 16 years. If you can find better, go do it!

I guarantee you there isn’t a single athlete who could come out of a room where Lombardi was speaking thinking they could fail.

They might fail but they would never believe it until the game was over.

  76. Joe from Long Island October 22nd, 2010 at 3:15 pm

G.Love – I bet they put Cruz in LF, and take their chances going for a knockout punch. But, I also bet that if a ball is hit to the gap, the corner, a bloop – that he doesn’t bust it going after it.

Erica- Cablevision is so hypocritical (I know, what a surprise). They fight tooth and nail against legislation governing cable companies and their billing rates, saying they’re fighting for free enterprise and against regulation. But, they have no hesitation to bring in the politicians calling for arbitration when it suits their purpose.

    This is great-

Ramiro Pena and Francisco Cervelli joined Cano in the drill, but they were the equivalent of two of Michael Jackson?s brothers showing up to practice a dance routine. Tito and Marlon could move their feet, but everyone would study Michael. Pena and Cervelli swung, but everyone studied Cano.

In my very first internship, I worked for a grizzled and no none sense native NYer in a rather large company. Carl really never said more than a few words and also had a slight scowl on his face. Frankly, I was very intimidated by him at first. Anywho, one day with a co-worker, the conversation got to who is the best SS ever, I blurted out Honus Wagner of the Pirates rather loud in my cubicle. A couple minutes later, Carl came over to me and ask me to go to his office for a min. So there I was, rather nervous and not knowing what I have done to warrant such a meeting. He said to me, ‘look kid, can you name all the players in that picture.’ It turned out he had a picture of 8 HOFers framed on his office wall. I was rather fortunate to name all of them, though I struggled with Joe Cronin a bit. Afterwards, he padded my shoulder and said ‘ kid, you okay.’ After that, Carl took me under his wings and we got along relatively swingingly.

That was my first baseball experience at work… sorry for the lengthy post… feel like sharing…

    ***************

    Very, very true

I also can’t imagine FOX wanting to lose the Cablevision Long Island viewership of a Yankee World Series. Thats most of their market lost

  86. rb from LI October 22nd, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Erica, I switched from Cablevision to FIOS last year and I love it. Unfortunately, I DID have to change my phone # (which I’d had for 10 years at that point), but it was worth it. Will Verizon end up in some disagreement with some network down the road? Probably. But I hate Cablevision and am extremely happy with the FIOS service.

The only downside that I know of is with Cablevision DVR boxes you can have an “extender” which provides something like 4x the recording capacity on the box. Not an option for me with my set top box – I have the Motorola box.

Oh, btw, every time I’ve had to speak with a rep they have been very pleasant and helpful.

A great Man. Vince Lombardi. I wish HE could talk to the Yankees before today’s game. He can’t but his words can.

“It is essential to understand that battles
are primarily won in the hearts of men.”

“We would accomplish many more things
if we did not think of them as impossible.”

“It’s easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline
when you’re a winner, when you’re number one.
What you’ve got to have is faith and discipline
when you’re not yet a winner.”

“In great attempts, it is glorious even to fail.”

MTU, thanks. I had a good cry when I read it because it did bring me back, and I really miss having him to go to. When I have to make any kind of important decisions, I find myself making them based on what I believe he would have felt was the best way to do it and the right way to go. I didn’t always do that when he was alive but there is not a question in my mind that he always had it right and when we didn’t agree, I was the one not thinking straight. He was an extremely practical man and consummately honest, honorable. I’m thankful that he was/is my dad.

just my humble opinion about FIOS-

Had Cablevision years ago and switched to Directv when the Dolans had a dispute with YES, did not have it for a year!

Switched to FIOS to save money, preferred Verizon phone service (which is direct fiber, Cablevision goes over the net.

PROS- Fios is 21st century, Cablevision is 20th century. With DVR, you can switch back and forth between two channels and rewind or pause both! (A must for sports fans!)
DVR holds 20 hours HD, channel lineup is logical, grouped by category, HD is always channel number plus 500. WIdgetas for sports enables you to get all the socres and stats on demand, no extra charge, along with weather, etc.
Great customer service people. No problems with Motorola equipment.
Can bundle with Verizon wireless to save even more money.

CONS- No local programming, and billing problems are common.
Lots of phone company style surcharges.

Cablevision is always (it seems) in dispute with someone over programming, no instances of FIOS yet.

I highly recommend it. With the absence of contracts now, if you want to try it, cablevision wiring is compatible, though Cablevision typically does not update your wiring unless you leave. If you don’t like it, Cablevision will be back offering you great deals to come back.

    Let’s go Yankees!
